Hello anon, I have a few questions:
The official tumblr account with the sprites seems to be deactivated or hidden, if this is just because I've been blocked I don't think I would make them because I want to respect boundaries and so forth.
If the account is hidden in general then I'd still like to be sure that the creators are okay with reposts of their works. If they are okay with reposts and have stated this publicly I would still need the sprites if you have a link to some.
Sorry for the confusion.

Gene mapper / Taiyo Fujii
Of erger.
Just the three of us? This was news to me. I wondered if we could do it alone, but if Yagodo could glean so from published information, his skills would be a big asset. 'A tough challenge then. Ask me anything you want. You have my full support. If we don't succeed, global agriculture could be set back a generation.' 'Set back a generation?' I looked from one to the other. 'You mean back to natural plants?' Yagodo's comment had an ominous ring. 'That's how it looks to me. Isn't it true, Takashi?' 'Mamory, I'm sorry. L&B's press releases for the investors use the same argument. I didn't want to put too much pressure on you, but that's what we're up against.' Kurokawa shook his head in resignation and launched into a summary of the mission and milestones of Mother Mekong's five-star project. SR06 was going to prove that distilled agriculture could actually help the environment and give farmers a sustainable business model. That made the certifications important. Oursourcing style sheet design to a freelancer and assigning responsibility to Thep at Mother Mekong to make the final site construction decisions was part of L&B's plan to assure the public and regulators that it was not going to monopolize control and keep all the profit.
Goeie scifi!

Oh he's so cute! :] I can relate to the shoes thing. I have no clue how you're supposed to clean them. Also Mamoru definitely has that sort of 'soccer player' energy. (I know because I played soccer as a child.) Thank you for sharing, friend! :]

I made the mistake of trying to unwind with an art video before bed. Got up to practice with the Gasa Gaya Line Brush, used a Jiro Matsumoto manga panel for reference, gave up on drawing the full body, and bam. Oh yeah, also colored with a Copic brush and Copic color set. 😎
I always admired styles like Taiyo Matsumoto and Mamoru Hosoda that I fought against drawing big eyes, but I always draw big eyes. Innately. So I'm just gonna lean into it from now on. Might try to work in those pretty Korean boy illustrations into my practice, cuz those drawings have perfect eyes that are still simplistic.
But in an ideal world, I'd still have a rough, sketchbook style like Jiro Matsumoto, early Taiyo Matsumoto, or Jillian Tamaki.

