RAIN COSTUME RANKINGS
(because i have a lot of feelings about this man 💜)
Look under the cut for my more in depth opinions lollll
Mortal Kombat Trilogy ~ Eh. It's the same as every other ninja in MK3. Since it's his first costume though, it gets a slight pass.
Mortal Kombat Annihilation ~ This ain't it. The vest part is somewhat interesting, but the clunky mask??? NAH. It's too much like his MK3 costume. Also this version of Rain kinda gives me uncanny vibes lolll??? And on the wiki it says a black dude played him in the movie and this picture is def not of a black dude??? 🤨
Mortal Kombat Conquest ~ A worse version of Annihilation's costume. No color, no personality, no interesting details. What do I learn about Rain from this costume? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Mortal Kombat Armageddon ~ THE CRÉME DELA CRÉME OF RAIN COSTUMES! This is the first time we see him with a crown/helmet, which shows that he views himself as being superior to other people. The color is a rich purple, which also indicates his powerful heritage (in history, purple was a rare color in clothing and was reserved for the wealthy). His hair is exposed for the first time, adding personality to his character. The heavy jewelry and embroidered cape shows his inflated ego. He's got an assassin's knife, which shows that he is a traitor to the realm of Edenia... Like Netherrealm hit it out of the park on their FIRST TRY!!!
Mortal Kombat Armageddon Alternate ~ I love the reddish-purple color of this costume bruh. The crown is still there but the fact that they covered up his hair again isn't my most favorite. It's starting to lean back into MK3 territory, but it has gold embellishments that keep me from completely hating it.
Mortal Kombat 9 ~ The purple in this costume is NOT. HITTING. IT'S SO UGLY. I feel like a lot of the costumes in MK9 were muted (except for Jade and Mileena), and that makes the game seem a lot flatter. Rain looks like a warrior with this costume, not a demi-god. Where's the gold? Where's the showboating? The shoulder pads and the designs on his torso are the only things that I truly like from this design. The crown on his cowl is barely visible... That is NO BUENO.
Mortal Kombat X ~ MKX my beloved, you never fail to disappoint with the costume designs. The crown, the golden jewelry and red jewels, the shade of purple (a dark purple indicating a sinister character), the CROP TOP 👀, his hair being exposed, his lil jagged cape that shows that he's been through the ringer trying to get Mileena to power?!?! I have nothing bad to say about this design; It fits his personality SO WELL 💜💜💜
Mortal Kombat 11 Perfect Storm ~ This costume is growing on me. I like the color, all the gold and silver accoutrements are very well placed, his new weapon is different and makes his kombat more exciting. I feel like there could be more though. This is almost perfect.
Mortal Kombat 11 Son of Argus ~ Bro looks like he's about to go play rugby lol 😭 I HATE IT! He doesn't look like himself AT ALL! What is that helmet/cowl thing he's wearing!? He's wearing the same belt from the previous costume in this one! It screams I threw this together at the last minute! Once again, he looks too much like a fighter... At least in MK9, he had some regal elements in his design. Also all the variant colors for this costume are so ugly????? Bruh throw it out
Mortal Kombat 11 Weathered By Kombat ~ By far the most regal costume of MK11. I like the golden horns, the HUGE golden belt along with all the little storm ensigns, and the draping design of the costume is absolutely serving. I love and hate the spikey parts of this costume because it makes sense for his character, but it doesn't flow well with the rest of the costume. Also the mask could be better (which I know can be exchanged, but the default one is meh). The rings are a new detail!
Mortal Kombat 11 Hidden By Argus ~ It's giving assassin, not demi-god. It's too sleek. Overall the design is good, but it's not loud enough for me. I need more. Color palates for this costume though are the best (especially positioned for success 😉)
Mortal Kombat 11 Ending ~ Bald Rain is cursed 🤷 There's also no personality in the outfit at all bruh. It's not even the right color.
Mortal Kombat 1 Storm of the Century ~ It's not the worst, it's not the best. The lavender purple is pretty and I'm ok with this version of Rain having that color instead of a more vibrant shade. The orange/yellow tho... That was a choice. The designs on his hood are cool, but I'm not a fan of all the ropes he has on his body. I don't think mages need that many ropes lol... Unless they into some freaky shit hehe
Mortal Kombat 1 High Mage ~ Now THIS is a Rain costume! The little epaulettes are cute and I LOVE the designs on his torso! His little bedazzled mask is funny to me lol 😆 Also the default color is really nice! I wish the buttons were gold instead of brown in the middle of his shirt; It makes him look a little bit like a sailor from the 17th and 18th century lol. Though the fact that we get to see his hair in his costume... That makes up for every other flaw on god.

