Twenty Questions for Fic Writers

Tagged in this by the incredible @pellaaearien . Thank you so much, dear! I really did start working on it when you tagged me and have picked away at it ever since. It’s quite long!

1. How many works do you have on Ao3?

2. What's your total Ao3 word count?

122,560. I write short things.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

In chronological order I have written:

In theory I’m open to writing in any of those again and any others as the inspiration strikes.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5 - Worship (Sandman, Dreamling), also received the comment that inspired my first tumblr post to breach containment.

4 - Who He Is (Mystrade), my first fic on ao3 besides the ones I moved to the Other Account. I’m a bit surprised by this honestly. It’s got age on its side but my writing has improved a lot since then. It reads as a bit clunky to me now.

3 - Loverboy (Sandman, Dreamling + Matthew the Emotional Support Raven), first time I brought my 2 Sandman series together and my first multi chap Sandman fic.

2 - The Century Gentleman (Sandman, Dreamling), I got this written and posted pretty soon after the show aired when there was a massive demand for Dreamling content and before there was a tidal wave of content to meet the demand. I have mixed feelings about it now.

1 - Sort It (James Bond & Sherlock crossover, 00Q + Mystrade), fills the niche of “Q is a Holmes brother” + fluffy Mystrade. I do still really love this story.

5. Do you respond to comments?

My rule is that I do. And I’ve generally been very diligent about it. But I burnt out a little while writing Grave and I currently have an embarrassing number of unread comments in my ao3 inbox that I keep telling myself that I need to respond to…

So if folks have commented on my stuff in the last month or so, I’m very sorry I haven’t responded.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Sequenced Proposals. No contest. Look, the character is terminally ill in canon and it’s a lawyer AU so it wasn’t going to end with him becoming a cyborg. I cried a lot while writing it. Apparently a lot of people cried while reading it. Technically he’s still alive when the story ends.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

With the one notable exception discussed above I pretty much exclusively write warm, fluffy, occasionally funny stuff. They pretty much all end happily. I am a quokka of fan fiction.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I haven’t! Someone called me a bitch in a Sequenced Proposals comment but even though we had never interacted before, they meant it positively.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not on this account. 😏

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I’ve written 2: Sort It, as mentioned above, and Dreaming of Leverage, which is a Sandman & Leverage crossover. I’d say the latter is crazier.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nooooo. And I can’t see ever doing it. Writing is very much a solo activity for me.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

I can’t pick a favorite. I adore every ship I’ve written.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I will probably not finish Law School Days. I know how the story ends and that’s good enough for me and no one was clamoring for it. I still like to think I’ll finish Lonely Two-Legged Creatures some day.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I’m good at dialogue, especially dialogue in which characters talk about their feeeeeelings. I guess I’m also good at emotional intelligence in stories. And creating the warm & fuzzies.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot and description. I almost exclusively write very short things because I am incapable of plot that would carry a longer story. Also, if I’m being honest, one of the things I like about writing fan fiction is that I don’t have to describe what anyone looks like or sounds like! Y’all know that already. But I do get the flop sweats if I have to describe someone wearing clothing that is not a t-shirt and jeans.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I wish I could! More than 15 years ago I was basically conversational in Spanish, but now I’m functionally monolingual. I do appreciate when people who do this provide translations.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

As a kid, before I knew what fan fiction was, I wrote at least 100 pages of what was essentially OCs in Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar. The first fandom I intentionally wrote and posted fic for was Mystrade.

20. Favourite fic you've written?

Can’t do this, sorry. There are some of my stories that no longer resonate with me the way they did when I wrote them, but they’re in the minority and of the rest it’s impossible to pick a favorite.

The "Timeline"

The Sherlock Timeline with shipping goggles set to Mystrade.

(Please feel free to add on to this if I missed anything!)

(I also apologise for any spelling errors.)

Pre-season 1 / Pre-canon

We don't know exactly how Lestrade and Sherlock met, but enough headcanons have convinced me that William here walked onto a crime scene, and Greg decided to believe in him. (of course, granted he get off drugs, as most headcanons have said.)

In the pilot, Mycroft interrogated John within a day of knowing Sherlock. We can assume that he'd do the same with anyone that walked into his brother's life... meaning that he must have done a similar interrogation with Greg.

Like I said, we don't know much about pre-canon, including when Sherlock and Lestrade met. Despite this, I believe that it's possible that Lestrade had to have become somewhat acquainted with Mycroft. Whether or not a relationship beyond platonic began here is up to you.

Season 1

At the end of A Study in Pink, Mycroft and Lestrade know that Sherlock now has a flatmate that will be there for him. As we know, both Mycroft and Greg are protective of Sherlock, almost like parental figures. (why do you think we keep calling him Papa Lestrade?)

So having John walk into Sherlock's life is kind of the equivalent to overworked parents getting a babysitter.

This is where The Blind Banker comes in.

I'm pretty sure that another tumblr, @dalec, mentioned it before, but there is no way that the two didn't go on some nice holiday during the entire episode, seeing as they weren't there at all.

I don't think there's anything to work with in The Great Game, so I'll just skip over to...

Season 2

Ah yes. The peak of the show, in my personal opinion.

Once again, although Mycroft made an appearance in this episode quite a couple of times (6, if i'm correct) I don't think there's any details to point out here, except for the fact that we know that Greg and his wife are separated/divorced. (Christmas party.)

Now... Hounds of Baskerville.

This episode marked a very important moment (if not the catalyst) of Mystrade.

Fact: Sherlock (and the audience) know that Lestrade went on a holiday.

