for  those  who  are  aware  of  the  uk  version  of  shameless,   mimi  maguire  is  the  matriarch  of  the  uk’s  equivalent  of  the  us’  malkovich  family.   for  my  us  adapted  version,   she  is  the  teen  mother  to  jamie  maguire,   had  him  when  she  just  turned  fourteen.   her  maiden  name  is  murphy,   but  married  jamie’s  father,   paddy,   rather  young.   however,   he  was  murdered.   she’s  the  same  age  as  lip,   having  went  to  school  with  him,   karen   &   mandy.   her  family,   much  like  her  uk  counterpart,   are  big  players  on  the  drug  scene.   she’s  hard  as  nails,   she  can  hold  her  own  with  men   &   women  alike,   not  to  be  messed  with.   she  is  extremely  violent   &   easily  angered,   but  considers  herself  to  be  a  devout  catholic.

Having watched all of UK Shameless and most of the US one, I was thinking about some of the characters.

So for example, Steve.

Obviously, the US Shameless is basically the exact same as the original for the first series, some of the second, and what bugged me about US Steve was that he was an absolutely shit version of the UK one. His delivery of some of UK Steve's quotes had me rolling my eyes, he has none of the charm that McAvoy's version does. Also, the way he treats her family. The appeal of UK Steve was rooted in the fact he actually wanted to be there, with her AND her family, not despite them. He starts off strong in this regard, but he poorly tanks out and you can see that he actually holds them in disdain and is there despite them.

Fiona, however, is both different and the same. I love them both equally, and the US Fiona just reminds me of how much I wish we got more of UK Fiona.

However, I really can't stand US Frank, he has its moments that are funny, but he absolutely has no redeeming qualities imo. UK Frank just does it better, it's hard to follow up his act. Plus, UK Frank definitely held more affection for his family, he was just not willing to put in the work. I also feel like his delivery for most of the jokes US Frank repeats were better, funnier.

Lip is definitely different too, and I like both versions a lot. His relationship with Mandy is better in the UK one. Ian is a mixed bag for me, I like them both, but UK Ian is very different. So, it's a bit weird to compare.

I prefer US Carl, but UK Carl is pretty fun too. Debbie, imo, is much better in the UK version. I don't dislike US Debbie, she definitely has some great storylines in the US one, but as a whole, I just prefer the UK one.

Kev and Vee had a very short run in the UK series, disappearing around Season 4? Which was a crying shame, because I absolutely loved them. I also absolutely love the US version of them, they are amazing. I actually can't choose a fav, because I love both so much.

I really wish the Maguires had been translated better into the US version, US Mickey is far better than UK, but I really hated Terry, and I think a version of Paddy would have been better. I absolutely loved Paddy and Mimi, and I wish there had been a US Mimi.

AWKWARD MOMENTS

Dúo formado por la artista de origen chino Mimi Xu -productora, compositora electrónica y directora creativa visual- y Gillian Maguire -multiinstrumentista clásica y vocalista principal- con base en Londres. El dúo presenta por primera vez en Madrid el concierto audiovisual “A Strange Time” y para ello han concebido un site specific en colaboración con los visualistas Ana Piquer Hidalgo y Pablo Miguel Álvarez Pelegero.

El proyecto Akward Moments comprende una serie de performances vinculadas a las artes escénicas donde utilizan medios mixtos para explorar las implicaciones emocionales, filosóficas y metafísicas del ciclo de vida y su eterno retorno. Desde su primer espectáculo en el Houghton Festival 2018, representan lo más destacado del arte performativo contemporáneo e inmersivo. El dúo entrelaza ritmos electrónicos sobre instrumentos orgánicos y voces atmosféricas para reflejar la relación entre lo tangible y lo etéreo, entre fragmentación y orden. Este concepto consiguen explorarlo más a fondo mediante la proyección multimedia de imágenes abstractas en movimiento. La esencia está en capturar la naturaleza efímera de la actuación en vivo y reflexionar sobre diversos temas desde la realidad social, el viaje emocional y las nuevas narrativas de ficción.

