Calls for Action, Call Your Reps: 2/26/24

This is USA-specific, as that is the place I live and know.

Find your elected officials.

As usual, most of my information on what bills are on the floor comes from GovTrack. I am including some suggested listening/reading (you can find text versions if you google the title and 'transcript') at the bottom of the post. I am also including a current event that is likely to be a very powerful argument, with the right politicians. The event is prefaced with a red warning tag, and followed by event-specific verbiage.

Suggested verbiage and strategies for calling your elected officials.

GovTrack has said that there are still no votes scheduled, in this blog post from Friday: What's Next for Congress? (Feb 23, 2024)

In practice, that appears to mean that they are arguing over the budget to avoid yet another government shutdown. Given that the delays to the budget so far have been tied directly to the Israel/Ukraine/Taiwan military funding and Southern border.

Use this time to call their offices and tell them to vote the way you want them to.

The most immediate and pressing issue at this moment is the famine in Gaza. Widely reported today is that a two-month-old boy recently died of starvation, and the World Health Organization is declaring that it has become famine and a mass starvation event, no longer just a threat of one.

At this time, the three greatest factors in that famine are:

Israeli bombardment (destruction of existing food stores and farming land)

Israeli blockades of the Egyptian border into Gaza, preventing aid trucks from places like the US from reaching people

The cessation of funding to UNRWA, which has been the lifeline to Palestinian civilians for decades, and is currently the best and possibly only chance to save the one and a half million dying civilians

This information is being reported by the WHO, UNRWA itself, UNICEF, and more, along with journalists that are in Gaza at this time.

The other issue, more domestically, is the rising tide of concern for US Reproductive Rights stemming from the IVF ruling in Alabama.

Both House and Senate:

Reinstate funding for UNRWA. While the claims made by Israel that employees of the relief agency were involved in Oct. 7th are troubling, THEY are not well supported, and western officials did not do their duty in investigating the claims before cutting funding. This arm of the UN is currently providing food, water, shelter, and medical care to the 2.3 million displaced peoples of Gaza. It is especially disturbing and concerning that the many children of Gaza, who are already suffering due to this conflict, are now having this support revoked. Many sources are also claiming that the evidence is flimsy at best.

Urge both Senate and House to refrain from funding Israel, or to at least put some strings on it. The IDF cannot be given funding without some regulations on what they can do with it. They have proven that they are unwilling to take steps to protect civilians.

Sanctions must also be placed on Israel for its continued impediment of aid intended for Gazans, including aid from the US.

Urge for the US to stop vetoing ceasefire demands in the UN. No, the suggested replacement written by the US is not an excuse.

Not directly related to Gaza: It looks like they’re gearing up for another push at KOSA. The canned email responses I’m getting are really proud of being in support of KOSA, which is… bad. It is also bad for people outside the US, including Palestine, apparently. VOTE NAY.

Not related to Gaza: Alabama's recent court decision has put IVF services in danger in the state, with multiple fertility clinics halting all related services for any pregnancy that is not yet in progress; there were implantation appointments for last week that were canceled with no knowledge of when they might be greenlit. Push for full spectrum reproductive rights protection (fertility services, family planning, birth control, abortion, and more), and if you have a pro-lifer as your elected official, cite the Alabama ruling as a cause for concern of how the lack of codified reproductive rights protection can impact even those who do want children.

FOR THE SENATE: Urge your senator to put their support behind Bernie Sanders and his motion to restrict funding to Israel until a humanitarian review of the IDF’s actions in Gaza has been completed. Cite it as Senate Resolution 504 if your Senator is right-wing enough to react negatively to the mention of Sanders by name. NOTE: This resolution was TABLED by the Senate on 1/16, but it is being brought back in as conditions continue to escalate.

Passed in the House recently, so bother your senators about it, is H.R. 3016: IGO Anti-Boycott Act. Vote Nay. This appears to be intended to force US companies to do business with US allies instead of participating in boycotts. This appears, to me, to be an attack on movements like BDS. To Dem Reps, argue that this refuses the right of peaceful protest to US citizens. To Republican Reps, argue that this is a dangerous government overreach and that it is not the right of the government to force US citizens to purchase products and materials from specific foreign partners.

FOR THE HOUSE: Recommend that they support House Resolution 786, introduced by Rep. Cori Bush, Calling for an immediate deescalation and cease-fire in Israel and occupied Palestine. ALTERNATELY: Urge your representative to put their support behind Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s petition for the US government to recognize the IDF’s actions in Gaza as ethnic cleansing and forced displacement, and put a stop to it.

Alright, now the current big news story.

Warning: Self-harm, public suicide.

I will preface this with an explanation of a recent event.

