Showing my age here, but does anyone else remember the days when there was Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fanfic where the premise was that Joel/Mike and the bots had to read bad fanfic and riff on it?
I don't think it would fly now, for pretty good reasons. And it's almost all gone, so i guess it didn't fly then.
But bots quaking in fear of the name Marissa Picard. Man. Those days were wild.

Watching s5 e5 of Star Trek: Next Gen
Picard is trapped in a lift with three children, oh god 😂
I do not envy being in Deanna's position 😂
Calling it now, Keiko is gonna go into labor during this whole thing.
Oh no, La forge and Beverly are trapped in a room with very flammable chemicals 👀
If I got to choose between that and the lift, I'd chose the lift with children in it
Me: *Sees the electric force field at the end of vent*
Me: *takes deep breath and shout/sings* LIGHTNING STRIKES, MAYBE ONCE MAYBE TWICE!
Wait, is Riker gonna us Data's severed head? That would be very weird and cool
Awwww, Data didn't take his head off *sad frown*
Oh goodness, the kids now wanna stay with Picard 😭
Damn, that one kid just keeps saying how they're all gonna die😂💀
"The levels are still rising. There must be some way to put that power out!" Why did I immediately go 'SING Geordi!' to my tv😂
KEIKO IS GIVING BIRTH? CALLED IT!
Ensign Ro, listen, Deanna knows (kinda)
YEAH Marissa! I'm so proud of you sweetie, giving that order like a true Number one!
Wait, it's 'Sonnez les matines'?! I thought it was 'something and matina' 😂😭 my whole childhood & life up to now is a lie🥸
*To Keiko about the baby turning so the head will come out right* 'Can't you tell?' Worf, my dude, whata mood
"We will separate the ship when I decide it's time and not before. Is that clear, Ensign?"
👀
Acting Captain Troi: *sits in the Captain's chair* YASSSSS!
Tumblr media
Me: *sees Data's head on a table thing*
Tumblr media
"I was wrong Counselor." Can you say it again, Ensign? I didn't quite hear you.😬
I kinda forgot all about Picard and when he pried open the lift doors I thought some dude was breaking into the Enterprise 😂
"Congratulations. You are now fully dilated to 10 cm. You can now give birth." - Lieutenant Worf
Worf you really should stop talking because you're just going to end up getting bitten or something.😂
When he said he would smack the child to induce breathing this is all I imagined:
Tumblr media
Deanna I would kill Will Riker if you want me to just so you can achieve that dream of becoming Number One (ik she's joking but I love her wholeheartedly)
Aw, the kids gave Picard a plaque.🥺
Tumblr media
(This gif has nothing to do with this at all, but it popped up when I was searching for gifs and it's so adorable so I'm including it.)

10 favorite characters in 10 different fandoms. As tagged by @jessicafish. In no particular order. (This is strangely difficult for me. Somehow my mind goes blank when I try to do this, but I'm doing my best here. Some of these — the character from the show Hanna for example — are just fresh in mind from stuff I'm watching now.)
Uncle Iroh (Avatar the Last Airbender)
Michonne (The Walking Dead – TV series, though I stopped watching at like season 6 or 7)
Furiosa (Mad Max: Fury Road)
Varric (Dragon Age II and Dragon Age Inquisition)
Marissa Wiegler (Hanna – TV series, as portrayed by Mireille Enos)
Seven of Nine (Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard)
Bobbie Draper (The Expanse – TV series)
Soren (The Dragon Prince – he completely won me over in season 3)
Maeve (Westworld – seasons 1 and 2 in particular; season 3 got strange in ways I didn't care for)
Crowley or Aziraphale (Good Omens – Book and TV show, honestly I can't choose which character is my favorite, it varies by how I'm feeling or what kind of fanfic I'm writing)

TNG: “Disaster”
Tumblr media
The Enterprise unexpectedly hits a quantum filament, triggering an isolation protocol that seals off various areas of the ship.  Captain Picard is trapped in a turbolift with a group of children.  Commander Riker and Lt. Commander Data struggle to traverse the length of the ship to reach engineering.  Doctor Crusher and Lt. Commander La Forge are stuck in a cargo bay with a plasma fire.  Lieutenant Worf is in charge of medical triage in the ship’s lounge.  That leaves Counselor Troi in command of the bridge, faced with a decision to either save the whole ship, or to separate the saucer section before the drive section explodes.
