Joined a friendo in doing an online module class situation for medieval calligraphy because he was sitting next to me at the table and demanded I get in on the action. I was explaining the intricacies and foibles of calligraphing as a leftie, but sometimes when a delightful human keeps thrusting a goose quill pen at you and insisting you have a good time, you just relent and do it.
And when you finish your janky alphabet practice and they tell you, "Now make something silly!" Well... you remember that they are the reason you were able to watch Theeeee Karate Kid Part 3 and meet Terry Roundhouse Caperscheme Silver. And you remind THEM that Cobra Kai never dies.

(It had exactly the desired effect of eliciting ebullient, near-falling laughter. Crane-kicked their heart right in the face with friendship. Point: me. 😂🏆😁🥰)

Part of the "difficulty" copying medieval scribes is the limits imposed upon them by their quills. Ergo, I bought 100 goose feathers and cut a bunch of quills.
The ones on the left side are messed up. Two of them cracked in the wrong places, so the ink doesn't flow right and the tips aren't firm enough anymore. You can also see the one in the front is cut a little lopsided. The third is cut alright, but the pen itself is too soft so I can't write with it.
The other three I'm proud of! They all work well, although I need to experiment more with the angle I'm cutting on the pens since that affects ink flow. Based on references online, these are a bit too "steep" for Latin alphabets, i.e. the ink likely flows a bit too fast.
I stripped the feathers of their barbs (the feathery bits) because that was custom in the Middle Ages. After the Middle Ages, it was popular to leave a tuft of barbs at the tip, but no scribes ever left their quills fully barbed (i.e. the way you'd see in films like Harry Potter) since it impedes writing.

more calligraphy! both i and my sister (@mxmalvolio) worked on this medieval-manuscript-inspired page. i did the calligraphy, the capital letters, and the drop capital "I" as well as the outlines for the borders. she did the paintings all in the borders, all the miniatures, and the figure inside the drop cap.
for context, the text is an abridged version of "The Legionnaire's Lament", a song by the Decemberists.

Latest completed custom ordered leather journals. Personally, I prefer aging because it gives better contrast. But this time, journals are in a natural leather color tone.

Hi!
I've been doing calligraphy since 2017 and illumination since October 2022
i use mostly dip pens and have been messing with quills a bit, though i still love fountain pens.
crow quill medieval calligraphy is possible if you're not a coward
i use lots of different inks and brands of gouache and watercolor. walnut ink is so soft omg
I'm a scribe and bard in the Society for Creative Anachronism (East Kingdom, Barony of Settmour Swamp & Østgarðr, but also Aethelmearc, Barony of the Rhydderich Hael)
obsessed with early period, persona is from post-Roman Cornwall (Kingdom of Dumnonia)