Su primer LP de seis pistas “An Entropic Cycle” fue lanzado el 13 de marzo de 2020. Durante el confinamiento por la pandemia de la COVID’19, el dúo trabajó en una serie de mixtapes audiovisuales presentados en System Magazine, Quarantine Radio y Live for Love Charity. En el verano de 2020 lanzaron 4 remixes extraídos de su álbum debut llamado “An Entropic Remix EP”. Además, Awkward Moments también presenta un programa de radio mensual "An Entropic Hour" en OpenLab Radio. Su nuevo espectáculo en vivo, "A Strange Time" supondrá un viaje hacia los rincones oscuros de la psique con ganas de volver a salir a la pista de baile, en una divertida interacción entre la introspección y conectividad. Este tira y afloja entre lo personal y lo colectivo cobra vida en un directo con visuales explosivo.

I'm pretty okay right now, school is fairly managable (except for physics because it's a dumb and invalid form of science) but I get to see a lot of people that I haven't seen in like 2 years so that's fun.

Marley and Unique - They have movie nights every week and watch all the disney plus shows.

Jake - Infinity War, Civil War, or Endgame. He loves the big crossover events

Quinn - Quinn likes Eternals because she has superior taste

Puck - Shang-Chi, he likes the fight scenes (and the family scenes made him cry but no one say anything)

Tina- Black Widow because she's a baddie

Wes - The Avengers because the score is freakin amazing

Blaine - Also the Avengers but because he's a giant nerd

Sam - Also also the Avengers because he's a giant nerd (he also likes Toby Maguire spider-man)

hello and welcome to Me Giving Opinions About Things Nobody Cares About. This week is Shameless: UK vs US

Bearing in mind I’m only up to season 4 of US so character developments and changes might still happen idk, why am i writing this?

GOOD DIFFERENCES:

Ian and Mickey: Oh my god, hands down the best fucking change. I have no words for how insufferable Mickey is in the UK version, plus there was never this overarching romance or anything it was just a comedy side bit. 10/10.

Monica: UK Monica was awful, to the point where it became almost unwatchable because there was no redemption but there was always the “frank and monica” aspect, so I appreciate that US Monica is more fleshed out and humanized. 

Debbie: Not very deep, just that teenage UK Debbie was incredibly annoying and US Debbie is not as annoying.��

Fiona, Kev and V: again, not deep, simply that all those characters left early on in the UK version but they seem to be a staple in US, esp. Fiona. 

BAD DIFFERENCES:

Lip: Any insufferability that was taken away from Mickey was given to Lip. I definitely don’t remember UK Lip being this much of a dick.

Karen and Mandy: idk this may be because I’m still early in the series but both of them definitely have less of a personality and are atm just used as secondary Lip storylines. both UK Mandy and Karen are fully fleshed out characters, kinda sad to see them just be used as pawns. 

Yvonne: Bit of a weird one, Kash’s wife in UK was called Yvonne and carried on with the shop even after Kash left, she was great and was in the majority of the series if I remember correctly. US changes her name to Linda and she was in, like, 2 episodes, guess they didn’t want to use her as a character. idk i just really liked Yvonne.

I guess this one just doesn’t translate, but the idea of UK Shameless was the community within “the chatsworth estate”, and I guess the US doesn’t really have “council estates” as such? I do appreciate them using Chicago instead of New York or something though, it feels more in tune with the Manchester feeling of it all. 

Lillian: She doesn’t exist in the US version :(

The Maguires/Milkoviches: I mean, what the fuck. The idea of the Maguire family is GREAT and they just...don’t use it? One of the most memorable moments of Shameless UK is after Lip gets Mandy pregnant he has to see the family, and it’s dark and looming cause they’re this big crime family and ugh it’s so good. The Paddy and Mimi (mum and dad) relationship was really good too, but what do they do? They kill off the mum instantly, then turn the dad into a racist, daughter-raping scumbag, like, no redemption possible with him. As much as I like the focus being on Mickey they still 100% missed a trick by not making the Milkovich family an actual Thing™

BAD THINGS THAT STAYED THE SAME:

Jimmy/Steve: Hated him the UK version, hated him in the US version. If James Mcavoy can’t convince me to like his character then nobody can.

also, if US Tony does the same thing he does in the UK version then I’m gonna kick off, that whole storyline was creepy and unnecessary and I don’t want to relive it lmao
