My Issues with Butch Hartman
Tumblr media
Call this the sequel to my post on Mr. Enter. But honestly compared to Enter, Butch Hartman has made himself look far worse in so little time. Not only with how he uses his influence, but he basically showed his true colors not long after he left Nickelodeon. With Enter, the worst you can say about him is his opinions on media and his politics. With Hartman, there is a surprisingly lot more under his belt that made the hate towards him .
To preface this, while I’m gonna shit on this dude, I’m not shaming anyone who still likes his past content. With that said, bibbity Boppity boopity. Let’s look at the fucking scoopity.
The Telltale Oaxis
This really takes the cake as the scummiest thing Butch has done. Words and opinions can be one thing, but using your platform to basically trick some people out of their money for a project you abandoned for the most part grinds me gears a lot more. As bad as his marketing strategy was, at least Enter provided effort in his indiegogo project beforehand for god’s sake. Oaxis is one of the most pitiable crowdfunded projects I’ve seen.
It’s nearly two years since Butch got Oaxis funded and what have gotten beyond pure dead silence. Nearly two years and little to no significant updates for Oaxis’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, his Youtube, or the site’s official account. No wait, that last part’s kind of a lie. They had monthly updates on the official site up until September 2019. Could’ve posted this on their social medias but you take what you can get.
The major takeaway from the updates, in all fairness, was that the kickstarter wasn’t enough and they still need to raise more funds for the service. The “capital-building” stage he calls it where he’s looking for more investors in addition to getting actual programs onto the service. That and Oaxis is a big vision for Butch and his wife in spite of not only giving up the monthly updates and basically secluding any mention of Oaxis from any place else. That’s basically it and I legit feel sorry for everyone that couldn’t get their refund back.
This isn’t HBO Max or Disney+ where you just expect them to have something together after their initial announcement because they’re already media conglomerates, this is an independent project. One that people, your fans included Butch, put over 200K thinking you would at least give people something. But beyond a “sizzle reel” that said nothing aside from Oaxis going to be a thing, you have presented jack after two years. I don’t expect the ins and outs of every business meeting with executives, but staying silent about everything except for monthly newsletters that offer very little encouraging progress and hasn’t updated since September of last year is not a good sign. And I’m especially hard on this topic, Butch, because this is the biggest point where it is seriously hard to trust you. It’s not criticizing your ego when after having too many cracks in your story, you really haven’t put your money where your mouth is.
I don’t wanna presume the guy’s given up on it, hoping everybody would forget it after a while, but he’s really put the effort in to make Oaxis feel like a afterthought. I’m not an expert in business, but even I can believe that after his non-apology for not being upfront with his initial intentions, that he’d try to provide updates on the project to not come off as the scam artist people have accused him as. Even with his Youtube channel that I’ll get to later, I don’t think it’s hard consistently posting about your so called vision if you have that much faith in its success. You’ve already gotten thousands of bucks initially with the crowdfund, people deserve more than your pitiful wishful platitudes and I unfortunately can’t believe you’ll have anything after a few years. It’s not that everyone forgot about it, but you mostly took the money and ran. If Butch pops up with something if he sees this somehow, I’ll eat that crow, but I sincerely doubt it after this long. Like at least post something on the Twitter, I get depressed just looking at it; that account is the textbook definition of famine.
The Childhood Reposter
I’ve brought up Butch’s youtube channel a couple times, and it’s when every time I look at it, it’s a little sad. When it comes to major creators, I typically think that after finishing their projects they’d move to newer things. People like Lauren Faust, Mike Judge, CH Greenblatt are all continuing to make new works under differing studios while new creators are getting the spotlight. Butch though? I mean, he has a new cartoon that I swear you’ve never heard about but other than that, the dude looks like he has little to say for himself nowadays beyond the 2 shows he’s famous for, Fairly Odd Parents and Danny Phantom. I would’ve added TUFF Puppy and Bunsen is a Beast but I can see that those two aren’t his major players seeing as how they’re rarely ever mentioned on the channel.
