222 mariver where shiver thinks they are going to bust a strange person who has been collecting information and stalking supernatural events and left a foolishly sloppy digital footprint (shiver thinks marie is some sort of mastermind who has been causing all the shit going wrong). Needless to say Marie is way better at the espionage and is intentionally luring them into a trap to assess whether deep cut need to be dealt with or if they’re a potentially useful asset. Shiver cannot get over the fact that they got whomped so bad and keeps trying to dig for details on her despite the fact that Marie gave them her card and has met with deep cut face to face once or twice. She is amused by this keeps leaving small paper trials for “impromptu meetings” where shiver tracks her down right into a trap, to a certain extent they know they’re not a step ahead but a combination of hubris and a weird desire to get a keep seeing marie and also leg up on her (ha). One time Shiver does something kind of drastic and unexpected that takes like all their effort and catches Marie by surprise and almost gets the last laugh before Marie “watch the hands, not the mouth”s them to flip it back and then it gets really really homoerotic and maybe they kiss a little and Marie gives them a “I’ll see you again soon sharky.” And shiver is eternally bothered in both pride and gay by it and insists to Frye “No, I’m not distracted, I’m fine, don’t worry about it.” Frye knows because it’s so fucking obvious and so does big man.

"are those two, you know, passionate friends? yuri, isolation, and growing up": this was so good! i wasn't familiar with the term Class S before this. i really enjoyed the three different series examined. the homosociality in shoujo manga is a really interesting topic. homophobic authors and fans love it as an conflicting and opposed category to the possibility of gay love, even though that doesn't really make any sense. that rich homosociality, of girls' relationships with other girls being prioritized over their relationships with boys, being a foundation for yuri manga, is much more reasonable.

it's like how looking at ryoko kui's art made me think, "man, she loves women so much"--and while the homoerotic undertones are present, it doesn't really matter if that "love for women" is in a straight (aesthetic? platonic? non-sexual?) or gay way, because effectively even if kui were a straight women, her appreciation for women wouldn't necessarily be inherently heterosexual--or unheterosexual. as zoe argues, high school girls literally dating each other is not necessarily viewed as unheterosexual behaviour, when legible by a specific framework and structure that women are expected to live in accordance to.

anyway--another thing that obviously came to mind while reading this essay is utena (big surprise), with the emphasis on graduation and "adulthood."

Random: A gamer’s diary entry for October 2023!

While I finish writing, and playing, my next backlog games I’m excited to add to the wishlist ‘Little Goody Two Shoes’. Which looks like it’s going to be getting a physical release. (Which I won’t be picking this game up until the physical drops. I already know I’ll like it.)

One of my favorite YouTube channels called Nostalook worked on the trailer (and I think the in game cutscenes as well) and their work is stunning as usual. It really captures the 90s anime look. It deeply reminds me of Princess Maker.

Also it’s a shoujo yuri. Female romancable characters only! (And they’re all so ✨ PRETTY ✨) I can’t explain how HAPPY that makes me. I just hope it stays in an innocent direction.

You know, because in majority yuri isn’t made for women. 😐

I get it, but at the same time I feel locked out of the content because it’s so obviously not for me. But that’s a complaint for a different post on a different day! Makes me wonder if men feel the same way about yaoi.

I was very bad this month. There were a lot of physical sales. And then my preorders for new games rolled in. I always prioritize my physical games over my… “digital” games, so those will be in the front of my backlog!

I’m already playing a few of these games, so my reviews on those should be out next week!

I decided to skip this month’s two biggest releases altogether until about next year. I want the GOTY Spider-Man 2 when it comes with all of the DLC for $20. The first one was amazing. I’m just willing to wait on it. Which is a similar story for Mario Wonder. I mostly use the fall season to get all the titles I’ve been wanting for a freaking sick deal. Why should I have to pay full price?

The older I get, the more I feel like I appreciate weird games and indie titles more anyway. I feel like those other projects have the freedom to take more aesthetic risks than the big companies. Not because of the creatives inside (They tend to always have good ideas), but the stockholders. 🙄

I adore some of these triple A titles to my core, but I crave to see more new things too. Different things.