Aftermath - MK1 Rain
This is my interpretation of what happened immediately after the events of Rains character ending; his POV, of course. Featuring Havik as well.
Slow, heaving breaths. In and out through his mouth. The air burnt his throat as it went down to fill his lungs. His fingers curled into the earth below, dirt coating his hands and knees from where he lay on the ground. Rain could not focus on anything, the empty feeling in his bones weighed him down, and made him feel weightless at the same time.
The ground beneath his hands welcomed him as his fingers clawed into it. He could feel the rage leaving his body in waves, draining him of any energy he had left. Rain did not think he was capable of such anger, such power. He could barely lift his head up to observe what he had done — though at this angle, the cliff edge blocked his view completely.
A manic laughter started from somewhere to his right, echoing through Rain's skull. “By all the Gods- Rain! You did not tell me you could do things like this!” Rain didn’t really remember what happened, only that it was the most difficult thing he had ever done in his life. He had to channel so much energy into the magic that he lay now on his hands and knees, unable to force himself up.
There came a long moment of silence filled with Rain's ragged breaths — and an occasional, airy laugh from Havik — before the quiet was broken. “Rain?” There was an edge to Haviks voice, one of concern though he would never admit that, especially not to Rain.
He could not respond, no matter how hard he tried. Rain vaguely felt a hand gently laying on the base of his neck. He could see Havik crouching down from out of the corner of his eye. “Rain? C’mon get up, you gotta see this.”
His breathing slowed, and he was able to push up with his hands so that he was sitting on his legs, leaning back so his eyes could see nothing but the cloudy sky above. It was dark, each cloud a shade of gray, though slowly they started to dissipate. Rain could feel his hood slide back off his head, and he reached up to pull his mask off of his mouth. Haviks hand left his neck and instead reached under Rain's right arm to throw over his own shoulder. Rain accepted the help gratefully as the latter heaved him up to his feet. Rain groaned and leaned into Haviks side, his legs threatening to buckle under him. He blinked slowly as he looked upon the sight before him, sure that he had gone insane.
The space between the cliff they were standing on and the mountain in the distance held nothing but water. The only thing breaking its surface was the top of one of Seido’s temples. Everything else was submerged in the still water. The entire city was gone.
Rain's breath hitched and he could not comprehend what he was seeing. The city was gone, he did that? He did this? No that, that wasn’t right. Rain wasn’t strong enough to do that. This level of destruction shouldn’t even be possible.
Havik laughed again, “See? Isn’t it glorious? I did not know you had this in you, friend!”
Rain still could not believe it, he did all of that? Surely he was dreaming, he was not yet powerful enough to do anything close to this caliber. He swallowed down the lump building in his throat, “Outworld will- will catch wind of this soon. We should go.” The words burned as they left his mouth.
Havik grumbled, knowing Rain was right, but not wanting to leave the wonderful sight of a destroyed Seido so soon. “Can you walk?”
Rain shifted his weight back to his feet — taking his arm off of Haviks shoulder — and swayed a bit, though otherwise was able to stand on his own. He nodded and steadied himself before trying to turn to the forest behind them. Rain put his entire focus onto walking, one foot in front of the other, and repeat. Again, repeat. One foot in front of the other. Aagin. Havik may not have been supporting him, but he was still standing much closer to Rain than he normally would — he was likely preparing in case Rain collapsed or lost his footing.
He was only half-listening to Haviks excited rambling, he was saying something about Seido. Rain was a bit taken aback by the abrupt bitter taste that entered his mouth. He wanted this. Rain wanted to take down Seido and its incredibly oppressive forces. It's something that he's always hoped for.
They rightfully deserved it, their tyrannical “government” oppressed its people and led for them barely survivable lives; Rain has seen this for himself multiple times. So why did he feel like he did something wrong?
He was suddenly very cold, but his skin was coated in sweat. The forest around them seemed to spin and fold in on itself, and again Rain could barely lift his head. His legs started to shake so he stopped walking — as if Rain was going to continue much longer, being as dizzy and lightheaded as he was — and closed his eyes.
Rain felt… hollow; like someone had taken all of his bones from his body. He could hear Havik stop talking, but anything said after was muffled and faraway.
Each intake of air stabbed spears through his brain, and impossibly still, even with his eyes closed, he could feel the ground below begin to twist and spin. Trying to steady himself, Rain leaned down to hold his knees with his hands, each breath coming out broken through his mouth.
