On the world of Spherus Magna, many millennia have come and gone since the time known as BIONICLE. And in that time, the scholars of Spherus Magna have not been idle...

Under the auspices of the Annoxtus Academy of Science, a team of researchers, including linguists, historians, archaeologists, and agoripologists, has worked tirelessly to record, preserve, and analyze the ancient languages and linguistic varieties of the Mata System.

The Institute for Matoran Studies is proud to present the newest result of those labors: The full and complete Volume I of An Etymological Dictionary of Matoric, Third Edition, now covering the letters A through G, along with “Supplemental Entries” for H-Z.

An Etymological Dictionary of Matoric, Third Edition - Volume I: A-G [with Supplemental Entries H-Z] (PDF)

The previously published version of Volume I covered the letters A and B only, amounting to about 90 entries, with 36 root-word entries. In contrast, the Complete Volume I is substantially expanded, containing about 274 entries for the letters A-G, along with an additional ~407 Supplemental Entries, and ~169 root-word entries.

The Supplemental Entries contain words that are referenced in the etymologies of the primary entries for A-G, allowing the reader to cross-reference almost any word referenced in the dictionary. The Supplemental Entries also contain many words not referenced in the primary entries, but whose etymologies have been finalized by the IMS research group, providing a snapshot of the development of future dictionary volumes. This includes nearly all words and grammatical markers listed or referenced in other educational materials, making the Complete Volume I the most comprehensive reference document for the lexicon of the Matoran Language.

The Matoran Language (Matoric) is a constructed language (“conlang”) set within the universe and lore of BIONICLE (a LEGO property). It is the language of the biomechanical species called Matoran, and it is also used as a lingua franca amongst many of the biomechanical inhabitants of the artificially-constructed Matoran Universe.

The matoran language is capable, why not use it?

"We aren't companions anymore. We're a lakai!"

A spiritual Kaita, more an act on emotion, something matoran we're originally programmed to do, but were evolved to act on. Huki and Maku, Matau and Nokama, make it a collective headcanon. These couples deserve to be together.

Apologies for tagging you like this, but I wanted to ask a hypothetical that wouldn’t fit in the ask box. Say I’m creating a setting (Or really, a variation of an existing setting) in which there are multiple Matoran villages of the same element. I was thinking that instead of naming one Ta-Koro and then coming up with some random word for the others, it would make more sense to delineate them by their location. So you have “Ta-Koro in the volcano”, “Ta-Koro in the valley,” and “Ta-Koro by the lava river” for example.

Pursuing your dictionary, I wasn’t able to consistently find good words to uniquely describe some of the specific sorts of environments I was looking for. Some can be covered by using the name of the area, (”Ta-Koro in the volcano” becoming “Ta-Koro in the Mangaia” for example) but that unfortunately isn’t something that can be done with all of them. What do you think the Matoran etymology for ideas like valley, cliff, swamp, glacier, etc. would look like?

In addition, I wanted to ask about how I would translate the “in the” part of these names. The best one I could find was “kiro,” the word for something being within a boundary, but I figured I should ask you if that’s a valid usage, or if there’s a better option. (Ta-Koro Kiro Mangaia is a bit of a mouthful if nothing else.)

Ibriki - The Lost

Species: Matoran

Element: Stone

Gender: Male

Kanohi: Powerless Kulsai

Weapon/s: Ibriki wields a scavenged scrap spear and a partially damaged/crudely repaired ghost blaster.

He has a high level of skill at building machines and tools/weapons, while nowhere near that of such as a Nynrah Ghost or Vortixx, he is still much better than that of the average Matoran.

Personality: Ibriki is quite gruff for a Matoran, a loner by nature, or just one who doesn't enjoy socialization with most individuals. In truth he cared little for the other Matoran of Mahri-Nui. While he understood the benefits of having them alive, he remained on quite an impersonal stance to many of them, just playing his part to attempt to ensure his chances of survival would be as high as he could make them.

He's quite decisive, rarely acting without some form of thought and planning. One who observes and try's to figure out which path to take for the best outcome.