If it’s not some watchmojo level meme video, almost every other video is about either two of those shows in some varied fashion. I get that he “created your childhood” and made credulous bank from Nickelodeon, but it’s like Danny Phantom is all that stands between him and having an audience. That and drawing anime characters in his style which is... y’know, I’ll leave that to you. It’s like he retired and yet goes on about the good old days like a fluctuating ego. He’s still making a cartoon but to him that’s hardly a factor compared to his known successes.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to just be known as the guy who made two of your countless beloved cartoons. Not that that’s all he talks about, but it’s the insistence of his legacy that unfortunately gives me Bojack Horseman vibes. He no doubt has a good thing going but I believe that this isn’t gonna last. Just saying, dude has 850K subscribers and unless it’s a real hook like with the recent Danny Phantom/Jake Long death battle, he’s hardly getting a good fraction of views anymore. There’s only so many times you can milk Danny Phantom as your masterpiece before everyone moves on.
The Holy Boast
I wanna make this short because I’m not a huge talker of religion, but I stand to say that you should NOT, under any circumstance, believe BPD, PTSD, autism, fucking heart & kidney failure can be “cured” or “healed” through sermons of prayer. This here? This is genuinely something else.
https://www.healingjourneys.today/
Tumblr media
For clarity, this was a gospel conference hosted by Butch and his wife and yes, they openly proclaim that BPD, austism, and heart disease can be cured through prayer of holy worship.
Now, I’m gonna give a full disclosure right here because this most certainly biases my point here, like I’m gonna own this. But my grandpa was a religious man that suffer from health problems. He notably prayed to carry on, yes, but at the same time he sought medical help. Even he told me that prayers wasn’t gonna keep the pacemaker going, he went to the doctors and actually did more than read the bible to improve himself. He unfortunately passed, but he was in his 70s and I honestly couldn’t believe, as hard as I try, that he was gonna live forever. My grandpa would’ve no doubt died far earlier if he followed this conference’s logic.
My point is that this is personally unsettling. I seriously cannot believe this is how autism and religion works and it blows my mind that him and his wife thought this conference was a suitable idea. I’m not bashing them as christians, but thinking mental disorders and bodily diseases can be done away with motivational seminars because that’s basically what they are is a legit slap to the face. And the seedling idea that they’ve done this before blows my mind.
The Financial Flaker
This is very recent and everything is generally explained in the 12 minute video but long story short: Butch hired an artist and never paid them for their work. The artist in question, Kuro, describes what happened between him and Butch in this video and provides receipts. Can’t really add anything to this myself beyond this just builds to the idea that Butch cannot be trusted as a professional business maker. I believe he still has people working for him but from this video, it tells me that Hartman will gladly use those lower than him in favorable pursuits and will gladly throw ignorance when he wants to because his cartoon veteran status presents that shield from thinking he can do no wrong, which can mean throttling his hires.  Let’s end this.
youtube
The Conclusion
When I get down to it, Butch is almost a Machiavellian character in a way. It’s amazing how much the trust people have had with Hartman have evaporated in less than a couple years. It’s amazing how much his ego has truly shown after he stopped being a namestay in Nickelodeon. Haven’t even mentioned the times he arrogantly deflected criticism because he was a namestay at Nick and how a couple who’ve worked with are well aware of his ego. I can’t help but believe that even after everything, he claims ignorance to his fall from grace and keeps going. Even when more and more are knowing his true self, he’s mostly just doing what he’s been doing for the past few years.
It’s respectable in a way, but shows that the world will move on without him. Again, if you like Danny Phantom and Fairly OddParents, I won’t judge you for it nor say you should be ashamed. This isn’t about cancelling Butch, or get him to stop spreading whatever wacky things he believes in. It’s my personal take of how this man whom I once respected because of what he made before has lost every bit of that from me. It really feels like he grew up with that “I Created Your Childhood” mentality being a 4 time showrunner for almost a couple decades. And when he finally left Nickelodeon, I guess the chance to be that stand out self-made success got to his head and he finally showed his true colors. I now find it hard to believe Butch cares about the little guy that were his fans as much as he rides off his success and others who tolerate him. As such, like JK Rowling, more are seeing this side of him and leaving him behind. Meanwhile Butch is gonna chug on until he just loses steam. It’s kinda like Icarus where the guy will make every effort to fly to the sun. But sooner or later, he’s gonna fall, and in the end I doubt anyone’s gonna care to see it. I know he won’t.

