I always imagined the kids in the Because of Mr. Terupt books looking like the kids from the magic school bus.

The lowest-placing entrant in each Round 0 poll will be eliminated, as will the second-lowest-placing entrant with the overall lowest percentage.
Reasons each character is the best are under the cut!
Kanan Jarrus: "Jedi Knight, survived order 66, finds and trains Ezra Bridger, resident dad of the Ghost crew, kind, brave, goes blind to save Ezra, dies to save Hera and the others"
Marcia Overstrand: "Saves the protagonist’s life and sees potential in him and offers him an apprenticeship and a home when he’s just Some Random Kid. Her found family mentor/apprentice relationship with protagonist is one of the most important relationships of the series. Prickly but Cares A Lot underneath. Insists on wearing ridiculous shoes all the time. I love her."
Maxwell: "i just think he's neat. he cares about his students so much and is so willing to drop everything and throw hands with the magical government over them at all times. he's very gentle but a bit mischievous too"
Milligan: "Consider: flung himself off not one but TWO very high places (cliff and building) in service of the kids he protects. Also a great dad and a clever and funky man overall."
Minerva Mcgonagall: "Harry Potter"Only competent teacher there, girlboss, actually helps Harry, stands up to Umbridge, girlboss, turns into a cat"
Mr. McFeely:He delivers mail speedily but is also always willing to stop and talk about things that are important and/or interesting"
Mr. Terupt: "Best teacher, 10/10, Would recommend"
Niyx Raedon: He was a secret mentor figure to the main character who he was soul-bound to and protected through space and time. He died taking a fatal wound instead of the protagonist. The banter and interactions between him and the main character were the best."

everybody is always talking about gateway drugs, but what about gateway books. gateway movies. gateway tv shows. the media you were so obsessed with in middle school you decided to google, and suddenly you were on fanfiction.net and now you’re chronically on ao3. what about those, huh?

i think that the mom IMMEDIATELY asking dw why she wants to freeze a snowball is the funniest shit like. she knew better than to just say yes to her daughter who loves tormenting her older brother wanting to freeze something that can later be thrown at him

the THIRD chapter is out!
fic title: about the horrors
chapter title: saving mr. terupt
warning(s): none
chapter(s): 3/6
chapter summary:
Martyn keeps it real.
(In which a great deal of things happened between Last Life and Double Life, and nobody knows quite how to deal with them.)
fic summary:
As it turns out, teenage bloodsport for the sake of divine entertainment is not sustainable.
(alternatively: Jimmy shrugs off the role of comic relief, Pearl compartmentalizes, Martyn fends off the worst gods this side of the universe, BigB makes a good attempt at operating independently, and Grian handles the aftermath of a death game as well as he possibly can--badly.)

Hi Jenn. Can you have an MG or YA novel with an adult protagonist? Kind of like the film NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, where the main character is an adult and most of the characters are adults too, though it’s still child-like as a story, plus the main character does have a son who’s a child. If that was a novel would the kid of the main character have to be the main POV or could the adult he like in the movie?
The short answer is, No.
BUT! There's nuance here, so... kinda?
There are certainly examples of children's books with adult NARRATORS. (Series of Unfortunate Events. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.) -- but the stories are not ABOUT the narrator, they are about the kids.
There are certainly examples of children's books with adult protagonists, especially in classic books, but the adults are weird/child-like. (Mr. Popper's Penguins. Amelia Bedelia.) In those, while the adults are the main characters, they are acting like kids, and/or the kid reader will see why they are funny / wrong / whatever and will either relate to the character or feel "more grown up" than the character.
There could be a MULTI-POV book in which one or a few of the many POV characters are adults. (My client James Klise wrote THE ART OF SECRETS, which is a YA art hoax novel in which there are 12 POV characters, a couple of whom are adults, but the adults are hardly the stars of the show.)
Or a there could be a book with an adult character who is quite important, but it's not from their POV. (BECAUSE OF MR TERUPT has a lot to do with the teacher, the titular Mr Terupt -- but it's from the POV of multiple kids in the class.)
Or a there could be a book with a main character who isn't technically an "adult" because they are not technically a normal human. The BARTIMAEUS series by Jonathan Stroud comes to mind -- it's alternating POV between a kid and a genie. The genie is like, a million years old, and knows everything, so I guess is An Adult... but IS HE, really? SKULLDUGGERY PLEASANT is about a 12-year-old girl who is the apprentice of a skeleton sorcerer, and he's a main character, obvs -- like it's named after him! But can a "skeleton sorcerer" be said to be a Normal Adult? Lots of superheroes are adults, technically, but if there are kids books about them, they are usually kid/teen versions of themselves, OR, if it is a straight-ahead book about their "grownup" version, they aren't REALLY regular human adults, are they?
But regular human normal-ass adults? No. They have their own dang books!

