How do you want to be known on Tumblr? Kelsey

1- When did you start playing Choices? What's the first book you played?

What is time? I literally have no sense of the time that has passed since the pandemic, but I do know I started playing Choices shortly before, so it must have been 2019. My first book was Perfect Match, and it set the bar pretty high!

2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?

After a massive betrayal by my bestie @jamespotterthefirst . . . no, jk, I just discovered that she had a secret side-blog dedicated to Choices, for which I had never even considered there might be an entire fandom! I don’t know why I didn’t go looking for one, but I’m very glad I found it! First, I joined because I am contractually obligated to read everything Bree writes, but I’ve stayed for the opportunity to post my own fics and interact with the lovely people here.

3- How did you pick your url name?

Ha, well, I don’t run a Meghan Markle hate blog, contrary to what some may believe ;) I joined Tumblr in 2011 or 2012 and was active in the Lily/James/Marauders-era corner of the Harry Potter fandom. There were a LOT of us, so it was difficult to find a url that wasn’t already taken. I had to get obscure, lol. So, my url name is a reference to James Potter shouting “Lily, take Harry and go!” before Voldemort kills him, in honor of my favorite tragic idiot.

4- Go back to your archive and tell us about the first post on your Choices blog.

Well, since this is a blog that I’ve had for over a decade...I decided to go back to my first post tagged #Choices as a close proxy. No surprise, it was a fic by @jamespotterthefirst (Adore You). That was Book 2-era, though, so obviously, I must have posted something before then. No doubt it was also Open Heart-related!

5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?

Since college. Ah, the fanfiction.net days....

6- What is your favorite Choices book to write about?

Open Heart, since it is the ONLY one I’ve written about!

7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it or would you change anything about it?

Choosing to interpret this as the first Choices fic, because I don’t even want to think about how cringe my VERY first fanfic was.

The first one I posted was Irresistible (nsfw). I’m still happy with it, but if I could change anything, I would make it sluttier 😏

8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

My first Sherlock AU series will always have a special place in my heart 😊 Although I did also feel quite proud about tackling the logistical challenges of writing an actual “choices” fic with The Night Shift.

9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be but could use a little more love?

I guess I never really go in with any particular expectations, because I know that isn’t the healthiest approach to writing (easier said than done of course!) But I am always surprised and grateful for how many people are willing to stick with series-length fics and see them through to the end!

10- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

This is like a really tough FMK! For Ethan and Meredith, though, it would have to be smut. I can’t imagine never writing another sexy fic for them again 😔

11- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?

Oh, definitely! Not necessarily in the major personality traits, but I’ve given Meredith several life details similar to mine (like the fact that she grew up in MN, some of her likes and dislikes, etc.) It makes them easier to remember for one lol, but I also think it felt natural for a Choices MC where the stories are told from the second person point of view. I think she has a bit of my sense of humor, too 😉

12- What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Scene-setting, and emotional descriptions. I’m terrible at finding metaphors that don’t sound cheesy or like I was trying too hard. Writing dialogue flows naturally for me, while the rest is something I have to put more intentional work into. I actually get so caught up in the dialogue sometimes that I have to go back and write narrative or scene transitions after the fact!

13- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

I’m really weird and rarely have multiple WIPs going at once, nor do I have any abandoned fics. I do owe people the third part of my Lawyers AU though!

14- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

NOPE

15 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?

I’m not sure! I tend to like mystery/thriller/crime writing, but cannot write those genres to save my life lol. I don’t think I’ve explicitly tried to model any particular kind of author. For much of my life I probably would have said JKR, but.... 😬

As far as fanfic writers, I always try to channel Bree’s brilliant use of metaphors, but usually fail miserably lmao.

16- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?

Gotta go with the Sherlock AU again! That would be brilliant.

17- Do you write original stories?

Only when I was younger. My best friend in middle school and I had a whole series planned, where we were each writing about characters in the same invented universe who would eventually meet. The premise was two sisters separated at birth who end up being raised in separate countries that go to war with each other. Each sister disguises herself as a boy to join the army (we were both really into the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce at the time), and naturally end up marrying the princes of their respective countries, as well as discovering the connection to each other. They are then the key players in bringing peace between the two nations 😂. We had full, detailed timelines planned out and everything. And I’d written a good part of a first book, all by hand in a notebook with different colored gel pens 😆. I transcribed it into Word at one point and it was over 100 pages! But 100 pages of extremely terrible, pre-teen writing.

18 - What other hobbies do you have?

Is watching Netflix a hobby? 😆

Between working full-time and taking care of a house (which I am very privileged to have, and don’t take for granted, but I’ve also discovered that being a homeowner is a LOT of work), I don’t really feel like I have the energy for much else! When I do have free time, I like taking walks with my dog, going on bike rides with my husband (summer) or snowshoeing (winter), playing piano, baking, and spending time with friends or family.

I’m so grateful for @jerzwriter and @lucy-268 and the many others who go WAY above and beyond to keep this fandom engaged and connected! I honestly don’t know where you find the energy (see my answer to 18 lol), especially since some of you are also raising kids! I know I do the bare minimum to stay engaged here, and I’m so in awe of those who take the time to do much, much more.

Hello again listeners!

After a short hiatus, we are back! And we’re very excited to be bringing you a three part discussion on the cultural phenomenon that is Little Women. 👭🏼👭🏻

For our discussions, we’ll be focusing on two of the most beloved adaptations of the original 19th century novel: Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 film, starring Winona Ryder as Jo, and Greta Gerwig’s 2019 version starring Saoirse Ronan.

