Last night, the previously lost episode of Sesame Street, episode 847, infamous for its guest appearance of Margaret Hamilton reprising her role as the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, which received hundreds of letters from parents writing that their children had been terrified by the episode, prompting it to never be shown on television again, has been released online!

A video of the Wicked Witch segments of the episode was uploaded to Reddit on r/lostmedia by user sarsaparilla170170. Of which you can watch here.

man post-andor star wars feels so embarrassing

#I know I'm like fifteen years removed from the mandalorian's TA but watching that show has truly become a test of mettle #I don't want them to turn brow-furrowing serious with their politicking either. I get the camp it is GOING for. but there's no engine #there's less deep lessons to learn from andor than all that. simple story mechanics and letting drama drive your story instead of like #nothing burger plotlines that push meaningful moments aside instead of inviting them in. and badgering us with endless cameos #this is the golden goose outward-facing star war poster boy now I get it. has to be this way. but even THIS can be done better I feel #it is so lost up its own sauce I can't even comment on specific issues anymore. it's a stew of bad decisions and lack of clarity in #just about everything. even stagecraft feels stunted at this point. they felt like they were pushing the tool when they had frasier ADing.#now it's all so sickeningly stagnant. we are right back into 'no one feels like they live in the space they inhabit' except we learned #how to achieve that with in-camera CG. baller!#negativity #text #*DPing I think is what frasier was actually doing. and I do love the baby still so I am stuck in this sisyphean loop for the long haul #cant help myself the puppetry really is the one true standout in this whole shebang

spent the last hour and a half getting emotional watching the dark crystal while my cat also watches the dark crystal but specifically the small animal puppets as they move across the screen lmao

#but like. listen. they both . they both thought they lost everybody like them and then they found each other and . immediately .#castles fucking crumbling and jen fulfilled the prophecy but all he can do is weep holding kira in his arms #because despite everything it was her. someone like him after all those years that fit that missing piece he didnt even know of days before #'hold her. she is part of you as we are all part of each other' AHHHHHHHHHHHh #i'm still devastated about age of resistance for the way it got canceled so unfinished #but this movie.. just as a standalone.. everything to it.. oh my god #like you gotta consider JUST how much of a feat that movie was #i don't care if jim henson was disappointed with how it went that movie was a marvel of puppetry unlike anything prior #and the practical effects....ooohh boy #BUT AGAIN THE IMAGE OF THE CASTLE CRUMBLING AS JEN BURIES HIS FACE INTO KIRA AS IF SHES THE ONLY THING IN THE WORLD #it feels so queer. so so so queer. i don't know how to explain it but it just does #also idk why i was eh about this movie earlier like underwhelmed by the characters bc like WHAT !!#like ok i always loved aughra but jen and kira have seriously grown on me. i love them <3

I realize only today that I'm drowning, I've been for a long time without knowing, and now that I've reached the bottom I wonder if I'll ever get back up, all that I have doesn't matter anymore, I can't find true joy in anything, is this how it feels like to have lost one's self ?

Despite my attempts at grasping what's left of me I can't find anything, what will be of me ? Is all hope truly lost ? What I thought was improvement was only a delusion my mind created to distract me from my rotting self, now I find myself lost without a way back

Instead of discourse about showrunners and lesbians and whatever, I'm gonna bring a different type of discourse...whats ur fav and least Dr Whomst monsters. Hard mode: only the practical ones.

ok so I do like all the obvious ones, I like the angels, I like the vashta nerada, I like the not-things, I like the eternals. Here's a few deeper cuts (focusing on the tv show specifically):

they peaked with these maggots. they rock. pretty sure they're made with taxidermy? really great puppetry. I really like this thing:

what a cool design for this kind of forgotten midseason episode.

this is such a fun design for a langolier-type monster. I love how their crest and tail gives them the silhouette of a grim reaper

The 60s cybermen rock. I feel like they're hesitant to use them often in the modern show because they do look very 1960s but I think there's something really uncomfortable and evocative about the cloth faces that's lost when they're cool metallic robots. The mix between looking like an old diving suit and the implication of there being a chopped up person inside is gnarly and I love it. Simple, creepy, iconic design.

My favorite design in the show is probably this:

The 456 from the spinoff series torchwood. They didn't need the puppet to emote or move a ton since it spends the entire season in a little tank obscured in mist, so they just went crazy with the design and made it really bizarre looking. Extremely top tier alien. Anyways, negative. I really don't like this satan. the satan kind of sucks. the impossible planet is great atmospheric sci fi horror; every image of build up in it is haunting and leagues ahead of the climactic scene where he meets the satan. It singlehandedly kind of kills the vibe.

Personally I would have just kept the actual appearance off screen, just have it be eyes in the dark or something. Apparently they also tossed around the idea that it would end up being a normal little girl who was chained up in the cave and I think that would have visually fit the rest of the episode better.

I'm really not big on the modern design for the sea devils (the green one on the right). I think the classic ones clearly took a lot of direct influence from real animals and generally is a pretty thoughtfully realized design, the modern ones seem like they were first and foremost using the classic ones for reference and didn't quite capture the nuance of the design. Sad, as I would really like to see design for these guys with modern puppetry.

