vedic astrology observations pt 2
in my previous post i had briefly talked about how moon influence, cancer rashi, jupiter influence tend to give the natives a large chest and make them very curvy. ill expand more on that here:
Tumblr media
Pushya (cancer rashi) stellium (sun, rising and venus) Selena Gomez is known for her generous curves
Tumblr media
Hasta sun, Pushya moon + mars native Monica Bellucci is known for her luscious curves
Tumblr media
Punarvasu sun & moon, Sofia Vergara is blessed with a big bosom
Tumblr media
Vishaka moon, Pushya mars & rahu, Hasta jupiter & saturn Beyonce made it cool to be curvy back in the day
Tumblr media
Punarvasu moon, Penelope Cruz
Tumblr media
Punarvasu moon, Mariah Carey
Tumblr media
Purvabhadrapada sun & mercury, Alexandra Daddario
Tumblr media
Milana Vayntrub, Purvabhadrapada sun & rising
2. Serpent Yoni is present in the charts of most seductresses/femme fatales/sex symbols. Nakshatras associated with snakes, like Ashlesha, Rahuvian nakshatras (rahu is linked to serpent), UBP etc are also commonly found in the charts of many sirens 🐍
Tumblr media
Rohini sun, Angelina Jolie. Her atmakaraka is her mercury in mrigashira
Tumblr media
Mrigashira moon, Jennifer Lawrence (she also has Ashlesha sun)
Tumblr media
Natalie Portman, mrigashira sun
Tumblr media
Megan Fox, venus in mrigashira atmakaraka (moon in ashlesha)
Tumblr media
Margot Robbie, swati moon (rahu is associated with snakes) and has venus in rohini
Tumblr media
Parveen Babi, Mrigashira moon
Tumblr media
Urmila Matondkar, saturn and ketu in Mrigashira
Tumblr media
Sridevi, ashlesha stellium (sun, rising and venus)
Tumblr media
Mila Kunis, sun in ashlesha, moon in swati
Tumblr media
Marilyn Monroe, sun & mercury in rohini
Tumblr media
Pola Negri, a silent era sex symbol, rohini mars and ketu in ashlesha
Tumblr media
Theda Bara, the first ever sex symbol had UBP rising
Tumblr media
Clara Bow, the woman because of whom the term "it girl" was coined, had venus in mrigashira atmakaraka
Snakes have long been associated with mysticism, hypnotism and evil. A seductive woman can put anyone into a trance and make them lose their mind and forget the reality they inhabit, similar to how a snake charmer can make a snake twist and turn according to their will by playing certain tunes, a highly magnetic woman can get anything she wants by channelling her inner serpent.
3. Homewreckers, Mistresses and Concubines
Tumblr media
Camilla Parker Bowles is probably one of the most famous mistresses in the modern era. She has Punarvasu sun & mercury and is Pushya rising
Tumblr media
Monica Lewinsky has Pushya sun & Punarvasu mercury
Tumblr media
Angelina Jolie has Pushya venus & rising, along with Saturn in Punarvasu amatyakaraka
Tumblr media
for those of you who don't know, Ben Affleck cheated on JLo with Jennifer Garner and then married her. JGarner has Ketu in Pushya whereas JLo is a Pushya moon
Tumblr media
Tom Brady left his pregnant wife to marry Gisele Bundchen, who has Pushya sun and Punarvasu mercury
Tumblr media
Blake Shelton was still married to Miranda Lambert when he started seeing Gwen Stefani who has Punarvasu moon
Tumblr media
Madhuri Dixit, in perhaps her most iconic role, plays a courtesan named Chandramukhi in the movie Devdas. She has Pushya moon conjunct Jupiter
Tumblr media
its pretty well known that Priyanka Chopra had an affair with the much married Shah Rukh Khan (not the first time she was accused of being a mistress) PC is Punarvasu sun & mercury
Tumblr media
Marlene Dietrich who was best known for playing femme fatale- esque, mistress-y roles had Pushya moon
I was very surprised to find Punarvasu and Pushya nakshatras crop up so often as they're often considered to be the "goody good girls" but perhaps this is what makes them so desirable to men, so much so that they're ready to wreck and ruin their lives, careers and marriages to chase these women. I had mentioned in another post about how since Cancer is the most feminine sign, women with these placements are often considered the ideal wife/gf and I suppose this is the shadow side to that. Desirability is a double edged sword and must be wielded carefully. obviously i dont condone cheating nor am i making it sound like a positive thing but i thought it was an interesting recurring pattern nonetheless!!

PROMISE
All Cove wants is to see you happy, and all Baxter wants is to reassure him that he was going to do exactly that.
a/n; takes place some time during step 4 when your friends throw you another surprise party and you're off talking to someone else. i just think the two most important men in mc's life should interact a little more. implied step 3 ending on a bad note.
Tumblr media
The twinkle of the fairy lights that hang from every wall of the first floor is mesmerizing. It's simple decoration, easy to put up, easy to get down, but beautiful all the same. The soft glow it emits puts Baxter at ease; even more so when accompanied by the sight of your smiling face.
His heart skips a beat when you glance over in his direction, your eyes meeting for the briefest moments. You discreetly wave at him, trying your best to not interrupt whatever story Terry is going on about, and he gives you a wave of his own back. He doesn't even try to fight the smile that tugs at his lips.
It was such a straightforward interaction, one that lasted all but three seconds, but just that was enough for him to feel the butterflies in his stomach lurch into a frenzy.
He's so enthralled by you, in fact, that he doesn't even notice the sound of someone making their way closer to him until they're already speaking.
