Tattoos are often symbolic, but I somehow missed the symbolism of these ones until now. I just now realized that Terry Milkovich has a tattoo above his heart that is hate speech, while Mickey Milkovich got a tattoo above his heart in a pronouncement of love.
Terry got to his son's knuckles early and made it the first thing people saw. Fuck u-up that's what Mickey Milkovich will do, that's what any Milkovich will do, but Terry couldn't get to his core, couldn't put hate there, because Ian Gallagher got there and didn't let go.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I also think it's interesting how after Terry died, we found out about his past with a woman he loved. He had done everything he could to be with her and ultimately killed for her, and she rejected him, leading him to a life of hate and anger. He just gave up on this woman and being with her. (He killed her father, so it's a bit hard to come back from, but still)
Mickey did everything to be with Ian, came out for him, took care of him, and attempted to kill Sammi for what she did to Ian, but he still got broken up with. He could easily have gone the path of his father, of hating Ian, hating everyone, but instead he carved Ian's name into him and asked him to lie, for him, because 8 years was a long time. His thoughts of them together kept him going in prison until he could escape, and when he did he found Ian again. And even then Mickey didn't hate him for not being able to cross the boarder because the love in his heart was stronger than any hate or bitterness, to the point he didn't hesitate to turn himself in to be with Ian once again.
Tumblr media
I mean, how fucking beautiful is that? Mickey became the most loving person by being loved. He's not his father, and he'll never be his father, because he never gave up on love like Terry did. At his core Mickey is love.

mickey milkovich x nude, radiohead
i don’t think that anybody can disagree that 1x07 is the episode where we learn the most about mickey milkovich. no, i don’t mean he showed any development or anything like that, but we learned something about him that made him significant for the rest of the show. something that never leaves, something that is important to him. in 1x07, we learn that mickey milkovich is gay, and we learn that he is willing to sleep with ian gallagher (even when his father and sister are in the house).
in 1x06, mickey kind of has an interaction with ian that we later see and are like, “yeah, he’s totally gay”, but back then it wasn’t stated that mickey was gay. mickey steals shit from the kash and grab, and he tells ian, “you know where i live if you have a problem” kind of instigating that ian should come over.
but in 1x07, mickey has stolen the gun from the kash and grab, and ian goes to mickey’s house equipped with a tyre iron, ready to take it back.
the “i want the gun back, mickey” scene needs no introduction or explanation. we all know what happened. we all watched in awe as mickey stood over ian and both of their breaths evened out and they made contact and… bam! they’re getting undressed, just like that.
later on, we are no stranger to gallavich and fighting then fucking. it’s something many people know them for, the fact that they’ll literally beat the shit out of each other and then immediately get on each other. but here, it was supposed to be for shock value because shameless utilizes shock value. to those who didn’t know gallavich was going to happen, watching mickey, the thug who had literally just attempted murder on ian, undress and fuck ian was surprising. later on, we can understand why it happened, but we were supposed to be shocked.
so, here’s where nude by radiohead comes in.
terry wakes up from a nap and goes to take a piss in mickey’s room (there’s a bathroom in there, he isn’t just pissing in it, lol). in there, ian and mickey are naked under mickey’s covers. around them, we see a poster of a woman and we also see a drawing mickey made that says “fuck love”.
so when terry comes out of the bathroom and looks at them both, he doesn’t do what season 3 terry does, he simply says “put some clothes on, you two look like a couple of fags!” and it’s a comical scene because, what the fuck, terry, aren’t you a homophobic murderer? you woke up to grunts and crashes coming from mickey’s room, then when you came in he and another boy are naked in his bed… what do you think they were doing?
so when mickey does put some clothes on, he puts on a radiohead shirt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the shirt says “you’ll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking” and those are the last lyrics of the radiohead song “nude”.
so for those who haven’t listened to the song, here’s my analysis of why this song is associated with mickey milkovich and how it ends up foreshadowing his entire character for the next four seasons.
“don’t get any big ideas
they’re not gonna happen”
literally this scene. mickey caves and gives ian the gun back because lets be honest, it was really just bait. ian leans in to kiss him, and mickey has a look in his eyes where you can tell he wants to, but he can’t. he built this wall up years ago and he’s already cursing himself for letting it come down. terry instructed him to get dressed, and he puts on this shirt. and he’s trying to put this carefully constructed mask back on but he’s struggling. and so, he pushes ian away, “kiss me and i’ll cut your fucking tounge out”. there’s no malice in his tone, it’s a threat, but it isn’t threatening.
“you paint yourself white
and fill up with noise
but there'll be something missing”
mickey hiding in the closet, marrying svetlana, being a father to yevgeny, trying to act like the perfect son of terry. he still has this mask on and he tries to hide who he is but alas, he can’t. he loves ian too much and when he gets married and pushes him away, he’s still gay and in love.
“now that you found it
it’s gone”
upon being married, he tells ian that they can still bang. maybe being married to a woman makes him feel a bit more secure because although he despises it and it’s crushing him, he can keep his whole “king of the southside” thing. now that he’s married and unhappy, terry’s satisfied, and that’s all that matters- well, at one point it was. so he tells ian that they can still fuck, but suddenly, ian isn’t as eager and easy as he once was, and he leaves. he’s gone.
“now that you feel it
you don't
you’ve gone off the rails”
he’s out, he’s with ian, he has ian. things are supposed to be fine- but they’re not. ian’s unstable and has been hospitalized, and mickey breaks. he gets shitfaced and cuts his cheek and cries into ian’s jacket. that wall he once built up? the chest he puffed up, the posters he hung, the tattoos he got, they all mean nothing. it’s all gone. the wall and mask are gone, he’s more fragile than he once was. ian’s broken and it’s simultaneously breaking him too.
“so don't get any big ideas
they're not gonna happen”
this line is so mickey in s5, s6, s7, and s10. ian calling him and mickey running to see ian. he has hope. but no, ian breaks up with him, mickey is arrested, and when ian visits he desperately wants ian back. he tattoos ian’s name on his chest, specifically over his heart, and he practically pleads for ian to stay. then, mickey and ian are fleeing to mexico, and for a second, he has hope again. he fantasizes about he and ian at the beach, ian’s freckled skin being sunburnt, them swimming in the ocean together. for once, he can imagine his dreams being true. but they aren’t. he and ian are getting their marriage license, but ian’s hand wavers over the dotted line and he gives mickey that look and mickey breaks (…ian’s leg. lol). he keeps getting his hopes up and everytime he scolds himself for it because he just ends up hopeless.
then finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for,
“you'll go to hell
for what your dirty mind
is thinking”
it’s in the 1x07 scene i’m talking about. terry instructs mickey to get dressed, he does, and he puts on a shirt that says this. and in that shirt, he seems odd. the confidence we see him have in 1x03 is no longer there. he doesn’t necessarily look vulnerable, but he isn’t the mickey he pretends to be. he caves and returns the gun, which was just bait for ian to come anyway, and he refuses to make eye contact with ian, but when he does, it’s almost coy? he’s ashamed. he’s thinking of things he know would get him killed and he hates himself for it. terry will end him if he finds out, and yes, he has the posters, the reputation, the persona, the tattoos, the guns, etc. but in the end, it’s all an act, and we can see it. the way he licks his lips, the way his eyes won’t focus, his body language says so much.

