Medal of Honor Monday: James Howard
On this day in 1913, a hero is born. James H. Howard would go on to become an American fighter pilot during World War II. He is perhaps best known for the day on which he singlehandedly took on 30 German fighter planes.
“For sheer determination and guts, it was the greatest exhibition I’ve ever seen,” one witness concluded. “It was a case of one lone American against what seemed to be the entire Luftwaffe. He was all over the wing, across and around it. They can’t give that boy a big enough award.”
Maybe not, but then-Major Howard would receive the Medal of Honor for his daring feat anyway.

Milestone Monday
Tumblr media
On this day, October 30, 1811, Jane Austen’s (1775-1817) Sense and Sensibility was published anonymously as written “by a Lady.” Austen's brother negotiated the printing with publisher Thomas Egerton who agreed to publish the book on commission at Austen’s financial risk. With presumed great relief, Sense and Sensibility received favorable reviews and the first printing of 750 copies sold out in 1813. A second printing was run later that year, and the novel has been in continuous publication ever since.
In honor of Sense and Sensibility’s publication anniversary, we’re looking at both of the Special Collections copies! The first was published in 1856 by Richard Bentley (1794-1871). Bently purchased the copyrights to Austen’s work after her death and began publishing her novels as part of his Standard Novel Series in 1833. He hired illustrator Ferdinand Pickering (c. 1811-1882) to create an engraved frontispiece as illustration for each novel. This was the first time Austen’s work was released in collected editions and the first time her novels were illustrated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sense and Sensibility has since been illustrated many times over, shedding a contemporary light on Austen’s characters, including our second holding published by the Limited Editions Club. Limited Editions Club printed 1,500 copies of Sense and Sensibility in 1957 for its members. It includes a contemporary introduction by novelist Stella Gibbons and distinct pen and ink illustrations by Caldecott Medal honoree Helen Sewell. The edition was designed by Joseph Blumenthal and printed by him at the Spiral Press in New York. Our copy is from the collection of long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Holy Monday & National Medal of Honor Day & International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
Person A is an old god that got overpowered and enslaved by the new gods, but who they keep around because they maintain their godly power by draining Person A’s overabundance of it. Generations later, the worshipers of the new gods send their children to the gods to be their servants in hopes of gaining a specific god’s favor and bringing home a blessing to their family when their period of servitude ends. Person B is a child who was sent in unwilling, taken from their homeland and ‘adopted’ by a family who worships the new gods. Person B ends up being more rebellious and suspicious of the new gods and ends up finding where Person A is kept and freeing the ancient god, since the two share a similar goal to get revenge on the new gods and their worshipers.

In an extraordinary session on Sunday evening, the Saeima decided to declare Monday, May 29, 2023, the Day of the Bronze Medal Win in honor of the high achievement of the Latvian men's hockey team.
52 members voted in favor, no one voted against, but three members abstained.
School exams will not be canceled.
The bill's annotation states: "Since the restoration of Latvia's independence, hockey has been one of the most popular and supported sports. The participation of Latvian ice hockey professionals in various sports competitions is always an event in Latvian society. It is therefore our duty to strengthen the fact of the important success of Latvian athletes at the 2023 World Hockey Championships in the social memory of society."
"Celebrating the success of the Latvian hockey team could help everyone to strive for excellence in their work, in their skills. The joint celebration of this day would strengthen the national self-confidence and unity of Latvian society,” said the amendment to the adopted draft law.
One of the reasons why it is decided to announce a holiday was indicated as the need to allow residents of the regions to welcome the Latvian hockey team in Rīga.

For the first time, Kinzhal hypersonic missile is launched from a Russian Su-34 bomber
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/04/22023 - 17:34 in Military, War Zones
Russia adapted its long-range Su-34 bomber to launch its Kinzhal hypersonic missile, which was previously deployed from the MiG-31 high-altitude fighter.
The aircraft launched the Kinzhal missile, which is believed to travel at speeds between Mach 7 and 10, at targets in Ukraine on Monday morning, the Russian news agency TASS reported.
Tumblr media
"The Su-34 fighter deployed the Kinzhal hypersonic missile during the special military operation. The first crew to successfully execute such a mission will be honored with Russian State medals," a defense officer told the media.

