It was late. Way past midnight. Maddy had already gone to bed a few hours ago. But Charles was still up, slouched on the couch in his five-star suite, a frown edged deep into his forehead.

He silently scrolled through his social media, switching from Twitter to Instagram to Twitter and back to Instagram again. You'd just posted new photos of your show in London tonight, looking as beautiful as ever.

The stage was where Charles knew you felt most comfortable, somewhere you weren’t scared to open up your heart and be vulnerable. The atmosphere you were able to create during your concerts couldn’t be put into words. It was truly something one of a kind. The way you effortlessly connected with the audience… it always left him speechless and usually with a wide, beaming smile.

In other words, he would never tire of watching you perform.

Charles had always been proud of you. And still, as he sat there reading through the thousands of posts by your fans and even some by his colleagues, he couldn’t help but feel that same sense of pride swell inside of him.

Though, that pride was mostly overshadowed by a feeling of intense guilt. Guilt that kept nagging at him ever since the moment you’d packed your bags and left his apartment with tears running down your cheeks. His heart clenched painfully as Charles thought back to that particular day. It was his fault. All of it. He had been stupid. No, beyond stupid. It had started out as a drunken mistake. But you can’t make a drunken mistake twice, let alone thrice.

When you’d found out and had confronted Charles, he hadn’t denied it. And in that moment, he’d witnessed that last bit of hope you’d stubbornly clung to, shatter before his eyes. Along with your heart and your trust.

As the reality of the situation had slowly dawned on him, he’d gone completely numb. Charles had wanted to fight for you harder, but he hadn’t. If he had, his current situation could’ve possibly been entirely different. Your new song—which he had already listened to three times—made that perfectly clear.

But he had decided on another path. A decision that resulted from losing the love of his life by his own hand. Did it make any sense? To choose to stay with the girl he’d betrayed you with? In his loneliness it had made some weird type of sense. Because if there was one thing Charles couldn’t handle well, it was being alone. And boy, he’d never felt more alone than when you’d closed that door behind you, making him believe there was no longer hope for a future together.

Now, all he wanted was to focus on moving on and stick to his decision to be with Maddy. Was he in denial about his true feelings and the pain he tried to bury deep inside of himself? Perhaps. Probably.

Charles was still mindlessly scrolling when Maddy emerged from the bedroom, leaning against the wall studiously. He hadn’t even heard her until she cleared her throat, speaking to him softly but with a tinge of annoyance.

“Charles, are you finally coming to bed?”

“Ouais, je serai là dans une minute,” he answered absentmindedly.

Yeah, I’ll be there in a minute.

She rolled her eyes. “How often do I have to tell you: speak English. I’ve no clue what you’re saying.”

“Mhm, désolé…”

Charles paused, quickly looking up as he realised his mistake.

“Seriously,” Maddy scoffed.

He winced at her irritated look. There was no denying Maddy had a temper, her moods changing as quick as lightning. The countless fights Charles and her had had in the past few months were enough proof of that.

“Sorry,” he tried again.

She huffed, stomping away in the direction of the suite’s bedroom, harshly closing the door behind her.

He rubbed his temple, sighing. He was just tired. And speaking in his native tongue when he was tired or upset was something he did without thinking.

Years ago, you’d quickly figured that out as well. However, you never judged him for it. No, you were understanding, trying to acquaint yourself with his language to understand him better. To be there for him. In the end, you knew him so well that you could almost always accurately read him, the language barrier between you no longer an issue. Not that it had ever been one in the first place.

He thought back to one of the tweets he’d read before Maddy had come barging in.

‘Charles made the biggest mistake of his life. I hope he realizes it.’

He squeezed his eyes shut, letting his head lull back against the couch’s headrest. And just like he’d done ever since that fateful day, he willed all of his doubts, guilt, and pain into a neat little box, unable to face them. Charles sighed again, pushing himself to his feet, wearily following in Maddy’s footsteps towards their shared bedroom. But as his hand hovered over the door handle, one single truth echoed through him, unwavering.

Oui, he thought. Je le comprends.