"Uhm, how... how are you enjoying the party?" It's an expected question coming from an unexpected source.
Baxter turns to face the new presence by his side, more than a little surprised. Out of all the people here, Cove Holden would be the last person he expected to initiate a conversation, but the appearance isn't unwelcomed. Far from it.
"It's been fun," he says with full sincerity.
Despite the sparse decorations and only handful of people here, Baxter would say with his full heart that this is the best party he's ever been to. Surrounded by people who really care for him, those who took the time out of their day to surprise him even after all the stunts he's pulled. "Thank you for your part in this. I deeply appreciate it."
"Oh," Cove sputters, apparently flustered by the earnestness. "It's no problem. I'm... glad you're enjoying yourself."
Baxter smiles knowingly, "is there something on your mind?"
The taller male doesn't answer, but he fixes his gaze on a particular person across the room, still intently listening to Terry's story. Miranda and Xavier have joined them by this point.
'Ah.' his expression softens. "Are you worried about them?"
"Of course I am," he replies. Any hesitation in his voice from before lost within those four words. His hands clench and loosen by his sides a few times and he glances down at his feet, as if debating whether or not it was okay to say the next words.
You had forgiven Baxter a long time ago, that was a fact, but Cove couldn't forget your dejected expression or how many false smiles you wore to assure everyone you weren't hurt that summer.
Baxter waits quietly. He doesn't know exactly what your best friend intends to say, but from his fidgeting alone, he could garner a guess. Eventually though, he does break the silence. "I won't hurt them."
Cove looks over to your boyfriend, unable to keep the doubt from his expression. He trusts you, he wants you to be happy, that's all he ever wants for you; but that's even more of a reason for him to be wary. Baxter had broken your heart once, and he never wants to see that happen again.
"Can you promise that?"
There's a pause, and then a shake of a head from the black color haired man and Cove feels his heart nearly sink. "I'm not like you. I haven't known them my entire life. I'm just someone who showed up to the doorstep of your neighborhood one summer and then left."
There's a gleam in his brown eyes that make them seem to sparkle even more than the lights decorated around the room. "We'll have arguments, we'll get into fights," his voice lowers, "but I hope I can learn from those mistakes. That I'll make a better decision the next time." He turns to face Cove. "I can promise that."
Cove swallows the lump in his throat. He had come here to talk to Baxter, but in the end he ended up not being able to say anything at all. Though, maybe that was okay too. Whatever the lead up was, he heard what he needed to hear.
"Thank you," he says.
Baxter's face lights up at those words, eyes widening with boyish glee, before reverting back to his more well-known smirk. "No, thank you for coming over and chatting with me. I'm thankful we got to have this time together."
"Aha," Cove chuckles awkwardly now that the air has cleared. "But uh, Baxter?" He calls, wanting to get just one last word in.
"Yes?"
"You... should take care of yourself, too." And with that final statement, he steps forward to join your group.
Baxter blinks once.
He takes a moment to reign in his shock. Did Cove Holden of all people just give him some encouragement? He chuckles, straightening up as he spots you splitting from the circle to make your way over to his side.
This week has been full of surprises.

i am bone fucking tired so this might be jumbled
thinking about donna and miranda being mirrors and how dear donna would be absolutely fucking terrifying if she went to the same lengths as miranda does to get what she wanrs. imagining a donna so obsessessive in her love for mc and so afraid of her being stolen away that she doesn't even hesitate to garner complete control over her life. she wants to know everything mc is doing, who she's taking to, where she goes in a day, her daily activities and favourite things, all so she can carefully watch over and do everything in her power to ensure mc stays loving her, stays WITH her. of course, eventually just stalking isn't enough, too many people are a little too friendly with mc, too close to stealing her away for themselves. donna starts sending fun little presents to these people until they leave mc alone :o) mc belongs solely to donna after every attempt at new friendships ends abruptly, yet still the botanist isn't satisfied. mc expresses genuien love for donna, but sge says it's a bit lonely not having any other friends. but why would she need anyone else? isn't donna enough? desperate times call for desperate measures, and donna is as desperate as it fuckjng gets. she starts putting something extea in mc's tea. not enough to kill her, that's the LAST thing she wabts! no, just enough of something toxic to keep her home. keep her in sight. keep her safe. with donna. only donna :o)

𓏲  *   ⸺   pictures of narisa fah narong,  the  thirty-three  year  old  heiress & vogue editor-in-chief,  have been showing up all over my feed, and considering the last time they were #trending, it was due to a former employee claiming that the editor is more like a real life miranda priestly than her image suggests — i’m not likely to unfollow anytime soon. with their custom designed chanel dress , towering stilettos , and flawless make-up with her signature pink lip, they’ve managed to garner a reputation for being more vivacious than obstinate. their critics say that they’re more critical than ingenious when they aren’t too busy focusing on their stilettos clicking against the marble floor , announcing your arrival and calling all to attention before you enter the room ; how honey and wildfire are both the color gold , and a flower's thorns do not negate its sweetness ; eyes constantly fixated on the top of the next mountain to be climbed as she builds her empire ; smiles that blossom after leaving the office behind , liquid sunshine rushing to refill your veins ; one day your name will be beside the goddesses no one could ever fully understand. reputation.com has taken to calling them the people's princess in order to avoid a lawsuit ( again ).
