After leaving Moiraine behind at the Eye of the World, Rand wanders southward, until he runs across the city of Cairhien, and discovers someone there he hadn't expected to see ever again.

"And you, Master Cauthon — how are you feeling this morning?"

"Well enough," Mat said. Healthier than he'd ever felt in his life, though he wouldn't tell her that. Though there was a glimmer in her eye, as if she knew exactly what he wasn't saying. Rand had told Mat about how Verin had talked him through the healing, so Mat supposed he was grateful. But he still didn't trust her. "We need another option."

"The Damodred estate," Verin said thoughtfully. "Something about its location is tickling at the back of my mind, though I can't place my finger on the precise- ah, perhaps we should ask Loial. Ogier have long memories and love to share their knowledge of history."

Mat pressed his fingertips against Rand's back, to soothe his worry and uncertainty over seeing Loial. Mat didn't remember the Ogier well, but Rand had been friendly enough with him, from what had been said.

I just realized that in the Wheel of Time books that while multiple characters were shown knitting, no characters were shown specifically wearing knitted clothing - which is strange, considering RJ’s penchant for using textiles as exposition or as signifiers of wealth, status, and/or disguise.

Shirts are described as having laces. Weaving is a profession. Seamstresses and dress-makers are held in high regard. Coats go over shirts, and cloaks go over coats. Embroidery is a plot point.

No mention of sweaters. No scarves. Gloves seem to be a rich person thing. No mittens. Hats sometimes, but the way they’re described makes it sound like they’re sewn. Headwear for winter seems to just be the hood on your cloak.

Are the knitted items just somewhere offscreen? Blankets maybe? Or are the only knitted items the stockings everyone seems to wear, because sewing a sock is just ridiculous. This also means that the first time we see Elaida - back when Elaida was cool, smart, dangerous, and hard as nails - she’s in court knitting a long-ass sock, and that visual is objectively fucking hilarious.

I didn’t even think of that!! But now that you mention it it’s like nearly identical. The wiki article says he’s not reborn as of the Third Age but hey why not! It would be fun if he was Bayle Domon and ended up finding the Seal for the Bore he drilled in a past life.

I would usually consider myself Mat Cauthon’s #1 defender and fan but then I remember Rand exists and I realize I’m a distant second place.

Tuon told him about how Mat literally kidnapped her and he straight up went “oh well, you probably deserved it. I’m sure he had a reason.”

Rand looks at Mat and goes “he’s just a silly little fella :)” and ignores all his crimes. Mat could stab someone out of nowhere and Rand’s first question would be “Mat! Are you hurt?” And the second “what did that guy do to you?”

WoT fic writing update:

Stars Fading: 4 parts still to post. I did reread what I’d already written this past weekend during downtime, so should hopefully be posting more of this soon. I’m pretty sure I need to rewrite half of what I already have written for the next chapter and I’m putting it off lol.

Voice Interlude: currently working on a 3-part interlude set in Cold Rocks Hold that explores polycule fun stuff, with a focus on Rand/Mat/Elayne

ACoS Annoyances to Lovers Mat/Elayne -> Mat/Elayne/Rand/Avi fic. Premise of this fic is that as part of the deal to help out Nynaeve and Elayne find the Bowl, Mat asks Elayne to pretend to be promised to him to ward off Tylin's advances

trust is (the taste of death): post-canon fic about Mat coming home; ends with Mat/Rand/Elayne.

Voice: chasing the golden dawn (first part & fifth part written; second part about half-written)

Colors: fragility of trust (some writing has been done on all the chapters in this fic). This fic focuses on TFoH era but with significant changes that bounce off what changed in the first Colors fic.

Witch of the Waterwoods: Moiraine finds Rand when he’s ten. definitely going to be show!verse. Probably more Moiraine/Siuan focused, it looks like.

I got an interesting idea from @essie007 on one of my reread posts that I want to explore (quote: “AU where Rand decimated his own army in a “useless and foolish” campaign against Ebou Dar only to find that Mat was there and he has now freed him….thus reenforcing Rand’s “I can’t fail/arrogance” thing.”) no title yet but about 4k written

walls tumbling down: here’s an AU idea that was inspired by Verin, lol. She talks about being worried about what the effect of having such a strong ta’veren would have had on the White Tower if Galina had actually managed to get him there. the PoV character on this one would be Seaine (the White Sitter that Elaida tapped to ‘root out traitors’ which Seaine interpreted as ‘Black Ajah’) and it might be Seaine/Pevara.

Barely breathing, he pressed himself against the wall of a tent and studied Asmodean.

Joar Addam Nessosin, came a whisper. Rand shook it off and focused on the man in front of him now, not who the man might have been thousands of years ago.

Spills of lace at the cuffs of his wrists, embroidery climbing up every inch of his unbuttoned coat, silk handkerchief peeking out of a pocket. The very image of a dissolute lord. Was that who he was, in his heart? Did he still see himself as some sort of dashing rake, who was evil only in the most charming of ways?

You would think he'd have learned better by now. All the smiles in the world don't cover up the stench of the graveyard.

walls tumbling down:

"The Dragon Reborn is only a man who can channel, after all," Galina said. "And that is within the purview of the Red Ajah. He has been tamed, Mother, and is ready to kiss your ring and ask for your mercy and guidance."

Young al'Thor's head cocked at Galina's words, though he didn't look towards her. He seemed intent on feeling out the stone of the floor with his fingers. He leveraged himself up to his hands and his knees, though he looked wobbly. How long had… had he only been in that chest to hide him from the eyes of the city or had he been in there longer, Seaine wondered.

"Prove to the Amyrlin Seat that you are obedient, child," Galina barked out, but the boy ignored her. Her face flushed with anger and confusion.

Galina then slammed a flow of Air, thick as a tree branch, down against the boy's back with a crack that reverberated in the Hall of Servants.

Seaine heard some gasps of shock among those in the Hall but she couldn't take her eyes from al'Thor. He barely seemed to notice the attack, bending against it then straightening up, sitting back on his heels. His face was bruised, but it was an older mark, at least a few hours old.

"I'm afraid I've misled you," he said, after a moment. His gaze lifted but not towards Galina or even Elaida. Instead, his eyes swept around the room across the Sitters. Seaine shivered when his gaze crossed her face. She had never seen eyes so cold, like chips of ice, pale gray and hollow. They were the eyes of a dead man. "I have no intention of being another Roalin or Yurian. No intention of being another Logain, to be used and discarded by the White Tower."

His voice was scratchy and cracked, but just as frigid as his eyes.
