2024 Ice Hockey Women's World Championship: A Primer

When: April 3rd to April 14th. The schedule here will tell you when games are taking place both in your local time and venue time.

Where is it taking place?: Utica, New York

Where to watch:

For the first time, we will have ALL games broadcasted in USA and Canada. I am not sure how many games are going to be broadcasted outside North America, but we can reasonably assume they will at least carry their home country games

TSN will carry all games in canada

What is the tournament format?:

There are two divisions, Division A with the five ranked teams going into the tournament and Division B with the next five. Each division plays a round robin style ranking round, and at the conclusion the bottom two teams in Division B will be relegated, while the rest automatically make the quarterfinals. Quarterfinals will go A1-B3, A2-B2, A3-B1, A4-A5. In addition to the finals for gold that will take place, there will be a bronze medal game and a fifth place game for ranking. Standings will use a three point systems.

Division B: Sweden, Japan, Germany, China, Denmark

2023 Result: Won Gold

2024 goals: Win gold again

Notable roster changes: This team continues to go very very young. Abby Roque is the most notable roster omission here. Top defender Lee Stecklein is also not on this roster, due to her taking a break from the National Team. Amanda Kessel was also left off, but she has not been active within the last year as a player, so not entirely surprising.

Three players to watch: Grace Zumwinkle has been one of the stars of the PWHL so far, and is likely to get more responsibility on the national team than ever before, so keep an eye on her and how she may translate her successful season to the tournament. Rory Guilday may only be 21, but she is heading to her third senior world championships, a long time favorite of the team USA coaching staff with her shutdown defensive skills who they'll hope can take another step this tournament with Lee Stecklein absent. Joy Dunne is the youngest player on this roster, just 18 years old coming off a 24-18-42 season in Ohio and a national championship. This will be her first senior level tournament, and I'd expect her to get ample offensive opportunities.

2024 goals: Gold

Notable roster changes: Micah Zandee-Hart is the most surprising one after being on the roster for a few years. Claire Thompson is absent as is Rebecca Johnston, but that is more expected while Thompson is finishing medical school and Johnston has not played in the past calendar year. Cousins Nicole and Julia Gosling join the team after strong rivalry series showings.

Three players to watch: Natalie Spooner is the front runner for PWHL MVP, so everyone will be watching to see if she continues to score at the rate she has been. Expected number one overall pick in the upcoming PWHL draft, Sarah Fillier, will be playing in her last showing before the draft happens as she finished out her college season. Nicole Gosling was the highest scoring defender in the NCAA this year at Clarkson, going 14-25-39 in 40 regular season games, so seeing how she impacts this blue line is a must watch.

2024 goal: upset their opponent in the semifinals and make the finals

Roster changes: The bad news is top defender Dominika Lásková is out with injury. The good news is star goaltender Klára Peslarová is healthy unlike last year, as is blueline mainstay Tereza Radová. Alena Mills retired from the national team. Kristýna Pátková did not make the team this year, in her place comes Boston University commit Anežka Čabelová who had a stellar U18 worlds. Karolína Kosinová did not make the team, in her place is HV71 assistant captain Klara Seroiszková.

Three players to watch: 17 year old Adéla Šapovalivová was the highest scoring u18 player in the SDHL (Sweden's highest level league) this year and one of their top scorers in general going 11-18-29 in 32 regular season games. She was also a key part of the U18 team that upset Canada in the semifinals to advance to Czechia's first ever u18 final. With Mills retired, she will get more minutes at her third (!!!!) senior worlds. Next up is Klára Peslarová, and if you're not familiar with her game, she is straight up a top five goaltender in the world. She just came off a stellar season with Brynäs IF in Sweden where she had a .935 save percentage in 20 games, and has been consistently stellar on the international stage as well like when she had 55 saves against the united states at the olympics. Kateřina Mrázová is a fantastic playmaker has been a bright spot on a Ottawa tam that has struggled to find itself, and is also one of the most veteran members of this squad. If they win, she'll have to lead the way.

2023 finish: Fifth Place

2024 goals: Bronze

Roster changes: Two of their key offensive pieces Elisa Holopainen and Michelle Karvinen, are back and healthy this year! Susanna Tapani is also back on this team. Those are three absolute big pieces that completely change this roster for the better. A few depth roster forwards were left off in their place, most notably Kiira Yrjänen. Defense has more shakeups. Sini Karjalainen is a notable omission and long time defender Rosa Lindstedt retired. Eve Savander, Oona Koukkula, and Siiri Yrjölä slot in.

Three players to watch: I've consistently been a very big Elisa Holopainen fan and I think she's one of the best players in the world and not talked about nearly enough. Just as she began to really shine in the international stage, she got hit with injury, but as she's come back with year she dominated Finland's league going 32-25-57 in 19 games. I think I've put her as a player to watch like every year I've done a preview and I'm going to keep going it. Finland has faced a lot of questions about their goaltending following Räty and the team going their separate ways, but right now, it is Sanni Ahola's crease to lose. She was stellar in the three games she started last year for Finland in the world championship and was solid for st cloud state with a .935 save percentage in 17 starts this year. With Lindstedt's retirement, Krista Parkkonen will see more minutes, coming off a breakout sophomore year in a university of vermont program that's developed a decent amount of international blueliners.

2024 goals: bronze

Roster changes: quite a lot of shake up. no Caroline spies as their mainstay backup, Alexandra Lehmann takes her place. No Sarah Forster, who wore an A and led their defense last time around. She only played 7 games in SWHL this year, so likely injury is at play.

Players to watch: it is, of course, the Alina Müller and Lara Stalder show until it isn’t. So, besides them, the players to watch are Andrea Brändli is another “top five goaltender in the world” to know, sporting a .937 in her first year playing in Sweden post a stellar college career. 18 year old Ivana Marie Wey just had a great year playing pro as Stalder’s teammate and will be important for the next Swiss wave. With no Forster, Lara Christen will take on a lot of the top defensive minutes most likely.

2024 hopes: return to group A

Roster changes: no Sarah Grahn which isn’t entirely expected but still a big change, in response Ida Boman gets the call. No Fanny Rask or Olivia Carlsson, who retired.

Three players to know: Ebba Hedqvist is a 17 year old elite center coming off a great performance at worlds and has an eye for playmaking that will be critical for Sweden. Maja Nylén Persson is the #1 defender of team Sweden that has consistently been the top defender by points in the SDHL and won defender of the year in 2022-2023, and she is only 23 years old. Another part of Sweden’s insane center depth is Lina Ljungblom, who will likely play in Montreal next year and had 46 points in 36 regular season games. In the various tournaments/friendlies that Sweden has played leading up to this (ie five nations cup), she has 10 goals in 15 games. These three players are truly some of my favorite in hockey right now

2024 hopes: return to group A

Roster changes: honestly we mostly running this back. One or two u18 add ins but overall the same as 2023

Players to watch: stop me if you heard this before but Akane Shiga is very good. The PWHL Ottawa player is the only player from Japan to score against the USA, and will continue to be japans biggest threat. Another big player is Haruka Toko, one of the SDHL’s top scorers this year who had established herself as a top talent in the last two years. This year, the 27 year old had 13 goals and 30 assists in 36 games in Sweden this year. She was one of seven players in Japan to play in Sweden this year, a year that saw a new high in Japanese players going overseas to play. That also includes my last player to watch, Yoshino Enomoto, who played in switzerland and still put up around a point per game on a team that struggled (they folded in the offseason then came back and built their roster late and were ultimately relegated, but she was a bright spot in her first season there)

Fun fact: did you know three pairs of sisters play on this team? Akane and Aoi Shiga, Haruka toko and Ayaka Hitosato, and Rio and Riri Noro

2024 Goal: Make quarterfinals and avoid relegation

Roster changes: Both goalies behind Abstreiter last year, Chiara Schultes and Johanna May, did not make this roster with Hemmerle and Loist taking their place. The d core remains the same besides Daria Gleissner taking Heidi Strompf's place. National team vet Marie Delarbre is absent with injury, Sonja Weidenfelder did not play hockey this year and her status is uncertain, and Anne Bartsch did not make the roster. In their place we have Emily Nix, Lilli Welcke, and Lucia Schmitz.

