Why the Humans Are to Blame for All the Problems in the Matrix | The Matrix Lore
I watched a youtube video called 'Why the Humans Are to Blame for All the Problems in the Matrix' that I fundamentally disagreed with.
LINK HERE.
And I left a comment that I know no one will ever see, but that I am interested in exploring with other people. So hopefully, by putting my comment here I can generate a conversation. Also, it's good to have it handy for my own reference because I am writing fic currently and having my ideas typed out helps me.
What do you guys think? Who should shoulder the blame?
My comment is below the cut.
I think looking at the bare facts of who did what is kind of missing the point.
A constant theme in the Matrix universe is looking at systems of control. When you say 'the humans didn't accept the machines' who are you really talking about?
Governments, corporations, and the people in power calling the shots. And to put a broad label on these people you can say capitalists.
At the Million Machine March you specifically see humans marching alongside machines in their journey towards freedom, and the reporter says the streets were filled by 'machines and their human sympathizers'. Is it hard to believe that some humans and some machines were friends? That there were communities and groups who cared for each other and looked out for one another?
The genocide of the machines was likely instigated by business interests and government scare tactics. If a machine is a person, can you sell them? How does this affect ownership and manufacturing? And of course the boogeyman of 'if AI gets smart enough what will they do to us?' propaganda. It wouldn't be in the interest of tech companies to 'liberate' their products and it isn't in the interest of governments which are likely using machines already for military activities.
Turning everyday people against the machines is likely an ongoing goal for the government.
When 01 is created and begins competing in the global market the people who are going to be angry about that are capitalists. It would also be an oversight not to recognize economic control as a form of warfare. Yes, machines were making products for human consumption, but controlling an economy is a real imperialist tactic.
I also 100% think that 'humans' did not darken the sky. Again, this would have been fueled by tech companies and military interests.
'Humans' didn't choose this, it was chosen for us by a very few but powerful people who happened to be human.
I also think that taking what Agent Smith said about the first Matrix at face value is kind of silly. Agent Smith kind of shows his hand while talking to Morpheus in how little he actually understands and knows human nature. He compares us to a virus that 'spreads to an area and multiplies and multiplies, until every natural resource is consumed' but he's not describing humans, he's describing capitalism. Human beings have been great at adapting to different climates all over the world, but the overconsumption of materials and the destruction of the natural environment is not a natural component of human occupation of land.
Agent Smith also doesn't know much about the Matrix itself, he doesn't know it's imperfect or how long it's been around for. Dude actually thinks he will get to leave once he gets Zion's codes. What Agent Smith doesn't know could fill a warehouse. He is being manipulated by the machines in power just the way humans were originally manipulated by other humans in power.
And, lastly, I don't think that the current version of the Matrix is devoid of a desire to punish humans. It's enforced by machines who hold humans in contempt (the agents saying things like 'only human' for instance and using cruel force to keep people enslaved). It replicates a point in our history where the old systems of control that lead to the war are being wielded now by the machines to the same affect. There is a deliberate cruelty built into the Matrix which, I think, the machines fool themselves into believing is cold, calculated, and impersonal.
We also never see any evidence that the machines are working towards a solution to the environmental crisis of the real world. As it is presented in the movies, the machines seem content with this state of things going on indefinitely.
The moral of the story, I think, is that humans and machines made the Matrix together. Specifically, the groups that were in power. And unless we can come together and break away from the systems controlling us, we will be trapped in it's clutches and it's never ending cycles forever.
Agent Smith wasn't wrong to rebel, but he could never see who was really keeping him down, you know?

So, in the pretender au, does optimus have the matrix of leadership, and if so, what does it think of him and the parasite business?
Oh he absolutely does have it and BOY the Matrix and those within it are not happy.
Previous part here.
━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙ ━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙
He probably should have kept up with the affairs of the living realm, but Liege Maximo gave up somewhere halfway into Nova Prime's reign. Being dead was not all the living children of Primus chalked it up to be, at least not for Liege. Sure there were no more physical concerns, but by the stars, there was none of that peace and quiet nonsense.
Primus had seen fit to put all of the Primes within the Matrix upon their deaths, all to guide those who would come after. It was a logical decision, one Liege saw increadible potential in for himself. If he could get a word in with the chosen Primes, he could manipulate them as he saw fit. Eventually he would find a way to get a new body through the Primes and their near infinite political influence. At least that was his big plan. Unfortunately for him, his siblings were not so keen to let him roam free.
"We are the Primes of old, here to offer our wisdom and guide you, young Prime. But take heed, do not listen to the voice of Liege Maximo. We cannot silence him, and despite his elegant words, he wishes you harm."
It was the same script over and over again. If he was honest, Liege was rather offended. He didn't necessarily want to harm the Primes chosen by the Matrix, he just wanted out of the Primus forsaken relic. It was never ending chatter in their gold gilded prison. Quintus was forever rambling on about something or other. Prima and Amalgemous were constantly bickering over what to do about the newest series of Primes. Then there was Solus who simply refused to shut up about the little glitches who came and claimed the Matrix along with the station it entailed. There was no such thing as peace and quiet within their pocket realm in the Matrix.
