A wonderfully fabulous evening with great music and brilliant performances from Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen, soloist Sheku Kanneh-Mason playing a cello 300 years older than he is, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Singers, organist and composer James B. Wilson, and... of course the enthusiastic crowd... all led by conductor Marin Alsop.
The best part for me... and probably everybody else who attended the concert, was the "audience participation" sequence: a medley of British sea songs, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. The concert concluded with God Save The King, followed by a chorus of Auld Lang Syne.
Personally, I had a fantastic time and found the evening exhilarating. But, I also felt very emotional. Being a silly old fool, the patriotic songs always bring a little tear to my eye... but, last night my emotions were heightened by memories of my dear cousin Richard.
Before he passed away in April 2022, Richard used his contacts in the BBC to procure us a box at Last Night of The Proms. When his will was read, in regard to me he said, "There is no point in leaving you any money, you will only waste it on Scotch whisky or Champagne! Instead, I give you something that I know you will truly enjoy..." "...Sing your heart out in memory of me!"
Last year's Last Night was cancelled due to the death of Her Majesty The Queen. As our tickets were not obtained through the usual channels, I thought we had lost our opportunity and suggested that we hold our own Proms party in 2023.
Tom (Richard's son) was more upset about me not being able to attend the concert than I was. He went through his dad's correspondence and address book and contacted several of Richard's BBC "friends". The matter was quickly resolved, and we were promised a VIP Guest Box for Last Night Of The Proms 2023. (Well done you, Tom... and thank you to Richard's BBC friends.)
I did sing my heart out... although my voice cracked at one point as tears began to flow. I sat down for a few seconds to regain my composure, before singing the best and loudest tenor voice rendition of Land Of Hope And Glory that anybody has ever heard!
Thank you dear Richard. It was a night I will never forget!

could you please share your opera thoughts recently?
I can try! unfortunately I haven't been thinking about opera quite as much as about other things lately, for reasons of having started, as they say, "dissertating," which in my case means thinking mostly about shakespeare. but I have been seeing some opera, beyond what I've reviewed! in recent weeks I've seen Lohengrin and Rosenkavalier at the Met and liked the singing in both a ton, although the Lohengrin staging was. mm. bad. Rosenkav was amazing and made me cry uncontrollably but it did kind of spark the main opera thought I've been having lately which is, isn't so crazy how you aren't allowed to cut shit for time in opera? I got into opera after already having spent several years working on shakespeare productions, where it's the norm to cut the text, so it still kind of blows my mind that I can go see rosenkav specifically for the experience of having lise davidsen vibrate my back molars with her voice and then have to, like, check my watch repeatedly through hours of tired, repetitive ochs schtick. I dunno. I want to be thinking about how to envision/actualize a world in which we are performing opera free from the discourses of authorship, authority, archive, and canonicity that currently completely dominate the art form.
anyways, i am seeing the new don giovanni on friday and i will be reviewing it so more opera thoughts will be coming soon <3

Ooh! I went to "Der Rosenkavalier" at the Met for my birthday once, too. The friend I hauled with me said why didn't I warn her it was eleven hours long and had nothing she could hum — I hope your housemate was more appreciative of Strauss's lyrical bounty. >.>
She was! Both of us are big Rosenkav and Erin Morley fans (and Lise Davidsen fans too now).

music I actually listen to tag
I was tagged by @partheniasimblr and @taanoir, thank you both! 💖
🎶✨ When you get this, you have to write down 5 songs you actually  listen to and post them. Then send this (ask or tag) to 10 cool ppl✨🎶
I listen to a lot (actually), so how can I choose only five songs?! Well, today I looked up a few songs on YouTube, for different reasons. Here they are:
Vasilis Lekkas - Mana mou Hellas - so I can cry for all people who are hit by earthquakes, climate change, war, oppression or any other catastrophe.
ISÁK - Máze - to celebrate the Sámi National Day (6 February)
Lise Davidsen/Leif Ove Andsnes - Våren - because I’m longing for spring, and Lise has such an incredible, beautiful voice
Locomondo - Den kanei kryo sthn Ellada - because I’m cold and homesick
Les Percussions de Kouroussa - because we need to listen to the drums, and dance!
If anyone of my followers or friends haven’t done this yet, and want to do it, consider yourself tagged!

PERALADA 2022: LISE DAVIDSEN
PERALADA 2022: LISE DAVIDSEN
LIse Davidsen.