Tumblr media
basic information.
full name: narisa fah narong. nickname(s): risa , riri ( close friends only ). age: thirty-three. date of birth: august 19th. birthplace: bangkok , thailand. astrological sign: leo. gender & pronouns: cis woman , she / her. orientation: biromantic , bisexual. languages: thai , english , french , italian , mandarin , korean , some german & russian. occupation: heiress of the narong group , a multinational conglomerate in the hospitality and travel industries. socialite. editor-in-chief of vogue.
personality.
positive: vivacious ,  ingenious ,  sociable , ambitious ,  eloquent , confident , captivating. negative: critical ,  obstinate ,  perfectionist , blunt , impatient , dogmatic. moral alignment: neutral good. temperament: sanguine. mbti: estp - the entrepreneur. enneagram: 3w2 , the enchanter.
family ties.
father: somchai narong , ceo & chairman of the narong group. mother: esme thomas , french actress & model. siblings: three half-siblings - two from her father's second marriage , one from his third marriage. family financial status: high upper class. pets: teddy , a male cavapoo , and gigi , a female pomeranian.
the narong name first made its mark all the way back in the 1870s when the family built one of the first luxury hotels in thailand. what began as a single magnificent hotel soon expanded not only in numbers but in reach; the narongs established equally as magnificent hotels across asia, and as more years passed, they expanded in europe and then north america. anyone who was anyone stayed at the barong hotels, and the hefty price tag kept hotel doors closed to nobodies, allowing the family to not only grow their wealth but also their connections, rubbing elbows with influential figures from politicians to prominent businessmen to celebrities from all across the globe. in the past fifty years, the empire extended into the tourism world, offering luxury travel experiences to all areas of the world and most recently, acquiring and launching their own cruise line.
by the time narisa was born, the family was practically considered royalty without a crown. a staple in high society with a polished reputation, particularly in thanks to their many charitable works. narisa was the eldest of the next generation of narongs, the unofficial future crown princess once her father took over the keys to the kingdom. growing up, she wanted for nothing. not even the divorce of her parents ( love burning out as quickly as it'd blossomed ) altered her way of life - all that changed was now her summers were spent in paris, her mother's home, rather than whatever city her father was currently staying in.
initially there was no denying that narisa was her father's favorite child, his pride and joy, but then a change occurred. expectations began rising higher and higher. suddenly her father began wondering if tradition should truly be upheld - why shouldn't the company go to the best suited? he'd muse, the implication that it might not be the eldest never directly spoken but clearly implied, particularly as similar expectation were being placed on risa's half-sibling. so narisa worked harder. she pushed herself to be better, to shine brighter, to never misstep. she worked tirelessly to balance her school grades with getting involved in the family business and building her own public reputation so there could be no question that she w as the right person to be the next ceo of the narong group.
narisa's time living in paris with her mother also inspired a love for fashion. her mother tried getting her into modeling but walking the runway was never risa's cup of tea. she was far more interested in studying the designs and reading the latest fashion magazine, recognizing the artistry in both. her mother's connections enabled her to get an internship at a elle magazine in paris. it was there that she saw an fashion editor at work, and her aspiration was set in stone.
fashion wasn't a back-up plan. when a few interviewers asked that, she had shaken her head with a smile and soft laugh. what better way to prove to her father that she was deserving of being the heiress than proving herself in another industry? besides, she was narisa narong, if anyone could rule two kingdoms it was her.
she used her mother's connections to land a role as an editor at vogue france straight out of college but quickly put her own money where her nepotism perks were. she worked tirelessly to deliver the best work, often restarting or even discarding entire projects if it no longer met her standards, and constantly searching for ways to improve the magazine. promotions were quickly granted; success motivated her more. it was during her time as managing editor in paris that the initial seeds of her contradictory demeanor were planted. anyone who met narisa outside fo work would be greeted by a jovial, charming young woman, leaving no question as to how she'd become beloved by the public . . . so why did some people who worked for her whisper about a strict, overbearing boss who accepted nothing short of perfection?
the whispers, initially limited to remaining within company walls, might've quieted if they didn't follow her to new york when she became managing editor there. two years later, when she became editor-in-chief, they grew louder. but it didn't impact narisa's continued success. her work and leadership at vogue was met with high praise, numerous people recognizing her keen eye and passion, and many of her ideas credited with giving the magazine a fresh feel, ensuring it kept up with changing trends and setting new ones.
a year before becoming editor-in-chief, at her thirtieth birthday celebration, her father announced that he'd finally made his decision, and narisa was officially declared the family's heiress, ending the near two decade long speculation. the news was released to the media the next day. since then, risa balanced her work at vogue with taking a larger, active role at the narong group, primarily at their new york headquarters helping oversee their north and south american properties, proving that she could not only handle but succeed at both. one day she would fill her father's shoes but until he was ready to step back, which seemed a longtime away, she continued living her life as she had all along.
headcanons.
narisa at work and narisa away from work are two very different people. the perfectionism her father instilled in her through his endlessly rising expectations and criticizing even the smallest mistakes causes her to expect that from not only herself but those around her at work. she has little tolerance for her standards not being met and won't hesitate to correct her employees or voice her discontent. failure, in her eyes, isn't an option. but if someone succeeds, she won't hesitate to commend them. away from the office, she truly comes alive, revealing a more cheerful and jovial young woman with a big heart who loves to have fun, hang out with friends, and relishes in the spotlight.
initially, her work demeanor was contained in the fashion industry but recently reports have slipped into the wider public sphere. making some question if the image she portrays to the public is sincere.
due to the narong family's prominence, risa has been in the spotlight for as long as she can remember, attending functions with her family while growing up and eventually being invited to high society events on her own. she loves making public appearances. if there's an event or party, risa is sure to make an appearance.