Havik was talking, but Rain could not hear the words. He opened his eyes to the ground below to concentrate on something, anything. The leaves swam in his vision and the colors blurred together.
With shaking hands, Rains eyes rolled to the back of his head and he collapsed on the forest floor.

Tell It to My Heart
[Reiko/rain, mlm, fluff, mild injuries, mention of wounds and blood, no other tws to mention]
With each sweet whisper of tired talks, each tender touch, Reiko felt the weight of his burdens begin to lift, replaced by a sense of peace that washed over him like a cleansing tide. In Rain's arms, he found redemption, a second chance at the love he had thought lost forever.
Reiko stumbled into Rain's secluded chambers within the royal palace, his once-immaculate armor now marred by slashes and dents, and his skin adorned with aching bruises and bleeding wounds. The mission had been a rather brutal skirmish against rebellious forces, and though they had emerged victorious, the toll on Reiko was evident in every weary step he took.
Rain, seated at his desk amidst a clutter of scrolls and worn-out books and journals, looked up with a mixture of concern and relief as Reiko entered the room. "By the Elder Gods, what the hell happened to you?" Rain's voice was full of worry as he rose from his seat, his violet eyes widening at the sight of his friend's battered state.
"It's nothing," Reiko grunted through clenched teeth, attempting to brush off Rain's concern. "Just a few scratches."
Of course, he'd say something dumb like that.
Rain's gaze narrowed skeptically as he approached Reiko, his graceful movements belying the urgency in his actions. "Scratches?" he echoed, disbelief evident in his tone as he took in the extent of Reiko's injuries. "These wounds are far from superficial. You need medical attention."
Reiko waved off Rain's suggestion dismissively, though the pain that flared with each movement belied his attempt at nonchalance. "I'll be fine, just wanted to see you." he insisted stubbornly, though even he could hear the strain in his voice.
Rain sighed, his expression softening with empathy as he approached Reiko, his movements deliberate and gentle. "You are not fine," he chided softly, his voice a soothing balm to the ache that throbbed beneath Reiko's skin. "Let me help you."
Reluctantly, Reiko agreed, knowing he could not deny Rain's steadfast insistence. With a resigned nod, he began to unfasten the clasps of his bloodied armor, each movement sending a jolt of pain coursing through his weary body.
Rain stepped forward, his movements fluid as he assisted Reiko in removing the cumbersome plates of armor. "Sit," he instructed gently, guiding Reiko to a nearby chair with a firm yet gentle hand.
Reiko complied wordlessly, allowing himself to sink into the chair with a weary sigh as Rain retrieved a small first aid kit from a nearby shelf. With practiced efficiency, Rain set to work cleaning and dressing Reiko's wounds, his touch gentle yet sure as he tended to each injury with meticulous care.
As Rain worked, the tension that had coiled tightly within Reiko's muscles began to unravel, replaced by a sense of calm that settled over him like a comforting embrace. Despite the pain that still pulsed beneath his skin, there was a strange comfort in Rain's presence, a silent reassurance that washed over him like a healing tide.
For a time, the only sound in the room was the soft murmur of Rain's voice as he worked, his words a soothing melody that echoed in the quiet corners of Reiko's mind. With each gentle touch, each careful bandage applied, Reiko felt the walls he had built around himself begin to crumble, revealing the vulnerability that lay hidden beneath his stoic facade.
As Rain tended to Reiko's wounds, the two men fell into a comfortable silence, broken only by the occasional hiss of pain from Reiko as Rain applied antiseptic to a particularly deep cut. In that quiet, Reiko found himself drawn to Rain in a way he could not fully comprehend, his thoughts drifting to the bond that had formed between them over the years.
"You know," Rain spoke up suddenly, interrupting the quiet reverie that had settled over them, "you really should be more careful out there. We cannot afford to lose you." Although what he truly meant was I cannot afford to lose you.
Reiko's gaze flickered to Rain's face, his heart skipping at the concern in his friend's features. "I will keep that in mind," he murmured softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Rain finished tending to Reiko's wounds, securing the last bandage with a gentle yet firm touch. "There," he said, stepping back to admire his handiwork, "good as new."
Reiko flexed his muscles experimentally, testing the strength of the bandages with a nod of approval. "Thank you, Rain." he said, his voice tinged with gratitude.
Rain smiled warmly, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he met Reiko's gaze. "Anytime, my friend," he replied, his tone warm and sincere.