Along with this he’s quite a bit of a work-a-holic, one who can get invested into a project to such a depth that they may forget to take care of themselves. Background: Ibriki was originally from Mahri-Nui, but he didn't stay there long. While he did remain for a good number of years past the Cataclysm he was removed from their ‘island’ in a fairly quick manner. Being swept off the island after nearly being killed during a Barraki attack. While he had expected to die he was surprised to find himself alive and well once he awoke, resting in an underwater cave and surrounded by a large, obviously artificial air bubble. It was an even bigger surprise when he found out who it was that saved him. While at first believing his savoir to be a Barraki captor (which was at least fairly close on the captor part). He quickly learned that she was actually a Toa, another mutated denizen of the now destroyed prison of course, but still safer than that of a Barraki. Especially when considering the damage to her original limbs and once he began to learn some of her past and witnessed her quite obsessive protectiveness of him, eventually leading to what was basically a permanent stay in her cavern. While he wasn't exactly that disturbed by the development, Rakya, his ‘Toa savior', being more than willing to ensure he remained healthy, alive, and generally happy, ensuring his air bubble remained full and even going out of her way to gather materials from the remnants of the pit for him to work and build with, he was still highly wary of her and her story and thus planned out possible ways to escape, even going so far as to build a breathing device for her, using the distraction to also build his current scrap spear to kill her with if he chose to. He chose to continue trusting her, seeing her as the better choice for survival. He remained with her for numerous years before Mahri-Nui’s rejoining. During that time Ibriki had been attempting to create a working breathing apparatus for Rakya, the amount of effort needed was luckily lessened once it was discovered Rakya was partially amphibious from her mutations, and even managed to build the replacements/repairs for her limbs. 

Following the rejoining the two found themselves dragged into Karda-Nui from the sudden seismic shifting, Rakya’s ‘home’ having been built into a crevice of sorts between the fallen island and its pillar.

Ibriki was lucky to avoid being mutated by the swamps of Karda-Nui, while Rakya’s own mutations were far enough progressed to render her immune. 

Upon their arrival the two quickly took to learning as much of their new location, and the dangers it carried as they could. Ibriki even managed to get his hands on a damaged ghost blaster they found while travelling, even repairing it to fully working order later.

Currently he is more than 'happy' to live with Rakya, curious to learn more of her hidden story, such as her real name due to the suspicious fact that it literally translates to murder (gotta love the Matoran dictionary) and his realization of the usefulness of having what amounts to his own personal Toa, even despite her weakened attributes and... 'quirks'. He’s even having taken a bit of a liking to her, making her one of the few he didn't mind interacting with.

Rakya - The Ruined

Species: Toa, pit mutated Element: Lightning Gender: Female Kanohi: Powerless/mutated Matatu Weapon/s: Rakya wields a pair of twin blades, both recovered from the destruction of the Pit. Other than that she no longer has access to her Kanohi power, the mutations having rendered it powerless, but she does retain some access to her elemental power. While it is no longer at the strength it originally was she can easily channel it through both her weapons and body to a reasonably high level. Her natural resistance having remained intact enough to allow her the ability.