Through these three episodes we want to ask the question of whether ‘every generation deserves its own Little Women’, why the story remains so popular, and how its rich history of adaptation and analysis interact to inform our current understanding of the text.

Our main focus in this episode is how the 1994 and 2019 versions build, comment on, and reimagine the story of Little Women for their respective audiences, using not only the ‘original’ text, but also previous adaptations and interpretations of the text, and even Alcott’s own biography.

Chapter 1

This story starts with a floating girl, a book, and a memory. The girl and the book are in the memory, and though the battle starts much later, this is where the story starts.

Lily floated above her bed and furiously tore through the pages of her book, desperately wanting to reach the climax before dinner. As each word took hold, she was drawn further and further into the story and the world it created within her mind. She reached a particularly romantic scene and sighed as a random thought drifted across her mind. I could do that with Meredith.

This thought was startling enough to yank Lily out of her book and back into a reality where gravity decided to stop ignoring her. She crashed to the floor because she’d floated away from the bed during the last chapter. The first thing she was aware of was the book that she’d crushed under her in her flailing attempt to right herself midair. Then she became aware that her arm hurt - a lot.

Meredith dashed into the room. “I thought I heard a … are you ok?”

“Yep, totally fine,” Lily picked herself up off the floor. “I fell off the bed.”

“Fell off the bed or fell out of the air?”

Lily blushed. “The air. I was thinking something, but I can’t remember now.” She could remember perfectly well, but she did not feel inclined to share her thoughts with Meredith. “What were you doing?”

“Gardening,” Meredith was in charge of the Academy’s garden. She was the only one with a green thumb and she enjoyed being surrounded by quiet foliage.

“I shall, um, let you get back to that. Unless I can join you?”

“Sure,” Meredith did not mind the intrusion upon her space. In fact, she did not consider it intrusion at all. She and Lily complemented each other, though Lily was significantly more rambunctious, and they enjoyed gardening together. Lily couldn’t tell a carrot from cauliflower, but that didn’t matter.

The two passed an hour in near silence, broken only by the bad jokes they made up and told to each other. Lily had the relatively simple task of turning over the soil, so she didn’t need assistance. The silence between them wasn’t strained. They both felt comfortable enough that they didn’t need to fill perfectly good air with meaningless chatter.

At age 15, conversations are as varied as they are simultaneously serious and ridiculous. Opinions and values develop, dilemmas emerge, and abstract concepts must be grappled with. And imagination works at full steam, forgetting that childhood has gone, creating conversations with sentences that would confuse all but the one who spoke them.

This was true of Meredith and Lily, and sometimes the ridiculous and serious topics combined, and the girls would end up discussing the concept of ‘up’ and how the significance of ideas is determined by society as a whole while pretending to be upside down and hang from the bottom of the planet.

It is a rare thing to see a friendship that works so well as theirs did. They were complements but not synonyms, and their respective flaws were annoying, but not damaging. Lily once mentioned the concept of fate, because she thought that for them to be paired so perfectly couldn’t be chance, and Meredith agreed, but only silently.

The girls grew together and helped each other through their darkest times. There was a destructive period of two months where Meredith became obsessed with the meaningless of life and the actions we take. Lily held her when she cried, and helped her move on.

When they were both 17, Meredith asked Lily out. This was two years after Lily had had her startling thought about Meredith, but neither of them remembered that day. The memory is known only to the gods now, and us. Over the years, Meredith had taught Lily how to garden, and Lily had taught Meredith how to fly. One this particular day, the two were seated on the Academy roof, letting their conversation run its course. Meredith finished her statement and looked at Lily.

“Hey.”

“This may sound strange, but would you, possibly like to go out with me?” Lily opened her mouth, but couldn’t think of anything to say, so it hung there for a moment as Meredith continued. “I mean, I know there’s not many places we can go, because of the curfew and all, but it could still be a date, right?” Meredith started babbling, staring at the ground below her. Lily finally returned to her senses to realize that Meredith had been talking for at least two minutes, worried that Lily would reject her.

“You know what, just forget it. I’m sorry, I never meant to, but you’ve told me you’re gay, so I thought maybe. Just, I’m sorry.” Meredith stood to leave, hiding her face. Lily jumped to her feet, almost falling off the slanted tile.

“Wait!” A million thoughts ran through her head, about how Meredith shouldn’t fly down on her own, about how she’d been dreaming about this for years, about how Meredith should’ve asked sooner. All that came out of her mouth was a strangled “yes.” She swallowed. “Meredith, I’d really like to go out with you. I … I really like you,”

Meredith had been standing on the edge of the roof, ready to fly down and presumably never show her face again. “Are you sure?” Her tone betrayed her, giving voice to the doubt she felt.

Lily didn’t think about what she did next. She just ran at Meredith and hugged her tightly, knocking her off the roof in the process. Meredith panicked for a moment, but Lily calmed the winds around them and slowed their descent.

“So um, should we kiss? That seems stereotypical though, um, unless you want to …”

Meredith blushed. “Let’s save that for when it means something.”

Lily gulped and gently lowered her and Meredith to the ground. “So … dinner?”

Meredith nodded. “Dinner,” She grabbed Lily’s hand, and they ran to the Cafe, giggling like kids.

Lily lied in the dark, her cheeks red from the events of the evening. By now, the sun had set and everyone was in bed, but Lily couldn’t. She could hear Meredith snuffling in the other bed, and smiled into the dark. She flipped over onto her stomach, grabbed the pillow and squealed into it. She fell asleep imagining her and Meredith together at last.

