pcos awareness month?

since september is a pcos awareness month, i feel like writing my experiences round it from the start, i don't know exactly where this is going but we'll just go with the flow.

so i first got my period when i was 9 (i know, it's SUPER early). at first we thought it was like an infection, UTI or as known as 'kencing kotor' because we did checked it with a doctor and at the same time i was having that lol. but my mom also wasn't really sure if i really got my period, and ofc me being clueless than ever, just thought it was nothing and maybe just a false alarm. but then it turns out it was a REAL period moment lol, we were just confused.

started having my boobs and shit grow at 10, to the point where most of my friends are still flat as shit but i'm having like two gigantic mountains on my body, which are hurting my back and making my back hunching most of the time, since i was pretty embarrassed most of the part. i remember being laughed at for having boobs lmao. anyways it first came when i was 9, then it just somehow, never came again?

until i was 11 or 12 (can't really remember), but i finally had my period again. it wasn't as often as everyone else, but i had some, every month, then maybe every 2-3 months, but it is still coming. i thought maybe my body was still trying to regulate my hormones and shit because living in a girls school for five years, most of my friends have already known their cycle, when they start, when they end, how long do they bleed, but i just, don't know.

it was pretty confusing as a 13 year old trying to figure out what the hell i'm going to do with my life and at the same time why my body just doesn't work the same way as everybody else's. all in all, i just kept quiet and just followed with the flow. if the period is coming then it is, if it doesn't, well then it is that too lol. also i started noticing my face kept having these acnes and shit very often, i thought maybe it was just my hormones fucking up my body, but at the same time i was thinking was it my lifestyle? am i stressed at school? did i ate the wrong stuff? do i have a sensitive-acne prone skin? did i use the wrong skincare? or do i need more skincare? but i just pushed that aside and pretty much ignored it since girlie is just trying to survive over here yall in this mf school.

although most of the time i ignored it because maybe it was all related to i-was-stressed-and-tired-in-school reason, but somehow i always wondered why do i keep having acnes almost most of the time on my face (it's not many, or severe, but it's just most of the time THERE or they're just alternating their shifts and places lol), and why do i know almost nothing about my body. i mean physically yes, but inside? not really. i was most of the time tired, have trouble in sleeping either too much or too little, acnes on my face AND all over my back, i have all these body hairs that kept growing to the point it looks like men's, sometimes having asthma attacks or just short breaths, and all other shit.

2018, during raya, i was 15, i was bleeding like HELLA A LOT OF BLOOD. like i think every 30 mins i was changing those night pads and i kept bleeding and ruining my clothes everywhere for two freaking months. i lost so much blood that my aunt decided to bought me some haemoglobin pills because i looked like a vampire (finally a cullen i guess). when i was 16 and 17, i think i only bled twice or thrice, a year.

throughout the age of 13-16, most of the time when i was at home is just the time for my mom to bring me to all clinics available around kl, to check why i was not having my period. most of the doctors said that maybe i was not eating well (since im a picky eater), i was okay but maybe i was stressed and other stuff which somehow doesn't make sense to apply in my condition. like i KNOW something is wrong with my body, but all these doctors kept giving me diagnosis that just doesn't fit me. we spent a lot of money too. 16, and i still haven't got my period for like 9 months? my aunt suggested this one clinic specialised in OBGYN. went there with my mom, met dr andi.

she asked about my period cycle and all the other stuff, did an ultrasound and here it is. finally. a diagnosis that make sense. i was diagnosed with PCOS. was clueless about what it was, read some stuff on the internet, read about the symptoms and voila. finally all those acnes, asthma, tiredness and other shit i was going through were explained. finally, i felt relieved, to know what was going on with me. but the suffering didn't really end there, the challenge is basically me dealing with the symptoms.