utterly adored by the public - one would almost think she is royalty. it was the media who first called her "princess narong" and the monikor has stuck every since.
suffice to say her social media following is massive, and risa is very active on it. also has a social media account for her two dogs.
more than a little vain. she refuses to step outside the house if even a hair is out of place. is constantly dressed up. she'll wear more casual clothes at home but the minute she steps out into public, she'd dressed fashionably.
the narong family prides themselves on their mostly positive image so narisa is fairly image conscious. in her eyes, bad press is indeed bad. thus, she can be selective with who she allows in her circle of friends
home life wasn't always the most peaceful while she was growing up. her parents divorced when she was too young to remember any of the fights, but she was there to witness the downfall of her father's second and third marriages. her father wasn't the perfect husband or father by any means. never violent or unfaithful, but very strict and unforgiving. the narong patriarch has, thankfully in risa's eyes, remained single since his third divorce despite dating around.
despite that, narisa still admires her father. hasn't fully accepted that the competition he encouraged between her and her half-sibling wasn't right and instead believes it was done to make her stronger, which. in her eyes, it did.
part of the reason her reputation has remained so positive is her continued dedication to partaking in charitable works. she's genuinely passionate about making a difference in the world by helping people through the narong group's charitable wing. and if the press notices well, there's nothing wrong about that.

Hamilton Manila 2023!
As a musical theatre girlie who lives far away from the capital city, it's a bit hard to catch artists and musicals when they tour in my country. It can also be quite expensive since I have to pay for my flight and book Airbnbs. But when Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that Hamilton would have its Asian premiere in the Philippines early this year, I promised myself I would not throw away my shot.
I first discovered this musical in the summer of 2016, probably a month before it garnered big awards — including Best Musical! — at the Tonys. Having only heard of Breathe from LMM's other show, In The Heights, back then, I was surprised to hear rap and hip-hop in a Broadway musical. Nevertheless, I was hooked! Every song was catchy, and the lyrics were smart and informative. Satisfied and Helpless became my favorite songs, with It's Quiet Uptown making me cry whenever I hear the four words: "Forgiveness, can you imagine?"
After watching The Phantom of the Opera back in March 2019, I was so excited to go back to Solaire and watch another musical. This time, I was able to enjoy my second theatre experience with my college friends. It seems very fitting that I get to share this moment with them. Back in college, we used to sing songs from Hamilton during breaks and enact the dance from The Schuyler Sisters. We even made a parody of the song Alexander Hamilton when making a presentation about Confucius for our Asian Civilization class!
While Solaire didn't have many different backdrops for photo ops for Hamilton like they did for POTO, my friends and I were still able to take cute pictures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a partnership with UnionBank, they also offer free holographic souvenir cards for the first 140 people (150 on the weekends, iirc), so coming to the theatre four hours earlier is definitely worth it! Here's my card with my friends:
Tumblr media
My friends and I also enjoyed complimentary drinks from Solaire since it was our first time signing up for Solaire Rewards. Don't throw away your shot for free drinks!
Okay, now for the show itself! Although most of my friends were hoping to watch the show in the orchestra seats, we ended up on the balcony. After a while, I realized that Hamilton is certainly best viewed on the balcony since we're able to see the rotating stage more clearly, as well as the incredible choreography and lighting design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the main cast we saw on October 31:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like most Filipinos, I was hoping to see Rachelle Ann Go as Eliza. "Pinoy Pride" is something of a cheesy inside joke in our country, but hell, I'm so happy to see Rachelle thriving in West End productions, from Les Misérables to Hamilton. Seeing her portray Eliza live was one for the books. She was playful and giddy in Helpless, but she completely broke everyone's heart during Burn. And not to mention, her voice! Her singing highlights include Burn and the last part of Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story. She also shared wonderful chemistry with Callan Purcell, who played Hamilton in this production.
I was so looking forward to seeing Jason Arrow as Hamilton, but I still liked Callan's performance, even if his interpretation was completely different from other Hamiltons I've seen in slime tutorials. I especially liked him the best in Act 1. His "mature" Hamilton may not be that convincing at times in Act 2, but his energy was so infectious as the "ambitious" young Hamilton in the first half.
Another surprise was Kirrah Amosa's Angelica. I've read some comments in the Pinoy Hamilton FB group about her "lacking" portrayal of Angelica, but you know what? I thought she was great! Yes, she's giving more of an "empathetic Eliza" energy instead of the "fierce Angelica" we usually see, but that's what made her performance of Satisfied even more impactful to me. As for the third Schuyler sister, Peggy/Maria Reynolds, Elandrah Eramiha has a honey-like voice, which she completely showed off during Say No To This.
As a Burr apologist, I'm torn with Winston Hillyer's portrayal of Burr. Eliza's my overall favorite character in the show, but for me, Burr is the most relatable and grounded. I wasn't completely disappointed with his performance, but I just didn't think his character was able to "grow" in the second half. He has a very wonderful, crystal-clear voice, though!
Darnell Abraham as George Washington was also a main highlight of the show! Maybe it's because of his rich baritone voice, but I loved his father-son relationship with Callan. His Washington was thoughtful and deeply caring. (And dare I say I like him more than Chris Jackson from the OBC?)
Brent Hill was hilarious as King George, but I can't help comparing his performance with Jonathan Groff's. They both have brilliant comedic timing, but Jonathan's a much more menacing King George, whereas Brent is sassier and maybe even crazier!