It is reported that Kinzhal has a range of approximately 2,000 kilometers. It has low radar signature and high maneuverability, designed for precision attacks against ground and naval targets.
Russia intends to equip the Kinzhal missiles in the Tu-22M3 strategic bombers.

When it comes to high fantasy settings, what are the typical elements and setting details that you really like?
Sorry, saw this earlier but got distracted arguing with a Kazakh about juice
Anyway, it's a broad question, so I invite a follow-up one if I don't end up answering in the way you meant, but just what springs to mind is:
1..) a bit of realpolitik. It doesn't have to get bogged down in conference room melodrama, and there can (and should) still be cultural and ideological factors involved, but I find it a lot more interesting when major players are motivated by long-term strategic goals, need for resources and trade, and at-times-delicate relations with their neighbors rather than just being The Good Kingdom motivated purely by righteousness and altruism in their fight against The Evil Empire that seeks to establish Mandatory CBT Monday across the entire world because the emperor just fucking hates uncrushed balls.
2.) Disunity. Bringing this up in the fantasy community is preaching to the choir, but writers keep fumbling it, so I still appreciate seeing it done well. Most non-humans in fantasy settings tend to be not only politically unified (if you're lucky, within a few archetypes/ethnocultural groupings per race) often under one ruler, but so similar in ideology and temperament that they're fucking interchangeable. "Elves are patient when dealing with the shorter-lived races" "Dwarves are gruff and obsessed with clan honor". This is more a problem in eastern media that models itself off western fantasy conventions, but I've ranted about those in the past and will rant about them more in the future, so I won't harp on it too much now
3.) fantastical elements hitting that particular balance of believably familiar and yet duly respected and reacted to by the people living in the world. This one's a bit difficult to explain, though I'll resort to some of what we discussed in @astromancerlich's discord the other day. Magic shouldn't be eternally numinous and mysterious; we have records of people trying to make love potions and curse tablets and such historically, people will eventually get used to stuff and start thinking of how to use it, so Farmer Bob shouldn't shit himself when he sees a goblin or watches a wizard animate a broom to sweep up, but conversely, things that are of genuine import should get treated with such and not turn into jokes like a lot of modern fantasy. A Paladin isn't just some self-righteous asshole that everyone puts up with because he can smite good, he's a god's wrath walking the earth. A dragon on the horizon should inspire near-religious awe and terror. Hell, an "adventuring party" is, like I've said before, a gang of dudes who consider things that we award Medals of Honor for in real life to be a day's work. Just thinking about how people would react to these things rather than "oh, of course the librarian is used to adventuring parties coming in to translate the ancient text written by the Children of The Gods after a tablet of it was recovered in a buried city"
4.) Frankly, somewhat basically and what may seem like it contrasts a bit with the above, a sense of actual fun and adventure. A lot of stories, particularly ones that persistently rely on The World Is In Peril, end up with a cardboard cutout world and a bunch of miserable assholes trying to save it no matter how much detail went into the setting. I want the sense that this world is a pretty cool place to live and that going on adventures, kicking in doors like a fantasy badass is exciting and engaging (combat should always be treated with the seriousness a life-or-death situation warrants, which doesn't contrast with the point, but that's another rant for another day). It's high fantasy, whether it's a gang of dubious mercenaries or a party of epic heroes, the story should leave you on a high or at least bittersweet note

"Remembering Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone" Good evening, everyone. 78 Years Ago, Today - (Monday) February 19th, 1945. The United States Marine Corps invades the volcanic island of Iwo Jima in the northern Pacific. It is one of the last stepping stones to mainland Japan. Among the Leathernecks charging ashore is Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone of Raritan, NJ. By the time he hit the black sands of Iwo, John was already a hero and a legend, not only to the US Marine Corps, but to the American people. A former US Army Veteran who served in the Philippines in the 1930's, he enlisted in the Marines in June of 1940, prior to the outbreak of WW2. In August of 1942, he would find himself with the 1st Marine Division on the Japanese-held island of Guadalcanal, which was the first amphibious assault by the United States against the Axis, a full-three months prior to the Allied landings in North Africa as part of Operation Torch, in November. That October, he would earn the Medal Of Honor for nothing less than a superhuman effort in holding off the