PHOTOSHOOT: FOAM MAGAZINE
If there was a way to sum up the "Electra Heart" era in fashion — I think this shot did the job
On July 7th, 2012 Marina Diamandis was photographed by JUCO for Foam magazine in Los Angeles. Glam by Amy Chance, hair by Aaron Light and manicure by Michelle Saunders.
Tumblr media
Simple as it may be, this is precisely the look, the beauty, and the styling I would have selected for this shot. Powerful in its stark simplicity.
For our first look, she wore this lime-colored slip dress ($295.00 - sold out) with contrasting black lace details from Emerson's Fall/Winter 2012 collection.
Tumblr media
Jeweller Erica Courtney seems to have been assigned as the official bauble provider for this editorial, as Marina dons several of her pieces such as these white pearl, yellow-gold and diamond drop earrings ($31,700.00 - sold out).
Tumblr media
For the next set of photos, Marina is posing on a bed while wearing Aussie label SHAKUHACHI's mint-green and pink lace block cut-out dress ($525.00 - sold out).
Tumblr media
As in jewelry, the Greek-Welsh beauty rocked a pair of Jared Jamin's green flower and pearl drop earrings ($220.00 - sold out), along with Erica Courtney's platinum and diamond white pearl fancy charm necklaces ($10,000.00 - sold out) and 18k gold and diamond London blue topaz Zoey ring ($7,200.00 - sold out).
Tumblr media
Marina completed her girly ensemble with these to-die-for metallic green penny loafer pumps ($275.00 - sold out) by Fornarina.
Tumblr media
This retro-inspired look includes a vintage beaded and fringed cream pencil dress which was paired with the stylist's own sheer silk scarf and jewelry by Erica Courtney which included the Super Cool gold coin charm bracelet ($20,000.00 - sold out) and Pillow Top ring ($19,000.00 - sold out).
Tumblr media
My favorite look of this editorial includes Marina wearing these apple-green and purple cut-out lenses – fruit of the collaboration from Prabal Gurung and Linda Farrow for Prabal's Spring/Summer 2012 runway!
Tumblr media
I wasn't able to ID her outfit down but Marina wears yet another stunning design by Erica Courtney. On her, we can spot a blue topaz version of these romantic chandelier earrings with diamonds.
Tumblr media
For the penultimate look, Marina posed outside while wearing her stylist's own beaded vintage cardigan on top of a vintage white silk blouse, and vintage grey leather daisies-embroidered belt sourced at Modern Vintage Today.
Her white and black polka-dot organza circle skirt ($450.00) was created by emerging designer House of Ronald.
Tumblr media
This very feminine look was further enhanced with the Serefina Dagger stud earrings ($50.00 - sold out) and her aforementioned Fornarina pumps.
Tumblr media
For the final look, things get bright and pink with this SHAKUHACHI neon-pink poplin blouse ($263.00 - sold out) which Marina paired with a vintage rose lace pencil skirt from Hot Mess Vintage.
Tumblr media
The jewelry for this look is by none other than Erica Courtney and featured the namesake Erica diamond stud earrings ($11,000 - sold out) and Shayne pearl and diamond pendant necklace ($44,000 - sold out).
Tumblr media
Last but definitely not least, Marina completed the look with these Kurt Geiger Spring/Summer 2012 white and pink perforated leather platform wedges!

Electra Heart: Character of a Sad Girl
It has always been a stereotype that teenagers feel intense emotions, especially sadness, giving them a reputation of being, “moody.” Coming into cultural prominence in the early 2010s, a music based online fandom calling themselves, “Sad Girls,” or “The Sad Girls Club.” The community surrounding these musicians was infamous for being a very young fanbase. The sad girl community comes together to share with one another in their negative feelings, bonding over the emotions they all share. It seems like they find comfort in their numbers, and the emotions they all share.
The “Sad Girl,” online movement prominently features female figures who are not afraid to act out on their negative emotions, and is beautiful because of her sadness, not just in spite of it. It is difficult to simply define the sad girl, because she takes many forms and can be defined in different ways for different people. Many may know the most mainstream figureheads of the Sad Girl community, such as Lana Del Rey, Melanie Martinez, and Marina Diamandis.
Marina Diamandis is the headliner for past band “Marina and the Diamonds.” Her character, “Electra Heart,” is the star of their album of the same name. Released in 2012, Electra Heart embodies sadness in both her character and her musical stylings. She focuses on the female perspective when portraying her exaggerated character, and is able to connect with her audience’s deep rooted inner feelings. As Marina plays a character within this monumental sad girl album, this raises the question of the effectiveness of irony within this era of sad girls on tumblr. Is it possible to effectively criticize the broader culture through the character of a sad girl? While Marina and her team certainly knew that she was being ironic, it is unclear if her fans always understood the message she was trying to put out. Personally, I was a very young fan of Marina during her Electra Heart era. From firsthand experience, I can definitely say that her sense of irony was lost on me. Although her music as Electra Heart is satire, is the impact of her art aligning with her goals? Does embodiment of a sad girl character achieve goals of making cultural change and connecting with people in positive and meaningful ways? Many of her fans seem to have idolized the character and music in its entirety. Just because it is ironic and has intentional meaning behind the music, does not mean the impact of her work is any different from that of her peers making similar styles of music, not playing a character.

I feel like a lot of Marina fans only talk about Electra Heart, and maybe Family Jewels on this site. Some of my favorite albums pretty much ever are Froot and Ancient Dreams. While I don’t think Electra is bad it isn’t really my style (a bit too trad pop for my taste). I feel like it also undermines Marina’s new era. She has moved on, she has grown physically and mentally she was in her 20s. I didn’t know she made anything past electra heart when I first started listening to her. I think a lot of posts about her are very female manipulator, girl bossy. This may just be me being salty that Froot isn’t talked about more but whatever.

