Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"If love is like a possession, maybe my letters are like my exorcisms. My letters set me free. Or at least they’re supposed to."
Tumblr media
Jenny Han's To All The Boys I've Loved Before is a tale of love, heartbreak and the chaotic nature of being a teenager. As Lara Jean Covey, our shy and socially awkward daydreamer, enters her junior year of high school, she combats the chaos that her life becomes when the love letters that she never intended to send reach their recipients. Combining the tropes of fake dating with the law of opposites attract, the relationship Jenny Han weaves between Lara Jean and Peter is astoundingly and unexpectedly adorable. Peter Kavinsky is a sporty, popular boy who is a genuinely kind-hearted person and Lara Jean is a bookish introvert who bakes and lives in a daydream... yet, they work. Mostly because who wouldn't want to be written notes every day by your adorable fake boyfriend and chased down the corridor (in Harry Potter and Marvel costumes obviously) on Halloween? Not only is this book a perfectly adorable romance, but it's a discussion of grief and the detrimental impact that loss can have upon a family. The relationship between the three Covey sisters - Lara Jean, Margot and Kitty respectively - is at the heart of the book and adds to the coming-of-age feel that flows through the pages. Alongside all of her romantic drama, Lara Jean is concerned with trying to set a good example for her younger sister Kitty in the absence of Margot being at university and their mother having passed away. Through the Covey sisters, Jenny Han highlights the importance of family and the ways in which we impact upon those we love dearly even with the smallest, heartfelt things we do. To all of you out there who dream of the perfect romance; of love letters; and fit into the band of socially awkward introverts - this book is for you.

I need Jenny Han to write either a book or novela. It need to be Peter and Lara-Jean's wedding and how magical life is for then after they made it! At this wedding Josh and Margot need to get back together because God they are just so depressing apart.
Anyway, this is my petition

“Be in love with Peter if you want, but be careful with your heart. Things feel like they’ll be forever, but they aren’t. Love can go away, or people can, without even meaning to. Nothing is guaranteed.”

while i will personally never recover from my heart being stolen by John Ambrose McClaren, Jenny Han writing about dead moms and the aftermath of mothers dying is better than any romantic storyline i've read from her by far.

when the feeling sinks in
Rating: T
Words: 3.2k
Status: 2/3
Summary:
Kitty might be imagining it, but this car ride is awkward as fuck.
She’s in the back while Juliana drives and Yuri is in the passenger seat of the rental car, and as a bit of a middle-seat experience aficionado, Kitty has to say that this one is more than a bit lackluster. She’s seen many stages of many couples from this vantage point: Peter and Lara Jean – both in their fake and real moments, her dad and Trina, even Margot and some of her exes. And from what Kitty can tell, from what she’s learned – especially from her eldest sister and her exes – it’s pretty clear that Yuri and Juliana are in a weird place.
For better or for worse, Kitty knows how relationships work. She’s a matchmaker, afterall, even if it seems impossible for her to truly find her person sometimes.
(Or, things only get more awkward with Kitty's visitors.)

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE | PS I LOVE YOU | ALWAYS AND FOREVER (Lara Jean Song Covey & Peter Kavinsky)
COVINSKY HEADCANONS (post-book) pt 1
Lara Jean and Peter stay together through college, sometimes the distance helps them calm themselves after a fight, sometimes it causes a fight, most times it makes them realize if they can survive this they’ll survive anything
Peter writes Lara Jean at least once a month, a real letter, on nice paper. His frat friends vote him the most romantic boyfriend. It starts as a tease but it’s true
LJ, Margot, Kitty and Doctor Covey come to UW for Peter’s last game of the season. Lara Jean writes the number of his shirt on her cheek. Peter l o v e s it
That game is the first opportunity for Lara Jean to meet Peter’s friends and vice versa. The guys hope that since they met her they wouldn’t have to listen so much about her. Boy were they wrong
The scrapbook Lara Jean gave Peter became a hit. One of Peter’s friends asked his girlfriend why he didn’t get one of those. It was quite a loud fight
After the first year the students were allowed to have their cars with them so Peter could visit Lara Jean more often. And he did. And so did LJ, just with a lot more hesitation

