Margazhi Morning

The month of Margazhi, the month of Lord Krishna, where even the simplest routines are transformed into soulful rituals.

At around 4:45 in the morning, even before the first rays of sun grace the horizon, I wake up to the ethereal sound of “Andal Thirupaavai’.The cool morning air carries the enchanting fragrance of fresh jasmine, exemplifying purity and devotion. The sunlight gently filters through my curtains, as I go downstairs to help my mother with the Rangoli. This is one of the only things that pulls me out of bed during this month. The gentle scraping sound of the rice powder adds to the soft melodies of cows mooing, the birds singing, and the dogs barking, creating a gentle symphony in the morning air. As the day unfolds, one can find ants in the rangoli, carrying tiny grains of rice powder with their Herculean strength. 

The cool morning air brushes against me. A steaming hot shower in the morning washes away the morning chill, creating a harmonious start to the day. A tranquil atmosphere surrounds me as I engage in my morning prayers. I close my eyes, visualising the divine presence of the lord of ethereal enchantment , as I chant the Thirupavai.  

Following this is my breakfast, soft idlis and steaming hot sambar. The pillowy idlis, dipped in the aromatic sambar creates a burst of flavours in my mouth. The journey of the food from  my mouth to the stomach is a delightful voyage packed with flavours and satisfaction. What is a meal without a sweet? Chakara Pongal- A culinary masterpiece infused with the essence of lingering warmth and sweetness. The sweet, granular feeling of the pongal along with the subtle flavour of nuts and ghee is simply delectable and nostalgic. 

From the sacred chants that awaken the soul to the flavours that tantalise the taste buds, it is evident that Margazhi is not merely a passage of time but a journey of the spirit, a time to immerse oneself in devotion, gratitude, and the simple joys that life has to offer. Margazhi weaves a tapestry of traditions and emotions, reminding us of the timeless beauty of faith, family, and festivity.

1- The Exile

And after he had walked a long way through the dark green forest, Thirumalai saw the little derelict hut standing near the guava trees. Though he couldn't see anyone in the vicinity, the two still-dripping, wet sarees spread over the clothesline gave him much-needed consolation. He slowly opened the door, which was only bolted from outside, and helped himself to some water from the earthen pot. He took the package of kozhukkattai from his bag and started to munch on it.

"Has pillaiyar started feasting on his modakam?"

He nearly dropped the kozhukkattai. Why does she have to sneak on him like this? Memories of happy old times made him feel even sadder. The woman standing before him looks quite different from the sister he brought up. In fact, she looks older and more deranged than the mute queen who used to wander in Lanka. Nandini placed a basket with tubers in one corner of the hut. She took one kozhukkattai from the banana leaf package and wrinkled her face as she took a bite.

"Eww, it tastes too sweet".

"That's because you don't eat any sweet food anymore."

"Hmmm . . . When will Arulmozhi be back?'

Thirumalai felt anger and curiosity simultaneously. Every time he walks all the way here, she has only this one thing to inquire about.

"Nandini, do you have any concern about this poor annan? Do you know that I turned 50 in the last Aippasi? Come with me. We can go to Haridwar and Mathura".

"Didn't you just visit Dwaraka with gurunathan? Take some rest, anna. As you said, you are getting old".

Thirumalai hesitated to say anything more. It was with great difficulty that he convinced her to settle down here. There are some small villages and even a Tirumal kovil in this area. He had tasked a woman with buying groceries for her, and she carried out the task happily for a few gold coins. He feared that she would run away if he offended her, and he wouldn't see her again.

"Will Arulmozhi visit Chola desam before the margazhi thiruvizha?"

Thirumalai sighed. He debated whether he should relay the happy or sad news to her. The trouble was that he didn't know what would be happy news for Nandini and what wouldn't be.

Chinna Pazhuvettaraiyar and Nandini weren't on good terms, but she has always respected him, perhaps grudgingly. Should she be informed that he has attained the lotus feet of his Parameswaran? Let her remain blissful in her ignorance. The other news was even more confusing. Ilaya Pirattiyar is adamant that Nandini always loved her husband and would have snatched him away if she had the opportunity. Maybe this will give her some happiness.

"My dear, something interesting is going to happen soon."

"Is Arulmozhi coming back for this?"

"Oh, not that. Do you think there aren't other people in Chola Desam? Arulmozhi, Arulmozhi, Arulmozhi... Listen to this. This is about Vanthiyar".

"Who?"

"Our friend Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevar, the Vanarkula-veeran".

Nandini gazed into the darkness absent mindedly and hummed. Thirumalai recognised her absent-mindedness and disinterest. She always did that when he spoke about things she wasn't interested in but didn't bother enough to stop him.

"He is getting married again. Perumal hasn't blessed them with a child yet. How long will he wait? Isn't he the last of his line?"

Nandini's face lit up, which confused Thirumalai even more. The last time she fell in love with a man, she dragged him from temple to temple, crying and singing pasurams. She has never asked him anything about Vallavarayan since he was exonerated of all charges. Is this the maturity that comes with age or is it because it is the misfortune of her sworn enemy, Ilaya Piratti?