I think this is actually a pretty contentious opinion but the work of the specific studio who headed this redesign generally wasn't my favorite. Apparently there was some sort of major, semi public falling out between the fx studio that had been working on the show since 2005 and the people who started running the show in 2018, and they were briefly replaced with a much less experienced studio. No hate to them of course (I think this was actually their first job like, ever, and a lot of the work was done in crunch time?) but the difference did stand out to me:

THEY JUST GAVE THE FUCK UP AND SAID, HERE, ENJOY YOUR VERY OBVIOUSLY IMMERSION BREAKING PUPPETS LITERALLY FUCKING T A P D A N C I N G ACROSS THE TABLE FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT. AND I DID. I ENJOYED IT SO FUCKING MUCH. IMMERSION IS OVERRATED, I AM TIRED OF FRANK OZ’S UTTER GENIUS AT MAKING CREATURES MOVE REALISTICALLY, I WANT SOME FUCKING PUPPETS TAP DANCING FOR MY AMUSEMENT AND THE MANDALORIAN DELIVERED THIS IS WHAT STAR WARS IS ABOUT AND I LAUGHED UNTIL I CRIED WATCHING THIS SCENE

Astarion stared at the fire, leaning back against one of the boxes under his tent. There was something serene about this area—they’d never been attacked at camp, and it comforted him to know he could let his guard down somewhere. If only slightly.

He was so lost in thought that he didn’t notice you walking up to him until you spoke.

“Astarion?” you asked, voice softer than he expected. “Are you alright?”

He must have looked upset—he didn’t need your pity, though, so he tried to shake himself back to reality. “What can I do for you, my dear?” he asked, sitting up a bit straighter and taking a sip of the ale next to him.

You paused, looking at him with your eyebrows furrowed slightly, then finally decided to sit next to him. He offered the ale but you declined. Instead, you turned your body to face him and slowly, gently, brushed a bit of hair out of his face.

And he flinched.

You quickly pulled your hand away from him and rested it in your lap. He stared, wide-eyed, terrified of his own actions. He’d inflicted pain on countless others and never felt guilt for it, but such a simple gesture broke him.

“I’m sorry,” he says, voice small and quiet. It was unlike anything you’d ever seen before. Astarion was always so eccentric, so proud, so…unafraid. This was an entirely new side to him, and he was even more embarrassed to show it to you. He wanted to run, he wanted to hide, but he didn’t have the energy to make his feet move. To make anything move.

There was a beat of silence, where the two of you only listened to the crackling fire a few feet away. Then, you spoke. “You don’t have to apologize for anything.”

He didn’t understand how you could be so kind to him. There were so many things wrong with him as a person, or things from his past—he’d hurt people, tricked them, found ways for dear Cazador to turn them into mindless little puppets. Like he was, before all this mindflayer business.

There was so much wrong in the world, and there you sat. His ray of sunshine—his hope. Somehow with you, things seemed a little less dreary. True, there was some mystical dream-being that followed you around keeping everyone from sprouting tentacles, so that was something positive. But your general disposition, the way you smiled at him when you caught him staring at you, the way you snuck away from the rest of camp with him to watch the stars…all these things made him fall so hopelessly in love.

He couldn’t be that person for you, though. He never learned how to make big, romantic gestures or show his affection in a way that made sense. A way that made sure you knew he adored you in your best and worst moments. Cazador had ruined him—he’d ruined any semblance of having a normal life. On top of being a vampire spawn and ripped away from his life before, he was stuck in an endless loop of servitude and puppetry or constantly fearing for his life. He never learned or could afford, to just relax. You deserved someone who could love you whole-heartedly, not the monster he’d become.

“I care for you so, so deeply, my dear,” he all but whispered, voice tight with emotion.

“I know.”

“I cannot, for the life of me…” he trailed off, quickly wiping a tear from the corner of his eye. “I cannot understand why you care for me.”

His head hung low; you stared at him, shocked and unsure how to react to his words. He felt embarrassed, he felt small—there was nothing he could do, it seemed, to pull himself out of this rut he had himself stuck in lately.

Then he heard your words.

“Can I hug you, Astarion?”

He glanced over to you, seeing teh pleading look in your eyes. You’d asked. Maybe that made him feel a little more normal, a little less messed up. Hesitantly, he leaned into your embrace. The moment he felt the warmth of your arms around him, though, he melted. He laid his head on your chest, his full weight falling into you exponentially by the second. And with it, he began to cry.

It was heart-wrenching sobs that felt like someone stabbing him through the heart every time, but he couldn’t mistake the comfort of your hands running through his hair. The soothing, repetitive motion calmed his nerves more than he thought possible. After what felt like ages, he began to sit up, trying to put himself back together like that hadn’t just happened. His eyes looked slightly irritated, but he tried desperately to wipe any evidence of his outburst from his face—

Suddenly, he felt your hands around his face, thumbs running over his cheeks. He stopped—his hands slowly fell, and he relaxed into your embrace once again.

“You do not have to apologize for feeling things, Astarion,” you said softly. “And you certainly don’t have to hide from me. Not your thoughts, not your emotions.”

He nodded, turning his head slightly to the side to kiss the palm of your hand. His voice was hoarse but surprisingly gentle. “Thank you. I don’t deserve you.”

“That’s the thing. You do.”

He smiled softly—it had been a long time since he felt like he could do so freely.
