kung lao in the spider-monk au

none of this super awesome epic story will make sense without PART 1 !!! explains how liu kang became spiderman

when liu leaves for america, lao is hurt. he knows, logically, that raiden is the one to blame, but liu didn't even fight to stay or take lao with him.

and then deadpool comes along.

the vigilante slash mercenary is just stopping by, purely coincidence. decided he wanted to see the place. kung lao, of course, was naturally curious, and approched to say hello. to his surprise, deadpool is fluent in mandarin, and they strike up a lengthy conversation about their different lives. at one point, deadpool mentions "his spider-monk back home". kung lao naturally asks about it.

deadpool pulls out his phone, and pulls up a selfie of him and spidey- spidey's mask is half- up his face, and he's in the middle of trying to eat a taquito. deadpool is going on about the selfie, but.. kung lao is focused on the face. the lips of this 'spidey'. they have the exact two matching scars that liu's lips have, from when they were 8 and had the brilliant idea to get into body modification. it's the same mouth kung lao has seen scarfing down soup after training that reaches for a bit of taquito in the picture.

deadpool realises after a few seconds of silence that kung lao is in shock. and then that kung lao is crying. oh, shit.

kung lao spills immediately. he's ranting. he's raving.

HOW could liu do this?? first, leave without a hint of remorse to america of all places, second, start taking up dangerous hobbies, and third, NEVER FUCKING TELL HIM????? what was he thinking!? the idiot will get himself killed doing stupid shit without kung lao there.

deadpool offers the condolence that "he's definitely guilty about it, and i know he misses you. assuming, here, that you're the 'other half' he's always waxing poetic about."

and then, because he's an agent of chaos, deadpool offers payback: a secret to keep from liu. that way they're even. deadpool can offer training. (aka, wade really likes this kid and wants an excuse to hang about)

lao accepts immediately.

it's the next month that sees good news finally arrive-- in the best decision he's made since the 18th century, raiden is sending kung lao overseas to be with liu kang.

kung lao moves in on liu's last day of school.

raiden never told liu that lao was coming. liu kang comes home to find lao standing in the flat, like an idiot, staring at the doorway.

hugs. embraces.

then kung lao gives liu the tongue-lashing of the century. liu, fully aware at this point he's been a dick, takes it. then they hug again.

they spend the entire summer break together causing chaos in NYC, finally back together again, the dynamic duo.

and then liu discovers kung lao's secret-

not only has kung lao been training with deadpool, he's started his own stint as a vigilante.

needless to say, the fight that ensues is a whirlwind of huge, horrible emotions, name-calling, blame-throwing, and hurtful words.

they've made up by the end of the night anyway, because they both get miserably sad when they're mad at each other. unfortunately, their solution to the newfound power imbalance they've correctly identified as the unfair factor is possibly the dumbest plan any teenage vigilante has EVER thought of.

they're going to infiltrate oscorp, steal one of those fancy spiders that bit liu, have it bite lao so he has powers too, and then be on their merry way.

and they do it. and it fucking works. by some miracle, it works. peter and ned, now in on the secret, are their guys in the chair. mj is their strategist. they infiltrate, they steal, they escape, and oscorp are none the wiser. and even more miraculous, the spider doesn't kill kung lao.

kung lao develops powers, though they're slightly different from liu's-- he can't stick to things, and he isn't quite as strong. however, his regeneration is more comparable to deadpool's than to liu's, and he's got bones of steel-- he's practically impossible to hurt now. fitting.

and so he takes his RIGHTFUL place at liu's side as an equal vigilante, and after they're out of their month-long grounding for pulling that stunt without telling matt anything, they're a veritable vigilante family. matt is trying to obtain legal guardianship over them, and they're fine with that.

(lao, as a vigilante, calls himself styx. he's visually not a successor to deadpool, but when you see him on the field, deadpool's humor and violent tendencies have very much rubbed off on him.)