Just like you, the whole scenario that had played out with your diary was plaguing Richard. For three days he stared at the book and his phone, praying for some kind of communication from you. But you remained silent. Heartbreakingly silent. Every time he looked at his phone, he desperately wanted to see your name on the screen. Nothing.
On the third night, he stood in his living room, splintering pain raging in his temples and behind his eyes. Each night had been torture; he tossed and turned, constantly checking his phone for any sign of you. You had not been active on Twitter or Instagram. He even checked his follower list to make sure you hadn’t unfollowed or blocked him. You were still there.
Your last conversation was what hurt the most. It was as if your friendship had been nothing, but your journal? All those entries. Surely this was your insecurity. It couldn’t be anything else.
I have to tell her. But she’ll know I read her damn diary! Maybe I could send her a gift. But if it all falls through then I just make myself look like an idiot, and the last thing I want to appear to her is clingy and desperate.
But Richard was desperate. Desperate for you.
You cried into your pillow every night, sat away from people at work and fell into a pit of despair and isolation. If the friendship had of meant anything at all to Richard then surely he would have fought for you.
By the sixth day you had been home, you lay in bed watching Beauty and the Beast, one of your favourite Disney films. Your eyes wandered across to your bedside table where you looked at a china figurine of Dumbo which Richard had brought for you on your last birthday. He knew how much you adored Disney.
Belle and the beast waltzed around the grand ballroom as Mrs Potts sang, and instantly you felt your home made apple pie begin to stick in your throat and the part you had already eat come back up, bringing sour bile with it. With your hand over your mouth, you raced to your bathroom and vomited into the toilet.
You cried again as your cheek rested against the cold enamel the toilet. The sobs echoed in the pan and you curled up, sliding down onto the floor.
At work, your friend, Jen, began questioning you. Both of you were on your break from the office you worked in. Your manager was bugging the team again about targets not being met, verbally whipping you and threatening disciplinary action if your performance didn’t improve.
“Chris is an absolute arsehole,” Jen scoffed, tipping her coffee.
“Yeah, he is,” you replied simply, staring at the pale green carpet beneath your feet.
“What’s up? You haven’t been right since you got back off annual leave,” Jen enquired. “I know you’re pretty quiet anyway, but something is definitely wrong.”
You gave out a loud sigh. There was no way you could hide your feelings anymore, however, you knew that you couldn’t admit the complete truth. It was too stupid and laughable to admit to.
“Me and Rich haven’t spoken much and it’s playing on my mind a lot,” you said softly, shifting in your seat with unease.
Jen furrowed her eyebrows and moved in across the table, keeping her arms folded. You looked up in her trustful brown eyes which were behind black-framed glasses. “What? Has he cut you off?”
“Ummm....”
Jen immediately sensed what was behind your inability to talk. “Don’t tell me you have! Oh, for fuck’s sake! Why?”
Other workers from the office turned and looked at you and Jen in distain, tutting amongst themselves.
“Jen, stop it,” you growled in irritation. “You wouldn’t understand.”
You shoved your seat back, grabbed your coffee and walked back to your desk. Once there, you placed the half empty mug down and headed to the toilet. You stepped inside one of the cubicles, took your phone from your trouser pocket and began to sob as you looked at the photo of you and Richard on your background. Both of you were laughing into the camera, arms around each other, sitting in Central Park, the beautiful, blazing sun all around you. The sunlight looked like halos circling your heads.
A few more days passed, coming to the day before Richard had to leave New York for his next project. He had to do something or regret it for the rest of his life. Richard’s phone was rarely more than a few feet away from him. But since you had left New York, it had rested so heavy in his pocket and his hands. He had checked social media every day, seeing no update from you, not even to put any of your holiday pictures up for followers to see.