Yes. I do realize it.

you and your girlfriend, lia were funnily introduced through your friend leah. you were quite popular in the music industry, leah had known you all her and your life, being childhood friends through the thick and thin. you had some time off and leah invited you to one of her games where you met your future girlfriend.

the game had finished, leah making you sit in the friends and family section with her (your) mum. leah bounds over to you, pulling you into a tight hug. “you’re here!” she exclaims, holding you tightly to her chest, “i’m here!” you match her energy with a bright smile. “hey, i want you to meet someone” she quickly looks around, perking up and running over to one of the most beautiful girls you’ve ever seen - leah’s told you all about the beautiful swiss in her team, she wasn’t lying about her beauty, you were nervous.

leah drags the girl by the arm to you, shoving her lightly into you, you quickly put your hands out to catch the girl with a giggle. “hi” you breathe out, she smiles at you sheepishly, “hi”. leah looks between the two of you with a smirk. leah knew you’d like her, she subtly moves to chat with her mum beside you.

“lia” she sticks her hand out to you, you gently take her hand in yours, “(y/n)” you shake hands with mutual shy smiles. both of you engage in small talk, feeling so familiar. “i love your music, by the way” she offers with a charming smile, you could’ve melted to the floor then and there. “i love your football skills, by the way” you say cheekily. she gives you a bright laugh, quickly grabbing your arm and letting go, you can’t help but miss the contact.

“hey, did you want to go for a coffee or something? i’d like to get to know you more if you’re okay with it” she looks down at the floor, preparing for rejection but instead felt a hand wrap around hers, looking up to see your bright grin. “i’d really love that, lia” you give her hand a gentle squeeze, and she looks down at them with a smile.

you wait for her outside of the change rooms with a shy smile, you couldn’t stand still. waiting for this beautiful girl was more daunting than performing live at a packed out stadium. she made you so nervous, she felt exactly the same.

she comes out dressed comfortably, matching your laid back style for the game. she rushes towards you with a bright smile, “ready to go?” you nod at her with a grin. you both go to a small café in london, talking about yourselves, random topics, your work and just realising how much you had in common. as the time progresses, dates turn into a relationship, you and lia becoming more serious and moving in together.

in present days, you had been dating for three years, you and lia still love sick puppies - leah forever claiming that she was the reason for it, the both of you couldn’t deny that.

when you and lia started becoming more serious, you would always go to her games, clad in her jersey and cheering for her loudly. every time she saw you in those stands, her heart would clench, she knew you were incredibly busy but you always made the time for her, a promise you gave to her when you started dating.

lia quickly did her rounds of photos and signatures before bounding over to you with a bright smile. she doesn’t say anything, but pulls you into a loving kiss, mouths synchronising perfectly with one another. she pulls away from you, placing a quick kiss on your nose before finally looking at you. “hi, baby” you breathe out, attempting to catch your breath. “hey, beautiful” she grins at you cheekily and you can’t help but give her a light shove on her shoulder.

“you played so well, my love” you say proudly, grabbing her hands and swinging them lightly. she shakes her head at you, “well, my wag is here” she shrugs, “i’ve got to impress her, you know?” she squeezes your hand, “well, your wag is certainly impressed” you smirk at her, her eyes widened with fake surprise, “you know my wag?” you shove her again, “not funny” you scowl, quickly disappearing when your girlfriend peppers your cheek with kisses, both of you in giggles.

“i’ll get changed and we can go home?” she questions, quirking her brow at your confused expression. “oh you’re talking to me?” you pause, “are you trying to crack onto me, wälti, when you have a wag?” you exclaim, gasping and covering your mouth with your hand. she looks at you, mouth agape and fighting a grin, “you’re pretty hot..so” she shrugs and you gasp again, this time, lia moves to place another chaste kiss on your lips. she pulls away with an amused grin, “i only have one wag and i just kissed her and love her very much” you grin at her shyly, pushing her to the direction of the change room when she laughs at your shyness.

you were currently on tour, selling out massive venues and crowds all over the world. no matter what city you were in, you made sure that you watched your girlfriend’s games, texting her words of praise and encouragement for her performance. your team often made fun of you for being such a proud wag, you always wore your “wälti” jersey to bed, watched the games everywhere you go, even if it was between a show - you had your phone out, looking at the score and watching intently.

many of them sent pictures to lia, showing you in your dolled up performance outfits crouching on the ground, phone in hand with the arsenal team splayed on the screen. every time she received them, she’d let out a proud grin, adding them to a folder labelled “my girl on tour”. you made sure to call her every night, talking about your days and giving each other the run downs of what was happening in your life, you’d gone around the world and you were finally able to come home, you and lia were incredibly excited to see each other.