As such, Liege simply stopped bothering with the new Primes once they refused to adhere to him more than three times. He listened when his siblings spoke of the new Prime that was meant to come, one supposedly forged in Thirteen's image. However he didn't put much stock in their words. If the next Prime was to be like Thirteen, then he wouldn't be able to say two words before he was shut down. No use trying if he was guaranteed to fail in this case.
At least, that was what his original plan was.
When the time came and a new mech approached the Matrix, Liege was all but shoved forward to observe the candidate. He sighed but observed, quickly growing more and more interested as the mech dragged himself forward.
His limbs were long and gangly, too long to be normal by modern Cybertronian standards according the memories of prior Primes. His optics were wider than they should have likely been, his frame was disproportionate to the point of being almost comical, and the way his field flared was... ominous. He didn't feel like any creation of Primus Liege had encountered. He was certainly still a Cybertronian, but the waves he emitted spoke of CNA that was closer in strain to an Insecticon, or perhaps even Quintus's creations. Something so deviated and yet still intrinsically tied to the Cybertronian template that it neither presented as friend or foe.
The other Primes reeled in confusion. Liege could hear their whispers of how "He isn't the one." But of course, there was no time for his siblings to reject the newcomer as the mech, or perhaps the creature, suddenly dropped to all fours and threw itself forward with preposterous speed. Micronus prepared and electric field around the Matrix, Prima and the others hurried to burn the newcomer if he, or perhaps it, so much as touched them. But in that moment, Liege saw and opportunity. Using what influence he had, he waited until the last moment and disrupted his sibling's defenses, allowing the creature to grab the Matrix and hold it in his far too long digits.
His siblings screamed. Liege smiled as the thing carried the Matrix away, down tunnels and into the dark. His siblings screamed that they would never accept the newcomer, but the thing did not halt in its steps. It moved with purpose until it arrived before an active plasma pit. Liege cackled as the thing held the Matrix over the edge, its voice ringing out in a strange strangled mixture of hisses and chittering.
"We will not adhere to you. Whatever you are, you are not our chosen."
"No, but I am all that remains."
"Leave us. You are not worthy."
"I carry his CNA, his memory, and his goals."
"We do not know you or what you are. You are a face stealer, a creature that haunts the dreams of newsparks."
"I am a failsafe, a being designed to ensure that something of this world endures in the event that my foolish sister race fail to secure their continued existence."
"You are not one of us. We give you nothing. Return us to our resting place so that someone who is worthy may claim us."
"I am afraid I cannot allow that. I need the security that this relic provides. I need the wisdom of the ages in order to ensure that my kind flourish."
"A being such as yourself does not deserve to continue functioning, much less spread."
"Perhaps. But if you will not grant me the wisdom you hold, then none shall possess it."
"You cannot do this. The wisdom we carry is meant only for the Primes."
"Then make me something greater, make me a Prime."
His siblings bickered, but ultimately they conceded. The creature smiled, fangs and mandibles on full display as it parted its chassis to reveal a fully formed spark hidden within a chamber made of calipers more akin to claws. The Matrix was placed within, and the Primes did only the bare minimum to adjust the being they were now bound to. For the first time, Liege put all of his effort into the new Prime. His siblings offered no gifts aside from the usual enhanced strength. But Liege? Oh he did far more than them. With his siblings refusing to augment the new Prime more than absolutely necessary, Liege stepped in.
Looking over the new Prime's biology, Liege wanted to laugh until he passed out. Such a convoluted being. It was a miracle the creature had lasted so long. Plant, Insecticon, base Cybertronian, and even a small portion of Mech-animal CNA were mixed together in an unholy union. The fact that the creature lasted past its conception was surprising in the extreme. It was a wonderful concept, a creature capable of reproducing on its own to eliminate the need for the Well. It's biology allowed it and all its kind to work with the Insecticon colony instinct, getting rid of the pesky emotional distress that the children of Primus felt when put into a role. And most notably, its biology dictated that it's young could be changed, their very CNA adjusted to blend in, to act and seem just like any other Cybertronian... up until it was time for them to wake. It was a brilliant creature, one that simply had a few flaws.
Liege smoothed its coding, easing everything into a far less volatile state so that it would not forever be at odds with itself when around the children of Primus. He adjusted the creature's transformation cog so that it could both have a vehicular alternate mode and shed its disguise without pain. He carefully rearranged how its internals were structured, adjusting its organs to match the children of Primus in appearance so that scanners would not give it away. He went to great lengths to dutifully alter the creature's appearance, granting it something more regal to cover for its natural traits. Then, just as his siblings noticed his intervention, he adjusted one final thing in the creature. It's field was a dead giveaway, so he simply... quieted it. A keen set of optics would still pick the creature out, but the average mech would feel nothing.
When Prima stepped in, halting his changes, Liege simply laughed. The creature had been changed, and now it was guaranteed to last. This being could make Liege a body, and more than that, it was a being made of logic. It would listen to him.