Three players to watch: Luisa Welcke was with Germany last year, but has a second season in the NCAA under her belt and a nice depth player performance at Boston University. She will have more chances to show off her offense this tournament than in the NCAA, and I'm excited to see what she can show. Jule Schiefer had a revelation this year in the German league. From last year where she only scored 4 goals in 20 games, this year she scored 22 in 24. Let's see if she can continue this at worlds. Nina Jobst-Smith will play big defensive minutes for Germany after finishing her fourth season at Minnesota Duluth, this time serving as an assistant captain, and was nominated for 2023-24 All-WCHA Third Team. She's a two way defender who will be taking on big responsibility for Germany as she has in the past.

2023 result: Promotion from Division I

2024 goal: Make quarterfinals and avoid relegation

Roster changes: Oh boy. So, like, a lot of people, and here is why: up until this tournament, China allowed dual citizens not born in China to play for them. This includes some players you may know from PWHL/NCAA like Leah Lum, Hannah Miller, Rachel Llanes, and Tia Chan. Going into this tournament, they changed the rules and those players will not be eligible, so it is a significant roster shakeup.

Three player to watch; This team is very young. Yifan Wang is 16 years old, and in her international debut scored 10 goals in 5 games in the WJC-D2A U18. This is obviously a gigantic step up in competition and very hard for a 16 year old to be playing against adults on the highest level stage of women's hockey, so I don't imagine she'll get a TON of ice time, but she is worth looking out for. Xin Fang is the veteran and star of this roster, who had 2 goal and 2 assists in the teams D1A tournament that earned them their promotion. 17 year old Dartmouth commit Grace Zhan is who I expect to be their starting goaltender. Born in Beijing, she spent the past year playing Minnesota High School Hockey and put up top numbers in a league that sees a lot of NCAA recruits.

2023 Results: Promotion from Division I

2024 hope: Make Quarterfinals and avoid relegation

Roster changes: Long time national team star and centerpiece of the team Josefine Jakobsen will no longer play for Denmark, though she will continue her club career.) Otherwise, despite some depth changes, it is mostly the same lineup.

Three players to watch: Frederikke Foss had a great year at Shattuck St Mary's u19 program and has committed to UMaine, and may be able to spark some offense Denmark will desperately need without Jakobsen. Silke Lave Glud will also be expected to carry the offense after her stellar year in the Tier 2 league in Sweden, and lead the way for younger players as one of the most experienced members of the team. Goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström's performance at the D1A worlds was a big reason for their promotion, and she is coming off a great sophmore year at st. lawrence university where she had a .931 save percentage in 36 games and 7 shutouts. If Denmark wants to stay in the top division, she will need to steal a game for them.

okay so I saw @jade-of-mourning’s post about how makorra would make bomb yuri and I am 100% in agreement so,, how I imagine tlok would go if mako was a girl.

I feel like this would totally affect mako’s backstory n stuff too because life on the street is rough for any kids but like. little girls with no one to run to surrounded by creepy criminal guys. not great! so not only would that add an extra layer of trauma, but I feel like it would also add dimension to mako+zolt’s dynamic when mako and bolin worked w the triads. like, instead of firebending gang leader who wants to shape a mini-me he found into his successor, it’s. hold on let me make another sentence. it’s a girl who’s learned to protect herself and a man she needs to defend herself from offering to teach her better. so there’s less of the straightforwardness of their canon interactions—mako knows she’s being exploited but is willing to play into it to take advantage of learning zolt’s skills and zolt knows she’s clever but wants her close. idk how fucked up zolt would be, but he could probably have some motivations related to trafficking as a backup should mako turn on him that would’ve been less viable with canon mako. idk. thoughts are thinking too quickly for me to type rn.

I’m not gonna go through everything in tlok for the sake of not yapping for 12 hrs like i did in my 100yr war mako post but through the four books in the context of makorra i imagine it would go:

b1: weirdgirl firebender who’s a control freak becomes the avatar’s best friend. she’s totally not in love btw. and there’s literally no jealousy at all when asami befriends korra either cause they’re just chill. just friends, how friends are, yk. amon is a freak but part of her is relieved he took zolt’s bending. thought the thought of her getting her bending taken away feels like a part of her autonomy being taken and that’s terrifying so she’s relieved when he fucking dies.

b2: from what I recall team avatar is more split up during b2 and do you know what that means. so much pining. it smells like a forest with the amount of longing bro. then mako gets arrested and prison as we all know is such a friendly environment for women so. more trauma. then harmonic convergence happens at that is absolutely when makorra realize they’re in loooove. then vaatu happens and it’s like ohhh shit I’m in deeeep.

b3: new airbenders yay! mako is distracted from korra a little bit when she and bolin meet their long lost extended family, until dear old grammy says that korra would make a fine husband for her granddaughter if she were a man. and cue gay panic cause DOES SHE KNOW???? HOW??? I’m being intentionally vague cause I last watched this show like five years ago and I don’t remember the timeline at all but bear with me. airbenders in ba sing se are freed, krew makes their way over to zaofu to meet opal. this is cool it’s fine. lin is literally mako’s mom and she’s still worried the whole time they’re on zaofu. korra is kidnapped. prison for mako and bolin (again). m+b search the desert for korrasami, it’s all mostly the same except more. yk. gay pining. korra is poisoned but the girls have a girl moment on air temple island after Jinora gets her tattoos :3

b4: korra travels for a while, before returning to rc. then she’s gone again to the swamp. kuvira attacks zaofu, korra defends, and then she’s back. mako and asami are. yeah. blah blah blah that one episode of makorra reminiscing gets really gay, kuvira tries to take over rc, mako lightning-zaps the mech and almost dies and then BOOM. they kiss after the battle. and the lesbians win once again as makorra walk into the spirit world hand in hand.

if you’re wondering why this was written so disjointedly it’s because I kept getting distracted mid-sentence. and I also hate how the romance was dealt with in canon, but it’s such a big part of b1 (my favorite book minus romance) and the repercussions lasted throughout all four seasons so obviously that I physically cannot bring myself to rewatch it. and girls are so. thank u lychee ur really super awesome and cool for drawing makorra as girls because I think they would’ve worked out in canon if mako was a girl. sorry I’m really sick rn and I’m a little out of it lmao 😭🙏🏼

hm. finishing up my like third replay of the twc trilogy and. some rambling disjointed theories about future plot points/revelations:

i feel like someone has to have already said this but the supernatural rogue leader with the detective's eyes is obviously rook's Not Dead After All sister, right? like we can all agree on that one

i think it's going to turn out that rebecca is so cagey about how rook died because she is responsible for it--not, like, directly, but in a way that makes it very easy to blame herself. she assigned him the mission he died on, he wanted to leave the agency and she convinced him to stay, that sort of thing.