I WANTED TO MAKE MORE THAN JUST THIS but it took like. a week to get done and im sick these days

anyways in light of mk1's nonsense i revisited some koncepts i had for a roleswap au. i took hanzo's inspiration from a mix of mkx and mk11 outfits and kuai i kind of just winged it based off my own preferences in past appearances!!

more rambling is under the cut about the actual AU :-]

SO I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY DEVELOPED THIS BEYOND SOME OLD SKETCHES I HAD OF KUAI'S DESIGN but i had some general ideas of how this was supposed to work???

the shirai ryu is still alive and well! he's still a family man and very clan oriented. satoshi is still born and grows into his clan's responsibilities, however harumi dies in child birth.

the lin kuei on the other hand is Not Doing Well. they end up getting wiped out during a raid from the shirai ryu and most of kuai's immediate family (whether by choice or blood) ends up going down with them.

prior to this kuai ends up passing after a failed mission to retrieve the map of elements from the shaolin temple in an attempt to prove himself to his clan. (instead of bi-han being the one set on that path, kuai ends up taking the initiative instead WAY before he's ready without anyone's knowledge and ends up dying when met with scorpion.)

most of it is similar how it is in actual canon for how scorpion's story goes. he gets resurrected he pledges loyalty to quan chi in order to get revenge, blah blah blah. mortal kombat happens. the two meet again at some point.

kuai's still on that "you killed my family" juice but its...more so about familial ties (like bi-han and smoke) rather than it being the love(s) of his life (like hanzo's wife and son) , seeing as he died young from his own overzealous nature.

very much has anger issues. he's impatient and has alot shorter of a temper by comparison to scorpion in the original canon. hardly ever humbled until that point lol

hanzo on the other hand is surprisingly more lax. meditates often, drinks alot of tea and while he *IS* stressed he handles it alot better than kuai does. maybe has a problem of ignoring his problems though for the sake of the task at hand.

kuai ends up harassing hanzo alot in this AU even outside of the tournament. he's kind of a bitchy ghost there to remind hanzo of what happened to him and lowkey hanzo guilts over it.

kuai has alot of grim reaper motifs in his design. he carries a scythe made of ice primarily and fights at a more long distance range.

hanzo on the other hand is alot more of an up close brawler. he keeps alot of design traits from mkx with a bit of mk11 sprinkled in for inspiration of his "classic" design.

STILL A PYROMANCER!! i just havent thought out how. he's just regarded with a bit more respect for having those unnatural abilities lol

but yeah this is just me spitballing in bullet points. i'm hoping to make more stuff later that is a bit more...thought out properly but it follows more of like

mk mythologies --> mk9 -> mkx

type of timeline i guess? except hanzo is in bi-han's position and kuai ends up being put in scorpion's. bi-han doesn't really have a place in the AU outside of being a background character and driving motive for kuai's vengeance later on. (though we're not gonna talk about how bi-han's mentality eventually fed into kuai's at a young age and made him come to the conclusions he did before he died.... maybe.)

smoke exists for the sake of painful flashbacks lol

satoshi's also a bg character but he does end up growing up with the shirai ryu and takes on his own share of clan responsibilities. idk whether or not he takes after hanzo's pyromancy or not in this AU but either way he grows up to be a well respected figure in the clan!

alot of stuff outside of this remains the same though, just the lin kuei and shirai ryu's dynamics get swapped.

The Kombat Kids after another failed exercise against the Lin Kuei, after which they hang out in one of the lounge rooms of the temple to rest and complain, not realizing Bi-Han was also in the room:

Cassie: Every time! No matter how hard we fight or train or anything Kuai Liang keeps beating us. It doesn’t matter how in sync we think we are, nothing works.

Bi-Han: Teamwork isn’t the issue here. It’s your own heads getting in the way of you succeeding.

Cassie: Jesus Fu-! God damn shadows!

Jin: Oh, and I suppose you know what our mental baggage is?

Bi-Han: Please, with how often you kids come in here bitching and moaning all the time, I know everything there is to know about you brats.

Bi-Han, pointing at Jacqui: For example, Briggs throws herself into her work, striving for perfection she’ll never achieve and approval she’ll never receive, at least not outwardly.

Jacqui shrinks into the couch.

Bi-Han points to Takeda: Chujin Takahashi is a bleeding heart who wants to solve everybody else’s problems except his own. The list of which is about a mile long.

Takeda: What? No. That’s not… no. I’m fine! I’m… fine…

Bi-Han: You, Shaolin, judge everyone and everything because you hate yourself and finding fault in everything around you is the only way to make yourself feel better.

Jin, flipping him off: Fuck you.

Bi-Han, turning to Cassie: Little Miss Golden Child here puts on an air of confidence and arrogance but pull back the sheet and it’s all anxiety and imposter syndrome. She has to constantly remind everyone of her achievements in a desperate bid to try and convince herself she’s good enough to be in the position she has.

Cassie: That’s not-!

Bi-Han: And Frost, tch, you don’t even what to know what her deal is.

Frost just glares.