Fact: We know that Mycroft asked Lestrade to look after his brother.

Fact: It's confirmed that Mycroft and Lestrade s p o k e to each other.

So, we know that Lestrade went on holiday after what we can assume is his divorce.

So who do you think he went with?

Alone? That's likely. But having him go with Mycroft on another holiday makes more sense.

Moving on from HoB, we meet ourselves at The Reichenbach Fall. The events that happened here are very significant. If Mycroft and Lestrade ever had a relationship, this episode complicated things to the max.

So, sad times for about 2 years. We now go to...

Season 3

So Sherlock's alive, and now everyone knows. If you follow the storyline of "Mycroft and Greg were together for those 2 sad years" then you better believe that there. Will. Be. Problems.

If you don't think they were together at this point, that's also fine. But you have to admit that even if they were just friends, Greg must've felt betrayed. (I'm not gonna say that it's groundwork for an angsty fic, but it's groundwork for an angsty fic.)

Okay, onto The Sign of Three.

John and Mary's wedding, lots of people are there, including Lestrade, and excluding Mycroft.

There was a headcanon I saw that said that the reason he didn't go was because if he did, then Sherlock would deduce that Mycroft and Lestrade were hooking up/dating.

Another post on Tumblr said that Greg was disappointed not to see Mycroft at the wedding, and he decided to drink the night away to cope.

Both of these I love.

ALSO I can't mention TSoT without mentioning the tie thing.

I know people already said that the two ties have different patterns, but I still had to mention it.

Now... His Last Vow. Another historical moment because...

you guessed it, our two favorite idiots were in a scene together for the first time.

Yes, Mycroft waves Lestrade away, like, right after he speaks, but. There. Was. Definitely. A. Moment.

Maybe.

Okay, now's time for...

The Abominable Bride

Graveyard scene. Just... graveyard scene.

Season 4

Once again, Mycroft and Lestrade are in the same scene together, BUT there is another thing to point out from earlier in the episode.

Sherlock points out that Lestrade is going on a date with "The Brunette," who is supposedly a woman.

Okay, sure.

I like to believe he was going on a date with Mycroft, but do with that information what you will.

(Btw thank you @lavenderandvanilla for your fic using this idea.)

I don't think that The Lying Detective gives us anything to work with, aside from the setup to a hurt/comfort fic, like the one written by @smartforholmes.

And with that, we move to The Final Problem.

Mycroft has a traumatizing night at his house, The Bakerstreet Boys are kidnapped by Eurus, but they make it out alive, so everything's okay. /s

As we all know, this episode marks the final historical moment of this ship:

"Oh, and Mycroft. Make sure he's looked after. He's not as strong as he thinks he is."

"I'll take care of it."

I'll take care of it.

Repeat, Greg Lestrade will take care of it. And by it, he means Mycroft.

Greg Lestrade will take care of Mycroft.

Conclusion:

Gay.

1. Honestly, I go with bi--in the sense that he honestly wouldn’t care about the sex of the person, but rather their nature. I think Sherlock is likely the same way.

2. Hmm. That’s a tough one. You know, I don’t hate Mystrade--if you’ve ever read “Constantinople Falls”, that’s the way I could see them being, and I’ve seen some exceptional other stories in that genre that work very well indeed. But, yannow, I kind of like him with the wife I gave him...

3. Oh, Lestrade, definitely.

4. Um. I’m not sure what that is?? Someone they would never, ever be with? Anthea, oddly enough. I think they would both be horrified at the idea.

5. That Mycroft loves to cook. Even though he has to be very, very careful about what he eats.

6. “She looks very...functional” in reference to Rosie’s picture.

7. Um. Well. I DO sometimes get exasperated by people who make no effort to understand things.

8. When Sherlock twisted his arm and shoved him up against the wall. I mean, yeah, he was being a dick--but I always believed he was doing so because he was absolutely terrified of Sherlock really becoming the focus of Magnusson’s attention. And let’s face it--he was absolutely right.

9. Oh, cinnamon roll, for me, anyway. I think Mycroft has demonstrated his marshmallow center several times over, despite that prissy exterior.

It seems like for some of your anons that Michael cant interact with anyone without them thinking Michael will hook up with them. Michael/Kyle were not romantic at all. Its like no one heard of platonic relationships. Or think bisexuals will hook up with anyone. Which is biphobic.

Yeah I think there’s a huge difference between

1) having beloved characters and shipping that person with everyone because you think there is chemistry or it would be hot (for example Captain Daddy immediately became a thing after Alex and Ramos interacted, for example and I totally get why).

Versus

2) genuinely thinking there is something there or something deliberately being written into the show when it makes literally no sense. Rnm is not subtle about their romances. And as much as people may love the chemistry, the show isn’t writing romantic/sexual guerenti, kylex, maribel, valevans, etc, even though tons of people love those ship dynamics, and for good reason. That’s a fandom thing- which is great! Like it’s literally such a big historic part of fandom. But more often than not the past several years every time someone ships something they think it’s either going to be canon or should be when some things are just meant to be good old-fashioned fanon.

I wouldn’t call it biphobic at all 😂 sometimes people just think ships are hot. And it’s not like Michael is the only fandom bicycle.

My Favorite Fics of 2021

Wow, it seems so much longer than a year ago that I read some of these fics! 2021 was like a time warp. I have a bunch more saved that I still want to read, but things being the way they are, I thought it better to go ahead a post my favorites from the ones I finished while it’s still January.