I think all the villains that we see will end up showing up again (either as allies or enemies), but im specifically imagining that murphy will reappear as a minor antagonist--either naturally if he escaped, or as a result of a prison break of caged supernaturals

another probably obvious one but each love interest route seems to be building up to a major subplot for each of them:

A's is seems already deep in progress and will mainly revolve around them getting over themself, and will probably resolve with them getting with the detective. slow burn extraordinaire (most nebulous one for me since this is the only route i haven't played yet; this just comes from fandom osmosis so it might be off base)

M's is going to be their lost past but more focused on whatever is going to happen when that crystal of theirs ends up failing/getting lost/breaking (going off of that, we know mishka's got a particular point in mind for M to realize they are in love with the detective. i am 100% convinced at this point that it's going to be a dramatic moment when their crystal isn't working, they're losing it, and the detective brings them back to reality--that's going to be M's oh moment). interpersonal relationship conflict is mainly going to resolve around the natural conflict that arises from the pining while fucking trope that's been established

N's is THEIR past but more focused on their mystery powers (there's a post floating around that makes a great argument that's it's mind control and i'm inclined to believe that) and coming to terms with their "darker side"/learning to open up to the detective. i definitely feel n's route is going to get darker/more angsty before resolving

and we already know that most to all of F's romance route hardships are going to be external--the relationship itself is rock solid. right now it seems to me that it's going to be the conflict with the demons (literal ones this time) from their past coming back to them. also ten bucks says their mom is alive

AND MY BIG ONE: It's going to be revealed eventually that the detective and the LI are soulbonds. I feel like there's so much present in all the books that implies the relationship is not just one of attraction--there is a supernatural element of comfort, healing, and empathetic bond shit going on. the amount of information you get about soulbonds from f if you do research in b3 also just seems like setup for this reveal as well since it's explicitly stated that soulbonds are really rare but not limited to one supernatural species

I think this revelation will probably occur pretty late--at the very least after the LT route is resolved, because the soulbond will be with the LI that the detective ends up choosing. i also think this could also contribute to mishka's firm stance on not allowing the LT to have a poly option

quick hozier song analysis: "All Things End"

This is one of my favorite songs on all of Unreal Unearth and it's because the songwriting here is so cyclical, which matches what the song is about. All things do end, but they'll begin again, same as they always do. What I love about this song is that the tonal center of this song shifts around depending on whether it's in the chorus or verse, and it's not easy to say what key it's in. Is it in C, since there's no key signature? Or is it in A minor? Is it in F? It certainly shifts to F for the chorus.

Hozier uses a lot of secondary dominants in this song, which I am super happy with considering how straightforward some of the other songs are on this album. For the non-music-theory-knowers among us, in Western music, dominance is a key (get it?) idea - dominance is how we get back to our home key, our home note, our tonal center. You can imagine that your home key is like a house, or your front door. The only way to get to that front door is by walking across the stoop or threshold. The stoop is dominance. Every door has a stoop, and that stoop leads directly to the door (though sometimes you can forget something in the car and get to the stoop and immediately turn around to get the thing you forgot, also called the deceptive cadence, but you always come back to the door. And sometimes there's a side door you come in. That's the plagal cadence, also known as the "Amen" cadence, and Hozier uses that too in Unreal Unearth, but that's a different post).

The dominant of something is always the fifth of something (counted up from the key you're trying to go to, please do not tell me the dominant of C is F). For example, the dominant of C is G because G is a fifth away from C, inclusive (C-D-E-F-G). Okay, so in secondary dominance, you can actually approach the chord you want to get to via its front stoop. Let's say the chord progression is C to G. Easy easy. What if I want to make it more complicated? Then I go to the dominant of G (D, or to make it stronger, D7) and use that chord to approach G. That's secondary dominance (C-D7-G)(but if I were realizing this on piano, I'd likely play C-D7/C-G/B for voice leading reasons).

OKAY ALL THAT BEING SAID, Hozier uses secondaries here to keep it interesting. Let's take a look.

Back to the verse! And then a key change after verse 2!

All those 7s you see, especially the ones that are just the letter followed by the number (C7, E7) are dominant 7s, our stoop chords, which means they're the ones really doing the work of pushing us toward resolution. We can argue that this song starts in A minor and modulates to F major for the chorus, then pivots back to A minor for the verse. And this is because E7 is the chord through which we can get to A minor - but also we can get to F major thanks to the relationship of the V and the vi in A minor (the deceptive cadence). He uses that E7 again as a secondary dominant to approach the A minor once we shift to F major (V7/iii - V6-5/iii - iii - v7/V7 - V7 - I7) so we feel like we're in familiar territory, except that the tonal change has made the chorus feel hopeful as opposed to the shifting sand of the verse. This is really tight writing from Hozier and such a great, economical progression.

Yesterday I played a 2k game against a friend of mine :3

The game itself was interesting because the rules were the deployment zones were split to the table corners with two per player with it alternating so I had bottom left and top right corner. You would designate one as alpha and the other omega, then when deploying the unit you roll a d6 (1-3 alpha, 4-6 omega).

So for deployment, PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING WAS PUT ON ALPHA WITH GUILLIMAN ON OMEGA ALONE WITH SUPPRESSORS

luckily I had some units with infiltrate that I put on the side of guilliman to help him out a bit.

Meanwhile my friend had a good balance of units on each zone . ..

On turn 1 I ended up going first , which is what I wanted. I made the destroyers with dmg 6 my oath of moment target and ended up wiping it and the void dragon as my second oath target.

On his turn 1 he did some damage on my dread (6 wounds taken) and he moved his ctan void dragon and I overwatched the kratos and did 5 damage on him. And the void dragon did some damage on my ass. termies and I removed them in a way that made his charge a 12’ charge which he failed. On the other side he moved his warriors closer to guilliman.

On turn 2 I moved up more units to the objective near the alpha deployment zone for me. And had the void dragon killed through a bit of shooting and the void dragon exploded , which killed his doomsday ark and destroyed my dreadnought ;;

On the other side I went into the assault doctrine to advance and charge guilliman and the infiltrators and librarian into the warrior blob. I made the charge and spent a command point for precision on guilliman to kill the overlord. I used the emperors sword (14 a, 8, -2, 2) and ~11 attacks went through and 1 deb wound.

..THE OVERLORD SURVIVED !!

By turn 3 we were trading units, with him taking more losses than me but in points it was going 9 for me and 17 for him. It was so over for me, or rather I thought it was lost.

However on turn 4 THINGS TURNED

At this point I was able to move most of my units from alpha deployment into 3 objectives and guilliman and his group killing enough to out compete the warrior oc for that obj. So in primaries I scored max and in secondaries I got investigate signals and assassinate, AND I SCORED MAX FOR THAT TOO BRINGING ME UP 30 POINTS

at that point it was going like 43 to 31 in my favor with him having less and less units on objs.

We stopped at the top of turn 5 with me having units on 4 in of the 5 objs, the overlord finally dying , and him having only 2 units left. It was a pretty fun game that I couldn’t have guessed to have ended with me winning pretty good at the start with it going like 60-something to 30-something in my favor.

I typically play black templar with heavy emphasis on melee so it was diff playing primarily shooting and using librarians for once loll.