Note
Why didn't netflix hire korean biracial girls to play Lara Jean and Kitty in To All the Boys I've Loved Before trilogy and XO Kitty? Lana Condor is a Vietnamese American and Anna Cathcart is Chinese descent. Also, Margot Covey was played by a half Hawaiian and half Chinese actress. The actresses are great but😭
I know what you mean nonny!!!! I honestly don't think it's an excuse but 6 years ago when this franchise was cast there was less scrutiny about racial casting.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018): Rom-Com Roundtable
Tumblr media
youtube
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) (an adaptation of the novel by Jenny Han) directed by Susan Johnson follows Lara Jean Covey, half Korean half white high schooler. She writes, but does not send, letters to every crush she has ever had, and for some reason, they begin responding to her. Lara Jean realizes that her younger sister, Kitty, mailed them all. Lara Jean has two big crushes: Peter Kavinsky and Josh (her other sister’s ex-boyfriend). Fraught with drama, LJ navigates her (and her family’s) feelings towards the two boys and ultimately decides Peter is the boy for her!
Tumblr media
An interesting note is that LJ is played by a fully Vietnamese actress and Kitty and Margot are played by half Chinese half white actresses. This habit of casting people of mismatching races is something that I’ve always struggled to understand. In this film, the Korean identity of the Covye sisters is heavily emphasized, but none of them are Korean? And LJ isn’t even half Asian? Their half-Korean identity also brings into question why they were written as ‘happa.’ Was it to make their “otherness” more digestible for the audience?
While this very popular mainstream film does portray mostly heteronormative relationships, it is an exception to Kaklamanidou’s argument about race. They write that “mainstream cinema is still reluctant in creating opportunities for starring roles for ‘the other’” (139). The sisters are half Korean, and this is brought up on several occasions. Their Korean mother, who died a few years prior, still very much has a presence in their lives, so much so that they often refer to themselves as the “Song Sisters"; they're first and foremost Korean. Having a half-Asian character that is very heavily characterized as fully-Asian would be a text that contradicts Kaklamanidou’s belief that it’s only “the small screen that proves more open and attuned to the above social reality” (138).
This film also begs the question of if LJ’s status of “other” is exploitative. When writing about Jennifer Lopez’s role in The Wedding Planner, Kaklamanidou writes that Lopez’s Latin characteristics are retained and exploited to “help the film achieve greater popularity” (142). I would argue that adapting a trilogy written by a Korean-American author and having main cast members who are Asian is a good start to preventing exploitation. However, this is not a catch-all. In the United States, having a white director and predominantly white cast is always a risk for fertilization and misrepresentation.
How do you think having only the white parent alive affected the racial dynamics of this film?
Do you think writing the characters as "happa" makes them more digestible?

Book Review: To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Tumblr media
Lara Jean Song Covey doesn’t have a mom, but she has sisters and a dad and an optimistic viewpoint. She also has a precious few memories and possessions of her mother’s. The teal hat box her mother gave her was meant to keep her most treasured keepsakes. It’s where Lara Jean keeps her love letters. There are five of them, in all.
They’re not letters that have been written to her. They’re letters Lara Jean has written—to all the boys she’s loved and let go. She’s achingly honest in these letters, because they’re meant for her eyes alone. Once the letters are signed, sealed, and dropped into the hatbox, Lara Jean is released from heartache.
It’s just that heartache finds her all over again when her letters get mailed out. Three out of five past loves go to her school and they all have something to say about Lara Jean’s letters. It’s a lot to handle when her older sister and rock, Margot, has gone away all the way to Scotland for college.
Once those letters are mailed, Lara Jean’s life goes from zero to a hundred, and she’s not a good driver. Can she make it as the oldest Covey girl without a cataclysmic collision?
-
Lara Jean is quite the romantic soul. She gathers memories like treasure, treasures objects with romantic stories, and romanticizes the simplest joys in life. In the tradition of off-beat middle kids, her sisters are more practical than she is. Of course, despite their differences, Lara Jean sees herself and her sisters as the three Song girls: indissoluble
I love Lara Jean’s relationship with her family. Even though she knows her father struggles to fully understand her and her sisters, she genuinely appreciates his every attempt and show of love. She also appreciates how much her older sister, Margot, has done as a surrogate mother. Lara Jean hopes she can be as good of a big sister to her little sister Kitty.
One of Lara Jean’s love letters was written for Peter Kavinsky. It was, admittedly, the angriest of the letters. Lara Jean was quite outraged that Peter K. had the audacity to make her like him. Even though Peter K. now goes by Kavinsky, he’s still able to make Lara Jean like him when she least expects it. The problem is that Lara Jean still has no confidence in her ability to make Peter like her back.
5 stars! Recommended for anyone who likes quirky girls, hallway shenanigans, and fake-but-actually-real dating.