When Lily opened her eyes, Meredith was sitting cross-legged on the end of her bed. Her head was bent over the pages of a book, her long fiery hair hanging down.

“Morning,” she yawned. Meredith looked up and smiled.

“Morning. We’ve got an Aqua later.”

Lily nodded. An Aqua was one of the tests their teachers sprung on them randomly, to test the parts of magic related to water. The magic taught at the academy was arranged by classical magic elements; water, earth, air, fire, death, ice, nature, and destiny. Air was Lily’s strong point, which was why she could fly so well. Water was not. Lily didn’t bother to ask how Meredith knew this. She’d gotten no answer for the past few years, and had just about given up.

“Do you know anything else?”

Meredith shook her head. Meredith was a girl of few words. She wasn’t shy, she just had better things to do with her thoughts than to engage in meaningless chatter.

“Frick” Lily flopped back onto her pillows. “This’ll be great,” Lily was in fact, quite competent in aquatic magic. She was one of the strongest witches of the generation and compared to some of her peers at the Academy, was stellar at it. But her weak point was water and had been for two years.

“I have an idea,” Lily sat up again. “You’re good at Aerial magic. Why not find a way to turn the water into something closer to that?”

Lily caught her brainwave instantly. “Turn to water into vapor, and use that!” Meredith smiled in response. “When did you come up with that?” Lily’s tone was grateful and inquisitive at the same time.

“I was just thinking.”

“Well, you’re a genius. C’mon, let’s not be late.”

The girls dressed; Lily in jeans and a white blouse and Meredith in a light blue dress. Then they pounded down the hallway, racing each other to the Cafe. They burst from the doors into the overcast day, Meredith in the lead. Lily spotted a rock and used it as a springboard to leap into the air, above Meredith’s head.

“No fair!” Meredith cried. She grinned and shot into the air herself, though not as gracefully. They zipped through the air, darting around each other like dragonflies. As they approached the Cafe, Lily began her descent. Meredith continued, wind whistling around her. Suddenly, she dropped like a stone. She fell through the air, until stopping herself a few feet above the roof.

Lily looked up at her, annoyed. In her opinion, flight should be respected and used properly, not as a game.

“I hate it when you do that.”

Meredith just smiled. “You love me.”

The girls walked into the Cafe and sat down by one of the windows. The Cafe had been grown by one of the Nature witches and had light walls made of tree trunks wedged together. The windows were made in conjunction between the Terra and Pyro witches, and had bright colors dying some, making art out of others. The table Lily and Meredith sat at was a dark green plant with huge leaves for the top. Meredith twirled her fingers as they sat down, and the plant sprouted red and white spider lilies.

Riane, who’d already been in the Cafe for half an hour, was not-so-subtly waiting for them to enter so she could get all the latest news. She, Lily and Meredith were good friends, although their relationship wasn’t as close as Meredith and Lily. As soon as she saw Meredith bloom the flowers, she made a beeline to their table and sat down.

“Soooo … what’s new with you two?”

“Do you know there’s an Aqua later?” Lily diverted.

“Don’t change the subject. A little birdie told me that you finally asked Meredith out,”

“Has Carl been gossiping again? And what do you mean, finally?”

“Come on! It’s been obvious since ever! Also, no, it was Tyler,” None of the birds on the property actually had names, but it had become a running joke a couple of months ago and hadn’t died since. “So? Yes or no? Is Merily a thing?”

“I’ve already told you, I prefer Lildith, and we’ll see,” Lily and Riane continued chatting for some time. Lily gradually became aware that Meredith hadn’t said anything. She turned her body to where Meredith was staring into space. “Hey, you ok?”

“I’m fine,” Meredith’s reply was directed at the wall. Lily bit her lip.

“You sure?”

“I said, so didn’t I?” Riane looked between the two of them, suddenly confused.

“I’m going to go get some food,” She stood up awkwardly and moved a couple of tables over. As she did she glanced at them a couple of times but soon lost herself in a different conversation.

“Seriously, what’s up?”

“Well, apparently, the entire Academy expects us to date, and it’s not like you bothered to correct Riane when she assumed that you asked me out!” Meredith’s outburst wasn’t loud but drew some curious glances from nearby tables. She glanced around and lowered her voice, “Isn’t this supposed to be an us thing? Why does everyone else have to be involved?”

Lily scowled. “I get that you’re a private person, ok? But what does it matter what they think? They can think what they like. They’re not involved unless you make a deal out of it.”

Meredith snorted. “Well, isn’t this a good omen,” she remarked dryly.

“You know what, fine. You’re right, they shouldn’t care. But they do. What do you expect me to do?”

Meredith softened her expression. “I wonder how Riane even knew,” she remarked. As she spoke, she twirled her fingers and the decidedly non-citrus plant that formed their table somehow produced a few oranges. She picked the miraculous plants and tossed one across the table.

Lily snatched it out of midair and smiled. “Guess we have some fans. I suppose me knocking you off a building is pretty obvious.”

“You’ve done that in the past. Doesn't mean anything,”

“Then we shall have to ask her later. For now, do you know what time the Aqua is?”

Meredith shook her head. The girls sat in silence, munching on their oranges. Once they finished, they walked outside again. Lily tried to grab a yogurt container behind Meredith’s back, using some of the Aerial magic. Meredith didn’t turn when the breeze rustled past her, but she did address Lily as she strode out of the Cafe.

“Grab me some toast,”

Lily did so, smiling sheepishly.

“You have to be less obvious.” Lily joined Meredith outside. “Also, eat less yogurt,”

“Hey, yogurt is good,” Lily protested.

