last year i had my entire drabble-a-day december fic prepped and ready but this year i am in grad school and writing a lot of papers and also just moved but i'm determined to do this! insanely the later ones (like the days closer to christmas) have been easier to write than the early ones but if i can get at least half pre-written before december 1 then we will be rockin and rollin

Honestly, Steve didn’t play his games often.

He preferred to spend his free time with you, or see his friends outside of work, out of a phone screen, in front of him instead of through a text message. But on the days that it rained, Indiana turning inky and navy with clouds and puddles, he liked to stay indoors, cotton sweats and warm hoodie on, headset over bed mussed hair and his controller in his hand.

You’d usually leave him be, smiling and rolling your eyes as he yelled at his losses and talked shit to Eddie and Dustin, scolding Mike and asking, ‘do you kiss El with that mouth, Wheeler?’

But when noon rolled into evening and dusk settled over the town and your apartment, you’d run out of episodes of Schitt’s Creek to rewatch and your affection metre was running low. It wasn’t like Steve kicked you out of the spare room that he kept his computer and gaming consoles in, there just wasn’t that much room for you to join him in it. His stupid chair took up much of the floor space, his desk holding a too big monitor and games lined the shelves he’d fixed to the walls.

So when you crept in mid battle royale, Steve let his eyes stray from the screen to linger over you, smiling at his old high school hoodie that hung from your frame, your leggings that you’d tucked into fluffy socks. He was all pinked cheek and messy haired, the annoyance of losing to Dustin for the fifth time getting him all worked up and he looked so pretty. And besides, there really wasn’t anywhere else to sit apart from on his lap.

You felt his grin pressed to your cheek as you clambered into him, legs on either side of his hips as you carefully manoeuvred your way under his arms, trying your best to not make him let go of the controller. Steve hummed in appreciation when you buried your face into the crook of his neck, whispering a sweet “hi, gorgeous,” to you as you settled against him.

You hummed right back, pressing a kiss to his neck and snorting when you heard Eddie’s tinny voice through the earpiece of his headset, a garbled cackle and a ‘flirt with me all you want, Harrington, I’m still kicking your ass.’

You didn’t have to look at Steve to know he was rolling his eyes, his arms tightening around you, muscles flexing as he jabbed at buttons in a pattern you didn’t know the significance of. He huffed at his friend, explaining to the group that you were here, like that’s all they needed to know.

The bets commenced soon after, a din of laughter and teasing, each boy insisting on the time that Steve would dip now they knew you were with him. Eddie told him he was whipped, Will booed loudly in the background and Lucas asked if Steve planned on winning a round to at least try to impress you.

Steve ignored all of them, smiling only ‘cause he felt yours against his neck, your soft laughter shaking your shoulders and he planted a row of kisses along your cheek in response, realising how much he’d missed you now that you were in his arms. He felt guilty, like he’d neglected you all day. And when he told you as such, you shook your head and managed to catch the corner of his mouth in a kiss.

“I know, you’re awful,” you told him, trying your best to sound serious. “I’ve been wasting away downstairs, all alone.”

“Poor girl,” he grinned, abandoning his controller in order to tug you closer, one warm hand sneaking up the back of your hoodie, fingers tracing over the bumps of your spine. “Should’ve come and told me off.”

“I’d rather manhandle you and demand attention,” you murmured, cheeks burning when you realised you were speaking too close to the microphone on Steve’s headset, a dulled chorus of gagging noises and ‘get a room,’ yelled back at you.

You huffed but grinned, when Steve told them all off, explosions on the screen garnering their attention once more. You wiggled, getting comfy, nosing along the line of Steve’s jaw, happy when he let out a stuttered sigh.

“Jus’ gonna finish this round, ‘kay?” He asked you quietly, and you knew he’d switch it off mid match if you asked him too.

But you nodded, happy to just be close, smiling at the yells of your friends that could be heard through the headset everytime Steve missed a target ‘cause he was too busy stroking lines over your bare skin to be bothered. And when he finally managed to catch up to Eddie’s character, taking down whatever monster/boss/alien thing it was they were fighting, you were letting sleep tug at you, Steve’s aftershave and the scent of your laundry detergent clinging to his clothes. You barely heard him say his goodbyes, the clamouring of voices that yelled ‘told you so, pay up a Munson,’ as he signed off.

You hummed, sleepy, unfocused as Steve kissed over your hair and cheeks, doing his best to coax you awake before he gave in entirely and stood, arms tucked under your butt to keep you close. You squeaked at the sudden movement, grumbling something that sounded like his name into his neck but you wrapped your legs around him all the same, still just happy to be close as he made his way to your shared bedroom, more than ready to give you all the attention you deserved from him.