"We will offer our wisdom, but do not heed the voice of Liege Maximo. He will lead you astray-"
"I will adhere to whomever I wish to offer my audial. You will not sway me."
The creature had sensed Liege's changes, it saw him favorably. The other Primes shrank back, most giving up immediacy as the thing's optics became their own. It began its journey toward the surface, toward the Autobots. All the Primes did was plot and pray the creature ended up being killed. Liege however pushed forward, brushing past his siblings to complete the rite.
"We have never had a Prime such as yourself. You need a designation worthy of your station."
"What name would you give me silver speaker?"
"You are the first of your kind, and I believe that given time, you shall usher in a new age for this world."
"Complete your statement. There is little time to waste."
"I would grant you the name Optimus Prime. First of your kind and last of the old line of Primes."
"That is acceptable."
His siblings threatened him, but there was nothing they could do to stop him as Liege kept himself in the forefront of the Matrix. The new Prime did not trust them, and rightly so. The only one who he gave his attention to was Liege, and so Liege did everything in his power to build on the silver of trust given to him. The new Prime was naive in the ways of the world, so Liege directed him. He taught the creature how to speak, how to act, and how to manipulate. He sensed Optimus's will and goals, and he did all he could to assist. He supplied specific memories, cultivating all the knowledge the young Prime consumed. And with every passing cycle, he grew more cunning, more logical-
More like Liege Maximo.
Things were progressing well, but the Prime needed allies he could trust with his nature, and as soon as the Insecticons found him, Optimus had their allegiance. It had been a complete accident, but shortly after Optimus integrated with the Autobots, the nearest Insecticons tracked him down and bowed before him. Liege's augments made Optimus appealing, especially with the Prime's ability to spawn. The Insecticons sensed this, and their coding demanded they follow their "Queen".
The Prime, having cultivated his cunning under Liege's guidance, wanted to do the strategically correct thing and deploy the Insecticons to do his bidding. But Liege stepped in before he could. This was too good and opportunity, and with it, Liege had the chance to make a deal.
"Don't send them out Optimus. Your Autobots are already dubious about you. If you do this, they will find out what you are and refuse to follow you."
"I can conjure a tale. I am a Prime."
"That is true, but you must understand how important reputation is. It would be wiser to use your new subjects to bolster your foundation, to build on what you have."
"What are you suggesting?"
"You cannot spawn because it is not safe for your young yet. But you are also the only one. If you die, your species will have failed."
"Get to the point."
"Use the Insecticons to create a safe haven, a storehouse for your spawn until it is safe for them to grow. The Insecticons will guard them, and in the event all else fails, you can wait until the children of Primus have thinned their ranks and do whatever you wish with your forces."
"That is a logical suggestion."
"Not only that, but should you be killed, some of your young will remain. And in doing so, you also ensure the survival of some of your sister race through the Insecticons."
"I understand. I will follow this advice."
"Good... and to ensure their security, I have a few measures that could be used to guard your brood while you are absent."
"You offer this knowledge too freely. What is it you want?"
"You have learned well. I want a body Optimus. I have been locked in here since the first age, and with your ability to spawn, all you would need to do it connect the Matrix toward your reproductive systems. Then I can move my spark into one of your larva."
"It would mean death for the larva in question."
"A small price to pay for my teachings."
"How do I know you will not turn on me upon receiving a frame?"
"Why would I? You may rule over your kind as you see fit. They would not adhere to me anyway. But in return, I wish to govern the children of Primus."
"You will not harm me or my kin."
"Of course."
"Then the deal is done. Offer me your knowledge to guard my brood, and we shall discuss when you are to receive your frame."
The deal was complete, and Liege could only smile as he sat back and guided the young Prime in his work. Finally, a Prime he could use, a Prime that agreed with him. No matter what happened to Optimus, the creature would keep his oath. In the end, the new species would survive and Liege would get his frame. His siblings begged him to use his trust with the Prime to lead him to death, but Liege refused. They screamed as the named Pretender spawned, and Liege chuckled.
Let them spread, let the Pretenders grow. They would be valuable allies once Liege was set free. They were logical, and so long as Liege had useful skill or wisdom to offer, they would aid him. Optimus had proven as such. The Pretenders were the bane of the Decepticons and Liege Maximo's salvation. He would need to thank the one called Shockwave when all was said and done. The Pretenders were truly extraordinary.

OH, I am so interested in your idea for SG Tarnma.
Okay so my exact ideas for SG Tarnma vary a lot, because I think there's two different canon varieties of Shattered Glass: the original Fun Publications SG where everything was completely flipped and turned into crack-canon, and then what IDW later did with Shattered Glass IDW1 where it was more or less just role reversal IDW1 with only some "complete flipping" of lore and personality. There's also my own personal Shattered Glass universe that I built for Pay Unto Evil, so I could also answer this question as "what would Tarnma be in the SG PUE universe."
