Nel 1916, il favoloso scrittore di origine irlandese Lord Dunsany pubblicò una antologia di racconti intitolata "Tales of Wonder". Uno dei racconti fu pubblicato per la prima volta in traduzione italiana solo nel 1969 sulla rivista "Pianeta": A Narrow Escape, con il titolo "Il mago contesta". Ho riportato il testo integrale e alcune notizie utili per chi vorrà leggere un autore più che attuale. Tra le mille cose anche ispiratore di Lovecraft.

@Inktober 52 Elf . One of my favorite books of all times is Lord Dunsany’s The King of Elfland’s Daughter. Lirazel is a beautiful elf princess wearing a crown of ice jewels when we first meet her. Yet throughout the story she is confronted by the ability to see the limitations of all, and the impotence to help due to her position. Sorrow seeps into her souls and so she is a sad princess of Elfland. . Inspired by the #Inktober52 prompt and the book, I decided to illustrate Lirazel as I imagine her, using Sailor Ink Studio 162 to convey the magic, love of nature and sorrow that are all parts of her. . The pens are @franklinchristoph 46 Italian ice with a Masuyama Needlepoint and a @Penbbs 456 F (for broader lines), both inked with 162. . Cuentos de un soñador, de Lord Dunsany. Me gusta mucho el lenguaje, ampuloso, recargado, necesario para crear esa atmósfera mágica que tienen muchos de los cuentos. Son relatos maravillosos, ambientados en el desierto, en oriente, en épocas remotas, sin tiempo. Los lugares y las personas tienen nombres extraños (Bethmoora, Zaccarath), y los dioses se mezclan con los hombres, las almas salen de los cuerpos, y los elementos naturales tienen una fuerza poderosísima. No me extraña que este autor fascinara a Borges, Lovecraft o Tolkien, todos ellos son extraordinarios creando universos. Favoritos : -Poltarnees, la que mira al mar. -En donde suben y bajan las mareas. (Bellísimo cuento sobre el tiempo) -Bethmoora -El hombre de haschisch. -Los mendigos. So... Will-o-the-Wisps, fairy lights, ghost lights call me. I don't remember how old I was when I first read The Kith of the Elf-Folk by Lord Dunsany but I held that story deep. The Wild Things of the swamp with their marsh lights burning bright in the dark, dancing to the distant bells from the tiny church, watching angels play on the golden chains of prayer to the sky.
