I Will Rescue You (NewtxReader)

Based around the song "Rescue" by Lauren Daigle. Specifically the lines "I will send out an army to find you in the middle of the darkest night it's true I will rescue you. I will never stop marching to reach you in the middle of the hardest fight it's true I will rescue you."

Being a runner wasn't an easy task, everyone knew it. It was the most challenging job of all, the most physically straining, and downright most terrifying. So when the glade's strongest, fastest runner ends up trapped inside for a night, most give up hope.

There was no telling how it happened, but while running the maze one afternoon, Minho and Y/n separated. Minho searched for as long as he could, returning to the glade just minutes before the doors closed. He comes out tired and weak, falling to his knees and panting. Alby and Newt come over as fast as they can, followed by Thomas, Frypan, Winston, and Gally. Minho was immediately bombarded with questions from his friends, most asking about you.

"Where is she Minho?" Newt spoke through gritted teeth, his eyes darting between his friend and the walls of the maze, waiting eagerly for you to appear.

"We got separated," Minho spoke, taking Alby's offered hand and standing up. Just three words, that was all it took for Newt to step cautiously towards the maze, threatening with every small step to run into the maze to find you. Alby, noticing the boy's intentions took the second-in-command's wrist, pulling him back towards the group a bit.

"She's going to die out there Alby," Newt spoke, his voice wavering. "I have to go get her"

"If you leave you'll die too. Just have faith, Newt" Alby spoke, clearly and calmly. Clearly, he wasn't understanding the gravity of the situation as the wind blew through the maze and out into the glade, blowing Newt's hair back and out of his face.

The group's panic grew quickly as they realized you were not rounding the corner just in time, being effortlessly flawless as usual. In fact, there was no sign of you anywhere. How was this possible? You had the maze perfectly memorized for years. Of all people, you were the least likely to get lost.

Newt tries to pull away from Alby as the doors start closing, the giant concrete slabs moving slowly, but causing even more fear to surface in the blonde's eyes.

Finally, you round the corner from the right, causing Newt's eyes to perk up. But it leaves quickly as he realizes that you're moving slowly, limping and clutching your stomach. It doesn't help that you're looking at him with desperate eyes, practically begging him to help you. The walls are even closer to closing, and there is no denying that you will not make it in time. Some of the gladers are yelling, encouraging you to keep going and to have confidence.

Newt, however, is trying desperately to free himself from Alby and Minho's grip, which is the only thing keeping him from trapping himself inside the maze too.

Finally, you give up, falling to your knees and smiling sadly at Newt, still clutching your stomach. You calmly accept defeat as the doors shut, allowing yourself one last look at Newt before being swallowed in fear.

Meanwhile, in the glade, Newt is screaming at Alby and Minho, pushing them around in front of the closed doors.

"I could have helped her! We both could have made it!" He screams, pushing Minho back as hard as he could, only causing a stumble back towards the tall, well-built, boy.

"And what if you both got stuck? What then? Huh, Newt?" Alby yells, scoffing and turning away from his friend to walk away.

"She belongs to the maze now" He spoke once more, causing an uproar of anger in the blonde boy. But instead of taking it out on his friends, he turns and punches the maze door as hard as he can, causing his hand to nearly break. He falls to his knees with a heavy sob, the weight, and desperation he feels finally becoming apparent to the group. Some cry, some look down in defeat, and others just shake their heads.

Finally, they all leave Newt to his grief, glancing back as they walk away to see him holding his chest with heaving sobs, his forehead nearly touching the grass as he sits on his legs.

After a few minutes of helpless crying, he finally lays his back against the cold concrete, lays his head against it, and closes his eyes, his arms resting on his knees which are propped up in front of him. The person he mourns for sits in a similar position, just mere feet away but separated by so much distance.

