thinking about how much sumire's wish says about both her and maruki's reality. how even once maruki has the power to do it he doesn't bring back kasumi. sumire doesn't want her sister back, she wants to be her sister. sumire doesn't just hate herself--she's jealous of kasumi. she resents her for being the perfect elder sister when sumire consistently failed at being the perfect younger sister. sumire idealizes and hates kasumi all at once. the only way she can be happy is if she becomes her. if kasumi simply came back to life sumire wouldn't be happy, because that would return her to the self loathing hell sumire nearly killed herself to escape. maruki can't bring kasumi back if he wants sumire to be happy, even if bringing her back would create a more just world. maruki's priorities are always for the people already alive. akechi isn't brought back because he wants to live--far from it. he's brought back purely because that's what joker wants. same for wakaba and okumura--they aren't given any agency whatsoever in maruki's reality. their existences are wholly for the phantom thieves. notice again how yusuke's mother isn't brought back--madarame is simply a good sensei. maruki isn't doing what is the "right" or "just" thing by reversing death. he's picking and choosing whose wishes to fulfill and how according to their whims.

but the thing is, maruki only pretends to respect the wishes of the people in his reality. he wants there to be a pretense of choosing, hence why he's so desperate to get joker to agree to his reality, but the truth is that maruki's will always prevails regardless of whether anyone else is okay with it. if its what he decides is best he will override the will of his victims, as seen in his palace when he forces people to give up their dreams for another if he thinks it is what will make them happy. maruki is capable of changing sumire's cognition so that she'll be happy with a living kasumi, but he chooses not to, because his goal isn't to erase every injustice in the world. it is to make everyone happy in the way he deems necessary whether they like it or not. he doesn't care if akechi would rather be dead than his puppet. he only cares if joker, the boy he's personally grown attached to as someone who helped him with his research, got his wish. he doesn't care if kasumi is still doomed to a tragic early death so long as sumire, the living girl he's personally grown attached to as his patient, is personally happy.

- Nyx, a Star Eater, took damage when she collided with Earth (Book: Persona 3 Club). The debris created the Moon and, while Nyx' psyche was trapped on Earth, her body was enclosed in the Moon.

- Fragments from Nyx' body, called Plumes of Dusk, fell on Earth (Book: Persona 3 Club).

- Nyx began the long process of healing her physical body.

of the three major betrayals they went through, maruki's hurt akira the most by far. he had been expecting akechi's since the day they met, and he was never close to igor on a personal level, but maruki. maruki.

akira was incredibly attached to maruki from the very beginning. since arriving in tokyo, every single adult joker encountered treated them like shit, made them out to be worthless burden, a problem with nothing important to say. and then came dr. maruki who was so incredibly kind, who was forthright in his intentions and didn't try to force them to open up but still made it clear that he cared, that he was listening.

and akira latched onto that. he went to see maruki wherever he could, enthusiastically helped him with his research, at several points seriously considered trying to give akechi maruki's number because he thought maruki was great and trusted him enough to think he could give akechi the help he obviously desperately needed. maruki mentioned that akira might make a good counselor himself and akira thought, yes, he would, and he wanted that. he wanted to help and support people the way maruki did.

so the fucking shock of the third semester, of realizing the one adult he unconditionally trusted from the very beginning, who he looked up to, was using what he and his friends had confided in him against them. even after akira told him that being betrayed was what would hurt him the most. (but maruki wouldn't consider it a betrayal, would he?)

akira didn't really process what he was feeling during third semester, just kind of went into business mode and focused on the infiltration, supporting sumire, and trying and failing to hang out with akechi as much as he could (he figured out that akechi had probably been brought back by maruki but didn't think akechi knew). but in the aftermath, after he returned home and was separated from the rest of the thieves, he realized... he had been groomed. maruki had come into his life at an extremely vulnerable time and used his position as akira's counselor to gain his trust, manipulate him into helping with his plans, and condition him to subconsciously wish for maruki's reality when the time came. he was supposed to accept it, too, but his respect for akechi's autonomy kept him from ever considering that.

and what's more, he realized maruki probably didn't do any of that on purpose. because he is genuinely the kind and caring person akira got to know. he genuinely thought he was helping all of them, especially akira. akira had agreed with maruki in their sessions, it had sounded nice on paper, so grappling with why maruki's reality was wrong forced him to examine his morals, the foundation of his very being, in a more complicated light. justice is helping people. but sometimes helping people can be wrong, or rather, you don't have the right to decide how they should be helped.

akira's feelings about maruki are complicated and something he's going to be processing for a long time, but the experience left deep scars. it all but ruined his ability to trust people, especially adults. he promised sae he would leave it to them, but how is he supposed to honor that when he's seen the depths of their cruelty throughout the year, when he knows how easy it is for them to take advantage of people, when even the adults who seem friendly, who genuinely have his best interests at heart, still might use him?

and that's what scares him the most. that even kindness can be distorted, even someone who shares his morals can be capable of such great evil. if he hadn't been so close to akechi, hadn't valued his autonomy so much, hadn't seen and heard him oppose the false reality so strongly, or if maruki had approached him first and explained it to him - would akira have accepted it?

he doesn't know, and that terrifies him.

So I just realized something: Sumi was completely suicidal/on the verge of killing herself before Maruki put the filter on her. And by that I mean (from what I read and learned), she was reaching severe levels of that before her family had her see Maruki.

So that would add another layer of why she was grateful to him despite everything tbh. Like it wasn't an ethical or perfect solution, but it did give her more time even if she didn't realize it at the time. She found new friends and a proper support system, even when the filter wore off and she showed her more selfish side (still wish that was addressed more but oh well). I can fully understand people's issues with it but that aspect tends to get overlooked a lot methinks.

As a mutual puts it, Maruki was put in a, "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation so this whole choice really isn't an easy one (unless he did it unconsciously?). Like it's not exactly good to just slap on a metaphorical band-aid and consider things fine (for now) but at the same time... What else can you do? Especially when apparently every other method failed to help her (Now I'm wondering if the failed attempts to help her that were done prior to meeting Maruki ended with her being dismissed as a "hopeless case" which worsened her mental state further which can sadly happen in some irl cases and especially considering how apparently shitty Japan is regarding mental health).

Add onto the fact that he was one of the few people besides her family, coach, and later the PTs that gave a damn about her and she understood where he's coming from in return, her wanting to help him and is grateful to him despite the complicated circumstances and his actions make sense.

It's not Sumi forgiving an "abuser" but rather her acknowledging the good it did ultimately give her, she just didn't need it anymore and Maruki needed to stop running as well (which he ultimately does).

It's another grey area and the filter was no exception. It was well-intentioned but also not good in the long run for obvious reasons.

Joker had no choice but to team up with Goro in the beginning of the 3rd semester to stop Maruki / the palace ruler. The game doesn't allow any more options until you progress a little further. Even in this new reality, Joker only has the illusion of free choice. It's still stripped away from him, just like with Yaldabaoth / False Igor. Goro even admits to be using Joker for his own gain right to the other's faces, as the saying goes, 'The enemy ( Akira for interfering with the new reality ) of my enemy ( Maruki ) is my friend / ally'. They put up their differences to tackle a greater threat. That's why Maruki tells Joker and Goro that they aren't quite hated by each other. It's because they have a truce at the moment.