As Reiko donned his armor again, he couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between them, an unspoken understanding that lingered in the air. With each passing moment, he found himself drawn deeper into the gravity of Rain's presence, his thoughts consumed by the enigma of their relationship.
“You should spend the night here.” Rain spoke quietly, his gaze becoming soft and tender as he looked up at Reiko. Perhaps… one night couldn't hurt. Reiko couldn’t hide the soft smile that came to his face. There was a certain charm to Rain, enough for Reiko to allow himself to be this vulnerable in the presence of the water mage. The notion of it brought a sense of comfort to both of them. He nodded, agreeing to spend the night with him.
In the quiet solitude of Rain’s chambers, they found themselves lying entwined in each other's embrace. Reiko allowed himself to ponder the nature of their bond, the echoes of their shared history reverberating in the depths of his soul. There was a warmth in Rain's touch, a familiarity that whispered of a connection that transcended the boundaries of friendship.
Time seemed to blur within the confines of Rain's secluded room, the hours slipping away unnoticed as Reiko and Rain lingered in the quiet sanctuary of their shared solitude. In the soft glow of candlelight, they found solace in each other's presence, their words a symphony of shared memories and unspoken truths.
With each passing moment, Reiko found himself drawn deeper into the labyrinth of Rain's mind, his thoughts entwined with the intricate threads of their shared history. There was a vulnerability in Rain's gaze, a raw honesty that mirrored the depths of Reiko's own soul.
As they lay in each other's arms, Reiko felt the walls he had built around himself crumble, revealing the fragile heart hidden beneath his stoic exterior. In Rain's presence, he found a refuge from the world's chaos, a sanctuary where he could lay bare the scars that marked his journey.
With each sweet whisper of tired talks, each tender touch, Reiko felt the weight of his burdens begin to lift, replaced by a sense of peace that washed over him like a cleansing tide. In Rain's arms, he found redemption, a second chance at the love he had thought lost forever.
As they surrendered to the pull of their shared desire, Reiko felt the echoes of their past melt away, consumed by the flames of passion that burned between them. In that fleeting moment, they were no longer warriors bound by duty, but two souls intertwined in a dance as old as time itself. In the quiet hours before dawn, Reiko felt the warmth of Rain's touch wash over him like a gentle caress, soothing the wounds that had long festered within his heart. And as he drifted off to sleep, he knew he had found his home in the arms of the one he loved.
The dawn broke with a soft glow, casting a warm embrace over the tangled forms of Reiko and Rain as they slept, their bodies intertwined in a peaceful slumber. In that quiet moment, amidst the stillness of the early morning, Reiko felt a sense of contentment wash over him, a feeling of completeness that he had long sought but never dared to hope for.
As the first rays of sunlight filtered through the window, Reiko stirred awake, his gaze lingering on the sleeping form of Rain beside him. There was a tranquility in the way Rain slept, a serenity that seemed to envelop him like a protective cocoon.
With a soft sigh, Reiko reached out to gently brush a strand of brown hair away from Rain's face, his touch light as a feather against the smooth curve of his cheek. At that moment, he felt an overwhelming affection for the man lying beside him, a certain tenderness and adoration towards the other man.
As Rain awoke from his sleep, his eyes fluttering open to meet Reiko's gaze, Reiko knew with a certainty that this was where he belonged, in the arms of the man who had captured his heart. As they rose from their sleepy embrace, the world's weight seemed to lift from Reiko's shoulders, replaced by a sense of light that buoyed his spirit.
With a small smile, Rain reached out to caress Reiko's cheek, his gentle touch filled with unspoken affection. "Good morning," he murmured softly, his voice a melody that danced in the quiet space between them."Morning," Reiko replied, his voice filled with a tired sense of warmth as he leaned into Rain's touch, savoring the moment's intimacy.
"I've been thinking," Reiko began hesitantly, his voice soft as he met Rain's gaze. "About us, about what this means." Rain's expression softened with understanding, his hand lowering from his cheek to reach out to cover Reiko's with a reassuring squeeze. "I know, " he murmured, his voice a gentle caress. "And I've been thinking too."
The weight of Rain's words hung heavy in the air between them, the unspoken question lingering on Reiko's lips. What did Rain truly think of him? Was he someone truly worth loving? Before Reiko could voice his fears, Rain spoke, his words a wave of relief over the soldier.
"I love you, Reiko." he confessed, his voice filled with a quiet certainty that left no room for doubt.
With a smile that reached his eyes, Reiko leaned forward to press a gentle kiss to Rain's lips, savoring the sweetness of their newfound connection.
“I love you too."