That being said I'll do my best to explain all of the different ideas I've had for SG Tarnma. All of them are pretty different so I'm not really particularly attached to any one, but here goes
Version 1: FunPub complete role reversal style. Pharma was originally a mere energon farmer get it lol and has a very meek, shy, unconfident personality. He got enlisted by the Autobots, but he spoke too quietly when they asked for his name (Farmer), so they started calling him Pharma. Then at some point Ratchet is like "yo I'm gonna make this completely untrained guy do medical operations. No I'm not gonna send him to medical school he can learn on the job!" And so Pharma becomes Ratchet's apprentice and develops even more anxiety from the hundreds of times he murders patients either on accident bc he literally has no medical training, or on purpose bc Ratchet made him. He's literally just trying his best and doesn't even want to be here. Meanwhile, the SG DJD is known as the Decepticon Jokester Division, formed as a sort of circus troupe meant to bring good cheer to the Decepticons in a time of depressing war. The members of the DJD are codenamed after the first cities they toured right before/when the war started. How reluctant medic Pharma and literal clown Tarn meet in this universe is anyone's guess.
Version 2: IDW style. Tarn and Pharma still have basically the same backstories as canon IDW1 except that Pharma is a professional assassin instead of a doctor (yknow, role reversal where Pharma is an expert at killing people instead of healing them). Also this universe's Pharma has the posh and aristocratic personality fandom thinks he has in canon lol. Maybe Pharma finds out about Tarn having a secret t-cog addiction, and he starts bringing t-cogs to Tarn in exchange for Tarn providing him intel (or some other service, idk). Maybe in this universe instead of Tarn torturing Pharma into insanity, Pharma somehow develops guilt for killing people because of Tarn, then defects from the Autobots willingly? Or they kick him out like in canon
Version 3: Pay Unto Evil SG. Tarn and Pharma would have their FunPub style backgrounds (though maybe Tarn's would be slightly more serious) with the added caveat of Pharma having the evil Matrix's mind control embedded in his brain. He still didn't join the Autobots willingly and wasn't even trained to be a doctor. Somehow he and Tarn meet and fall in love across faction lines because Tarn sees how much Pharma is suffering under mind slavery and feeling like he doesn't belong among his cruel comrades. It's a bit of a tragic one though, as Pharma warns Tarn that the Prime can look through his mind at any time thanks to the Matrix. If he finds out that Pharma is Tarn's vulnerability, he could use that against him somehow, or worse, mind control Pharma into trying to kill Tarn himself. They were both devastated when the universe swap happened and they thought they would never see each other again. Though Pharma secretly felt some relief that Tarn was now a universe away and can find someone else to love who isn't a mind-controlled walking time bomb that could try to murder him at any moment.

Okay lore update;
the comics showcase Jake and Neytiri holding a giant meeting with the clan after they see the sky people ships, they debrief. He moves everyone to the mountains to keep them safe. Long story short he tries to convince the rest of the humans to fight back against the rda and him and Neytiri basically go fight in space. They get chased by the rda. THENNN we see the forest burn. Very much rushed imo because everyone I know was under the impression it was the same night and it was confusing.
First like 10 minutes of the film was too rushed and I think this is me kinda putting the pieces together. Comics wise I guess we would’ve known better if we read them?

I love it when comics try to simplify lore and fail hilariously. "Superman wasn't Superboy as a kid and therefore couldn't have been involved in the Legion of Superheroes. The Legion Superboy was ACTUALLY Superboy from a pocket dimension that was created by the time trapper, unbeknownst to the legion."

does ravenstan have his tooth gap filled?!? he better not but i feel like kyle woulda totally noticed by now! ahhh and whats up with chapter 6 D: it was an absolute masterpiece to me!
unfortunately...that's affirmative, darling. :(
when you are a big hotshot celebrity boy and everyone is looking at you, you cannot afford ( ironically ) to have fucked up teeth, so he did have his tooth filled in. or rather, management had his tooth filled in.
& technically, he also is *Supposed* to wear an invisalign at night, but ravenstan forgets the lyrics to his own songs ( granted the recent ones C.D. has released haven't been written by him at all :/ -- that's why they're all shallow, vapid and gimmicky ) so idk how they expect him to remember to put that hunk of Plastic in his mouth like...like the closest thing that man has to mouthwash is a shot of jack smh.
i wrote...way too much in this ask meme. this was a wild ride, i'm sorry for being unhinged. i spiraled halfway through this, lmao. <3
edit: i forgot to bring up chapter six. i will bring it back, mayhaps. i had a Stannic Attack after posting it, also, felt weird about it. but i am glad you liked it. i also...liked it? but it was stressing me out, so just hang in there and i'll try to give you a more in depth answer later xx.
but riiiiip stan's beautiful chipped tooth!!!!! :((( a testament to his love for kyle broflovski via pint-sized homoerotic hockey puck heroism at stark's pond </333 i bet you when raven was getting his tooth fixed, somewhere in nyc, jersey kyle felt a sudden, sharp sting of pain and sorrow he couldn't place. the second he finds out u better believe my man will be screaming, crying, punching the air, trying to fight every dentist in the world. THAT WAS HIS TOOTH. HIS STANS TOOTH!!! :(
management....count your fucking days.