the first night you got back to the uk, you had a show, inviting the entire arsenal team to come and have some fun, they had a game two days later that you were very excited about. you give them backstage passes, as well as them having a designated area that they could enjoy themselves in.

as soon as lia and the girls got there, she immediately went backstage to find you, she hadn't seen you in person for 8 months. she knocks on your dressing room door, “come in” you say tiredly, lia frowns a little at that, opening the door slightly and peeking her head in, when you see your girlfriend, you immediately perk up and pull her inside, jumping on her and giving her a tight hug.

she laughs brightly as she holds onto your thighs, hoisting you up on her waist. “hi, baby” she coos, rubbing comforting shapes on your back. you clutch into her tightly, “lia baby” you say tearfully, moving to cup her head between your hands. you both look at each other adoringly, taking in each other’s appearances. “aw, baby, don’t cry” she coos, wiping your tears and moving to sit on the small couch in your dressing room, you now sitting on her lap.

“i missed you” you pout at her, she smiles at you lovingly, “i missed you too, my love” she gives you a playful pinch to your cheek. you move quickly to place a kiss on her lips, she quickly deepens it, grabbing the back of your neck and pulling you down to her. she kisses you passionately, gripping onto your hip with one hand and keeping the other on your neck, you place your own hands through her hair, lightly scratching her scalp with your nails. you both whine into each other’s mouths, it had been so long since you’d seen each other, feeling like years had gone by.

she goes to further deepen the kiss until a knock sounds on your door. you pull away from her reluctantly, she moves to places kisses on your neck, “w-who is it?” you say shakily, “only me” you hear your childhood friend on the other side, she quickly opens the door and you go to move off your girlfriend, but she holds you incredibly tight, you couldn’t move.

“well, well, well, you couldn’t wait till you got home, huh?” leah teases, holding her arms out to you, lia lets you go with a glare at leah when you hug her tightly. “i knew her first, wälti, back off” leah scowls right back, cradling you to her chest. “well i date her, williamson, who’s really winning?” lia challenges, you shake your head at both of them amusingly, they had no malice in their words, they were just teasing each other so you let them do it.

lia stands up now, grabbing your arm and pulling you to her chest, she was holding you so tightly, “i need to breathe, love” you tease, she adjusted her grip slightly. “i actually came in here to tell you that you’re on in 10” she checks the watch resting on her wrist, your eyes widened, you weren’t even dressed. “shit! get out!” you push leah out of the door and she laughs, you turn towards your girlfriend expectantly, “you too, off you go” she pouts, “baby” you shake your head, grabbing her and pushing her out of the door, “nope, go have fun” you were about to close the door but she puts her hand on it,

“well, i was about to!” she exclaims, smirking at your red face, “bye, baby!” you sing out, shutting the door in her face, you hear your phone ping:

you’re lucky you’re cute.

you smile at the message and lock your phone, getting yourself quickly dressed and to your position for the opening. all the arsenal girls were teasing lia, jumping around excitedly to see you, all of them big fans.

your opening number plays, everyone screaming loudly, lia was probably the loudest. you come out and lia nearly drops to the floor, there you were, dressed in your girlfriend’s jersey. the girls immediately start teasing lia harder, all she can do is stare at you. everyone knew the two of you were together, she’s seen you in this jersey thousands of times, but this made her heart beat out of her chest.

“london!” you cheer, the crowd erupts when you finish your first song. “thank you all for coming out tonight, i’m so glad to see you all” you take a moment to look around the packed stadium, feeling so small amongst the crowd and the cheers.

“before i continue, i just want to thank not only you guys for coming along but my favourite team ever, the arsenal women’s team!” the girls jump around, cheering for you loudly, “but my biggest thank you has to go to my lovely, beautiful girlfriend, lia” cheers louder than ever ensure as you point towards the girl’s section, hard to miss as they were on the ground floor where you could see them.

lia looks at you tearfully, her heart swelling at your mention. she holds her hand up in a heart motion and you can’t help but return it, laughing brightly into the microphone. “alright, now let’s have some fun” music sounds through the speakers and you continue the concert, the girls having fun, dancing and singing with each other. lia knew every word, her eyes not leaving you for even a second. as soon as the show was over, she goes to find you.

you yelp when your girlfriend hoists you up on her waist again, smiling down at her brightly. she grabs the back of your head to pull you into a quick kiss, “my little superstar, i’m so proud of you” she looks at you in awe, putting you on the ground in front of her, pulling you into a tight hug. you gently sway her side to side and hold her tightly, “thank you for coming” you mumble into her chest, “i wouldn’t miss it for the world” she places a quick kiss on your lips, holding you as if you were going to disappear.

two days later, the arsenal match comes swiftly around the corner. you were sat in the friends and family section, “wälti” proudly on your back as you watched the match. you watch your girlfriend proudly, cheering for her as well as the team loudly. after a successful win for arsenal, lia rushes towards you, lifting you over the barrier and onto the pitch. once you’re safely situated on the grass, she wraps you into a tight hug, pulling away to look at your smiling face.