I need to talk to you. The text was simple but to the point.
At work, you sneakily checked your phone behind your computer screen, and felt your heart leap in your chest at the sight of Richard’s name on the screen. However, a hole began to open in the pit of your stomach. What if he had read your diary and wanted to completely walk away from you? There was no way you could face that rejection; as selfish as it was, you preferred it how it already was, with you in control of the future of your friendship.
You couldn’t ignore him. Your hands shaking, you typed a message back to him. It was best to come clean with him and make a swift cut, even though it was breaking your heart every day.
I understand if you don’t want to be friends with me. I know you have my diary and have probably read it. I’m pathetic. Let’s just move on and go our separate ways.
One minute after your text had been sent, your phone began to vibrate in your hand. You dashed away from the desk, almost running into one of your colleagues who looked at you in sheer disgust. It seemed as if everyone lately were giving you those looks.
“Richard?” you asked, stepping out into a hallway.
“What did you mean by your last message? Go our separate ways?” he asked, his voice full of concern and fright. “What’s happened between us?”
“You have my diary,” you replied. Your heart was hammering and you tried your damned hardest to remain composed as your heart thundered in your chest and ears painfully.
“Yes, you left it here. But what’s that got to do with anything?”
“I know you’ve read it,” you accused. “And I think it’s best we just move on...”
Richard went quiet.
Your heart was now pulsating in your throat. “See? You don’t know what to say because it’s ridiculous.”
“I love you, too,” Richard blurted out.

Actually, Marshawn Lynch would make an amazing college speaker
Tumblr media
The former Seahawks RB has always given smart advice, if you listen to what he says.
A lot of NFL fans would be thrilled to have a chance to listen to a speech from running back Marshawn Lynch. Well, that’s exactly what Princeton University seniors are getting for their annual Class Day. On Feb. 25, the school announced Lynch as the speaker, while citing his work off the field in both social justice and community service work.
A week later, several Princeton students wrote an op-ed in the school newspaper criticizing the decision:
We wish to express our thoughts on the choice of the Class Day speaker for 2020 and propose improvements that could be made to the speaker selection process. As seniors, we had been looking forward to the speaker announcement for months. Many of us were disappointed when we saw that this year’s speaker was to be Marshawn Lynch, mainly because we did not feel included in the process by which this speaker was nominated and finally selected.
The letter goes on to mention there were many Princeton students who didn’t know who Lynch was, and that they didn’t feel included in the selection process. They were also critical of Lynch’s famous “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” answer he gave to every question at Super Bowl 49 media day. But Lynch’s persona goes way beyond that.
While it may be true Lynch doesn’t have a specific connection to Princeton, or he hasn’t always been the most talkative with reporters, he’s given some great life advice that would benefit graduating seniors. Let’s take a look at the wisdom of Beast Mode over the years.
Be smart with your money
In late December, the 33-year-old Lynch came out of retirement and signed a contract with the Seahawks to help them during their playoff run. After Seattle’s loss to the Packers in the Divisional Round, he gave a quick lesson to the younger players:
Marshawn Lynch goes on at length about his advice for young players. The gist: “Take care of your chicken.” Chicken = money pic.twitter.com/dydj7NB0d8
— Joe Fann (@Joe_Fann) January 13, 2020
It’s a vulnerable time for a lot of these young dudes. They need to be taking care of their chicken right, you feel me? If it was me, or if I had an opportunity to let these little young (players) know something, I’d say ‘take care of your money, African, cause that (expletive) don’t last forever.’ Now I’ve been on the other side of retirement and it’s good when you get over there and you can do what the (expletive) you want to, so I’ll tell y’all right now while y’all in it, take care of your bread so when you’re done, you go ahead and take care of yourself.
Lynch’s point here is simple: spend your money wisely, because you can’t play football forever. The money you earn from the sport won’t always be the same, either. Being financially smart with your money is good advice, whether you’re an NFL player or not. That will go a long way when you retire.
The former kid out of Oakland grew up to be an NFL star, and he wasn’t even known to have spent much of his career earnings.
