Man of La Mancha was written for Quantum Leap. How is this possible, you ask? Man of La Mancha the musical was written in 1965 and Quantum Leap aired in 1989. Well, theorising that one could time travel within his own lifetime

The top 10 Broadway-style musicals performed in opera houses (according to Operabase.com)
It's always interesting when an opera company stages a classic musical in addition to its usual operatic repertoire. Allegedly, on those occasions, these are the most popular choices.
My Fair Lady
West Side Story
Fiddler on the Roof
Kiss Me, Kate
Sweeney Todd
Evita
Jesus Christ Superstar
Cabaret
The Sound of Music
Man of La Mancha

Last night I dreamed I was watching a performance of Man of la Mancha, and Don Quixote was wearing nothing but gray longjohns when he set off on his adventures. When he meets the barber he winds up wearing the barber's drape over them, and after "Golden Helmet of Mambrino," when he puts the shaving basin on his head, it hangs down over his eyes and has 2 pointy legs that stick straight up like bat ears.
Caped Crusader indeed.
All the rest of the script/score was as per canon, but the actor played it as if he were playing Batman for the entire rest of the ride.
Best musical I have ever staged in my sleep.
Wish I had been able to record it.

What kind of paladin do you play (Musicals Version)?
Which song speaks to the heart of what drives your paladin? 1. To Dream The Impossible Dream. From Man of La Mancha.
2. C'est Moi. Camelot.
3. Stars. Les Miserable.
Because I am a huge DnD and musicals nerd and for too long have questions like these boiled in my mind. And because it is me...I will make an item for the winner. Or the top two if it gets 100 interactions. Or all three if it gets 500. And a subclass for the winner if it gets over 1000.

Parallels
Man of La Mancha (1972)
Tumblr media
"Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!"
Cinderella (2015)
Tumblr media
"Just because it's what's done doesn't mean it's what should be done!"
"And Ella continued to see the world not as it is, but as it could be, if only you believe in courage, and kindness, and occasionally, just a little bit...of magic."
As a child I grew up watching Man of La Mancha with my family (I have older parents so that film came out when they were high school/college aged) and I always felt Cervantes speech about how to see the world deep in my bones even as a child. I mean isn't that what being a child is all about seeing things with imagination and the goodness in people around you. It's why Dolly Parton as a little girl didn't see the made up flashy dressing woman in town as a "tramp" she thought she was beautiful. You don't have prejudices about people based on what they look like as a child. It's why Don Quixote can see Aldonza the Whore as his fair Lady Dulcinea and her dish cloth as gossamer. He's resorted back to a child's view of the world in his "madness" if it can be called madness to see the world in a better light than those around you who claim to see it how it is but just have layers of bitterness and prejudice.
It's why Ella can see the value in little animals like her mice and why she helps the odd looking old woman with bad manners even though she's mid breakdown. "What is a cup of milk? Nothing. But kindness... Kindness makes it everything." Ella is like a lived out real world version of the quote Cervantes has in Man of La Mancha. Because she's not pretending the world is okay she's faced it with courage and can look it in the eye and she knows it by it's right name. But she has the courage to continue to be kind and to continue to see the world through the eyes she had as a little girl during her golden childhood.

Propaganda under the cut
a Breakfast over Sugar
It’s so beautiful and heartbreaking.
Marvin’s wife having figured out he’s cheating on her with a man begs him to stay anyway. Marvin repeats that him leaving would be better for the both of them.
In the script there’s a note: “His WIFE, understanding everything, wants him to stay. MARVIN wants to go. Or MARVIN wants to stay. She wants him to go. Anyway, he’s going.”
And everything’s just so unresolved and the two parts tangle with each other and convey so much emotion with their beautiful harmonies.
The part where they sing over each other like “Pass the sugar please - I can’t believe we’ve worked - you can’t go on as if you’re dying - to end up this way - the martyr just won’t play hit me, strip me - strip me down but STAYYYY” has me constantly in tears completely breathless. The wife’s vocals and raw emotion just.
Man Of La Mancha (I, Don Quixode)
From one of the greatest musical of all time, this duet introduces us to the two primary characters and their wants/motivations. It establishes the mission of this would-be knight-errant and his squire, and their relationship.
In the context of the musical, it takes place just after Miguel de Cervantes has physically transformed himself into his most famous character and transports us from the prison to the world of the story.