In descending order of length, my 30 favorite fics that were completed in 2021:

Love Me, Love Me Knot (English Version) by kirin_calls, XBelladonnaX (213K, E, Johnlock, John/OC) In an alternate universe, the Omega Sherlock and the Alpha John meet by chance and enter into a pact which leads to far-reaching consequences. What is meant to be a simple solution to their problems turns out to be a challenge that pushes both men to their limits.

To Stand Before the Storm by ArwaMachine (132K, E, Johnlock) Somebody has been killing sheep on an uninhabited island just off the western coast of Ireland, and Sherlock—of course—can’t resist the call to investigate. As a soon-to-be-divorced John and a recently-not-dead Sherlock unravel the mystery of the murdered sheep, they find that they may be forced to confront unspoken sentiments that have lingered between the two them for some time—that is, if they don’t fall victim to the dangers of the island first.

The Ancillus's Tale by Chryse (128K, E, Johnlock) Once Sherlock’s body had been his alone. He was free to treat it with great care or none at all; to live on cigarettes and coffee and cocaine and then sleep it all off for days on end. He was free to stay in and sleep alone or to go to clubs and choose someone to touch him, mark him with nails and teeth or to kiss him with sweetness and care, according to his whim. Every part of it had been his decision. No more. Now he was property of the Crown, tagged and marked like one of the King’s deer, to be bred like one of his horses.

First, Do No Harm by J_Baillier (114K, M, Johnlock) When Sherlock's career and sanity are compromised by a case that ends up on the nation's front pages, he and John struggle to find a way forward. How can a surgeon reconcile being protected for a mistake they made but put on trial for one they didn't?

No Clean Slate by BeautifulFiction (112K, E, Johnlock) Not even Mary's death is enough to wipe her slate clean. Especially when she never died at all. John Watson must face up to his wife's past and keep his daughter safe. He doesn't ask for help, not from anyone. Except Sherlock Holmes.

From a Drop of Water by victorianpining (95K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is certain that James Moriarty is dead and he already has a theory for the person behind his apparent return. Considering Sherlock was overdosing at the time, it's only to be expected that he overlooked a few details in coming to his conclusions. John meanwhile has moved back in with Mary after reconciling with her at Christmas, but finds himself agonising over why Sherlock would have thrown away everything he cares about to keep her safe. Could Sherlock be in love?

Swallow the Night by ArwaMachine (87K, E, Johnlock) John’s stag-do doesn’t go as planned. Or--depending on how you look at it--it went exactly as planned. Life goes on, of course, but can it?

Bakers with Benefits by Raina_at (83K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes has a successful YouTube baking channel, but what he really wants is his own bakery. When an old friend sends him a call for the very first Great British Bake Off, he seizes the opportunity to finally win a sponsor for his bakery. Here's the plan: Win Bake Off, get the bakery, don't fall in love with the handsome Army doctor at the neighbouring station. Easy.

So Grant Us All a Change of Heart by ArwaMachine (83K, E, Johnlock, Mystrade) It’s Christmastime at Baker Street, but things are far from festive. Mary is dead, John and Sherlock’s friendship is all but ruined, and Sherlock has become a right dick about everything. More convinced than ever that sentiment is objectively useless, Sherlock needs a little paranormal intervention to see the error of his ways or else run the risk of losing all that is important to him.

In Sickness And In Health by J_Baillier (75K, E, Johnlock) When John gets a long overdue tonsillectomy, Sherlock is robbed of a chance to meet lots of handsome officers in uniform.

Messages From Deep Waters by J_Baillier (56K, E, Johnlock, Viclock, Warstan) They say that people who settle in such isolated, wild places cradled and battered by the sea are exceptionally at peace with themselves or running away from something. Sherlock certainly knows which one applies to him, but what about his reclusive neighbour John Watson?

Together We Fell by Enterthetadpole, WritingOutLoud (55K, E, Johnlock, Mollstrade) Fuelled with post-case adrenaline, Sherlock takes a risk and shows John Watson what he really wants. The pair fall into a whirlwind romance, filled with laughter, cases and lovemaking, but without a solid foundation to build on. Six months later, John is left in the ruins, wondering where everything went wrong.

The Short Tragic Death of John Watson by Calais_Reno (49K, M, Johnlock) Thirteen years ago, Sherlock starred in a television series about an alien boy stranded on Earth. Now Molly has written a reunion episode and he's expected to join his old costars and recreate the role of Alex Tribble, now an adult returning to rescue his old friends from an alien threat. Having had some success since playing a teenage alien, Sherlock is reluctant to reprise the role. And there's another problem no one wants to discuss: John Watson, who played his best friend, is dead.

Rewind by khorazir (47K, M, Johnlock) An accidental touch sends Sherlock back to Barts morgue on 29th January 2010, thus undoing eight years of acquaintance with John Watson. Is this a most unfortunate incident, a curse, even? Or is it indeed a second chance to finally shape his relationship with John the way it should have been from the beginning?

Here We Go Again by disfictional (46K, E, Johnlock) Ransacking some old trunks, Rosie Watson finds her father's old journal filled with remnants of a blog he used to keep about his association with Sherlock Holmes. In an attempt to meet the man who had a profound impact on her early years, Rosie invites the long-estranged detective to her wedding under false pretenses. It's a Mamma Mia Fusion!

Ride On by Silvergirl (34K, E, Johnlock) After the disastrous reveal at the Landmark, John tells Sherlock there can be no excuse for what he’s done, and no forgiveness. Sherlock leaves London and starts a new life, and not even the British Government knows where. It’s up to John to track him down and make things right, with a trip around the world and a clue only John would recognize.