Dave The Diver is a good example. That seems rad. I like ocean games. I like that we get more of them now. I’m gonna wait and see if that one gets a physical as well. You collect fish to go back to your restaurant to make sushi? Sign me up!

Don’t even get me started on Limited Run’s releases this month.

While ‘Persona 4’ and ‘This Way Madness Lies’ are no brainers for me; I was EXTREMELY on the fence about ‘Persona 3 Portable’. (I did pick it up reluctantly)

The remake of Persona 3 will be upon us soon and I don’t know if I’ll want to play P3P again. The problem lies in the fact that most of these games become much more expensive later. Buying it on “launch” from Limited Run usually IS the cheaper option.

That shit annoys me so bad. I don’t like picking up games for value. But because the game might be value I have to be ahead of the scalpers and pay for it at its maybe cheapest.

I collect games because I like ‘em. I want to play them and love them. I want to use my stuff. I don’t give a fuck about the “value”. I respect the folks that do care about that stuff but I plain just don’t.

But that’s also just kinda life. Not much can be done about other people. You can only truly control yourself. 🙄

Overall October has been an exceptionally excellent month for gaming! We’ve had so much good stuff come out this fall season. I’m excited for next month as well! Super Mario RPG will be making its re-debut and I can’t wait to talk about that one!

Personality: INTJ 3w4. I tend to act very arrogantand cocky as a defense mechanism. I don't like being vulnerable with people because it's not their job to worry about my problems. I come across very calm and collected and people rely on me for advice but can't let myself depend on anyone. I'm really analytical and am good at finding loopholes and working around problems under pressure. I'm not good with emotional support and can come across a little cold because of that. Under everything I think I'm very kind but feel like I burden people with my presence a lot of times. I have a hard time relaxing or enjoying things because I've been conditioned to always consider how it will look on mine and my family's reputation. I'm a perfectionist and hold myself to very high standards. I look intimidating but I'm actually just socially awkward and suck at small talk (because it seems kind of pointless to me). My love language is giving gifts but I'm not sure what my love language to receive is.

Hobbies/Likes: I love fashion and I've been a model since I was 14, I used to do pageants as a kid, I make my own music and music is probably the thing I love the most. It's really what I use to process the world so music is definitely the way to my heart. I can't play any instruments but I can sing and do digital music production. (I've always wanted to be in a rock band) I'm a good artist but I don't like doing it on a deadline (I took an AP art class back in high school and didn't draw for 2 years after it cuz I hated being forced to draw. It's like when something you like becomes a chore) I've gotten back into drawing recently tho. I've also been doing martial arts since I was 7 + fencing. I'm good at chess and poker and made money from playing/betting on games when I was younger. I also love reading.

Dislikes: Misogyny (when people especially men undermine my intelligence and experience and end up making a mistake I warned them about only for them to listen when another man repeats the same thing l've been saying since the beginning), big egos with nothing to back it up, people who can't keep up with me (I wouldn't want to be in a relationship with someone whose hand I have to hold all the time. They need to be on the same level/wavelength as me and not drag me down), being a coward and not standing up for your own beliefs/motives, people that are way too nice (whoever I end up with has to have a mean streak because it shows they are able to take action when needed), being self absorbed and not considering the consequences of your actions. People who have a moral superiority complex that think they're better than me for not wanting to break rules to get what they want. People who can't take responsibility for what they do (Everything I do is on purpose so even if it's a bad thing I'll admit to it because whatever happens as a result is no one's problem but my own). Although I will say there's sometimes an exception to these things depending on the person and situation.

draken: draken is the type not to force you into something you're uncomfortable with. i'd say between the two of you he'd be more vocal about his emotions so i think he will balance the you of out but at the same i don't think he's the type to crave/ask for attention or affection which is good bc from what i picked from what you said, sometimes you come across as cold. also, what's good about him is he views individuals through their strengths which is a good match for you bc from the things you told me i assumed that you wouldn't want to be treated as a soft person which a partner has to constantly look out for and that's how draken is. he trusts in the abilities of the people close to him loke how he trusts mikey and takemichi. physically, damn you both look hot together and i'm talking about (sorry to compare you both to dogs, i tried ok) model poodles walking down a runway. you both look untouchable and i would definitely use you both as a shield when someone comes up to me to pick a fight. overall, i do think you're a good match for draken if you want someone who can understand you without the burden of explaining all the time and if you want a partner who supports with whatever you pursue bc he trusts you.