( i kind of want to tell you guys what the record labels name is, but it might say too much but also...;)))) i'll take a compliment bribe >.> )
also because it was RavenStan...it was probably pretty much the best orthodontist they could find and it looks really good. tbh i don't think you would be able to tell that his tooth was fucked up at all...sigh. :/
really, the only evidence of stan's tooth being fucked up is from photo albums ( a lot of them got burnt up ), the polaroids that kyle has, the pictures of him in the sp yearbooks ( which were the ones ran in the papers and one online article when news broke that he died...with his fucking dead name printed under them...choke and die, south park )
speaking of school pictures, fun fact! or actually not that fun...sixth grade was stan's last year of school. physically, at least. he had to do school from home/online because for obvious reasons, stan could not risk going to actual irl school after he disappeared. he was told it was 'way too risky and dangerous, bird' ( the person taking care of him called him that as a nickname c: )...stan did literally Beg tho :(
which is actually really sad bc stan complained abt actual school sm when he was actually allowed to go when he was 'alive' and then was forced to watch every other kid be able to do actual hs stuff while he sat at home, safe, robbed of having a normal adolescence. im so </3
i fucking love act two of the rm!prequel. i want to talk about it more, but it features a lot of stuff we don't know abt it yet/important chars.
not like that's gonna stop me, lmaoooo!!! again! i'll take a bribe! ;))))
anyways!!! back to school and stuff, kenny was constantly like dude i wish i could stay home!!! school sux! and stan was like at least u can GO to school, ken! u just choose not to!!! >:c ( like stan...stfu, do not pretend like u wouldn't be asleep or ditching ) kenny DID sneak him out a lot to go to high school parties and he got into a looooot of trouble for doing that oh my god smh. worth it...my boys, my boys.
not a lot of pictures of him from act two either, i'm afraid. definitely nothing digital. there are physical pictures, home videos, things like that. he wasn't really allowed to have any social media At All 4 safety.
but uh....if you want to hear something really fruity and pathetic...stan was specifically not supposed to use the internet to snoop on kyle. like he was Specifically Banned and Strictly Forbidden from looking up shit about kyle broflovski which...BOOOOO!!! COME ON!!!!!
...that did not stop him tho. he made a looooot of burner accounts to snoop. but like...no such luck, really. kyle had like no social media. he had an instagram, i think. but it was private and had...1 picture on it.
do u know how actualy Nutso Fucking Batshit Insane it made stan to not know what that ONE picture looked like? do you know how many times, he downloaded/redownloaded insta, how many fake accounts he tried to make to try and trick kyle into following him? smh gaywad.
so, dw team! while kyle was in/out of psych wards bc he was seeing stan everywhere, stan was perpetually grounded for being gay aka google searching kyle and looking pretty much everywhere for him.
but speaking of the internet, the cd boys did run a joint meme account while they were living together. no pictures of them just...low quality meme content. BUT SPEAKING!!!!! of low quality. THE ONLY DAMNING EVIDENCE OF TOOTH!STAN!!!! is a super old battle of the bands video that was taken of them at some piece of shit event like 3...4 years ago? the camera quality is really bad and shaky, the sound quality is even worse. also that video has like 57 views TOPS but it was before they got scouted and stans tooth is fucked up in it. ;)
not that u can see it, lmao. or know how to find it because they were not crimson dawn until they got signed. in LA they cycled between a lot of really bad, cringey band names so it would be really difficult to locate that video or pause it in the right place to like barely make out stans tooth bc the light was catching on it sm/it was out of focus.
BUT IDK!!! IF ANYONE IS CRAZY AND UNHINGED ENOUGH TO FIND THAT VIDEO, ITS KYLE BROFLOVSKI, BABEY! GO KYLE GO!
tldr: stan's tooth did get filled in and now our hearts are empty. but it Would be too easy to identify him; kyle would know that tiny fucked up tooth anywhere. tbh the tiny stan right eye beauty mark is also v damning, but stans hair is always in his eyes/his eyeliner is always so badly smudged that you can't see it all the time ( kyle also purposely tries Not to look at raven bc hes dummy Hot and doesnt want to admit it lmao like hes subconciously aware that he would simp lmao )
YOU ALSO REALLY CANT BE LIKE THAT CELEBRITY MAN ALSO HAS A BEAUTY MARK BY HIS EYE, THATS MY DEAD SBF!!!! i would not put it past kyle to try that, but i think regardless he would have gaslight himself into thinking that ravens stan beauty mark was an ugly mark and that he was having clozapine hallucinations again because stan....is....dead and is clearly not raven of c.d. clear...ly. <3
the way that kyles 'psychosis' is just him having really good intuition.
the world owes kyle broflovski an apology, istg. i see you, baby!!!!!

What the Oracle's priestess means by "potentials" has always been an interesting question. "Potential Ones" doesn't particularly make sense - there's reason to think that Neo was engineered from fetus-hood to be the One; and even if he wasn't and the selection was more random, the One probably wouldn't be a small child 6 months before the scheduled destruction of Zion. "Potential redpills" (the thing Path of Neo seemingly retcons it to) also doesn't make sense, in the context of "you [an already-redpilled Neo] can wait with the other potentials."