If There Were Any Time for a Miracle by Berty (31K, E, Johnlock) John and Sherlock are spending Christmas at the Holmes' family home. Sherlock has a plan that John doesn't know about. John has a wish that Sherlock doesn't know about. If there were any time for a miracle, this would be it.

Sleepwalkers by ArwaMachine (27K, E, Johnlock) Five times Sherlock and John share a bed after a near-death experience, and one time they share a bed for…other reasons.

What Makes Us Real by lurikko/toyhto (26K, E, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) Sherlock is a sex robot who doesn’t like sex. John’s job is to find out why.

Human Behaviour by lurikko/toyhto (21K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock wakes up after a nap and finds out that sixty-five years have passed. Also, there's a human living in his apartment.

Treading Water by DiscordantWords (21K, T, Johnlock) As their personal and professional relationship slowly unravels under an intangible strain, a case forces Sherlock and John to spend the night inside the London Aquarium.

Fading Stars and Black Holes by lurikko/toyhto (19K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes, known from movies A Scandal in Belgravia and Don’t Make Me Choose, comes back to acting after two years. He’s starring in a romantic comedy about two men who move in together for practical reasons and stumble into a surprising friendship. The only problem is that his co-star is John Watson, a man whom he hasn’t seen since he left their shared flat two years ago, leaving John only a note. During the time they have been apart, John Watson has gotten to himself a wife, a child, and a divorce.

Hot Water Bottle by khorazir (18K, T, Johnlock) A case in one of the remotest corners of the Lake District, a storm, an inn, a broken boiler, a room with two beds but only one hot water bottle, and two men who have a lot to sort out between them – all of this makes for a night to remember.

House of Light by AlgySwinburne (17K, E, Johnlock) “For god’s sake,” Sherlock blusters, “John and I are--” “Happy. So very happy,” John cuts in loudly. He gives Sherlock a resounding slap on the back, jerking Sherlock forward. “In fact, we couldn’t be happier, did I already say that? The two of us. Sherlock and I, that is. Because we’re together--in a relationship--as you so astutely noticed before we could break the news. So. Yes. Thank you, Mrs Holmes.”

I Can Carry You by lurikko/toyhto (17K, E, Johnlock) There's a new virus. Sherlock catches it.

Winning the Goat by ArwaMachine (17K, E, Johnlock) The life that Sherlock and John have together is rather unusual. Sometimes they lounge about the flat with their daughter. Sometimes they flee for their lives from a band of organ-harvesting criminals. Sometimes they shag. Sometimes Sherlock insists upon arguing with John about the Monty Hall problem for weeks on end. Somehow, they love each other. Somehow, it all works.

Another Party on Christmas Eve by PoppyAlexander (14K, M, Johnlock) A year after their first meeting during the festive season, Sherlock and John plan for another of Sherlock's holiday drinks things.

For Love by lurikko/toyhto (13K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock asks John to marry him. It's for a case. Probably.

The Zebra Sheets by agirlsname (13K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is back from the dead and he's exhausted. So is John. They go on a holiday to a faraway cottage and unexpected truths are revealed.

holding steady by darcylindbergh (12K, E, Johnlock) Sitting on a thick wool blanket at the end of a rickety dock side-by-side, legs dangling over the edge, a styrofoam container of wet, dark dirt between them, they��re fishing. * John knows what this is about. This is about finally figuring it out.

Hi there. As tumblrs resident Mystrade fic reccer.. can I ask, do you read Mycroft ×Reader fics? Should I give them a try? Any recommendations?

Sorry, I do not read those.

With my sociology hat on, I’m interested in the idea of the genre, as a more grown-up version of those “get a storybook for your kid with their name in” products. It’s a neat idea, to more directly address the desire to interact more intimately with your favorite characters.

But as a reader... my headcanon for Mycroft is that very few people interest him enough for him to interact with them on a personal level. Actually, two. Sherlock and Lestrade. So a story where Mycroft gets involved with someone he doesn’t have a long history with, that doesn’t work for me, regardless whether it’s supposed to be me or not.

I welcome hearing more about them -- anyone read and like them? What appeals to you? What do you recommend?

(By the way, I have spent the morning doing a Les Nessman “oooOOOOOOh” of pleasure at being called the Mystrade fic reccer. And I know most of you do not know what the heck I’m talking about, given that it’s a reference to a 40-year-old sitcom. (I tried to find a link but unsurprisingly, gifs of that show are thin on the ground.) But thank you very much, anon person. And questions are always welcome.)

What would you recommend for someone who just started on the Sherlock fandom? (Exclusively interested in Johnlock)

Please do keep in mind that I do not like one shots and am very interested in teen-lock!

I seriously love introducing new people to the fandom (one of the reasons I started the blog in the first place)!

I will tell you that teen!lock is something very hard to recommend when the person is not into one-shots. Although, I can’t blame you... if something is good, might as well be big, too.

My Notes: This is probably one of the most famous fanfictions in the Sherlock fandom. Earlgrey68 is brilliant and so is their writing. Basically, this is in an alternate universe where they meet as teenagers and (spoiler alert) fall in love as they get themselves involved in adventures and case solving. There’s a very cute plot of Mystrade (if you’re new, you probably should know that Mycroft and Lestrade are perfect for each other). There is a lot of smut, which is also beautifully written and is not too early on, but it’s not a super slow-burn. It’s just perfect, I’d say. They also get a dog at a certain point and I am all in for it.

If you don’t like angst or fics where they argue, then this is not for you, because it is quite long (average of 3.244 words per chapter) if you’re not used to it.