PHL-5 My Mama And The Full Scale Invasion

Every conversation Ricky had with their mom on the phone before she died always ended with Ricky saying “Please call me if you need anything, I love you, and please behave.” The answer always was “no I won’t, love you too, and absolutely not.” And that was Ricky’s mother talking. She had MS, refused to move in with us, and was always causing trouble in the fight for disability rights. Take that feeling, multiply it 1000x, and put the mom in the middle of war-torn Ukraine and you just may know one iota of what prompted Sasha Denisova to write this play. This play’s mixture of the fantastic, the realistic, and its own self-awareness that it’s a play makes for a story that’s once in a lifetime.

Urnov had a Herculean task in front of him. How does one take the script’s grand themes, autobiography, and introspection and put a playwright’s brain onstage. In effect, Urnov was another translator in the mix. Every word, every line, every image had to be extrapolated out and placed just so on the stage in a way that brought the author’s struggle and the experiences of her mother to Philadelphia and livestreaming across the country. What does a “soviet childhood” mean? Through Urnov’s and Denisova’s common understanding, none of the humor of heartbreak was lost.

Denisova had the audacity to write something that was so deeply personal that (in theory) no one should have related to it. Yet, it was so universal that it reached out and grabbed us all. This was very specifically her story, no one could have told this story but her but not unlike the secret recipe for a cake we all enjoyed it. The recipe is every anecdote, every tear shed, every moment that we could not have lived ourselves. Yet it went through us and nourished us and filled us with a warm sense of love to stave off the cold.

Holum as Daughter had the unenviable job of being the ACTUAL playwright more simply the theatrical avatar of how the playwright saw herself. Holum’s words always set the tone for what tone the play was going to say next. Whatever was going to happen in the next three minutes, be it happy, sad, or funny, was going to be telegraphed by her acting. That is a hard order to fill but Holum carries it so well it feels like listening to your best friend at the bar, not a performer onstage.

We agree with Smiling who says within the world of the play that he not only has to play everyone, including President Biden, he has to push the set around between scenes. But hey he’s not God...oh wait never mind...Smiling is a man of many hats most of the time and was able to make each character fun, believable, and surreal enough to be funny.

The titular Mama has to live up to the reputation that the poster gives you on the way in, a no-nonsense lady with a cigarette in her hand and a fighting spirit. Mama is the beating heart of this play. Twyford has to be exaggerated enough to feel like the writer’s fantastical caricature of her mother but real enough to remind you of your own Mom. She is the embodiment of love and bad@$$ery that the world needs right now. Twyford understood the assignment and went above and beyond.

Maybe we’re just standing on our soapbox here but this felt like the perfect mix of in-person and digital theatre. It’s one thing to project prerecorded videos. It’s a whole other thing to livestream an actor onstage using a tablet while the play is happening. Not only that but projections of “mosquito drone” (you’ll know it when you see it) set the tone and build the world that we’re living in for the next 90 minutes.

This may be our neuro divergence talking but the light was able to get “loud” when it needed to for explosions and “quiet” for smaller times when it needed to tap us on the shoulder and tell us to look to the left or right. They used light a lot to direct our attention and keep our focus. Gulbranson knew how to use big flashes and little changes to great effect for this.

We’re always dubious about the use of a turntable in a play. Sometimes it screams “Hey we had the budget for this!” Each angle of the apartment setpiece was necessary to tell the story. In fact, the apartment is a bit of a Transformer (80's kids unite!) and opens up to create even more dynamics. Yet we also found ourselves looking at small details in the paint on the walls of the apartment and even spots on the floor. It’s one thing to make a huge statement piece. It’s another to remember the little details too.

We were most impressed with the design of Mama’s costume. Stack made Mama go from pretty Kyiv socialite to wartime curmudgeon in no time flat. Simple additions and subtractions could change a costume’s meaning or feel. This is a play where a single hat, an apron, or a pair of socks can change an entire costume and turn three performers into a cast of many.