As I recall, this episode was vaguely inspired by disaster movies, and the quantum filament collision amounts to an earthquake in space.  Of course, in a real earthquake, people would be trapped by fallen debris and collapsing supports.  Here, people are trapped by emergency bulkheads that can’t be manually cleared, and artificial gravity that can’t be switched off.  So the actual disaster is that the Enterprise turns into a deathtrap when it gets hit by anything the deflector shields can’t handle.
This episode gained a curious infamy in fanfiction circles for inspiring the work of Stephen Ratliff.  Picard struggles to save the kids from the turbolift and to keep them from succumbing to despair, until he hits upon the (frankly brilliant) idea of “recruiting” Marissa as his “Number One” and the others as a “crew.”  Ratliff ran with the idea, having Picard assign “Marrissa” (sic) to actual ship’s duties and even adopting her as his daughter.  The improbably prolific career of Marrissa Picard (she’s promoted to Admiral in her late twenties) made Ratliff’s fanfic the subject of considerable ridicule.
Whenever I watch this episode, I try to hold my breath along with Crusher and La Forge, when they blow the air out of the cargo bay and then endure a total vaccum until they can repressurize the room.  (Why is the “let air out” button so far away from the “put air back” button?)  I usually get pretty close, but that’s in the comfort of my home at standard air pressure.  If it was me in the cargo bay I  suspect I’d pass out like La Forge.
This is the first episode since the pilot that acknowledges Troi is a lieutenant commander, so it makes sense to remind the viewers that she’s not a civilian attaché.  (Although the way Chief O’Brien explains it makes it sound like her rank is honorary, or ceremonial.)  It’s odd to think Ensign Ro didn’t pick up on this before now, but I suppose the story needed somebody who didn’t know, and she makes as much sense as anyone.  To be fair, Ro is clearly surprised Troi is the ranking officer because Troi is clearly uninvolved with the ship’s operations, and it sort of doesn’t make sense that she’d hold that kind of authority over systems she doesn’t understand.  Troi, to her credit, elects to address this later on in “Thine Own Self,” but that doesn’t change the fact that Starfleet should have dealt with it sooner.

meta post from  1 / 24 / 2016  ( redux )
picard  ( any rank )  drunkenly tripping over something like a chair or the threshold to another room and all anyone hears is loud and passionate swearing in nearly incomprehensible french.  or at  RIKER  &  DEANNA’S  WEDDING  bc you can bet your ass there’ll be crates of chateau picard  & singing  “auprès de ma blonde”  ( like he did with his brother robert in season 4 )  after  ( half-assed )  teaching it to riker and wesley and et cetera
singing “sur le pont d’avignon”  ...   s6:  the chain of command,  part two  //  while being tortured  for vital information on starfleet’s defense strategies   picard:  [ on the floor,  sleep deprived and dehydrated ]  sur le pont d'avignon,  on y danse on y danse --  madred  ( torturer ):  wake up!  where were you? picard:  at home.  sunday dinner.  we would all sing afterward. madred:  what a charming picture.  the picard family,  voices raised in song.  is this what's keeping you from breaking?  memories of home and hearth?  images of happier times?  i must congratulate you.  you're remarkably strong willed.
...  and “frère jacques”  to will & deanna’s  ( future )  kids.  s5:  disaster  //  while giving a tour to the winners of the ship’s school science fair,  shit goes down and picard,  with his broken ankle,  coaxes the three kids to climb before the turbo-lift plummets,  killing them all picard:  we're right with you, patterson.  you're not going to fall.  everything will be all right if you just keep climbing.  what we need is a climbing song.  marissa,  is there a song you sing at school? marissa:  the laughing vulcan and his dog? picard:  ...i’m afraid i don't know that one.  i know!  frère jacques. that's a song i used to sing when i was at school.  patterson,  do you know that one?  good.  it goes like this:  frère jacques,  frère jacques,  dormez vous?  dormez vous? all:  sonnez les matines,  sonnez les matines,  ding ding dong,  ding ding dong. picard:  very good.  now,  keep singing.