Summary:

All Rumi Yokoi wants to do is focus during school, but she is constantly distracted by Toshinari Seki, her neighboring classmate. Paying attention during class is the least of Seki's worries, as he obsesses over intricate setups created using an assortment of items, from an elaborate domino course on his desk to a treacherous war played out with shogi pieces. Yokoi desperately attempts to focus in class, only to be repeatedly sucked into his intriguing eccentricities; however, they always seem to end up with her getting in trouble with their teacher. Fortunately, lessons will never be dull with Seki's antics around!

Propaganda 1:

Seki-kun is the sort of anime that stays underrated because it seems overly simple, but it really shines in its simplicity. The episodes are short tales of Seki’s epic procrastination and they’re absurdly amusing. Both the opening and ending are super funny and really well-thought-out.

It’s the anime equivalent of a hard candy. You can have an episode at the end of the day or between tasks, and it entertains you well without asking for much.

Propaganda 2:

It is a really short anime with very short episodes but is still very entertaining, and we never hear the character whose name is in the title speak but we still get a really good feel of his personality. It’s just really funny and a lot of fun to watch.

Propaganda:

Ohtaka has done it again in creating a world full of characters with more depth than can be portrayed limited amount of screen time that each of them get. This leaves the viewer with a whole lot of potential to imagine on their own, even after watching. It’s kind of unique that it is set in the samurai era of Japan, but thanks to crystals left by the demons, motorcycles and flying castles are a thing outside the main characters’ mining village. There are plenty of gags throughout and dynamics between characters. Personally, I loved the second half a lot more than the first because of the cast introduced then. For example, the detail given to Kuroku with the lace she wears–it’s so intricately beautiful! Plus, most of the mechanics of how the world works is covered by then, so we can get into the action.

Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse

The third main character comes from a mentally abusive family situation, but the other two help her leave that situation. Main character’s child abuse is in flashbacks for character development to rise above that and break the cycle. Don’t know if gore or fan service need a trigger warning, typical shonen stuff.

Appreciating 1-A's loving Class rep

I understand why people are disappointed that Iida took a backseat after the Stain arc. And since the story shifted from the original trio to the New B3, and with the manga nearing its climax, the chances of Iida getting more focus again, are pretty much nil.

You could check out the stage plays for more Iida, though.

But let's keep in mind, that Iida has come a long way: Remember how condescending, rigid, and selfish he was during the entrance exam?

I appreciate Iida a lot for how willingly he acknowledges his mistakes, how he always internalizes his learned lessons, and how he does his best to do better.

And I love how supportive he is. He assures Uraraka that her motivation of becoming a hero to gain financial stability for her family, is just as perfectly respectable as any motivation, that is based on idealism. He calls Asui “Tsu-chan-kun” because while he's uncomfortable with calling her “Tsu-chan”, he wants to respect and accommodate her wish as much as he can.

The hero Ingenium: Always running to help lost children.

One of the funniest and simultaneously most heartwarming Iida-scenes to me, is when he tells Aoyama to “never stop twinkling – whatever that means.”

Aoyama stands out as an oddball, among oddballs, and none of his classmates has any idea what he's talking about - including Iida. But Iida's completely sincere with his statement: "Yes, do your best to go after your calling - I'll support you the whole way!"

Look at my son. He loves his friends so much.

Let’s be proud of what character development 1-A’s Class rep has achieved until now, and just headcanon a dozen of joyful varieties of the rest of his journey.

different anon from the 'writer rant' one but it did bring up a topic i find fascinating in fandoms like this re: copaganda and the like. prefacing this by saying that i in no way support cops or think this is a realistic way of portraying them. with that in mind, i feel like there's this common hang up in series like twc where the MC is some sort of law enforcement equivalent - whether its an actual cop or some ancient/medieval/future/alternate universe equivalent - people get frustrated when you aren't able to rebel against that enough. and this isn't just a twc thing either, i've seen the same kind of points made for all kinds of IF games. and like, i get the desire to and how most people would make their OC's decent enough people to recognize that kind of corruption for what it is, but if you're signing on to be a character that by default is in a law enforcement/adjacent position, and has some sense of pride in it, i'm not sure how the author is expected to properly account for that perspective that completely opposes all that.

like, in twc the MC almost always willingly signs on to the force, and even in the 'do it or go to jail' origin they still take pride in being able to help people now despite the circumstances of them joining up - any option to be extraordinarily wary of the agency or cops in general contradicts that unchangeable part of the MC's backstory and identity. and i get your point about mish/ka making an idealistic utopic version of things, but i don't really know what else is to be expected in a series that's effectively set up to be a supernatural crime romance? i don't want to make it sound like the frustrations/concerns are invalid because they're not at all! but i feel like by now the role law enforcement and the like plays in the detective's life is so established people have to suspend some of their beliefs about it to play a series that's always had a pretty pro-law enforcement concept/theme. idk if that makes any sense but thanks for letting me ramble

i see what you mean and i agree w you to some degree, but also, like i don't think it's a lot to ask of mis/hka to both be critical of c*ps in the story while also allowing the mc to be critical of them too. my criticism is less that this is c*paganda, because yes, any media that humanizes c*ps functions as that, but regardless of that, there should be some level of scrutiny from mis/hka's end.

the point i'm making is that mis/hka could've made ab*se of power an overarching theme connecting humans and supernaturals alike, by leaning into the idea that "c*ps are corrupt, and so is the agency – no matter if you're human or supernatural, any structure meant to protect the people is going to be corrupt because people naturally ab*se power" but she's not doing that. i highly doubt that she's playing the long con.

she's teasing the idea that the mc can have thoughts about hating their job and their position, can be afraid of supernaturals, can be reluctant to join the agency – so, if mc is allowed to do that, then what's the point? is it leading to anything? is the agency corrupt? are the c*ps corrupt? from mis/hka's asks, she insists that the agency are good people (and by default the c*ps too). so then, 'why even give us this road if it's not leading anywhere?' is my question

like regardless of if she wants us to read this as a utopia, it's not. if mc shoots a du mortain, it's just "more paperwork" – don't really spend too much time thinking about the fact that what mc perceives to be is a human was shot by them. just as example. mc can literally choose in b3 to wipe bobby's brain – a c*p actively silencing a journalist (whoa we haven't seen that anywhere have we!). not to mention the like military grade stun volts that agents can just have and use on people. (also the t*rture.) i could go on forever but you get what i mean

again, i really do get what you're trying to say, but saying "this is c*paganda, what do you expect" and shutting down all discussion about expectations of the series isn't really the best way to approach it imo. you can and should examine media past the surface level thought of "this is c*paganda" – yes, we know that. you should counter with, and here's why! and as for what i expect – nuance. i expect a nuanced approach.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Cute! Its my first Kirby game in forever (last game was on the DS) Again its cute, fun, funny and its body horror for kids!

Bayonetta 3

I've watched the previous two games so this was my first time playing a Bayonetta game. I was worried about getting into its combat so I played in casual for most of it. Did play in standard later and it turns out I was doing well lol

The story and ending was..something tbh I expected a lot based on the past two. Still I had fun as a newcomer and I enjoyed the customizing.

I was surprised at how its a linear game and a pretty quick main story. And the missions are there to build more playtime.

the main story i liked, it was nice getting to know Zack and seeing characters from the og 7 in a different perspective.

I wish that the story slowed down, so to get to know other characters more esp ones that Zack meets for the first time (Cissnei, Aerith and Cloud) and parts that were just skipped/skimmed through like Costa del Sol vacation time or when Zack inherits the buster sword after getting back to Midgar etc.

I also liked pointing out stuff I can connect to the og 7 :D

I will say I had a lot of fun with K2, such as the cabaret club minigame coming back, taking a lot of selfies (esp in front of dead bodies - Killer Kiryu) and the Majima saga. But unfortunately so far it takes last place out of the RGG games for me.