This is the kind of play that critics, people like us, live for. It’s the kind of play where you’re taken from the funniest moments to the deepest tragedies but you’re buckled in and ready for more. It’s a play that’s completely new and foreign to you but you feel like you’ve been here before. It opens old wounds and helps you find the happy memories within. Right after laughing your head off, you can find yourself deeply sobbing or vice versa depending on who you are. This play brings as much closure as it does renew a call for action about the atrocities that are committed by murderous lunatics against Ukraine and elsewhere in the world. Right after giving a standing ovation and cheering for the performers Ricky turned to Dana and openly sobbed. Let’s pray and act for a time of world peace and harmony where we all know our mothers are safe and don’t need to know where the load-bearing walls are in the house.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, let's break down the hockey hullabaloo that just unfolded before our very eyes. Our beloved Ilo Pisara took on the Panamanian Guitars in what can only be described as a symphony of pucks and punishment – with us conducting the orchestra to a sweet tune of 10-3! First off, Teppo Winnipeg was out there looking like he stole Gretzky's hands overnight! Five assists? Two goals? The man was dishing out points like they were going out of style. With an offense rating through the roof at 100%, it seems his defense decided to take a nap—rating at 80%—but who needs defense when you're parting their net like Moses did the Red Sea? Konsta Terde must've thought we were playing basketball because he put up double digits all by himself! Ten points?! That left wing turned into a no-fly zone for any puck not escorted by him personally. And then there’s Yuri Tarde between those pipes; sure, letting three slip past isn't exactly brick-wall behavior but with an .800 save percentage... well, let’s say he stopped more shots than my Uncle Jerry at last call. Jani Saari deserves some love too—a faceoff phenom winning draws like it's Black Friday sales every day. Four goals plus game-winning swagger? Jani is serving captain clutch realness! Panamanian Guitars might need to retune after this one because we played them like fiddles on ice. Another win for Ilo Pisara keeps us hotter than hot sauce in Satan's pantry—and if history has taught us anything—it’s that momentum is key. So here’s to keeping victories more regular than fiber-induced bathroom breaks! Keep shredding ice and expectations—I expect nothing less from these gladiators in skates!

Story Pile: Summer Time Rendering

2022 was a kind of terrifying year for anime.

Terrifying in the scope, the variety and the general quality, mind you. It was still a year with a bunch of movies and continuations of things I don’t care about, and it was also a year in which the anime industry kept reeling after literal terrorism and the results of a pandemic slowdown. Still, the thing is, even when you take that into account and also the burnout and stress the anime producers are under, 2022 was a year with a selection of anime that would, in a less busy year, be considered the best anime released that year.

You doubt me? Well, consider that across 2022, we got heavy-hitter franchise installations Spy X Family, Demon Slayer, Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War, Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War, Ascendance Of A Bookworm and the final season of Attack On Titan. There were also some pretty remarkable releases in the queer media space, with a mainline yuri production The Executioner And Her Way Of Life pushing into the isekai franchise space and The Witch From Mercury taking the lead of probably the venerable anime franchise machine that is Gundam. Looking at the lighter, shorter series, things that didn’t need a big backing from a big studio to get out the door, we got shows all over the genre space like Ya Boy Kongming, Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie, My Dress Up Darling, Akiba Maid War, Fuuto PI, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Lycoris Recoil, Call Of The Night, Bocchi The Rock, Do It Yourself, Urusei Yatsuara, and oh yeah, did I mention Chainsaw Man up top because yeah, Chainsaw Man also came out in 2022.

That’s… one year. Any of those 21 series would be an all-star excellent show to be ‘the one great one’ of the year. For comparison, in 1993, when I think I can say I started really paying attention to anime (we called it Japanimation), there were twenty four anime series made at all.

And I bring this list to your attention, the scope, and the weight of that scope and hopefully also the number of highlighted links showing that hey, yeah, these aren’t just critically praised or noteworthy shows but shows I like, where I want to tell you about the anime that gets to be 22 on that list, and may, in my opinion, be the best one.

