Hyoma Chigiri's affinity for music is not just a casual interest; it's a deep-seated passion that permeates every aspect of his life. He often finds himself echoing the sentiment, "Music is life," emphasizing the profound impact melodies and lyrics have on his soul. With a discerning ear for soul-stirring beats and melodious harmonies, Hyoma gravitates towards the emotive rhythms of R&B and the laid-back grooves of Reggae, which resonate with his innermost being. These genres serve as his sonic sanctuary, providing solace in times of joy and comfort in moments of solitude.
In a stroke of serendipity, Hyoma's musical journey intersects with that of Y/N L/N, the enigmatic artist known to the world as Destiny. Through her masterful compositions, Destiny effortlessly blends the soulful essence of R&B with the infectious energy of Reggae, creating a musical landscape that speaks directly to Hyoma's heart. Each note, each lyric, becomes a conduit for their shared emotions, forging a bond between artist and listener that transcends the boundaries of sound.
Yet, while Hyoma finds solace in the melodic realms of music, Destiny's passion lies elsewhere – on the vibrant turf of the football field. For her, football isn't just a sport; it's a way of life, a source of unyielding exhilaration and boundless excitement. With an unwavering fervor, Destiny proclaims, "Football is life," her eyes alight with the fire of competition and camaraderie.
But what truly ignites Destiny's spirit is the sight of players endowed with extraordinary speed, sprinting across the field with unparalleled grace and agility. These fleet-footed athletes embody the essence of her love for the game, pushing the boundaries of physical prowess with each lightning-fast maneuver. And among them stands Hyoma Chigiri, a shining beacon of athleticism and determination.
Hyoma's exceptional speed and nimble footwork make him a formidable force on the football field, capturing Destiny's admiration and earning him a place in her heart. As she watches him dart past defenders with effortless ease, she can't help but marvel at the synchronicity of their passions – his for music, hers for football – intertwining in a beautiful dance of fate.
In the grand tapestry of life, Hyoma and Destiny's shared interests serve as threads that weave their destinies together, forming a bond that transcends mere coincidence. Through the harmonious fusion of artistry and athleticism, they discover a profound connection that resonates with the rhythm of their souls, uniting them in a symphony of passion and purpose. And as they navigate the highs and lows of their respective journeys, they find solace in the knowledge that, in each other, they have found a kindred spirit – a companion on the path less traveled, guided by the melody of their shared dreams.

Today's compilation:
The Wild Bunch 1995 Reggae / Roots Reggae / Rocksteady / Dub
First off, let me just say that I am in total awe of this crop of reggae instrumentals from the 60s and 70s here. So much music since has come with so much more fuss and technological advancements, and yet an unscalable pile of the stuff that came out after this doesn't seem to come close to how good a bunch of these simple tunes still are. In a broad sense, all these songs' formulas are pretty simple, but they really still just manage to click so damn well 😌.
From this comp's liner notes:
During the past eight years, Trojan have pioneered the 'Revival' Reggae scene. Our re-issue programme has preserved some of the best vocals ever recorded in Jamaica, but with the emphasis being placed on some of the island's many talented singers in recent years, the musicians have tended to be ignored. This current release reverses that trend by turning the spotlight onto the 'players of instruments', and in so doing we pay tribute to Kingston's legendary session men.
Now, because nearly all of these are straight-up instrumentals, they all pretty much operate in the same way, and each of them seem to have one thing in common that ends up either making or breaking the tune: the lead instrument. Because reggae riddims are inherently repetitive and steady, if left alone, they will naturally get stale. So, it takes a good melody of some kind to be laid atop that riddim in order to lend the song some much needed variety. And in a whole lot of these 27 tunes, that ends up coming to remarkable fruition.
