HardWood Tonic System Reviews – HardWood Tonic Ingredients Scam Or Legit?
The review of the HardWood Tonic System ingredients in 2020 would give you a clear  understanding of the reasons and treatment of the erection condition and how to make it  stiffer and smoother and quickly improve your sexual experience. The manual on  blueprint will teach you strategies that will harden the long-lasting erection.
Most men may find erectile dysfunction a concern. Maybe the desire is there, but you  can’t act emotionally or how your partner may feel when he/she needs to be with you,  but you can’t.  These issues can cause you to feel depressed or frustrated with yourself, leading to a  self-confidence reduction. This will succeed in purchasing and taking some erectile  dysfunction drugs to stop experiencing any of these feelings and regain your stamina  and performance.
Sadly, these ED tablets you are taking have side effects. 1 in 30 men taking ED pills has  side effects that damage their vision and cause more problems. A fifth of men who drink  ED drugs still suffer migraines or, worse, a heart attack or stroke.  So, to sum up, these drugs are meant to try to help you with your ED issues, but they  also kill your other body functions in the process. Not looking like a good win-win  scenario, right?

The 1-minute tonic solution would guarantee that by supplying you with the following  suggestions and services, you are on your way to enhancing sex action;

Note
Have you played or experienced the Yakuza series? I'm really curious of how you feel about the character of majima goro, who was tortured before the games for a full year. Once released he spends game 0 trying to get back into the Yakuza, even though they're the ones who tortured him. He spends the rest of the games as a manic "joker-esque" character, becoming abusive towards his own subordinates, and becoming a master of disguise and personas, becoming almost impossible to read.
Ihaven’t played any of those games I’m afraid. And generally- I’mreluctant to review games on the basis of how much time they take toplay. It’s an investment of time akin to several tv series. Betweenthe blog, my job and my writing I don’t have an awful lot of freetime. (I have been playing and hugely enjoying Persona 5, which hassome interesting twists regarding the way they handle torture andsome interesting portrayals of survivors. I may review it later on.)
Basedon what you’ve said I’d consider this a very unrealisticdepiction of a torture survivor.
I’mnot sure where to begin- I suppose I’ll start with the time frame.A year is a very long time to be held by torturers and if a victim isbeing continuously tortured (ie every day) for that period of timethen whatever torture is used death before the end of the year isincredibly likely. This becomes even more likely when tortures arecombined and generally they are.
Scenarioslike this in fiction often assume a victim wouldbe tortured every day during captivity and this is often not whathappens in real life.
Torturehas a marked tendency to cause greater antagonism towards torturersand all they represent. Torture makes survivors more likely to resistand oppose groups they associate with torturers.
Sounless joining the Yakuza is a deliberate ploy to destabilise anddestroy them this seems incredibly unlikely.
Evenif it wasa deliberate ploy it still wouldn’t be typical behaviour in asurvivor. Most survivors avoidanything that reminds them of being tortured. Joining the groupresponsible for their torture seems likely to trigger their mentalhealth problems nearly constantly. I can’t imagine many survivorsvoluntarily doing anything like this.
Andif they did being constantly triggered by their environment would-well make for an incredibly ineffective Yakuza member. Someone in themiddle of a panic attack, a severe depressive episode etc is going tobe less good at their job then when they’re healthy, whatever thatjob might be.
Doingit soon after they were tortured seems even more unlikely. Therecovery period is generally years to decades. The way this characteris going straight from being tortured to joining his torturers is atbest unfortunate and at worst falling into the common tortureapologia trope that torture can be used to forcibly change a victim’sbeliefs.
I’munsure whether the rest of it is primarily a terrible depiction ofmental illness, a terrible depiction of torture or- What the hellit’s both.
Thesymptoms torture causes do not include mania and there’s nothing inthose symptoms that would make a survivor behave in a ‘Joker-esque’way.
Thevast majority of those symptoms would make disguise much much moredifficult. They’d make keepingupa consistent persona much more difficult. They’d make the basic actof remembering what the disguise or persona is supposed to be moredifficult. They’d make the likelihood of ‘breaking character’because of mental health symptoms much much higher-
Looksurvivors are capable of learning, growing, achieving their goals andbuilding the life they want to live. They can and do achieveincredible things.
Butthis scenario is like expecting a double above knee amputee to gostraight from the operating theatre to winning gold medals at theparalympics.
Asurvivor character mightbe capable of this degree of deception after recovery, intenseprofessional help and extensive training. Jumping straight into itafter torture? Virtually impossible.
It’sa massive misrepresentation of the kind of damage torture causes andthe effect those mental illnesses have on real people. It carries thestrong suggestion that mental illness makes people dangerous anduntrustworthy. It also seems to suggest that torture makes victimsabusers.
Thisis not true.
Theamount of torture apologia and/or damaging misrepresentation ofsurvivors in this character is just huge. Goingthrough the bullet point list I have of most common unrealistic anddamaging tropes- I think this arguably hits six out of eight.
It’sdefinitelyplaying in to the idea that torture survivors are ‘broken’. It’scertainlydepicting a survivor as incapable of living a normal, happy life. It’s definitelysuggesting that some responses to torture are ‘better’ thanothers and is morally judging the character for an unrealisticresponse that is nonetheless being shown as a symptom of torturebeyond the character’s control.
I’dargue that it’s alsostrongly suggesting torturers can control the responses victims have(he joins the Yakuza), that resistance to torture is unusual and thatsurvivors are forever defined by what they endured.
Itsounds generally like a very clumsy narrative use of torture.
Lookingat the scenario as a writer rather than through the lense of torturehere’s what I think the writers were trying to do:
Give the character a quick handwaved ‘motivation’ for anything bizarre the narrative makes him do
Attempt to make a villain sympathetic to the audience without actually investing any effort in the character or much narrative time in showing what he’s like
Provide an ‘explanation’ for the character being super humanly good at things without time or training
Provide an ‘explanation’ for the character being more aggressive and violent while trying to keep the character sympathetic
Theresult is a mess. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes about torturesurvivors and mentally ill people generally. But frankly- this isjust lazy.
Itlooks to me very much like the writers wanted the character to dohorrible things but couldn’t be bothered to commit and make himmorally responsible for his actions. Theyhad a series of actions they wanted the character to perform butcouldn’t be bothered to try to fit a consistent personality ormotivation to those actions. They wanted to write the charactersuffering but couldn’t be bothered to show the consequences of thatnarrative choice.
Sorather than do the work of creating a consistent character oradjusting the plot they tacked on an unrealistic stereotype of mentalillness.
Someabusers werevictims themselves. Survivor status does not confer moral superiorityor make people more ethical. Survivors are individuals and like anyother individuals they are capable of extreme behaviour, for good andill.
Butthis really isn’tthe way to discuss that issue. Because we know that the majority ofsurvivors do notgo on to become abusers whereas this sort of narrative suggests thatabuse always begets abuse.
Torturedoesn’t make people ‘special’.
Itdoesn’t give them a moral cop out excusing them from basic ethicaltreatment of others. It doesn’t make them super humanly good atanything, in fact it makes them more likely to struggle with learningnew skills and carrying on with old ones. It doesn’t make peopleviolent and it doesn’t make them weak.
Thesesorts of depictions are damaging. They teach people that torturesurvivors don’t need support after they’ve been tortured. Theyteach people that survivors are untrustworthy and violent.
Theytell survivors that they deserve the social rejection theyoverwhelmingly experience.
So-yes this is a poor depiction. Thatdoes not mean you’re wrong to enjoy the game.Every work of fiction has flaws. I think acknowledging those flaws isimportant but whether they take away our enjoyment of something is avery personal matter.
Ialso think that we should all strive to be the best we can be.Torture survivors in particular are incredibly poorly served bypopular fiction. So much of what’s available justifies, dismissesor condones atrocities sometimes even while trying to speak againstthem.
That’sbecause accurate information is so hard to find, because there aresystematic barriers to accessing that information.