Meanwhile, Hamilton's comrades: Marcus John and Trey Curtis, who played Lafayette/Jefferson and Mulligan/Madison respectively, also had so much chemistry with each other and stole the show so many times! Marcus reminded me so much of Daveed Diggs' little quirks in the show, but he was still great in his own way. I've read somewhere that Trey is also a standby for Hamilton and that he's amazing. Sigh... What I'd do to watch the show again and catch him as Hamilton! Julian Kuo was also very sweet as Laurens/Philip Hamilton, which made his death scenes twice as heartbreaking as usual.
Overall, I'm very much satisfied with this Hamilton cast!
Tumblr media
Of course, Hamilton will not be complete without merch! Just like last time, I bought a boat tote bag because, like other Gen-Z kids, I'm obsessed with tote bags. We just can't help it! I also bought a lapel pin, so I can pin it to my other tote bags. I initially wanted to buy the button pin set, but unfortunately, it was sold out. I'm still pretty happy with my purchases, though!
Tumblr media
Four days later, I'm back at home, and I still have post-show blues. I just listen to the OBC recording and the mixtape to keep me company. Maybe I'll rewatch the Disney+ pro-shot again!
Watching Hamilton was a dream come true and an experience I'll never forget anytime soon. I can't wait to watch my next musical again!

~Raza~
Classification: Mammal
Place of Origin: Miarilia, Lyrae System
In respects to basic skeletal structure and limbs, Raza resemble Terrans the most. Like the Terran species, they possess five fingers and toes, with a vertical spine that leads to a single head. On their foreheads are two horn-like antennas that can be semi-controlled by the individual. Along with this are four egg-shaped markings that rest in the middle of their forehead, with the fourth on the bridge of their nose between their eyes. Unlike the various skin tones of the race, this gem-like feature is always a shade of light blue. Another bodily difference is the length of their ears. Shooting straight up, their ears can be anywhere from 8 to 12 inches, with a few outliers that are not uncommon.
The Raza are one of the only species known to have dual-skin tones, their interior colors range in shades of green, blue, purple, red, and brown. While exterior tones rest along the forehead, arms, and legs, an assortment of colors has been observed besides brown, black, white, and grey. These colors are hereditary, with the chances of acquiring the father's gene at 75%. Eye color is similar, existing in many colors and allowing the Raza the ranking of being one of the most colorful species in the galaxy.
Raza are unique in their ability to copy and replicate other species' physiology. Through their antenna, in a practice known as 'tmü̃t' or to outsiders as 'touching,' Raza retain a copy of a species and mimic the DNA of other species to virtually assimilate themselves into another culture with hardly any trouble.
Existing under an authoritarian government, led by a single individual known as a Prime. Raza are divided into a four-tier (five if one counts the Caste-less) caste system. Individuals are not born in a caste but are assigned around the age of ten. Once given a caste, it is impossible for an individual to leave it. The Caste-less, Raza born outside the government oversight that assigns such castes, are shunned and automatically enter into a caste that awards them no rights in the eyes of the government. They are extremely hostile to Caste-less and view them as lower than dirt and trash even if the individual Raza holds a rank that garners respect. Caste-less are obvious due to the lack of markings on their face.
The average lifespan of the Raza is 80 years. Though this may differ with Touched Raza.

Okay, so, about “The Sandman”...
It’s amazing. They pulled off a really elegant adaptation, based on the fact that I cannot point to either the comics or the series and say one was better than the other. Plots were tightened up. Characters got shifted here and there. They did the wise thing, in my opinion, and removed just about every reference to the DC superheroes other than a pair of name-checks. By allowing characters to be played by actors regardless of race or gender, they ended up with a cast that did a stellar job. Where there was classic bloody gore/horror, they surrounded it with intense psychological horror so that even those of us who are the type to look away from the screen got almost the full impact. And they took full advantage of the medium to produce incredibly rich and lush visuals and bring iconic pages in the comics to life.
As I said last night, if you feared what a live-action version would do to a story you treasure, don’t be afraid. And if you’re hesitant to watch a series without having read the source material, don’t hesitate. This feels like the once-in-a-generation event where the adaptation not only lives up to the original, but can stand beside it as an equal.
Spoilery thoughts under the cut for both the series and the comics.
I am still really astonished at just how deft an adaptation the series it. Every time I went, “Wait a minute, I don’t like this change,” by the end of that episode or the next I was sold. For example, I was missing Miranda, Rose’s mother, at the beginning of Episode 7, as the buffer between Rose and Unity and also because we were shown the circumstances of their separation from Jed and not just told. But when Gault took on Miranda’s appearance and then railed against Dream because she didn’t want to be a nightmare anymore, it made perfect sense.
And Gault herself was a revelation. In the comics we have a team called Brute and Glob, a rather dumb pair of nightmares, trying to make their own little Dreaming in Jed’s mind. (And if I remember correctly, they’re a reference to one of DC’s older horror comic titles.) They are the ones who capture Hector Hall at his death and bring Lyta to live with him in their fledgling kingdom, and Hector is the “Sandman” of Jed’s dream world. It works in the comics because the text and art pay homage to an early 20th-century comic strip called “Little Nemo”. But it would have been extremely hard to do that on screen without losing the viewers, so they made Jed the star of his dreams instead and gave him all the hokey superhero trappings. And that works because Jed is a kid, with a kid’s imagination. But it gets even better when we see that Gault’s motivations weren’t about power, but about protecting Jed from his abusers because she had changed and wanted to be free of the limitations of her origins. It hit me a little later--it’s such an elegant metaphor for those who are constricted by society because of their race or sexuality, constantly fighting the huge obstacles wanting to prevent such people from any kind of metamorphosis (I mean, Dream gave her butterfly wings when he recreated her as she wanted to be). Which leads me to the one giant tonal shift that has me curious about future seasons. Dream in the comics is almost completely without humor. He is ultra-serious about his duties and responsibilities and way too proud, unwilling to change as the aeons go by. And his inability to change leads him to his end in a classic literary tragedy - even though he knows change will be necessary, he resists and even plans for his demise by setting up for the possibility with Lyta’s child as his successor. But it’s really hard to get a TV series off the ground when your leading man is not just the aloof emo archetype but stoic and stern to the point of needing to be introduced as a prisoner to garner sympathy for him. My husband and I were genuinely surprised in the first episode when Dream cried over Jessamy’s death, because it signaled a depth of caring that we don’t see until much later in the comics. But the TV Dream does show emotion, albeit mostly quietly and with a lot of amazing face acting by Tom Sturridge, does appreciate humor and irony, and at the end of this season does seem to see the need for change.
