I am most of the way through What We Do In The Shadows, and at some point during S3 I was just like oh ok I get why you all have been going extra feral for Guillermo here on the Stanning Martin Blackwood Website.
Out of the deeply traumatized, morally grey, mostly bisexual but no is fully cishet group, Tumblr will love the disaster gay who
(1) preferentially relies on de-escalating situations and letting people underestimate him, but is very much down with murder otherwise
(2) could probably take over the world and run it from the shadows if a third of his brain space weren't taken up by an ill-advised crush on his boss who mostly treats him badly
(3) is constantly setting himself on fire to keep others warm
(4) is kinda going down a dark path but it's also coming with this huge improvement in self esteem and confidence so good for him
Anyway I have gotten had again by assuming tumblr going feral was mostly fanon, only to find out they're canonically Like That, good times

The Tome of the Unknown
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/vIoxF7z by green_tea_and_honey Jonathan Sims has found himself somewhere utterly otherworldly in the wake of disaster, alone and almost empty-handed. The place he's found himself in is one of near-casual wonder, an endless harvest, and filled with strange song. A strange song that sings of a book called the Tome of the Unknown, which contains everything that has ever been forgotten. A strange song that promises that if Jon can find it, he can remember a way back home. But every song can turn sour. Sir Fitzroy Maplecourt and Martin King Blackwood
Oh boy I am DELIGHTED to get TAZ Grad stuff
FITZROY MAPLECOURT
Sexuality Headcanon:  Gay ace.  I’m just slapping ace headcanons on characters left and right!  I am drunk on power!!
Gender Headcanon:  Hmm I don’t have anything for this yet!  I am gonna let it develop organically.
A ship I have with said character:  I think there’s a lot of potential with Fitzroy/Argo.  That “not sure if I trust him but I would die for him” energy is incredible and I’m impressed at naturally it came about.
A BROTP I have with said character:  Ranier!  I am a huge sucker for m/f friendships, and they’re just so fun and cute.  I love him seeing her as his Cool Reliable Friend but also being terrified and alarmed by her little animal skeleton helpers.
A NOTP I have with said character:  None that I can think of!  I prefer him and Ranier as platonic, but it’s definitely not NOTP level.
A random headcanon:  Oh boy I haven’t gotten into the habit of headcanons for TAZ shows.  Gonna let this one develop organically too!
General Opinion over said character:  I am ABSURDLY attached to this gaudy disaster.  Griffin may be my favorite McElroy DM, but I’m so so glad he’s a player in a campaign so we can see that angle of creativity.  I’m also very excited to see where the Chaos storyline goes--especially since it’s giving me so many Archivist vibes already.
Martin answered here!

Chapters: 1/? Fandom: The Magnus Archives (Podcast), The Mechanisms (Band) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Martin Blackwood/Jonathan Sims Characters: Martin Blackwood, Jonathan Sims, Sasha James, Tim Stoker (The Magnus Archives) Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Alternate Universe - Different First Meeting, kind of, Crush at First Sight, The Mechs are Jon’s college band, Martin is a fan, romcom shenanigans, First Kiss, canon-typical worms, Canon-atypical happiness, Canon Asexual Character, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, I’m Bad At Tagging, gay disasters all of them, jarchivist sims is jonny d'ville, martin is in love with both of them Summary:
Martin had never been the type of person to listen to popular music. It made him feel ridiculously pretentious to say it, but it all felt so superficial. All those songs about love and sex and breakups felt so… detached. Emotionless even as the singer was supposedly pouring their heart out.
He supposed this was part of the reason he liked poetry. Good poetry, where the feelings are so strong you can almost taste them, where you can hear the sounds pinned down by ink on the paper. Martin had been trying his hand at writing his own stuff recently, but it was never much good. It always felt so cliche.
This is probably just a long way of saying that he liked a good story, and definitely a roundabout way of explaining why he enjoyed listening to the Mechanisms so much.
(or to put it another way, Jarchivist Sims is Jonny D'Ville and Martin doesn’t realise. Gay shenanigans occur)
(y'all I wrote the first chapter of my mechs!jon fic please go read it I need validation)

Book Recs for Magnus Archives Fans
I was just rambling in tags the other day about how my avatarsona was "the Archivist, but a public librarian: Oh, you like dirt?? Let me tell you all the dirt stories I have!!!!" so, uh, here I am I guess.
I'm gonna spare you all the M.R. James and Algernon Blackwood and House of Leaves and Blindsight; you know all that already. These are my horror backlist recs.