Wecan do better.

Why would you need to feel guilty if you don't eat animals? i'm confused 😮 wouldn't it be a good thing if possible? I mean, since growing food for livestock is destroying the rainforest and isn't adopting a plant based diet one of the biggest things an individual can do to combat climate change?
As gently as I can manage: no, it's not that simple, and a plant-based diet as most folks think of it is not inherently better for the environment. Nothing any group of individuals from the general public can do will counteract the damage being done by big corporations.
tl;dr: A PBD is not inherently better for the environment, it highly depends on where you live and what you can/should buy, and many folks don't understand nor want to understand that. The history of food is a history of colonialism and violence and we need to address that, especially when it comes to veganism in North America and the importing of non-native foods to support it.
Full essay under the cut that I never meant to write but it sure did happen
Is it possible to go on a plant-based diet (a PBD, for future use of the term, because it will be popping up plenty here) within a localized area because it's more affordable/better for you/better for your environment? Yes. But it takes work to do so. As in, research, a willingness to buy and grow local, and an acute awareness of what the invasive species of your region are.
The unfortunate truth is that many people are unwilling or flat-out incapable of doing said research and work. They just want quick and easy access to plant-based food because they've heard somewhere that it's better and more humane than raising animals for meat/dairy/eggs. This is only possible because we live on colonized land, where we've created a massive distance between us and the origins of what we eat- and brought in non-native animal and plant species to reproduce what our colonizers eat, regardless of the impact on the land and the people. In fact, this was done very much on purpose. Native people reliant on colonial food systems are less likely to cause a ruckus, because they can just be starved out.
For an example, let's look at the Canadian North. The Inuit have hunted whales, seals, caribou, polar bear, and arctic char during the cold months in a sustainable fashion for thousands of years. Inuk people will hunt a single whale and feed their family for a year- never mind the uses for whale oil, baleen, and whale hide. They would use every part of the whale that they could find a use for, nothing was wasted. Nowadays, though... their traditional foods are called "barbaric" and "cruel", and hunting traditionally is frowned upon, while we ship fruit and vegetables that cannot be grown in permafrosted soil up to them and charge them as consumers for the cost to us. Here's a video from 2013 talking about the issue. From 2013! It's still happening now!! I would never recommend a PBD to someone living in such a situation because of both the expense and the destruction of the traditional hunting culture of the Inuit.
Before anyone tries to say I'm shitting on folks who can't eat meat- I'm really not. I get it, the lone star tick is an asshole of epic proportions, and allergies are a fuck you from the universe- I myself can't eat eggs! And they are in EVERYTHING! If we can accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions we absolutely should. I like to think there's a particularly shitty corner of the universe for people who think allergies are a joke or just someone being picky. But those are not choices. Those are required restrictions to keep the person alive and healthy.
Going vegan to "go green", on the other hand, is 100% a personal choice. Unfortunately it's also one frequently shaped by misinformation and propaganda. Vegans never really consider where their food comes from, and because the vast majority of them are city-dwellers who have access to a grocery store, they don't feel like they need to. It's not affecting them personally, so they don't care.
They should though. Many of the plants they rely on for food cause massive ecological damage, way more than growing feed for cattle, chickens, or pigs. Quinoa is farmed using child labour, and the sharp spike in price as white diners demand it- combined with the fact it's a thirsty crop that uses a lot of water that the locals also used as drinking water- kind of destroys any good it's doing by being a "superfood" (It was not a staple crop, however, and has done a little bit of good. Emphasis on a LITTLE BIT). Avocado is facing a similar situation- it was a staple food for the people growing it, now they can't afford it and they're resorting to inhumane measures to grow enough of it to meet white settler demand. (Also, if they fail to pay their cartel fees, they're very likely to have their farm burnt to the ground or worse. El Narco has their fingers in EVERYTHING, even in fruit production.) Cashews are mainly grown and processed in India, where workers suffer low pay and sweatshop conditions and caustic burns to ensure we have them to snack on. Soy products were once the main destructive force facing the Amazon rainforest, and now it's threatening the Cerrado and the millions of species that call the region home while filling local water supplies with silt and grime. There's also hundreds of reports detailing the slavery afoot at soy plantations, AND it's causing topsoil to erode faster.
No, meat and dairy as industries are not without fault. I never claimed they were. It's not hard to find things wrong with beef and dairy, and you can thank militant preachy vegans for that. You can also thank them for those horrifying ads everyone with a certain app spent their first two weeks blocking and reporting with a fervor like no other to make sure they stopped seeing them. (Or, maybe that was just me, idk what tiktok's deal is with giving me PETA and vegan propaganda videos but I'd like it to stop.) HOWEVER. The actual people producing my food, working the land to raise animals for meat and whatnot? They know what they're doing. Many of them have been studying husbandry and animal welfare since they were in middle school at the latest. I trust them to provide a good quality of life for a cow, chicken, pig, or bison that will end up on my plate one day.
Besides, they don't see me eating jerky instead of something I'm deathly allergic to and tell me a horror story about how the cow who provided it was flayed alive (yes, this has happened, more than once- it wasn't even beef jerky, it was bison from a local ranch). They just let me snack in peace and we go about both our days.

Genghis Khan claimed six wives and several girlfriends, which is why Jon Remington needed to know how he could please all these ladies without having to experience erectile dysfunctions. Jon learned that Khan used a little-known ancient Asian strategy to remain at the top of his game. Jon developed the now immensely successful 60 second HardWood Tonic recipe, mixing this with other real-life experiences.
 The 1-minute tonic solution would guarantee that by supplying you with the following suggestions and services, you are on your way to enhancing sex action;
 ●     A thorough analysis which shows you what caused erectile dysfunction.
●     A step-by-step guide about adding and gaining from amino acids and enzymes that help increase blood supply and potentially fight erectile dysfunction in your meals. However, as the nerves become stiff, they fail to allow adequate blood supply into the heart, thus causing an
incapability to keep an erection long enough. Simply put, the 60-second procedure highlights some of the amino acids and enzymes that need to be
used in our diet to make our nerves and blood vessels more relaxed and will contribute to prolonged sexual arousal erection.
●     You’ll get 60 HardWood Tonic Ratings from customers about how they’ve used the medication to treat erectile dysfunctions. It is claimed that the strategy has been used by thousands of men worldwide and performed well for them. And this can be confirmed by the numerous feedbacks contained

Bran Stark, Bran the Builder, and A Song of Ice and Fire
I’ve already written a meta on my comprehension of the title “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which you can find here.
Essentially, I am a firm believer that the title refers to the concept of balance, of the notion that everything in this universe has a counterpart, Ice has Fire, Death has Life, Good has Evil, etc. However, that particular analysis was specifically about Arya Stark, and it had me thinking of how the Big Five (Arya Stark, Bran Stark, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister) contribute to this idea of balance and their representation in the title. Since each analysis is incredibly long and I care about people’s attention spans, I’m splitting this into a meta of each main character.
Bran Stark It’s important to mention that Bran is the youngest of all the main POV characters, and yet, has the most profound storyline. He is often overlooked for more “active” character plots, but Bran’s magical abilities surpasses everyone - and I do believe at some point, he will be stronger than Bloodraven. As a powerful figure, and the rightful King in the North, Bran is at the very core of the story and could very well change everything. And no, I don’t believe he’s going to be a tree or revealed to be the Night King.
And yes, I believe he is Robb’s true heir. He is the trueborn son of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. If he chooses to accept his crown, the North and the Riverlands would openly support him over Jon or Sansa, the former a “bastard” and the latter written out of succession by Robb to protect Winterfell from the Lannisters. These are facts. Rickon and then Arya are Bran’s heirs. Until (or if) he chooses to reject his claim in the books (the show doesn’t count) I’m considering him the King in the North. And that is what I’m choosing to focus on, Bran’s role as the King of Winter. In terms of his role in the conflict and in the title, my theory is that Bran is Ice. Additionally, I do believe that Bran may become Bran the Builder 2.0, a successor to the first King of Winter and the first of his name.