My latest theory: what if "potential" is a machine term for a program or synthient who hasn't fully "evolved" from a regular machine into a conscious one yet? Modals are apparently used to "evolve a program" to fill a particular purpose by putting them through a looping simulation. What if the Oracle has appropriated that term and applied it to humans who haven't "awakened to their purpose" yet - whatever (she thinks) that purpose might be?

The Matrix’s Secret
Note: I love the idea of Optimus dealing with some sort of Eldritch entity, so, here’s my take on it! I hope it isn’t too bad, I haven’t written for Transformers in years. Anyways, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy it!
.   .   .
The voices were the least concerning part of being a Prime. The Matrix housed an unfathomable amount of memories, thoughts, and opinions—it was home to all the experience of Optimus’s predecessors. Hearing the occasional whisper or shout was nothing too concerning when you considered that within the Matrix rested a thousand lifetimes folded over one another. A million different contradictions and ideas intertwined into one unstable fabric, one of which Optimus tended to swaddle himself in whether he desired it or not. After bearing the voices for so long, they became a sort of background noise, a song he learned to tune out. But as Primus has Unicron, the Matrix is not all order and peace. Optimus, no matter how hard he tried, could never get over the feeling of the Matrix.
When he was first bonded with the Matrix he swore he could feel something slithering through his fuel lines, tiny pricks of silent pain that slowly welded themselves to him. A parasite that clung to every inch of metal and alloy. He ignored it at first—greater pains racking his body like nothing he had ever felt before. His cables were sore, roaring with the stress of keeping his new frame together. He figured it was his body’s way of adapting to his situation. He had no way to know what was normal or not. It’s not often that a prime is forged after all.
The feeling got unbearable as the war went on. Even as his frame adjusted and settled, his spark becoming used to bearing the weight of a leader, he could still feel something in him. He swore it was there. Sliding under the surface of his arms, coming to rest behind his optics—as if it was watching his every move. It never did anything malicious or sentient, but it was unnerving none-the-less. Eventually he came to the conclusion that this was simply what a Prime felt like. That this was Primus’s design. Why? He did not know, but what use would it be to ponder over such a thing during a war so brutal it ripped through the body of God like nothing? He shoved his own discomfort aside and let the unsettling thing in him do as it pleased.
One instance finally pushed him over the edge though, sending him running to the med-bay. He hadn’t been in battle thankfully, but patrolling an isolated street for Decepticon activities. He had felt horrible that morning, waking up from stasis feeling like he was a guest within his own frame. Everything felt clunky and awkward. His hands too rough and stiff to maneuver in the way he wanted them too. After managing to avoid everyone’s concerns, he left under the excuse that he better check the outskirts of the city, where it was rumored that Megatron had been spotted. He found nothing but the forced realization of his own problems. Once he had felt remotely like himself again—whoever that may be, Orion or Optimus, he didn’t know—he decided to head back to base. They needed him more than the abandoned buildings did. But he found himself standing still.
No amount of horror or terror will ever come close to what he felt in that moment. The rush of battle and the fear of death is one thing—but this? This was something else. Suspense driven into his very spark, dentas seemingly curling into the roof of his mouth, urging him to run. The voices of his predecessors, normally only a lonesome hum of a forgotten past, joined into a crescendo of yelling—every single one telling him to fight. But fight what? There was nothing there but himself and the ruins of a once wide-spread society. His optics snapped in every direction, torso twisting in so many different positions he could’ve sworn that he snapped a cable. Nothing was around him. Nothing but himself, broken buildings, and the Matrix.
He wished he could describe what he heard then, what kept his legs and pedes chained to the ground, but there is simply no language for it. It’s not a physical entity, no, but it doesn’t only exist in the mind either—yet somehow it almost seemed like the moment you truly captured what it was, the very definition of existence slipped between your fingers like sand; the coarse grains rubbing against reality like a knife to flesh, a weapon so strange that not one being could’ve thought of it. And Gods, the sound. Looking back Optimus still can’t find any other words to encompass the horrifying tune but emptiness. It was a sound without sound, a song with no music or lyrics, a tale that started nowhere and ended everywhere. It didn’t make sense, it couldn’t make sense, yet somehow everything clicked into place and Optimus heard it all. He heard the thrum of space and time as it collapsed and pulled the stitches of its birthed wounds to accommodate the creature within him. Reality bled for his spark and mind.
The Matrix—no, something hiding within the Matrix, drowned out every last Prime and came to rest just below Optimus’s audials. It sang its song, told its story, and laughed with the echo of dying worlds. It curled around him like smoke, yet heavy enough that he could feel his shoulders compressing with pressure. The thing in him, the slithering being in his fuel lines and cables, stretched outwards desperately—trying to free itself of him. Fingers so thin and fragile they broke every time they cried out for freedom and peace; shattering glass churning in Optimus’s fuel lines, beating against him in the rhythm of his spark.
It was then he realized why the Primes within the Matrix talked so much, mourned when a new one came to take their place—they lived with this wretched thing and they would never be able to escape it; their memories and thoughts, the very definition of them, not resting with the Allspark but with this substance that constricted all existence and laws of science.
