How to write about someone’s appearance? Their physique, styles, face , clothes,?
How to Describe a Character's Appearance
-> dabblewriter.com
-> link to Character Description Prompts
Avoid Over-Describing
Overloading readers with too much information can be overwhelming and make your characters feel flat and one-dimensional. Focus on the details that are the most important to the story and the characters themselves.
If the character's appearance is not central to the story, then you may only need to give a basic description. If it plays a significant role, you may want to go into more detail. Always keep the purpose of your physical descriptions in mind.
Show Don't Tell
Don't blatantly state every little thing about your character's appearance, but rather show it through their actions and behaviors.
example: If they are tall, show that through their actions. They have to duck to get under a doorway, they help someone reach the top shelf, etc.
Include Personality Traits
A character's personality is what makes them memorable. Consider their motivations, values, beliefs, and quirks and give them a well-defined personality.
Avoid Stereotypes
Create characters that are more than just their cultural, racial, ethnic, or gender identity. Give them unique interests, hobbies, and personalities. Allow them to have flaws, contradictions, and diverse perspectives.
External Features
External features include a character's height, weight, body type, and general appearance. You can describe their skin color, hair color, eye color, and any distinctive features like freckles or scars. This type of description gives the reader a basic understanding of what the character looks like, which is helpful in creating a mental image.
Clothing
Describing the type of clothing they wear, including the colors, patterns, and how they fit, can reveal a lot about a character’s personality and social status.
For example, a character who wears tailored suits and expensive shoes might be a little snobby and concerned with their image, while a character who wears ripped jeans and t-shirts might be casual and relaxed.
Facial Features
Facial features can be used to give the reader a more in-depth understanding of a character's personality and emotions. You can describe their smile, the way they frown, their cheekbones, and their jawline. You can also describe their eyebrows, the shape of their nose, and the size and shape of their eyes, which can give the reader insight into their emotions.
Body Language
Body language can be used to give the reader an understanding of a character's emotions and personality without the need for dialogue. Describing the way a character stands, walks, or gestures can reveal a lot about their confidence level, mood, and attitude.
For example, a character who slouches and avoids eye contact is likely to be shy, while a character who stands up straight and makes direct eye contact is likely to be confident.