Bran Stark and Daenerys Targaryen GRRM loves his parallels. In the same way that Daenerys is being set up to parallel Aegon the Conquerer with three dragons and the establishment of House Targaryen, Bran has parallels to the legendary founder of House Stark. I’ve already written about how everything has a counterpart, and while Bran’s magical abilities overpower even that of the Old Gods in some aspects, his storyline serves to parallel Daenerys Targaryen. Dany and Bran’s parallels are subtle yet fascinating. Early examples are their encounters with their respective elements and “singing.” Bran hears the wolves singing in his coma, Dany hears dragon fire singing in her dreams.
Both witness the graves of their ancestors either literally in a crypt, or in a dream where they line a hallway. Both experience visions, have spiritual mentors, think of marriage when describing the weirwood/pyre (symbols of Ice and Fire) and have special relationships with their respective animals that they identify with.
Both are capable of flying, either literally on a dragon or by warging. Both have survived assassin attempts on their lives. Both have been severely underestimated in their capabilities. Both have magic intricately woven into their storylines. Both are said to be incapable of carrying children. Both are heirs to the thrones of Kings that built their houses. The connections are too numerous to be pure coincidence.
Bran the Builder Ned Stark had told Arya that while Bran would never be a knight, he could raise a castle like his namesake. In the show’s video of the history of Westeros, narrated by Isaac Hempstead Wright himself, Bran the Builder is portrayed as being carried onto a platform, and several people have theorized that he was, in fact, a cripple. Another passage of note is in Clash of Kings when Durran is said to raise a seventh castle, the largest of them all, and that he was directed to do so by a small boy, one who would Bran the Builder someday. At such a young age, he showed initiative and leadership, much like Bran Stark did when he was Lord of Winterfell in his brother’s absence. Moreover, Bran the Builder built the Wall after the first great battle with the Others with the help of giants, and is said to have known the Children of the Forest. We’ve all seen the Wall - there’s no way it was made by hand, even giant hands. GRRM wrote a story about the Ice Dragon, and one interesting part about it was that, upon their death, a highly reflective pond is created in what would be their ashes, leaving the surroundings much colder. You know what’s a highly reflective pond in a cold environment? The pools in the godswood of Winterfell. Catelyn Stark even makes a point to say she always feels cold around it. Bran the Builder is speculated to be a warg, so one can imagine him warging into an Ice Dragon to not only help with defeating the Others, but in creating the Wall. The proximity of the possible grave of an Ice Dragon lends credence to the theory. Bran is growing to be an increasingly powerful warg, and it isn’t hard to see him one day controlling a dragon. Moreover, Bran’s nickname is “The Winged Wolf.” Bloodraven told him that he would never walk again, but he would fly. This could be more to do with him becoming the Three Eyed Raven, but I think there are several readings to Bran and flying. There is a very popular fan theory that Bran will one day warg into one of Dany’s dragons, and I have a feeling it could be an undead one, much like Viserion in the show. Alternatively, there is another theory that a dragon sleeps under Winterfell that could very well be a true Ice Dragon, and it may wake soon (in the books, of course). Thus Bran has a parallel with his predecessor in controlling an Ice Dragon. I also feel like Bran will play a massive role in potentially creating a new pact with the Others, as I don’t believe they will be entirely defeated. This is where his connection and understanding of the past is integral. In this new pact, he’ll probably reconstruct the Wall after its fall (because it will fall) and then return to Winterfell and oversee the rebuilding of his home as the King in the North. In the process, he’ll help to restore what has remained of House Stark. I don’t think Bran is sterile as they say, so it’s most likely his sons that will continue the Stark line.
Bran and Balance To just tie in to my original theme of balance, Bran Stark’s role in the conflict and in restoring harmony is in his rebuilding of the North, the Wall and his potential responsibility in creating a peace between the Others and humans. Currently, the impending imbalance of Ice and Fire is the arrival of Winter and the Others. Fire has responded with the birth of Dragons, but Ice is responsible for the imbalance, and Bran could be the one to bring it back in harmony to Fire, with Dany’s help. Bran Stark, the King of Winter, the Winged Wolf, is the Ice of A Song of Ice and Fire.
These are just my muses, but if anyone has anything else to add, then as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Note
Hey. I've had some schizoid traits for as long as I can remember, but they seem non-disordered. I'm around 20 years old now. Recently I've been getting more and more closed off even from the idea of befriending people and I've felt drained and apathetic almost constantly. Could I be developing full-blown SzPD now? And if so, is there anything I can do to change how it plays out?
Yes, that sounds really similar to what manifestation of szpd often feels like. I could say about the same thing around your age. If that’s the case, it’ll take a few more years before it settles to something consistent.
Until then it might be a bit turbulent, like you may suddenly feel like you’re in some kind of emotional void, incapable of any emotion at all. Or that the only desire you have left is to be left alone and never see another human being in your life. Other times it might change back to trying to play covert, force communication on yourself and pretend to be a friend of everyone you know.
Then of course those attempts are likely to fail to pass as sincere, and trigger alienation response from people, which in turn may or may not cause you to eventually get to a conclusion that this world is beyond repair and it’s time to look for a new planet — or at least some place far enough where none of those two-legged creatures would reach you.
Now, what to do about it? Well, I can’t say for sure if there’s anything you can really do to avoid a full-blown schizoid personality disorder manifestation, especially if it’s already started. But since there’s little harm in trying, I can at least think of a few things that, in my subjective opinion, could’ve affected my own personality when I was a little younger and not yet this schizoid.
First thing that comes to mind is a positive, safe environment. Supportive and approving people around you that won’t force anything on you. Yes, even if you don’t care of any approval or support (I didn’t back then). Especially if you don’t feel it would affect you in any meaningful way. Because even if it won’t, the lack of it would actually affect you eventually. You won’t feel it, but it’ll definitely add up to the multitude of reasons to withdraw from people.
Next would be to stop trying to fit in and stop experiencing failure after failure in those attempts. At least for a few years until you can handle those failures better. Because it’s unlikely to be not a failure — being schizoid during manifestation kinds grants that outcome in 9 cases out of 10.
The rare exceptions being those very few people who can digest schizoid personality with sincere, honest pleasure. Not just being polite, but actually being ok with you being barely emotional at all, not following social cues, being rude on occasion, ignoring their precious feels, disagreeing to participate in whatever social activities, withdrawing and outright ignoring them for weeks and even months and behaving in a way it would seem like they are the only ones interested in whatever relationship.
If there is somehow a person who is really, really ok with all of that, while still treating you as an equal, finding enough motivation to interact with you to balance on that edge of hauling the whole friendship on their shoulders alone with little to no input from your end without being annoying and intrusive… Well, that’d be some unrealistic dream pixi person, but that could definitely make some difference between being a decent non-disordered schizoid with massive potential or a loner with no hope in humanity in five more years.
Other important moment being some kind of personal, private space where you can retreat whenever you no longer feel like dealing with people (and by that I mean before you’re so sick of people that you can no longer see their faces without rolling your eyes in despair). Where you can be without expecting that someone would suddenly open the door and shower you with a ton of unwanted socialization.
Also getting independent as soon as possible is actually a good thing — despite what it may seem like it might even push you deeper into PD and away from people. I think there’s a lesser chance you’d go that far if there’s a smaller timeframe between being theoretically capable to sustain yourself and actually living on your own terms — you have less time to get so sick and tired of being dependent on other people to a point where you can no longer bear a thought of ever living alongside someone else and depending on them even a slightest.
Aside from that… well, researching some more about what szpd is, reading from other people’s experiences with it, understanding it better… Maybe finding your own ways to somehow consciously stop yourself from retreating to the solutions that are a known defensive mechanisms of szpd. Not forbidding them for yourself, but just… trying to look for less radical and harmful alternatives?
