and then we see her be fragile and vulnerable in her last dying moments, and that makes you think that she's what, a pushover?

i'm getting towards the end of the skypeia arc, & i'd like to say just how much i adore the way the female strawhats have been treated.

just... every aspect of how the way their characters have been previously contextualized influences the story-line is treated with a masterful amount of consideration. we're given so many layers to both of them that enrich not only their characters specifically, but the arc, and the one piece world as a whole. without nami & robin having their specific skills, and their specific values, without those being built upon, the story would have come to a halt.

you could not have skypeia without nami & robin being who they are as individuals. not just because they never would've gotten there without nami, but also because the way these women think is itself foundational to the machinations of the arc as a whole.

to be totally upfront, if you think any other strawhats were more central to the skypeia arc than nami & robin were you are full-on fucking lying to yourself.

#obligatory disclaimer that i’m aware luffy is the protagonist & a lot of interesting stuff is explored w him. this isn’t abt him though. #part of me wonders if this is an aspect of why people will write off this arc sometimes tbh... like that & the political themes. #but yeah anyway i get why people say that for all there are 100% misogynistic tendencies in oda's writing & character design #it is very very hard to say that he as an individual is an ideological misogynist. like the level of care he puts into his female cast mem #-ers generally speaking & how he approaches what existing as a multi-dimensional individual would look like in their specific contexts is #like... in a lot of ways still something that is unprecedented across all forms of media. #but also not the point but anyone who says nami in particular doesnt get real fights/is unskilled um... no you're wrong read her fight in #alabasta & then all of skypeia. #like in alabasta she takes on arguably a stronger opponent than sanji when considering the structuring of BW. not only that but she does s #with a weapon she has never used before while actively reading the instruction manual. and she WINS. she wins based on sheer intellect & #the ability to utilize skills the audience already knows she has. the pre-existing basic fighting skills she's introduced with are elabora #-ed upon by incorporating her skill w navigation. same with the way her cunning is used in skypeia to cover her lack of sheer brute. & #the best part about it is she's fucking tough in a way that makes sense! she isn't strong/weak just for the sake of positioning her as such #it is thoughtful & it strengthens her as a character rather than just like giving the power-scaler types smth to mindlessly chew on. #like do i wish nami got to fight more & take a more active role in that regard even if i don't think she needs to be a fighter in the same #sense as the monster trio? yes absolutely. i'm guessing this is going to be smth that bothers me potentially even more with robin. #but that does not mean her fights are not masterfully written when she gets them or that she isn't tough as a bag of nails. #respect my darling woman or die. #skypeia #nico robin #nami #grey's one piece tag

okay this is so small but makes me really happy. taketora just got done talking about how much he admires tanaka and how cool and "manly" he is, which like makes sense right, both tanaka and taketora are always being shown as these like loud "boy's boys" archetypes who do everything with power, talk about girls, and emphasize "guts" and "manliness," so obviously taketora would respect tanaka

but then he immediately turns to also think about how much he admires fukunaga in the same way—fukunaga who doesn't display any of those same qualities that taketora was just admiring about tanaka. fukunaga is quiet, fairly low-key and doesn't flaunt anything ever. dude just goes around making weird puns that 1 people often barely even hear and 2 apparently seem to baffle everyone. but taketora sees all of that and sees how fukunaga still shows up and gets the job done more than successfully—he's one of the top point getters on the team—and taketora respects him for all of that, still calls him a "man's man" and tbh more than respects him, he admires him and sees him as a rival

and idk that just makes me happy, like 1 it's a nice small way of furudate saying that yeah "manly" is a thing that's important to taketora but it doesn't just mean one stereotypical thing—like it's showing that taketora isn't as one dimensional as we would have thought and that he sees things from multiple perspectives (we also saw this from him back during the whole "guts" thing with kenma and how he respects him too)—and it's also an example of seeing fukunaga from another perspective too. it's because he's so low-key that even we as readers have probably barely noticed how much of a rock he is for the team, but if you got back through their matches you can see how often he does score—he's quiet but he's always there. and i just like that furudate takes a moment to not only acknowledge fukunaga but to do it from taketora's pov in order to really hit it home to us how true it must be

One thing I want to shove down people's throats is the idea of Scar doing nice/decent things and showing glimpses of Tacari.