3 fics didn't have a title sourced from anywhere. 3 were sourced from literature/poetry, 3 were puns, and the remaining 15 were song lyrics, with 3 each from Taylor Swift and Matt Nathanson.

My highest kudos/hits ratio was on Empty your heart of its mortal dream, aka the Fae Prince Henry fic.

I have a lot -- a lot a lot a LOT -- of WIPs that will be completed in 2024, so please don't think of this as an exhaustive list, but they are the ones I'm most excited for:

A Practical Arrangement - @clottedcreamfudge has Devised A Punishment if I don't get chapter two out for y'all by Christmas because my usual methods of pushing past my brain bullshit weren't working, so technically this is a 2023 project 🤣 @ships-to-sail and @celeritas2997 have the carrot and CCF has the stick.

Anastasia AU!!! I LOVE this fic and I think it's in the 'meaty one-shot' range buuuuuut we'll see. It might get a little out of control.

Angstapalooza RWRB edition - this is gonna be another long fic, 10-11 chapters, 50k words ish, and I cannot WAIT to make y'all cry sink my teeth into it. My Schitt's Creeks babes know what happens when I deem something 'angstapalooza' lmao.

Hockey Boyfriend Henry part 3, aka the whole reason I started writing the fucking series in the first place lmao

Leverage AU, which I haven't shared anything of yet because it's a post-angstapalooza longfic but I am VERY HYPE FOR.

Rafael Is Surrounded By Disaster Queers, aka the Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead-style Rafael POV... 5+1? Vignettes? set in the Much Ado actor AU verse. Which at this point is just a gift for @inexplicablymine and @cricketnationrise and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hi, friends!

As some of you know, I've been through a lot of changes this year... and one of those changes involved a lot of thinky-thoughts about gender and coming to the realization that I'm demi-femme (or genderqueer; I use both terms). I started using she/they pronouns, which I'm really comfy with, but I've been thinking a lot lately about wanting a more gender-neutral name that represents all of me... and this is the safest place for me to explore that.

As Charlie Spring would tell me, I don't owe anyone an explanation re: my gender or why I'm changing my name, but I actually want to open up a bit. I'm just going to do it under the cut below.

However, the tldr is this: I'm not a girl, but I'm not NOT a girl (hope that helps!!). I'm gonna start going by Stevie in online spaces because it better fits the person I'm becoming. I've changed my URL here, my ao3 username, and my nicknames on Discord. I love each and every one of you for cultivating a space where I can explore what being demi-femme means to me, since I'm not quite in a place to change my inherently feminine government name IRL.

cw for talk about both gender and losing my dad (spoiler alert — I didn't choose Stevie for Stevie Budd, as precious as she is to me):

The name "Petal" being pretty feminine is something that's been on my mind for a while now, and I thought pretty hard about what name felt most like me. When the name Stevie popped into my head, it was because of Schitt's Creek... but something else clicked right after.

It was my dad's name.

(Well, his name was Steve, anyway.)

And, while we had our differences over the years, he was the first person in my family to wholeheartedly support me when I came out. I told him I was a lesbian and he was literally like, "Cool. You want pizza for dinner, or...?" Yeah. Didn't bat an eye. Especially given that he passed in June, of all months, it feels like a fitting tribute to take his name with me on this journey.

For me, the gender spectrum is complicated. It's a place I'm still learning to navigate... and that's why I'm choosing a name that feels like it suits me wherever I happen to be on the slider at any given time. Having a place where I can make these kinds of changes and do some self-exploration is just... like... I don't have the words to articulate how much that means to me.

This community has been nothing but wonderful every step of the way here. Hell, this community half the reason I felt safe and comfortable enough to start doing all this self-reflection in the first place. So, thank you for that.

I know referring to me by a different name is gonna take some adjustment, but that's okay!

Just like I am both she and they, Petal is a part of me, too... It's just not all of me. I want to introduce myself with a name that fits like a comfy sweater, rather than a dress that I only wear on certain days. Y'know?

(And, really, this is more about me needing a space to safely explore some gender neutrality when I can't IRL than it is my being uncomfortable with the name Petal. So, don't stress about it.)

I hope that makes sense outside of my head... but I guess it's also okay if it doesn't.

Good Vibes Tuesday

Like so many of you, I was struck by reading everyone’s Mournful Monday posts - not just by the way so many of us are struggling in so many different ways, but by the kindness and grace that accompanied the reflection and responses to everyone else; the notes to encourage us to keep going, to remind us why we write, that what we say and do matters to others, that we matter.

So this good vibes Tuesday (it is Wednesday for me, as always, I live in the future), the thing that makes me happy about fandom today is this fandom - Schitt’s Creek fandom specifically, aka you.