"Ponniyin Selvar won't miss the wedding of his brother-in-law, will he?"

This girl! 

"You know what? I concede defeat, and no, I don't think he will attend the wedding."

Thirumalai washed his hands and told Nandini that he was feeling tired and sleepy. Ponniyin Selvan rarely spent any time in the Chola country after the death of his parents. The people seemed to have calmed down after they realised that their favourite wouldn't get to rule anytime soon. Even his sister ilayapiratti has shifted her affections to her nephew. It looks like this obsession is the only inheritance Nandini received from her unfortunate mother.

Ofc he won't, sakhi! He's the most considerate bestie ever trust me coz I had also taken up to wake up at 4am to worship him and do fasting during the special Vishnu month of Margazhi (December-January) but couldn't continue coz I caught cold. I was so sad but we literally still went to Dwarka justtt as Margazhi came to an end and I took it as a sign that Kanha had forgiven me and loved me always <3

Coz if he won't understand us in this world then who will?

Arulmozhi Varman (Analysis series #1)

“Very well. Listen, and I shall tell you this without the slightest shadow of doubt: By the end of the month of Aani, Kaveri and her sister rivers will overflow, almost breaking their banks with fresh floods. People familiar with Ponni will know that these are new waters and that they will only increase, as the days pass by. And that is how it will be through the months of Aavani and Purattasi. From Kaarthigai to Margazhi, the floods will begin to subside—and people will understand then, as well, that such is the way of nature. That, Thambi, is the Chozha Empire, now: it grows and grows, like the new floods of Ponni and it will continue to expand for the next few hundred years. At the moment, the Chozha Empire is like that of a waxing moon. It expands evermore. But there are days, yet, for it to become a radiant full moon. And so it shall be.”

This is what the Kudanthai jothidar tells Vanthiyathevan about the Chozha dynasty. I love how rivers are constantly compared here, and how the flow of the river depicts the dynasty- the current conquering of territories by Karikalar and Varmar, more the former, is indicated at the start. The overflowing of expansion indicates Arulmozhi Varman’s fourteen year journey of raising the tiger flag, and when he ascends, the flow will subside, for he will conquer all that he decides to. 

He is the real expansion here- it is he who makes the waxing moon of the Chozha empire the radiant full moon. The nearing of the Chozha golden age comes with the ascension of RajaRaja Chozhan.

Arudra Darshanam is celebrated on the full moon night of Margazhi month of Tamil Calendar. This is observed on the thiruvadhirai nakshaththram (star) falling in this month.The festival marks the day of cosmic dance of Lord Shiva and it is celebrated in the form of Lord Nataraja. In Sri Ramanasramam, it is also celebrated in a grand manner. At around 4 am in 6 January 2023, the Nataraja idol in the Mathrubutheswara temple was anointed and decorated with flowers. This was followed by chanting of verses in praise of Nataraja followed by Aarthi...

Śrī Aruṇācala Navamaṇimālai - The Necklace of Nine Gems for Arunachala,  Verse 1

🕉️ 

 acalaṉē yāyiṉu maccavai taṉṉi lacalaiyā mammaiyedi rāḍu — macala vuruvilac catti yoḍuṅgiḍa vōṅgu maruṇā calameṉ ḏṟaṟi.

Padacchēdam (words rearranged in natural prose order): acalaṉē āyiṉum, a-c-savai taṉṉil acalai ām ammai edir āḍum. acala uruvil a-c-satti oḍuṅgiḍa, ōṅgum aruṇācalam eṉḏṟu aṟi.

English translation:

Though actually one who is motionless, in that assembly hall he dances opposite mother, who is acalā. Know that when that śakti subsides back in the motionless form, Aruṇācalam is exalted.

Explanatory paraphrase:

Though [Lord Siva is] actually acalaṉ [one who is motionless, being the one immutable ground from which and in which everything else appears], in that assembly hall [of Cidambaram] he dances [in the form of Nataraja] opposite [the divine] mother, who is acalā [the consort of acalaṉ]. Know that when that śakti [the divine mother] subsides back in the motionless form [the fundamental form of Lord Siva], Aruṇācalam is exalted [that is, in the motionless form of Aruṇācalam, which rises high above all his other forms, Lord Siva shines exalted in his natural state].

Note : 

The word Achalan means the motionless one and is a name of Lord Siva which is used to denote the fact that He is the immutable, Supreme Reality. The word Achalai means the consort of Achalan and is a name of Sakti, the Divine Mother.

Though He is motionless by nature, in Chidambaram Lord Siva had to dance in front of Sakti in order to bring Her frenzied dance to an end. But in the form of Arunachala Lord Siva remains ever motionless, and thus by the power of His mere stillness Sakti was irresistably attracted to Him and with great love she subsided in Him and became one with Him. Hence of all the forms of Lord Siva, Arunachala shines as the most exalted.

The words ‘ongum Arunachalam’ means ‘rises high’ or rises above others, and hence the words ‘ongum Arunachalam endru ari’ (know that He shines exalted as Arunachala) may also be taken to mean, know that Arunachala is superior (to Chidambaram)!