My Notes: So, if you read or watched the book/movie Love, Simon, you will love this. If you didn’t, you will love it anyway. i actually read the book BECAUSE of this fanfiction. It is slow-burn only because (spoiler alert) they only get together like on the last three chapters. It is a very recent fic, so the author replies to the comments without delay and accepts criticism.

It is not very long, but it’s not very short either, so it’s the perfect length for a “light reading” session.

Smut only happens on the last chapter of all, although there are mentions of it throughout, and if you want to skip it you lose nothing important to the plot and if you want to read it separately you don’t need to read the other 14 chapters before.

My Notes: This is a long fic. It is full of emotions, it will leave you perfectly satisfied, yet wanting more. It was pure parent!lock perfection. I’ve read it again and again and still am not tired in the slightest. How could I be?

(spoiler alert) Basically, the government clone Sherlock by accident, he wants to keep the baby, John helps and realizes that they are basically an old married couple, anyway. The kid id the cutest thing ever and you’ll melt when he says his first word!

It is entirely in character and has a sweet sprinkle of Mystrade to make it all better.

The smut is still spotless and, let’s be honest, it is onw of the reasons why it’s so good.

Thank you for the tag @simplyclockwork! I also saw @silentauroriamthereal‘s last night and meant to go off of that, so thank you to you both. (:

Name: AnneCumberbatch (just call me Anne! She/Her)

Fandoms: BBC Sherlock. I enjoy a smattering of content for other fandoms, but my blog and my writing focuses on Sherlock, specifically johnlock and mystrade.

Where do you post: Ao3, sometimes ficlets on Tumblr and now, apparently, little thread ficlets on Twitter (I newly joined as @theogannecbatch and it’s quite the adventure.)

Most popular multi-chapter fic: For John With Love is my most popular multi-chapter fic. It took me four years to complete and is most representative of my style, perhaps? I personally enjoy seeing myself transition into a more expressive writer throughout the story. It’s a dark johnlock with serial killer Sherlock and johnstrade.

Favorite story you’ve written so far: Hm.. I love my shorter little abstracted angst pieces. So, in my top faves are Pulse, a depressed!Sherlock feat. estranged John and caring Mycroft, Promise, a late night chat turned morning love confession post S4, and To Sleep, Perchance to Dream, a little Sherlock angst bomb. I think those, particularly Pulse, are the ones I think about the most.

Fic you were nervous to post: I think a fic I was nervous about posting... was probably both All we do is hide away back in January and A Sherlock-Shaped Hole this September. All we do was nerve-wracking because it’s a diary POV fic and I’d never done anything like that and I was posting a chapter a day for 38 days. It was quite the journey, but it turned out well, I think. SSH made me nervous because it had been a while since I’d posted a fic of substance. “substance”. So, that made me nervous, to “put to the test” if I was still decent at writing fics. But that also turned out alright, so, that was nice.

How you choose your titles: My titles are either songs that the fic was based on or a reflection of the story. So, my fluff series it’s pretty much based on a phrase or feeling uttered in the series, otherwise it’s just... whatever I think it should be called. Do I regret some of my titles? Yes. Do I regret naming For John, with love that? Hecking yes. But, it is what it is and now I try to name more wisely. Do I also regret A Sherlock-Shaped Hole? Yes. Is it an accurate title? Also yes. So, it’s tricky. - I also love titles. I love having a title for a piece. It feels grounding and reminds me of the focus of the piece. Sometimes, I have to think really hard about it, but other times, they just come to me.

Do you outline: Yes and no. The only pieces I posted that I actually outlined were Bee Socks, For John with love, and A Sherlock-Shaped Hole. Everything else I spit out pretty much as it is. I am a large fan of outlining though. I have pages and pages of WIPs that are outlined, just percolating and waiting for the right moment to emerge as a fic in my brain.

Complete: I’m not sure what this means, but I have around 35 completed fics on A03. Two WIPs posted on there and a cover art. I’m pleased with that so far. Not putting any pressure on myself.

In Progress: I have a hell of a lot of WIPs. I’m currently working on.... my first Mystrade fic that’s very WIP that I’m calling Gorgeous, Beautiful, a little ficlet for a headcanon for another writer who allowed me to write it (untitled), the sequel to All we do is hide away (An End to the Bitter Frosts), a Halloween spooky fic for next year, This Much I Know, and a royal/fantasy?/dark fic called The Son of the King. But honestly, there are probably around 30 WIP projects that I bounce back and forth on. I’m not a steady writer. The one that probably haunts me the most is Bee Socks, but it just spiraled into too big a project (i.e. the pandemic) and so I had to drop it temporarily for mental health reasons. I may pick it back up, or I may just write a chapter summarising what my plans had been. We’ll see.

Coming Soon: Hopefully, Gorgeous, Beautiful will work itself out. And then the headcanon ficlet, of course. Other then that, I have no idea.

Do you accept prompts: I’ve never gotten any prompts, really. I’m not sure. It would have to be within the areas I write in: realism, dark/fluff, no smut, etc. I love writing angst, so if you have a prompt, hit me up and we can chat about it!

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: I’m really excited to write the spooky fic, This Much I Know. I tried to write it in time for Halloween this year but it got away from me and really blossomed into something else. So I’m excited to see what will happen there.

Upcoming story you are most excited about: Story that I’m writing or story that someone else is writing? There are so many wonderful stories coming out every day by fantastic writers in this fandom that I couldn’t possibly name one. I feel blessed to have such a wonderful hobby shared and enjoyed by so many.