Chapter 2-Initiation
The dark elf looked at the group, a smile on her face. “My, but we have an excellent group of young minds this year. I can’t wait to see what you do.” She gestured toward the blocky building behind her, and the group began its migration into the admissions building.
Michael stood for a moment, looking at the complex and the elven woman before he felt a small tap on his thigh. He looked down, seeing a face with large, violet eyes and shoulder-length pink hair looking back at him, her face framed by large, pointed ears with multiple hoops and crosses dangling from them. She was wearing a tight black t-shirt that stretched around her modest chest, emblazoned with “Super/Natural” in red letters on the front, and torn black jeans.
Whether those were a choice or she just couldn’t get new pants was anyone’s guess.
She pointed at the group. “You don’t want to be left behind.” Her face didn’t betray much emotion, and he couldn’t blame her.
He looked up, seeing the group heading in, the woman waiting patiently. “Right. Thanks.” He smiled, offering his hand, “Michael. Mike to friends.”
She looked at him, at his hand, then smirked. “Heather.” She answers, taking the hand. Her fingers ended in long, black claws, and on her wrists were an array of bracelets full of beads and charms.
He gestured towards the building. “Shall we, Heather?”
With a smile, they walked toward the building, much to the evident pleasure of the admissions advisor.
They entered the building through a glass door.
The  room they entered was long and rectangular, with large windows that let the morning sun in. To the left was a large lounge area, a coffee shop, and a library. To the right was a food court. In the center, a large, C shaped desk, behind which sat a few receptionists, staring at small standing mirrors with wooden frames, text and images flashing across the glass. The receptionists pointed the new students toward a wide-open double door behind them, a large sign reading “intake” next to it.
Behind the door was a multipurpose room. Curved seats lined the side closest to the door, each one slightly higher in a stair-step pattern, each with its own desk. The focus of the room was a raised platform carved with a permanent magic circle. At the edge of the circle, inside its own, was an altar, and on that altar is a crystal ball.
On the stage stood a tall high-elf woman in long white robes with gold edging. Her eyes were of a deep blue, her hair long and platinum, her ears sharply pointed and lobeless. She had a staff in her left hand, capped with a large gem and slowly shifting colors. In her left, she held a scroll.
A softly murmuring crowd of students gathered in front of the stage, looking at the circle, the altar, and the woman. The woman stepped forward, her staff thunking on the ground, and smiled down at them.
“Welcome, believers and future believers. I am Lady Cecilia, a priestess of the Light. Here, on your first day of adulthood, your future will be decided according to the Light’s needs, and together, we will make the future a better place. I am here to oversee.” She held up the scroll. It unrolled, levitating gently in front of her “When I call your name, touch the Altar of Fate and be placed.”
The tension mounted as she spoke. This was not because they were wowed they would not be accepted; no, it was about where they were going. Each student would be trained based on their strengths and weaknesses.
He looked down at his goblin friend. She had hope in her large, violet eyes.
“What are you hoping for?”
She looked at him. “That’s personal.”
He shrugged.
One by one, their names were called. They stepped up to the stage and were guided to the altar, laying their hands on the crystal ball. It lit up, and something flashed in front of their eyes. Each walked away looking satisfied, disappointed, indifferent.
Finally, it was Heather’s turn. She approached the altar, slightly taller than she was. Her green hand reached up, tentatively closed, then touched it. It flared to life. Her eyes danced across an invisible screen, and she grinned, baring sharp teeth. She practically skipped down from the stage.
“I take it you got it?”
She nodded.
“Good job.” He smiles, reaching out and laying a hand on her head.
She leans into it for just a moment before slapping his hand away, looking at him. “Don’t ever do that again.”
He raises his hands in surrender, still smiling.
“Michael Hunter.”
He went up to the altar, placing his hand on the crystal. It flashes.
Intuition: S
Logic: D
Spirit: A
Magic: Null
Strength: C
Endurance: B
Reading those scores, he knew. This was the end. He could feel the tears start to form in his eyes. He walked off the stage, trying not to look as heartbroken as he felt. He walked past the crowd, ignoring them.
Walking out of the building, he went to an out-of-the-way bench and quietly wept.
***
The ride home was long and quiet. He got on the transport and rode that wooden ship through the sky, watching the forest pass through the porthole by his seat. It didn’t seem nearly as enchanting this time. Heather was absent; she was taking a different route back to her clan.
When they arrived, Michael disembarked from the ramp, trudged his way along the stone path to the front door, and entered through the front. He walked past the living room, where his father, David, and his stepsister, Angela, looked up from their conversation. The enchanted mirror behind them displayed a dwarf crouched over a murdered pixie about to make a very inappropriate pun.
Father looked up from beneath shaggy brown hair, peering at him through brown eyes. He was a large man; broad of shoulder, arm, and build. Everything about him spoke of a past muscularity that had long since softened, leaving him with a round belly and arms the size of tree trunks.  He was wearing slacks and a polo shirt.
His older sister was the opposite; taller than him, skinny, with long, curly, strawberry blond hair, she had green eyes and was covered head to toe in freckles. She was wearing a pale green dress that came down to her ankles. She smiled upon seeing him, her eyes sparkling, but that quickly faded after seeing the look of melancholy on his face.
“How’d it go?” His dad asked, the concern apparent in his voice.
Michael didn’t answer, walking up the stairs and to his room, collapsin on the bed.
After a few minutes, there was a quiet knock on the door.
“Can I come in?”
The voice was Angela’s. When he didn’t answer, she let herself in.
When she entered, she found him face down on the bed. He didn’t acknowledge her, though he surely knew she was there. She laid down next to him, putting an arm across his back. She didn’t say anything. Nor did Michael, feeling the warmth and comfort of his older sister. After a time, he put an arm across her, pulling her close and enjoying her company.
“What happened?” she asked, looking at him.
“Failed.”
She frowned, stroking his hair like she had been doing for years. He turned, looking at her, their faces almost touching. His eyes were red-rimmed and moist, but he wasn’t crying.
“What can I do?” She asked, finally.
He shrugged. “There’s nothing you can do. I can’t either. Only thing we can do is keep trying.”
She nodded. They lay there for some time, just enjoying the moment.
Author’s notes:
How about that stepsister, eh?
Around this point, I made a few changes. Like, yes, the ship being wood.
In the following chapters, things will change because I started outlining more. I have a better grasp of the story, and I hope you will stick around for it.
Next episode: We will be getting to know Angela and talking more to le dryad, and you will finally get to know her name and how she ties into the story, yay!

I don’t know if I can make this funny, hang on, or light a candle for us on this journey- I’ve been reading through all these symptoms and physical identifiers for this syndrome my pcp mentioned and one of them was “lobeless ears”. I was immediately reminded about the brief time that abeariknow and I dated and well he has got a lot of lobe and I remember mentioning, “we have very different ears.” And I found it fascinating.
My lobes are pretty small and I was just like, “am I lobeless??? Is Bear the normal one of the two of us? Goddamn it!”
I think I have small attached lobes but I am lobed nonetheless.