The Bone Key by Sarah Monette Y'all. Y'ALL. Kyle Murchison Booth was absolutely the Archivist before Gertrude. He was poached from the Parrington by the Usher Foundation and the Eye glommed onto him at once, because the Eye loves disaster queers who can't people right (and also Gertrude). This I believe to be true, and so will you.
Kyle Murchison Booth is an archivist at the Parrington Museum, which is somewhere in New England, sometime in the early twentieth century. He also has a lifelong entanglement with the supernatural which is almost entirely not his fault, and he would very much like it to stop, but he also feels responsible and he can't just let evil mirrors and cursed necklaces and possessed dressing gowns randomly eat people who have no idea what's happening. Even if it means he's going to suffer for it.
(This collection doesn't contain all of the Booth stories, so here I am going to link to "White Charles", which happens to be my very favorite Booth story.)
For you if your favorite part is: honestly everything about MAG, from the modern sensibilities about early twentieth-century-horror, truly eerie ghost stories, to suffering eldritch librarians (thanks to whoever tagged my most recent fic with that you're so valid), monsterfucking and soft gay pining. No happy endings here, sorry.
Bedfellow by Jeremy C. Shipp You may or may not have heard that Macmillan-Tor is launching a horror imprint, and I don't know how long it's been since a major publishing house has had a horror imprint, but I am EXCITE. This book is part of the trend that's the reason why: Tor.com has been publishing these kickass novellas for a couple years now, and their horror books are top notch.
One night a stranger knocks on a family's living room window and asks to be invited in. They ask him to stay the night. He's an old friend, after all, he needs a place to stay. You can't kick out your twin brother when he's just gotten divorced, no matter how much Gatorade he spills on your two-year-old hardwood floors.
For you if your favorite part is: the Stranger, this is all Stranger, it's terrifying and good.
Through the Woods by Emily Carroll A graphic novel, some of these were originally posted as webcomics (have you seen His Face All Red, and if not, why not???) and the only disadvantage to having them in book form is they can't blink at you. Probably. Very folktale-ish, with all the death and violence that implies, and also the slightly eerie feeling that you know this story already, and then it turns around and slaps you.
For you if your favorite part is: looking over your shoulder when the foley gets good; Once Upon a Time in Space (I know that's not technically part of the Magnus Archives but shush)
Universal Harvester by John Darnielle I am not usually a fan of artists who jump media. Just because you can write songs doesn't mean you can write novels. Apparently writing good songs doesn't mean you can't write good novels, though, because John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats (pretty sure that's his full name at this point) wrote Universal Harvester and I love him for it.
Jeremy works at a video rental place in Nevada, Iowa (it's pronounced Nah-vey-da, and yes it’s real, I've been there, and yes, it's probably haunted). It's the 1990s, and someone's been returning their VHS tapes with something on them that isn't just the movie. Footage that includes a barn that he recognizes, just outside of town.
Fair warning: this is not the kind of mystery that gets tied up in a nice bow at the end.
For you if your favorite part is: Jon losing it with paranoia in S2, The People's Church of the Divine Host, the Lonely
The Good House by Tananarive Due If this author's name is unfamiliar to you, RUN, do not walk, to your nearest internet bookseller and purchase every single one of her books immediately, you will not regret it. She also just came out with a documentary on black horror, Horror Noire, on the Shudder streaming service. They've got a free month if you aren't a horror movie person, it'd be worth your while. This book summary sounds like it's full of tropes. It is, but Due has the cred to write them well.
Angela Toussaint hopes to salvage her suffering marriage and her troubled relationship with her teenage son with a trip to her grandmother's house, a home so beloved the locals in small-town Washington state call it "The Good House," but tragedy strikes instead. Two years later she returns and finds that the tragedy isn't over, and it's not going to stop on its own.
For you if your favorite part is: the very practical statement-givers who know what's happening to them and Will Not Put Up With This Shit, the Desolation, the Hill Top Road statements
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins Is this horror disguised as fantasy? Found family disguised as horror? Grown-up Neil Gaiman? Less grimdark George R.R. Martin? Honestly I have no fucking idea, but it's amazing. Fair warning, unlike Magnus Archives, this deserves all kinds of trigger warnings, including but not necessarily limited to: sexual assault, torture, mental manipulation, dysfunctional families, incest(?)
Father is missing, and his twelve children (though extremely talented in their own ways, and not strictly speaking children any more) are at a loss without him. But also, without him, things are starting to seem different. He might be God? They might not be human? (They were probably human once.) He might not be God but maybe one of them might be next? If any of them survive.