“hi, baby” she grins, giving you a quick kiss on your lips, “hello, lovey” she smile up at her, affectionately kissing her cheek and she giggles at the contact. “you played so well, baby, i’m so proud of you” you clutch her face between your hands, smile never leaving your face. a loving smirk graces her face as she looks into your eyes, “thank you for coming” she wraps her arms around your waist, pulling you close and hiding her face into your neck. “i wouldn’t miss it for the world” you say, comfortingly rubbing small circles on her back.

Wembley Stadium buzzed with excitement as the crowd eagerly waited for the big night to start. Feather boas, cowboy hats, pride flags and colorful signs were everywhere in sight in typical Love on Tour fashion.

Tonight was one for the history books. Harry was closing out a successful run of 4 sold out nights at Wembley Stadium, and his family, friends, colleagues and all kinds of loved ones came together to support him.

To celebrate said shows, Harry had a lot of surprises in store, including letting each of his bandmates be an opening act for a different show; and even though it took a lot of convincing, his girlfriend agreed to take part for the final night.

"I'm not sure, lovie. I mean people like what I do as your bassist but my own work? I don't know if they would like to hear that." YN said when Harry brought up the proposal.

"They would, because you're insanely talented and everyone deserves to see it."

And with a few more kisses and sweet words, YN accepted to perform and delivered an impeccable set that was loved by everyone in the stadium, specially Harry who greeted her as soon as she was off the stage and held her as he said how proud he felt.

Now, the band was getting ready to hit the stage together one final time, gathering around in a circle as they always did.

"Okay, I'm not trying to get sentimental over here," Harry spoke to his bandmates, "But these past shows wouldn't had been possible without you, so let's do it one last time for London."

"Let's go!" Pauli cheered hyping everyone, and then they were off to perform.

The evening went on filled with music, excitement and love. Harry charmed the crowd as usual and the band gave their best playing their instruments.

"I'd like to take a few second, no, not a quick second, a brief moment to introduce you to my wonderful band." Harry said into the mic and proceeded to introduce each of his bandmates, leaving his girlfriend last as usual.

"And finally, in bass and vocals, YN!" she waved out to the crowd, but surprise filled her face when instead of moving on with the next song, Harry continued speaking about her, "YN, you're not just my bandmate, you're also my girlfriend, my musical soulmate and my partner in crime," Harry said, putting a hand into his heart and making the entire audience become emotional, "Tonight is a very special night, and I want to give you something that is just as special, and celebrate with everyone here."

A trace of confusion flickered across YN's face, not sure about what Harry was about to do, she leaned closer and her voice came out in barely a whisper, "Harry what's going on? Don't tell me you're proposing becau-"

"I'm not proposing, yet," Harry interrupted her with a wink, "Just wait here."

He walked towards the side of the stage where a crew member handed her the a shinny item that YN and the rest of the crowd was yet to identify, it was when she took a proper look at the golden trophy that a wave of realization hit her body.

"No way, Harry. Is that?" YN said off the mic to him when he was next to her.

"It's your Grammy, baby. Came in the mail the other day and I decided this was the best way to give it to you," Harry shrugged, pulling her into his arms in hug, "Congratulations, bandmate."

YN pulled back to look at him, she was aware of the thousands of fans watching them but she still pulled him in for a quick kiss before speaking, "Thank you, this is magical."

Harry only pecked her forehead before speaking to the crowd again, "Give it up for YN! Grammy Award winner for her collaboration as a songwriter and producer in Harry's House!"

The audience broke down in cheers and screams as YN held her award up, and as the crowd continued to celebrate, she thought that the award not only symbolized a musical achievement, but also the strong bond she shared with Harry, one she wishes would last forever.

