I often like to divide magic in Runeterra into 2 categories: spiritual and elemental. Elemental magic, obviously, involves controlling the elements, such as wind, water, lightning, etc.
Spirit magic, by contrast, generally seems to revolve around manipulating abstract concepts, such as thoughts, dreams, memories, emotions, and even souls (for what is the soul but the concept of one’s self? Even Mordekaiser’s bio supports this idea, as one’s Oknun name is effectively their ‘true name’ that represents the core of their being after the physical body has decayed.)
However, we see plenty of instances when the two schools of magic overlap, such as shadow magic or the elemental spirits/demons found across Runeterra. I believe this is because the elements themselves can also be manipulated on a conceptual level, due to the symbolism associated with them.
For example, let’s look at two fire mages: Annie and Milio. Both of these kids control the same element, but wield it in radically different ways. Annie uses fire as a force of destruction because that’s how she views it; a chaotic, consuming flame that reduces everything to ash (such as her family and home.) Doubtless this is in-part due to Tybaulk’s influence on her, but Annie’s own experience with fire has no doubt created that mental link with destruction in her mind. It is a force she can use to burn down anyone or anything that she wants.
By contrast, Milio uses fire in almost the exact opposite way. His ‘soothing flame’ is, after-all, inspired by the comforting glow of a campfire, or the gentle warmth of a lit hearth. Milio sees the potential in fire to offer solace, and that is how he manifests his inner fire as fuemigos: eternal companions to him just as fire has long been a companion of humanity.
Lissandra and Nunu are also prime examples of this. Lissandra uses her ice magic in a way that befits her personality: bitter, cold and unforgiving. Her nihilistic outlooks manifest black ice paint a very bleak and unchanging image, trapping her enemies within as she herself is trapped in despair. Nunu, by contrast, wields ice magic with childlike wonder and imagination. His magic is often more akin to snow; something that can be shaped and molded with near limitless possibility
In short: magic in Runeterra is more than just a power to wield. It is a reflection of the wielder itself.))

A Thought on Magic
I think I am finally, slowly, starting to figure out what it is that bothers me about the modern discussion of magicbuilding.
The problem I keep seeing about Magic System Creation in posts, videos, and even books is conflation.
People put together independent variables that don't need to go to together. They extrapolate meanings that are not necessitated from their prior statements. They're frequently fuzzy about the direction they're approaching magic from even if they include a statement about it.
And while it isn't technically conflation, I think the bias toward "Hard Magic." Which I see nearly everywhere. Is essentially the conflation of the idea that something I like or want is universally good and something I don't like or don't want is universally bad. Because the people who are picking apart magic to look at underlying systems are the sort of people who like systems and puzzle solving.
There's also just this over-reliance on the same few stories. I understand why. It's a lot of work to analyze a system. And the farther you go from the mega-hits, the less you can rely on people being already familiar with the references. But it also means almost everybody is using practically nothing besides Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Mistborn. Which is a very few texts from which to extrapolate universal rules. People do use another favored text or two but they're really the bulwark of the arguments.
Plus, because of the conflation, people move terms all around so they get fuzzier until the term ends up having new meaning in an explanation without that ever being addressed. High Magic, for instance, may mean one thing in one explanation and something entirely different in another, contributing to further conflation of ideas in a vicious little circle.
There's nothing essentially incapable in any of the systems I've looked at. They'll produce magic systems. I just feel like there is so much bias and so many assumptions in the systems of creation that, in aggregate, they end up being 'do what we like or your own thing.' Which isn't terribly helpful for anyone who wants something other than what the designers like. It biases the approach as a whole toward the designer's point of view because it is the lowest hanging fruit. It is what exists with the work already done. And it just seems right because it is explicable. In the same way that you'll tend to believe someone who can support their argument over someone who can't, even if they don't have the right answer.
It's much the same sort of problem of biasing everything toward a single language, it helps prevent a diversity of ideas. Other ideas are difficult to express because there isn't an easily understood language for it.
Of course, the problem now becomes, having realized an issue, what to do about it? :/

How Magic Works
Magic is essentially an extension of one's willpower, using the body's internal supplies of mana. Mana is used up when casting magic but is slowly replenished over time.
Most magic needs a wand, made out of rowan wood with a quartz tip. Some very basic spells can be cast without a wand, though they are subtle enough that most people don't realize they're casting magic. Once you've trained up your "magical muscles" enough, it's possible to cast more complex magic without a wand.
The Society of the Supernatural creates their wands by using the rowan trees in the Chateau's backyard and simply ordering the quartz online. Sometimes, magical problems require modern solutions.
Feel free to ask questions about this world!