My Five Faves of my work...

Starting with the fic that was first posted to AO3!

My Craquelure series starts with To Capture Light.

The watercolor painting on his studio table mimics the sunset: stains of color running into one another, edges blurring and lines saturating around coin-sized pools of wet pigment. He watches as the gleam of color dulls into a dry matte, and he thinks of how his own life is doing the same. A drying out of the steadfast and glorious career of Mycroft Holmes, his covert accomplishments disintegrating into the bones of an archaeological dig that no one will ever even think to fund.

Mycroft Holmes has sequestered himself in a desolate part of the world as he struggles with the consequences of the events at Sherrinford. He is confronted with the unexpected when a visitor appears on his doorstep.

The Tenth Muse

Mycroft sees things other people can’t. Lights, spectres, shades, demons, phantasms, and creatures that no one else can see. Voices no one else can hear. Colours eddying around people’s bodies, visible only to his eyes.

It isn't deduction for Mycroft; it's a living nightmare that leads to self-imposed isolation. When Sherlock "dies," Mycroft finds himself reaching out for a golden slice of happiness, just one person to call his own in a landscape of horrors.

Summary

Mycroft is in the middle of a long day's work. And although he has asked not to be disturbed under any circumstances, Anthea ventures to knock on his office door to give him a call from Greg.

"Boss."

Mycroft looked up to see Anthea poking her head through the half-open door and sighed, "Anthea, I said I was not to be disturbed today, for anything..."

Anthea didn't let herself be rattled and replied firmly, "I know, but you have a call on line 1, it's Detective Lestrade."

Mycroft frowned, it had been a long time since Greg had called him on his work number.

He asked, "Work related or personal?"

Anthea shook her head, "I couldn't say."

Mycroft sighed, "Put the call through here."

"All right."

She gently closed the door behind her and a few seconds later, Mycroft saw the phone on his desk flashing and grabbed the receiver, bringing it to his ear.

"Mycroft speaking."

"Hello Mycroft," Greg's cheerful voice replied.

He sighed, "Greg, you know I have a lot of work to do today and I said I wouldn't..."

Greg gently cut him off, "I know that, love. So let me do the talking and I promise it'll only take a few seconds."

Mycroft relented, "I'm listening."

Greg continued in his always gentle voice, "It's 2 p.m. and I know you haven't had anything but coffee since breakfast this morning. So if you ask Anthea, she'll bring you something I left for you. Well, that's all. Bon appétit, work hard but don't overexert yourself, and I'll see you tonight. Love you."

Mycroft didn't have time to react as only the tone of the phone answered, Greg having hung up immediately.

Mycroft put the phone back down and called, "Anthea!"

The young woman immediately opened the door to his office.

Mycroft asked, "I was told you had something for me."

Anthea nodded with a smile and disappeared for a few seconds before reappearing with a small bag in her hands, which she placed on Mycroft desk. She returned to the door just as quickly and said simply, before leaving Mycroft's office, "It's good not to be the only one looking after your welfare. Detective Lestrade is a good man."

Mycroft nodded, "I know."

Then he opened the small bag containing a small thermos bottle, a bottle of water and some small sandwiches.

Mycroft's neglected stomach chose this moment to gurgle, so he couldn't resist biting into one of the small sandwiches. As he chewed with relish, he opened the thermos, and just as he thought it was coffee, he inhaled the scent and realized it was his favorite tea.

He took another bite of the sandwich he had started to eat and his eyes fell on a small piece of paper at the bottom of the bag.

He picked it up, unfolded it, and immediately recognized his lover's handwriting.

You've had too much coffee already.

Everything better be empty tonight.

Anthea will give me a report so I know if you're lying.

Take care of yourself, my love.

See you tonight.

Yours.

Greg.

Mycroft chuckled slightly, then smiled fondly, touched by so much care. He reread the note before carefully placing it in his locked desk drawer.

He took a sip of tea, made all the more delicious by the fact that Greg had prepared it especially for him. He made sure to eat it all and showed it to Anthea when he'd finished. She just nodded, but Mycroft noticed that she grabbed her phone as she left his office.

He then grabbed his and wrote a message.

I don't know what else to say but thank you.

And that I can't wait until tonight to show you how grateful I am.

Love.

Sent 2:30 pm

The answer came almost immediately.

You'll never have to thank me for taking care of you.

I am, however, looking forward to tonight.

Mycroft chuckled slightly and his phone vibrated again.

This time it was not a light chuckle, but an uninhibited laugh that echoed through Mycroft's office. He was still smiling as he resumed his work.

From that moment on, his working day was much more pleasant. Every time he poured himself a cup of tea or his eyes fell on the thermos bottle, he thought of Greg again. Of the way he looked after Mycroft.

And he felt cherished. Loved.

Evening couldn't come soon enough.

Fave color: I’m going to use this as a shameless excuse to post a gratuitous picture of my dog that I took today. My favorite color is the golden tan of Bella!

Currently reading: Sort of nothing? Work and parenting have been a lot lately and I’m writing (see below), which hasn’t left much (any) time to read for fun. But my next reading endeavor is going to be my own work: I owe my FTH bidder an Emotional Support Raven story and I’m sorely lacking inspiration. So I’m planning to reread the series from the beginning. Will probably reblog stories as I read them.

Last song: Sweeping the Ashes by Serena Ryder. Highly recommend.

Last series: Surfski and I always have several things we’re watching at the same time. We’re currently caught up on Strange New Worlds, and we just started Jury Duty. Also watching the Great Pottery Throwdown, Pose season 3, Person of Interest season 4 (still), and the Amazing Race is our exercise show.