So I saw you mentioned on that hyperspecific poll that you love middle school novels. First of all, SAME. Second of all, have you ever read anything by Gary D. Schmidt? Third of all, do you have any middle school novels you would recommend? I'm looking to spend more time reading and less time on my phone!
YES!!! SOMEONE WHO SHARES MY LOVE FOR MIDDLE GRADE NOVELS YES!!!
He sounds very familiar, but I don’t think so! Are there any books of his that you recommend?
Ohhhhh yes >:)
Waggit’s Tale by Peter Howe
These books made up so much of my childhood 😭
I haven’t actually reread them in years, but I remember them being so darn good… and also filled with Many Emotions.
Out Of My Mind by Sharon Draper
So darn good like oh my gosh-
It just feels so real and personal and it was also very insightful!
Because of Mr Terupt by Rob Buyea
Aaaaaaaaah yes <3 The multiple POVs work really well here!! Very good series!
Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelli
Super fun, really unique, very immersive. One of the few stories that I’ve ever reread!
Survivors by Erin Hunter
I could never really get myself into Warriors, but I absolutely love Survivors! I think it’s a really cool series—I just love the characters, and the story gets especially good in the second series!
Revenge of The Flower Girls by Jennifer Ziegler
I really need to reread this again 😭
This. Hekkin. Series. The title makes it sound cheesy but I promise you it’s not. In fact, it’s one of my favorite books/series!
Starfire by Jennifer Alvarez
THE GUARDIAN HERD MY BELOVED
These books shaped me when I was 11-12, I think. Amazing series. So darn good.
They’re also pretty much the only audiobooks I’ve ever voluntarily listened to! The narrator is freaking awesome!!
How To Speak Dolphin by Ginny Rorby
YES <3
I haven’t read this one in years, so it might not be as good as I remember… but I remember it being very good XD

The city of ember & series by Jeanne DuPrau, somewhere between youth a ya dystopian novel another personal fav of mine
The seven husbands of Evelyn hugo by taylor Jenkins reid, romance-ish one or two kinda spicy scenes, but not enought that I wouldn't recomend it to like my grandma
One of us is lying/next by Karen McManus, ya mystery series, some queer rep, side dish of romance, and a twist ending of both of the book
Shattering glass by Gail giles, ya mystery, dude this book fucked me up, the suspence keeps building and the end is holy shit, DO NOT read unless you have something really feel good to read after, but it is incredibly well written

wait holy shit i’ve never met anyone who knows what i’m talking about when i talk about bc of mr terupt 😭 i had to get a permission slip signed to read the sequel bc it had periods in it
yeah it was super popular in my area bc it was written by a local author 😭 lookin back at it those books were WILD. like there was like a kid who was born for the purpose of being an organ donor to his dying sibling? he like adopted a baby off the side of the road in either the second or the third book? and like. the kid was like 13 but it was HIS adopted baby his parents didnt want it.. There was like an overdose in a drug house at one point? it was like glee levels of ‘this is what the kids are doing these days!’ but a book about sixth graders.. i remember it fondly tho

the most comphet thing i’ve ever done is in 6th grade, we would read the book because of mr terupt ouut loud, but each class different people got assigned to read as the different characters, and i one time i was reading a girl character who had a crush on one of the guys and suddenly i decided that whoever was playing that guy character at that moment would be my next crush so i could tell all my friends at sleepovers. dont even remember who it was but i was very glad i now had a prepared answer for “who do u like”