Maybe it’d help if you know that the void you’re feeling isn’t quite what it seems, that it might eventually get less void-y. Maybe finding something interesting to keep yourself motivated — while you still find yourself capable of being motivated, that is — could help a bit too. Some creativity, like maybe music or art. Even if you aren’t exactly all that much into that kind of things.
Anything that would be interesting without leading you to the idea that, y’know, doing this thing is less boring than most other things, but showing it to anyone would drag unwanted attention to me, or even worse — what if someone finds useful those things I do? Because making anything useful for those nasty people who alienate me is so much not an option.
Well, yeah, that way of thought usually leads you to a comfort of fully manifested szpd. ^_^ It’s nice and fuzzy down here, but kinda boring, I’d say. So if that’s still an option for you, try to find some interest and/or pleasure in doing good things at least for those people who are nice to you. It doesn’t have to be the whole of humanity or just random strangers like customers. But creating something that can get approval from other people and having no issue about sharing that with them and even feeling a tiny bit good about it… If you still can do that after a few more years — I’d say that definitely would mean you’re in a safe zone from szpd by then.
Alright, that’s all I can think of. Followers, add your thoughts if you have manifested szpd… or just if you have thoughts about it, either way.

Thinking Like a Scientist and Skeptic - Honing Your BS Detector
Richard Feynman said that the fundamental principle of science is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool. Scientists like Feynman understand the value of good reasoning, skepticism, logic and rationality. Yet as Carl Sagan argued the benefits of such traits and tools aren’t merely benefits to science, they apply just as necessarily and just as effectively to everyday life.
The intention of this post is to be a guide to encouraging scientific thinking and skepticism within your normal life, to inducting the tools into your mental toolkit. In the previous post I argued that while the most intellectually responsible thing to do is to vet each piece of information you encounter, in practical terms this is not possible. It is simply not feasible to look up every last claim that passes your way. There is a real, tangible benefit to having good heuristics, to having a finely honed BS detector.
This post will be broken into three parts - The first portion is Carl Sagan’s Nine Principles for scientific and skeptical reasoning, from The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark. The second is a list of common logical or rhetorical fallacies, these are in no particular order, but they are what I have found to be the most common. The final part is 12 questions that you can ask of a claim to help determine how likely it is to be viable (its chance of being BS), adapted from work done by Skeptic magazine.
Part 1 – Principles for Scientific and Skeptical Reasoning
Here are Sagan's Principles for sound reasoning and scientific thinking:
1. Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the “facts.”
(Try to see if a source other than the source making the claim has verified/reported the facts in question. The more sources you can find independently verifying these facts the better, as a single source might be biased .)
2. Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.
3. Arguments from authority carry little weight — “authorities” have made mistakes in the past. They will do so again in the future. Perhaps a better way to say it is that in science there are no authorities; at most, there are experts.
(No doubt we can all think of authority figure who is wrong about something. Though I should note that this does not mean that experts should just be dismissed out of hand, they are more reliable than not as they have spent their lives investigating a topic, just be sure not to take expert opinions are set in stone fact.)
4. Spin more than one hypothesis. If there’s something to be explained, think of all the different ways in which it could be explained. Then think of tests by which you might systematically disprove each of the alternatives. What survives, the hypothesis that resists disproof in this Darwinian selection among “multiple working hypotheses,” has a much better chance of being the right answer than if you had simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.
5. Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it’s yours. It’s only a way station in the pursuit of knowledge. Ask yourself why you like the idea. Compare it fairly with the alternatives. See if you can find reasons for rejecting it. If you don’t, others will.
(Acknowledge the bias you have for ideas that are yours or that you hold dear. If you leave it up to others, you will be expose… and then laughed at.)
6. Quantify. If whatever it is you’re explaining has some measure, some numerical quantity attached to it, you’ll be much better able to discriminate among competing hypotheses. What is vague and qualitative is open to many explanations. Of course there are truths to be sought in the many qualitative issues we are obliged to confront, but finding them is more challenging.
7. If there’s a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) — not just most of them. A single weak link in the logical chain can doom the entire theory.
8. Occam’s Razor. This convenient rule-of-thumb urges us when faced with two hypotheses that explain the data equally well to choose the simpler.
(Only use Occam’s Razor when two hypothesis explain the data equally well, don’t be tempted to fall for a simpler sounding solution if it explains less.)
9. Always ask whether the hypothesis can be, at least in principle, falsified. Propositions that are untestable, unfalsifiable are not worth much. Consider the grand idea that our Universe and everything in it is just an elementary particle — an electron, say — in a much bigger Cosmos. But if we can never acquire information from outside our Universe, is not the idea incapable of disproof? You must be able to check assertions out. Inveterate skeptics must be given the chance to follow your reasoning, to duplicate your experiments and see if they get the same result.
Part 2 - Common rhetorical or logical fallacies
No doubt you have heard of one of the many logical fallacies observed in the tragic landscape that is internet arguments. There are many logical/rhetorical fallacies out there but the following are (in my perception) some of the most common.
Ad hominem – The ad hominem attack is an attack on the person making the argument, it does not respond to the argument at all. - Ex. Insults and attacks on the person’s character.
Argument form authority – This is the reliance on the fact that the claim came from a perceived authority figure, rather than on good evidence or reasoning. - Ex. “My dad works at Microsoft and he says they are putting chips in all their products that steal your soul!”
(This is something you will often see in claims made by alternative medicine. They will frequently have proposed experts touting the effectiveness of their products but frequently those PhDs were earned in something completely unrelated to any medical or biological fields.)
Appeal to anecdotal evidence – Relying on personal anecdotes as evidence. The argument is often made by someone who believes that their personal experiences reflect the nature of the entire world, not realizing they are not statically representative of the world. - Ex. “My neighbor hates road noise and still would never vote for a city noise ordinance.”
Appeal to ignorance – An argument that if something is not known to be false, it must be true. - Ex. “There is no compelling evidence that UFOs are not visiting the Earth; therefore UFOs exist.”
Argument from adverse consequences - Saying that because the implications of a statement being true would create negative results, it must not be true. - Ex. “Legislation to reduce greenhouse gases would negatively impact certain companies, therefore greenhouse gases do not negatively impact the environment.”
Weasel Words - The usage of vague, non-specific terminology or references. "They don't want you to know about this…" "Some people have gained massive benfits from our products..." Who’s “They”? Which people, specifically?
(Frequently used to make outrageous claims without having to provide a specific example, especially if it would seem dubious or improbable if a concrete example were offered.)
Special pleading – When the maker of the claim argues for special considerations for a particular premise of theirs. Usually this is because in order for the argument to work, they need to provide some way to get out of a logical inconsistency. Very frequently the sign that an argument is logically foundering. – Ex. “People who drive drunk should receive prison time, but you should overlook it in my case since I am usually such a good person.”
Observational selection - Focusing on evidence that supports your case while ignoring evidence that disproves it. This is a form of selection bias, where you count the hits and forgetting the misses. – Ex. When a person notices something they never noticed before and wrongly assume that the frequency has increased.
Misunderstanding the nature of statistics – Simply not understanding how statistics work. - Ex. Being surprised that half of all Americans have an IQ that is below average of 100 when 100 was set as the average score in the first place.
Confusion of correlation and causation – Simply put, correlation does not imply causation. Two things can be correlated without having any causal relationship between them. - Ex. If a friend of yours came to you telling you about this awesome new hydra repellant they bought, and they know it works because they haven’t seen a single hydra since buying it, they are confusing correlation and causation… you should also probably stop talking to them.
(Related is the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, which is thinking that something caused something else simply because one thing came first chronologically.)
Excluded middle or False dichotomy – Asserting that there can be no middle ground between two options, that you can only pick one option or the other. – Ex. “Buy our product and live, or don’t buy it and die horribly.” And most famously, “You are either with us or against us.”