It's hard to even really know where to begin with this album since there's so much goodness to be found within it, but the thick, whistle-ringing improvisational organ of Lloyd Charmer's "Ling Tong Ting" is an absolutely terrific place to start. Then the JJ All Stars get topsy-turvy with the audio channels on "Memphis Underground," by sending the melodic leads exclusively and *very prominently* through the left, and 90% of the riddim through the right; Herman Marquis' "Tom's Version," whose intro I'm pretty sure I've heard sampled in at least one hip hop tune before (Wu-Tang, maybe? It's honestly driving me crazy that I can't put my finger on it), then follows by doing a wonderful job of harmonizing its organ and trumpet, yielding this fully warm and satisfying haze; the legendary Augustus Pablo, who singlehandedly managed to transform the melodica from a mere plaything for children into an instrument with serious gravitas, shows why on a rootsy piece of dub called "Great Pablo;" and then towards the end, we get a bit of a surprise with a piece of gospel-reggae that's actually not an instrumental: the Harry J All Stars "Holy Moses," which is aided by a small set of female singers whose deployment of soul harmonies reminds of the backup singing that can be found on a bunch of Bob Marley hits.
But the closing title tune by the Music Doctors may be both the most remarkable and most fun track of them all, for the simple fact that it uniquely trades its leads between—not things like guitars, horns, and organs—but just bass and drums. And the bassist just seems to carefreely play this laid-back and very recognizable piece of melody from The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back;" it's so good!
So, a phenomenal collection of rare Jamaican reggae instrumental classics here, from the genre's premier label itself, Trojan. Yesterday, I posted about an excellent metal cassette from 1985 that's also called The Wild Bunch, and given how good that that album was, I really didn't think that this one could outdo it, but it very much did!

"I think this will be the last ‘traditional’ Within Temptation record": Sharon Den Adel and Robert Westerholt on how war, AI and experimentation has shaped their new album Bleed Out
Within Temptation's Sharon Den Adel and Robert Westerholt say new album Bleed Out may be their most ambitious yet.
Tumblr media
More than 25 years since they helped define symphonic metal, Within Temptation are still pushing boundaries creatively. 2019’s Resistincorporated more electronic elements into their sound, but a series of stand-alone singles has suggested the band are pushing the boat out even more with its follow-up.
We caught up with vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist/vocalist Robert Westerholt to find out what lies in store…
You’ve called this album the ‘start of a new era’. What does that mean?
Sharon: “We’re trying to find a new sound for ourselves. And we’re really interested in all these radical changes happening in the world right now and how they affect our lives, like with AI.”
Robert: “We’re freer than we’ve ever been, and really enjoying experimenting. It’s also a new era in the styles of music we’re exploring.”
As artists, how does AI affect you? Have you tried to see if a programme could write a Within Temptation song?
Sharon: “We haven’t used AI at all when it comes to the music, but we used it a little for visualising things like the album cover and videos.” Robert: “I can’t imagine ever using it when we’re songwriting. It’s very interesting, though! It feels like a complete revolution, not only artistically, but in terms of what this AI could represent technologically. Scary, but exciting!” Sharon: “It’s an opportunity to find new methods of creativity. We’ve still used a designer for our cover so we’re not cutting out people, but we’ve used this technology to better express what we wanted and make it easier for them.”
What’s the biggest surprise for fans on this new album?
Sharon: “Every time you listen to the songs, you’ll discover more. There’s lots of layers of diversity in the songs.”
Robert: “We’ve found a real love for the album [format] again and we’re trying to tell a story.”
Is there a concept behind the lyrics?
Robert: “There are a few themes rather than one concept, some being quite peripheral. Socially, we’re taking note of things happening in the world. The war in Ukraine had a big impact on us – we’ve played there quite a few times and felt like we got to know fans there, but also it’s really not far from our doors.”
Sharon: “And if it doesn’t stop in Ukraine, it could be at our doorsteps a year later. There are lots of sports personalities we used to follow on social media from the Ukraine, like Alexandr Dolgopolov, a great tennis player who’s become a soldier to fight for his home. Ultimately, as musicians we tell stories and there are so many stories now coming at us.”
Are there any artists or records that have directly inspired the album?
Robert: “I’ve found myself going for bands who go through these drastic, radical things in their songs. Songs with a lot of contrast are more exciting, more inspiring. I want to hear a record that can go from reggae to black metal!”
Sharon: “Drastic change is something we want to try. Who knows what kind of cool things could come out of that?”
How representative is single Wireless of the rest of the album?
Robert: “There are a lot of elements we’re using in the new album on that track, melodically and rhythmically. Parts of this record are ultra-heavy. The contrast across the record helps those parts feel even heavier, too. There is even a bit of djenty stuff in there.”