The main story didn't have a focus on the multiple plots and just revealed all the plot twists at the end.

Ryuji, hes hot but I came to conclude that hes very overhyped. He didn't have that much screen time :/ If it weren't for his popularity and spin-off appearances, I would've forgotten about him.

And I think major of all of why its last place is THAT ending...what. Like really a fake bomb? And did they have to make out?

This is the gayest game I've ever played.

I honestly feel betrayed I wasn't given a yaoi warning while starting up the game. I hear that 3 is infamous for some stuff and can be quite divided between fans. BUT bro its a game WORTH PLAYING play it for dad Kiryu time, play it for Mine lol JUST PLAY IT.

Gameplay wise it was fun. Really like how interesting it was to play as different people and how they experience Kamurocho in their own lives. Cool change to always playing as Kiryu and from Kiryu's pov. Akiyama and Tanimura were fun to play as especially Tanimura's radio thing which I found interesting. Saejima's section I felt was limited, I think the police guarding everywhere scared me away from doing his substories; so I ended finishing his part earlier compared to everyone :( (luckily I got to do his side stuff at the finale part)

And I realized at the end I struggled with switching and adapting between each character's style. Because of that I very stuffed up at the final bosses and stuffed up so bad that I forgot how to play as Kiryu..

The story is..interesting lol It is definitely soap opera-ish. I actually got into it at the start and the part where Hamazaki spilled the tea but because of the freaking rubber bullets twist I couldn't take it seriously towards the end like I even laughed and was just howling. There were scenes where it was just presented dramatically, like theres one where it zoomed into peoples faces with a sfx which instantly made me think of those Indian soap opera memes lmao

Very recently finished the main story. And honestly I forgot how the story goes lmao its a very long game. The character profile mind map from would've really helped and also summaries like in 0 too (which I'm guessing is an improvement since that came out after 5)

It was fun how each character came with a second game (such as Saejima's Hunting Simulator for the Nintendo Wii and Project Diva)

The enemy encountering is very annoying /: separate enemies being close by each other in the same area ughhhh

I can't for the life of me remember where I heard this but I'm pretty sure it was an ME/CFS forum of some kind. I remember this discussion around some connection between fibro and ME/CFS and frequently getting inexplicably ill as a child. I want to know how many people relate to this because it definitely happened to me and I thought it was just normal. I remember at least a few people saying they related when I first saw it discussed

I can't remember how frequently it would happen but it was off and on from very early childhood until my teens (then it became much less common, and I no longer get sick that way at random). I'd get a fever, chills, headache, body aches, fatigue, vomiting, dizziness, like having a really shitty (quite literally) stomach flu or something. My body seemed to be fighting hard against something but even if I was around others I was never contagious

Normally the course was about the same. It could last anywhere between 3 and 8 days. I'd have a fever of at least 101.5 degrees and no more than 104. I'd be up all night, fall asleep on the bathroom floor. It took 2-4 days before I could eat somewhat normally again. I'd go to the doctors sometimes when it happened and my stomach seemed fine but somehow I'd often have things like throat infections and double ear infections.

I see a specialist for my ME/CFS and he's an infectious disease specialist. First thing he does when you're on his (2 year😬) wait list is send you to get labs and test for antibodies for strains of illnesses that are often seen in pwME. Things like HPV and coxsackie (hand foot and mouth disease) strains. I've never had HMFD but my antibodies suggest that coxsackie b3 is the "dominant" virus at the root of my ME though I have multiple strains that play a part. My specialist is quite sure I would've contracted this in childhood when most people do. You can get it from tap water even, or natural bodies of water, as well as from things like playing in the dirt (I'm told I liked to eat mud and they would just fucking let me 💀💀💀).

I bring that up because if that's what caused the sporadic illnesses then I really want to know if anyone who may relate had previously contracted some of the same illnesses, maybe HFMD or any forms of HPV (mono is a big one). Especially any enteroviruses (viruses existing in the gut). On the Wikipedia page for enteroviruses here you'd most easily identify something you've had if you go to the section: Diseases Linked to Enterovirus Infection. The last bullet point (citation 51) credits a trial performed by my specialist in 2007 for the hypothesis that these viruses can play a major role in ME/CFS

Though like me, you could always carry antibodies for viruses linked to ME/CFS without even knowing it. Just curious because I've been thinking about it a lot

It’s all about the win!

Ok guys, so this is my first fic here :3 (and possibly the last one for quite a while 😅).  I had plenty of time on my hands because of hurricane Ian, so I decided to use all that time to make this!  This is almost 3,000 words long 😅(2,824 to be exact), so I understand if you want to skip to the end (the tickles start after the third dot cut off that looks like this: …………………….. 

(also there will be a cut off at the beginning because I would feel bad about making people scroll through all of this if they don’t want to)

There are probably plenty of spelling errors, but I am too tired of writing to check it over, sooooo 😅

“Oh shut it will you, we’re trying to play table turf over here.”

After the Squid Beak Splatoon gave Deep Cut back the treasure they wanted (which is really just a giant shaver, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder), Frye decided to challenge Agent 3 to get the pieces back from them again.

Agent 3 actually ended up accepting the offer because they “had nothing better to do” (but really they just wanted an excuse to hang out with the idols).  As stoic as they are, they are actually a very fun loving, chaotic cephalopod on the inside like the rest of splatville’s residents, they just have trouble showing it.

So the agent fought them again and again, winning every single time, with barely a scratch on their person. Shiver and Big Man, who were at first fine with and almost enthusiastic about challenging the agent again, quickly got tired of repeating the battles.  

Big Man stopped first, which makes sense considering his distaste for violence.  “Aye Ayeeeeee (I don’t want to fight, I just want to hug and hang out)”.  The agent happily accepted this offer of course, and gave Big Man his piece of the treasure back.

Shiver, who hypocritically scolded Big Man for giving into the enemy, was the second to agree to stop fighting two days later, stating “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is dumb” and “I don’t have time for idiocracy”(which translates to: I am too lazy to come up with a new strategy, so I don’t care about this anymore).  The agent just shrugged at their excuse and gave them their peice of the treasure back too.

Frye, being the stubborn instigator that she is, refused to give up and refused to take the treasure back until she won, which led to the situation Deep Cut was in right now, with Frye complaining to the other two members who were just trying to have a peaceful, private table turf battle on the ground in Alterna.

“You know, if you really want to beat them that badly, then you really should change your set up.  They know every move you are going to make before hand, so now the only challenge they have is beating their previous win time.” Shiver stated as they placed a splatana card down on the board.

“But I figured that if I keep doing things the same way the agent will eventually get bored and let me win.” said Frye nonsensically as she sat down next to her friends.

“Oh come on, you know that would never work.  If anything they would give up out of pity for your voluntary stupidity. Ooo, that kinda rhymes!” said Shiver as Big Man finished his turn and they got ready to place down another card.  They seemed to be winning the match, so Frye’s complaining wasn’t as annoying to them as it normally was.

“But if they would actually do that they would have done it already, now I actually have to create a new strategy.” Frye stated as she pouted and crossed her arms.

“Aye aye aye aye.  Aye aye aye. (When you are coming up with your new strategy, make sure you remember to keep their hero suit abilities in mind.  The more they upgraded that suit the easier our fights became for them.)” suggested Big Man.  Then it was his turn again, and also the final turn of the match.