Suppressed evidence and half-truths – Suppressing or leaving out relevant information when making a claim. Frequently seen in the debate surrounding global climate change. Climate change deniers like to argue that there is still debate amongst scientists over whether anthropogenic global warming is real. This may be true but it is 99% of scientists debating that last 1%. What was ignored is that the overwhelming consensus on the issue is that global climate change is a very real phenomenon.
Slippery slope – Condemning something that is loosely related to something that is morally wrong via asserting that negative consequences will necessarily result from allowing the first thing. – Ex. “If we continue to allow legalized abortion, soon we will be euthanizing people under 18 years of age.”
Tu quoque – “You do it too!” Claiming that since the source of an argument has acted in ways inconsistent with the argument it must be wrong. This focuses on the hypocrisy of an individual rather than dealing with the argument the individual made. A person may have sincere beliefs and good reasoning/evidence to back up their position, but still not be able to follow through on it due to lack of willpower.
Strawman – Making a dishonest characterization of somebody’s argument, misrepresenting their argument to make it easier to defeat.
(The internet’s favorite person to argue against.)
As a final note, keep in mind while that an argument may use a logical fallacy this does not mean the conclusion of that argument is wrong. It is possible to get to the correct conclusion of an argument by incorrect means, so don’t completely toss out an argument simply because of the presence of a logical fallacy. However, it does mean that you should pay very close attention if a fallacy is spotted.
Part 3 - Skeptical questions to ask about a claim:
Does it align with the way the world usually functions:
Is someone offering you something extraordinary for little to nothing in return? Has someone contacted you offering to give you 100,000 dollars if only you’ll pay them 500 to help them get across the country? There’s very rarely such a thing as a free lunch, and if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Beyond that remember that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
Approximately how reliable is the source of the claim?:
Learn about the source of the claim. If they show you a bunch of data and there are errors in the data or claim (and there often is), the errors shouldn't skew in one particular direction or another. They should not be making incorrect claims but only on one side of the argument for example. Keep an eye out for potential bias and potential conflicts of interest.
Have claims been independently verified by someone else?:
Remember that scientific claims should be, if at all possible, testable and repeatable. Likewise facts and reports should be independently confirmed by others unrelated to the person or group making the claim, to eliminate possible biases and confabulation amongst like-minded group members. If there’s a hot new item out on the market making really bold claims, but nobody else seems to have tested or reviewed it yet, you should be suspicious and you probably want to hold onto your money for a while.
Have people tried to disprove the claim?:
What are the counterarguments to the claim? Remember that scientific claims should be, if at all possible, testable and repeatable. If other people have managed to replicate an experiment, you can be more assured of its veracity. Remember that science works by trying to disprove a claim, the more people have tried to disprove it but it survives, the more likely it is to be true. There are countless tests of the theory of gravity everyday, and nobody goes on about it being “just a theory”.
Is there a preponderance of evidence?:
There should be many multiple pieces of evidence, not just one. Look for concordance between varying fields of study. One of the reasons the theory of evolution is so compelling is because it is supported by multiple fields of investigation. It isn’t backed up by only the fossil record, it’s backed up by DNA research and morphology. The more evidence you can find coming from more places, the better off you are.
Are the people making the claim providing positive evidence?:
“My inability to disprove your theory is not at all the same thing as you having proved it true.”
The people making the claim need to have actual positive evidence of their own. If they are simply just dismissing evidence presented to them and unwilling or unable to present evidence of their own, that should raise serious questions about the validity of their claim. Consider how hard it is to prove a negative. I can’t prove that the interior of Neptune is not filled with mole-like robots, but that does not mean you should suppose that claim to be true. The burden of proof is on the one making the claim.
Do personal beliefs influence the claim being made?: People have biases, including scientists. (And me.) But science tries to do all it can to help account for those biases. This is the reason for anonymous peer review boards and  double blind studies. Watch out for claims being made that seem to be pushed forward by personal agendas.
Does the source often make claims of a similar sort?:
Very often people who make extraordinary claims tend to believe in other extraordinary things. A Bigfoot hunter may not only believe in Bigfoot, but also Nessie and hundreds of other cryptids as well, all of which have a low likelihood of actually existing. In addition they may believe in UFOs and alien abductions. This suggests they are unlikely to be following a trail of evidence to a conclusion, but are instead cherry-picking data which supports favored and similar phenomena to support a particular worldview.
Are the individuals making the claim behaving in a scientific manner?:
Are those behind the claim behaving like scientists? Are they testing their claim, trying to falsify it? Is it falsifiable? One of the hallmarks of a conspiracy theory is that it is, by its nature, not falsifiable. Any evidence levied against it can always be waved away as part of the conspiracy. Someone who is behaving in a scientific manner is always open to reviewing evidence that might contradict or falsify their claim. Scientists are always trying to find alternative explanations for a phenomenon. Pseudoscience often looks for evidence then fits the evidence into the theory they want to support.
Does the new theory being proposed account for as much phenomena as the old theory?:
In any theory there may be a few things that are mysteries or unexplained phenomena. Science will continue to try and improve on the theory to account for these discrepancies. Yet often a new theory that may one phenomena at the expense of all the other currently explained phenomena, which means it is not as good of a theory.
Is there a reliance on jargon or obfuscation?
If something has many unfamiliar words or phrases, or else seems to contain a lot of scientific sounding terms in inappropriate contexts you ought to be suspicious. One of the hallmarks of pseudoscience is that it often has scientific trappings. As an example, in physics the term “energy” only means an  objects ability to “do work” – to move something or affect a change. Yet a lot of, shall we say, new age-y types tend to use the term energy to refer to some form of mystical vitality or lifeforce. There is similar abuse of the word “quantum”. To be clear this does not mean whenever there is a term you do not understand that you should be suspicious, merely that you should exercise caution if terms are misused or else a passage seems to be constructed with a deliberate attempt to confuse/mislead.
 Is it too simple?
Let’s propose that somebody came to you selling a mysterious black box that claimed to fix everything wrong with your car. Would you but it? No, you wouldn’t because you understand that the various things wrong with your car each have their own unique cause and need to be addressed individually. Similarly, it would not be a good idea to buy a cure-all potion that promises to fix all your health problems. The world is a complex place, there are no cure-alls. Once again, if it seems too good be true, it probably is.
 ---
There you go, there’s your BS detection kit. These nine principles, a handful of logical fallacies, and twelve questions will help you be a more skeptical, rational individual. If you learn them and employ them you will be well on your way to shining light on so much of the misinformation and falsehoods that pervade life. We can’t all be perfect skeptics and rational people every moment of everyday, but this is a good first step.

Part IV- In class Questions
Zoos
a)
I believe that zoos should a very small, but important role in the the conservation of species. Zoos for the most part, should be a last resort for attempting to save a species. In the case of some endangered species, like the rhinoceros, who is often poached for its horn, or elephants, who are poached for their ivory tusks. Perhaps physically keeping these animals away from poachers can aid in their survival. However, if zoos were to implement this, they would need to ensure that there is more than enough space for the animal to roam (in enclosures much larger than those in current zoos), in an appropriate location for the species, so that it has the best chance of recovering its population, if possible. In this case, relying on the goodwill of the workers and visitors of the zoo, the animals will be safe from harm, and visitors of the zoo can see the animal “in real life”, learn about the species and its struggle for survival. In turn, visitors may be more sensitive about the struggle of species in response to the impact of man and may make an effort to make a change in their community’s morals or attitudes towards conservation of species.