The big American news of this week that is being talked about on all political news sources, from BBC to NPR to Al Jazeera, is the self-immolation in DC. A US Air Force service member walked to the Israeli embassy in Washingon DC, set up a Twitch Stream, and stated that he refused to be party to the genocide being committed with the support of his country's government. He then doused himself in a flammable liquid, set himself on fire, and shouted 'Free Palestine' on repeat until the fire grew too great for him to do anything but scream in pain. The man was rushed away to a hospital, but has apparently died since. Twitch has understandably removed the video for ToS violations, but the video has been saved and reshared to other sites since.

To be clear, the airman, a 25yo named Aaron Bushnell, explicitly stated that this was an act of extreme protest, but not as extreme as the current lives of Palestinians in Gaza. Please do not allow people to convince you this was just a random act of mental illness. It was tragic, yes, but this very public, recorded, in-uniform, motive-declared suicide was by all appearances a calculated choice based on centuries of precedent.

If your senator or representative claims to be pro-military, bring this up. Even if they don't, bring it up.

"A service member, someone who presumably has access to more information on what is happening 'on the ground' than the average citizen, someone who has proven their dedication to America, is dying in agony to prove a point: that Israel's actions cannot be condoned, cannot be justified, and most certainly cannot be supported with fourteen billion in military aid."

The above is one possible verbiage you can use when you call.

Today, I would also recommend listening to NPR's Politics Podcast as the episode contains some good information on The Michigan Problem, and the Democracy Now podcast, which has some good interviews on the confirmed famine going on in Gaza. I will note that there are some claims being made in the latter about the US government, including comments by Biden himself, using law enforcement and college administrations to punish pro-Palestine groups, from Students for Justice in Palestine to even Jewish Voice for Peace (notable since one of the major arguments for these actions is that anti-zionists are antisemitic). I am saying 'claims being made' as I have not had time to corroborate this with other news sources, and the other casts I listen to have not mentioned it.

Alternately, I would also suggest that you send any spare money to PCRF (Palestine Children's Relief Fund), UNRWA, or Save the Children Sudan, which has been undergoing an incredibly deadly civil war for a year or so now, but that the US has significantly less involvement in on a bureaucratic level, so IDK what any of us in the US can do to help in that regard. But many of us do have money! So there's that.

WARNING, THERES A PRETTY BAD DISCORD SCAM GOING AROUND!

⚠️IMPORTANT!!⚠️

I've gotten a message from this kind of scam and even had a friend fall victim to it.

someone will message you in DMs (typically a friend who fell victim to the same scam and got their account compromised by these people) The scammer will tell you that they wanted to make a friend on a site (typically a gaming one) but got hacked by pressing a link, they will say the person that hacked them had the same name as your account here on Discord.

They will say that they were mad and got people to mass report your account but realized it was a misunderstanding and reached out to help you. They will then send a FAKE YET CONVINCING screenshot showing that you only have a short amount of time to make an appeal as well as providing you the name of a mod you can message to fix the problem.

However, if you message the mod and give them the personal account info they ask for (seemingly to help with the situation) they will use this info to log into your discord, change the account's email and password, then kick you out. They will then use YOUR account to do same thing to your friends. Sending them the same exact message (albeit with changed names) they sent you.

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM, I thankfully had a friend in a server I'm in who noticed something was fishy with the messages when I fearfully shared the DMs for advice on what to do. They knocked some sense into me and made me realize the suspicious nature of these messages.

Google fired the 28 employees who protested against the Alphabet division’s $1.2 billion cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government, just days after they staged sit-ins at offices around the nation.

The protests took place Tuesday at offices in New York City, Sunnyvale, California, Seattle and elsewhere. The group in Sunnyvale occupied the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian and livestreamed the sit-in on a Twitch channel called “notech4apartheid.”

On the stream, they said New York staffers had been arrested after they sat down in a common space in the office and opened up a banner reading, “No Tech for Genocide.” They were released several hours later.

The protest focused on Project Nimbus, the cloud computing service Google provides Israeli government agencies in partnership with Amazon as part of a contract worth $1.2 billion.

The group also has a website, NoTechForAparteid.com, which encourages visitors to petition both Google and Amazon to stop doing business with Israel.

While the contract has long been an issue for some of Google’s staffers, the tensions surrounding it have escalated since the start of Israel-Gaza war in October, The New York Times reported.

Google Vice President for Global Security Chris Rackow said in a company-wide email that the staffers were let go after “they took over our office spaces, defaced our property and physically impeded the work of other Googlers..”

“Their behavior was unacceptable, extremely disruptive, and made co-workers feel threatened,” said the memo, which CNBC posted.

Rackow said the 28 were fired after an investigation. “We will continue to investigate and take action as needed,” he wrote. “Behavior like this has no place in our workplace and we will not tolerate it.”