“Aye Aye! (I’ve been preparing the whole match for this moment!) Aye aye ayeee! (Brace yourself for my special attack: myself!)”

“NOOOOOO” exclaimed Shiver, as she realized that throughout the whole match the smaller moves Big Man made were all just to build up enough special points for a powerful final attack.  Big Man had placed the card with his own image on it down and won the match.

“Aye Aye! (See, you have to always watch your opponent!)”

Frye sat there thinking for a moment, with a hand up to her face to display the most thoughtful looking expression she could.  Then she got up, saying “I guess you guys are right, it’s stakeout time! I’ll see you later, hopefully with some new info and a new plan! WAHAHAHAHA!”

Frye then walked a few paces away (in order to not ruin the mock table turf battle the others set up) and threw one of Deep Cut’s signature smoke bombs down.

“I’ll bet you’ll miss me!” *KABOOM*

“Aye aye! (We will!)  Aye aye aye, aye aye! (Make sure you don’t bother the agent too much, we’re friends!)

“Aye, aye? (Shiver, do you think she’ll listen?)”

“No, probably not, now give me a rematch!”

“Aye! (Sure!)”

“Hehehehe, now where could they be?” Said Frye about a half an hour later, eating a squid-made(not made of squid, made by squids) version of the steak humans used to eat(because of course she had to bring steak to a stake out, she’s Frye).

She suddenly saw movement in the corner of her eye, and angled her self so that she was still hidden behind the human structure she chose while she was watching her target.

Agent three surged out from the “Simply Zipcastic” kettle for the upteenth time, pepped up from using the thrilling zip caster again.  Small fry happily jumped out of the agent’s backpack, excited to run around after being cooped up in the waiting room of the test.

The little salmonoid ran around in circles for about a minute while the agent watched, amused.  Then, all of a sudden, the little guy managed to get itself under the agent’s oversized hero gear and- oh what do we have here?

The agent started thrashing around, seemingly losing almost all of their control as they tried to carefully get the small fry out of their shirt. They were laughing throughout the whole ordeal, and their rare smile was plastered on their face, as wide as it could possibly be.

“Wahaha, that was quick!  I found their weakness before I could even finish my steak!” Frye thought as she shoved the rest of the steak into her mouth.  

“It’s time to go make a plan! WAHAHA- oops wait, I probably shouldn’t use this if I want to stay discreet.” Frye put the smoke bomb she almost used by reflex away and whispered “I bet you’ll miss me” as she left the unsuspecting agent and went to go get her friends to help her enact her plan.

“I think that is enough for today little buddy.  Let’s go report to the captain before we go back to Splatsville.”

Agent 3 and small fry had just finished patrolling Alterna, and they were ready to go home for the day.  As much fun as the agent had doing this, they found ranked battles even more entertaining.

Little buddy nodded their head, agreeing with the agent, and jumped into their backpack again.  The agent got ready to super jump, already in their cephalopod form, but then-

*KABOOM*

The agent got blown away suddenly and face planted onto the floor as they changed back into their kid form out of shock.  Little Buddy freaked out and jumped out of the backpack to make sure they were ok.

“WELL THAT WAS PRETTY DUMB, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?” exclaimed Shiver as the three members of Deep Cut ran over to make sure the agent wasn’t hurt by their smoke bomb.

“SORRY I DIDN’T MEAN TO THROW IT SO CLOSE!” responded Frye as she worriedly looked over 3.  

“AYE AYE!? (ARE YOU ALRIGHT!?)”

“I’m fine….. really, just stop screaming please.” said Agent 3 as they struggled to get off their face.

Deep Cut helped the agent stand up and brushed the fake snow off of them.

“Are you sure you’re alright, we can take you back to Splatsville if you need us to, in fact I can even call- Nope, don’t bother, I’m fine.”  the agent interrupted Frye’s rambling, not wanting her to worry too much, as they really were perfectly fine, and had went through worst in the past.

“Ah, okay, thank Cod.”

“…..”

There was an awkward silence for a moment, due to Deep Cut forgetting what they originally came to do and the agent still being kind of shy around the idols. Small Fry calmed down by this point, as it was used to Deep Cut and did not view them as a threat.

“Do you guys need something from me? I was just going to do some ranked battles, so I don’t have anything important to do if you want my help.” said agent 3(despite being shy around them, they really wanted to hang out with Deep Cut more).

“Oh right, do your thing Big Man!”

“Aye aye?(Are your sure I should do this right after what happened?)

“Yes, they’re fine, just do it!”

“Aye aye! (Okay, here I go!) Aye aye, aye aye! (Prepare yourself, Agent 3, for the Manta family hold!)”

“Wait what- WHOA!” exclaimed Agent 3, as Big Man somehow managed to wrap the tips of his fins around the agent’s wrists and hold their arms above their head.

“G-guys what are you doing? Wait you are not actually going to try to rob me are you?” The agent went from nervous to unimpressed in a matter of seconds and raised an eyebrow at the idols.

All three idols expressed their disdain for the idea of that at the same time.

“What, no, believe it or not we have standards!”

“Aye! (Of course we won’t!)”

“We would never rob you 3! We only take things that you and the others didn’t claim yet!”

“….”

“Ok fine, we won’t take things unless we know they are not owned, don’t give me that look guys.” said Frye as the others joined 3 in giving her an unimpressed look.

“That doesn’t matter now anyway, what matters is what I am about to do!  I know your weakness 3, and unless you concede to me I will- AYEE HAHAHA”

Agent 3 interrupted Frye yet again. Their sudden outburst was caused by Shiver, who had gingerly stroked behind both of the agent’s ears at the same time with their claws.

“Oh my Cod, you really are super ticklish! This should be fun~”

“Hey Shiver, I was supposed to go first!” Frye pouted as she got her own fingers ready to strike. “Oh whatever. Get ready to concede 3, because here comes my tickle attack!”

Frye stuck her hands under the agent’s jacket, and immediately went to work scribbling all over their stomach, a spot she already knew was weak on the agent from watching them earlier.  Shiver resumed their own tickling as she did this, scratching behind their ears much faster than before, but still keeping it light and gentle in order not to hurt them.

“HAHAHA WAHAIT GUYS I’M TOO HEHE TIHICKILISH FOR THIHIS! EHEHE”

“Holy sea cow, you have to be the most ticklish person I ever met 3.” said Shiver as they traced the rims of 3’s ears from top to bottom, and then brought their hands further down to stroke their neck.

“For eel! You still have time to concede you know, I will happily take the W if you are willing to give in.” said Frye with a smirk on her face as she ran her fingers up and down the agent’s sides.

In their hysterical frenzy, 3 tried to gather their thoughts together so they could form a coherent response.  On one hand, they were super ticklish and couldn’t stay still through this to save their life, but on the other hand they enjoyed the physical touch aspect of it and laughing like they never did in forever.  So, in a bold move that they might not have made if they were able to focus more they said:

“NEHEVER! DO YOUHOR WOHOR- WAHAIT NOT THERE AGAHAHAHA!”

“Oh my gosh, I can’t believe what I am hearing guys, what do you think of this?” Frye said as she moved back to their stomach, scribbling in little circles all over it’s surface.

“I honestly can’t believe they have the audacity to challenge us when they are this sensitive. I think somebody wants more tickles~” said Shiver as they grazed their fingers over their collar bone(well, where it would be if cephalopods had bones).