As for education, our current zoos clearly put in effort to educate its visitors about the animal the visitor is looking at by mentioning things such as the animals’ name, where it is found in the wild, its role in its food web, interesting symbiotic relationships or alliances with other species, whether or not it is an endangered or threatened species, and perhaps man’s impact on the species. From my own experience, I have noticed that zoos try to make their informational plaques about certain animals as educational and concise as possible, so that people are more inclined to read and learn about the animal. I believe that zoos do a good job of educating its visitors about the animals, especially if the zoos are taking care to try and draw special attention to species that are experiencing low population numbers. If the zoos are lucky, visitors will feel moved by being in the presence of the animal in the zoo and may even take steps to attempt to help protect that species or at least inform their friends and family about the dangers that our earth’s animals are facing. In a way, zoos may be essential for informing the public about species of concern because, if someone does not have an appreciation for something because they haven't been able to experience a particular feeling or event, it is very likely they will not be able to commiserate with the cause or sympathize with the animal. If this is the case, physically being in the presence of the animal makes a significant difference in the  sympathy of the viewer.
b)
Our current model of zoos are incapable of accurately providing animals with what they require to live a “normal” life for that species. Without even considering the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council’s “Five Freedoms,” mentioned in Dr. McCance’s lecture on Zoos, the glaring issue that I have with zoos is that these animals, who may not even be native to the part of the world the zoo is in, has to live in a very small enclosure, relative to what they would experience in the wild. The animals in the enclosures do not have the ability to actually do a flat-out run in a straight line for more than a few seconds, and tragically for some animals, may have never even been able to experience the natural habitat they are native to. These poor creatures have no sense of how vastly open and free an open field is, in the same way that an animal that has been caged indoors for its entire life has no concept of what grass is, or how a person from a tropical island finds the concept of snow foreign and don't grasp how cold it can really be -- because they have never experienced true openness, true freedom, or real cold. Perhaps if zoos functioned more like nature preserves in Africa or the United States, where the animals are allowed to roam freely, or as “normal” as possible, given the human presence. However, if these were to be “zoos”, then one would not be able to see tigers and polar bears at the same zoo. Unfortunately, modern zoos are not designed to be 100 % appropriate for the species that occupies the space, leaving our practices unethical.
c)
As a child, I really loved going to zoos to look at the animals and watch them interact with one another. At the time, I had no appreciation or understanding of what zoos do when there are too many of a species with no space to hold them in and other dark secrets that zoos typically don't advertise. Today, I do not enjoy visiting zoos as much because I know that our practices in zoos are almost always unethical or zoo coordinators are unable to cover their bases in regards to properly caring for an animal, as we saw in the Blackfish film (Blackfish, 2013).
Food
a)
A few things that I like about my food system is that, when I can, I do my best to buy local at farmers markets and if generate any organic scraps or waste from my food, it all goes into my compost bin. I support farmers markets because it supports my community and because the means that a particular good took to plant, grow, harvest, and transport those goods to the market usually have a significantly smaller environmental impact than large companies who receive, pack, and distribute their goods on a large scale. Large scale producers create huge amounts of waste from the packaging materials and vast amounts of pollution when receiving goods from farmers and when distributing those processed goods to their various sales outlets. Buying local can sometimes imply that non-factory faming was used to raise a particular good such as livestock or crops, meaning that there is a greater chance that that animal experienced more ethical treatment than an industrial farmed animal. If this fact is true and the animals were not raised on a factory farm, it is more likely that the animals were exposed to lower levels of growth hormones or antibiotics because they were not needed to keep animals healthy due to the poor conditions of mass production. According to the Domestication and Consumption lecture given by Dr. McCance, there are traceable amounts of these hormones in our food at slaughter, which we in turn consume and allow to accumulate in our bodies. The Food and Drug Administration explains that animals treated with these hormones are safe to eat at any point after the animal has been treated (FDA, 2017). Unfortunately, due to the lack of concrete research done on the effects of these steroids or antibiotics on human health, additionally, the amounts of steroids administers and the frequency of these doses is not consistent, making it even more difficult to measure the scope of of potential impacts on human health (Landers, 2012).
Foods from farmers markets are often fresher than other commercially produced because they do not need to be shipped over long distances. The freshness of food has a huge impact on its flavor and its likelihood of being sold. Like many others, I support farmers markets in an attempt to reduce waste. Having worked in the produce section of a grocery store, I know that every day, stores can throw out hundreds of pounds of food each day. Fortunately, Zup’s Grocery, in the small town where I worked, allowed some of the employees to take home some of the produce that wasn’t shelf-worthy or that had expired according to its label. This is not practiced in many grocery stores, allowing food that isn't even spoiled to be thrown away and wasted. The benefit of farmers market is that since they typically not transporting their wares in bulk, their produce arrives on the shelves looking as fresh as it did when it was harvested or produced from the farm, preventing perfectly good food from going to waste. Finally, from my own experience, I have found that fresh produce or meats are often of higher quality than those found in a supermarket, and their overall flavor is better.
b)
When shopping for groceries, I try my best to buy products that are sourced from ethically accredited companies. However, some of these products are more expensive than their non-ethically sourced counterparts, and as a university student, I find it can be a challenge to make choices that support ethical sourcing and social welfare both domestically and abroad. Along with trying to support humane companies, I also make an attempt to buy products with as little packaging as possible, but this usually only applies to fresh produce. I dislike how many products I purchase that are heavily processed and packaged in thick, non-recyclable plastics. I understand that heavily processing food is not only bad for human health, but it is also hard on the environment. Yet I go on consuming these products because they are more convenient or cheaper, and sometimes in my mind taste better. After attending Dr. McCance’s lectures for Environmental Issues, I learned the full scope of the impact that food waste, pollution, and consumerism has on the earth, and the significant dangers we will face if we do not change our ways of life. I know that
Oceans
a)
My primary concerns with the ocean include the vast amount of pollution that has accumulated in our oceans, increasing acidification of the ocean, and the capacity for the oceans to hold carbon dioxide. In Dr. McCance’s lecture on Oceans, I learned that there are massive amounts of plastics floating in the North Pacific--about twice the size of the continental United States. The plastics and pollution floating in our oceans can contain persistent organic pollutants such as PCBs, PAHs, and DDE are consumed by zooplankton, who make up the base of the food chain. Jellyfish typically feed on zooplankton, but the minuscule fragments of plastics in the oceans resemble the zooplankton, and jellyfish end up consuming a significant amount of plastic particles. In fact, plastic outnumbers zooplankton in the oceans by 7 to 1. These jellyfish are in turn consumed by other ocean animals such as fish or aquatic mammals spreading the toxic chemicals through the food chain, which can eventually end up in the food of people all around the world (McCance Oceans, 2017).
Ocean acidification is occurring as a result of pollution and global warming. Dr. McCance explained that increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has resulted in elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the ocean, to such a degree that it is affecting the ability of the primary producers who consume the carbon dioxide to synthesize it and remove it from the atmosphere. Increased pollution and habitat destruction are more obstacles that these primary producers, phytoplankton, face. Problems with the stability of phytoplankton populations has big implications for species who rely on this species for survival. For example, Dr. McCance explained in her Oceans in Peril lecture that acidification of the oceans causes coral reefs to expel the symbiotic algae and microorganisms necessary to support the ecosystem, in turn "bleaching” the coral. Coral bleaching significantly decreases the biodiversity within that ecosystem and can in turn affect other populations of fish that rely on this ecosystem for food.
As a result of ocean acidification, phytoplankton populations are decreasing in size. This is incredibly concerning considering that phytoplankton is thought to produce over half of the oxygen that land animals breathe, and as I mentioned earlier, phytoplankton are the foundation of the oceanic food web. Removing this species from the food web would have catastrophic implications for the entire planet. Oceanic populations of species will collapse due to a lack of food and our atmospheres’ stores of breathable air will slowly be depleted. Needless to say, if there is no breathable oxygen or food for species to survive off of, humans, animals, and plants will die off very rapidly (McCance Oceans, 2017)
b)
I will respond to the degradation of our earth’s oceans by reminding myself of the impact that my consumer choices have on the environment, especially when it comes to using plastics. Instead of using non-recyclable and non-biodegradable plastics for storage containers, I can switch to products like glass or biodegradable plastics. I can also attempt to make less purchases of goods that are heavily processed and packaged in an attempt to reduce the amount of inorganic, non-biodegradable waste I generate.