Wake Up! Lovejoy are already a phenomenon

Squashed into a tour bus somewhere in Berlin are the biggest band that – unless you’re as chronically online as us, Dear Reader – you’ve maybe never heard of. With sold-out tours across the UK, Europe and North America, millions of monthly Spotify listeners and a spot in the UK Top 40 with their latest single ‘Call Me What You Like’, Lovejoy could be mistaken for veterans.

Far from it. Their first proper bit of press is, well, this very cover interview. They’re gearing up to release only their third (or maybe fourth, depending how you count their just dropped ‘From Studio 4’ collection, released under the name Anvil Cat) EP, ‘Wake Up & It’s Over’, and those sold-out tours? The first shows they’ve ever played. It’s rare this amount of hype surrounds a guitar band these days, so who the fuck are Lovejoy?

Formed during the early 2021 UK lockdown, Lovejoy consists of Will Gold as the frontman, Joe Goldsmith on lead guitar, Ash Kabosu on bass, and Mark Boardman on drums. Seemingly brought together by sheer luck, their epic ascent is the result of a lifetime of individual hard work and some serious fan devotion over the past couple of years.

It’s taken a while to pin the band down, and we catch them just after their first full UK tour as they embark on the European leg. It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind.

“I think it was our 32nd show yesterday, which is just nuts,” says Ash, who introduces himself as the one who doesn’t talk and proceeds to lead the interview. “Literally every show we’ve played, we’ve been like, ‘That was the best one!’ Then the next one, ‘Oh, that was the best one!’”

“I’ve especially been enjoying acclimating myself to not knowing where I’m going to be falling asleep every night,” says Will, “which is a very hard thing to get around. But it’s a lot of fun. I’m really enjoying it. And I love seeing everyone’s faces because we’ve been somewhat of a lockdown band. To now be able to put faces to the numbers is great; it’s lovely to see and speak to them.”

Describing their very first live shows at the end of 2022 as “teething”, Lovejoy admit they’re still getting to grips with it all. Although the size of their fanbase means they could’ve easily sold out bigger venues than the humble Electric Brixton they headed up on this tour, they didn’t want to skip steps for a good reason.

“We didn’t want to be bad,” says Ash, frankly. “It’s a completely different ballpark to just, you know, playing guitar in your bedroom, and there are so many moving parts and so many things you don’t think about that you need to learn and understand. We didn’t want to deliver a show to the fans that wasn’t good enough, so we’ve been deliberately ramping it up step by step and going through the process as naturally as possible.”

“It’s so much more personable and fun to make mistakes in front of a crowd of a couple hundred people who are along with you for the ride than when you start to get into the larger crowds,” adds Will. “Making a mistake, at least for me, really gets to me, but if I’m in a room with less people, and they’re there for the story, I feel more ready to make mistakes.”

Will and Joe cut their teeth playing with a folk punk band a few years prior to Lovejoy forming. After what Will describes as a “very dramatic first gig”, they went their separate ways, but his lust for live never went away. Finding one another at the beginning of the pandemic, Joe came to visit Will before the lockdowns kicked in and decided to sleep on the sofa rather than risking taking public transport back and forth to London.

“We wrote our entire first EP in my basement and very quickly decided we’re going to need a drummer and a bassist because all the stuff we were writing was band stuff,” Will explains. “It wasn’t our normal folk stuff that we were used to – and rock music has always been what me and Joe were the most interested in; even when we were in that folk band, we used to implore the lead singer if we could write some indie music please, and he would always be like, nah, not really into Arctic Monkeys actually.”

So they set out to find both a bassist and a drummer. Fate did its thing, and upon walking into a Smashburger in Brighton, Will met Ash, bass guitar in tow, and asked him if he’d like to be in a band.

“Ash is not one to say no to many exciting adventures,” says Will, “so he said yeah, and I gave him my address. Joe was very sceptical at first when I said I found a bassist in a burger shop.”

“I think for me personally,” adds Ash, “I’m living in Brighton – which is kind of a young, creative place – you often have conversations in pubs and places where people are like, we should do this, we should do that, and I genuinely thought that this was just another one of those conversations. Like, ‘Hey, I’m in a band, do you want to play?’ I never thought in my wildest dreams anything would even come of it. I didn’t even think we’d practice, let alone be playing shows in front of thousands of people.”

As for Mark, he was booked for the day via the freelancer hiring website Fiverr. When they couldn’t pay him the fee he was owed, they instead offered him a spot in the band.

“I said, look, you’re sick at this, do you want to just join the band?” Will explains. “Mark thought about it for a good five seconds and then said yes.”