the thing is, i can't really cure it. there's only a few options, but only to treat the symptoms. for instance, the symptoms are weight gain, so i need to eat healthier and exercise bla bla bla bla. i need to lose weight, i need to control my sugar intake more since i have higher chances to get diabetes and all the other shitty diseases, and bla bla bla. it's just hard basically. you did not want to read me writing a longer post ranting about this shit lmao. but yeah it is a never ending struggle, and the options i have are exercise and eat healthier OR birth control pills, to induce my period. yikes. but still, i can't consume my birth control pills daily, i can only consume it for every time i want to induce my period only which is two weeks before the date i want it to happen. it just, sucks.

now, since i pretty much stayed at home and doesn't really walk as much as i did when i was in school, ofc i gained weight, from 48 to the last time i checked which was last year? lol i was 53, and i am pretty much sure that i am gaining a lot more since then. i used to not really care about what i ate, or how much i ate. most of my friends even knew me for having saka since i ate A LOT when my favourite food at the dm were served. 3 full plates of nasi are almost nothing to me. but now it's different, i ate something and i gain a shit ton of more weight. maybe i was not gaining weight during my high school phase due to the fact that i walked (which is somehow exercising) a lot per day? but anyways that was wayyyyyyy back then.

the most shitty thing is the fact that almost all the food that i can't eat, are the only food that i eat. like i have to avoid gluten, watch my sugar and salt intake, i can't eat fast food and a whole shit list of basically food that i can't consume. weh, kalau aku ikut betul betul list tu, memang confirm tinggal tulang je weh aku.

anyways this is basically a sum up of what i felt like over the years lol.

OK anon im so sorry this is so long and so convuluted I actually got so carried away jdbKJBGKSDBGH. i'm not even sure i properly answered your question i just got overwhelmed with Love for my same-sex schooling DHGKJSDFBHG anyway, if there's anything more you want to know lmk and I will try to be concise next time 💀

Essentially, my own experience at a single-sex secondary school was fantastic—however, I know my experience isn’t universal, especially since my school was a little bit different to most, I think.

That being said, I still think that sending your daughters to female-only secondary schools is something every parent should strive to do if they can. No other learning environment will ever be as good for girls as a same-sex school.

In terms of school staff, mine was about 95% female, and 5% male. The few male teachers we had were genuinely competent men and decent teachers, they were also watched like hawks. Our principal was female, all leadership positions in the school (such as House Leaders, Year Level Co-Ordinators, Department Heads, even the chaplain) were held by women. Our school psychologists, our nurses, our library technicians, our café ladies, our career advisors, our tutors—all were women. Our school houses (think like Harry Potter houses) were named after important women in our country’s history.

I went to a co-ed primary school. And whilst at twelve you might not have the words to describe it, graduating from a co-ed space, into an all-female space is really a giant weight off of your shoulders. You don’t realise how suffocating co-education is until you’re no longer having to bear it. It feels so much more natural, so much more free! You are welcomed as you are. You can be loud and unashamed of it. We joked frequently with each other and our teachers, laughed loudly and cared not whether our laughs were ‘ugly’. I found that teachers were far more supportive than they were in my co-ed school. For example, in a co-ed school I had been told frequently to ‘pipe down’ or to ‘reel it in’ from teachers, and more vexingly to ‘shut up’ from boys due to my boisterous personality. In high school? My teachers encouraged me to audition for the play because I had ‘great projection’. In every school programme (more on those later) that I was involved in, I was the one asked to give speeches about them at assembly. I was asked to be the lead of our house chants during our sports festivals. I was asked to join the debate team because of my passionate nature, which in primary school, had me known as ‘difficult’.

Likewise, I had a friend who was by nature quiet, and loved to draw. In primary school she’d doodled on the back of a work booklet, and when her teacher returned it, she’d taken off two points and had written a comment saying something about teachers in high school not accepting work that was drawn on.

Do you know what happened when she got to high school? Our English teacher had seen the eye she’d drawn on the back of our Romeo and Juliet test and had written, ‘beautiful!’ above it. The next test, she drew a two-headed cat with witches’ hats on both heads (I remember the left head was called Turpentine and the right head was called Esmeralda). Our teacher wrote, ‘wonderful!’ above it, with a smiley face.