Decomposition: The Ultimate Stage of Bourgeois Thought
By Guy Debord
"Guy Debord calls himself a filmmaker. Member of the Situationist International, of which he was one of the founders in 1957. For a long time, the responsible party for the publications of the SI in France. Also now and then involved in the different activities of this organization in several countries where situationist agitation was propagated, notably in Germany, England and Italy (sometimes calling himself Gondi or Decayeux). In 1967 published The Society of the Spectacle. The following year, a figure among the leaders of the most extreme current at the time of the troubles of May 1968. Following these events, his theses acquired a great influence in European and American ultra-Leftism. French. Born in 1931, in Paris." -- Autobiographical note in detourned style for the Champ Libre edition of The Society of the Spectacle.
The two main centers of “modern” culture are Paris and Moscow. The styles originating in Paris (the majority of whose elaborators are not French) influence Europe, America and the other developed countries of the capitalist zone such as Japan. The styles imposed administratively by influence all the workers states and also have a slight effect on Paris and its European zone of influence. The Moscow influence is directly political. The persistence of the traditional influence of Paris stems partly from its long-entrenched position as professional cultural center.
Because bourgeois thought is lost in systematic confusion and Marxist thought has been profoundly distorted in the workers states, conservatism reigns both East and West, especially in the domain of culture and customs. This conservatism is overt in Moscow, which has revived the typically petit-bourgeois attitudes of the 19th century. In Paris it is hidden, disguised as anarchism, cynicism or humor. Although both of these ruling cultures are fundamentally incapable of dealing with the real problems of our time, relevant experimentation has been carried further in the West. In the context of this sort of cultural production, the Moscow zone functions as a region of underdevelopment.
In the bourgeois zone, where an appearance of intellectual freedom has generally been tolerated, the knowledge of the movement of ideas and the confused vision of the multiple transformations of the social environment tend to make people aware of an ongoing upheaval whose motivating forces are out of control. The reigning sensibility tries to adapt itself to this situation while resisting new changes that present new dangers. The solutions offered by the retrograde currents ultimately come down to three main attitudes: prolonging the fashions produced by the dada-surrealism crisis (which crisis is simply the sophisticated cultural expression of a state of mind that spontaneously manifests itself wherever previously accepted meanings of life crumble along with previous lifestyles); settling into mental ruins; or returning to the distant past.
In the first case, a diluted form of surrealism can be found everywhere. It has all the tastes of the surrealist era and none of its ideas. Its aesthetic is based on repetition. The remnants of orthodox surrealism have arrived at the stage of occultist senility, and are as incapable of articulating an ideological position as they are of inventing anything whatsoever. They lend credence to increasingly crude charlatanisms and engender others.
Setting up shop in nullity is the cultural solution that has been most visible in the years following World War II. This solution includes two possibilities, each of which has been abundantly illustrated: dissimulating nothingness by means of an appropriate vocabulary, or openly flaunting it.
The first of these options has become particularly famous since the advent of existentialist literature, which has reproduced, under the cover of a borrowed philosophy, the most mediocre aspects of the cultural evolution of the preceding three decades and augmented its mass-media-based notoriety by doses of fake Marxism and psychoanalysis and by successive announcements of more or less arbitrary political engagements and resignations. These tactics have generated a very large number of followers, avowed or unacknowledged. The continuing proliferation of abstract painting and its associated theories is another example of the same nature and scope.
The complacent affirmation of total mental nullity is exemplified by the recent neoliterary phenomenon of “cynical young right-wing novelists,” but is by no means limited to right-wingers, novelists, or semi-youth.
Among the tendencies calling for a return to the past, the doctrine of Socialist Realism has proven to be the most durable, because its indefensible position in the domain of cultural creation seems to be supported by its appeal to the conclusions of a revolutionary movement. At the 1948 conference of Soviet musicians, Andrei Zhdanov revealed the stake of theoretical repression: “Haven’t we done well to preserve the treasures of classic painting and to suppress the liquidators of painting? Wouldn’t the survival of such ‘schools’ have amounted to the liquidation of painting?” Faced with this liquidation of painting and with many other liquidations, and recognizing the crumbling of all its systems of values, the advanced Western bourgeoisie is banking on total ideological decomposition, whether out of desperate reaction or out of political opportunism. In contrast, Zhdanov — with the taste characteristic of the parvenu — recognizes himself in the petit-bourgeois that opposes the decomposition of 19th-century cultural values, and can see nothing else to do than to undertake an authoritarian restoration of those values. He is unrealistic enough to believe that short-lived local political circumstances will give him the power to evade the general problems of this era, if only he can force people to return to the study of superseded problems after having repressed all the conclusions that history has previously drawn from those problems.
The form (and even some aspects of the content) of this Socialist Realism is not very different from the traditional propaganda of religious organizations, particularly of Catholicism. By means of an invariable propaganda, Catholicism defends a unitary ideological structure that it alone, among all the forces of the past, still possesses. But at the same time, in a parallel operation designed to recapture the increasingly numerous sectors that are escaping its influence, the Catholic Church is attempting to take over modern cultural forms, particularly those representing complicated theoretical nullity (“spontaneous” painting, for example). The Catholic reactionaries have the advantage over other bourgeois tendencies of being able to rely on a permanent hierarchy of values; this inalterable foundation enables them all the more freely to push decomposition to the extreme in whatever discipline they engage in.
The crisis of modern culture has led to total ideological decomposition. Nothing new can be built on these ruins. Critical thought itself becomes impossible as each judgment clashes with others and each person invokes fragments of outmoded systems or follows merely personal inclinations.
This decomposition can be seen everywhere. It is no longer a matter of noting the increasingly massive use of commercial publicity to influence judgments about cultural creation. We have arrived at a stage of ideological absence in which advertising has become the only active factor, overriding any preexisting critical judgment or transforming such judgment into a mere conditioned reflex. The complex operation of sales techniques has reached the point of surprising even the ad professionals by automatically creating pseudosubjects of cultural debate. This is the sociological significance of the Françoise Sagan phenomenon in France over the last three years, an experience whose repercussions have even penetrated beyond the cultural zone centered on Paris by provoking some interest in the workers states. The professional judges of culture, seeing such a phenomenon as an unpredictable effect of mechanisms with which they are unfamiliar, tend to attribute it to mere crude mass-media publicity. But their profession nevertheless obliges them to come up with some bogus critiques of these bogus works. (Moreover, a work whose interest is inexplicable constitutes the richest subject for bourgeois confusionist criticism.) They naturally remain unaware of the fact that the intellectual mechanisms of criticism had already escaped them long before the external mechanisms arrived to exploit this void. They avoid facing the fact that Sagan is simply the ridiculous flip side of the change of means of expression into means of action on everyday life. This process of supersession has caused the life of the author to become increasingly more important than her work. As the period of important expressions arrives at its ultimate reduction, nothing of any possible importance remains except the personality of the author, who in turn is no longer capable of possessing any notable quality beyond her age, or some fashionable vice, or some picturesque old craft.
The opposition that must now be united against this ideological decomposition must not get caught up in criticizing the buffooneries appearing in outmoded forms like poems or novels. We have to criticize activities that are important for the future, activities that we need to make use of. One of the most serious signs of the present ideological decomposition is that the functionalist theory of architecture is now based on the most reactionary conceptions of society and morality. That is, the temporarily and partially valid contributions of the original Bauhaus or of the school of Le Corbusier have been distorted so as to reinforce an excessively backward notion of life and of the framework of life.
Everything indicates, however, that since 1956 we have been entering a new phase of the struggle, and that an upheaval of revolutionary forces, attacking the most appalling obstacles on all fronts, is beginning to change the conditions of the preceding period. Socialist Realism is beginning to decline in the countries of the anti-capitalist camp, along with the reactionary Stalinism that produced it, while in the West the Sagan culture is marking a depth of bourgeois decadence beyond which it is probably impossible to go and there seems to be an increasing awareness of the exhaustion of the cultural expedients that have served since the end of World War II. In this context, the avant-garde minority may be able to rediscover a positive value.