Japanese as they attacked his position. (That's a post for a different day). His Medal Of Honor would be awarded in 1943, and to help sell War Bonds, he was sent Stateside. Refusing to stay out of combat, he requested to return to the front lines. Reluctantly, the Marines agreed. By 1945, he was with the 5th Marine Division for its assault on Iwo Jima. On Feb. 19th, he led his Marines across the beach, destroying an enemy position AND rescuing an American tank and guiding it out of a minefield - all under hellacious enemy fire. Finally, a Japanese mortar shell detonated nearby, and cut him down. Gunnery Sergeant Basilone was just 28 years old, and he would be one of some 6,800 Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers killed on Iwo Jima in the 35 days it took to secure the island. Another 20,000 would be wounded. Each year, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone is honored with a parade in his hometown of Raritan, NJ, held in September. There is also a statue of him in Raritan, dedicated in 1948. Never Forgotten ❤🇺🇲 (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co3bZl4NqpE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A Visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
Tumblr media
If you are looking for a place to learn about the history and culture of Ghana, then you should definitely visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra. This park is not only a beautiful and serene place to relax, but also a tribute to the life and legacy of Ghana's first President and Pan-Africanist, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Who was Kwame Nkrumah?
Tumblr media
Kwame Nkrumah was born on September 21, 1909 in Nkroful, a small town in the Western Region of Ghana. He was a teacher, a journalist, a politician, and a visionary leader who fought for the independence and unity of Ghana and Africa. He led the Gold Coast (now Ghana) to become the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957. He became the Prime Minister of Ghana and later the President of the Republic. He also championed the cause of African unity and co-founded the Organization of African Unity (now African Union) in 1963. He was overthrown by a military coup in 1966 while he was on a peace mission in Vietnam. He died in exile in Bucharest, Romania on April 27, 1972.
What can you see at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park covers an area of about five acres and is located on the site of the former British colonial polo grounds, where Nkrumah declared Ghana's independence in 1957. The park consists of three main attractions: the mausoleum, the museum, and the statue.
Tumblr media
- The mausoleum is a marble structure that houses the mortal remains of Nkrumah and his wife Fathia Nkrumah. It is designed to resemble an upside-down sword, which is a symbol of peace in Akan culture. The mausoleum is surrounded by water, which represents life. A skylight at the top illuminates the grave, which is marked by a simple marble slab.
Tumblr media
- The museum is an underground building that displays various objects and documents related to Nkrumah's life and achievements. You can see his personal belongings, such as his clothes, books, pens, glasses, and shoes. You can also see his awards, medals, photographs, letters, speeches, and publications. The museum also has audio-visual exhibits that show Nkrumah's speeches and interviews.
Tumblr media
- The statue is a bronze sculpture that depicts Nkrumah standing tall and waving to the crowd. It is placed on a pedestal that bears his famous quote: "Seek ye first the political kingdom and all other things shall be added unto you". The statue faces the Independence Square, where Nkrumah delivered his historic speech on March 6, 1957.
Why should you visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park?
Tumblr media
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is more than just a tourist attraction. It is a place of inspiration, education, and reflection. By visiting the park, you can:
- Learn about the history of Ghana and Africa from a different perspective.
- Appreciate the vision and courage of Nkrumah and his colleagues who fought for freedom and dignity.
- Understand the challenges and opportunities that Ghana and Africa face today.
- Celebrate the achievements and contributions of Nkrumah and other African leaders to humanity.
- Honor the memory and legacy of Nkrumah and his wife Fathia.
How can you visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park?
Tumblr media
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is open from Monday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The entrance fee is 10 Ghana cedis for adults and 5 Ghana cedis for children. You can also book a guided tour for an additional fee.
The park is located in downtown Accra, opposite the old Parliament House (now CHRAJ). You can easily access it by public transport or taxi. You can also walk from other nearby attractions, such as the Independence Square, the Black Star Square, and the Accra Arts Centre.
The park has a souvenir shop where you can buy books, postcards, T-shirts, and other items related to Nkrumah. It also has a cafeteria where you can enjoy some snacks and drinks.