Cast Interviews From 1986 vs. 2016
So, I’ve found a podcast that’s been interviewing various Cats cast members and superfans. Most of the interviews come from the cast of the Broadway Revival, but there are also several interviews from US Tour III which went from 1986 to 1988. So we’ve got a bit of both old and new. Here’s what I’ve learned about how things have changed over the years and why the Broadway Revival is such a confused mess:
In the interviews of US Tour III cast members, it seemed like everyone was told the story of the play and had a pretty clear idea of what was going on. Some actors were given backstories for their characters, but the amount of detail varied. Actors cast as Munkustrap and Tugger were told that their characters were brothers and the sons of Old Deuteronomy. Actors cast as Demeter were given a full backstory for the character. However, Grizabella’s story remained vague. Bombalurina, Mistoffelees, and Sillabub also had no confirmed backstories, and most of their characters were improvised during rehearsals. Also, since this tour was from 1986-1988, a lot of cast members don’t remember a lot of what they were told. It’s been a while.
Out of the backstory and character information provided, Demeter’s was the most consistent. She was kidnapped by Macavity, escaping shortly before the events of the play. She’s an outsider to the tribe, but she knows Bombalurina and stays close to her. Bombalurina also had some experience with Macavity, but she enjoyed it more than Demeter did. This lines up with what Jacob Brent said about Demeter in the 1998 version.
Some character dynamics are different from more modern versions. Alonzo is Demeter’s love interest, as was typical with Broadway-based productions. Also, in most productions, Alonzo doesn’t get along with Tugger, but he’s a fan of him in this version.
Outside of Alonzo, it was made perfectly clear that Mistoffelees was played as a full adult, the same age as Munkustrap. The actor who played him throughout the tour, Randy Slovacek seemed to have made up most of Misto’s characterization in that production by himself. Misto was friends with Grizabella in the past and wasn’t upset by whatever she did to upset the others. When she first appears, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, taking the place of Coricopat and Tantomile, who were cut for the tour, run up to her and try to chase her away. Misto calls them off, but Munkustrap won’t let him do anything else to help her and he respects his authority too much to try anything.
The interviews of the Broadway Revival cast tell a very different story of what was going on behind the scenes. Apparently, they were rushed for time and there weren’t as many rehearsals before the show as there usually are. That, combined with the new choreography meant that nobody really knew what they were doing. Munkustrap and Tugger were confirmed to be siblings, but very little backstory information was given outside of that. The few cast members who worked with Gillian Lynne seemed to have a better idea of what was going on with their characters. Andy Blankenbuehler was still figuring things out and wasn’t able to offer similar clarity. The few times anyone was told anything, it was usually by Trevor Nunn.
Basically, Nunn and Lynne invented Cats, and nobody else seems to know how the fuck any of it works.
Tyler Hanes and Sara Jean Ford knew each other before being cast and they came up with a lot of backstory for their characters, which everyone else got drawn into. Ford played Jellylorum as the same age as Tugger. Since the actors are best friends, so are the characters, even though that makes little sense with their personalities. Jennyanydots, Bombalurina, Demeter, and Grizabella were in that same age range as well. It appears that nobody was anywhere between Munkustrap and Old Deuteronomy in age, for some reason. Jenny and Skimble are a couple in this version, so Skimble’s probably also in this group. They have kittens together. Electra and Rumpleteazer are among them, though nothing was said about Mungojerrie. The merge with Coricopat and Tantomile in the US Tour implies that they’re twins in that version. In the Broadway Revival and the tour based on it, they’re apparently unrelated.
Grizabella ended up with a far more detailed backstory, all made up by the cast. She’s Jellylorum’s sister and she stole a man away from her and Jelly never loved again. None of the kittens are Jelly’s, though she’s sort of the nanny to all of them. Griz also had some sort of affair with Tugger and broke his heart, which is why he doesn’t do commitment. Then, Griz ran off with Macavity, got dumped for Bombalurina, and then she got dumped for Demeter who decided that Macavity was bad news pretty early on and ditched him. The relationship was abusive, but no one mentioned a kidnapping. After leaving Macavity, Griz was no longer welcome in the tribe, even though Bomba and Demeter were because Reasons. Forgetting that these characters are not human, she then got addicted to drugs, was driven to prostitution to support her drug habit, had a bunch of kids, and then left those kids to be raised by Jenny, who resents her for it. Nobody says which kittens are Grizabella’s. Portions of this backstory were used in the 2019 movie.
Also, I can say that some of the characterization issues with Tugger were, in fact, a direct result of the choreography changes. Tyler Hanes wanted to play up the sexuality of the character in a way that the new choreography didn’t allow. If Gillian Lynne’s choreography had been used for the number, Tugger’s characterization probably would’ve turned out very different, but the changes meant that what Hanes knew about the character, and how the audience perceived the character, were altered by the new choreography putting emphasis on vanity instead of sexuality.
So, that’s the story so far. Compared to at least one early production, the Broadway Revival was rushed and poorly thought out. The actors were given little information and left to fend for themselves, and they prioritized their bonds with their irl friends over what made sense for their characters. Interviews of cast members from both the revival and the following tour reference Andy Blankenbuehler as the one who had all the information, who the cast looked to for instructions. But, he had no idea what he was doing and couldn’t really help them.
Most of the problems can be traced to Blankenbuehler not knowing what he was doing and never really figuring it out. Though, some blame has to be placed on the cast who, left to their own devices, had a lot of bad ideas. Hanes and Ford in particular, though it was good that someone was trying to take charge, created a bit of a mess. None of Jellylorum’s character resembles any other Jellylorum characterization I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t even come across clearly on stage. The young cast all seemed to struggle with the idea of playing older characters and nobody told them that they couldn’t age them down. The generation gap between Tugger and Jenny and Jelly is character information that’s now completely lost on the audience. You need older characters disapproving of Tugger to show that he’s a controversial figure to the tribe, not just an annoyance to Munkustrap.