“The overwhelming majority of our employees do the right thing,” Rackow continued. “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again.”

No Tech for Apartheid said in a statement that the comapny “indiscriminately” engaged in “wholesale firings,” including of some workers who did not take part in the protests “through a dragnet of in-office surveillance” and denied damaging property or threatening colleagues.

“This flagrant act of retaliation is a clear indication that Google values its $1.2 billion contract with the genocidal Israeli government and military more than its own workers,” the statement said. “In the three years that we have been organizing against Project Nimbus, we have yet to hear from a single executive about our concerns. Google workers have the right to peacefully protest about terms and conditions of our labor. These firings were clearly retaliatory.”

“These mass, illegal firings will not stop us,” the statement continued. “On the contrary, they only serve as further fuel for the growth of this movement. Make no mistake, we will continue organizing until the company drops Project Nimbus and stops powering this genocide.”

I’ve said this before on Twitter but I want to expand on this a bit more: I hate substack and other “newsletter” things (and don’t get me started on Medium). There’s great content being published that way, but the technology base just drives me nuts.

Because these things are actually just blogs! Not in the Tumblr sense, but classic blogs. They live on the web, they’re often not time sensitive, and they even have an RSS feed, not that you’d know. It’s under /feed for Substack, and found via the <link rel="alternate" tag that web browsers used to support. Some RSS readers like Reeder can make use of that.

Of course RSS is kind of dead. Web browsers dropped their support, the biggest reader, Google Reader, was shut down years ago. You can still use RSS to keep up with your favorite websites, comics, blogs and Substack “newsletters”, and in fact I recommend doing so, it’s great! But most people don’t.

And so the whole newsletter thing is really just a workaround for RSS’s demise. Instead of RSS, we deliver the updates via the only remaining widespread multi-party unrestricted system there is: Fucking email. Like it’s 1971. And of course the need to send these emails creates the need to have someone with their own mail server who knows how to do mass mailings without being treated as spam, so you need to have Substack as the central service provider in the middle. We managed to centralize blogging, of all things. The form of internet communication that should have the lowest barriers to doing it yourself with only Notepad as a tool. Drives me nuts.

POSTING INSTRUCTIONS

Hello, Stabbers! So the time has come to display all your hard work to the innernets.

You are responsible for two things:

1) Post your work on your scheduled posting date. Not before the date, not after the date; ON your posting date, any time within those 24 hours preceding 11:59PM ET. You should have received an email advising of your posting date.

Fic should be posted to AO3 and included in the 2Stab2Fest collection (https://archiveofourown.org/collections/StabFest2023.) AO3 posts can be drafted ahead of time, but you will need to manually press the "Post Work" button on your posting date.

The AO3 post may contain a link to the art, or embed the art within the body of the text; discuss with your artist to see if they're okay with either option.

Art can be posted to whichever site the artist chooses; we recommend Tumblr, as the StabFest has its primary presence on that platform. For the raw image hosting, you might want to use a different service, as Tumblr can be flaky with image URLs. (If that sounds Greek to you, don't sweat it. Post where you're comfy.) Tumblr posts can be scheduled in advance to post at a specific date and time.

Art posts must include a link to the author's fic and indicate that the art was done as part of StabFest.

Art embedded on AO3 and art hosted on Tumblr and Twitter MUST have Alt ID. This is an accessibility issue for screenreaders and people on crappy wifi. We've all been there. Please see below for resources on how to do this.

2) Complete the Posting Form. You will receive an email the day before your posting date with a link to the airtable form. In the form, you will provide the links to your fic and art posts, and advise Title, Summary, Tags, what stickers you're eligible for, etc. This information will be used to create a promotion post on the official StabFest Tumblr and Twitter.

This is also where you will provide a promotional banner, if your team has one; this is optional, but it's nice to mix it up from the default. See below for information on banner requirements. You will need to proved a text alt ID for the banner as well.

Submit the posting form AFTER YOUR LINKS ARE LIVE. The mods will post the promo shortly after the form is received. (The posting form is also used to collect information for STABFEST WRAPPED. Answering those questions is optional, but very helpful to the mods. Please.)

Banners

Banners are a fun but optional piece of promo art for your team. If you provide a banner when filling out the posting form, the mods will use that image instead of the default image heading for the official promo post.

Banners must include:

Artist name

Author name

Title of Fic

Name of fest OR an official logo. (Or both!)

There are a few options for the fest name: 2Stab2Fest, StabFest2023, DeanCas StabFest, DeanCas* StabFest.

This year for Pride Month, I am putting together a website filled with resources and helpful information under a domain name that could be used to do harm to us. The problem is that there is a lot of stuff to look through and I only have so much time in a day, which is why I am asking for some help to crowdsource this information from anyone willing to participate during this early phase!