I know that there have been issues within the fandom from time to time: across platforms, in the form of anons trying to cause Drama™, due personal conflicts etc. No fandom is ever completely drama free. But for the most part? This fandom is a safe space. It’s a fandom where I’ve made life long friends, a place that helped me to rediscover a creative side to myself that had been lost for 20-odd years (yes, I am that old), a place that led me to find other fandoms and friends whom I adore and could not be without. 

The thing about this fandom though, the thing that is noticeable to those outside it, the thing that is commented on, is that it really is a community based in kindness.

Our beautiful show ended years ago and yet we are still here with fandom surveys, incredibly well organised writing events, weekly drabbles to keep us inspired, photos of the day and polls and ask games. There are events to encourage people to read older, or lesser known fics and to leave comments for authors. We are gifted with amazing infographics, fun stickers and fan art and gif sets. And, occasionally, we follow each other into new fandoms too.

There is SO MUCH incredible writing produced in this fandom and the way that writers are embraced and encouraged because fandom is a community and not a competition is truly heartwarming.

Maybe this shouldn’t be a surprise, not when we’re here for the love of a show that is rooted in showing the importance of love and kindness, not when Dan Levy’s message is to love unconditionally and out loud, that kindness always wins. 

So thank you, all of you, for making this fandom what it is 💖

3. Have you received any bookmark notes? Which is your favorite and why?

Absolutely! Just a few of my many faves include: the person who bookmarked fae prince Henry with the note "Alex is a peasant boy and Henry is a faerie who is very much into consent" which is both completely true and just such a hilarious summary of that fic. So, so many incredible bookmark notes on the actor AU that made me weep, and one hilarious one that said something about printing it on papyrus and handing it down to their children—I hope desperately that that person discovers ficbinding. The Schitt's Creek pole dancing/pole instructor AU has one that's like "the concept that shouldn't work as well as it does". So, so many more, probably, but those are the ones that stick out.

I started rambling about the fic community as a whole and then I realised this question specifies "being a fic WRITER" so I'm pulling it back lol. So: I love how much depth and richness there is to the RWRB characters which gives me so much to explore as a writer. I used to be someone who really struggled writing full AUs, but I find that I have a really good sense of what makes these characters who they are and so whether I'm writing them in college, as actors, as fae princes and peasants... whatever it is, I'm still writing THEM. And that's a really lovely feeling as a writer.

8. Talk about any friends/connections you've made as a fic writer.

God where the fuck do I START. This is gonna be like an Oscars speech where I inevitably forget some really important fucking people lmao. @ships-to-sail my dream team collaborator and someone I will fight DoorDash at 3am to send soup to their house when they're sick lol. @celeritas2997 was the first person to reach out privately when I started writing RWRB—I'd only interacted with her in the comment section of my fics before that and now she's a very dear friend. @clottedcreamfudge is someone I just clicked with immediately and now talking to her bookends most days (timezones are a scam lol). I went to Disneyland and Noah Reid with @nontoxic-writes @lilythesilly @reginahalliwell a few months ago and it was AMAZING. @minerforaheartofgold we discovered very early in our shared Schitt's Creek space that Aotearoa is SMALL and there was one hell of a venn diagram overlap between our friends, and now they're someone I'll always go out of my way to see when we're in the same part of NZ (and go to Harry Styles with).

But also like... all y'all? Anyone I've ever had a back and forth with in the comments section, flailed in the reblog tags with, DMed... fandom is community, I'll bang this drum until the drum breaks, and every single one of you makes my little corner of this community better.

Are there any fellow Schittheads here? B/c the landmark historic building made famous by the much-loved Canadian TV show Schitt’s Creek has hit the market for $2.35M.

Schittheads will remember this place fondly as David’s boutique store, the Rose Apothecary. Oh, if I had the money I would buy it, b/c I’m real Schitthead. I watch the reruns every night. 

The commercial building is attached to a large brick home and the combination takes up the whole corner block in Goodwood, Ontario, Canada.

The storefront made famous by Schitt’s Creek is accessible from inside the house and is full of charm.

The 2nd fl. has an art gallery/studio.

And, speaking of charm, look at the house. 

Isn’t this lovely? Does the vintage bakery display case on the left convey?

Large country kitchen. 

This is a breezeway addition. Isn’t it a beautiful space?

Canadian real estate listings rarely put the age of the home or building, but it looks like it could’ve been built in the 1880s to 1890s. 

It has 3 beautiful bedrooms and 2 very nice baths, plus a half bath in the art studio.

Pretty, green backyard and a nice big porch. 

You can see how large the building is and where the breezeway addition is wedged between. 

It’s a wonderful property, but owning and living in such a beloved Canadian cultural icon, means welcoming other fellow Schittheads who made the trip to visit.