But, some of the worst characterization problems were not entirely the fault of the cast. As I mentioned before, Tugger’s characterization was changed by the choreography. Grizabella had already been aged down by her redesign. Since Demeter’s kidnapping backstory wasn’t explained, this affected how Demeter was portrayed. Her sympathy for Grizabella came from having been on that side of town as Macavity’s prisoner and seeing the condition she was in. Without that backstory, Kim Faure may have not known that Demeter was supposed to have sympathy for Grizabella and interpreted her part differently. This was the result of unclear direction.
What We’ve Learned Today:
1. In the 1980s, Mistoffelees was, in fact, played as older than Jacob Brent played him in the VHS.
2. Munkustrap and Tugger (and not Mistoffelees) have pretty much always been the sons of Old Deuteronomy.
3. The backstory Jacob Brent gave for Demeter was the standard backstory for the character well before the VHS was filmed.
4. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer were considered twins in the 1980s and most likely continued to be seen as such until the revival era, though I haven’t exactly checked in with every single production.
5. The Broadway Revival was a behind the scenes and nightmare and it’s mostly Blankenbuehler’s fault.
6. Gillian Lynne wrote Cats. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote a concept album.
7. There are no middle-aged cats in the 2016 revival. I think Sara Jean Ford started it.
8. The idea that Grizabella’s backstory involved Macavity started with the 2016 cast improvising.
9. Kim Faure’s Demeter was most likely OOC due to a removal or lack of explanation of backstory.
10. Sometimes it’s okay to do things the same way they’ve been done before.

Love + Fear: the maturing of a pop star
Marina, aka. Marina and the Diamonds, is a very particular artist, who has had a progression in her career that is not expected for someone who is considered a pop star. A very extensive analysis could be made about her lyrics, the style she created as a new subgenre of idol, her art and her aesthetics, but on this occasion I want to focus on her maturation process, which I think is a very accurate reflection of what it's like to grow up and become an adult.
For this I want to compare 2 of her albums, with about 7 years between them, "Electra Heart" and "Love + Fear". When it comes to talk about the Marina and the Diamonds era, the peak of her popularity and style was "Electra Heart", an album where there is a character that represents the opposite of what the artist was, a cynical, manufactured, anguished, defiant and empty character, with songs that represent intense stereotypes and a childish look at adult problems. The artist herself has defined this stage of her career as a search for ego, an attempt to fit in the pop scene, the creation of this persona to reach a certain level of fame, and she achieved this and much more, she became an icon. If we make parallels with personal growth, this album represents adolescence very well, when you try to fit in among your peers, changing and adopting a rebellious attitude, without knowing well who you are. I think that even at Marina's age, 27 at that time, you still have this struggle to know where you are going and what to do with your life, and it is notorious the conflict she had, with which a whole generation felt represented.
On the other hand, "Love + Fear" is the album that sealed the transformation of Marina. In addition to the change of her stage name, there was a change in the message that now her music gives, since there is no longer a character, it is no longer necessary to be part of the pop stars of the scene where she emerged, she could be genuine with her audience and with herself. "Love + Fear" is an album with a variety of themes, but with a constant tone of vulnerability, and above all with a human message with an adult perspective, that concerns social, political and relational problems. The maturity with which these themes are explored on this album is a clear example of Marina's growth, her style and her purpose writing music, might have a connection with the fact that she had turned 34, and had already chosen her path and the message she wanted to share to the world.
I feel that Marina is different in several ways, but her artistic maturity is where the most evolution you can find. She may not even be as popular as she was back in the days of "Electra Heart", but at least you can see that she is being more authentic now than when she performing it.

Slight rant:
I get being annoyed with Marina after paying literally hundreds of $ for VIP tickets and then having most of the VIP perks being cancelled without reimbursements. I get not being satisfied with the merch this era. I get that certain fans may not like the new albums and Marina’s new work.
But what I don’t get? Going online and making lots of assumptions about Marina’s character because you’re unsatisfied or disappointed. Like, we don’t know her. You can’t call someone shallow or arrogant bc you didn’t like their merch. For one, do we even know how much involvement she has in all of that?
I saw ppl saying that she didn’t care about her fans anymore bc she hasn’t been staying as long after shows and stuff and I just--Y’all know the pandemic’s still here, right? She can’t interact with fans as much right now, but I’ve seen her taking photos and stuff after shows from a distance. I don’t see a problem with her following Covid restrictions, and I’m certainly not going to accuse her of not caring about her fans anymore for doing so.
There are very valid things to criticize Marina for, but assuming things about her based on very small pieces of information from her online presence is not it.
And don’t get me started on the people who bang on about EH all the time. Like yes, it was a great album. It’s beautiful. But it’s not Marina. It’s Electra. Marina has every right to create the music SHE wants. And you don’t have to like it, but some of us do, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I honestly feel like some of y’all aren’t even fans of Marina, bc I always see the same people on Reddit & Instagram nitpicking everything she does and talking abt how great Electra Heart is like...

Repost, don’t reblog! Tag six muns you would like to get to know better!
Tumblr media
Name: Y’all can call me Dex
Nickname: N/A
Faceclaim: Sherilyn Fenn
Pronouns: She/Her
Birthday: May 6
Aesthetics: Whatever the hell Marina Diamondis was doing in the Electra Heart era,,,bubblegum pop, pink, glitter, too sweet cakes, a hoard of shirtless male models in showers, wanting love but not being able to be emotionally available??? It’s all my jam
Favorite muse(s) you’ve written: Didi mostly because she’s my oldest and most developed(?) character but also I have so much fun writing Lázaro, Iona, Beatrix, Harrison, Kidd, Leslie— okay, you get it, I like all my ocs but there are certain qualities in each one I get to flex plus some of them I feel I’ve really hit the nail on the head in terms of a very interesting believable character. Like Lázaro, for instance, is such a fun and funny character that has a sense of humor very close to mine so it’s very easy and entertaining to write him!