Echoing Ash’s sentiments, Mark recalls, “I thought it would be another band that I’d join that wouldn’t even release on Spotify. Now we’ve sold out tours in the UK, Europe, America….”

Life before Lovejoy was very different for most of the boys. Mark was at university studying editing, hoping to work in visual effects, letting drumming take the back seat. “It would have been a grind for like 40 years to get a good paying job, and Will came along and saved me. So I’m very grateful for that,” he says.

Ash was working in broadcasting as a producer for TV, a job he’d gotten into after studying film production at uni, and had taught himself animation as another means of income. “Unlike Mark, I actually enjoyed it,” he adds.

As for Joe, he was working as a tree surgeon, which is a flashier-sounding name than what the job actually entailed. “I was literally just cleaning up branches on the floor,” he says. “I wasn’t even allowed to go up the trees.”

Will isn’t such a stranger to the spotlight, as he edited for the YouTube channel SootHouse in the late 2010s, later creating his own channel as Wilbur Soot and amassing a sizeable following on the streaming platform Twitch (although the other boys say they had no idea about his following when they joined the band, Ash noting, “I just thought he was quite a tall, handsome man, we’re just here because we fancy Will”).

With the band assembled, they started recording together in Will’s bedroom. In early 2021, the UK was still firmly in lockdown, so with all studios closed, it was their only choice. When they finally made it to a studio, the group had two days to record five songs, the ones that would make up their first EP, 2021’s ‘Are You Alright?’.

“We didn’t get enough done,” says Will, “which is why the first EP actually has scratch vocals. We just used my draft vocals that are then doubled up and thickened out. And also because it would have been far too expensive to just keep going back.”

“Which is why, little easter egg,” adds Ash, “some of the lyrics are wrong. We don’t sing those anymore, so the fans get very confused when we perform some of the earlier songs.”

The whole journey has been a learning curve for all four members. With none of them coming from a proper musical background, there was no one to guide them in the process. “We kind of had to jump headfirst in and see what we can do off the back of it,” says Will.

That isn’t to say they haven’t put the work in, though. With each of the boys picking up their instruments in their childhood or teenage years, it feels like they’ve been setting up their own individual dominoes, hitting the ground running when they were knocked down in perfect formation.

“There’s a photo of me when I was a baby,” Mark begins, explaining where he got his start in music. “I couldn’t even walk, and I’m on my auntie’s lap, who originally taught me drums. I’ve been wanting to play since I could speak, basically, but we could never afford a kit. And then I got to about eight years old, my parents finally got me an electric drum kit, and my auntie started teaching me. I caught up with her quickly, which was crazy. I always wanted to be in a band, but I was thinking more realistically, it’s the same odds as becoming a famous football player or something like that. Then along came these boys, and it all changed.”

“I was really determined from when I was about 13, 14?” Joe recalls, “Playing acoustic guitar and just learning stuff from YouTube and Arctic Monkeys songbooks, working out tabs and things like that. I was pretty dead set on at least giving it a shot to try.”

Ash’s start was similar, learning to play guitar with his dad. “When I was very young, my dad found an old Spanish guitar in the attic of our family home that wasn’t ours,” he tells us. “I’ve kind of always played guitar, and I’ve always been interested in music; my dad is in a band as well, bless him, doing dad rock. It’s always been a part of me, but I never ever thought I’d do anything with it.”

“Not for me,” Will jumps in. “The minute I first started learning guitar, I was like, this is what I want. When I was a teenager, I used to follow around bands and go to all their shows, and I knew from that moment I want this as my creative outlet. This is where I want to put my creative energy. I literally remember I shut myself in my room and practised guitar for like ten hours a day in the beginning. I missed two summers doing that. To finally be in this position I’m in now, thanks to all the wonderful support we’ve gotten from people, a lot of them have come across from the YouTube space, is just absolutely humbling. I’m trying to give it back in any way I can.”

It’s fair to say Lovejoy have been pulled substantially further up the ladder by a deeply devoted fan base, but that’s part of what makes their trajectory so exciting. There hasn’t been a new guitar band that’s had venues bursting at the seams like this for a long time. Just two self-released (on their own label Anvil Cat via AWAL) EPs, debut ‘Are You Alright?’ and follow-up ‘Pebble Brain’ garnered enough love to have fans queuing around the block for hours on end when the live shows finally came. It’s reminiscent of what 5SOS were seeing at the start of their career ten years ago, or that other numbers band.