“I thought you were vegan,” Meredith raised an eyebrow.

Lily scarfed down the rest of the container and vanished it in midair, transforming it into a strawberry-scented patch of air. “No proof now,”

Meredith giggled, and started walking toward one of the fields surrounding the Academy. Once they reached the field, Lily stuck out her hand and flicked her fingers. A small fountain of water sprouted from the stalks of grass. She grimaced and increased the stream to a faster pace. Once she had a large amount hovering in the air, she cut off the water and molded the water into a large bubble.

Meredith smiled, and lifted her hand toward the water, and slowly moved her arm to the left. The water followed and Lily frowned. She reached out her other hand and jerked the water away. It shot backward and came to a screeching halt. The quick stop caused some water to detach from the main bubble, and it promptly fell onto Lily’s head.

Lily shivered and lobbed the water at Meredith. Over 100 gallons of water fell through the air, and she panicked. A bolt of fire shot out of her hand, sizzling when it met the water and creating steam. The extremely hot steam rose toward the sky and Lily looked at Meredith.

“You can’t use Pyro in an Aqua,”

“I can use it to keep from getting drenched,”

“Not fair! I’m soaking,”

“I don’t need to practice raising and lowering the temperature of water,” Meredith smiled while Lily laughed for a moment.

“Fine, you win,” Lily laughed. She scrunched up her face and concentrated for a moment. Wisps of steam rose from her shirt. After a minute or two she opened her eyes and pinched her shirt. Still wet.

“Let me try,” Meredith fixed her gaze on Lily’s chocolate colored hair. The water heated into a mass of steam which lifted Lily’s hair into the air. Lily reached up and felt her — now frizzy — hair.

“Woah. You’re good at this,”

Meredith smiled modestly.

“How are you so good at this?”

Meredith’s smile became more mysterious. “Let’s just say I’ve practiced a lot.”

“Why would you bother?” Lily asked, slowing each word as she tried to comprehend Meredith's reasoning.

“I’m focusing on changing things from solids to liquids and back,”

“Like water to ice. Combining Aqua and Cryo magic?”

“Think bigger,”

“Um, glaciers?”

“You could transform anything into air, water, and earth. Anything,” Meredith stared pointedly at Lily.

“Would that include people?”

“Would I tell you?”

At that moment, Lily’s mouth dropped open. “No!”

“Yes,”

“That’s how you get around so fast and know so much about what’s happening. You turn yourself into, I dunno, a pile of dirt or some air, and then you can just listen to people! Genius,”

“I prefer the aesthetic of mist, but you know…” Meredith stopped talking when Lily punched her in the arm.

“Oh, my gods. That’s amazing,”

“Which ones?” Meredith replied. Lily stared at her.

“Which ones what?”

“Which gods,”

“Alaz’s eyes. All of them. This is monumental! Does anyone else know you can do this?” Lily asked, an intense expression transforming her features.

“Not as of yet, unless you keep yelling,”

“Fine, fine,” Lily relented. “I’m calm. I’m cool. All’s good, but still. Wow,”

Meredith smiled goofily. “Thanks. Now, your turn,” Meredith and Lily spent the morning practicing, until Lily was proficient. By then, the sun was high in the sky and it was time for the Aqua. They and other girls at the Academy congregated at the Arena, located in a field across the Academy grounds.

The Arena was separated into different sections for each of the magic types, with a general purpose area connecting the different areas. This Aqua was only for the most advanced witches, both for students at the Academy and other members of the Authorian who were seeking to raise their status/skill level.

The Authorian kept their base in the middle of the woods. It contained the Academy for new witches to train and places for the graduated members of the Authorian to live. The Academy itself contained barracks for the girls to live, the Cafe to eat, the Arena to train, and a set of classrooms to learn about Ermia, the world they lived in.

The schedule of the Academy was separated by weeks and repeated monthly. The first week was used for training and classes for the different types of magic. Then the second week was focused on fitness and combat. The girls learned self-defense and how to use a number of weapons, training them to be fit enough to fight or run if necessary. The third week centered around book studies, in subjects such as magical lore, history, and studying the different species that lived on Ermia. The remaining days of the month were used for testing the girls on what they’d learned and assessing their current skill levels. The girls were also expected to practice during the off weeks in each subject to keep their skills.

Out of the three subjects, Riane was the athletic one, Meredith the bookish one, and Lily was undoubtedly the best at Magic. Riane normally wouldn’t be at this Aqua because she wasn’t at the level of skill as Meredith and Lily. However, she’d recently shot ahead in her Aqua magic and was able to join them.

There were about ten people waiting to be tested in total. Four were part of the Academy and three older witches. All seven were wearing blue robes, indicating they’d focused their power on perfecting their Aqua magic. Riane, Lily, and Meredith were wearing the Magenta robes showing that they hadn’t chosen a focus yet.

That interesting fact was what made the three so powerful. They had about equal aptitude in each type of Magic, while all the other witches at their skill level were equals in that area but much lower in others.

In an Aqua, the participants would enter the water area of the area to test, with their peers waiting outside. While waiting, the witches were not allowed to practice so as to not interrupt the test. Lily couldn’t prepare, so she used this opportunity to ask Riane some questions. She grabbed Riane’s attention and they started chatting.

“Hey! Congrats on making it to the final Aqua,” This level of Aqua was the last one, and upon completion resulted in an Aqua Gold qualification. All the witches trying for Aqua Gold today already had earned Aqua Silver, an admirable rating itself. It usually took a while to pass each test, and make it to the next test. Meredith had been trying for Aqua Gold for a few months, and Lily for almost a year.