What inspired you to take on your current muse(s): OOF, well, all my muses can be categorized by either being inspired by and directly based on a very specific character (i.e; Viola, Anton, Debbie), inspired more by the vibe a character or movie/show brings (i.e; Chet, Beatrix, Leslie), inspired by mythology that I personally find very interesting and would like to build out into modern times (i.e; Ayumu, Iona, Thoth), or is just someone who grew in the recesses of my mind and wanted out (i.e; Didi, Jasper, Lázaro).
What are your favorite aspects of your current muse(s): If we’re going with Queen Bee Didi, then it’s honestly just her confidence and ability to just not accept the consequences to her actions. I, personally, find this hilarious and I will make fun of her for it every day of my life, but it is rather astounding that Didi is certainly intelligent enough to know that being agreeable and attempting to work with people can get her farther in life and she actively refuses unless it suites her at the time. You don’t like it? You get mad at her because she was acting like an ass, which is completely fair and valid? She’s taking her shoe off to fling it at your head because she doesn’t care. Her life has been threatened multiple times due to her mouth and she just continues! Terrible girl!
What’s your biggest inspiration when it comes to writing: I have certainly learned so many great writing techniques from my rp partners, like you guys rock and are so amazing tbh! I don’t take inspiration from anywhere else really, mostly because I’m not...like writing is not actually an active hobby for me? Like I don’t consider myself a writer, like I continue threads to progress the characters and do fun stuff with my friends and the actual...way in which I write things honestly means nothing to me. I am not trying to get better, I am simply trying to get funnier and more ridiculous.
Favorite types of threads: Slice of life? I think? I just like domestic living and everyday friendly shenanigans and silly, ridiculous plots. Like anything that could conceivably happen in a Scooby Doo special is on the table. I like light-hearted and fun and I think I do those types of dialouge best?? I do lots of crime/supernatural stuff too because so many of my muses fall into those categories, but even then I still try to add as much humor as I can because life, even for crime bosses and serial killers and aliens, is just pretty funny. And of course, I like shippy, fluffy things...it’s just sweet. Let em smooch and support each other and hold hands,,,wtf
Biggest struggle in regards to your current muse: I struggle a lot when my characters have traits I cannot ever fabricate, which you think I would simply avoid and not give my characters those traits but I’m a dum-dum. For example, Jasper is a certified genius and writing him to sound more intellectual is very hard for me. Opaline is also very smart and poised, which is difficult as well. Thoth and Penjani are literally meant to know the future and writing fake prophesies is a LOT harder than is sounds! Yasmin’s ability to strike up a conversation and keep someone on the line is also fairly hard for me, seeing I am the exact opposite of an extrovert! But I do try my best! :’3

i was on the marina reddit recently and i saw this post talking abt how froot was marina's sort of peak? idk it's debatable and depends on preference i suppose. i think that electra heart/froot were mostly the fan favorite eras. however, some people may think she peaked then, and maybe with popularity? but i think she peaked with love+fear just with how she's really at peace with her life and happy. on another note, i believe M5 is going to get more recognition and will be her peak. from what we've heard with IDWLIAMWA, Pink Convertible, and Purge the Poison, i feel like she's expressing herself in a new way and is executing it flawlessly.

what are some songs, albums, or artists that you have a strong attachment to?
AHHhHHH omg this is a loaded question because I can go on forever for music (and also thank you for sending me a message that isn’t about lingerie or my face lmao)!!!! I’m going to include some links because I love to be able to share music with people! These are in no particular order – just in order of me thinking about them.
Hollow Knight soundtrack. Christopher Larkin did an AMAZING job composing this soundtrack – and the game is amazing as well (one of the few games, in addition to Shadow of the Colossus, that makes me cry when I think about the ending). My favorite track on it is City of Tears. Check it out!
A lot of the songs and instrumental pieces from the original 1990′s Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon was my dang childhood and inspired me in a lot of things. Some of my favorite tracks:
Instrumental: Princess no tame ni…, Sailor Uranus and Neptune theme, sadness, otome kokoro, holy grail, eternal no ai
Songs: Moon Revenge, Kaze mo sora mo, kitto, Moonlight Densetsu, Senshi no Omoi, Ai dake ga dekiru koto, Ai no Senshi,
Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The first time I heard this song, I was 18 and working my part-time job in a cutlery shop at the mall. Manager let me listen to whatever music I wanted when I did the store openings on the weekend, so I’d always listen to the classical music station. This piece came on and I was so moved that I sped home to download it on Napster and then find a physical copy of it on CD at Tower Records so I could listen to it on repeat for a month.
Marina & the Diamonds “Electra Heart” album. This got me through a particularly bad breakup and I listened to it several times a day. I loved her entire concept for the album and all the art that went into the promotional videos for it. I have a few characters on WoW that are Marina references. Some of my favorite tracks are: Starring Role, Valley of the Dolls, Fear and Loathing, Radioactive … I’m pretty sure at least 10% of my tumblr posts in 2012/13 were Marina-inspired. Such a good era.
The Beatles Eleanor Rigby. I grew up a Beatles fan because my mom was – she had all the vinyls, a bunch of memorabilia.. etc. Something about this song (And the entire Revolver album) gets to me.
WHAM! Last Christmas and Aqua’s Barbie Girl – these are two songs that I have always, and will always, sing my heart out at karaoke.
Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster album. I’m pretty sure that I did a million views alone on that Bad Romance song. Still one of my all-time favorites. Her Born This Way album means a lot to me too, because I listened to it a lot in Mists of Pandaria and that’s probably when I had the most fun w/ my friends and guldies in that game.