ATTENTION: THIS POST CONTAINS SUBTLE ADVERTISING THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE NOTICED WITHOUT THIS DISCLAIMER, ACTUALLY, IT IS PROBABLY PRETTY OBVIOUS ON IT’S OWN, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF TRANSPARENCY HERE IS THIS GIANT MESSAGE IN CAPITAL LETTERS PRECEDING WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ, ASSUMING I HAVEN’T DRIVEN YOU AWAY AT THIS POINT, WHICH I WOULD NOT TAKE OFFENSE TO, BY THE WAY, BECAUSE I GENERALLY HATE BEING ADVERTISED TO WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS FOR WHEN IT IS DONE IN AN ENTERTAINING OR OTHERWISE MEANINGFUL WAY, WHICH IS WHAT I HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH HEREIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ THIS POST WITHOUT PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE ADVERTISEMENT WITHIN, YOU ARE SHIT OUT OF LUCK AT THIS POINT LOL.
Holy shit, I’m glad we got that out of the way, because half of me thinks it’s necessary to write something like that because I don’t want to seem like a slimy capitalist swine or whatever, but the other part of me is just like fuck it, everybody needs money to live, it’s not like I’m out here buying Ferraris or something, although obviously I would be if I had that kind of money, but who wouldn’t? Except for people who don’t want a Ferrari, which I would imagine is a large portion of people. Actually, come to think about it, even if I had the kind of money required to purchase a Ferrari, on top of the additional money I’d need to support my Ferrari owning self, which would probably be a lot, because if I’m buying a frickin’ Ferrari I’d imagine I have pretty excessive standards of living to begin with which would get expensive, I would probably do some research into what kind of sports car I’d want to spend my cash on in the first place. Nothing against Ferraris, but I don’t really know anything about expensive cars except that they’re fast and look cool. No idea which one offers the most bang for your buck or whatever, so I’d probably end up looking into that before I go out just spending my ridiculous fortune willy nilly.
And that, dear reader, brings me to the main point of this post: Incest.
I’m a huge fan of incest because I don’t like the hassle of candles. Candles require a lot of commitment. Unless you’re buying those tiny ones which typically look like shit just sitting there on their own unless you have one of those candle holder apparatuses, you’re going to be stuck with a large candle that probably comes inside(lol) it’s own glass jar or whatever that you’re going to end up throwing away because seriously, what are you going to reuse a small oddly shaped jar with no lid for? It’s not like most people make their own candles, I’m sure some do but they are NOT the majority and should never think of themselves as such. Also, the problem with big candles is they might not smell the same when they burn as they do when you sniff them at the store. I can’t tell you how many times (never) I’ve bought a candle and ended up never using it because it smelled like ass whenever it was burning even though in the store it smelled great. What is the solution, you ask, to shitty candles and all the bullshit involved with them?
Incest.
Incest comes in tiny little sticks or sometimes those little cone things that you place on or inside of a burner and then you light those lil fuckers up. I’ll be honest, I’ve never really fucked with the cone ones because change is scary to me and I’ve always been familiar with the sticks ever since before I can even remember, I didn’t learn about the cone ones until well into my teens. So what I tend to do is buy a variety pack of incest (like this one) and try out all the different flavors because for one, it’s pretty cheap, and for two, you get way more flavors for the price than you would if you bought shitty candles. Obviously incest doesn’t burn as long as most candles, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Candles you have to worry about blowing out, lest an errant cat or something burns your house down, or if you don’t have a cat or indoor pets in general, possibly a squirrel or raccoon who found his/her way into your attic and ended up falling through an improperly fastened air duct or something and then FREAKING OUT because it’s now trapped in the foreign and terrifying alien environment that is your house, now in a panicked frenzy, shitting everywhere and destroying your property, and your dumbass left a candle burning and in a fit of jealousy over the fact that you can create fire and he can’t, this now trapped and angry opossum or whatever goes straight for the candle and knocks it onto your 100% hemp fiber rug which blazes into a massive dank af  inferno and burns your whole house down. Also, even though the intruding armadillo or something is a pest and a total bitch for burning your house down, in this hypothetical scenario he or she escapes unharmed from the burning building because to be honest, the whole thing was an accident, and he has no real understanding of the value of someone’s home and possessions anyway, he’s just a fox, and he doesn’t deserve to burn to death for one small mistake which really can be blamed on you, the irresponsible homeowner, for leaving the candle burning in the first place and having an improperly enclosed attic space and sketchy air vents.
My point is this: incest is superior to candles in just about every way you can think of, except for one.
THE FUCKING SHIT GETS EVERYWHERE.
Like, the ashes? You know? The stick burns down slowly producing a great number of heavenly scents you can choose from, but while it does, it turns to ash which falls, in theory, onto the incest burner/holder thing that you’re using unless you’re one of those people who doesn’t use one at all. I’ve seen some people just lay the burning part of the stick over a sink and place a counterweight on the other end so that all the ashes fall into the sink and can just be washed away later. That’s a pretty frugal way to burn incest and I definitely recommend it if you can’t afford a proper holder, but for those of you who can afford a proper holder/burner, or who want to burn it somewhere besides a room with access to a sink, you’re who this entire post is intended for.
Look at this. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? It’s a pretty flower with included symbolism of peace and harmony at no extra charge and it’s a wonderful way to create lovely smells in your home by being the only incest burner you’ll ever need, right?
WRONG.
SHIT. SUCKS.
I bought this thing. It’s terrible. First of all, the hole isn’t tight enough to keep the stick standing up straight, which is exactly what she said, and causes it to lean over and drip ashes on the table or window sill or wherever you’re choosing to burn it at. There isn’t really a second of all except that the pictures give you no sense of scale, It’s much smaller than it looks, and entirely incapable of catching the falling ash, even if you can manage to prop up the stick completely straight. So no matter what you’re going to have to clean up ashes from wherever this thing sits, which is incredibly annoying because ashes are very unstable (same) and turn to an extremely fine dust as soon as you touch them or even breathe on them, (same) creating an even bigger mess for you to have to deal with. It’s awful. Don’t ever buy this incest holder unless you have really short incest sticks or you break the long ones in half, which is annoying and a mess in itself and something that nobody should ever have to deal with.
THIS is the incest holder you want. It’s perfect in every way. I’ve got it sitting right next to me in the window sill as we speak (Read? Communicate textually?) and I think I’m going to burn some right now. Ahhhh, yes. The sweet smell of incest. I’m not sure which flavor I picked just now but it’s the yellow box from that variety pack from earlier and it smells great, very warm and welcoming type smell. Anyways, more about the holder: It’s solid wood, plenty big enough to catch ALL of the ashes no matter what, and it even has two holes, one on each end, so you can burn two sticks at once. I really love this thing. I wasted plenty of money on trying to find the perfect incest burner and at first I thought this one was way too expensive to bother with, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Honestly, I plan to buy a couple more for other rooms of the house and even as gifts to people because it’s everything I’ve ever wanted.
So yeah, if you’re into incest, or if you’ve never tried it but would like to, check that thing out, and also that variety pack I mentioned, it’ll give you an idea of which smellz you like the most. I hope this has been helpful, and if it has, or even if you just like this blog or my personality or whatever and want to support me, the amazon links here are the affiliate ones which I still am not entirely for sure how they work exactly but apparently I get a percentage of whatever you buy on amazon for like 24 hours after you click them. So even if you don’t want to buy incest, if you were planning on buying something from amazon anyway, click through one of those links first and send some cash flow my way. I’ll use it to buy and review more products that you might like. Or don’t support me, cause I’m gonna do this shit anyway whether I have your help or not. Not trying to be rude, just saying. Regardless, I do appreciate you reading this, and I wish you the best in your life and travels and whatever else you do with your time. See you next time.