You cry quietly, tears escaping your eyes and sliding down your face as you hold your knees close to your chest. Your backpack lies next to you, begging for you to pick it up and start running, to make any effort to stay alive through the night just as Thomas, Minho, and Alby once did.

Suddenly, you hear soft, but audible words from through the small crack left between the doors of the maze. The familiar voice sends comfort through you, allowing you to finally let the weight and fear of being trapped in the maze sizzle out for a moment.

"I will send out an army to find you, in the middle of the darkest night," Newt speaks, his voice cold and shaken.

"It's true, I will rescue you" He speaks once more, assuring himself that he WILL get you back, even if he can't run to your side.

Meanwhile, you smile softly and touch your hand against the cold walls of the maze, sending a message back through the crack to let Newt know you can hear him.

"I will never stop marching to reach you, in the middle of the hardest fight," You speak, causing the boy on the other side to turn his whole body around due to the sound.

"It's true, I will rescue you" You repeat after him, closing your eyes before standing and picking up your backpack, newfound confidence surging through you. If Newt needs you, you are going to come back to him, no matter what it takes.

He smiles through more tears, standing up himself and hearing footsteps slowly growing further away from the other side of the concrete. He closes one eye and peers through the crack just in time to see you running around a corner, a slight limp causing you to be slower than usual. Newt chuckles through tears, his confidence growing with yours.

That night, Newt slept at the maze doors, covered by a blanket Minho later brought to him during the night. Alby also occasionally checked on him, making sure nothing bad occurred while he slept as close as possible to where you would return if you had survived your night in the maze.

As he woke, Newt's worry returned to him, and he stood up quickly. His eyes studied the maze doors as he desperately waited for them to open, hope clinging to him as he imagined what could have happened to you out there. Other gladers began joining him, waking with the rising sun and returning to the spot where they learned you had been doomed.

Minho was the first to arrive, standing by Newt's side to reassure him as best he could. After that came Alby, the leader, the man in charge. The rest meant nothing to Newt, all he needed was his two friends beside him as he waited to learn your fate.

Meanwhile, you ran through the maze, relieved to have shaken off the two grievers that had been after you all night. You twisted around every turn, knowing exactly where you were headed. As you neared your destination you heard the doors opening and slowed to a stop in front of the concrete entrance to the maze.

You smiled, standing with relief as the doors opened and revealed the one person whose words kept you going through the night you were trapped in the maze. Newt also felt a smile of pure joy and excitement dance on his lips as he saw you standing at the threshold of the maze.

Finally, after an entire night of worry and separation, you ran into Newt's arms and allowed yourself to rest.

So this uh, was asked over a year ago. But hey, it's answered now!

1. What's a unique skill Nate has? Is there any reason why he can do it?

Unusually for someone living in a small, quiet town like Aldstow, Nate knows a ton of skateboarding tricks. One of his uncles got him a skateboard when he was seven years old, and for five years that was what he spent almost all of his non-school time doing.

2. What are Connie's favorite possessions? Why? (sentimentality, history, price, etc.)

Some of his books, for different reasons. One because it was the textbook for one of his favorite college classes, and is still an informative read even now. Another because it was a gift from his parents that he re-read a lot in childhood. And one just because the leather cover feels nice in his hands and it has a good heft to it.

3. Does Amanda get jealous easily? If so, what usually causes it?

On occasion, a really attractive woman persistently flirting with her SO has made Amanda jealous, but not often. Her ex Simon got hit on at least twice by men, which she found hilarious (Simon was incredibly straight), and once she and Lanzo work things out, she finds she doesn’t care so much about people flirting with him, partially because she trusts him, mostly because she knows from first-hand experience that getting through Lanzo’s emotional barriers enough to even start an actual relationship is way harder than any aspiring homewrecker would have the patience for.

4. Is Ash a good gift-giver? What does he tend to give as gifts?

Ash’s gift-giving instincts are fairly reliable if he knows the recipient well enough, but he’s missed the mark more than once. If he barely knows the individual, it’s even worse.