And the devotion goes both ways, too; Lovejoy play games with the fans, leaving puzzles on social media for the fans to solve, firing confetti with QR codes printed on every other piece out at their London headline show. Their involvement hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“Oh, man, I love them,” Ash gushes. “One of the best feelings for me is when we create something, even if it’s something as simple as a little photo shoot, the response is incredible. And to inspire other people to create through our creativity is just so rewarding. My favourite part of it is seeing the writing, the poetry, the paintings, the drawings, like all the art that comes back to us is incredible.”

Joe adds, “Every single person that I’ve met after a show or before a show, they’re all so respectful and all so lovely. And they’re just so generous.”

Ash continues, “They make such an effort and go out of their way to listen to the support bands’ music and show up for them; they show up on time and fill the place out for everyone. And then they go crazy jumping around and singing to everyone’s music, and that’s just so fucking cool.”

With new EP ‘Wake Up & It’s Over’ on the horizon, it’ll be their first proper release since 2021. A break away from recording to do the touring part of being a new band has led to Lovejoy’s longest writing phase yet and has played a part in shaping the sound of their new material. This time around, being able to take more time to record and more studio options, they’ve fined tuned their sound and brought it closer to their personal ideal.

Aiming for something a little heavier this time, the boys wanted to pull in their individual influences more drastically. For Will, that’s shouty British lyrics and overdriven guitars (he calls Arctic Monkeys the most famous example), with Ash also growing up on the late 2000s indie of Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club. Mark, on the other hand, was introduced to bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria by his sister at a young age, pushing him into heavier territory when it came to discovering his own tastes and allowing the band to take on the slogan of ‘the only indie band with a double kick drum’. (Joe simply adds, “In the words of Brandon Flowers, it’s indie rock and roll for me.”)

Opening track ‘Portrait of a Blank Slate’ pulls in those influences most brazenly, employing the mathy Foals-y lead guitar, ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ era Arctic Monkeys fiddly bass, and wordy vocals a la The Wombats. “I can’t wait to play that for thousands of people,” says Joe.

They’ve been road-testing some of the other tracks too, the poppier (see: jumpier) ‘Consequences’ and ‘Warsaw’, as well as the single ‘Call Me What You Like’, but the rest have been kept a secret, one track particularly well.

Initially beginning the recording of this EP late last year, the boys weren’t 100% satisfied with the tracks. Having already played some of the tracks live, fans developed a particular affinity for one called ‘It’s Golden Hour Somewhere’, and up until the EP drops, have been under the impression it isn’t going to be released.

“I like to make rumours amongst the fan base,” says Ash, “I sort of said yeah, it’s scrapped, we just don’t like it, it’s not up to scratch, it doesn’t fit the nature of the EP, blah, blah, blah. We’ve just made up a bunch of nonsense. And they’ve bought into it. And as I expected, they’re also campaigning to bring it back. We’ve seen signs at shows saying ‘PLAY GOLDEN HOUR’. It’s just a bit of fun, and I think the relief and the excitement they’ll feel on the day that it comes out to just see it in the tracklisting will be worth it. I think for the amount of time that the fans have been waiting, we want it to be as special as possible.”

Even with ‘Call Me What You Like’ landing at No.32 on the UK Top 40 – an enormous feat and a rarity for a new band these days – it’s still what the fans think that means the most to Lovejoy.

“It was very validating to see it go that far,” says Will. “I think that was our longest-ever lyric writing time; we had the tune down for about ten months before I even penned the lyrics that ended up going in the final release. To see that time pay off is amazing, but we had no idea it would get that reception. It’s more important that our fans really love what we’re putting out. We’re aiming to create music that will really connect with our fan base, and you know, we’ll give them back what they’ve given us.”

With formative years that any new band would dream of, a knockout first tour and an audience hungry for more, Lovejoy are keen to maintain the hype. Currently using soundcheck time to write new material, every spare hour is used wisely while they’re on the road, Ash hinting they’ve already got new songs saved up for when they return home. This summer, they’ll be hitting the festival circuit, playing Reading and Leeds for the first time and undoubtedly not the last. The path may not be fully paved yet, but it’s definitely leading somewhere exciting.

Will says, “We’ve felt that wave of energy from the audience singing our words back at us, and that’s really influenced my lyrical style and our music instrumentally, which took a lot longer. 2022 was a sort of foundational year; I feel like this is the launch in 2023 into this next era of Lovejoy.”