“Aye aye aye. Aye aye! (All I hear is cute giggling. So cute!)” said Big Man, keeping up his hold on the agent, who admittedly wasn’t thrashing as much as they normally would, almost as if they were putting in an effort into not kicking any of their attackers.

Frye then stopped tickling for a second and signaled for Shiver to stop too. The agent took the chance to catch their breath as the three idols worked together to take their hero jacket off whilst still keeping them in their hold.

The agent didn’t even realize that they were taking the jacket off until it was gone, and then they gulped with a nervous grin, realizing they may have bit off more than they could chew.

“You heard them guys, they said they want our worst~ Well let’s give them our worst!”

Immediately Frye went back to tickle the belly that was now fully exposed by their crop top, while Shiver decided to switch up spots and go for their back now that it was an easier target.

The agent immediately went into hysterical laughter at this, squirming uncontrollably.  They tried to look away so the others couldn’t see their face, but Frye wouldn’t let them(she really wanted to win).

“Nuh-uh, you don’t get to escape, you asked for this!” said Frye as she reached one hand up to tickle the exposed side of their neck so that they would look back.

“Aye ayeee! (You're so cute right now 3!) Ay ay~ (Coochie coo~) said Big Man, who was now having a harder time keeping them still, but was still was able to keep his hold on them.

“I am honestly already over the battle thing, but I figured this would be way too funny to skip over, and I was right~” said Shiver as they trailed their fingers up the agent’s sides to under the agent’s arms, causing them to squeal again.  

“Ooo, bad spot~”

“Hey, you better take that back Shiver, this is all about winning!” “Actually more accurately this is about me winning, since I was the only one that didn’t give up!” said Frye as she sped up her tickling, scribbling up and down their ribs before quickly returning to their belly.

“Excuse me, but we are helping you, so we should all get a win out of this!” said Shiver as they unconsciously sped up their own tickling, matching Frye’s pace.

“Aye aye, aye aye! (I honestly don’t care, this is too much fun!)”

“Seriously Big Man, don’t let her win like that!”

The three idols kept bickering amongst themselves until:

“WAHAHAHAHAHA I CONCEHEDE HEHAHAHA”

The idols remembered what they were doing again and immediately stopped tickling the agent. Big Man gently lowered them down to the floor and let them rest against him as an apology for the relentless attack.

“YES, I finally won!”

“Don’t you mean we finally won?”

“Aye aye! (That was fun!) Aye aye? (Are you okay 3?)”

“I-I’m okay… hehe” responded the agent tiredly as they got the last of the giggles out of their system.  Even though they literally couldn’t handle it anymore, they still had fun!  They would never admit that though.

“Wow, I’ve never seen you with a smile that large ever, could this mean that you actually enjoyed that~”

“NOPE, now if you excuse me, there is probably only about five minutes left in the rainmaker rotation and I want to get at least one match in before it ends!”

With a sudden burst of newfound energy, the agent rolled away from the idols, grabbed Small Fry(who had somehow fell asleep through all that commotion) and got ready to super jump away.

“B-Bye!”  they said, and then they finally super jumped back to Splatsville, completely forgetting to report to their captain beforehand.

“HEY, YOU FORGOT TO GIVE ME MY TREASURE BACK!” exclaimed Frye as she called out after them.

“Oh please, I am sure they will give it to you later, you know they would have given it to you if you just asked instead of tickling them to their wits end.”

“Oh please, don’t act like you didn’t have fun! Plus it is better this way because it is only worth it if the opponent gives in. It is all about winning!”

“Aye aye, aye aye aye? (Hey guys, did 3 just say that the rainmaker rotation would end in five minutes?)”

“…”

“OH CARP GO GO GO GO, WE ARE GOING TO BE LATE TO THE NEWS-”

ALRIGHT THEN, YOU ASKED FOR THIS

Cut again bc spoilers and there will be lots of shouting bc Mason's route is amazing. I think--both friend and romance--he's my fave in book 3.(Nate's still winning overall romance, but Mason wins b3) Warning: this clocks in at about 2700 words, just so you know what you're getting into. It's longer than a lot of my fics. xD

This is gonna be Kasey specific, obviously, even if all the high notes I love in general. There's just some... flavor to it bc of the way she's engaging his romance. (also, this is pretty stream of consciousness, so I can't promise smooth transitions😅)

The way just your touch helps when he's getting overwhelmed in Addie's room feels like a good place to start- NO WAIT. If you try to bluff about not being worried over the bounty and he calls you on it and swears to have your back. Half of why Kasey kissed him so hard there is it's her go-to reaction when Mason incites strong emotion in her, even if desire/attraction isn't precisely the right match for the moment.

I know I already screamed a lot about the bakery scene when the demo came out, BUT I finally settled on which option Kasey would pick there. She's still oblivious/in denial, so there's no hurt to Mason's "She's only seeing me naked," comment, and no confusion either. Lil Miss Snark shot back with the one about him seeing HER naked (which ooooooboy did that pay dividends later :3) and then didn't get anything flirty/snarky/teasing back (poor Haley, watching this unfold) and that confused her. Snark and innuendo has been their Thing since day fucking one. So the weirdness of leaving it like that has her on edge and makes her snappish and downright vicious with Bobby("I'd say it's a pleasure but we both know I'd be lying" and kicked him out of the station, it was great)and she genuinely can't figure out why it's bothering her that Mason didn't play along.

And then we get him actually using her name when she shows up at the Warehouse soaking wet and covered in plaster mud. Felt a little like someone had punched her in the lungs, she had to fight the reflexive urge to call him 'sunshine' and make the weirdness go away. And then on top of that he actually apologized--for something that didn't seem like a big deal to her, at least on the surface, but the way her heart skips a beat, maybe it did matter--and Kasey manages to actually be sincere for five minutes to accept the apology with 0 snark and explain about needing a place to stay etc. Insert some flirting/innuendo/giving Nate a headache while handing out flyers and she feels like their equilibrium is back. They're okay, they're good, still casual, though ngl it does feel nice to hear him say her name every once in a while....

And then. AND THEN. The Trapper fight. And Sin. and OH MY GOD. Mason throws himself in front of Trapper to protect her, gets zapped instead of her and she is just. Terrified isn't a strong enough word. She doesn't realize it's anything more than panic/adrenaline in the moment, but it's a miracle she didn't leap on that Trapper like a feral wolf. Which is only compounded when Sin shows up and Mason is afraid for her. He tries to hide it when he tells her to run, but her main hobby is people watching so good luck with that, buddy.

And with the adrenaline of the whole encounter, she hasn't even really had time to full unwind and process it before Mason is staring down Adam on her behalf.

Not only that but he's insistent on backing her up. Same guy who, what, six months ago(less?) "found this all unnecessary" and barely wanted anything to do with her is now adamant about watching her back and keeping her safe and then waits up super late for her to get home(whole separate screaming session about him considering this home) and doesn't feel a need for innuendo with her when they talk.

"Thrown for a loop" is an understatement. Flabbergasted, maybe works. For Kasey, anyway. I was having a meltdown about him being vulnerable with her wrt what he remembers of his past, and the crystal(he didn't even want her to look at when they first met) and then just saying a genuine goodnight without trying to get in her pants or anything. AMAZING.

And then his mood starts off weird at combat training and he's gruff and irritated(and MASON WITH A BUN. MASON WITH A BUN) and he's being grumpy bc he can't figure out why the thought of Sin taking her away from him is so terrifying.