“ON BOARD A MAN O’ WAR”  there's many a brave commander*,  with grief he shook his head  /  but yet their grief had no relief,  for nelson,  he lay dead.  /  it was a fatal musket ball that caused our hero for to fall.  /  he cried  `fight on.  god bless you all '  on board a man of war.
generations  ( film ) picard: right.  oh,  …from being a small child,  i can remember being told about the family line.  the picard who fought at trafalgar.
s3:  the best of both worlds,  part one guinan:  trouble sleeping? picard:  something of a tradition,  guinan.  the captain touring the ship before a battle. guinan:  before a hopeless battle,  if i remember the tradition correctly. picard:  not necessarily.  nelson toured the HMS Victory before trafalgar. guinan:  yes,  but nelson never returned from trafalgar, did he? picard:  no,  but the battle was won. [ note ]  he’s summoned to the bridge before they finish this conversation,  and soon kidnapped by the borg  in front of  ( commander * )  riker and the rest of the bridge crew
“DON’T FORGET YOUR OLD SHIPMATE” o,  long we’ve tossed on the rolling main,  now we’re safe ashore,  jack
s1:  conspiracy  “friends,  close friends,  are few and far between.  two of the oldest and closest are jack crusher,  may he rest in peace,  and walker keel.  before various missions split us apart,  we were virtually inseperable.”
hc:  he quietly sings it to himself on the anniversary of their deaths over a glass of chateau picard
OTHER POEMS: THE SECRET OF THE SEA THE SAILOR BOY  ( “fool,”  he answer’d ,  “death is sure  /  to those that stay and those that roam,  /  but i will nevermore endure  /  to sit with empty hands at home. ) CHRISTMAS AT SEA  ( “and well i knew the talk they had,  the talk that was of me,  /  of the shadow on the household and the son that went to sea;  /  and o the wicked fool i seemed,  in every kind of way,  /  to be here and hauling frozen ropes on blessed christmas day.” )
[ note ]  s6:  tapestry  //  picard dies after being shot,  serving as a federation diplomat;  when he awakens,  he finds Q bathed in golden light and is indignant as fuck
Q:  very well.  if you really require more evidence of your post-mortem status,  i guess i’ll just have to provide you some. maurice:  jean-luc,  i told you not to go running off to that academy. picard:  father!  maurice:  i told you that starfleet would bring you to a bad end,  but you wouldn’t listen.  now look at you.  dead before your time. picard:  Q, enough of this. Q:  enough what? maurice:  why couldn’t you have listened?  didn’t you know that i was working for your best interests? picard:  Q, stop this. maurice:  after all these years,  even now,  you manage to disappoint me, jean-luc.
A SAILOR’S SONG  ( “and swish of rope and ring of chain  /  are music to men who sail the main.  /  then,  if you love me,  let me sail  /  while a vessel dares the deep;” )
[ note ]  s1:  we’ll always have paris  //  the enterprise responds to a distress signal;  the wife of the scientist responsible for the chaos is the equivalent of picard’s high school sweetheart,  whom he left behind to pursue his career in starfleet
jenice:  i waited all day.  and it was raining.  it rained the rest of the week.  i went to starfleet headquarters looking for you,  but you'd already shipped out.  so,  come on,  jean-luc.  let's hear the truth. picard:  it was fear.  fear of seeing you,  losing my resolve.  fear of staying,  losing myself.  fear that neither of these choices was right,  and that -- and that either would have -- jenice:  for a long time,  not a day went by when i didn't look up into the sky,  and wonder. picard:  each time that i returned to earth,  my thoughts were filled with you. jenice:  i’ve thought a lot about this over the years,  and perhaps you're leaving out your greatest fear.  the real reason you left. picard:  which was? jenice:  that life with me would have somehow made you ordinary.
L’HOMME ET LA MER  ( man and the sea )
hc: will riker recites  “o captain!  my captain!”  at some point after picard’s death thanks to  @psychiatrys
[1/15/2016 9:56:23 pm] numbah one:  we can make this happen [1/15/2016 9:56:33 pm] master of the stars.: bring it [1/15/2016 9:57:23 pm] numbah one:  i bloody will [1/15/2016 9:57:26 pm] master of the stars.:  here captain [1/15/2016 9:57:31 pm] master of the stars.:  dear father [1/15/2016 9:57:36 pm] master of the stars.: this arm beneath your head [1/15/2016 9:58:11 pm] numbah one: it is some dream that on the deck you’ve fallen cold and dead
“HEART OF OAK” ( here’s the full,  actual song ) sung by an impostor,  yes,  but said impostor has full access to picard’s real memories
s3:  allegiance picard  ( impostor ): you know, back when i was in the academy,  we would follow every toast with a song [ note ] this could be supported by the fact that various crew members eventually join in,  clearly familiar with the words