For you if your favorite part is: slowly turning into a monster, the relationships between entities and avatars, monsters hot (not kidding about the trigger warnings)
The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley I have to keep reminding myself that Magnus Archives isn't really folk horror, there are two separate (if related) strains of British horror here and folk horror is not the one we're on, but at the same time I really want a good creepy rural pagan cult to show up in the series, you know? Anyway.
When he was a child, our narrator used to go with his family on an Easter pilgrimage to shrine on a bleak stretch of Lancaster coastline locals called The Loney. His Catholic mother was searching for a cure for his older brother, and she was convinced if they kept going long enough she would be granted her wish. The locals, however, are not huge fans of her annual visits, and even less so when the boys become involved with the goings-on of a pair of glamorous tourists.
For you if your favorite part is: the Lukases, I didn't realize until I was writing this up that I'm picturing Moreland House in the exact place described by this book
Eutopia by David Nickle One thing I love about the historical statements in Magnus Archives is just how truly historical they are. There's almost nothing in "The Piper" that isn't historically accurate - yes, Wilfrid Owen spent several days in a trench underneath the shredded bodies of his fellow soldiers. Like. You can't make up horror worse than that. But then you add monsters and it gets good. And I'm a sucker for early-twentieth-century history, it's such a bonkers time.
It's 1911 and the new Eugenics Record Office is sending agents out to catalog the disabled, infirm, and otherwise undesirable members of society so they can figure out what to do about them. In the utopian town of Eliada, Idaho, Dr. Andrew Waggoner runs from the racism of American society and straight into the influence of Mister Juke, the most troubling patient in his new practice. (Trigger warnings for, obviously, a whole lot of ableism. Treated like the monstrousness it is, but there's a lot of it.)
For you if your favorite part is: learning history through horror, the Flesh
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay I hate male writers writing about teenage girls, so you are going to have to trust me when I say that I had to check, several times while reading this book, to make sure that Paul Tremblay is actually a dude. He's very good. This book was kind of his breakout, so if you follow horror you've read it already, but if you don't necessarily then please do not miss it. His newer ones, Disappearance at Devil's Rock (Stranger, Spiral) and The Cabin at the End of the World (Slaughter, Extinction), are also good but not as good as this, I think.
Fourteen-year-old Marjorie is having a rough time - outbursts, hallucinations, paranoia. Treatment is difficult (and expensive) and her family ambivalent; they turn to a local Catholic priest, who recommends an exorcism and, to help manage those medical bills, a production company who's interested in filming a reality TV show about the process. Fifteen years later, Marjorie's sister deconstructs the now-famous show and wrestles with her own memories of childhood. Trigger warnings for ableism on the part of many of the characters, but not the narrative.
For you if your favorite part is: the Spiral, metafictional analysis of horror tropes

Welp! Here they are! My headcanon looks for Jon “I’m A Disaster” Sims and Martin “Don’t Fuck With My Boyfriend” Blackwood...
This was just gonna be Jon, but then Martin wanted to be in too. Plus, u cant see how little my Jon is unless his giant boyfriend is there for scale,, also someone other than me needed to be gazing at Jon adoringly...
Also including some close-ups so u can see details,, and Season 1 and 2 Jon so u can see that this bitch is a MESS now...
If you liked this, tell me who you want me to draw next, bc I’m gonna try to do almost everyone in TMA eventually!
More Headcanons/Info Below:
Look close and you can see Jon’s eyes get more and more bright and abnormal and the shadows/bags/lines under them get worse and worse. In Season 1 though he’s wearing makeup too, but by Season 2 on it’s all natural darkness baybee
He’s just a weird goth that somehow got a job as an archivist, so he dresses like he thinks a librarian would but slightly more black, and he wishes he could be as cool as Gerry. He also has three earrings of different styles on both ears bc fuck you I say so. He’s still a snarky dork tho no amount of goth punk accessorizing can save his shitty personality and I love him for it
He’s also agender but gives less than no fucks bc he’s Jon so he will literally not argue with any pronoun someone uses for him. If you ask for his preferred pronoun he’d probably just give you a Look of Disdain™️ (“Don’t talk to me”) and then go back to ignoring you. Sometimes he just shows up to work in a dress, acts exactly the same as always, and no one says a word bc, like, no one in the archives is cishet anyway.
Season 2 Jon feat. some tea Martin brought, lots of fun new scars, messy even greyer hair, and an overpowering sense of paranoia.