Mew - Repeaterbeater is probably one of my top songs from them. My ex (with whom I am still best of friends) introduced me to the band when we started dating in 2009 and like, I felt like I had missed out on life by not hearing of this amazing Danish band til then. I have about 20 CDs/albums from them – a lot of overseas limited prints and hard to find stuff. I really adore this band, and missing their show in SF due to the stomach flu in 2010(?iirc) is one of my biggest regrets. Comforting Sounds, Apocalypso, Am I Wry? No, and Satellites are also in my top songs from them.
The band 30 Seconds to Mars (at least, their A Beautiful Lie) holds a place in my heart because I listened to this a lot during my emo years and played this album a lot while PVPing in Lineage2 and also to and from classes. I’ve probably seen this band the most live – in two different countries as well! I have heard some problematic things about Jared Leto in the past few years that has kind of tarnished my love for the music, but it’s still an album that evokes a lot of emotion for me.
Poe - Haunted. She was one of the first performers I saw at a small venue for the 21+ crowd at a bar up in Orangevale (called The Boardwalk). I thought she was so cool, and bought her most recent album when we saw her. A lot of people may recognize her Hey Pretty song though. (Side note, first ever concert I attended was the Family Values Tour in 2001 w/ my friends in high school –  Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Static-X, and Deadsy played.)
Honestly, anything by Patrick Wolf. LOVE HIM. Such a talented musician. Reminds me of one of my closest friends who introduced me to his music. One of my favorite songs by him is Hard Times. His acoustic album Sundark and Riverlight was also amazing, as was the version of The Libertine from it!
Röyksopp - What Else is There? Karin Dreijer Andersson (The Knife/Fever Ray) has haunting vocals and it pairs so well w/ the music. I pretty much love most of Röyksopp’s stuff, but this song in particular reminds me of a friend I lost contact w/ over a decade ago.
Kings of Convenience - I’d Rather Dance with You. I’m sorry, but this is probably one of the best songs of all time. And, yes, this song was one of autoplay songs on my Myspace forever ago, lmao. Erlend Øye is literally so cool and you will never be as cool as him ok?
Mystery Skulls - Ghost. Man oh man. I remember listening to this on repeat while raiding cuz I was being emo over some guy LMAOOO. But I still really love this song, and the band is awesome as well! I’ve gotten a few of my friends (and my mom!!) into Mystery Skulls! Also — I’M PRETTY SURE ONE OF MY FRIENDS HERE ON TUMBLR WAS THE ONE WHO LINKED ME THIS SONG AND TOLD ME TO CHEER UP.
Deadmau5 - Ghosts n Stuff  2009 was a really good year for me personally, and also a lot of great music was filling my ears that year, including the For Lack of a Better Name album with this track on it. I love Pendulum, so having Rob Swire pair up on this track w/ Deadmau5, to me, was AHHHHmazing.
Janet Jackson - Velvet Rope. A really great song and it had a lot of personal meaning to me back in high school / college. I have always been a huge Janet fan and this came from one of my favorite albums of hers.
Gotye - Heart’s a Mess. I know a lot of people associate him with the popular track Somebody That I Used to Know w/ Kimbra, it’s a great track, don’t get me wrong, but this song is my favorite from him. Another song I listened to frequently through a breakup. I love Gotye’s very Peter Gabriel-esque vocals.
I could actually keep writing for like…. another hour but I will save you guys that and just end it here. Let’s just say I am a VERY auditory person

Celebration Day 3 : VIP Edition
Part 2 Here!
Funk Soldiers Panel
Shelby J
Kat Dyson
Xavier Taplin
Joey Rayfield
Kip Blackshire
About Last Night... (The Prince on the Big Screen event)
A lot of reherasal
Kirk organized everyone, got the materials out
Biggest challenge was that there were a lot of performers who worked with P at different times so the arrangements of the songs were often different. Hard to sync up with the show or pick the right one to use at first
Shelby said it was hard not to turn and look at him on the screen
The fludidity of the performance came with experience because they knew what P expected of them musically
Kat said “having him in my ear floated me back to my time with him” The instructions he gave inside of the performance still applied
Joey noted that he better understood the difference between just playing and performance from his time with Prince
“I almost forgot he wasn’t there”
Kat Dyson Origin Story (Guitar)
Recommended by Sheila E. Kat and Rhonda Smith met Sheila while demoing gear at an industry show. Sheila asked for their music as she had an idea to do an all girl band at the time. She got sick and gave their info to P. P took them both on.
Their audition was a four hour jam session in 96. P asked Kat “How much of my material do you know...and how much did you buy?”
Her favorite P music are the soundtracks, especially Batman and her favorite songs are Joy of Repetition and Question of You.
She and Rhonda did an arrangement for Question of You for him.
Xavier Taplin Origin Story (Organ)
Played with and was reccomend by Gouche, another NPG member
Audition was P on Bass and Job Blackwell on Drums. They played 777-9311 and P had him solo for 60 bars. He fell back into the groove and P told him to keep going...fell back into the groove again...and P told him to keep going. P put his bass down, walks over to  Xavier, and stands “uncomfortably close for 15 seconds just looking at me” he then says “We’re going to have a lot of fun.”
Joey Rayfield (Trombone)
Gets a call from Adrian Crutcfield about an audition in Charolette North Carolina. Gets PDF of a chart for Xtraloveable and realizes it’s for Prince
They have a Skype audition.
Time passes and he randomly got an email with a Delta ticket to Minneapolis. He quit his job and left for Paisley.
At first played on Andy Allo’s Supeconductor sessions.
Story : during a rehearsal P slowly walks up to the stage and says “You and Ida go play ping pong and if you win, I’ll play you. Joey wins and plays Prince. Joey’s in his dress shoes though and is slipping and sliding everywhere. P stops the game, moves a rug to be under Joey and says “I ain’t got no insurance.”