At the end of the day, everything could have been avoided if Scar simply let everything go and moved on. Him spiralling down into this selfish, bitter, corrupted lion is literally his own doing. If at ANY point he stopped and had a moment of realisation, he could have found some sort of middle ground.

Tacari becoming Scar isn't akin to some drastic change in state of mind, or some brainwashing. That change is him hitting a dark point in his life, and ultimately choosing to stay there instead of reaching out and talking to others, or asking for help, or even finding some new purpose in his life beyond Pride Rock.

Somewhere in the infinite universes, there's a prince who is second in line. He was bitter at first, but he ultimately shrugged it off. He would be the sassy uncle who would encourage his nephew to cause trouble solely to annoy his brother, and share nuggets of wisdom based on his own experiences. He'd still be a grumpy lion.

I think the most annoying thing about the fake girl power princess character is that Fiona from Shrek already did that 100x better. Most of Fiona’s femininity and helpless act were a performance, which is what made her the perfect parody/breakdown of the cliche damsel in distress. Gender is after all largely performance. She could fight, but not because she had brothers. She just had a lot of free time and a need to defend herself. All the skills she had, had a context, they weren’t just boxes to check to make her seem cool. At the end of the movie she choses to be “ugly” because that version of her is just as much who she really is, if not more. The new “different kind of princess” still gets to be conventionally attractive and the only reason she’s fighting against the fantasy patriarchy is because we’re still writing fantasy stories were there is still a patriarchy. There’s no real examination of anything beyond the shallow surface level stuff.

#like yes she does fall into *some* misogynistic tropes especially insofar as character design. as much as i wholeheartedly adore arlong #park you could argue that on a doylist level that- when contextualized with a lack of women on the main crew who are actively fighters in #the way male characters get to be- that the fact of(though YES IT IS WELL-WRITTEN ITSELF) the authorial choice to have her empowerment be #gained through asking for help plays into misogynistic tropes regardless of it's technical quality. these criticism are worthwhile. #that said- she is such an interesting & consideratley written character when oda does not fall into those more flawed mindests. #she is amongst very few characters who i have seen genuinely approach wealth as a means of security & stability learned through the absence #of such explored compassionatley & with understanding. she gets to be flawed she gets to be morally gray. she gets to be mean & negativel #-y informed by her trauma & inconsiderate & selfish & at times unkind while also being depicted as human & sympathetic & multi-dimensional #just exist as a fucked up human being doing her best within the context of her universe in a way we rarely get to see with female character #especially in male dominated & male targetted fields like shounen & western comic books. like she is such a salient individual & humana ch #-racter with a holistic & reasoned examination of class-politics & the emotional dependency that can result from the trauma that can #manifest as a result of surviving poverty without condoning it's attitudes OR blaming the victim on a narrative-level is very masterfully #& like something in particular that i enjoy about nami is that she isn't necessarily a good person. she admits as much. but she is living #for herself & what she cares about & that goes DIRECTLY back to a major informing event for her character (bellemere's death & last words) #how she contextualizes her ultimate right to life & consumption. like she is approached as a fully dimensional human beings who- irregardl #-ss of the morality of her conclusions- has context informing her worldview to the extent she is UNDERSTANDABLE without condoning any misgu #-ded views OR (& this is where many writers fuck up) taking them to a severe enough extent that sympathetic framing feels like the impositi #-n of forgivability. & like- the way that itself is done on a techincal level is something i would like to commend oda for in particular. #grey's one piece tag #nami

I'm just not...particularly interested in that house's history. (Which is. To use a term from allllll the way back in my raised-in-the-Catholic-Church days, a Mortal Sin™ in this fandom, I know.)