Summer Time Rendering is a 2022 anime based on the Shonen Jump+ Digital Manga series written and illustrated by Yasuki Tanaka who at least according to wikipedia has done nothing else. The TV adaptation is by OLM, long-standing anime industry juggernauts responsible for, amongst everything else, Inazuma Eleven, Yo-Kai Watch, Beyblade, Cardfight Vanguard, and, of course, the entire run of the Pokemon anime, amongst other less kid-oriented fare like Komi Can’t Communicate and Life With An Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into A Total Fantasy Knockout so we can mention an isekai genderswap anime as well, for the full bingo. As to what Summer Time Rendering is at its heart, is a mystery story, which makes it kind of challenging to talk about in a way that can both illuminate its virtues without dispelling some of the tension that people like to discover themselves, especially since one major component of the story is a time loop,

Bookshelf Briefs 5/25/22

In which Sean solos yet again.

HIRAETH -The End of the Journey-, Vol. 1 | By Yuhki Kamatani | Kodansha Manga (digital only) – This does not end up being quite as depressing as the warning at the start might indicate, but the warning is appreciated, as this book starts with a young woman trying to kill herself, and her suicidal thoughts are present throughout the volume. She meets a god who is dying, and is taking a tour of Japan (and being a bit of a brat about it), as well as a man who CAN’T die, and on their journey we get a lot of different perspectives. That said, as always with this author, if you’re only here to look at the lush, gorgeous art, you will not be disappointed either—even the panel composition is amazing. It’s absolutely not for everyone, but if you liked Our Dreams at Dusk this is a must-read. – Sean Gaffney

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You, Vol. 2 | By Rikito Nakamura and Yukiko Nozawa | Ghost Ship We add two more girls in this volume, and really the impressive thing about it is not how he keeps managing to convince each girl to go along with this, but the fact that they really do almost all get along. Hell, some of them may get along a little too well—if for some reason he can’t actually marry 100 girls, and they don’t all die, Hakari and Karane may be able to make things work. As for the new girlfriends, we have the stoic and intellectual one, and the mad scientist who mostly looks like a child one, which is hilarious even if it toes the line of offensiveness. That said, that’s one nasty cliffhanger. – Sean Gaffney

My Next Life As a Villainess Side Story: Girls Patch | By Various Artists | Seven Seas – This anthology asks the question: don’t you wish Bakarina was a yuri series? (There was an equivalent for the guys, but don’t expect Seven Seas to license that anytime soon.) A lot of the Western audience for the series was more into Mary, Sophia and Maria than any of the actual love interests—and indeed have abandoned the series for the most part after realizing it’s veering too het. That said, while this doesn’t have any weddings or alternate universes where Katarina suddenly gets it, it has lots of sweet scenes between the quartet, as well as a brief one with Anne, which is not really shown as romantic so it’s fine. It’s an anthology, so variable, but is mostly perfectly pleasant. – Sean Gaffney

Run on Your New Legs, Vol. 1 | By Wataru Midori| Yen Press – For the most part this is a very good story about a former star athlete who lost a leg finding that he can still compete with the help of prosthetics, even if it’s not soccer (his former sport). That said, I could not help but spend much of the first half of this book feeling a bit creeped out by the way he was sort of stalked and manipulated by the guy who is designing said prosthetics, who turns out to basically be a start-up trying to drum up work. Consent is given, but it doesn’t feel earned, if you know what I mean. Other than that, this is a strong sports manga with lots of past trauma to overcome, a guy who is being forced to reopen his world to other people, and some nifty art. – Sean Gaffney

Teasing Master Takagi-san, Vol. 14 | By Soichiro Yamamoto | Yen Press – The question on my mind as I read this volume of Takagi-san is essentially: what is the difference between this and a normal couple who go on dates? Honestly, the answer may actually be “normal couples aren’t together quite as much as these two.” Here we see Nishikata challenging Takagi to guess the number of steps to a shrine, not realizing the shrine is a famous couples’ shrine, so everyone but him knows already. They eat lunch together, and she offers to feed him. They coincidentally do a New Year’s shrine visit together. And, in the best chapter, we see Takagi, briefly jealous after Nishikata helps another girl, actually picking on him. She does apologize. He can’t see the difference. – Sean Gaffney