In order of likelihood, books, tea, candles. He recognizes that other people like things other than what he likes, but it’s just so much easier to give things he knows he’d like to get. This is the chief problem with his gift-giving.

5. What's Lanzo's reputation like? Does this reputation contrast what he's really like?

Lanzo has a lot of different reputations.

At work, to all but a few perceptive regulars, he’s the worldly-wise bartender with a mysterious past who’s willing to listen to you ramble about your problems but avoids offering advice, except weirdly specific things on random occasions.

This is not completely inaccurate, but it’s definitely more of how Lanzo would like to be seen than how he actually is.

To those perceptive regulars, he’s an average guy who’s lived long enough to have some weird stories, and is charismatic enough to weave a convincing air of mystery out of it.

This is considerably more accurate.

To those in the house, he’s laid-back and easy to get along with for the most part, though you have to beware his sense of humor and occasional desire for chaos, but he’s really good at smoothing things over if he upsets you, and there’s also the chance that he’ll be incredibly perceptive about something that’s bothering you and have some oddly specific but actually really helpful advice for the situation.

8. What does Aidan's dream house look like?

A treehouse, for starters. Sparse on furniture, but a lot of hammocks and tall shelves with space for perching. Nuts or fruit-bearing plants in the vicinity, as long as he doesn’t have to tend them himself. And a swell video game system, for when Nate visits.

9. If Niner could change one part of her appearance, what would it be?

If we’re allowing changes that are not biologically possible, she’d made her nails grow faster and break less easily. She’s always trying to grow them out super-long, but then one of them breaks on something and she has to trim them all down or otherwise it feels weird, and the process starts all over again.

10. What's a simple thing that brings Q joy?

Fireflies.

13. How forgiving is Angie? What does she consider unforgivable?

To Angie, forgiveness is a sacred responsibility. For the most part, she doesn’t find it hard to forgive, even if the other person doesn’t seem genuinely sorry.

She doesn't consider anything unforgivable as such, but one of the worst sins in her eyes is a total lack of principle. Hypocrisy or failure to live up to your own principles is bad, but at least those people believe in something.

14. Who does Chris go to in a crisis/emergency? Any particular reason why he chooses that person?

Any situation dire enough to force Chris to seek help most likely requires professionals, like firefighters or S.W.A.T., but assuming it was something sufficiently non-urgent for him to reach out to someone specific, that would be his sister Marie. The reason being, Chris would hate having to ask for help, and his sister would be able to figure out the situation with the minimal amount of actually explaining/asking for help, and would respond in the way most soothing to his ego.

16. What food does Reagan absolutely hate?

Beets. The first time she tried them, they made her gag almost to the point of vomiting. The lengths to which her aunt was willing to make her eat them, on the one or two occasions per year she served them, only reinforced Reagan’s hatred of them.

17. Does Neal show a lot of affection, or is he pretty reserved?

Very reserved, unless he’s comfortable and very close with someone. Then, in private, he’s very affectionate, and eager for reciprocation.

18. If you had to represent Ian with a flower, color, and animal, what would you choose?

Flower: Dandelion. Grows easily, bright and friendly, some consider it an annoying weed.

20. Is Elise easy to wake up in the morning, or grouchy and sleepy?

Closer to easy to wake up. Elise isn’t a bright-and-shiny, “good morning world!” kind of person, but once she’s up she wakes up quickly, especially if she has some caffeinated tea or coffee.

22. What's Julie's silliest or most unusual fear/phobia?

There are certain kinds of elevators that make her anxious -- it's more an aesthetic thing than anything, but "pure metal" elevators are worse than ones with glass, carpeting, etc. It's a combination of some bad experiences, a few memorable elevator scares in media, and (the biggest reason) one really terrible, very memorable nightmare when her dad was sick.