Last movie: We went to see the Barbie Movie last weekend! I really enjoyed it!

Currently working on: I am completely obsessed with the story I’m posting on my Other Account. It’s a Mystrade AU and getting back to the pairing that started me in fan fiction has been such a joy plus the AU has been so much fun. And because I don’t have relationships with people on that account like I do on this one, I’ve felt pretty free to let my id run wild and post stuff that isn’t perfectly refined. That’s all added up to this being the longest thing I’ve ever posted: 23,500 words and counting (I know that’s short for a lot of people, but mind blowingly long for me). Anyway, if I’ve piqued anyone’s interest with this and you want to follow me to a trope that’s a squick for some people, hit me up in DMs…. or just browse recent Mystrade multi-chapter fics for that word count. 😉 I would love more people to talk to me about this AU.

Thanks, secret person! ❤️ I aim to please. This is just a short selection from my bookmarks. Everyone likes their Mycroft a certain way, and I tend to enjoy reading him more uncertain or nervous rather than flat-out shy, but I hope you enjoy these all the same.

The Order of Time by randomscientist is a very pleasing 5555 words, and a very enjoyable fic. I wouldn’t call randomscientist’s Mycroft shy but he has a beautiful fragile streak which makes my heart flutter like mad. (Mycroft didn’t know how to be someone’s friend. But for Greg.. For Greg, he found himself ready to try.)

Pillow Talk by Sirius Blue (880 words) is a short and lovely story with Mycroft a little nervous about his age. His adoring husband makes it all better. (“It’s nothing. It’s just… oh, I’m being ridiculous.”)

Taking Care by Mice is 1500 words of gorgeous post-TFP hurt/comfort and it’s just lovely. This Mycroft needs to be treasured forever. (“I’m here, Mycroft. Let me be here for you. Let me help you. You need someone; you need a friend." "I’ve never had a friend,” Mycroft whispered.)

Just a Cuppa by Green Violin Bow is a great 3800-word introduction to all her amazing stories. Her Mycrofts are always very human and deep with a beautiful vulnerability. (“It was…difficult. I thought perhaps.” He stops, and his fingers knot together over his chest. “A missed opportunity.”)

The Hand of Friendship by Topicabo is a super enjoyable 4000-word read with a beautifully written uncertain Mycroft… plus snowed in trope! (”You have to understand, it’s been a very long time since I’ve had anything close to a friendship. A real one, I mean. So I’m rather protective of ours.”)

A Life Well-Lived by Kate_Lear (20K, E, Johnlock) ‘John got scared off men by an abusive past relationship. Sherlock has to try and woo him while not scaring him off with protective possessive rage.’

A Love with No Name by aceofhearts (49K, M, Johnlock, Warstan, Mary/Irene) In which Asexual!Sherlock and Straight!John are platonically in love life partners.

A Thorough Examination / In Depth by emungere (15K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock watched John's mouth as that smile slid away too quickly. There had been something there, something he'd not had time to analyze. He was left with the unsettling impression of having witnessed an expression that didn't belong on John Watson's face at all. In its wake it left the equally unsettling thought that perhaps he didn't know John as entirely as he thought he did.

Indecorous by Basingstoke (55K, E, Johnlockary but it’s a different Mary than in the show) In which John learns to balance a kinky girlfriend, an asexual boyfriend, a ten-inch cock, his sister, the neighbours, his friends, and his blog. Some are more balanced than others.

Lacuna by coloredink (15K, E, Johnlock) God, it must have been terrible, to think that he would never have this again.

Let's Make a Bed Out in the Rain by theimprobable1 (17K, M, Johnlock and Warstan) John is devastated after his long-term girlfriend leaves him. Sherlock helps him through it.

Level 65 Paladin Looking for Group by etothepii (10K, T, Gen) "I think I met someone," John says at his next therapist's appointment. "A friend." "Really?" Ella asks. She sounds pleased, and also surprised. "What's his name?" John nods. "Really. His name's Sherlock. He -- he plays the same game as me, the online one. We party together."

Major Pieces by Lindentreeisle (31K, T, Gen) Sherlock knew that he could thoroughly rely upon John Watson's moral sense. And that's why he knew that Lestrade was wrong, wrong, wrong.

My Phone’s on Vibrate For You by misslucyjane (21K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock texts John all the time. Today’s different.

Never-Ending Cycle (orphaned) (17K, T, Johnlock) Or, four times Sherlock Holmes attempted to propose to John Watson, and the Christmas Party at which he finally did. Sherlock thinks he's a miserable failure, John is confused, Mrs. Hudson and Lestrade provide some unsatisfactory advice, and Mummy is, as always, the solution. All in a lovely, fluffy holiday theme.

On The Ice by berlynnwohl (35K, E, Johnlock) "Sherlock, I once saw you taste a vacuum cleaner attachment that had been used as a murder weapon, so can we please not pretend that Dungeons and Dragons is too weird for you?"

Parallel by brbsoulnomming (77K, M, Johnlock) There's a case at a secondary school/University, some series of threats or string of bizarre murders that has the entire campus shaken. In the course of the investigation, Sherlock and John meet two students. And, because they both want to help with the investigation, they get to watch them become friends and fall a little in love. And that makes them feel things about themselves that they've been working very hard to not feel, thank you.