“Thanks,” Riane replied. “Who knows, maybe I’ll become an Aqua witch,”

“I think that’d suit you. But, more seriously, how’d you know Meredith asked me out?”

Riane pointedly started at a tree to Lily’s left and went mute. Her expression was unreadable, much to Lily’s chagrin.

“Seriously. How’d you know?”

Meredith was staring at the ground now. Lily didn’t notice.

“Were you spying on us? I’m not kidding, how’d you find out?” Her tone was aggravated, but Riane wasn’t budging. The air was tense for several seconds until Meredith broke it.

“I asked her for advice on how I should do it,” Lily looked at Meredith, and deflated.

“Oh, okay. I’m sorry, Riane,”

“It’s fine.” Riane smiled. “I just didn’t want to rat out Meredith. You’re good,”

Lily stood there awkwardly. Then the girls all flinched when a voice called out.

“Riane Yaney?” The administrator, an Aqua Gold named Zara directed her to the test.

Lily and Meredith were left standing there.

“I hope she does okay,”

“She will,” Meredith agreed. “She’s done Gold tests before. She’s a Pyro Silver, remember?”

“Yeah. So, you ready?”

“As I’ll ever be. You?”

“Gods, I hope so,” Lily took a deep breath. “I’m so done with this test. It’s been forever,”

“You were so fast moving through all the other tests. And you have a Gold in like everything else.”

“Except Eco. You wouldn’t happen to know when the next Eco is?”

“Sometime this week, but aside from that, I’ve got no idea. So you’ve got like 4 days to prepare,” Weeks were 5 days long on Ermia, and months were anywhere from 18 to 26 days long. This resulted in irregular schedules, but the number of days in each month corresponded to the god that that month was for, so it couldn’t be changed.

“I’ll do well there. I’m so close! And you are too!”

“I need Aqua, Cryo, and Destiny. Then I’ll be Gold all round,”

“You have those in the bag. Oh, gods. I’m nervous.” Lily opened her mouth to say something else, but Zara called out again.

“Meredith Wurtin?”

“Good luck!” Lily shot a thumbs up at Meredith as she walked away. They wouldn’t see each other until after Lily tested, so they’d all learn their results at the same time. She took a few deep breaths and waited as the area gradually emptied. She was the last one left, and she could feel her heart rate increasing as Zara called.

“Lily Pangin?”

Lily walked toward her, trying to contain her nerves.

“Maybe this’ll be it, huh?”

“Hopefully,” Lily replied. She entered the water area and took stock. It was a patch of dirt and nothing else. In the lower levels, they’d have ponds to work with, but here there was nothing. In the Gold Aqua, each of the witches had to extract as much water as possible from the ground, and control it as well as possible, performing tasks as directed by the administrator. In this case, Zara.

This time, Lily didn’t wait for Zara’s instructions and simply raised her hands to the sky. All the water contained within the dirt flew up into the air in tiny streams creating what could only be described as an inverse bubble the size of a house. This was normal for Lily, but this time, she cooled the air around the bubble, adding to its size. It grew so that it was larger than a barn.

Lily shifted her hands so the water formed a flat disc, then a thin cylinder sticking into the sky, and finally a perfect square.

Zara raised her eyebrow. “Can you hollow it?” Lily gradually shifted the water from the center to the outside of the bubble, forming another sphere. “Rain?”

Lily let drops of water fall, bit by bit. This was her hardest trick. Usually, she’d drop too much water, get flustered, and drop it all. She focused all her energy on keeping the swirling mass in the air. She didn’t notice when Zara told her to stop until Zara tapped her on the shoulder.

“Good. Can you make it a wave and lift yourself up?”

Lily moved the water over her head, creating an impressive waterfall that scooped her up and shot her into the air. For a brief moment, she lost control. She gritted her teeth and regained power over the water. She balanced on a column of water that sloshed around Zara’s feet and looked down.

“Shoot the targets!” Zara yelled up, and pointed at some trees that’d been painted yellow. The paint was special in that the more waterlogged it got, the darker the color. This exercise would’ve been easy for Lily, but she was unused to the volume of water she was dealing with. Her first shot splashed the tree she was aiming for but also the two next to it, and she dropped two feet as her support disappeared.

Her next blast was more controlled, but she was still unprepared for the drop, this time closer to 5 feet as the tree turned jet black immediately.

“Keep going!” Zara encouraged.

Lily yelled and shot each of the remaining trees perfectly until the final tree was dark as night. She tried to lower herself down to ground level, but in one terrifying, heart-stopping moment the water finally rebelled against her and she fell the remaining distance to the ground. She hit the water and the world went black.

EVENT 021 - HOGSMEADE OLYMPICS

With everything going on, local leaders and authorities decided that a community event to cheer everyone up and bring us all together. After much discussion, an event quite like the Olympics was put together.

Time to get your team spirit and competitive attitudes in check because there will be teams and there will be events and there will be a winner !! It’s important to remember that we’re all in this together and no matter how bad things seem to get, tomorrow is another day. As the late, great Albus Dumbledore said:

❝ Happiness can be found in even the darkest of times, but only to those who remember to turn on the light. ❞

This is not a time constrained event per se. All the events will take place throughout August and possibly into the first week of September. You will be allowed to continue and begin nonevent threads throughout but each activity/event should be acknowledged and incorporated into conversations, particularly when your character and their team are involved.