Season 3-4 Jon has straight up got white in his hair now that’s where his stress level is. Also its just super long and messy. He only needs the glasses still bc the collective damage from dark sun bullshit and the explosion fucked em up, so they’re badly scarred like the rest of him. But when he Went Full Monster, his eyesight would have been restored to perfection and he wouldn’t have needed glasses anymore. So they were vaguely repaired bc he’s not fully blind, but they’re p much back to how they were originally (shitty), so basically nothing changed at all lol
Also I tried really hard w his handburn on the season 3-4 version so like zoom in on that shit hell yeah
I can’t draw this really but he’s autistic as fuck and you will never change my mind. He also has ADHD and he’s bi and ace and it’s faaaantastic. His autism is another reason for weird old man clothes...comfy...
He’s 5′2″ which is NOT SMALL (that’s not my height too what are you talking about) but in comparison to Martin The Giant, he’s tiny. He uses a cane to help walk bc he’s all sorts of fucked up, but he did have it before The Nonsense Began bc he has bad dyspraxia and just fucking falls down all the time bc his legs wanna be autistic all of a sudden. It only adds to his air of being an ancient fuck. Bitch is probably 30 at the MOST he’s just stressed and crabby and Autism and all that combined makes him seem like a man twice his age.
Martin in my head is just a Hobbit that hit a major growth spurt at some point and is now Massive. I don’t know where this idea came from but I’ve always had it. He’s got faint freckles. He wears Spring Colors, and the green coat is his favorite clothing item bc it reminds him of Jon’s eyes and he’s a big ol gay. He’s 6′7″ and absolutely can and WILL pick Jon up and just carry him around. Also he’s trans. I decided that as I was typing this but it’s the law now he’s trans as fuck.
I probably have more but I’ve rambled enough on here...

top 5 podcasts
already answered that one here so I’m going to very self indulgently make this a “top 5 podcast characters” list
1. Carlos the Scientist (Carlos Palmer now?), WTNV: hard kin Cecil saying “and I fell in love instantly” Perfect man with perfect hair. Read It Devours and cried a lot I love him so so much.
2. Rita, TPP: love of my fucking life. Everyone that meets her including myself is like “i’ve only had rita for 20 seconds but if anything happened to her i’d kill everyone and myself”. Litcherally the main reason Juno gets better. We stan forever.
3. Doug Eiffel, Wolf 359: loveable dumbass to a T!! I’m a HUGE fan of the “affable idiot is smarter than he lets on, people end up listening to him most of the time” archetype! PLUS he’s, like, the moral center of the show!! Goofy AND secretly self-loathing/self-destructive!! THat’s my fucking SHIT!!! ADHD Bi King!!!! god GOD when he realizes that he’s unintentionally hurt the people he loves so he uhh isolates and throws himself into a task for hours n end in the hopes that he MIGHT make something better oof that hit HARD
4. Magnus Burnsides+ Aubrey Little, TAZ: okay this is cheating because it’s 2 characters but they’re both played by Travis McElory so I’m lumping them together. What can I say I love Fictional Travis Self Inserts. I mean they’re not wholly self inserts but he puts a LOT of himself into his PCs and I’m love them both so much!!!! I sobbed like you would not BELIEVE at magnus’s ending. Magnus and Aubrey are both made of LOVE and LIGHT and POOR IMPULSE CONTROL
5. Martin Blackwood, TMA: Literally you could not have more custom tailored a character for me. The pining the loneliness the competence the sass the going tf OFF on people the kindness the caretaking the voice of an angel the anxiety the continuing on in the face of fear the suicidal ideation the being a gay disaster the FIERCE LOYALTY. PEAK reliability PEAK loveable. Fits into the same archetype as like, samwise gamgee, foggy nelson, horatio. Aka the archetype that I am just comepltely fucking FERAL over.
Note: you may have noticed that all of these characters have Extremely Freiend Voices. This is not a coincidence.

It’s been a while since I posted my personal ranking of the biggest dumbasses and worst decision-makers in audio drama. Plenty of time for lots of new shows, season finales, season premieres, character introductions, for just a ton more of the worst possible decisions these people could make. So I thought, let’s see how the rankings stand now!
Rudyard Funn Yeah this one hasn’t changed.
