Women in Denmark are to be conscripted for military service for the first time under a proposed armed forces overhaul that comes amid Europe’s worsening relations with Russia and the war in Ukraine.
“We do not rearm because we want war. We are rearming because we want to avoid it,” said the prime minister, Mette Frederiksen.
The government, she said, wanted “full equality between the sexes” and to extend the length of military service from four to 11 months.
Under plans for its 2024-2033 defence settlement, 5,000 conscripts, both male and female, will be called up each year from 2026.
About 4,700 people did military service last year, women only on a voluntary basis, and usually for four months.
The plans have yet to be made law, with negotiations set to take place between parties in the coming weeks, but in June last year a broad majority in the Folketinget – the Danish parliament – agreed with a defence settlement specifying greater equality in conscription.
The defence department said its armed forces needed a “historic strengthening” that required a rethink of the conscription model amid growing concerns over Europe’s defence capabilities in the face of Russian aggression.
Denmark’s defence minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, said: “Unfortunately, the security policy situation in Europe has become more and more serious, and we have to take that into account when we look at future defence. A more robust conscription, including full gender equality, must contribute to the armed forces’ task resolution, national mobilisation and to manning our armed forces.”
He added: “It is absolutely crucial that we get a more robust conscription in Denmark when we have to build up the Danish defence. Therefore, a broader basis for recruiting that includes all genders is needed.”
Under the new 11-month conscription model, announced on Wednesday, conscripts will be given five months of basic training before spending six months in operational service across the army, air force and navy, during which they will also have training.
At the moment, all physically fit men over the age of 18 in Denmark, which has a population of just under 6 million, can be called up for military service. Because enough men do so voluntarily, there is a lottery system that means not all of them have to serve.
In 1998, women were permitted for the first time to serve military service on a voluntary basis.
Flemming Lentfer, the chief of defence, said conscription expansion was a “necessary foundation” for strengthening Denmark’s armed forces’ combat power.
“In the armed forces, we support all initiatives that can expand our recruitment base and increase diversity. Here, a higher degree of equality between the sexes is both necessary and desirable,” he said.

Ron DeSantis warns Floridians “Don’t say gay” and “Don’t say black”.
In Russia, the Putin clique tells the military, “Don’t say mobilization”.
Now, with a sputtering winter offensive in the eastern Donbas region in its second month and Ukraine telegraphing its own spring offensive, Russian officials are again trying to boost numbers. At least 42 regions across the country are now sending out summons to eligible men, according to human rights lawyer Pavel Chikov. One news site known for supporting government policies said the official target was to enlist up to 400,000 men.
Whatever it is, it's not a mobilization, the Kremlin insists. “There are no such discussions,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by news agencies as saying on March 15, when asked: “Is the Kremlin discussing a second wave of mobilization?” But if it is not yet a major, mandatory call-up, it may turn into one.
The war is called a “special operation” by the Putinistas and the Russian media. Saying “war” can land you in the gulag.
Whatever it is, it’s a shambles as well as a violation of international law.

"OLD CITY REGISTRY NOW M.P. BARRACKS," Toronto World. December 11, 1918. Page 5. ---- The military police headquarters for No. 2 district have been moved from the corner of Adelaide and Victoria streets to the old city registry office on Richmond street opposite The World Building. The military exigencies of the day are. responsible for the transformation of more than one respectable, easy-going old build- ing in the city into a hive of soldierly activity and business life, and the old city registry building, which has been unoccupied for about two years, has become one of them. The engineers are at work in the building, changing the interior to suit the needs of the military police. The empty pigeon-holes have been torn out, and partitions are being constructed. The musty old vaults, which formerly contained the secrets and mysteries of the city's registration records, are now yawning wide for the reception of military offenders' records. The main office of the building looks like a barracks in the heart of the city, with uniformed men and military equipment on every hand. There are about one hundred and seventy-five men connected with the new headquarters, and they are divided into three platoons, working in a day-and-night shift; one platoon on duty in the day and one at night, with a third held in reserve in emergency. case of The men go on patrol with the civil police. Some are scattered round the city in the different police stations, where they may be rapidly concentrated in case of necessity. The method of patrolling the military police with the civil police is similar to that employed in London, where it has been the custom for a military policeman, a naval policeman and the civil policeman to patrol together. The new offices are more commodious than the old ones, and when completed will afford every facility and convenience needed. The building has been occupied by the office staff for about a week.

Don’t mind me, just thinking about how Victor and Rufus definitely had to fight in WW2, and how in the aftermath, that probably was a catalyst for them to start taking the Elixir of Life

I'm not sure why some people are surprised by this. It's an entirely different method and mindset of fighting when you have nothing left to lose and believe down deep in what you are doing. Compare that to untrained 19-20 year old idiot conscripts who would rather be on TikTok and have zero discipline and this is the result.

I am begging you all to please stop being so ignorant about being queer in heavy right-wing, conservative spaces.
The amount of discrimination and hate that I personally experienced while serving as a queer person in the military was f*cking awful and I would never want anyone else to experience that. The military isn’t a joke or some fun vacation. Pls stop treating it as such.
The ignorance makes me so sad ☹️

Unless you want to end up as a human sacrifice to Putin’s imperialistic vanity, the time to get out of Russia is right now.
Putin is scheduled to make a national address on Tuesday. He may be announcing another round of mobilizations at that time.
Russian troops are poorly equipped and even more poorly trained.
Putin Has a Problem: Russia Sends Troops with Almost No Training to Ukraine
Russian forces are in the midst of a large-scale offensive in Ukraine. However, it isn’t going well, and the Russian units are taking heavy casualties.
[ ... ]
The most recent assessments by Western militaries and intelligence services suggest that the Russian forces have lost up to 200,000 troops killed or wounded.
After the partial mobilization in September, the Russian Ministry of Defense has been sending mobilized reservists into frontline units to fill in the gaps created by casualties.
[ ... ]
Russian units on the front ended up receiving poorly trained and unmotivated reservists. But because they are often elite units, such as VDV paratroopers or marines, Russian commanders expect them to perform.
And so, they send them against tough Ukrainian resistance. The end result is more Russian casualties and almost no progress at all.
If you don’t end up as dead meat for Putin, you might survive to be put on trial as a war criminal for genocide in Ukraine.
Whatever the inconvenience is today, it’s better to leave the country than to face a doomed future.

kinda feel like i'm being punched in the boob everytime HYBE makes an official announcement talking about their upcoming military service. like it's surreal to me watching these global superstars having to go into the military. i'm not saying they should be exempt because that's not my place to say, but i am saying as a person who has served in the military that it's pains me on a level i cannot describe to watch the people that help me cope with ptsd from my short time in the military have to now get in the military.
i like to keep things separate. bad coping method. and now two life altering parts of my life are in one category.
i hate that for myself and now for them.
i just feel fucking sad.