So now I’m very curious as to how they will herd Dream to his death. Will there be a back-and-forth because Dream can’t change enough? Or will the undertone about the universe having rules mean that Dream’s arc will be less about tragic choices and more about circumstances, with him having to accept the consequences of spilling family blood when he gives Orpheus the coup?
(Of course this is assuming that Netflix allows the series to be completed instead of cutting it off after 2-3 seasons. Yes, I’m still bitter about Sense8.)
TL;DR - I loved it, I think Neil Gaiman has taken full advantage of his previous TV experiences to find what works and find who will work best with him, and I will re-watch this series many times and keep watching any future seasons.

You stare at the images displayed on the laptop before you and scribble down important points in your notebook as Professor Shade discusses the lecture he did earlier that day. With the failing mark you got on your quiz last week, he’s offered to tutor you in private, opting for a more hands-on approach for you to better absorb the lessons instead of struggling in a room with other students.
You’re on a scholarship and another failing mark would see to it that you’d lose it. And you can’t, for the scholarship was more than a means to get into a university that you cannot afford, but more of an escape from the abusive home you’ve come to know; your father’s drunken rage and strong hand along with your mother’s eyes full of regret for even bringing you into this world.
You can’t go back. You never want to. So, you took his offer for one-on-one lectures, thinking that this would be what’s best for you.
But god, you’re terribly wrong.
You try your best to focus on what Professor Shade is saying, trying your best in listening to his thorough explanation about the Trojan War as his smooth voice reverberates against his office walls.
But you can’t find it in you to focus, your eyes darting down at your notes and then up at him, only for it to be taken by his strong forearms, bare with his sleeves rolled up. His tie is gone as well and the top two buttons of his powder blue shirt are undone and his blond hair is slightly unruly and falling over his eyes, that’s framed with his glasses, as he repeatedly runs his fingers through them while continuing with his lesson.
You know Professor Shade to be an attractive man. You’re not blind and neither are your classmates. How they openly gush over him when he enters the lecture hall and once hearing Miranda saying something about wanting to wake up to the sound of his voice. They would even purposely make a ruckus that would prompt Professor Shade to call their attention, the group of girls swooning at the action instead of getting flustered like how you would.
You don’t doubt that he’s got an array of admirers, students, and faculty alike. That there must be some invisible line to garner his attention that you never found yourself in.
Until now.
“Are you still with me?” Professor Shade comes up close and you blink away your thoughts, leaning back to look up at him. But you regret doing so almost instantly as the light of his office cascades down on him, accentuating his chiseled jaw and his stubble.
He asks his question once more and you nod in response, looking down in embarrassment for staring. A frown then forms on your lips when you see your notes far behind the slide on the screen. You trailed off and it’s because you can’t keep your focus intact.
“Maybe it’s time for a break.” He announces and walks over to his desk, a sigh leaving your lips as you place your notebook down on the low table in front of you. “Any preference?” He asks from your side.
“Water is fine. Thank you.” You mumble as you glance at him then look back down at your hands.
You must have looked like a complete idiot in front of him for spacing out because all that’s running through your head is how handsome he looks. He must think that he’s wasting his time staying after office hours just to teach you when you’re not even listening.
You hear some glasses clinking at your side and you glance up to see him pour water into a blue mug and some hot water from his electric kettle in a yellow one. The rip of a paper fills your ears and you watch him dunk the tea bag in one before taking both mugs and walking back to you on the couch.
“Was I going too fast?” He asks, giving you your water before placing his tea on the table and taking a seat beside you. An unexpected wave of disappointment washes over you when he keeps a good distance from where you’re seated. “You know you can tell me if I am. This whole arrangement is to cater to your needs.”
“I know, professor.” You mutter and take a welcome sip of your drink, the cool liquid drenching your seemingly parched throat. “I guess I just feel a bit overwhelmed about this.” You confess as the anxiety you feel over the whole ordeal finally sinks in.
What would your classmates think if they found out that you and the history professor have this arrangement? What would they even say? You can already imagine them looking at you with judgment, could already hear the lies they would concoct between the two of you because of your inability to pass and his willingness to help. And worst of all, you don’t even want to think how it would impact him and his career if such falsity reached the faculty or the dean.
No! You cannot put his job on the line! He may be doing such as an act of kindness but you know the world, especially the students, to be brutal. Scholarship or not, it would be unfair to him.
“I think this is wrong.” You blurt out. And the way Professor Shade looks at you, eyes laced with worry and brows knitted in concern, makes you want to retract your words.
“Why? Is it not helping?” He asks and you can sense the sadness that surrounds him. “Are my teaching methods ineffective or would you like us to try something else?”