The next day she got an email from our art teacher that had a PDF flyer of information on both in-school and local art competitions.

Anyway, she had questions and that teacher answered every single one of them. She also personally helped her select the works she wanted to submit. She ended up having two pieces shown in the school gallery, along forty pieces made by other girls. About five years later for our final year, on that art teacher’s recommendation (and tutelage!) she took all of the visual art subjects on offer. When she graduated, her final piece was shown at a public exhibition in our state’s capital city, that honoured the best pieces done by select graduating students in the state.

So yeah. Our teachers were pretty amazing. Of course, there was the odd teacher or two you would butt heads with but that’s just a universal school experience. Our humanities classes, like history, for example, often had a unit that would focus on the female experience of a certain time period. For example, when learning about WW2, we did projects on female resistance fighters et cetera.

We had health classes that were actually focused on female health. We learnt about female anatomy (even the clitoris! Though we were all about thirteen/fourteen at this time so we found it incredibly awkward to talk about), as well as symptoms of PCOS during our menstrual unit. We learnt about contraceptive methods and devices (however, as a Catholic school they did have to tell us that whilst these methods are available, the church-sanctioned method is of course, abstinence).

Whilst the majority of the girls shaved their legs and wore makeup, as someone who did neither of those things I rarely felt judgement about it (albeit, I think there was a little for my lack of makeup, but this only lasted the first two years). A good portion of our staff also did not wear makeup, I don’t recall this ever being commented on. And, by the time we’d reached about our third year, a good portion of my year level and the ones above did not wear makeup on a daily basis. Leg hair was not looked down upon by any of us I don’t think by this year either. In fact, if you were particularly hairy often your hairless friends asked to rub your legs!

We were never short of female role-models, our staff made sure of that. We had multiple days per year when guest speakers would come and talk to us, mostly these were women who were experts in their fields—whether that be neuroscience or computer science, linguistics and literature or mathematics, politics, et cetera. The only times we really had male guest speakers was when police officers (one male one female) came to give us an assembly about sexual peer-pressure and laws around sharing nudes that was basically, “these are common (male) manipulation tactics used to pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do, don’t fall for them”.

We were encouraged to take STEM subjects, and those of us that had taken interest in computer programming were sent to coding programmes in the city during school hours! That’s how keen our teachers were to get more women into the field! This was the same with the girls interested in politics, who got to go to Model UN events, as well as mock parliaments in the country’s capitol.

We had a lot of programmes generally. A few overseas ones for girls who were in LOTE (languages other than English) classes. A few interstate ones, too. And of course, local programmes and excursions. Most of them (aside from the LOTE ones which focused on immersion) were volunteer programmes aimed at helping women and girls. The rest were about furthering our own skills or learning new ones. Majority of these were year-level based, but a few depended on the clubs/groups/classes you were in. For example, I was part of the Writer’s Club, and we took an excursion to the state Writer’s Festival and listened to female writers as well as feminist panels. We also had self-defence programmes every year.

In terms of peers I generally found everyone to be quite amiable by the time we’d reached our third/fourth year. There’s a common myth about all girls schools being filled with ‘catty’ girls who are constantly bitching about one another, but I really did not find that to ring true. There were a few fights and arguments in the earlier years, I was part of quite a lot lol but that’s honestly… just something that happens at school, at any school. Largely, we were good to each other. If someone was crying there was always someone who’d ask her what was wrong. If you missed the notes on the slide, there was always a girl willing to share her notes with you.

I think going to an all-girl’s school, and not having that much interaction with the opposite sex generally for that six-year period truly does something, I think, to your psyche. We are socialised to look down on our fellow woman, socialised to look down upon ourselves. But actually being constantly surrounded by women, and almost ONLY women, really helps to undo that. Even now I could not describe the fierce love I have for all those women and girls I came in contact with during my time there—even the ones I bickered with. Each and every single woman I met there enriched my life in some way or another. I think that is the effect of consistently spending time in any female-only space: developing a true appreciation for women. It is the only reasonable conclusion to come to.