This is not an optional event. All characters will be taking part and have been split into teams (which you will find under the read more below). We encourage all muns to branch out and create new friendships/connections with each other through the team they’re in and the teams they’re playing against. A tournament board will be posted shortly, showing the first round of events/activities and we will be asking muns to vote in our OOC discord chat on the winners of each event sporadically throughout the month. There will also be a few extra awards such as team spirit, sportsmanship and more at an awards ceremony at the end of the month.

Please use the tag #sdhqolympics1 for all threads that are meant for the teams taking part in events/activities. If it’s a closed thread for certain characters taking part, be sure to tag their blogs. Also if you want a specific plot where your character gets injured (minor injuries only) or helps the team win / causes them to lose, please run it past the main as soon as possible.

Zodiac Sign: Aries. I’m also the year of the Snake.

Height: 5’1

Languages: English and some French. I’m very out of practice but I used to be able to hold casual conversations.

Nationality: American. Born and raised in Nebraska.

Favorite Season: Fall, like every white girl, and Spring cause of all the flowers in my grandma’s garden.

Favorite Flower: I absolutely love water lilies, lilac, and columbine.

Favorite Scent: A little weird, but I absolutely love the smell of yeasty bread dough. My sense of smell is kinda shot now cause I burn so much incense, but my favorites are China Rain and Nag Champa.

Favorite Color: A very specific dark blue that only comes out after sunset, at the last moment of color in the sky.

Favorite Animal: I fucking love ground squirrels. They’re so little and fat and just cute as can be. They remind me of my fat chihuahua.

Favorite Fictional Character(s): I’m always an absolute slut for Eskel from the Witcher, Billy Butcher from The Boys, and Raoul Silva from the Bond movie Skyfall.

Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate: Absoluetly hate coffee. Nasty. I like hot coco but I won’t actively seek it out. I prefer cold tea, like Arizona and bubble tea. I know, I’m an abomination.

Average Sleep Hours: Depends greatly, but I usually go to bed anywhere from midnight to 4am and wake up at noon or just before if I don’t have to work.

Cat or Dog Person: Dog person to the max. I used to hate cats but I’m warming up to them with the help of my best friend’s five. I have one old ass black lab named Molly, a Chihuahua named Sis, and a Maltese named Tater, as well as a Cockatiel named Squeakers and a Quaker Parrot named Willoughby.

Dream Trip: I’d love to go back to Zion National Park in the early Spring. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been and it was very much worth the soaking I got while hiking in the rain.

Blog Established: Either late 2018 or early 2019.

Followers: I don’t get many likes/comments/reblogs (mostly because I don’t post original stuff) but my girlfriend likes some stuff occasionally. I don’t know why anyone follows me tbh 😂

Random Fact: My absolute favorite band is a Japanese visual kei heavy metal band called The GazettE. I don’t speak Japanese at all but I like to sing along regardless.

DrSilverfish S14 Meta Masterpost

Well, what a wild ride S14 has been. An extremely rich season for meta, and one of the best seasons of the show, ever (in my view, YMMV). It’s been a blast sharing it with all of you, week by week, on the hoof. Thanks for all the discussion, shared sleuthing and musing, gifs, art, fic, meta and more.

And thanks also to all the readers of, and commenters on, this blog. Reading the tags and replies on Tumblr is still one of the best things.

High points? The writers’ room’s use of mythology (Greek, Biblical, folktale) this season has been rich and satisfying, but in particular their borrowing of Jung’s psychological drama of the encounter between the Self and the Shadow-self, and his interpretation of alchemical writing as representative of the journey of the psyche towards self-integration (for the alchemists, the journey of the soul to God) has been really beautifully crafted.

Also, all the call-backs to previous seasons and episodes of the show, as part of Dabb’s Ouroboros narrative, used to shed light both on the past and the present; even down to matching the call backs numerologically for more snake-swallowing-its-own-tail symmetry.

Stand out episode for me was 14x14 Ouroboros. Steve Yockey is a kick-ass writer and a master of subtext. Noah Ophis the Queer Gorgon was not only a fabulous queer villain but the call-back to Nick the Siren and 4x14 Sex and Violence really reflected on and demonstrated the show’s evolution, as we near the end of the spiral (it’s ages since any female characters have been called a “bitch” or a “whore” for one thing - phew).

Also a shout-out to Meredith Glynn’s 14x08 Byzantium for its lovely re-encounter re Castiel’s relationship to Heaven, his heart-crushing (and uber fairy-tale romantic) deal with The Shadow, as well as for revisiting the awesome Lily Sunder and adding Anubis to the SPN God-machine!

And to Davy Perez 14x11 Damaged Goods for the most subtextually obvious but also tragically heart-breaking, reference to the Ma’lak box as the closet, thanks to Dean showering sparks all over Donna’s 1970s cowboy porn poster collection whilst building it.

Andrew Dabb and Meredith Glynn’s 14x13 Lebanon was excellent too; lovely script, outstanding performances from the original Winchester family, a beautiful little side-meditation on who Castiel would have been, if he hadn’t raised Dean from perdition, and some more alchemical symbolism via the “pearl of great price” (AKA the Philosopher’s Stone).

Meghan Fitzmartin and Yockey’s 14x15 Peace of Mind, was also stand-out, for its biting satire both of MAGA and Heaven, its hilarious whammied Sam (truly one of Jared’s great performances, up there with his Lucifer in The End) and its lashings of queer subtext (from Dean’s fascination with, and anxiety about, the “snake”, to Castiel’s mirrored heavy improv involvement with Sunny’s dick-worshiping erotic epistles).