Anime Background Art Books Round Up ( 2020 Update )
Tumblr media
This post was first published in Oct 2012 and has been updated in 2020 to include more background art books since published.
More than just beautifully painted pictures of landscapes and skies, background art is an integral and crucial component of anime, setting the stage for the performance of all characters in the film. A skilfully painted background plate can really accentuate the mood and atmosphere of any given scene, at the same time elevating the aesthetic quality of the film.
Here’s a list of art books featuring the background art from various anime films that I highly recommend :
1) Memories Of The Sky – Makoto Shinkai
A compilation of plates from Makoto-san’s earliest short films like Memories Of A Distant Start, The Place Promised In Our Early Days, and his first animated feature 5 Centimetres. There’s A LOT to like in here.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
2) Tekkon Kinkreet White (Shiro) Book
Michael Aria’s anime rendition of Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga of the same name. The film is a dizzying display of art director Kimura Shinji’s astounding background art from start to finish, and is a must see for anyone remotely interested in anime, film or illustration.
Note : Two art books were published for Tekkon – White (Shiro) features the background art, while Black (Kuro) covers image boards and concept art. Both are excellent.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
3) Kazuo Oga Animation Artworks
A veteran background artist with Ghibli, Oga-san has created countless pieces of mesmerizing art for many of the studio’s most iconic films. In 2007 his solo Background Art Exhibition was held at the MOT and was exceptionally well received.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
4) Of Light & Darkness : Ogura Hiromasa Background Art Book
Dark and moody background plates are Ogura’s forte, as seen in his work for Mamoru Oshii’s films like Ghost In The Shell and Innocence, and Hiroyuki Okiura’s Jin-roh – The Wolf Brigade.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
5) The Background Art Of Yamamoto Nizo
Yet another Ghibli veteran, Yamamoto-san has also created background art for Madhouse’s hugely popular The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
6) The Art Of Steamboy
Art director Kimura Shinji (Tekkon Kinkreet) flexes his artistic muscles in Otomo’s epic Steamboy. While the film was not quite what we had hoped it’ll be, the staggering amount of gorgeous background art generated for this film is just mind-blowing.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
7) The Art Of Children Who Chase Lost Voices
Art book for Makoto Shinkai’s 2nd animated feature. Personally the film wasn’t to my liking, but the quality of the background art in this one is truly exceptional.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
8) The Background Art Of Wolf Children
I really enjoyed Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children, and this whopper of an art book is one of the best I’ve seen this year. While many of the background plates are still painted in traditional (2D) style, CG now plays a bigger and bigger role in anime films and the book elaborates on this as well.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
9) Garden Of Words – Makoto Shinkai Art Book
Makoto Shinkai’s animated short film Garden Of Words (言の葉の庭) is my favorite of all his works, in part because the story is set around the area of Shinjuku in Tokyo, an area where I used to hang out alot as a film student. This is not actually a proper “art of” book in that it showcases no concept art nor raw background plates, but the images still allow us to appreciate the lovely art that the filmmakers painted.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
10) Ping Pong Anime Complete Artworks
Masaaki Yuasa’s most excellent anime adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga Ping Pong is one of my favorite animation series in recent years. This art book features a good collection of the painterly, pastel colored background art plates seen in the film as well as colorscripts, character designs sheets and more.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
11) The Background Art Of The Boy And The Beast
The Boy And The Beast is Mamoru Hosoda’s follow up film after Wolf Children. While not exactly a dedicated background art book per se, The Boy And The Beast art book showcases a staggering amount of stunning background plates ( collated by scene and cut number ), featuring work from some top talent in the field like Kazuo Oga and Ono Hiroshi.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
12) Your Name – Makoto Shinkai Anime Background Art Book
Makoto Shinkai’s epic anime hit Your Name likely needs no introduction. Just like his previous art books for Lost Voices and Memories Of The Sky, this background art book for Your Name showcases a wealth of spectacular background art featured in the film. Pure eye candy.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
13) 100 Views – Yamamoto Nizo Background Art Book
This is actually a revised edition of The Background Art Of Yamamoto Nizo as listed above, published in 2018. It has expanded material and features more of the artist’s personal works too. Depending on which version is available to you, I would recommend this new edition if possible.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
14) Children Of The Sea Background Art Book
Studio 4 °C’s visually stunning anime adaptation of Daisuke Igarashi’s manga Children Of The Sea is made gorgeous in no small part thanks to background art director Kimura Shinji’s beautiful paintings. 250 pages of background art goodness.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here.
15) MFKZ Background Art Book
Yet another whopper background art book by Kimura Shinji, who served as art director on MFKZ (Mutafukaz/ムタフカズ), the 2017 adult animated science fiction film based on the comic series and the short film of the same name. Kimura-san’s vibrant and impossibly detailed background paintings of a colorful Miami-ish city is certainly one of the top visual highlights of the film.
Read the full review with more pictures from the book here. In addition to the books that I’ve listed above, all of the “Art Of” books by Ghibli also contain a substantial collection of background art created for each film. Take for example, the Art Of Arrietty, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo.
I also recommend the series of background art books published by Studio Kusanagi, here, here and here. When I was working on Freedom Studio Kusanagi painted background plates for us regularly and I was always impressed by the quality and speed of their turnovers.
I’m sure there must be other great background art books out there – if you know of any worth picking up, please share with the rest of us here. :] You might also be interested in these items :