I have been out of high school for two years, and in university for one. Among the many men I have met since, none of them have even been able to hold a candle to the any women and girls I know.

Anyway. TLDR: it slapped, send your daughters to same-sex schools!!

hello hello im gonna, like, rant for a while about periods and stuff? cause mine are superrrr irregular and im getting worried but my mom doesn't really care/know much abt the female anatomy so i have no way of finding out what's wrong 😭

so i usually get my period after every 2-4 months and i don't think that's normal?? i have no idea if it's because im stressed 24/7, drink too much water, got pregnant w out having sex, or have some sort of condition like pcos or something.

idk anymore and im really worried. i started my period 3 years ago and it still hasnt become regular ehcjejcjs. i also have majorrr health anxiety aaaaaa

my mom wont take me to the doctor or anything cause the last time i asked, she said 'as long as there's no chance of me being pregnant, it's fine.' i just... dont think she knows that there are other reasons for late periods than being pregnant.

and i dont want to ask again, either, cause 'girl problems' and periods are kind of a taboo topic in my household. (all the stuff ik abt my body is cause of the internet aha)

irregular periods are SCARY but you're definitely not alone—I've had these issues too. A lot of things can cause them, from something as simple as stress, to more complex health issues like thyroid or PCOS.

Honestly, your best bet is to go see a gynac and get a medical opinion. Bodies are complicated and this might snowball into something more serious, and you most definitely do not want that.

Explain to your mom why you think this might be an issue. Tell her that you're scared that something might seriously go wrong, and that what you're going through is most definitely NOT normal.

Also, take a couple of months to observe your body. Check what your flow is like when you do get your period, including what the blood is like in terms of colour and consistency (Black blood means that it's old, probably from the cycle before, red is safe normal, green/brown might indicate beginnings of an infection)

Also, make sure to keep track of your symptoms—both during and before you get your period. See if you get any of those symptoms around your dates, even if you don't get your period at all.

It takes your body a while to sync up to periods, though, especially if you're just starting to get them. Mine were pretty regular during the start, but it takes your body maybe between three to five years to get into the routine.

Honestly, I think you definitely should visit a gynecologist. Even if it makes you uncomfortable to ask your mom—this might be something more serious than it looks and you'll want to stop it before it gets out of hand.

about the kind of aphrodite daughter that daphne is !

some of the old traditions of the aphrodite cabin don’t fly with her. the book they have sizing guys’ dicks and stating which girl is an easy lay? outdated and in need of a fistful of patriarchy-smashing. –– but daphne’s not a perfect feminist. she’ll shout her unease about the girls’ section, but is oddly quiet when it comes to the guys. she doesn’t always realize her hypocrisies, and tbh needs to be called out on it, so she can learn from it.

daphne believes 100% in the power of love (shamelessly projecting here idegaf there’s a reason daphne is my fav ever and this is part of it) because she sees the strength of it. romeo and juliet showed what happens when love is questioned, and while she doesnt think its a romantic/positive movie, per say, it shows the strength of her mother’s powers. same thing goes for the trojan war. the things people would do for love, for beauty are almost scary. (beauty is terror, anyone???)

on the note of it being almost scary, it’s universally canon for me that daphne has had to deal with her fair share of sexism and misogyny, but even more so as a daughter of aphrodite. one she’d learned that she could charmspeak, she began to use it to her benefit, in the attempt to change people’s minds. but it never lasted forever. it’s frustrating for her, wanting to change people’s minds, but not always being able to

while she idolizes aphrodite, it’s somewhat of a double-edged sword where sometimes she’s proud to have looks and skill on her side and to be able to be more than a stereotype, as well as having a deep understanding of what it means to be underrated and looked down on for things like beauty and yk, simply being a girl. but there’s also times when she resents all that, but not because of aphrodite, really, but because of the world they live in, where something as powerful is love is scoffed at. so many people misunderstand what her mother is all about, and this fills daphne with a kind of frustration that isn’t easily resolved. it’s a subject that she (lol and me rip) is passionate about