Secondary Exposure by thesardine (18K, T, Gen) After twenty years, the killer who abducted John as a child has resurfaced. Now John and Sherlock must track him down before he claims another victim, and at the same time navigate the shifting nature of their relationship.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc by etothepii (20K, M, Johnlock) "Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc. It's the family motto." "What does it mean?" "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us." (Addams Family crossover)

The Art Of Seduction by flawedamythyst (97K, E, Johnlock, Mystrade, Sheriarty, John/OMC, Sherlock/OMC) Sherlock ran a website called The Science Of Seduction, on which he gave advice on the best ways to get laid, wrote blog entries detailing the results of his various sexual 'experiments' and generally contributed to the stereotype of 'every gay man is a sex-mad playboy'. John avoided the thing like the plague. AU in which Sherlock treats sex like he does crime in canon.

The Baker Street Series by magicbunni (199K, T, Gen with background John/Sarah) Conspiracy and murder find Sherlock Holmes and John Watson surrounded by covert enemies in the heart of Scotland Yard. Together, they unearth clues that illuminate the scope, depth, and distorted psychology behind the crime. And, after a preemptive strike ordered by the mastermind they pursue, Holmes elects to continue the investigation under conditions that will force John Watson to fight for his friend's -- colleague's -- life.

The Penultimate Problem by Random_Nexus (18K, E, Johnlock) Angst, apocalypse-light, pseudo-hiatus, and other hijinx ensue.

The Love Song of Dr. John H. Watson by Kate_Lear (11K, E, Johnlock) John takes Sherlock out for the evening on Valentine's Day.

The Perfect Specimen by Cleo2010 (27K, E, Johnlock) After seeing John undressed for the first time and making certain observations, Sherlock quickly becomes obsessed with a certain body part belonging to his flatmate. This is the story of how that first sighting came to be and the following attempts to learn more. An unashamed masturbation-fest, first person and very detailed. It's rated explicit for a good reason!

The Poster Girl by stardust_made (67K, M, Gen) A seemingly straightforward case has Lestrade calling for Sherlock's help. Written from John's POV, this story takes place two months after the events in "The Great Game" and follows the investigation of the murder of Veronica Havisham: seventeen, popular—and murdered in Hainault Forrest on a Friday night in June.

The Progress of Sherlock Holmes by ivyblossom (62K, E, Johnlock, Warstan) “I had,” he said, “come to an entirely erroneous conclusion, my dear Watson, how dangerous it always is to reason from insufficient data.”

The Pull of One Magnet to Another by ellie_hell (46K, M, Johnlock) Mummy has arranged Mycroft’s marriage with an ex-army doctor. However, John meets Sherlock first, and sparks fly.

The Top-Secret Livejournal of Sherlock Holmes by malacophilous (23K, M, Johnlock, Sarah/John, Sherstrade) Sherlock has a Livejournal, which he updates constantly via his mobile phone and netbook. Everyone offline thinks that he's this stoic super-genius, when in reality he's a bonkers super-genius.

There's A First Time For Everything by Kate_Lear (21K, E, Johnlock) A series of 'firsts' in Sherlock's life.

Those Left Behind by nickelsandcoats (33K, E, Johnlock) After the events of The Great Game, Sherlock is on the hunt for revenge as John waits for Sherlock to join him. But deception abounds as both men struggle to come to terms with the paths their lives have taken.

What Makes Us Rich by flawedamythyst (31K, E, Johnlock) Agreeing on a compromise is one thing, living with it is quite another.

Fandoms: BBC Sherlock, ACD Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who, Good Omens, although I only write for the first (and mostly Mystrade).

Where you post: Here and AO3

Most popular multi-chapter fic: “Mycroft in Fashion” which I post to whenever a piece of clothing gives me thoughts about Mr. Holmes. I had no idea other people would enjoy that so much. (Three more chapters now in progress.)

Favourite story you’ve written so far: My personal favorite is probably “Greg Headroom”, just because the writing process went so smoothly and the ideas kept coming and I was happy I finished it as planned. I also have a fondness for the “Mystrade Cocktails” series, because I love the concept of the two just sitting and drinking together and slowly opening up.

Fic you were nervous to post: The two I did for the Mystrade Is Magic month. Mainly because of the types of transformations. “Through the Looking Glass, And What Greg Found There” turned Mycroft into a kid, temporarily, and I wanted to be clear that there was no romance during that time. “The Curse” turned Mycroft into a woman, and I was very happy to get some good advice on the topic of pronouns and the like. I didn’t want to upset anyone over the perception and the trans aspects.

How you choose your titles: Poorly, mostly. They’re either straightforward or allusions to quotes or songs. Titles are hard. (Although I find summaries pretty easy.)

Do you outline: Ha! No. If I did, I wouldn’t have so much WIP. For longer stories, I do series, with complete stories as segments, instead of chapters, so if I’m not able to get back to it, it’s still satisfying to read.

Complete: 28.

In progress: 8, that have parts posted (that’s 22%). I have learned better and now write shorter and more finished. But I just can’t resist getting the feedback. I need the love!

Coming soon/not yet started: At least one Christmas fic for the 12 Days of Mystrade calendar (plug!). I have a couple other playful ideas I’d like to get out there, but I really want to finish up a few things first.

Do you accept prompts: Yes. I love guidance and working something out based on a given structure. I know a number of creative people love their freedom, but I don’t mind a bit of structure or rules or guidelines as inspiration.

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: Either the one where Mycroft Discovers Maurice (the movie) or my first stab at a 5+1, about the times they got naked around each other. (I’m a fandom baby, so all these formats everyone else is tired of are still new to me.)

Upcoming story you are most excited about: I am not clear on why this question would be different from the one above?