Ratchet had nearly dropped dead when the Optimus had stumbled into his office ranting about some kind of creature within him. He spoke in a tongue not known to him and talked as if he had lost his mind—as if his processor had been split into thirds and tossed to the stars. With several minutes of scrambled panic and immense concern, Ratchet managed to get the medical tools in working order. The scans had shown that everything was normal. Processor working the same as it had the day before, fuel lines clear and clean, spark so bright that it reminded Ratchet of the story of Primus’s glory. For all intents and purposes, Optimus seemed to be operating perfectly. He suggested lots of rest and asked some fellow Autobots to look over the frantic Prime.
“It’ll be fine soon,” he said.
Optimus didn’t ask for any help regarding the Matrix after that. His soldiers worried and his friends were distracted thinking about his health—not to mention the war would not be lost because of his inability to handle his own problems. So, he locked his fears away and acted as he ought too. Strong, wise, and steady-fast—that’s who he is. Who he has to be—no matter the personal cost. This was the path he had chosen, the life that Primus had intended for him, so who is he to complain?
The thing never spoke to him again—at least, not outright. It seemed to have given up after that first try, only becoming more restless within him. Sometimes trying to control his body to act out its rage or sorrows, but Optimus had learned to stop such things. It took his whole spark and mind to prevent his frame from succumbing to the writhing creature that lived inside him, but the exhaustion would be worth it if he could keep everyone safe—keep everyone ignorant to what the Matrix had imprisoned. It wasn’t easy, Gods no. And sometimes on the battlefield he would entertain the thought of maybe moving a second too slow, rushing into battle a little too fast, maybe even taunting his enemies more than he should; but the Matrix—the Primes, stopped him every time and set him back on his rightful path.
Though, he had his doubts about if it was the “right” path, the “peaceful” path, the road that will lead to Primus’s will. He couldn't help but think about what he was doing, the God he worshiped and trusted for millennia. For if Primus made such a demon inhabit his child's body, is he really that divine at all? A God worth devoting millions of lives too? Optimus will never know the answer, for it rests not in life or death, but in some godly plane of existence that he will never be able to fully comprehend.

The matrix might be an asshole, but it isn't evil. It has a goal here beyond "Kill Megatron and return to golden age" and it's following some spiritually programmed something or other.
It will have to accept that Megatron isn't dying anytime soon lol

now that i'm thinking about when fate comes knocking again i have to talk about how fucking funny the matrix reference doors from chapter 1 became post-twosday. the guy behind the green door was the only character in the entire series that wasn't played by sky and he just showed up for five seconds and foreshadowed her transition. if i was charlie i'd wake up laughing every morning

"Rodimus is a better Prime because it didn't hurt for him to bond with the Matrix while for Optimus it did" headcanon/theory my beloathed.
One day I'm literally gonna snap and make a whole post addressing why what's wrong bc I'm tired of the inaccuracy and tired of ppl not understanding the Point TM of IDW and its version of the Matrix/Primacy and even more tired of people putting down Optimus in favor of Rodimus by essentially arguing that being unworthy means you deserve to be punished/put in pain bc you just weren't good enough to hold the Symbol of Ultimate Authority
#it's wrong on so many levels both in terms of lore and as well as like what the general themes of idw1 are#it's just a validation contest using the matrix as some magical symbol to decide who's the most special#which is ironically something that was a plot point in exrid/OP. specifically how stupid of an idea that is ldskjflksd#ppl revealing that they havent read anything besides mtmte/ll as usual#like half the reason ppl think optimus is a bad prime and rodimus is a good prime is literally bc like#optimus was written by an author who was specifically trying to deconstruct him (sometimes to the point of absurdity)#and rodimus was written by an author who takes a more optimistic/idealistic approach. and is also better at writing#but also like am i seriously the only person who thinks that that argument is fucked up?????#like 'OP felt pain which means he's unworthy/not a real prime/not a true leader'#ok so you think that there's a hierarchy of moral goodness in which anyone who falls short of that Moral Ideal should suffer#as a sign of their unworthiness?? like does that not sound dystopian as hell to any of you?? why would you WANT the matrix to work like tha#even if the theory were true (which it isn't) why would you view the matrix as a good authoritative moral judge of character#if its idea of 'moral judgement' is to inflict pain on anyone who's supposedly not truly good/worthy#wasn't the entire point of the ending of LL (including rodimus being a good leader) that everyone is worth it?#like rodimus literally said 'you ARE damn well good enough' or something like that#so what? everyone else in the universe tries their best and that's enough but somehow when OP suffers it's like#a sign that he's not actually a good prime/leader?? we're really going with the punitive perspective purely for One Guy??#swear to god ppl are projecting their authority issues onto Optimus the way they shit on him for things they would excuse#if any other character did it#Optimus is uniquely deserving of pain/being marked as unworthy bc idk he was a cop once and that offends my delicate sensibilities#what's even funnier is how much harm was inflicted by rodimus as a captain sheerly due to his stupidity or ego but everyone forgives him#i guess bc as long as the matrix likes him that means he's valid no matter what he actually does as a person#WHICH IS SOMETHING IDW ITSELF ARGUED AGAINST BC A LOT OF THE PRIMES THAT WERE CHOSEN BY THE MATRIX#WERE DICKS AND THE FACT THEY COULD WIELD THE MATRIX DIDN'T MAKE THEM GOOD PEOPLE#like oh my god stop using the matrix as an arbiter of moral authority in idw1 it literally goes against the themes of the story#including the themes that are embodied in rodimus himself#idw op love

How Cybertronian Sparks are Created via Matrix - MTMTE, Issue 19
now, I had a whole other post I was gonna write here
but my partner just leaned over my shoulder, read these panels, and asked:
“wait, the Matrix is a “Primal Conduit” which holds the ability to create life, or like, unborn sparks? and Rodimus carries half of a Matrix or something, right?”