What are you waiting for?
Tumblr media
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a must-see destination for anyone who wants to experience Ghana's rich history and culture. It is also a place where you can pay your respects to one of Africa's greatest sons and daughters.
So what are you waiting for? Plan your visit today and discover why Kwame Nkrumah is still relevant and revered in Ghana and beyond.

Medal of Honor Monday: Neel Kearby
At about this time in 1911, a hero is born. Neel E. Kearby would go on to become one of the most decorated pilots in World War II. He achieved 22 kills during his time in combat, the most of any Thunderbolt pilot in the Pacific.
He received the Medal of Honor during the war, but he was known for so much more: Kearby turned the P-47 Thunderbolt into a weapon of war that the Japanese could not ignore.
“Since the P-47 could not maneuver with the enemy at low altitude,” the National Museum of the United States Air Force explains, “Kearby would lead his group into hostile territory at high altitude where the Thunderbolt’s turbosupercharged engine gave it an advantage. Upon sighting the enemy below, Kearby and his pilots made high-speed attacks exploiting the P-47s remarkable diving ability. The energy built up in the dive allowed them to quickly climb back up to altitude for another diving pass.”

Milestone Monday
54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment
On this day, July 18 in 1863, one of the first formal African American military units, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, supported by several white regiments, attempted an unsuccessful assault on Confederate-held Battery Wagner in what is known as the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. Despite the Confederate victory, the valor of the Black Union soldiers in the battle was hailed, strategically encouraging more African-Americans to enlist in Union regiments.
The 54th Massachusetts and this battle were most popularly memorialized by the 1989 Academy Award-winning film Glory, starring Matthew Broderick as the regiment’s white commander Colonel Robert G. Shaw (pictured above), and Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Jihmi Kennedy, and Andre Braugher as members of the Black troops. A well-known monument by Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the Boston Common also memorializes Shaw and his regiment, and is part of the Boston Black Heritage Trail.
Curiously, Medal of Honor awardee Sergeant William Harvey Carney (also pictured above) is not depicted as a character in the movie Glory. During the Battle of Fort Wagner, Carney grabbed  the U.S. flag as the flag bearer fell and rallied the troops by carrying the flag to the enemy ramparts and back, crying "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground!" The battle cry would later be turned into a song in Carney’s honor in 1900. This heroic action became the first for which the Medal of Honor was awarded to an African American.
In commemoration of this milestone, we present the second revised and corrected edition of History of the Fifty-Fourth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, 1863-1865 by Captain Luis F. Emilio of the 54th, published in Boston by the Boston Book Company in 1894.

U.S. eavesdropped on U.N. secretary general, leaks reveal (Washington Post) The United States has eavesdropped on United Nations Secretary General António Guterres’s conversations, according to four more leaked documents. One intercepted conversation details Guterres’s “outrage” over being denied a visit to a war-torn region in Ethiopia. Another said that Guterres’ reported that he was “really pissed off” about a surprise public ceremony in honor of International Women’s Day during his March visit to Ukraine. Aides later said Zelensky had sprung the event—which included the presentation of medals to uniformed soldiers—on him without warning and posted photographs and videos of the event that implied the secretary general was congratulating military personnel on one side of the Russia-Ukraine war.
While some students skip college, trade programs are booming (AP) It’s almost 4 p.m. at the Nashville branch of the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, and the students in the auto collision repair night class are just starting their school day. One is sanding the seal off the bed of his 1989 Ford F-350. Another is patiently hammering out a banged-up fender. A third, Cheven Jones, is taking a break from working on his 2003 Lexus IS 300 to chat with some classmates. While almost every sector of higher education has fewer students registering for classes, many trade programs are thriving. Jones and his classmates, seeking certificates and other short-term credentials—not associate degrees—are part of that upswing. Trade programs are often more affordable than a traditional four-year degree, students note, and, for many, skilled trades offer a more obvious path to a job.
Many Older Americans Haven’t Saved Anything for Retirement (Bloomberg) More than a quarter of Americans have no money saved for retirement. That’s according to a new survey from personal finance site Credit Karma, which found older respondents are even less prepared by some measures than their younger counterparts. Nearly one in five people aged 59 and older said they didn’t have a retirement account and 27% of respondents said they haven’t set anything aside for their later years. That compared to a quarter of Gen X respondents.