Tellurian Tails | 6-24-22
[Image description: Concept art exploring the function of the tail in a jerboa-like alien design. The tail is used for both balance and grasping objects. Its prehensile tip has a spade-shaped muscular hydrostat. Detailed transcript below cut. End ID.]
.
A closer look at tellurian tails! I’ve taken inspiration from the way jerboas use their tails, spider monkeys, and stable chicken heads.
(These illustrations are all mine, but I commissioned some sketches from @bethdehart to help me sort out some design details before I got to this point! They had the very fun idea of splitting the tail tip so that it would have multiple graspers; I adapted their idea from a symmetrical radial design to something more thumb-like, because I was still attached to my original leaf-shaped concept. xD)
.
Transcription:
Stabilization reflex: Tail tip instinctively stays very steady during movement. A cup of water can be carried while jumping without spilling.
Tail will often press against the ground for balance.
Detailed image description:
The tellurian is a bipedal mouse-like creature with very long ears, a very long tail, and digitigrade kangaroo-like legs. It has glowing whiskers and a stiff glowing structure at the tips of its ears.
The tail is furred everywhere except the ‘palm’ of its grasping tip. Its grasping tip has one main central lobe, plus two smaller lobes on either side. In a relaxed position they are held together into the general shape of a lobeless elliptical leaf with a pointed tip. They spread apart into a trefoil shape, and can curl closed or touch tips to tips.
The palm of the tail faces down towards the ground in its neutral position, but the tail can be twisted so that the palm faces upwards as well.

today I realized: I've been writing the skull in the jar (Lockwood & Co) the same way I'd write a ferengi (Star Trek). I only noticed because I had Skull calling people "lobeless" and went wait. that's not a real insult that's just DS9 lmfao

Due to a congenital malformation in the structure of his ears (which are lobeless), Sameer is hard of hearing. Because of this, he's learned to rely on lip reading and context clues for verbal conversation. That being said, due to his snake genetics, he's also highly sensitive to vibrations, allowing him to compensate in close ranges as well as "hear" himself enough to speak clearly. He additionally has special boots where the pad and heel are thin so he can feel vibrations in the ground, the same reason he wears fingerless gloves.

Adam Jensen has the cutest goddamn ears I've ever seen on a man, seriously, I could recognize them in a fucking crowd and I'd know they were his, so angular, so him, so perfect.
That sharp curve in the cartilage, his ever so slightly lobeless lobes...
*Sigh* So cute...

what i want in my picrew, please let me know if i missed anything important. i might combine some of these options or put them in the colours section instead. i encourage you to correct me on my kanji too! its intended to be the icon symbols which is why i’ve tried my hardest to avoid hiragana/katakana but i will draw the icons if i have to
肌 - 16 skin tones. i’ve made a large variety of shades which aren’t “porcelain” and “my old Beko refrigerator”
体 - 3 body types. i have to take into consideration how much time and effort it takes to redraw clothes so i cant be too ambitious.
頭 - head types (technically jaw and chin size)
耳1 - ears. lobeless, lobed and large lobes (for plugs!) pointed and malformed variants would be nice, space allowing.
目 - eye types, comes in monolids and double lids. if i have enough space, i will make these into separate left-right categories. i dont want to subject people to the mortifying ordeal of having two eyes. if so, i’ll add an “empty socket” variant.
鼻 - nose! two levels of nose definitions. saddle, hooked, yugioh circa 2005 nose, etc. “missing nose” is also an option.
口- mouth! several lip variants applied. alternatively you can just not have lips. no upper lip? no lower lip? both?
眉 - eyebrows, several thickness and style variants (ie. Hikimayu).
前髪1- fringe. i understand this to be “forelocks” or “bangs”. the forehead hair.
前髪2 - bangs. these should be... the hair in front of the ears?
髪1- main hair thingy. the back portion. i want a variety of textures and lengths.
髪2 - ponytails, again wid variety.
宗教 - religious. kippah, mitpachat, hijab, al-amira, shayla
母斑 - birthmarks, vitiligo, firemarks
傷 - blemish, from freckles to moles to acne to dark circles
損傷 - injury, several variants of scars. burn scars to animal attacks to surgery scars.
穿刺 - piercings. eyebrow, antibrow, bridge, septal, nostril, jestrum, bites, labrets
耳(穿刺) - ear piercings! single lobed, double lobed, even triples. plugs optional + lobes
首1 - necklaces. pendants, stim toys, locket, or none
首2- collars/chokers. lace, leather (ring, spike, buckle, or none)
下 - undershirts! mesh tops, sports bras, bras, vests, binders, latex vests
上着 - overshirt/jacket! fur jacket, format jacket, leather jacket, denim jacket, baseball jacket, dungarees
着? - shirts! graphic tees, muscle tees, formal shirts (long n short sleeves), sweaters
cant think of these/suggests
部品 - accessories! gimme suggests
i’ll put glasses sumwhere.... this post is getting very tiring to write
facial hair (thank u alex!)
entire arms? (thank u rae!) did want to include a variety like missing limbs. its polite. but i dont know how i’m gonna shape overwear around the arms