She can also manipulate the electricity that spreads from her own, such as when using it underwater, allowing her to manipulate the spreading electricity field to target, and avoid others. Abilities: Rakya has above average night vision, can breath underwater, has slightly higher than average strength due to her 'upgrades', and can cause her spine/back to glow at will. Unfortunately she's greatly debilitated by her infected eye, having damaged it in a fight against one of the Barraki, losing one of her mandibles/fangs, and leaving her with a permanently blurred and faded view on her left side. Personality: Rakya is... twitchy. While usually an unbelievably friendly individual, acting especially affectionate to Matoran, she can be set off certain conditions, such as seeing a Matoran be harmed or witnessing a Toa/similar protector not 'caring enough for their Matoran', suddenly switching to a crazed individual willing to slaughter whatever set her off while also attempting to keep Matoran 'safe' ,even to the level of possible danger to themselves. Otherwise she's a nice enough individual, friendly, if to a sometimes creepy level, inquisitive, slightly distractible, and a bit twitchy, usually shown by at times bursting into chittering giggles. Background: Rakya, originally known as Idris, was the single Toa protector of the village of a Makuta assigned island. Since her beginnings she has always carried a love for Matoran, coddling and interacting with them at every chance she could get, nearly treating them as beings more precious to herself than Mata-Nui himself. Which was why it was such a surprise when she appeared to have slaughtered her entire island. While the full story is unknown to all but Idris, who later renamed herself Rakya after her sentencing to the pit, it has since been assumed, after the Makuta's betrayal, that the original idea, her just snapping and slaughtering everything, was incorrect (the shakiness surrounding it since its consideration helping), most likely having instead involving all of the Matoran being killed in quick succession, most likely the Makuta, causing her to snap and kill it along with basically glassing the entire island, if the charred husk of armor she was attacking before being recovered was truly the yet to be found Makuta, and her rantings about her 'precious things' being killed meant anything. In truth her imprisonment to the Pit was less due to the assumption of her killing the Matoran than it was to both contain her, and keep it a secret from the Matoran that a Toa could do such, or at least be driven to such levels of insanity as her. During said imprisonment Rakya was involved in multiple escape attempts, both in escape of the prison and just containment to attempt attacks on individuals known for harming Matoran, leading to heavy and lasting damage across her form, mainly centered across her limbs, and increases on her security and quality of treatment. After the original Pit collapse Rakya, despite the sudden mutations, quickly took advantage of the situation to attack those she had been stopped from doing such to before, scavenging a twin pair of blades and hunting them down while she could, eventually leading to a brawl between one of the Barraki, which resulted in the of her left mandible/fang and lasting damage to her left eye, leading to the later, visible infection she currently suffers from. Afterwards she took to wandering the remnants, eventually learning of the fallen Mahri-Nui, while she would've attempted to enter she quickly learned of the poisonous atmosphere, and the Matoran's wariness of Barraki-esque beings just as fast. Instead she took to helping them as she could, attempting to thwart Barraki attacks, become prepared to recover fallen Matoran should such happen, and leave potentially helpful objects for them to find, keeping herself just an unknown helper all the while. This eventually lead to her encountering Ibriki after his fall, and her subsequent obsession with keeping him afterwards. And, to put it simply she was beyond overjoyed when he seemed to not mind her plan, and even offered to help repair her. This, when combined with his additional confirmation that he preferred staying with her and gift of an internal breathing upgrade, she is quite literally willing to do near-anything for him and to keep him safe, even going so far as to sacrifice her own life on the latter.

I have a headcanon that Papu and Rangi are a Matoric approximation of the names of the two leaders of the Great Beings. How would these names translate to Praetar?

The names "Papu" and "Rangi" are derived from the figures Papa and Rangi in Māori mythology, and because of this, I have intentionally chosen not to incorporate them into materials on Matoric or related conlanging for the same reason that I have not incorporated other words/terms, such as the Māori word tohunga, that were removed from use in BIONICLE materials after 2002.

See the "Language Acknowledgement" section at the start of the dictionary for a brief explanation of the appropriation that occurred and a fairly detailed accounting of the words involved, which originated not just from Te Reo Māori, but also from Fijian, Rotuman, Hawaiian, and other languages.

On the Matoran word “Jaga”

I just found out about linguists in Bionicle, (esp. outofgloom) and I am so excited, particularly as a linguistic/cultural-anthropologist. You folks are the bees knees. After trolling through the 2nd ed. dictionary and nerding the fuck out it seems there isn't any suggested etymology for jaga. While it’s a bit simple sounding, could I propose that jaga comes from “ja- and “ga”?

jā |n.| strategy, tactics; pattern [jā < tza < ta-za, from the stem ta ”elemental fire; leadership” and the stem za “planning, tactics”. Variant form: jō (ā > ō / __#)]

“Ga”

ga |n./stm.| 1. elemental water; 2. peace, calm, settledness; 3. tranquil, settled, undisturbed [ga < gā, from the primeval elemental stem gā “elemental water”. Variant forms: ga-, gal (l-modified), gau (u-modified), gaul/gol (u/l-modified), ag(a)i (verbal)] 

Essentially it would mean a tactical, silent sort of liquid or water, with connotations of fire in “ja”. A silent and tactical (in effect), burning elemental liquid, which to me sound a lot like the scorpion’s poison.