Antisemitism festers in current US political and social climate, report says (Reuters) The social and political climate in the United States has become fertile ground for antisemitism in recent years, according to a report released on Monday by advocacy group Anti-Defamation League and the Tel Aviv University. Expressions of hatred against Jews have become “mainstreamed and normalized,” and incidents of violence, vandalism, and harassment of Jews have increased, the report said. The report linked the rise of antisemitism to trends such as growing populism, political polarization and an increase in hate crimes nationwide.
Mexico feels the strain as Haitian migrants, caught in limbo, mark time (Reuters) Asylum claims by Haitians in Mexico are on track to hit a record above 50,000 this year, a top official said, further pressuring the country’s already strained migrant services as many begin to contemplate a future there rather than in the United States. In the year’s first three months, 13,631 applied for refugee status, dwarfing claims from other countries and compared to 17,153 in all of 2022, according to data from the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR). Part of the explanation for the increase may lie in a toughening of U.S. border controls in January that has made it harder for many migrants to cross by land into the United States, together with a parallel U.S. program allowing a monthly quota of Haitians to cross by air. Haitians without sponsors or who have irregularly crossed into Mexico or the United States would not qualify for the latter program, leaving many effectively stranded in Mexico.
Brazil’s welcome of Russian minister prompts US blowback (AP) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday expressed gratitude to Brazil for its approach in pushing for an end to hostilities in Ukraine—an effort that has irked both Kyiv and the West, and by afternoon prompted an unusually sharp rebuke from the White House. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has refused to provide weapons to Ukraine while proposing a club of nations including Brazil and China to mediate peace. On Sunday, Lula told reporters in Abu Dhabi that two nations—both Russia and Ukraine—had decided to go to war, and a day earlier in Beijing said the U.S. must stop “stimulating” the continued fighting and start discussing peace. Earlier this month, he suggested Ukraine could cede Crimea to end the war, which the spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, Oleg Nikolenko, and others rejected.
Flower power draws crowds to Low Countries (AP) Rain or shine, there is no way to keep budding flowers down. From the world-famous Keukenhof garden in the Netherlands to the magical bluebell Hallerbos forest in Belgium, they are out there again, almost on cue to enthrall, enthuse and soothe the mind. All despite the cold and miserable early spring in this part of Western Europe. The beauty is not lost on tens of thousands of visitors thronging the pathways through the riot of color and fragrances. And if the COVID-19 pandemic left the sights eerily deserted for a few years, the challenge now has become how to manage the masses. Gardeners plant and nurture the staggering 7 million bulbs to ensure visitors who flock to The Keukenhof from around the world all get to see a vibrant spectacle whenever they come during the opening season from March 23-May 14.
Putin rallies his troops with 2nd Ukraine visit in 2 months (AP) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday visited command posts of the Kremlin’s forces fighting in Ukraine in an apparent effort to rally his troops as the war approaches its 14th month and Kyiv readies a possible counteroffensive with Western-supplied weapons. A video released by the Kremlin and broadcast by Russian state television showed Putin arriving by helicopter at the command post for Russian forces in the southern Kherson region and afterward flying to the headquarters of the Russian National Guard of the eastern Luhansk region.
Killing of jailed lawmaker on live TV puts spotlight on India’s extrajudicial violence (Washington Post) The slaying of a former lawmaker and his brother in police custody in India’s Uttar Pradesh state over the weekend has placed a spotlight on extrajudicial attacks and killings, driven in part by ethnoreligious divisions fomented at the highest levels of government. Assassins posing as journalists shot and killed at point-blank range Atiq Ahmed, 60, a mobster-turned-lawmaker, and his brother Ashraf Ahmed, a former state lawmaker, as they answered questions on live TV Saturday. In the footage, gunmen continue to shoot the men as they slump to the ground. The Ahmeds, members of India’s Muslim minority, were killed amid a huddle of reporters asking questions. Police moved swiftly to restrain the apparent assailants, including at least one who was chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” or “Hail Lord Ram”—a religious phrase that has become a Hindu nationalist slogan, sometimes heard in crowds carrying out attacks on Muslims. Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, has developed a notorious reputation for gangland violence as well as a long history of extrajudicial vigilante violence carried out by local authorities. Under the rule of Yogi Adityanath, the state’s right-wing Hindu nationalist chief minister, Uttar Pradesh has seen a surge in such encounters with police.