I think mickey was Terry's favourite.
His other brothers are always made to be kinda dumb not mickey, tho. I think Terry saw that. Mickey was the smart one. When Terry needed something done, he asked mickey first. Mickey was the one Terry saw potential in.
This would have its good parts, but it would have even more bad parts. When mickey messed up, Terry was even more disappointed because he expected more from mickey. When mickey came out, Terry wasn't only angry because he was gay. He felt betrayed. Mickey was hit harder, screamed at louder, and blamed more. Mickey was expected to be perfect, whereas his brothers were expected to do dumb shit.
Mickey was reliable, and he was loyal. Mickey is a hard worker. Terry knows that. I wouldn't expect Terry to care about hiding favouritism, so I'm sure everyone in that house saw how mickey was treated differently.
Terry didn't kill mickey when he caught mickey and Ian because he couldn't let mickey go. In a very fucked up way Terry tried to help him. Terry doesn't even really cut contact. He tells mickey to get out of his house in s4, but in s10, they are still talking.
Even tho mickey was his favourite, tho it never came from a place of love. It was about what mickey could give him. That's what makes it worse. Mickey has all the bad parts that come along with being the favourite without the good.

I see people say that season 8 Ian wouldn't have happened if Mickey was still around, but am I the only one who thinks it could have? Like I agree Mickey would actively try to stop Ian from going to far but I also think it makes sense that Ian was triggered by the conversion therapy stuff. What happened with him and Mickey and Svetlana would be a major trigger hearing about other kids being abused. Maybe if Mickey was in the show at the time Terry and his Nazi friends would be involved with some anti-gay stuff.
Maybe the reason Mickey couldn't intervene with Ian was because he had to help Svetlana with some immigration drama or something taking him away from Ian or causing Ian to pull away from them. Because as much as I agree galladads don't work (mostly because when I see it written in fics Mickey and Ian are way to soft so it's turned me off the idea) I do think Mickey has a strong sense of family loyalty as we see him in later seasons still working with his dad and he would have a sense of duty to take care of Svetlana and Yev if he was around.
But seeing that relationship at a time when Ian is not in his right mind may drive him even further. Like maybe Ian would think on some level that Terry won and Mickey has a perfect little family with a wife and child. And we know no one in the show is great at communicating their feelings so things would get out of hand for Ian and he might have ended up doing something stupid even if Mickey was still in the show. He might not blown up a van and I don't think Gay Jesus would happen but something would happen. Like I don't think the show is wrong to explore that trigger for Ian. I just think how it happened was not right and dare I say, if Mickey was around it might have made even more sense?