Finally, Dabb and Sgriccia delivered a gorgeously shot, and epic, finale in 14x20 Moriah, the culmination of Dean’s long and painful encounter with the internalised Ghost of John Winchester in his psyche, as he faced, Ouroboros style, a yellow-eyed “monster” who had (apparently) killed Mary Winchester (again) and THE Father, ordering him to continue his own father’s revenge cycle. Chuck Shurley, avatar of God, ultimate dead-beat Dad and author of the SPN multi-verse, is set up to be the meta villain for the final season, as his characters struggle for true free will.

Here’s hoping MIRROR UNIVERSE and all those zombies busting out of their graves are indeed a giant neon metaphor for the culminating revenge of SPN’s eternal queer subtext.

Low-point of the season; re-fridging Mary Winchester as part of the Ouroboros narrative, even though Glynn and Berens handled her “death” episodes (14x17 and 14x18) beautifully. Re-staging the drama of Azazel, fathers and sons, as part of the story spiral was, of course, irresistable, and profound for our male hero characters; I get it. But, as I am still convinced this is a fake-out, Mary is not really dead, and we will see her again (see my meta from 14x17 onwards) I’m willing to wait before I write my final meta on the show’s relationship to the feminine principle (spoiler alert, a load of suckage along the way, with the possiblity for a, somewhat contingent, writers’ room redemption arc!). I am hoping both Amara, as the feminine God-principle, and Mary (they are already fundamentally linked) will return in the culmination of the narrative. Symbolically, even given this is, indelibly, a narrative about men and the bonds between them, that return of/ integration with the feminine would be the alchemical and Jungian culmination of the journey, and I’m hoping that’s what Dabb is going deliver; via Jack (Hermes/ Mercury) as the mediating principle.

As I’m sure you all are, I’m in equal measure gutted and excited that S15 is to be the final turn of the spiral.

Look forward to sharing all the highs and the lows, as TFW go up against Chuck Almighty himself, with Death, The Empty and metaphysical key Jack Kline Novak Winchester in the mix.

y’know the one thing I hated while I was doing my arts degree, and still hate after having graduated from it, is the condescending statement/belief from people that “oh why didn’t you just do a more useful degree like maths or science???? and not your useless bullshit mickey mouse arts degree, which was never intended to give anyone jobs outside of teaching, anyway!” or some other horrendous bullshit, such as: “why didn’t you just stay with communication & media studies and complete the marketing & PR major???? you would’ve had a job after all of the unpaid internships you do throughout the course!” or whatever. (media and communications is abbreviated to m&cs further down in this post, just an fyi).

but, meredith. do you know that even people with science & maths degrees struggle to find meaningful work that’s related to their degrees? do you know that some of those people will turn to teaching anyway just because they feel like there’s nothing else that they can do??? do you know that some people (mainly me and probably quite a few others) just can’t handle maths past like idk year 6 level??? I would’ve been completely and utterly fucked if I even tried to set foot in first year uni science or maths subjects. even though some of the content did interest me.... (also there’s the fact that my handwriting wasn’t good enough for diagrams etc etc in maths & science- but that’s a whole other topic not for this post).

like I had to totally skip out of psychology/sociology and even the PR major, bc they required you to do statistics subjects.... where no matter what level of study I would’ve/could’ve done for those subjects, i would’ve still failed them spectacularly because my mind really struggles with processing and working with numbers. but that’s besides the point.

hey earl, do you know some people simply do not suit particular fields of “real world” or “practical” study areas like business subjects? trust me. I tried that one sem of marketing 101 and intro to management/ business communications in first year. and you know what I found? that my mind just could not take the complete and utter dryness of the content of marketing theory and, again, numbers. and that’s despite the earnest encouragement of my tutor, who thought I had a knack for marketing. i literally almost fucking died in that business communications subject... even though the lecturer seemed to like me as well. but as i thought further ahead into my degree in comms & media, i dreaded it. I absolutely fucking dreaded it. the PR stuff sounded as equally dry & boring (besides the point that every project was group work lmao) and so did upper level marketing subs in advertising/marketing strategy/various fields of marketing etc etc. i couldn’t stomach that lmao. and besides the point, the analysing of media just bored the fuck out of me too, for some reason. I just didn’t like the subject. hell, even my advanced diploma in marketing from business college was a fucking hard slog for me.

but when i sat in my english, philosophy, (kind sorta) history and -further down the track- creative writing subjects.... I fucking loved them. I was writing like I’d always wanted to. okay yes I did get pretty dismal marks in most of my philosophy and english exams or assignments. but I don’t fucking care. I was there doing what my mind was built for. if id tried another business subject, like intro to economics or even gone back to redo that “intro to management”/“business communications” (or whatever it was called) as an elective/as electives, i probably would’ve dropped out of either of them in the first 2 weeks. whenever i read those subject descriptions, they literally put me to sleep.

also, for the media and comms point. do you know that there’s loads of media & comms students that don’t get jobs because there’s just such a HUGE intake of students in those courses??? do you know that that the most popualr field in that degree stream (at least when I started that degree at my local home uni in 2015) was journalism & professional writing??? where literally EVERYONE was aiming to be a journalist????