Jon Sims/Doug Eiffel Again, no change. This question still eternally vexes me. On the one hand, Eiffel’s persistence in doing things that were very, very clearly a bad idea even in the moment and even to him, but also the fact that we are no longer accumulating new Terrible Eiffel Ideas. On the other, Jon’s genuine attempts to do his best in the worst possible scenario versus the fact that I have had to delay posting this twice now because Jon did yet another stupid thing. Ultimately, how can we compare them? In the end, both are simply human (more or less) incarnations of Murphy’s Law, in its original form: “If there’s more than one way to do a job and one of those ways will result in disaster, this guy will do it that one way.”
Dr. Howard Young (+1) SAYER Season 5 was a stunning revelation in just how much dumber Young could get. Here I was assuming that he couldn’t die again, given that it was a prequel season, and instead he manages not only to die again more than once but to set the entire plot of the show into motion.
Lucifer Kane Where would I even start?????? With the kicking down of doors? The attempt to body-check a horrible semi-incorporeal tar monster that just threw a much bigger dude through a car? The whole climax of Wonderland II, up to and including whatever the hell that ending was?? A bastard and a dumbass.
Still the entire fucking Stamatis family (+2) Are you three kidding me
Martin Blackwood (+4) When Jon “I’m going to open the coffin marked DO NOT OPEN” Sims can justifiably call your current plan of action “really stupid,” you’ve gone drastically wrong somewhere.
Brutus Feels c.f. Kane and Feels: Paranormal Investigators Mini-Episode 2, “Carrying Off a Changeling”
The Obituary Writer There’s so much that this man did in the space of the single month during which Season 1 came out, but the one my brain always goes straight to is the time he combat rolled into a trash can while trying to quietly follow someone. Also, even as a cat person myself, I question the adoption of the voraciously man-eating cats.
Pippa Campbell I considered the crew of the Rusalka a lot, and there’s an argument to be made for any of them being on here, but Pippa wins for stealing a baby.
Sir Angelo Awarded on the basis of whatever the hell he thought he was doing by deliberately sticking himself to a giant snail, and also whatever the hell he thought he was doing by collapsing a bunch of walls.
Juno Steel (-8) I’m so proud of him you guys. Our lady still has quite the journey ahead of him, both literally and metaphorically, and a lot of past mistakes to make up for, but the fact that he has recognized this, and the absolute tour de force of self-reflection and steps in the right direction that was the back end of Season 2, have gone a long way in counteracting past dumbassery. Bonus points for absolute commitment to Being Gay, Doing Crime.
Michael Tate (+4) You stayed in the office rather than sending for help???? Rather than telling Poletti it was you??? Michael wh
Jack St. James I love her, but oh my god. Would give her this slot for the Toto joke alone, but all of the breaking and entering, going into spooky tunnels alone, and singing dicks also count towards it.
Sir Damien the Pious Admittedly Damien was going to be much higher on this list, but then Part 4 of the finale came out and he resolved the worst of the dumbassery that had been plaguing him this season. Still, all of that dumbassery did happen.
Mark Sollinger (-10) Committing yourself to horrible eldritch gods, being turned into some kind of terrible formless monster, getting dunked on by a Popeyes-eating tooth ghost, and mostly failing to accomplish anything thereby? Yeah. The drop here is less because of any action of his -- with the exception of helping Chris and Nicholas, and therefore Dan -- than because everybody else was making such bad decisions all the time.
Samir (from Caravan) Dumbass monsterfucker icon. “Oh yeah, I swallowed a spectral shrieking head and she lives in my brain now, that’s totally fine though, no biggie.”
Mick Mercury (-2) Once again my beloved dumbass best friend shows up in an impossibly ridiculous situation of peril, and once again he follows it up by being heartbreakingly insightful. Did Juno make sure he was going to be alright before he left?? I need to know, Kevin
Dr. Sally Grissom It’s been a few months now since Ars Paradoxica wrapped up, and with the thematically-appropriate advantage of temporal distance, looking back at one of the best shows in audio fiction -- yeah, Dr. Grissom was a dumbass. Still love her.
Tiff (Standard Docking Procedure) This show hasn’t even properly started yet and Tiff still gets to go up here.
Freed Friend Poletti (formerly Dipshit Poletti, formerly Extinction Event Poletti, formerly Panda Bear Poletti, formerly Earthman Poletti, formerly Gerald Poletti) (-6) This is absolutely not a dumbassery redemption arc that I would ever have called, but damn if I’m not proud of this guy? He’s still Poletti, of course, and managed to deliver Leon right into the hands of Oliver West, but the determination, self-reflection, compassion and even arguable heroism he’s shown this season have dramatically turned me around on his character. Still a dumbass, but a dumbass I support wholeheartedly.