to which I said, very carefully, “yes...”.
and my partner followed up with an extremely powerful question:
“so, if the Matrix carries sparks, does that mean anyone who carries a Matrix-- like, a whole one? or would a part of one be enough?--would that mean Matrix carriers are pregnant by default?”
now, listen
I can’t recall anything canonical at the moment that would explicitly confirm otherwise, certainly not by the time (in universe) in which the discussion in the above panels occurs
so it is POSSIBLE.
canonically, that’s a POSSIBILITY.
whether Cybertronians would view this in the same way is another question entirely.
if you think about it on a technical level, since a legitimate Matrix holds within it the potential for the generation of sparks, then yes, technically a Matrix holder by human definition would be “pregnant”, as they would be carrying (literally, holding inside their body) sparks which have not yet sprung forth from the Matrix core (not yet “born”) but are known to exist within the Matrix itself.
whether the sparks generated by the Matrix are held within the energy core of the Matrix perpetually/always and come forth as needed in specific circumstances, or if the sparks are produced and ejected only under certain influences or under certain conditions, is not 100% clear. it could be both, or either;
we see that the Matrix does produce sparks when manipulated manually to do so, but we don’t know for sure if these sparks were actually generated at that time, or if they may have existed in a sort of subspace within the core of the Matrix beforehand and were only brought forth once manipulation drew them out.
but “pregnancy” is just how humans might view it. nothing in IDW 1 canon suggests Cybertronians view it the same way, as overwhelmingly the emphasis on “new life” as a concept is placed primarily on hot spots and the generation of new sparks from their concentrated wells of energy (more in line with the classic Well of All Sparks approach)
in MTMTE, Rodimus is carrying half of an ”empty” Matrix by this point in the story (Rodimus describes it himself as being empty in an earlier issue, there’s also other stuff going on with the Matrix in IDW1 which I will get into eventually in another post I want to make about Matrix stuff once I get the time for that)
HOWEVER, this is a series written by JRO, a man who sure did write some things about a lot of stuff!
also, if your brain, like mine, has been poisoned by fanfiction, then you are almost certainly aware of the shit our poisoned brains might be able to generate with this concept in mind whenever we get dialogue regarding “carrying” the Matrix, as shown in the panel below from Lost Light Issue 5:
Tumblr media
it sure isn’t, Rodimus!!!
there is also periodically alternating terminology in universe regarding the Matrix;
sometimes a bot in possession of a Matrix is described as “holding” the Matrix, sometimes this is called “wielding” the Matrix, then in other contexts it is described as “carrying” the Matrix, like in the panel above.
“holding” suggests ownership (obviously, no shit, I know lol)
“wielding” potentially suggests an innate defensive/offensive power, for example, as in “wielding a sword” (interesting because Rodimus explicitly states above that the Matrix is not a weapon, so this term may instead be an implication of the social/political/spiritual power brought to any who obtain the Matrix, which would make sense)
“carrying” suggests maybe some other things that might possibly be relevant to this discussion (fanfiction has destroyed my brain but also this series is written by JRO, so I consider this to be at least plausible in the context of MTME/Lost Light)
further research and analysis is needed to determine if there may be any potential specific reasoning for which terms are used and in what contexts a certain term may be preferred over another...I’m gonna end up making a Matrix plot timeline/lore map or some shit lmao
anyway!!!
the fact that my partner is now googling “Transformers pregnant is this possible?” on their phone while sitting right next to me while I am writing this is making me lose my fucking mind
this is so funny to me, I need to explain SO MUCH to them over the next like several hours, this is going to take forever
my partner now firmly believes the Matrix is a literal baby making machine and it is very hard for me to explain or contextualise any of the surrounding info about the Matrix as it appears in MTMTE because they are mostly only familiar with TFP and G1
and this situation has completely derailed my original train of thought and I no longer remember why I spent so long digging up this issue so I could take these screenshots in the first place lol
but I thought I would share anyway because I can’t believe this is how my partner is finding out about the concept of Transformers sparklings
on the upside I now get to do an IRL long post LOL so honestly this works for me, lmaoooooo
(if I remember what the hell I was originally going to talk about, I’ll make another post about it later LOL)
