Controversial opinion but, shit like racism in media shouldn't be counted as a dark or edgy theme, and white people should NEVER be praised or labeled as "bold" for putting it in their works.
I'm so tired of discrimination that people of color face being seen as something spicy to add to a plot. For example, American Horror Story is written by a white gay man (Ryan Murphy) and he repeatedly puts racism and racist themes in his shows, a lot of which is him over stepping as a white individual and adding in discrimination solely for shock factor. That and you can tell that he never consults POC before addressing or putting racism in his shows in general.
Meanwhile, writers of color who make anti-racism books that are educational and revolve around race or non white history, get sidelined. This also happens to directors of color who make movies surrounding race and racism that aren't horror or action related. Which really goes to show not only white privilege within the writing, publishing, and movie industry but also that white folks won't even give racism a thought unless it's presented in a way that makes them feel better or makes their gut wrench.
Racism isn't a tool to make things darker or give white characters a pat on the back just cause they aren't racist themselves. White people, especially white directors and writers, often disregard POC who consume their content and how that effects us, and that racism is a legit form of discrimination which can get people killed, therefore adding it in to "shake up the story" is in horrible taste.
White people truly can't handle race and racism topics, whether it's in a fictional universe or a legitimate talk irl. Y'all either end up comparing POC to animals or creatures by putting us side by side with fictional monsters or having x monster group equal "the oppressed" and the humans "the privileged". Or y'all end up erasing race entirely therefore that equals "racism solved and gone" in your heads. Just stick to watching and writing shit like The Notebook since apparently that's all y'all can handle.
[White folks feel free to reblog this but don't rerail (even via tags), POC however feel free to add onto this with articles, more examples that I haven't listed, more information about what I've already talked about, or personal views!]
