If you could have Taylor explain one of her songs to you, which one would you pick? She has to honestly answer all your questions about it and go through it line by line, telling you her references/inspiration and exactly what everything means.
I’ve thought about this and I keep going back to Coney Island because I’m selfishly curious if it’s about us. I’d love to hear her thoughts on it all even if it has nothing to do with us. I’ve always wondered why choose Coney Island? Is it a way to represent playing games on the outskirts? Like being close to what’s going on in the city but removed from it at the same time? Idk.
There are soooo many songs I’d love to hear her talk about. I can never confidently choose just one but this is the best I’ve got right now haha.

anyone else read this line from The Bolter to mean everything surrounding reputation, her sixth album?
By all accounts, she almost drowned when she was six in frigid water

So, the visual for Robin on Spotify is long grass rustling. This is probably a reference to "way to go, tiger" and all the tiger imagery Taylor has been invoking the last few years.
When people think of tigers, their first thoughts are usually of them as hunters, big cats, whatever . . . but one of the most distinctive features of the tiger is its stripes. That's what they're really known for. And those stripes exist as a camoflage mechanism - to allow them to blend into long grass and move through the world unseen.
It's not an accident that the visual Taylor chose to accompany a song about her little tiger, is of grass moving while something invisible passes through. This whole song is just screaming that it's about a child who is hidden in plain sight.
I do use Spotify so I did not know where to find the visual. If someone wants to add it or send the link in I would appreciate it.

One of the things that makes me think we're moving towards a coming-out again:
The sudden invocation of religious imagery on this album, and the sheer amount of references to it. For years, False God was the closest we had to those themes being touched on in any personal way - but The Anthology is FULL of them. I went through it track by track specifically listening out for them, and it was almost comical how heavy-handed she's being. Every single song it's sin and guilt and Christian judgement and Christian allegory 😂
I don't say this to belittle those struggles, or to suggest they haven't been real issues for Taylor. But I don't think that's where her head is at right now, so this sudden uptick of religious references in her music feels strategic. It's a move. And why would she need to establish religious guilt and judgement as something that is such A Big Deal for her and casts a shadow over her entire internal life?
She would if she needed something to point to, to "explain" why she stayed in the closet all this time. Taylor doesn't want to alienate her fans by saying "you were the reason" so this is her fallback. It's an age-old story, one fans can understand, that absolves them of any role in her closeting, and lets them convince themselves they would have supported her all along, if only they'd known.
Wow, this makes a lot of sense to me. Great observation, Anon.
“…let’s them convince themselves they would have supported her all along, if only they’d known.” 🤯

I want you to know
I'm a mirrorball
I'll show you every version of yourself tonight
I'll get you out on the floor
Shimmering beautiful
And when I break it's in a million pieces
i saw a facebook post about how the lyrics to BDILH are printed in different shapes in the booklet of each variant: the manuscript vinyl (and the phantom varient) with an hourglass, the albatross vinyl with a hexagon, the bolter CD with a circle, and the black dog CD has a square but the black dog vinyl has a diamond.
(these are the only copies i have access to, but the difference with the black dog variants makes me think there may be more shapes to discover?)
BDILH is the only song in the booklets stylized into a shape like this. i’m hoping we possibly have some geometry people in the chat? the best connection i can come up with is that each shape can be folded at least 2 different ways, maybe the same way song can be flipped to match at least two different “storylines.”
it’s very late where i am, and i’ve been pacing my room since i began this whole endeavor, so please let me know if i sound deranged ✨

Rewatching the Fortnight mv. The other people in the Tortured Poet's Department, at their typewriters all have blacked out faces and brimmed hats - like they're incognito. And they're sitting under fans. Anonymous fans, watching the magic alchemy Taylor and Post are creating in front of them, and typing?
Maybe they're not creating poems too - maybe they're documenting and creating analysis of what they're seeing. They're us?

Re: the LPSS scene where Taylor “reveals” WB to be JA
It’s so funny seeing the same grocery line Swifities who were fawning over this scene when it first came out now admit how awkward the whole thing is.
Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Honestly Tortured Poets Department the song and Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper feel pretty sonically similar too
I see it! So the question is - is it significant or just Jack’s style? Or both? 😂

I started buying Taylor vinyls without any way to play them (because I have no self control). I finally have a turntable and ??? no one told me it’s like having a private concert in your living room. It’s like someone added marshmallows to my already wonderful hot chocolate.

there's a bruce springsteen song, i think called the secret garden? that sounds SO much like YAIL but it's not credited as a sample, and actually listening closely you can tell it's not exactly the same, but it sure is damn close enough to make you feel like it is. and i wonder if that was intentional or just a coincidence ! the lyrics to his song are pretty interesting especially from a kaylor/gaylor perspective
Wow! You know I’ve never heard this song but the similarity to YAIL hit me right away. So interesting!