Sharon: “It’s the first time we’ve been able to go in and make adjustments to tiny bits within a song. We’ve tried in the past, but this feels like we’ve found a good method for getting those parts to fit together properly. I think this will be the last ‘traditional’ WT record.”
Robert: “Every fucking metal band says ‘This is our heaviest album’, but for us, this is our most exciting album.”
Bleed Out is due October 20 via Force Music

The White Blinds - PRESHEATECHA! - another organ trio I've just now heard of
Since their debut LP in 2018, The White Blinds have been steadily making a mark on the soul-jazz scene by consistently offering a unique style to the classic organ trio format. Building on that foundation, The White Blinds proudly announce their sophomore LP "PRESHEATECHA!" (pronounced pre-she-ate-cha), featuring ten original compositions stretching out even further to blend the familiar elements of soul-jazz with funk, Latin, and reggae undertones. From the body movin' and hip-shaking single "Cal High" to the Jackie Metoo-inspired "Struttin,'' rounded out with the Chester Thompson'esque organ-driven "Bay To L.A.," this LP showcases both strong songwriting and tasteful musicianship from start to finish. With the signature open drum tones of Michael Duffy to the gritty guitar stylings of Matt Hornbeck rounded out with the low-end and soaring melodic passages of organist Carey Frank, The White Blinds hold their own in the ever-evolving world of what it means to be an organ trio. "PRESHEATECHA!" is a step forward, pushing the limits of a group whose music can best be described as instrumental soul-jazz with a backdrop of Los Angeles flair. All songs written by Michael Duffy, Matt Hornbeck, and David M Celia.

You were looking for metal recs if i remember correctly? I procrastinated by making a list of fav albums for you:
Jinjer - Wallflowers. Female-fronted metalcore band from Ukraine, djent rhythms and reggae influences for an eclectic and quite addictive sound. Everyone in that band is virtuoso
Unleash the Archers - Apex. Female-fronted power metal band from Canada that sings about ancient goddesses of war awakening and so on. Best of the genre imo, glorious, electric powerhouse of a band
Rise Against - The Black Market. Look you probably know them already, punk-rock/hardcore from the USA, but still worth pointing out. Very political and poetical lyrics, they mean so much to me, and that's an extremely good album
Insomnium - Winter's Gate, concept album by a Swedish melodic death metal band. 42 min of icy wilderness, beautiful and entrancing like the northern lights
Gojira - Fortitude. French Death metal. Best word to describe their gorgeous sound is "intense". There's a reason these guys are considered one of the best metal bands of the century. Also lots of ecological and social messaging.
Van Canto - Break The Silence. Ever heard of A-Cappela metal? Now you have. Have fun. (Also start with "Voice Number 7" bc <3 <3 <3)
Draconian - A Rose for the Apocalypse. Doom/gothic metal band from Sweden with a beauty & the beast type singing, very atmospheric and intense
Kvelertak - Meir. Norwegian, extra energetic black metal, try Bruanne Brenn to get you started. Pure gold.
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - Samurai. This is some pretty silly, high-energy heavy metal from Germany. Good fun.
Oh and last but not least: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata. No spoilers on this one, just … check it out.
enjoy :)
This is absolutely incredible, thank you so much!! The only band here I've heard of is Rise Against, which I absolutely love, so I'm really looking forward to the others. They sound amazing and I can't wait to listen!

Bauhaus v Buck-Tick
Originally written as an addendum to this great post but it got so long it might as well have its own post.
As much as I keep saying, "I wish I had that deep, decades-long history with Buck-Tick", I do have that ancient connection with Bauhaus / Love and Rockets - I spent a significant part of the 80s obsessively watching Shadow of Light, Archive and The Haunted Fishtank (gee, wonder where Mr. Imai got that word from?)
The first thing that drew me to BT, when I discovered them off an "old Visual Kei" playlist - was that, where other VK / J-rock bands seemed to have Metal as the fundamental building block of their DNA, BT had Bauhaus. (And it's interesting how both bands have such a strange relationship to the genres they spawned - Bauhaus invented Goth as we know it, but very few Goth bands actually sound like Bauhaus - ditto BT and VK.)
