I kinda liked Madame Web. It worked fine as an origin story for Cassie:

1. I know they were some weird plot holes and things that could have been executed better. And since this movie was not a part of the mcu, the writers didn't have the excuse that they'd have to go through 50000 movies and shows to make sure there's no plot holes. They could have focused on their story and ensured it was solid. But alas in this house we give female led superhero projects a chance.

BUT

2. I liked how originally the disease was supposed to take her sight, and her mother fought to prevent that and she did. She'd have lost her sight and been a mutant (according to the comics) if her mother wasn't so dedicated to saving her. But she couldn't really escape her fate and eventually lost her sight in the final fight and the spiders gave her powers.

3. Ezekiel was a fun 'spider people' villain. There was something a little more scary about having a villain that uses physical combat and powers to fight 4 heroes with no powers / only precog or mental powers. And him brutally killing the 4 of them in Cassie's visions was kinda dark. Ezekiel is a dope villain name for some reason too.

4. Peter Parker being only the side plot was kinda fun. I loved a young Mary Parker played by Emma Roberts and the constant little hints about who her baby is. The last scene where Anya (I think) tells Cassie that Ben is enjoying being an uncle with none of the responsibility and Cassie responds with like.... that's what he thinks. That was oddly depressing bc she knew Mary wouldn't live long despite her being perfectly fine.

5. The time setting was a win for me. And all the 2000s bops. I need a coat like Cassie's.

6. The teens behaved like teens. They weren't over the top like Pretty Little Liars or Euphoria or something. But they also weren't as unique as Kamala. They were just normal girls, who were good enough people that I'd believe they'd become the superheroes Cassie envisioned.

While in the theater seeing "Madame Web" for a second time, I got to thinking how in a better, brighter universe, there would have been some kind of fast food tie-in promotion for this movie, with little Madame Web toys for children. okay so i watched madame web in theatres last weekend and omfg?? they were so cute and definitely giving me major throuple vibes i canttt

also i havent written in awhile i am so sorry! and im also so sorry if this isnt what you wanted from me, also this is just a quick writing i did in 30 minutes so PLEASEE bear with me 🙏

also title is from the mazzy star song obv and it has nothing to do with the song whatsoever i just didnt know what else to put.

it was a simple thing.

nothing to be jealous over, or make a fuss about, but yet anya was sitting alone in the swivel seats, staring across the diner.

staring at them.

mattie and julia, the three of them had just met in a life or death situation, and that was just what made this more special.

compacting.

primal, even.

she was jealous, jealous of those boys at the booths cheering the two girls on as they danced on the large-sized table.

julia, with her button up shirt tied up into a hairtie, showing off her stomach, asked anya to come join in on the fun. but all anya could do was nod a simple “no” in response.

her glasses were in the side pocket of the button up, not wanting to seem “nerdy” or “uncool” infront of the boys.

but a real man wouldn’t mind that.

a real man would love her nerdiness, her innocence, the way she tried resolve every situation with her apologies.

a real woman, wouldn’t care at all.

mattie, with her flashy attire and skateboard, danced with julia while laughing off. anya couldn’t just see how it was fun to dance on tables for boys, it just felt too seen.

mattie didn’t care what people thought of her, but anya did. every once in awhile she would catch one of the boys give her a dirty look, as if she was too eye-catching.

but since when was that a problem?

again, a real man wouldn’t mind that.

a real man wouldn’t care about the way she shows off, the way she acts and plays around, but these weren’t real men were they? no, they were boys.

a real woman, wouldn’t care at all.

every once and awhile the two would glance back at anya, finishing up her food. mattie would shrug, pulling julia back into a dance, while julia would crook a soft but sad smile, her guilty conscience taking over.

it wasn’t until anya caught one of the boys staring up julia’s skirt, and one of the boys eyeing too hard at matties pair, that she had finally decided to shut this shit-show down.

“alright come on.” anya scolded, she felt bossy, and mean, but this was just plain out weird. who would she be to not say anything?

mattie just looked at julia like she didnt hear anything behind her, whispering to her quietly, “pretend you don’t know her” and julia just responded with a look of both worry and guilt.