The Mages Circuits
I know tumblr despises wide images, and some people struggle with searchable text, so you can find the transcript below the cut:
The Mages Circuits are the regulatory and educational agencies of the spell casting world. Comprised of practitioners and academics, the seven circuits control licensure of active mages and (attempt to) ensure safe and ethical practice of magic. The circuits often approve contract work for its members ensuring that mages keep safe, well paying jobs and their clients receive skilled, quality work. As a Divine Initiative, the Mages Circuits appear in the majority of universes in some manner or another. The Circuit is sometimes a government organization and sometimes independent, but most regions of significant casting population will likely have at least a joint circuit of some kind, even if every branch is not represented.
GOLD - Those who use their magic for healing and / or work with the body. This includes any application of magic in a medical setting as well as shapeshifting and some forms of necromancy. The Gold is among the more strict circuits.
SILVER - Those whose magic is applied in practical means. The Silver is the largest circuit (and often the least respected) This includes such applications as preservation, structural reinforcement, fire retardation, and other maintenance. Silver Mages are also called House Mages or Lantern Tenders.
PALE - Those whose magic is defensive or environmental, including weather watchers, terraformers, and barrier casters. Also called the Pearl, Platinum, or Iron Circuit, the Pale and the Silver often overlap.
STEEL - Those who use their magic for combat or other offense. The most well known and well storied of the circuits is comprised mostly of soldiers and mercenaries. The Steel is the favorite circuit of non casters and the least favorite of anyone else.
BRONZE - Those who use magic in delegation. Construct masters, programmers, and the majority of necromancers fall under this circuit. The Bronze is among the tighter circuits and heavily regulates its members’ activities.
BRASS - An offshoot of The Bronze which deals specifically with the combination of domanic and non domanic mechanisms in. The smallest and newest circuit, the technomancers are oft looked down upon.
GLASS - Those whose magic deals in the unseen. This includes diviners, mediums, exorcists, and truth seers. As one of the smaller circuits, The Glass is often combined with The Pale, with whom they work often.
The Casters' Amulet is a simple medal or button of the appropriate material or color framed with wood and worn by licensed magical practitioners. Style varies wildly by location and time period.

Sometimes referred to as the Sea Mandrake the Deadman’s Kelp are particularly rare and quite difficult to harvest. Deadman’s kelp is a piece of maritime botany that both seafarers and sea witches alike covet and actively seek.
Sired by the decomposing bodies of shipwrecked fisherman or sailors these plants are used for their unique ability to call the winds or sway the seas, not unlike the conch of a Triton. However, the art of taming a Deadman’s kelp is a difficult one. If not properly utilized, what could have been the aid of a gentle wind or moving current could bring upon a massive storm. A Deadman’s kelp’s mouth, when above the water, must be covered at all times. Allowing it to wale above the waves, uncontrolled, would spell disaster. What would seem an easy fete can be difficult when Deadman’s Kelp mouths are typically gaping maws filled with serrated teeth and their bodies a wriggling, slimy, mass of flesh and detritus.
Mermaids are not fond of these abominations of the sea and typically do away with them if encountered.

Prompt 183
There’s a loud snarling noise outside the window.
Not that Jazz is concerned. She’s just also trying to study for med school and would appreciate some quiet. And preferred her brother not contracting rabies whenever he tried to square off with the local rogue or three who tried to use the alley.
As he had put it, it was his alley, he’d claimed it for tinkering. Though perhaps she should maybe ask him to quiet down on his insisted territorialism, even if she understood it. She would also probably maul someone if they tried to enter their apartment flat. It came with the territory of being ecto contaminated, or as the rest of them were now calling it, with being a liminal.
Once the more draconic aspects started to emerge well, one wasn’t just contaminated anymore after all. Hence the whole school-worth of them leaving Amity while all their parents waged war against the guys in white. Last she heard it was going well.
Which meant she could focus on her studies as soon as- okay it wouldn’t be quiet, it seems the rest of the kids joined in on mauling the poor idiot who tried to steal their things from the alley. Damn…

Making Magic Systems: The Only FOUR Types of Magic
I feel like this one is slightly better than usual. Like, she’s not saying anything particularly different but I think her approach to it in this video is smarter than usual because it feels more flexible than usual.

Magical Ecology Part 4
Saturation discharges are often messy and sometimes violent, but usually only occur in sparsely inhabited or entirely barren areas. In places where there is an abundance of life, but that life still fails to keep up with the growth of the foreground field, part of that population may Maericize.
Up to here, all souls discussed have been Maunic. Their only purpose is to facilitate life, and discharge at death. Because of this, they are rather simply built, and, most importantly Hardened. No magic can come in or go out of the soul at any time. This makes their possessors Mundanes.
When a population Maericizes, a few individuals are born with Soft souls which allow magic to pass in and out. Maeric creatures are called Casters, and their more open souls allow them to sense the foreground field and to use it for intentional spell casting, which returns magic to the background field at a vastly accelerated rate.
Casters manipulate magic by natural instinct and often pass on casting tradition to their mundane peers. Over time, the Maeric population will rise until a balance is struck with the surrounding environment.
Maericism is non hereditary and can occur in any living creature in an environment, but some species are more likely to take it on than others. This is called Type One Magical Affinity. Animals tend to have higher affinities than plants and complex organisms tend to have higher chances, generally speaking.

A comic to properly introduce Prof. (Austin) Maple. He is absolutely the guy to run to his discord friends in a crisis - for better or for worse...
If you want to know exactly why this is happening to him, take a look at the original character plan I made when designing him here.