“I just—I’m worried.”
“About?” He prompts.
“What would the other students say if they found out you’re giving me this..this special treatment?” You question, your spunk taking you by surprise. “No offense, sir,” You clear your throat before pushing on. “But I don’t even understand why you’re wasting your time on me. I failed your test, shouldn’t you be angry or have me do some extra credit work?” You’re rambling, your anxiety level and your emotions piqued and you can’t find it in you to stop. “And if the other students see, they’ll take and say you’re playing favorites and—”
“So, what if I am?” You blink in surprise at his question, eyes wide as you look at him, your string of words gone.
“I’m sorry. What?” You ask in disbelief.
He chuckles as he leans back against the couch. “What if I’m playing favorites? What does it matter to them?”
“I—” You’re flustered by his admission. Is he really doing such a thing? You dare not ask but are you his favorite among the lot of students in his class? You feel a shyness run up your spine that makes you fold yourself small on the couch, looking down at the mug of water clasped in your hands. “Then that’s—t-that’s unfair to them, isn’t it?” You stutter.
“How so? How is it unfair for a teacher to help a struggling student?” His question comes a little strong but you sense no hostility from him. He pushes. “What’s unfair is if I don’t give you a chance to pass my class and you don’t give me a chance to help you.” You feel the couch dip from his weight and startle when he takes the mug from you, setting it beside his. You look up at him in surprise when he wraps his fingers around your hand after. “You are on a scholarship, yes?”
You don’t know how he knows that but you nod nonetheless.
“And maintaining a certain grade will help you keep the status?”
You nod once again.
“I want to help you keep it. To help you finish university with your scholarship intact.” He thrums, feeling your cheeks heat up when his thumb gently caresses your knuckles. “But you seem hesitant for me to do so. Why?”
You sigh. “People talk.” It’s all you can say because it’s simply the truth.
No one ever wants to be found in the center of a scandal. It was already proven to be something dreadful after that one girl freshman got into one with the engineering professor.
“You’re worried people would gossip?”
Another nod.
He hums at your response and you look down once more at your joined hands. You notice how big his is, how it almost swallows yours whole.  But most of all, you somehow feel a sense of safety in his hold, in his presence overall. That your thoughts and worries seem frivolous when he’s around.
But you shake your head. That’s the crush talking. The crush pushing you towards him and making you decide to keep the arrangement. To not think of the ‘what ifs’ and ‘buts’, instead having you relish on the fact that he’s given you his time and effort to see that you’re taken cared of, that your education doesn’t perish.
“If the arrangement makes you uncomfortable,” he starts. “We can try different methods. Video calls perhaps? Or meet at the library?” He suggests. “That would be more public and there are study rooms that would give us enough privacy.”
He still wants to pull through even after you’ve given him several good reasons why he shouldn’t. He doesn’t look dumb, far from it. He doesn’t even seem to be that dense to not know how university students function; how barbaric they can get and easily turn anything innocent into something malicious.
Curiosity takes the better of you so you ask, “Why are you doing this, sir?”
“You’re one of my best students,” He admits without hesitation, almost with glee, and you feel the blush creep up your neck, bleeding to your cheeks. “You’re punctual and attentive, not like the others who intentionally cause a ruckus for attention.” He praises. “And, if I’m being quite honest, that’s a breath of fresh air. You, darling, are a breath of fresh air.”
Darling? A pet name? You dare not think it but is he flirting with you? You’ve never once heard him call any other student by that name.
You avoid his gaze and pull your hand free from his hold, yet you already miss the warmth of it, opting to twiddle your fingers against your lap if only to distract you from his flowery words.
“What I mean is—” he clears his throat. “You deserve to pass my class. My best student does.”
-
You pack your things and wait by Professor Shade’s door, watching him stow away his things into his messenger bag and take his jacket that hangs at the back of his office chair. His eyes meet yours when he stands in front of you, a smile on his face before he opens the door and gestures you leave first, turning off the lights of his office and following suit, locking the door.
The corridor of his floor is dark except for the light at the end of the hall, making the building look somewhat eerie despite its modern architecture and decor.
“Would you like a ride to your dorm?” He asks, breaking the silence between you as you head to the elevators. “I’ve kept you quite a while and I’d want to be sure you make it back safe.”
“It’s only a short walk from here, Professor.” You smile at his kindness. “Thank you though.”
“Alright. You’ll also tell me what method would work for you best?” Another question and the elevator doors part, Professor Shade holding the doors back as you take a step inside. “The video call or the library?” He clarifies.
“I will.” You agree. “But so far, the library seems like the better option. I have a roommate and she can be quite a nuisance,” You don’t tell him that she likes to bring random boys into your dorm and can hear them through the thin walls. “I might not be able to focus on our lessons.”
“Very well.” The lift descends after he presses the button for the lobby and you end up staring at his reflection through the metal barrier. “I can book one of the study rooms in advance though would the same time still be feasible for you?”
“Mhmm, though I wouldn’t want to take too much of your time, professor.”
“Nonsense.” He chuckles. “I have nowhere else to be nor anyone to go home to.”
The ding of the elevator signals your arrival and you step outside, Professor Shade catching up with your stride before going ahead, his swiftness taking you by surprise when he opens the door for you.
“You’ll message me when you’ve decided?” He asks again as you both stand in front of the building, wrapping your arms around yourself to shield yourself from the chill. And for a moment, you feel a bit disoriented by his question. He chuckles, probably from seeing your confusion. “About the meeting place. The library or my office again?”