Now, while there’s already “Ler”, for “poison”:

It sounds like that definition’s referring almost to a miasma/bad-air of sorts, instead of a liquid poison a scorpion might inject. So there could be a kind of distinction? In that case the naming of the different kinds of jaga might call out the potency of each of their poisons? /Tangent So that’s my proposition I guess? I’ll leave it up to other folks to point out how thick I am - (I took a first year course in Linguistics, and a seminar on historical linguistics, but most of my credentials lie in socio-linguistic meaning. But at least now we might have a rough-and-ready definition for this little guy:

However, there were a couple entries for “ro, rho” but it looks like the underlying concept in the root work is a clear line, which appears to be the origin of truth (a distinction between truth and lie) rho |n./stm.| line, edge, boundary [etymology uncertain; Variant forms: ro, rō] rode |n.cmpd.| (Kanohi-) truth, clarity, clear communication; lit. “sound of word” [rode < ro-de, from ro “word, unit of communication” (variant of oro, see entry) and de “elemental sound”] rau |n.| (Kanohi-) translation, understanding [etymology uncertain; undoubtedly related to oro “word, unit of communication”, possibly rau < roua < ro-wa, from ro “word, unit of communication” and wa “wide, great, large; expanse”, yielding an original sense of “many words, expanse of words”] In the last entry we see the concept of multiples again tied into the boundaries (or sense of clarity) in language. From here we can assume that Janaro means a sense of clarity (distinct authority given in to intelligence) over language/commands given in (or to) large numbers, lit. “Authority over many”, which could be used to describe warlords but is more likely to be applied to a ruler of sorts. janaro |n./adj.| 1. a wise ruler, one who commands a nation 2. one whose words affect many

I noticed that theres no word exactly for universe in matoric, even though the concept of a universe and even a multiverse or alternate timelines is known to the matoran through the Kanohi Olisi and Olmek. There a reason why this is the case?

The closest term for what you described would probably be one of the following:

Whether or not Matoran and other MU inhabitants would properly distinguish between their world and alternate universes/timelines as separate and distinct "universes" is an open question, I think. I could imagine them viewing the different realms made accessible by the Olmak as simply extensions of their world, for example--just places housed in "another dome".

I was wondering if you could explain some terms used in your latest dictionary volume: Uta-class beings, Kaita Magna and Glata Magna?

Of course: I've answered the question about "Uta-class" beings in some detail in this post.

As for Kaita Magna and Glata Magna, these are references to events in the history of Spherus Magna. Kaita Magna ("Great Unity", a hybrid of Matoric kaita "unity" and Agoric magna "great") refers to the reforming of Spherus Magna by Mata Nui at the conclusion of the Bionicle storyline proper.

In contrast, Glata Magna "Great War" (glata "war, conflict") refers to the impending conflict amongst the Great Beings and other factions that was presaged (but never came to fruition) in the Bionicle serials.

So what exactly is a Uta-class intelligence and protoalchemy? The world building in the Matoric dictionary has me enthralled...

As for your two questions: first thing to keep in mind is that the Dictionary was written on reformed Spherus Magna about 100k years after the end of the events of Bionicle, so that's the lens through which the world of the Mata System and the Great Beings is being viewed.

An "Uta-Class Intelligence" is a term used to refer to beings like Artakha and Karzahni within the Mata System. They were General Artificial Intelligences designed to control various important aspects of the Mata System, under the administration of Mata Nui. There is also reference to Artakha and Karzahni specifically being "embodied", meaning that their AI was hosted within a physical body. The headcanony idea is that there may have been other AIs at work within the larger programming of the Mata System that never ended up having a consistent embodiment, or whose embodiment was temporary. The designation "Uta-Class" is part of a larger hierarchy, as follows:

Mata-Class - Beings at the level of Mata Nui, possibly Tren Krom

Uta-Class - Beings at the level of Artakha and Karzahni

Kuta-Class - Beings at the level of the Makuta, as well as beings like Toa and Turaga; in other words, beings that were self-actualizing ("Awakened") from the start of the Mata System.

Auta-Class: Automatons, beings that were designed without self-actualization at the start of the Mata System.

The emergence of self-actualization throughout the Mata System in the post-Launch millennia significantly blurred the distinctions between the lower two levels.

Lastly, the term "protoalchemy" is used in the Dictionary to essentially refer to the "magic-science" utilized by the Great Beings, which I have characterized as having its roots in even older traditions on Spherus Magna which predate the GBs.

This is ultra random and I hope I’m not crossing any lines, but I felt I had to thank you because your Matoric grammar book sort of helped me with surgery recovery? Turns out listing off the ways one could say „Midak sees Dosne“ is a pretty good distraction from pain.

That's certainly a new one, but I'm happy to hear it nonetheless! I know some would rather undergo surgery than list off grammatical forms lol