Make sure your body and mind stay healthy, too
In the same postgame speech, Lynch went on to talk about the value of both physical and mental health:
So while y’all at it right now, take care of y’all’s bodies, take care of y’all’s chicken, take care of y’all’s mentals. Because look, we aint lasting that long. I had a couple players that I played with that they’re no longer here. They’re no longer. So start taking care of y’all mentals, y’all bodies and y’all chicken, so when you’re ready to walk away, you walk away and you can be able to do what you want to do.
This is important for NFL players, who take a beating throughout their careers, but it’s also a message for everyone. Take care of your body, mind, and spirit. Keeping all three of those healthy is crucial to living your best life.
Give back to others in need
Throughout his career, Lynch has been considered a great teammate who doesn’t hesitate to help those in need. As a broke high school student, he took his offensive line to Sizzler after his last game as a senior. He has given extravagant gifts to NFL teammates, too.
The generosity also extends to strangers. He once gave $500 to a McDonald’s employee who liked Lynch’s shoes.
“If you’re serious about getting those shoes, here’s some money to help you get ‘em,” Lynch told the employee. “My job is to continue to see you grow.”
His work with his Fam 1st Family Foundation in his hometown of Oakland, California, has impacted young people for years.
“We’re just trying to empower our inner-city youth,” Lynch explained in a 2014 SB Nation profile of his foundation. “Not just in our community, but communities around the world. We take the approach with ... our foundation with just giving the best opportunity, putting our best foot forward with trying to give back to our community, to give opportunities to these kids that they don’t have. Just the opportunity for them to see us is really big.”
When he was with the Raiders in 2018, the foundation sponsored a concert that required attendees to be registered to vote to attend. The same year, he hosted 25 kids in London when his team played Seattle at Wembley Stadium. The Raiders nominated him for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2018, which is given to players who are active in community service off the field.
Be there emotionally for others
Lynch places value on the little things, like greeting Seahawks defensive coordinator Ken Norton, Jr. at the airport after he lost a loved one:
Little known: When Ken Norton Jr. returned to Seattle last yr. after father's death 1 player met him at airport to support - Marshawn Lynch.
— Armando Salguero (@ArmandoSalguero) January 28, 2015
The gesture apparently made the coach cry, according to an ESPN profile on Lynch from 2018.
“He wanted to go sit with Ken and comfort him until he got on the airplane,” said Sherman Smith, Lynch’s position coach at the time. “That’s the kind of guy he was. He was always thinking about other people. He left our meeting and went to the airport, and Ken Norton, Jr. would tell you how much that meant to him that Marshawn would do that.”
Lynch also stayed behind in Dallas with Ricardo Lockette after the former Seahawks receiver suffered a career-ending neck injury. The injury happened during a road game against the Cowboys in 2015. Lynch didn’t go back to Seattle with the rest of the team, choosing to comfort Lockette instead.
“We were in there with Ricardo and everything was in a sad mode,” Earl Lockette, Sr., Ricardo’s dad, said via the Seattle Times. “A nurse comes up and says, ‘We don’t know much about football, Mr. Lockette, but there’s a guy outside who says he needs to be in here. He says he plays with Ricardo, and his name is Marshawn Lynch.’ I go to the lobby, and Marshawn has his bags. He said, ‘I knew it was more than what they told me when I saw him go down. I knew it was more severe than that and I could not leave him here.’
Lynch’s actions are a great example of how a little compassion for others can go a long way.
That’s why Lynch is *exactly* the type of speaker to have for a graduating class.
It is true that Lynch hasn’t said much to reporters in the past. He replied with “thank you for asking” to each question he was asked after a game in 2014. He told Deion Sanders that he’s “‘bout that action, boss” when explaining why he doesn’t like talking to the media.
But it’s clear Lynch actually does have a lot to say when you listen closely.
I understand why some Princeton students are perhaps confused by the choice to have Lynch as the Class Day speaker, but don’t knock Lynch until you hear his message. My guess is he’ll give you some pretty sage advice you can use in the future.