But here's the thing: when I went to write this post, I could think of half a dozen BT songs, where I thought "OMG, this is a direct rip of Bauhaus" - but when I went back to the Bauhaus song I thought it imitated to compare them? The BT song was clearly inspired by Bauhaus, I could hear elements of the composition, in particular the visceral, noise-based, non-technical, abuse-the-guitar sound pervert style of Daniel Ash. Bauhaus, inspired by dub reggae and funk, flipped the script around the role of the guitars - in Bauhaus, the bass was the most prominent element, carrying both the groove and the melody, leaving the guitar to occupy a semi-percussion, semi-atmospheric role. In many BT songs, the bass drives the melodic structure, while Hide creates atmospheric waves of sound and Imai punctuates the rhythm with discordant squiggles of noise, playing against what the others are doing. The effect is electric! But it's very Bauhausian.
But again, I can't ever find a Bauhaus song that sounds exactly like what they've done - I can only point out the elements they've lifted and very cleverly repurposed and re-positioned.
Let's start with an early track, Iconoclasm:
youtube
Notice how it starts with a discordant, alarm-like guitar siren before the sped-up disco bass joins in? Once the rhythm section get going, it's clear that Imai's siren-guitar guitar is playing against the grain of tight unit of Toll, Yuta and Hide's funk groove. And then the surreal lyrics are strung out over the top in long disjointed segments that form yet another complex interplay with the drums.
Now let's listen to Bauhaus:
-starts with a discordant guitar siren -sped-up funk and bass kick in -surreal strings of lyrics glazed over the top in disjointed segments
youtube
They're not even remotely the same song - different chords, different melody - but the building blocks are the same, and they've been assembled in an almost identical arrangement. Other Bauhaus songs that clearly informed this era of BT include the frenetic groove of St Vitus Dance and the withering Small Talk Stinks. (This influence is even more clear in the studio version of Iconoclasm, where you can hear them lift the background voices and double-vocals.)
Did Imai stop his pilfering when they went Cyberpunk? NO, OF COURSE NOT
youtube
Now come on, Kunstmull, this sounds nothing like Bauhaus, right? This is much heavier, more doom, more low end.
RONG!
Listen to what Imai is doing the way he's playing, syncopated against the rhythm section with that weird, repetitive, OCD tick-tick tick-SCREE scratch that makes the song so compulsive.
Where have we heard that sound before? Hmmm...
youtube
Daniel Ash's rhythm is ever so slightly different - it's SCREE-tick tick tick, but it's syncopated against the rhythm section in exactly the same way. (Also watch out for the gratuitous theremin noises in the background, LOL, Mr. Imai has never used that trick either, has he?)
Obviously the arrangement and feel of Of Lilies And Remains is very different from the BT track - BT are much heavier, much darker, much more intense... oh, kind of like Stigmata Martyr (where Ash is showing how he makes the guitar-string-scratch noise)!
It just shows how creative and how original BT are, that Imai can lift something so distinctive and easily recognisable as Ash's riff, and yet make it wholly their own.
One more and I'll stop I promise, though I could do this all day. This was one of the first BT songs I ever heard, and it stopped me in my tracks, how familiar the arrangement sounded. (And I can't even blame Imai for this - it's a Hide song!)
I know, OK, it's just backwards reverb on the vocals, in particular the little breaths at the end of the chorus (first heard about 1:30) that makes it sound like that?
youtube
Where have we heard this effect before?
Well, this is one of my all-time fave Bauhaus tracks (and videos - I cannot tell you how many times I watched this as a teenager, and did silly cosplays intently watching lightbulbs in sunglasses and a grey suit) - listen to the backwards reverb on Murphy's voice during the bridge (about 2:20) and tell me teenage Hide didn't partake of this as deeply as I did.
youtube
It's even more pronounced on the dub version of the track, where you can hear how they did the effect in isolation.
I could do this all day!
Now I want to be clear - I am not accusing the band of plagiarism! (Anyway - Talent borrows; Genius steals - and Buck-Tick are clearly on the side of Genius here!) Mostly I'm in awe at their magpie inventiveness, the way they are able to invoke the style, the spirit and the atmosphere of the older Northampton band without ever descending into parody or plagiarism. You can hear that they never sound exactly like Bauhaus - they always sound like Buck-Tick.
But the Homage is very clever, and very appreciated by those who know.