another thing thats universally canon for daph is that she has a deep love for mystery writing. since she was never really into mystery solving with mystery inc. in this verse probs, she had to get her passion out somehow, and she began writing at a young age. im thinking when she got to camp, she kept it a secret, because she saw a deep set divide in what was expected of an aphrodite daughter. you could say she’s a little insecure about it, and would rather keep her writing to herself. that being said, she makes jokes about “her next book being about [x]” etc. etc. but when it comes down to it, she’ll only talk about it with people she really trusts, esp. since mystery writing is so hard and a part of her worries that she’s not smart enough to “pull it off”

daphne’s a big believer in self love and loving yourself the way you are. that being said, im sure she’s attempted a few makeover campaigns before and then ended up learning from the experience that some people are more comfortable the way they are and thats okay. on the flip side, there are some people that want her help and she’s more than willing to help them.

i subscribe to THIS head-canon, that the aphrodite cabin has a book full of attractions and genders, etc. so that anyone confused about how they identify might be able to gain some clarity. daphne being bisexual herself found it a little helpful, along with the fact that so many different genders and sexualities all existed within the cabin.

my hc that Daphne suffers from PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) stands true even in this verse, because aphrodite represents a lot of different beauty ideals, and sometimes beauty is ugly, sometimes beauty comes with zits and extra hair and a body that doesn’t always work in tandem, and that’s okay!

also her purple eyes are still totally a thing bc some aphrodite children have kaleidoscope eyes that reflect all the different colors, so daphne’s eyes mediate between indigo, violet and deep blue aight aight aight

when it comes training and fighting, daphne’s a pro at kicking butt. there’s a lot of repressed anger inside this girl and it comes out on the battlefield. she loves flipping the switch between pretty and deadly. it comes as a little thrill to her when she proves people wrong and shows that there’s more to her than a pretty face. that being said, some things gotta stay the same and yk ya girl got tangled up in traps a few times before. but yk, shes getting better on getting out of them on her own, and not having to resort to being saved

tbh im thinking she wanted to be cabin counsellor for a while, but now that she has it, she’s lost and doesn’t know what to do. she wants to be the best the cabin deserves but she’s unused to people believing in her, and shes unused to really believing in herself.

also omg, the idea that daphne loves love sm, but actually she’s had her heart broken more than her fair share. she’s been taken advantage of, and had her emotions played with, so she knows the dark side of it more than anything. and yet she still has hope? i think thats kind of magical tbh

I'm driving uninsured right now because for me to get car insurance is $900 every six months. That would crush me financially right now. Car Insurance - Young Driver 18 years old Male - NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!?

