Some more advice for fellow adults: set your ego aside and let younger people (even kids!) educate and teach you. There is no shame in looking to a younger person for education and knowledge. It is, actually, a big facet of humanity that we teach each other - why, then, does that teacher need to be the Right Age in order for you to be willing to learn from them?

Today I learned that @neil-gaiman—among others who I was happily surprised to see—modeled for a book of knitting patterns called Geek Knits (2015) by Joan of Dark [Toni Carr] with photographs by Kyle Cassidy (ISBN 9781250051387 for those of you interested in the patterns!).

God, not me going down a rabbithole learning about traditional vietnamese lacquer painting and being overcome by the need to get into this craft. Like, perhaps I am Many-Much biased but sơn mài is one of the most unique and beautiful styles of lacquer art. I wish this artform had more international recognition because it’s absolutely incredible.

And I’m so pissed that there has been little to no international interest in it, because I’ve been obsessed with lacquer art since I was a kid, but whenever I tried to learn more about the process, all the info I found was about maki-e. Even now, when I look for materials to try it myself, I’m stuck with sourcing urushi, and it’s kind of heartbreaking. I want to learn and participate in my culture’s artistic heritage, but the only way for me to do so is to rely on another culture’s popularity and materials.

There is nothing else in the world like this. Like, holy fucking shit.

I'm not even sure how long these took me to make but I FINISHED KNITTING MY FIRST PAIR OF SOCKS!!

I've had such a great time with these and learnt so much. I've used double pointed needles for the first time, been working in the round, actually succeeded at ribbing after the flop on my jumper and managed the dreaded heel turn! There's definitely a lot still to learn, I managed to do the kitchener stitching on the outside of BOTH socks somehow, they're a little bit on the small side so l need to sort my tension out (which I'm hoping to solve with blocking - wish me luck!) and the laddering is still quite prominent.

This was all round such a fun project and I'm so excited to try again and hopefully improve as I go!