Story from Kat : I played basketball with him. Nobody told me not to block his shot. The game was over after that.
Kip : I was playing with him in the Daisy Chain video.
Kip Blackshire Origin Story (Vocals)
Morris Hayes invited him to a Carlos Sananta show and Jam session at Paisley. Kip absently playing basketball. Hears a “clang” (P dropping his guitar). P comes over and squares up with Kip. Kip passes P the ball, and P checks him hard in the stomach with it. Kip says he isn’t dressed to play and P tells him to come back the next day to play for real. The next day they play a 2 on 2 game. Kirk/Prince vs. Morris/Kip.
Was cleaning up in the bathroom and absently singing. P overhears and invites him to sing with them in the studio. P asks him if he knows Little Red Corvette and Kip says “I wasn’t allowed to listen to you growing up.” Instead P played guitar and Kip answered his licks with his voice. He was invited to join the band and the first song he sang on was Undisputed from Rave.
Shelby J Origin Story (Vocals)
Audition for Larry G’s band. Got in and was at 3121 doing a rehearsal. Kept being told to re-sing Higher Ground. It was P asking.
Was singing I Can’t Stand the Rain during a show. Crowd goes wild and she thought she was “DOING IT!” turns out P had come on stage behind her and was plugging up his guitar to join them. He came up to her mic and sang cheek to cheek with her for that song.
Was in Walmart getting supplies at home when she got invited to sing at one of his shows NYE. From there she was asked to join the band and their next gig was the Superbowl.
Arrangement Panel with Michael B Nelson
Had done work with Micheal Bland. There was an idea for a warm up group early 90′s. Dave and Kathy Jenson with Michael B Nelson, Sonny, and Tommy B made up a 5 piece band. They recorded some tracks and sent it to P. P told them to go to a Carmen Electra rehearsal to be filmed. Time passes asked to come to the soundstage at Paisley...saw pedal boards set up P was there! NPG was very tight at this time so P just held up a signal and they started into Madhouse 4. The horns were shocked for a moment then fell in (this was their audition). They jammed for 6 hours then recorded for the first time that same day....Sexy MF? (This may be wrong...he mentioned that they recorded for the first time that day, then a moment later said the first thing they recorded was Sexy MF as part of a different story so...take that how you will)
Told to get their passports together. They joined him on the Diamonds and Pearls tour
There were 11 semi trucks and 110 people in the entourage for the D&P tour. Their first stop with him was Tokyo
Hornheads was formulated as a horns only group since they were on with P and couldn’t play with anyone else, they just made a mini group to keep their chops up during down time. Mike Nelson wrote the tunes and they have 3 albums.
“Even when he was giving you a hard time, he’s just pushing you”
Q: What was it like during the 90′s? Every office was filled. He gave you exactly what you needed to fufill a task. You didn’t ask for additional questions...you had to trust yourself and know that he trusted you to use your creativity wisely.
Prince preferred Duke Ellington’s style of horns
P would send Mike tapes of a lead line and melody and Mike would add horn parts.
Mike did Black Muse, new Xtraloveable, When She Comes, Groovy Potential, Morning Papers and more (He’s been around for about 25 years)
Percentage of things recorded to released of the work Mike did. 50%
He co-wrote Billy Jack Bitch. While they were working on something, Mike played P a song during tape change. P said “Who do I have to pay to use that” The instrumental part of Billy Jack Bitch was written by Mike.
Story : Working on something and Mike B was impressed with how it sounded. Forgot everything he said could be heard in the control room by P. Commented “man that is funky” P responds “yes it is.”
Story : Tenor sax was playing a solo while working on something and it didn’t go well. When it was done, from the control room P says “You guys see Waterworld?” Tenor sax guy “No who’s in it” Prince, “Your mama” Tenor sax guy, “Oh it’s good to know she’s getting work!” “Prince falls off his chair from laughing” (Waterworld has a reputation for being a very bad movie.)
Q: Why did you last? P told him “You and Clare Fischer really understand my music.” Was asked to be full time in 2012. He never had a falling out or harsh words with P and P never rejected any of his additions to his songs.
Got our pictures from our tour back. Framing mine for sure! It’s like my 5th picture in here and the only good one, lol...

Funk Soldiers Concert
Tumblr media
Honesty we were all kind of weary about this as this seemed to be a remix of the NewPower Soul group to some degree...or at least that concept, but once again VERY happy to be completely checked about the assumption because they were PHENOMENAL and not just because of something that happened...! Set list :
I’m Yours
I Feel For You
Party Man
Girls and Boys
Lady Cab Driver/Irresistible Bitch mashup (!)
1+1+1 is 3 (I LOST. MY. MIND. YA’LL KNOW THAT ONE NIGHT ALONE TIME PERIOD IS MY COMPLETE FAVORITE AND NOBODY DOES COVERS OF THOSE SONGS AND IT WAS SO GOOD!)
The Work Part 1 (I WAS ABSOLUTELY DELIRIOUS! AGAIN BECAUSE THIS IS MY ERA AND NOBODY DOES THIS! I was so into it singing, foot stomping and dancing, I got tapped by security and they asked if I want to go on stage! I 100% always say I’d never do it, but I thought I’d get to jam out to The Work since that goes on for a bit. I got back stage and they said I was to be part of a dance battle (WHAT?! I LEGIT AM THE MOST RESERVED PERSON USUALLY ABSOLUTELY NOT! (And also I guess for The Professor, lol) So me and Lenny Beason (from Purple Underground who thankfully I mostly know in real life so I was comfortable) were to battle to...
Black Sweat (Kip told me to go first so I tried to do every dance I could think of...The Housequake, The Get Off dance, Tried to remember the Purple Funk SF Funknroll dance but my mind blanked so I did some booty pops and stopped on the accents with a pose. Lenny went during the next chorus...then I had to go again. Shelby said I’m her funk sister now and we got T-shirts! My heart was beating so fast ya’ll! It pays to love The Rainbow Children! LOL!