I have recently passed my driving test (3 days ago!) and will be buying a car ASAP as I have a job lined up and have just left school. I've tried tens of comparison sites and even rang some insurance companies direct to try and get a better quote... I have looked at the smallest possible engine size, that being 0.8l and 1l engines. I've looked at cars such as FORD KA, Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Micra, Renault Clio and a few others too. The cheapest quote I have found for all of the cars is for a 2000 Ford KA 1.3l 3dr 4 seats (the smallest KA engine size possible) and that price was 3,800 paying monthly with a company called My Policy . However, I have used various other KA registration plates all the same engine size but some being 2003 models or 2005 and the insurance jumps to over 6,000! I haven't found another FORD KA cheaper than 5,500 and obviously if I can't get that one particular car out of the thousands for sale that insurance quote will be invalid anyway. Basically, I've tried everything. Adding named drivers (with lots of driving experience 30+ years), putting my car in a locked garage, on the road, tried different cars - models, registration plates, ages, engine sizes, and not to forget the countless comparison sites. The funny thing is with MyPolicy I went onto their site directly to get a quote and they were unable to give me a quote when entering exactly the same information into the Tiger.co.uk comparison site, that site brought up the 3,800 quote with MyPolicy but when I use their site directly they can't give me a quote... I know insurance is based on MANY factors, believe me I understand that. I tried entering different post codes (just out of curiosity) and it did help, but only fractionally. It just seems (other than the 1 obscure quote of 3,800 on ONE car, out of the 100+ I've tried) that I can't get a quote cheaper than 5,000 for a car with the smallest engine size and insurance group possible... I bought a car off of my coworker a few months back, and everything is in my name. I had paid for insurance but I was going through a rough patch and it lapsed. My mother, whom is living with me, decided to be nice and pay for a month of insurance, through a new company. This is a new policy, as my old one had lapsed. Recently though, my mother and myself have had a falling out. She's holding my car over my head. She says since she paid for a month of insurance she has free reign over using my car. The car is in my name, and as far as I'm aware based on documents the insurance is as well. The only difference is she paid for that one month of insurance for me. And that month she paid for is still active. So like I said, she is holding the car over my head. I left my house the other night with my car key so she couldn't use it - This is after everyone I asked that I knew told me to take the keys. She is also living with me, I am renting the home. She is making threats through text messages saying that if I don't return the car key she will cancel my policy. Is that possible for her to do? She just paid for a month of insurance, and I believe I'm completely in control of my policy. I don't believe it can be cancelled through her calling. Is that possible? Anyone know? So not only do I own the car, I also rent the house. Legally I don't believe she can hold my own car over my head. Also, to add... After taking my keys, I left my home and went to a my girlfriends to get away for a while. follow up on the pcos, i had a panic attack thursday and had my dad take me to the doctor i got blood test done to check my hormones etc my doctor said if there is something wrong they can give me medication to fix my hormones. Now just waiting for the results is making me nervous. My family thinks i'm being paranoid b/c they see nothing wrong and think peach fuzz is okay. I know Emily answered your ask last time but since she’s no longer an admin, I hope I can provide some help :)

You’ve gone to the doctor, correct? They said they’d call once the results are in, correct? I know that some of the symptoms you’re experiencing can seem a lot like symptoms of PCOS but we can’t say anything with accuracy until the results are in. It’s hard to not freak out about it. It’s like having a constant headache for months and trying to not think you have a brain tumour or some sort of clot in the brain. It’s hard but try to focus on the fact that you’ve gone to see a doctor. You’ve done what is needed for a diagnosis.

Depending on your level of paranoia, usually it can help to further understand the symptoms of PCOS. You can calm yourself by finding out more about the issue. Finding out that you need to feel a certain way, see a certain symptom can calm you. It may also help knowing that you have a good idea of the course of treatment that can help you once the diagnosis is possible. Depending on the illness, you can work on some home treatment that can improve your overall health.

However, if you suffer from constant paranoia, I highly suggest you talking to a therapist about it in addition to your doctor. Getting answers from your doctor will help you deal with some of the paranoia but discussing the issue with a therapist can help you find other ways of coping with it. So if this is something that you’re struggling with, please consider it. I think it’ll be a good step to take in dealing with your negative thoughts.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a peach fuzz in itself. I think some people are just more “hairy” than others in their genetics. It’s not that they’re programmed unattractive but it was an evolutionary step that helped them survive and thrive in the environment they were put into. So this gene could’ve been very helpful to your ancestors. My family is asian and my 7 year old cousin got a pretty hunky moustache for his age and there’s nothing wrong with that.

So for the mean time, try to remind yourself that you’ve done what you can and right now you’re just waiting for the lab to report back on the results of your tests. Please also consider counselling for your paranoia and negative thoughts. I’d give some suggestions but I’m not entirely sure what negative thoughts you’re having and which method would help. Try talking to a friend or someone you trust about these thoughts. Write them down and try to reason about it. Why do you think that? What can you do about it? How can you solve it? Looking at the thoughts objectively afterwards can be extremely helpful as well.