I get a few asks asking about my art influences so thought I’d do a post where I talk about a few!
Tumblr media
Masaaki Yuasa! Yuasa has such a wide range of styles and they’re all so well thought out! All of his designs are super dynamic and expressive and it’s cool to see how he pushes cliches and ‘art rules’! He worked on a huge variety of films, shows, and short(s?) like Mind Game, Tatami Galaxy, Devilman Crybaby, Kaiba, Ping Pong, Happy Machine, Adventure Time etc!
Tumblr media
Mamoru Hosoda! I really really like Hosoda’s tone for storytelling and visual design! He worked on a huge chunk of the digimon series and movies and then directed stand alone films like summer wars and mirai! His films have such a specific and unique feel to them especially with masakatsu takagi’s music ahhhhh
Tumblr media
Anno Hideaki! I could write a mind numbingly boring essay and a half on evangelion ;;;;; but visually i love how organic the eva mechs are! and the backgrounds! compositions! wowow!!!
Tumblr media
Norio Matsumoto! matsumoto did most of the cool fight scenes for the naruto series and movies! I have full sketchbooks of reverse boards of his scenes ahh they’re really story driven and the shape language is mind blowingly creative and amazing!!
Tumblr media
Hiroyuki Imaishi! Imaishi has such a distinct style and I can’t process how he makes such dynamic and loud drawings ;; it’s also super cool to see how much he uses black?
Tumblr media
Night on The Galactic Railroad! Absolutely one of my favorite films! It’s a quiet and surreal film about death and mourning and had a HUGE impact on japanese pop culture (the train scene in spirited away, the train scene in animal crossing new leaf, basically every train scene in anime and japanese video games)
Tumblr media
Tekkonkinkreet! (Taiyō Matsumoto) taiyo matsumoto’s comics are super super good but oh gosh his designs and story + the anim team + plaid is so next level fhdjskafhsa
Tumblr media
RPG maker (horror? surreal?) games!  I didn’t really play games until college so most of my influences are from animation but I picked up a few RPG maker games freshman year and they had a HUGE impact on my stuff! I think the simplicity of rpg maker games leave more to the imagination so they feel creepier than realistic high poly horror games for me! my favorites are OFF and IB!

Japan Box Office: My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission Makes Its 2nd Place Debut
My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes Mission, the third feature film in the My Hero Academia anime franchise based on Kohei Horikoshi's sci-fil action shonen manga, was released in 320 theaters across Japan on August 6, 2021, and ranked second in its opening weekend, earning slightly less than Fast & Furious 9 (Japanese title: Wild Speed Jet Break), which also had its opening weekend in Japan.
The ninth installment of the world-wide blockbuster franchise earned 553 million yen (5 million USD) on 352,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday in Japan, while World Heroes Mission made 454 million yen (4.1 million USD) on 335,000 admissions. Still, its first four-day gross of 940 million yen (8.5 million USD) was a huge 200.2 percent of that of the previous second film in 2019, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising. If the momentum continues, there is a high possibility that it will become the top-grossing film in the history of the MHA anime franchise.
In its fourth weekend, Mamoru Hosoda's Ryu to Sobakasu no Hime / BELLE lost its first place position for the first time and fell to third place. The film has grossed four billion yen (36.17 million USD) on 2.92 million admissions, and is expected to be the director's second top-grossing film soon, surpassing Wolf Children (2012 /4.22 billion yen).
The live-action film adaptation of Ken Wakui's Tokyo Revengers manga ranked fifth in its fifth weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 3.2 billion yen (28.94 million USD) on 2.42 million admission, becoming the third top-grossing Japanese live-action film of this year so far.
Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity - Grand Temple of Time: Solomon, the latest anime film adaptation of the Fate/Grand Order smartphone game, ranked eighth in its second weekend, three positions down from last weekend. The 94-minute film had earned 160 million yen (1.44 million USD) so far. The anime series' previous film Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot Wandering; Agateram made 220 million yen (1.98 million USD) from its domestic run in May 2020.
Weekend box office Top 10 in Japan (August 7-8, 2021)
 (ticket sales basis)
    1 (new). "Fast & Furious 9" - 1.06 billion yen 2 (new).
2 (new). "My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes Mission" - 940 million yen
 3 (1). "BELLE" - 4 billion yen
4 (2). "Crayon Shin-chan: Shrouded in Mystery! The Flowers of Tenkazu Academy"