Bi-Han: Point is, you kids only pretend to think you’re tough shit. Until you actually start believing it, all you’re going to do is keep failing over and over again. Get out of your own heads.

This is based off my au but I like to imagine Bi-Han regaining his humanity, taking orders from no one, but still looks like Noob, so everyone’s convinced he’s still like Noob. And he just uses this to troll people. Like:

Frost on her first mission to Outworld, standing in the middle of a crowed street and turns around to see Noob staring at her and she just- pauses.

Then he takes a step forward, causing her to take a step back. They do this a couple times and then he starts sprinting at her. Cue the most terrifying chase of her life because Noob’s know to have extreme prejudice against the Lin Kuei and has tried to murder his own brother several times.

Just before he grabs her, he just teleports away, leaving her shaken and anxious as all hell.

Bi-Han, returning to his temporary hide out with a shit eating grin: Did you see that?

Sareena: What? You nearly giving that poor girl a heart attack?

Havik, perking up: Did you have fun?

Bi-Han, side stepping her to look at him: Absolutely.

Sareena: Well, I’m glad you’re happy, but if you ignore me again I’ll cut off what’s left of your nose.

Meanwhile…

You work in a coffee shop and it's closing time, you're just finishing some work, cleaning the tables then you heard the door open, “Hello, Sorry but we're closed-” you said as you look from the door and seeing a guy wearing a black pants, black button up shirt and a long black coat on top of it, he's also wearing a shades and had a cocky grin on his face, “Oh, sorry love, I'll pay for your extra time I just need something to drink, I heard that the coffee here is great.” He smiled at you, hands in his pocket, “Yeah we do make great coffee, just sit there for a moment I'll finish this up and I'll get your order right away.” You said as you smiled back at him, “Perfect, thank you love.” He sat down at the table that you've been cleaning, setting his phone down In Front of him as he looked up at you, “So, what's your name?” “Y/N.” You replied back to him, “Y/N, That's a beautiful name for a beautiful lady.” He teased you, smiling and admiring how beautiful you are, “Thank you…that's-” you can't seem to say anything after he just said that, “I'm sorry if that made you a little blush, I'm being rude-” he extended his hands at you, offering a handshake, “Johnny Cage.” “Nice to meet you, Mr. Cage-” you shake his hand smiling as you do, He frowned thinking what makes you not surprised or not excited, “Don't you know who I am? Thee Johnny Cage, Ninja mime?? Does that ring a bell to you?” “I beg your pardon?” He chuckled, “I'm a Hollywood superstar, dear.” He said smiling at you, surprised that there's people who don't know or recognize him, “Oh- shit. Uhm- I'm sorry! I didn't know you're an actor-” you apologize to him as you went to the counter to get his order, “Don't sweat it, Y/N,” he said as he followed you to the counter, “You working alone tonight?” “Yes, I always work alone at night-” you said as you looked up at him, still embarrassed. “So about your order, what would that be again?” You said smiling at him, “One Caffé Americano and hmm- no make that two caffé Americano, Thank you.” He said grabbing his wallet, “Right got it, two caffé Americano for Johnny Cage.” You teased him, “Thank you, Y/N, Here-” he said giving you an extra bill, “This is too much Mr. Cage, your total is only $30-” “Keep the rest, Y/N, You deserve it for working this late.” He said, winking at you, “And also Call me Johnny.” you smiled at him, “Ok, Thank you, Johnny.” You replied to him, taking the $200 that he gave to you, you put the tip to your pocket as you made your way to make Johnny's coffee.

Johnny went back to his table, patiently waiting for you and his coffee. He likes the way you smile at him, the way you say his name, He likes how cute you are when you're feeling embarrassed, He's starting to like you even though he just met you a couple of minutes ago.

You finished preparing Johnny's coffee as you bring the coffee to him, “Here you go, Johnny-” you said as you set the coffees in his table, “Enjoy your coffee, I'll clean up-” you were about to go then he grabbed your hands, stopping you from walking away, “Sit down, worry about cleaning this place later, you deserve some rest.” He said as he gave the other coffee to you, “That's for you, no need to be shy or embarrassed, Y/N.” He chuckled, “You're too kind for me Johnny.” You said as you hesitate to take the coffee, you sat down with him, “Thank you, Really..” “Not a problem Y/N.” He said smiling at you, “I'll tell you what, after we finish this, I'll help you clean, how's that?” He said, giving you a cocky grin, “What- that's I'll get fired if you do that-” “Don't sweat it, love. I'll take care of it if that ever happens.” He winked at you as he sipped his drink, “Damn, You make a good coffee, a perfect one.” you blushed from his words, you tried to hide your face, “I- thank you- Thank you Johnny I appreciate that.” You said smiling then you took a sip from your coffee, the warm coffee makes you shiver a bit.

