I know right? I'm not used to pressing the caps lock button ahahah though I suppose it is a good habit to re-learn

Oh he would be so excited, he LOVES tinkering with those kinds of things, studying how they work and using what he learned for his own creations. And a whole pinball machine? He'd be in heaven. His workshop would be practically inaccessible with all the machine parts scattered all over the floor (though they'd still be neatly organized in little piles so he knows which part is which). He wouldn't shut up about it either, the pinball machine would be the only thing he'd talk about for the entire time he gets to dissect and study it.

Some of the family members would be thrilled about it. Grimm always loves listening to FPK talk about those things, he often asks him to describe what he's working on step by step simply because he enjoys listening to his voice, though he ends up learning a lot of facts in the process. So by the time FPK's craze was over, Grimm would know so much about the intricacies of a pinball machine that he'd be able to tell exactly which part does what, even though he doesn't have much interest in engineering himself.

Holly would be just as interested, and they'd love assisting FPK with his work, particularly sorting each component into a neat pile with cute little notes that they made. Similarly to Grimm, they love hearing FPK explain what he's doing, so they would have no problem with him rambling about it all day.

Hornet, not so much. She'd get very annoyed about it, though part of her does like seeing her father happy and excited. But gods, he would not shut up about the damn machine, and at some point it would be too much to her. Asking him how much sugar he wants in his tea? He mumbles the answer and then immediately asks her if she wants to see the cool machine part he's been studying for the past hour. She'd just roll her eyes and go make the stupid tea haha

Lewk would be very excited to help his dad, but he gets too distracted by the cool shiny parts and often causes a bit of a mess, so Grimm has to remind him not to bother his other dad too much. Lewk would be a little disappointed, but he's such an energetic little thing that he'd have no issue finding something equally as interesting, so it's pretty easy to distract him.

Zote would just call the machine a stupid piece of junk and do the screw loose emoji thing at Hornet whenever FPK goes on yet another tangent about the mechanisms of a pinball machine during dinner. He probably ended tripping over one of those loose parts laying on the floor, and cursing at everyone around him. So you know, I can't really blame him for considering this whole thing stupid. Though man, what a killjoy he is.

Sonic Unleashed would've been better as an inertia based, 3D physics platformer. In the day stages.

Not in an "I don't like the boost gameplay" kind of way, it's not my favorite but Unleashed and Gens are still good games, I mean for the sake of consistency of control. You teach the player in Windmill Isle how Sonic controls in this one, X to boost, A to jump, B to stomp/slide, LB/RB to side step, LT/RT to drift. Sonic controls like a tank you have to use these tools to guide him like a missile through reaction challenges in 3D, and platforming challenges in 2D. There's more to it, but that's the core right?

Ok, now forget literally all of that because the only thing we're keeping from any of it is that A is jump. Here's a God of War-esque combat system with...weirdly good 3D platforming sections and light, Adventure 1-esque puzzle solving?

Ok, now give Day Sonic the same level of 3D control as the Werehog and his basic mechanics from the Adventure games, polished up a little so scripted loops and corkscrews aren't necessary, then make the transition. NOW, it feels less like you're playing 2 separate games stapled together, and instead, you're playing 1 game which changes up its pacing with puzzle solving and combat mechanics. Aside from Unleashed level themes just seeming really fun to do Sonic style physics platforming in, it makes the whole package more cohesive, the night stages becoming an extension of the gameplay of the day stages, rather than something fundamentally different from the other half of the game.

Generations would benefit from a change like this too, though at least there, there's a conceptual reason to differentiate them mechanically, you want to really emphasize the difference between Modern and Classic Sonic, so one gets the Unleashed style boost mechanics, and one gets an admittedly VERY imperfect take on the 2D style physics gameplay. If the Modern stages were essentially 3D takes on the classic inertia gameplay, they'd get to JUST BE 3D, with none of the 2.5D stuff to allow Modern Sonic to do actual platforming challenges, which would mean Classic stages would have more meaning as the only parts of the game that play out in 2D.

Been watching gameplay from Sonic Dream Team, and it got me thinking about the good boost games (my feelings on Colors are complicated, but mostly middling to negative, and I would murder Forces with my bare hands if it were a person). Sort of killed most of my excitement for the gameplay of it, but on the bright side, the presentation elements all seem to be top notch and it still looks to be a solid take on the boost gameplay, sort of demonstrating even better than Frontiers did that THAT type of gameplay works a lot better when you give the player full 360 degrees of movement and good control over the camera.

It's just not a physics based Sonic game, so I care a lot less, and feel a lot less bad about not being able to play it without Apple stuff. Might pick it up anyway if it gets ported to Switch, to satiate my curiosity and get a more thorough understanding of it for discussion purposes.

Birdwatching got really popular in the early days of the Unpleasantness. However, now that the bosses are forcing us all back to the office, the birds don't have anyone to watch them. That's why I built an autonomous bird-observation robot. Its name is SparrowScope 9000, and I recommend not becoming too emotionally attached to it, because it is your competition.

There's a lot of obvious benefits to having a robotic birdwatcher. It can start up early in the morning and go to its charging dock late at night. It never makes a mistake identifying a bird. It won't get tired, cold, hungry, or develop pointless drama with "Uncle" Hudson Carl online over his fucking misdocumentation of Northern Cardinals. You can pop over to its little webpage and see what it spotted that day, and feel pretty good. It's like you're really there, even though you're stuck in an office building wondering if you have enough staples loaded in your stapler to get through the month, or if you should maybe talk to Jan in Requisitioning to get a fresh refill.

However, there are flaws. One of the big things is that the US military doesn't let regular people – civilians – have super-accurate GPS. They fuck with the data a little bit, so that you can't somehow threaten national security by knowing where you are. I didn't know this before I started on the project, and the bird sanctuary has a lot of elevated walkways ever since the flood. SparrowScope 9000 became more of a SoggyScope Wet-Thousand.

If a real technology company had assembled it, that would probably have been the end of the story. They'd have put in some total garbage like a modern microcontroller, maybe some parts made in this century. Not me. This thing is half old pinball machine parts and the other half Aibos. It kept trucking right down the river, and I never saw it again. I do get updates from it periodically as it spots a new bird, but my work schedule forbids me from taking a few days off to drive to the next county over and see if I can figure out which swamp it's floated into this time.

Even with this small disaster, I'm pretty proud of what I accomplished. Our avian friends get looked at by a creepy robot covered in seaweed, and we can all experience what it was like for one brief, shining moment in which we still had hobbies.