“Oh right.” You give an awkward smile. “I will.”
“You have my number, right?” You nod. “And my email?” Another nod. “Perfect. I’ll see you next week then, or around campus.” He says as he takes a step closer, your body shivering when the evening wind blows.
He seems to notice your discomfort. He puts down his bag on the concrete steps and to your surprise, drapes his coat over your shoulders. Your face is hot and you look down at your feet to avoid his eyes as his hands tug gently on the lapels of the jacket, pulling it snug around you.
“Are you sure you don’t want a ride to your dorm, darling? It’s really no trouble.”
You shake your head fast, knowing all too well that your face has already turned red from the pet name and his actions. Not trusting that you won’t make a fool out of yourself when you dare meet his eyes.
“I’m fine. Really.” You mumble and blink when his thumb and forefinger pinch your chin, tipping your head up to face him.
“Very well.” His voice is soft and you feel yourself being hypnotized by the way his eyes stare at you, how the glow of the moon makes his sapphires shine. “But let me tell you a secret before we part ways.”
“W-what is i-it?” You stammer.
He takes a deep breath and releases your chin, his hands taking hold of the coat once more. “I wouldn’t do this for anyone else. All this tutoring and whatnot.”
You can feel your heart pounding wildly in your chest as he inches closer, feeling the tips of his shoes brush against yours.
“What do you m-mean?”
“I’m only doing this for you.” He breathes. “Just you.”

Black Sails Monologuolympics 7.1: FLINT: ROUND 1 🩸
5/16: 107 vs 210
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flint, to Miranda, in 107: "It requires an intolerable sacrifice. To apologize. To England! They took everything from us. And then they called me a monster. The moment I sign that pardon, the moment I ask for one, I proclaim to the world that they were right. This ends when I grant them my forgiveness… not the other way around."
Flint, to Silver, in 210: "We stopped off in Tortuga to refit and garner news, of which there was plenty. Eleanor Guthrie's been arrested. Currently on her way back to London in the custody of Her Majesty's Navy to stand trial. For the first time since I've known it, there is no Guthrie in Nassau. One gets used to a state of affairs for such a long time, it's easy to forget that they're all just transitions. Specks of dust suspended in the air until a strong enough gust comes along and rearranges everything. A strong gust has come to this place. The men can feel it. Know it will upset everything they thought they understood just a few days ago. They'll need to lean on something solid. On the men who can reassure them that in times like these, there are some things that can be counted on. They'll look to me for that. But they'll also look to their new quartermaster. […] I think the men wanted to tell you when you awoke, so try and act surprised. It's a funny thing. The more those men need you, the more you need them. And it drives us to do the most unexpected things."

Top 7 Things I Enjoyed in 2023: Number 6
This year I got to see several musicals and movie musicals. Some of it is genuine interest in a genre I have always loved. Some of it is finally getting to watch classic musicals. Some of it is finally having the means to watch stuff on Broadway. Whatever the case, I'm spoiled for picks about musicals.
Into the Woods? It's amazing, but I saw the inferior Disney version years ago. Can't put it here.
A Little Night Music? As much as I love Send in the Clowns, the rest of the musical wasn't my favorite.
Sweeney Todd? Company? Frogs?
You might not be able to tell, but I'm just listing a bunch of Stephen Sondheim musicals I saw this year. The guy's amazing. But surely, I saw a musical this year I loved without Sondheim.
Yes… kinda.
Tumblr media
Number #6 – Tick, Tick… BOOM
The tragic story of Jonathan Larson is well-known in theater circles. He wrote one of the greatest musicals to hit the stage in RENT but wasn't able to see any of its success, dying just before it opened. He never quite got to see what would become of his works.
This semi-biographical movie takes place just before the two musicals he wrote before his big hit. He worked himself ragged to get the Superbia workshop off the ground. It's not just a matter of being stressed. He pushes multiple people close to him away just to get help writing the last song of the musical. Mind you, this is its most important number.
What happens next? I think you'd better watch it for yourself.
I don't know that we'd get this film if it weren't for a company willing to throw money at an idea that only kind of would make money. The original musical, starring Larson himself, lasted a few weeks in its initial run and has come up occasionally on Off-Broadway now and again. Not many production companies would think this would be as worthy of Oscar buzz as other musicals yet to hit the stage are. Yet the film did garner some buzz during awards season. I guess Netflix is good for something.
However, special props go to the debut directorial job of Lin-Manuel Miranda. This would be impressive for any director, but for a first crack, this was phenomenal. It helps, of course, that Miranda is no stranger to the musical world. Not to mention, he stared as Larson during a run of the musical Off-Broadway, across Leslie Odom Jr.
"Didn't you mention Sondheim?"
It turns out that Sondheim was a major influence on Larson. Not just in the way that his work inspired Larson. He was a guiding influence on Superbia, including the inclusion of that all-important song.
Sadly, Sondheim passed away the year this film came out. He was one of the greatest to do it. If the current (and potentially future) Broadway scene is anything to go by, he's been deeply missed.

"On its surface, the 1975’s self-titled album is a synthy pop-rock album about sex and drugs and girls. It’s an album about loving those things and being equally depressed by them. If you’re sympathetic to it, The 1975 is danceable and full of aspirationally messy vignettes that paint a portrait of a singer who is equal parts cool and tragic. If you’re not, it’s a bloated album full of unimaginative reference points genetically engineered to garner teenage fans written by a man with TV stars for parents and his three friends from school. I think, in truth, it is all of that at once." — Miranda Reinert for Stereogum, "The 1975 Turns 10" (8/31/23)