Chelsea Rodgers
Xtraloveable (AGAIN A DREAM COME TRUE I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO HEAR THIS LIVE WITH THESE GUYS DOING THE HORNS!)
Big City
Welcome 2 the Dawn (SO glad they did this instead of Purple Rain! Amazing choice! A Great song!)
Paisley Park
All the Critics Love You in New York/Housequake Jumps
Alphabet Street (Sheila E came out and crowd surfed for a bit)
Very good job! They were very tight, funky, and kept everyone’s spirits WAY up, especially with the EXCELLENT choice of Welcome 2 the Dawn being the only slow song.
This day was the 21st and honestly it was a BLUR. Even if I hadn’t gotten chosen by Ghost Prince to go up, the experience the band gave us with their energy and love made it hard to be sad this day. For me, interestingly I had a harder time on the 20th seeing him up there at the Big Screen event and with all the news that came out on the previous Thursday...did stay in bed for a bit that day to be honest...but “the day” was so full of just AMAZING like he legit came down like “ya’ll don’t cry for me...look at all this that I left behind for you to enjoy!” This day was was distracting with so much information followed by such an explosive show! Everyone was on their feet dancing, singing, hands in the air, just the whole time!
I’m very glad the days for the arena event got switched because it honestly would have been too much for me if it fell on this day...
Last part here!

Gypsy Showcases the Ultimate Stage Mother
Porchlight Music Theatre Presents
Gypsy
Book by Arthur Laurents
Director Michael Weber
October 12 – November 25
Gypsy Showcases the Ultimate Stage Mother
The Marx Brothers, Drew Barrymore, Shirley Temple, Elizabeth Taylor, Brooke Shields, Dorothy Dandridge, Lindsey Lohan, and Kim Kardashian all had overbearing stage mothers dubbed as “Momagers” to push them to success. However, long before Kris Jenner hit the scene to do whatever it took to make her daughters famous, there was one legendary “Stage Mother” by the name of Rose Hovick, a woman who was a force to be reckoned with and would stop at nothing to make sure she and her daughters were in the spotlight.
If you haven’t heard of “Gypsy,” let us introduce you to this musical fable written by playwright Arthur Laurents. Gypsy was considered by many to be the greatest American musical. It is loosely based and inspired by one of showbiz’s unique personalities, Rose Hovick, and the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist. Gypsy’s  mother, Rose, has become known as “the ultimate show business mother.”
Rose is the most profit-making “Stage Mother” of the mid-twentieth century, a star in her own right. The musical includes some standard favorites such as  “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” “Together, “Wherever We Go” and the show-stopping, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”
“Gypsy” is set in various cities throughout the United States in the early 1920s to the early 1930s, where the world of big-time, family oriented vaudeville is quickly fading away to the adult-themed burlesque industry.
In this electrifying and heart-wrenching story of a woman who raises her daughters to navigate their dreams of stardom whether they wanted to or not, Mama Rose, a victim of her wander-lust for personal success, becomes the “Momager” from hell where agents and producers refuse to work with her.
“Gypsy” is an old favorite that hit the stage with several talented actors such as the unconquerable entertainer with the extraordinary gift to capture an audience, E. Faye Butler, who leads the cast in “Gypsy” as Mama Rose. Like so many before her playing the character of Mama Rose, she brought her feisty persona to life with a lot of zest.
Daryn Whitney Harrell, who played Louise, Mama Rose’s eldest daughter, was such a pleasant surprise to grace the stage. Louise comes out of the shadows of her younger sister June (Aalon Smith), the one Mama Rose invested so much in; Louise eventually rose to stardom as the sophisticated “Gypsy Rose Lee!”
This well-rounded cast also included Herbie (José Antonio García). His character fell instantly in love with Mama Rose as he waited patiently on her terms to marry her. He tried to add balance to her life as he became the girls’ official manager.
Director Michael Weber showcases this dynamic fast-paced musical as it follows the dreams and hardships of Mama Rose to raise her two daughters to perform on stage and it casts an affectionate eye on the struggles of business life during the vaudeville era.
Let’s Play “Highly Recommends” that you check out this amazing musical “Gypsy” at Porchlight Theatre where “everything’s coming up roses!”
The cast includes:
Faye Butler (Rose)
Daryn Whitney Harrell (Louise)
Aalon Smith (June)

A pioneer of humanism in Turkish literature… Translation of Iliad and Odyssey, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Hesiod and many more, “Dictionary of Mythology”, which she wrote fables for the adults, her essays “Ecce Homo” and “Love Management”, “Blue Voyage” and “Blue Anatolia” on Anatolian culture and civilization, which are considered as one of the masterpieces of our travel literature… An intellectual, who made countless contributions to our literature, ideas and world of thought:   Azra Erhat…
What Is Blue Voyage? “Blue voyage is difficult to tell, you need to live it… If you ask me what it means to be a blue voyager, I say that this is a matter of consciousness. This consciousness gives people a sense of privilege, superiority, but does not separate the blue voyager from their surroundings; on the contrary, it gives them the desire to adopt this ideal to others by infusing with a kind of morality. The greatest achievement for a blue voyager is to be able to organize a blue voyage and give her friends an adventure of blue voyage.” (from the “Blue Voyage”)
Beyond being an academic, writer and translator, Azra Erhat was an important sociologist, a true intellectual who was able to perfectly match the history of philosophy and thought with literary texts. One of the issues she was thinking over was that ancient traditions and habits nourished by the traditional heritage of humanity do not inherit the modern individual. According to her, the greatest disaster facing humanity in the late 20th century was the malady of alienation. Modern-day people have been alienated from their culture, history, language, literature and geography regardless of the geography or social class in which they belong. As a matter of fact, today’s maladies such as depression and loneliness hysteria, which were described as “chronic melancholy” have been among the modern diseases which appeared as a result of alienation. The monotonous lives, which seem to be blessing in big cities, had no meaning other than being trapped in a press, were the biggest human problems of the era. Erhat also saw that people who longed for fresh air and natural life fell into a swamp of tourism, which gradually turned into industry. She said that instead of working hard and pulling out all the stops all year round in order to participate in holiday tours with big ships and spend a few weeks in uproarious, blue voyages would make people more productive and healthy.