I was one of the very, very few people when I began in media and comms, to outwardly say that she was there to do marketing or maybe the marketing & PR double major.... and everyone looked at me as if I was insane. “why don’t you want to be a journalist? I think journalism is so cool and that I’m more likely to get a job in that than you are in marketing or PR. you actually engage with real people in journalism and do meaningful stuff with the community!” was one of the utterly dumb responses I sometimes got from people in that course, when I told them the above. but you know what kelsey, or, trent? neither one or any of us are “more likely” to get jobs in media & comms... when you’re both competing against people with “proper” straight journalism degrees who might have more media experience than you- if you didn’t do an internship or do some uni newsroom/magazine or whatever.... or maybe more streamlined (if that’s the right word) media &comms degrees.... as well as generally competing against each other, in the same field, for the fucking same exact jobs. while im competing against commerce students doing marketing and PR and people doing the PR & marketing major in m&cs.

also in relation to the above, doing multiple unpaid or even severely underpaid internships in journalism, or even marketing, probably won’t fucking secure your chance of getting a bloody job, adam. just shut the fuck up. those internships may have helped you. but they most likely won’t help most people, theresa. because there’s only a tiny freakin chance that the place that they worked for will actually give them a guranteed job at the end of their internship’s timeframe or at the end of their whole degree. it’s a fucking scam lmao.

and plus, (not to be as rude as you were to me).... but why the FUCK would you want to go into journalism.... when it’s been debased so fucking much by media outlets like buzzfeed; writing nothing but clickbait bullshit listicles.... and is polluted by internet virality.... so much so, that more than half of the people my course had the career goal of being a viral youtuber or an instagram influencer???? like i’m sorry. this is a dumb asf course, no matter the field you’ve chosen to study.... and there’s no way that a single one of you will be a successful viral youtuber or an instagram influencer???? what on fucking earth led you to believe that????

like no offence. but there’ll only be a lucky, lucky, lucky few who get to be the next jennamarbles, ray william johnson, pewdiepie, lily singh, tanya hennessy, jeffree star, james charles, etc etc.... or hell, even friendlyjordies (if you want some satire & politics). and for instagrammers.... idek know them. someone list some instagrammers lmao. but my point still stands.

being an influencer or youtuber- both with huge followings- is a fucking pipe dream- as much as me being a hugely successful author is. it only goes to the insanely lucky, lucky few who have the right connections and the right digital savviness/finesse to grow to be uber successful.... or who started super early, before it was even considered a job title (like jenna mourey/marbles and ray william johnson listed above, and several others not listed who have big fan followings on here) and eventually grew to be the first original titans of the youtuber job title.

or again, they already have some type of other successful media career (like tanya hennessy is an aussie radio announcer. jeffree star had a short lived myspace music career in the late 000s mostly, and made cameos in emo music videos and LA ink at the time also, for example) so that they can successfully fund their youtube channels and/or instagrams as side projects or whatever, as part of their media portfolio.... and they also know how to engage and grow follower bases etc. because they already have an existing one. so it’s twice as easy for them.

tbh i actually entered the m&cs course bc of my use of this hellsite and all the weird trends it had and stuff.... but I eventually got over that as I realised that I just did NOT fit into that field of study. I realised I was too shy... and I also just hated the fact that I had to learn how to use twitter and wordpress and probably eventually snapchat & instagram 😂

i had also gotten sick of follower counts and “growing a following”- considering that by 2015, I’d hit over 3,000 followers on here, I think.... and I realised just what energy and time it took to build this blog.... and my followers.... that I just didn’t have the energy to expend on other platforms for the same thing lmao. like it seemed like more wasted time. I was tired. in addition to that, i also realised that i didn’t want to waste my whole fucking career on the internet worrying over a business’s/company’s multiple corporate social media channel follower counts and image etc.... when i’d done enough of that for myself on this hellsite lmao. doing that stuff with other students in the m&cs course seemed fake asf, especially when it came to giving feedback comments etc lol.

but do you know that one place where you don’t have to give a flying fuck about followers, post views/comments, and blog views? philosophy and english. lmao 😅. no one gives a fuck what you say. unless, of course, you have the evidence and the force of argument to back your pov up. that’s what I was about and am still about. I loved reading and analysing the many books I had to read (contrary to the complaint posts that I made on here lmao)- whereas learning about media and who owned what and how media is manufactured- just made my brain freeze. and although I didn’t do my readings in philosophy (lmao)- i enjoyed a good bulk of the content I had and the issues it involved. doing media & journalism subjects in the m&cs degree, on the other hand, terrified me, bc it meant I had to get in front of a camera and speak- which also scared me bc i look & sound terrible on camera lmao 😂. but I didn’t have to do that almost throughout the entirety of my arts degree (im obvs not counting class presentations in this lol). but do you get my point???

and also the teaching comment. don’t get me wrong, i know a good bunch of people go into teaching after their arts degrees... including many of my friends; and a load of the people I was in my arts degree with. but that is mainly because with other degrees like journalism or media & comms or whatever other fields that they overload into uni arts departments- have taken our job titles away, in a sense....

so, then you’re practically forced to either go into teaching, or go into something outside of your expertise; like idek human resources management/a MBA via a masters.... or, again into something like librarianship via postgrad study- so, that for the love of fucking god- you have a job title to whack next to your name-!!!-instead of just “arts graduate” or “english major” or “philosopher” that all mean fuck all. and that’s because those labels sound vague, unhelpful, undefined and useless; as that’s opposed to something like “teacher” or “librarian” or even “information specialist”. all those titles/labels sound defined, and have actual useful concrete skills: like coding, database creation and maitenance & information retrieval (amongst other things), for a librarian/an information specialist, for example. these skills are then translated into something that you can physically demonstrate to people.... unlike with philosophy and english where people perceive that it’s just “all in your head” and “doesn’t produce anything worthwhile” bc of your very obvious skills that everyone has of communication and writing. like idk. anyway.

268 Directors and the end of the blog

This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years.

This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices.

It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name.

I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning.

I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.