i will never not feel so bad for ian because of how his parents treated him.
as far as we know, ian was the only one who was physically abused by frank throughout his childhood. frank hated ian the most because he “looked the most like his mother” (and the most like frank’s brother, clayton, ian’s actual dad clayton, but nobody actually ever says that) and ian thinking that he looks/acts like monica seriously effects him later on. frank treats him like absolute dog shit, and we hear ian say that when he was six frank locked him in the basement for days. one of the biggest things about shameless is the “cycle of abuse” and frank’s treatment of ian is ironic because from what we know, frank was the only one his parents ever abused (physically, at least).
and for monica, ian was his favorite. i don’t give a shit if fiona says that lip is her favorite, from monica’s first episode’s it’s been apparent that it’s ian. for example- not giving a shit about any of her children’s accomplishments until it comes to ian, and her eyes light up, or making lasagna “ian’s favorite” (it’s not). but being monica’s favorite isn’t actually a good thing. monica seriously abused ian, too, and people don’t always awknolege that. their relationship was built on manipulation, monica’s victim complex, and neglect. she did nothing but use and hurt him, and whether or not she really loved him doesn’t really matter because either way it just hurt him. and the saddest thing is no matter how far away he pushes her, he’s still attached and he still loves her. we don’t know what she truly put him through as a child, but we can assume that it was hell. from ian’s whole speech to her in 7x09 we can tell that he definitely needed her, but she was never there. this is also apparent in fiona’s monologue in 7x12.
also, in season 11 when debbie tells frank, “you ruined love for me!” that definitely also applies to what ian was saying in season 10 about having frank and monica as role models for love. they damaged him so fucking badly and even though he did get a happy ending, he got totally screwed over.
i get that people hate ian for saying that frank was worse than terry in hall of shame, and i made a whole post about that (here!), and although if we’re really thinking about it, yeah, terry was technically worse; ian still went through so much traumatic shit that needs to be taken into account.

I think someone should write a fic where mickey meets child Terry, like 8-10 yrs old when he's an adult. (I guess this would be time travel??) Anyway and then make Terry be a sweet but hurt kid who isn't anything like the fucking evil prick he is as an adult. And at some point, I want Kid Terry to ask mickey if he's a good dad in the future, and I want mickey to LIE and say he did a good job. And Ian should like overhear and be like, "Why did u lie?" and mickey starts explaining that he just can't let him down like that.
Like mickey is talking to the man who undeniably ruined his childhood, who caused 99% of bad things to happen to him, but mickey understands that the kid he's talking to isn't his Terry yet. Maybe if mickey lies that Terry will grow up more hopeful, maybe he will try to be a better person. AND MAYBE mickey sees himself in Kid Terry. Terry, as a kid, is scared, hurt, and has a lot going on at home, and of course, mickey understands that. Mickey doesn't want to end up as dad when he has kids, and this lil Terry feels that too. BUT TERRY DOESN'T GROW UP TO BE A GOOD PERSON. we all know that ans that is terrifying to mickey. But the pure fact he is looking at the person who ruined him time and time again and still protected his feelings shows THAT HE CAN BE BETTER THAN TERRY. Where as Terry grew up to give people the same pain as he got to other people, mickey is giving people the love he wishes he got.
So this is what I'm thinking about rn.

So I made these layouts of 1955 Zemansky Road for myself, and I figured others might be interested so I cleaned them up a little. Don't focus too much on the scale of rooms/doors/windows.
On the left we have an amalgamation of season 1-3, which stayed decently consistent after season 2's kitchen and laundry extension. On the right is season 3-5. There is a basement as confirmed in season 11, so... more bedrooms down there? I had to make some concessions for window placement but all in all I think this is pretty accurate.

Svetlana Yevgenivna Hc's.
My first time writing Hc's so it's probably all over the place but I tried.
Svetlana honestly deserves more recognition. Love her 😌💅🏻.
Tumblr media
=================
• P R O T E C T I V E
• If a fight ever happens to break out, Svetlana is alright with standing back and letting you handle it, should you be able too.
• But she's also willing to kill for you (*cough* Yvon *cough*).
• Definitely expects you to help out with Yevgeny. Since y'now Mickey isn't exactly a present parent.
• Depending on how much you're willing to tolerate, this relationship could be good or turn toxic real quick.
• Svetlana loves hard but severely lacks communication. So again if you're someone who values communication above all in a relationship. Expect a LOT of arguments to happen or the relationship to end pretty quick.
• This one's obvious but Svetlana expects a sexual relationship, (Sorry acesexual's), especially if you're AFAB.
• Svetlana will be quite pleased if you're Russian, and or know Russian. She's been in America a while now and has faced a lot of Xenophobia in the process so being able to speak her native tongue with someone who understands her, and is not another prostitute, is greatly appreciated.
• If you're AMAB, either you have to have a good sum of money to be able to keep her and her son or you know what you're doing between the sheets (or both). Svetlana has always leaned more towards women but isn't adverse to being with a man for the sake of living comfortably.
• Isn't really keen on meeting your family, if you still have contact with them. She'd much prefer you focus on the family you've made with her and Yevgeny (and any kids you may have).
• Also not a good idea to ask her about her past/family. She doesn't want to talk about it and will most likely not tell you/tell the truth.
• All in all, a relationship with Svetlana requires a specific type of person for this too last/go well. She'll have a sexual relationship with pretty much anyone but if you want something more from her you'll need to put in some work.