You two talked for a while, laughed and teased each other, you asked about how Johnny's life is, and he does the same, you noticed how handsome he is, the way he makes flirty comments about you that leaving you blushing and smiling like a kid, the way his big brown eyes look at you, You're starting to like him, But you know that He's an actor, a famous one, You're afraid that he might not like you back.

“I should clean up, it's getting really late and it's also snowing. I didn't bring any sweater with me-” you were about to stand up but he stopped you again, “You're forgetting that I told you that I'm helping you, right?” “oh- yeah right, sorry” You chuckled, “Ok, let's go?” He said as he stood up with you, “I'll clean up here. Can you clean up the dishes if there's any?” He said as he Removes his black coat, revealing his veiny hands that goes all the way up to his biceps that's been covered by the sleeve of his clothes, “Never mind that, I'll help you with everything-” he said grabbing your hand and going to the kitchen to clean up.

He washed the remaining dishes as you help to dry it, after that he mopped the floors as you arrange everything in the shelves, with that a few cleanings later, you and Johnny rest up at the table.

“Whew, that was fun-” he chuckled looking at you, “You ok, Y/N?” He asked as he saw you yawning, “Yeah- I'm just really tired..” you rubbed your eyes, “We should go” you managed to smile at him, “I'll drop you off, it's freezing out there, you'll catch a cold.” “Ok- I'll get my stuff, you can wait outside” you smiled at him, “Ok,” You went to grab your things and change clothes, you retouch your makeup and sprayed some perfume on.

You went outside as you got done, seeing Johnny leaning back against his sports car, “Jeez, Y/N-” he said as he removed his coat, “Here put this on, you'll freeze-” he said chuckling helping you to put his coat on, “You can stay in my place tonight, the snow is to annoying to deal with-” he said opening the passenger seat for you, “If that's ok?” He looked at you, “Yeah- i- that's ok.” “Perfect.” He said as you went inside, closing the door for you, he went to the other side of the car and opened the door to get it, “You alright?” He asked, looking at you in concern, “Yeah, I'm ok- just a little cold..” “ok hang on-” he said as he grabbed a sweater from the back of the car, “Wear this then the coat, if you're still cold I'll turn the car heater on” You took the sweater at him and he helps you wear the sweater, you shivered as you felt warm enough, “Thank you, Johnny I feel better now- Really you've done so much for me-” he cuts you off with a kiss, a sincere and gentle kiss, he pulls away looking directly in to your eyes, “Sometimes you need to accept the fact that I like you and that I'm happy to help you-” he chuckled when he saw you blushing, “Johnny- wha- what's that for?!” You blushed, Johnny grins, “A kiss to keep you more warm?” He teased, “Can I just be honest, Y/N?” “What is it?” He sighs, “I know we just met like a few hours ago and I probably don't know if you like me back or wh-” “I like you too-” You almost shouted, “What?” Johnny's eyes widened, “I said I like you too..well I don't know- it's just when I saw you being kind to me and all flirty I just found you so different, you're not like the other guys I've met nor dated you know? It's just you'll get it!” You felt so embarrassed as you said those words feeling like you're going to explode, he held your hands, “Hey, it's ok, Y/N I understand that's this is all of a sudden, we just met and- I'm just willing to take everything slow and just like how you wanted it.” He assured you by rubbing your hands with his thumb, “Johnny-” “I know love, it's ok.” he smiled at you and you smiled back to him, “So am I your girlfriend right now or-” “Your decision love, I'll serenade you if that's what it takes-” he chuckled, “if that's what you want.” you smiled at him as he started the car and drives away going to his place.

Im a little iffy with the design but it's simple enough for me to draw repeatedly.

Also extra drawings I did, i keep tryna get a rough idea of how kuai and hanzo will interact for the first few times. (Working on the lore as we speak, I hope I'll have the motivation to make this into an actual fanfic once I'm done:>)

This is after one of the races is busted by police, everyone is booking it in their cars and kuai is running for whatever reason (car pooped out or his car is the one being chased so he left it behind somewhere?? Idk yet) and hanzo despite for the first few times displaying a dislike for kuai he wasn't that mean to leave him behind.