21 die in Beijing hospital fire (ABC News) A fire killed at least 21 people at a hospital in Beijing on Tuesday and forced dozens of people to evacuate, Chinese state media reported. As clouds of black smoke billowed into the sky, people trapped in the multistory building apparently tied bedsheets into makeshift ropes and escaped by climbing out windows. Others took refuge by perching on air conditioning units just outside. Emergency crews extinguished the fire, which broke out in the Beijing Changfeng Hospital, and at least 71 patients were rescued.
Bangladesh to pay off Russian nuclear plant loan in Chinese currency (Washington Post) Bangladesh has approved a payment of $318 million to a Russian nuclear power developer using the Chinese yuan, according to a Bangladeshi official. The decision offers the latest instance of countries bypassing the U.S. dollar and using the Chinese currency to conduct international payments.
For Palestinians, holiest Ramadan night starts at checkpoint (AP) For many Palestinians, the journey to one of Islam’s most sacred sites on the holiest night of Ramadan begins in a dust-choked, garbage-strewn maelstrom. Tens of thousands of Palestinian worshippers from across the occupied West Bank on Monday crammed through a military checkpoint leading to Jerusalem to pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque for Laylat al-Qadr, or the “Night of Destiny,” when Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammad centuries ago. The noisy, sweaty crowds at Qalandiya checkpoint seem chaotic—but there was a system: women to the right; men to the left. Jerusalem residents here, disabled people there. And the grim-looking men stranded at the corner had endured the long wait only to be turned back altogether. For Palestinian worshippers, praying at the third-holiest site in Islam is a centerpiece of Ramadan. But hundreds of thousands are barred from legally crossing into Jerusalem, with most men under 55 turned away at checkpoints due to Israeli security restrictions.
Religious Pop Star Singing of ‘God and Faith’ Wins Over Secular Israel (NYT) The singer and his songs were highly religious. His concert venue, on a kibbutz developed by secular leftists, was definitely not. His audience of many hundreds? It was somewhere in between: some secular, some devout, an unusual blending of two sections of a divided Israeli society that rarely otherwise mix. Ishay Ribo, 34, is among a crop of young Israeli pop stars from religious backgrounds, some from Jewish settlements in the occupied territories, whose music is attracting more diverse listeners, and featuring prominently in the soundscape of contemporary Israeli life. In less than two decades, religious singers have moved from the cultural fringe to widespread acclaim, “not only among their people, but in all Israel,” said Yoav Kutner, a leading Israeli music critic and radio presenter. Mr. Ribo is perhaps the clearest example of this shift. Forgoing the erotic and the profane, his wholesome songs are often prayers to God—but sung to pop and rock music played by his band of guitarists. “Cause of causes,” he addresses God in one of his biggest hits. “Only you should be thanked for all the days and nights.”
Hospitals and Aid Groups Become Targets as Sudan Fighting Intensifies (NYT) As two rival generals, each with his own army, grappled for power in Sudan on Monday, even hospitals trying to tend to the swelling numbers of wounded were no longer havens. At one overwhelmed medical center, the morning began with shelling. Then, members of a paramilitary force barged inside, ordered newborns and other patients to be evacuated, and began taking up positions, one doctor said. “The hospital turned into a battlefield,” said the doctor, Musab Khojali, an emergency room physician at the Police Hospital in Burri, northeast of the capital, Khartoum. Many other hospitals were also reported to have come under attack on Monday, the third day of fighting in Sudan. The death toll has risen to at least 180, with about 1,800 others injured. Amid growing reports of random violence and looting, concerns grew that the fighting might embroil other nations in the region, including Egypt, which has troops in the country, as well as Chad, Ethiopia and Libya. Russia has also been trying to make inroads in Sudan, and members of the Kremlin-affiliated Wagner private military company are posted there.