“toxic” by britney spears was still blaring through the diner’s speakers as anya caught one of the guys eyeing julia a little too hard. with too much sexual intention. she spoke up once more, this time towards the boys instead of the two dancing ontop of the table.

“could you quit that? you would think that guys like you would have the decency to not look at a girl’s body like that? it’s just fucking disrespectful. come on, can we just go?” anya finished off, looking at the two with almost a pleading look.

the two just stopped, hopping off of the table. mattie tipped the waiter, and julia untied her shirt, reapplying her glasses.

“im really sorry.” was the first word said when the three left the diner together. which had, obviously, came from julias mouth.

“for?” was all anya could respond with, she was just too angry. not from the two, but from that booth. she never thought that people could just be so disrespectful and disgusting.

“i.. nevermind.. ” julia answered, she could feel herself about to cry, cutting herself off. mattie was completely silent as she kicked rocks in the dirt, suddenly feeling a warm touch to her cold hand.

anya was grabbing her hand, bring it to a soft hand-hold. mattie glanced over, seeing her holding julia’s aswell. “well there’s nothing to be sorry for, it’s not your fault people are just assholes” mattie responded to julia.

“can.. can i be honest with you both?” anya asked, scarce and worrisome.

the two nodded, looking back at anya as she spoke. “i feel like.. i have this responsibility to look out for you both.. and not just because i feel like its right, but because i feel like ive genuinely caught a liking to you guys. the both of you.”

the rest of the walk back to the forest was silent, just quiet steps through leaves and sticks.

and it stayed that way, stayed that way until mattie made her move.

she pulled anyas face towards her own, kissing her softly on the lips, and all anya could do was kiss back because she knew thats what she wanted. what she has been thinking about since they first met.

julia just stared from far off, stared at the two. she didnt know what to do, if she should feel left out or not. but even then, she didn’t have time to think as anya pulled away from mattie, then pulling julia into her lips.

it was different than kissing a boy, mattie thought, while julia thought about how it was different overall, as she has never kissed anyone before.

but a thought that the two both shared was the fact that her lips were soft, beautiful, like pillows.

but a thought that the three of them shared was love

and that thought was strong. but there’s nothing wrong with that.

Madame Web Production BS

Just to be clear, I love this movie. But I love talking about what a dumpster fire it was behind the scenes so let me point everything wrong with my favourite of the year so far. SPOILERS!

• Cass’s personality is not fleshed out… that’s a major problem. I feel like they just told Dakota Johnson to do what she wants the whole movie BUT then right at they end they decide to give Cass a personality completely ripped from the comics. And it doesn’t work with the way Dakota was playing her the whole movie and these no character development over the course of the movie, so it’s actually a little scary seeing her switch at the end.

• None of the characters have a personality actually. The villain was the worst to be fair because I still don’t really understand his motives. Like… you tricked and murdered a pregnant woman and a few others because your family was poor? And you think Spidey strength will fix that? Um, ok. So is mine but I don’t know.. wouldn’t kill anybody over it though.

• I hate Sydney Sweeney’s image. And it’s not her or her marketing teams fault. It’s her fans’ and her directors. She’s constantly purposely dressed sexy in movies (even when dressed down like a nerd, she’s still sexualised) but then is playing a child. Like wtf. They did it to her in Euphoria and they’ve done it to her again in Madame Web. And how Sydney dresses for press also is clearly influenced by directors and fans’, like the look isn’t just what they want for her characters but also how she’s expected to be irl too. It’s kind of sick and related to how paedophilic things are still normalised in our society today, I’ll have to say that rant for another day though.

• Why does it feel like nobody cared about this movie? The script feels like the first draft that was supposed to have rewrites but nobody was bothered. Same with the editing, everything but especially the dialogue and music feels so placeholder, why was it in the finished project? Like even the Google cast page is not finished, only the leads have their character names on there. Zosia Mament (the villain’s assistant) is credited as fucking ‘Actress’.

• Why was Cassie able to fly to Peru when she’s a wanted criminal? Why is she flying to Peru when talking about laying low because she’s a WANTED CRIMINAL??!

• The writers constantly forgetting what year it is was hilarious and the editors just throwing one Brittney Spears song in and a few Beyonce billboards in to cover up their mistake is also hilarious.