The patrol loop after the blood drive is just.. hoo boy. Kasey was bitten on the wrist by Murphy and there have been some Moments with those scars on Mason's route and I got another one to add to the list

just that he's so gentle. That would be sweet from any of them but from Mason it makes me scream internally even before we get to the emotional KO that is

I love sO MUCH when gruff/abrasive characters are gentle with the people they care about, and not only is that happening here, he still warns her that just bc Bravo won't hurt her, there's not many other supernaturals that will care so she still needs to be cautious. (It's just a bonus--for me--that he's clearly affected by the conversation even if he's not sure why :3) And also!!! Kasey-specific note here: Her trust is not easily given. It was a cautious thing even before Bobby fucked her over in college, but him using her friendship like that really made her kinda hold people at arm's length, so the fact she trust Mason(and the rest of Bravo) with her literal life and her scars and other vulnerabilities is really uhhhh saying something even if she's denying what that something is

I played around a bit with Kasey's reaction to the stack of missing persons posters, and even if it's not the one I kept, Mason's reaction if you call him crying straight up slayed me

Just that mix of gruff almost-annoyance and "you clearly need me, I'm already on my way". (the others ask if you want them to come, Mason's just "yeah, I'm coming to see you")The beat between saying he doesn't like talking on the phone but will make an exception for you. The return to flirting/innuendo once you seem to be getting back equilibrium.

As I've mentioned, Kasey has Verda knowing about the supernatural, and that dinner with him and Eric was all kinds of awkward(she went slinky for her outfit bc this is Kasey)

BUT I very much enjoy both Eric's 👀👀👀 when Kasey pulled an "Idk what you're talking about" and a)Verda getting Mason to acknowledge there's a "Something" with the two of them even if he doesn't know what it is and b) Mason calling him on his reaction to the supernatural making him a not so-great-friend. BUT THE REAL KICKER came after, when they were leaving, and this happened

Just. He's essentially holding her hand. And he doesn't think to let go. Mason, who hates and is extremely pained by physical contact(he flinches when Adam touches him in one of the bff/ro scenes) willing maintain contact for several seconds and only withdraws when she says something. (I stand by my expectation Mason's gonna figure out What They Are before Kasey does, lmao)

I absolutely loved the car sex scene(she's been teasing him with that long enough xD), especially bc Kasey 100% told him to apologize to her car, but the biggest takeaway for purposes of this is HE HESITATES. He hesitates to just look at her for an extra few moments before kissing her again. (and btw I ran with each taking initiative and HOLY HELL this will be one of the few times I go with letting Mason have initiative instead of Kasey. Whew.)

And we gotta talk about Mason not wanting more cigarettes when Felix offers to buy the bc that's... for something that might look like a little moment it's undeniably huge. The cigarettes have been his source of comfort, the way he makes it easier to Deal With Everything and he just casually turns down getting more of them. Bc he has her now(new addiction, indeed). For such a quiet thing, it shouts about the changing nature of their relationship and I loved it.

I--once again--played with reactions to arriving at the warehouse bc Kasey's still figuring out how she feels about that so she has some leeway, and I gotta say I love how Mason just bluntly calls you on your shit any time you try to lie about being fine when you aren't.

I will never be over him having the same calming effect on the detective as they do on him. 🥺🥺🥺Kasey has this whole snarky tough girl thing going and even when she tries to hide it, he sees through the bs and comforts her. He's blunt but gentle and it makes me scream...

..buuuuuut not as much as Mason's POV on the building cave-in. :3

No, no, I'm fine :)

ABSOLUTELY PEACHY :))))))) Totally not wrecked at all, not laying on the floor screaming internally or anything, why do you ask? I'm such a sucker for the whole "joking pet name accidentally becomes actual sincere term of endearment" (see: Taviloth and "city slicker") and this made me just a bit feral. ALSO the parallel to the house Mirrors scene in book 2 is killing me. The day Kasey calls him sunshine with affection rather than teasing I will throw myself into the sun, it will be too much. (Super easy to picture one of those gut-wrenching comics using "You Are My Sunshine" with them, btw)

And the aftermath made me lose my gd mind.

Kasey: *tries to snark as a way of covering how much today fucked her up*

Mason: *calls her on it while also being ready to help.* And he's volunteering to help(after sticking himself in a corner at the breakfast earlier in the story so he wouldn't get asked to contribute)

No innuendo, just support, my HEART. Kasey Irene, HOW are you still in denial, you're smarter than this. Though I suppose I can give you a pass this one time considering how much pain you're in.

He's so worried he's not even thinking, just wants to keep her safe, and I swear somehow every time he uses her name it both add three years to my life and take one away.

This mental image. I can't. I had to go take a walk before I could finish, bc the mental image of Mason standing fully clothed and soaking wet in the shower with her just to offer support is TOO MUCH. It's too much, I can't handle it. (Especially when you put it next to this or the "me being naked is more important to you, right?" comment from the bakery scene. She's naked, he's not, and he doesn't even seem to care. my fucking HEARTTTTTTT )

He's sitting with her. Just the fact that he's staying is *inarticulate yelling* enough, but he's in a chair. Not sitting on the bed, not laying with her, sitting in a chair to be with her and keep an eye on her but give her space. And that "You don't have to stand guard" //"I know, but I sure as hell want to." Mason is so gonna figure out he's in love with Kasey before vice versa.

And now we come to the totally-not-a-date scene, where Mason will ask, unprompted and genuinely curious, what you're thinking about and, this being Kasey, there's some sarcasm/teasing in the following conversation, but it's also so comfortable.

This is just banter. They're bantering and playing around and just comfortable with each other in a way beyond what's usually the case for people who're just seeing each other naked. :3

I do love the lingering obliviousness. Sure, Mason, it's that the crystal's not as full as you thought. Not that Kasey's presence/touch helped you recover faster or anything. Even though that's happened MULTIPLE TIMES. (Nate would be smirking so hard if he'd witnessed this interaction)

The whole scene with Roshaun(sidenote: RAT BABIES! <3) and how Mason reacts to even the suggestion of being sedated/vulnerable has me 200% sure I'm gonna want to kill some people when we learn his backstory. This is practically a full on panic attack, like, what level of hell did he go through that it incites this strong an instinctive reaction even when he can't remember the details?! (Unfortunately, since he's been a vampire ~100 years, there's decent odds the people responsible are already dead, unless they're also supernatural. But if they're still alive they WON'T BE after Kasey and Mallory get their hands on them)

The way Kasey's touch settles him(again), the way he deliberately takes her hand and doesn't let go, like she's a lifeline(she probably is) "I asked you to come because I wanted you here" alksdafbalfbjabslk

Yes, sure, that applies in a "kiss/sex me right now, you handsome bastard" sense, but also in the sense of her just always leaping at the chance to spend time with him, regardless of if it will involve sex or not.

And then you get an actual genuine smile out of him, and more gentleness, and she doesn't know how to deal.

And then we come to this

where Kasey kisses the vampire harder to not have to deal with the possibility this is almost definitely more than just seeing each other naked. "No, no, nothing more than just that he's hot and we enjoy having sex and he's a really good kisser. No deeper than that."

The bff convo with Adam is so good, and Mason doesn't deny that the way Kasey "has him" is different from the rest of UB, and isn't sure how she feels about that and calls himself "too much of a fucking coward" to find out and aaaahhhhh this would have been Kasey's "tu omnia" moment if she would just WAKE UP and OVERHEAR the conversation. Why do you have to sleep so soundly baby girl???

Wrapping up with the party. oooh boy. "I wouldn't survive thirty seconds in this circus without you." Kasey, he's definitely serious and not joking.