The blue voyage philosophy, about which Azra Erhat explained at great length, is a modest adventure far from splendor and luxury, free from detail and where the unnecessary left outside the boat. Comfort is not required in blue voyages; the boat has a toilet and a shower. Blue voyagers even cook their own food. The number of crew is minimum. Their job is to sail the boat according to the route of the voyage and the weather conditions. All sailing and fishing activities apart from the technical details are the responsibility of blue voyagers. This journey is to get rid of arrogance and individualism brought about by city life with a collective consciousness.
From Voyage To A Movement Of Thought: “Blue Anatolianism” Azra Erhat attributed the benefit of physical journey to the condition of bothering the mental comfort. In the 1950s and 60s, a group of poets, writers, painters and intellectuals, including Sabahattin Eyüboğlu and the Fisherman of Halicarnassus, went to sea, bothering their mental comfort regardless of the difficult conditions and impossibilities of the period. The name of their boat is the same as their mood. Lightheaded… Their journeys starting from the North Aegean were always on the sea, coasts and ancient geographies. They traced the historical adventures of the Mediterranean civilizations in the fertile Anatolian lands. In fact, this adventure may be defined as an intellectual idea development, re-reading and interpreting history, and transferring the acquired intellectual development through literature, poetry, painting and philosophy. As a matter of fact, in Turkish intellectual history, this enlightenment movement pioneered by the same names (the Fisherman of Halicarnassus, Sabahattin Eyüboğlu, Azra Erhat, Vedat Günyol) is called Blue Anatolianism.
Translation and Importance Of Western Sources We can easily say that as an expert of Classical Greek Philology, Azra Erhat is the person that contributes most to the Anatolian enlightment in introducing Western Sources into Turkish. In the scope of the project “Translations from World Literature”, which was put into practice with the prediction of Hasan Ali Yücel, Azra Erhat’s literary ability as well as command of language contributed to the introducing many basic works of Greek classics into Turkish. Peace from Aristophanes, Electra from Sophocles, Republic from Plato, Antigone from Anouilh were the first classical texts which were introduced into Turkish. Erhat, who began to gain experience in translation and became more and more aware of its importance, decided to translate Iliad and Odyssey from Homer and then works from Herodotus and considered it as a duty and obligation. She prepared a study program to introduce the epics of Homer, which are among the most important works in the history of Western literature, into Turkish, but she could have not predicted where to begin. And another important problem was that texts were poems. She consulted with Sabahattin Eyüboğlu with questions such as the difficulty of translating poetry, which one should she focus on as a priority. Eyüboğlu said that these epic texts, one of the most classic works in the history of literature, could only be well translated if she translated them together with a poet and added: “You must start from Iliad!”
Hi To Homer In Turkish Thus, she and poet A. Kadir began the translation adventure of these huge texts, which would last for fifteen years. Azra Erhat won Habib Törehan Science Award in 1959 for the first volume of translation of Iliad, and Turkish Language Institution Translation Award in 1961 for the third volume of translation of Iliad. Azra Erhat sees the relationship between history and literature from a very illuminating perspective. The triangle of Mesopotamian Basin, Anatolia and Mediterranean, which is the oldest settlement in the history of mankind, is a paradise of legends, epics, migrations and fairy tales. The reason why these narrations were attributed to the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations is just that they were written in the language of the local authors, Ancient Greek and Latin. However, all these ancient stories took place in Anatolia, the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia and Egypt. They multiplied with a cultural vortex and existed by being told to the next generations. They are the common products of all these geographies. Languages are symbolic tools for telling them and carrying them into the future. They should not turn the narrative into a cultural belonging.
The Sea Will Always Recommence… (Valéry) We read the reflections of her “humanist” philosophy in her books “Blue Voyage” and Blue Anatolia” from beginning to the end, which Azra Erhat extended the boundaries of the genre of travel, and wrote by benefiting from many disciplines from philosophy and anthropology to archeology and mythology. The reflection of her this kind of thoughts is felt in all of her essays and travel writings, except for her memoirs, even in her translations even though she remains loyal to a text. The narrator in the books is the voice of “me” that reflects a deep life and love of human to their style by abstracting it. It is fueled by the air, water, mountain, rock, sea, land of Anatolia and the Mediterranean, and above all, the human heart. Let us salute the writer who spent her whole life with love of human and nature just like her writings, with the verse of Orhan Veli, quoted in her book Blue Voyage.
There are days when I pack up and leave, In the smell of the nets pullet out of the sea. Drifting from this island to that, In the trail of the shearwaters.                                        Orhan Veli

Humanity Is A Happiness Problem “I walked back and forth. I read and thought. I came to the conclusion that humanity is a problem of happiness. That is, a person becomes a human only when he is happy. Moreover, the main aim and end goal of the teachings that tend to be humanism or humanitarian are to ensure the happiness of the human.” (Azra Erhat, from her book “Love Management”)
Azra Erhat And Humanism Azra Erhat explains her deep understanding of humanism and her humanistic perspective in her book “Ecce Homo”: “Humanism is to work that will take humanity further on the path of humanity by seeing, finding and loving the whole humanity in a human chosen as an example.” Seeing and loving the whole society in individual, loving by finding adequate to be human and keeping away from pragmatism is a true humanist approach. At the heart of her works is this sense “humanitarian” (in Turkish: “insancı”).