• ACTUALLY, apparently the whole reason the movie was set in 2003 was because the director really wanted to use Toxic in the movie. Because apparently you can’t play a song in a movie if the movie doesn’t take place in the same year the song was released 🤡

• BUT Toxic was released in 2004 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

• The writers taking the time setting as a opportunity to reference Garfield’s Spider-Man but then also forgetting that that SM was born in 1995 🤡🤡🤡🤡

• Yes I checked, they specifically wanted to reference Garfield’s Spidey, but through editing they realised their mistake and started trying to make it look like they were talking about Tom Holland’s SM instead, which risks breaking some rules with Marvel… AND THAT SPIDEY WAS BORN IN 2001 SO THEY STILL FUCKED UP. The fact that a simple Google and common sense (like they must of know Garfield’s fist SM movie took place in 2012 and if he was born in 2003, he would of been only 9 years old in 2012 😑) would of fixed this problem is again hilarious.

• Obviously the biggest goof was Dakota Johnson not realising she’s not in a Marvel movie and firing her agent the same day the trailer got dropped 🤡

• She also might be in trouble for posting the teaser on her Instagram and tagging Marvel before the trailer dropped (so before she found out), but I don’t think Dakota manages her own socials tbh. That post was removed then put back up without a Marvel tag.

• The press tour is amazingly bad, I love it.

• Not seeing the girls turn or become heroes was probably the worst part about this movie but I knew that going in so didn’t mind too much. But the real issue is with how Sony keeps straight up lying to their audience with their trailers. Obviously some studios add somethings into their trailer to create more interest for the audience but that’s not what Sony is doing, they are straight up LYING. And they do it so often now I want to fight whoever is in charge of that, they are the reason this movie flopped.

• Them and the writers… and whoever decided to hire the Morbius writers again, everyone there deserves to lose their jobs.

• The only reason I want this movie to do well is because I want Madame Web to have more movies with Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, Isabella Mercer, Emma Roberts and Celeste O’Connor all returning. But I really don’t see that happening now, I can’t see Dakota signing another contract with Sony or doing everything to get out of this contract if it’s not over yet.

• The fact that they had to dub the villain’s lines makes me so confused to why he was hired? He didn’t even give a good performance, not saying he’s a bad actor (I’ve heard he’s great on other movies), but he really didn’t do anything in MW.

• And the part with the FBI agent and the villain had me so confused too. Like, did she seduce him to find out information about him? Because it makes sense that the FBI would be suspicious of this guy. But then did he see through her act and decide to at least get laid before killing her and stealing her passcode? But everyone is saying he seduce her for her passcodes and yeah I’m confused.

• The problem is the pacing and how everything that needs explaining isn’t, but everything that doesn’t need an explanation IS explained. And too much.

“He worked with my Mom in this place looking for this spider right before she died”

That’s not the exact quote but it’s pretty close to and that’s less than 5 minutes in. Ok thanks spoiling the whole movie to me. I really didn’t know a movie could spoil the movie to me.

It all started in the hospital. You woke up to find a beautiful paramedic tending to your injuries. "For a cat" she shakes her head and laughs, "you got hit by a car, trying to protect a cat"

"It was a cute little cat" you shrug, "I couldn't let it get hit"

"Well it was my cat" the woman answers, "Name's Cassie. I feel like I owe you something for saving my cat"

"How about a cup of coffee once I'm released?" you answer back. Needless to say, she couldn't help but agree.

Julia Cornwall / Spider Woman

It all began on that the worse day of your life. You got bit by a weird looking red and blue spider and then some of the jocks dragged you out to the local diner. Your luck seemed to turn around when three beautiful girls came in. One of them shyly approached you and asked you to dance with her. Little did you realize that she was meant to be your girlfriend one day and that you were also going to be her crime fighting partner due to the spider bite from earlier.

Anya Corazon / Arana

You were her neighbor, you just moved in when the whole events with the killer spider person happened. You helped her escape the fireworks factory but you were burned in the process. Anya stayed by your side as you recovered. Her heart only grew as she spent time with you.

Mattie Franklin / Spider Woman

She meets you later on. She was on patrol when you came to her aid. Your spirit and willingness to fight even with a lack of powers made her fall for you.