24. Is Lauren a fussy eater?

She could be incredibly picky when she was a child. As an adult, she’s less so, but mostly because she lives on her own and so she gets to make all the choices about what she eats.

25. What are Jerome's dreams like?

He only remembers a handful of dreams he’s had in his life. They were intense, colorful, and very, very bizarre.

27. Is Kayla forgetful? What does she tend to forget? (plans, phone, keys, etc.)

She has an exceptionally good memory, even once she’s human.

29. Is Knife a good cook? If she is, what does she like to make?

Unless heating soup or one of those “just add water” macaroni and cheese bowls in the microwave counts as cooking, Knife doesn’t really cook.

31. What holiday does Hannah like the most? (Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, etc.)

Christmas!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. She starts practicing Christmas songs in October, helps her parents (and grandmother, when she was alive) decorate the day after Thanksgiving, and makes gift bags for all her friends at school. Her favorite thing (after presents) is when they go out to look at Christmas lights: they bundle up, go out and get fast food to eat in the car, then drive through the best-decorated neighborhoods her dad knows of. She loves everything about it, though: the music, the cookies, visiting (some of) her family. She also likes the Christmas story her dad reads.

33. Is Elarin adventurous, or does she prefer to stay in her safe zone?

Elarin was probably crawling out of her “safe zone” when she was a baby. She’s scared of very little, and almost never shows it when she is.

34. What's Meaghan's favorite drink? (Coffee, tea, juice, hot chocolate, soda, etc.)

Some type of relaxing herbal tea from a planet she’s visited. She also likes a few alcoholic beverages, though she doesn’t drink those often.

38. Does Leah get lost easily, or is she good with directions?

She’s better than most with directions. Leah has a good grip on the cardinal directions, which helps. Her memories of the pre-war Boston area interfere sometimes, but they also help -- she just needs to remember to look for half-collapsed ruins instead of skyscrapers sometimes.

45. Is Avery always late, on time, or early?

Avery can be anywhere from two hours early to four days late; the one thing she never is is on time. She makes an effort for people like Aveline, with schedules and deadlines and things, but she just doesn’t have a punctual bone in her body.

as "let's see if will roland's birthday prompts any billions production clues from posts castmates may make about it" continues to yield "no one's posting about it, while some castmates post about other people's birthdays," already having more thoughts abt [i'm sure he'll show up in at least one episode even if only to be written out] type things like:

a) would be insulting if winston is fired to serve a subplot about philip and taylor having some difficulty in finding their footing re: working together as coheads, like, we're good at anticassandraing things and have gone "lol what if philip & taylor disagreed abt quants in that philip preferred winston. which he feasibly could," so what if instead it's philip arguing that winston should be fired to streamline things or because everyone who's not taylor will want him gone b/c they dislike him, and in learning how to successfully work together, taylor's like well alright. like, don't pit these elements against each other the insult is instead just Anyone, higher ups or lower downs, wanting winston gone b/c they dislike him, so he's fired

b) winston getting bullied by anyone or everyone is seen as him distracting them &/or provoking it with his presence, so he's fired winston being friends w/tuk is seen as a bad influence of loserdom on the latter (or distraction, or annoying, or w/e) so he's fired some Problem that needs solving or otherwise some need to fire Some people that really doesn't have much to do with him gets him fired anyways. like 5x05 all over again, isn't it always. or even if he's particularly involved in some problem you know it'd be something other people could get away with just fine. see:

c) what's even "a problem" like that despite everyone being in a hostile workplace, winston is especially, and we're so graced with dollar bill back on the premises who has already harassed and threatened and assaulted him (not only limiting the lattermost to something like "did he hit you, and like, closed fist, and i mean pretty hard. well that's just what he's like, you're fine." or the way like sabotaging a toilet is just epic pranks and only a problem if something looks bad to theoretical investors and we should talk about what tmc people might be doing to deserve it) while rian has been holding down the fort bullying and using winston. perfectly in line with everything if this kind of thing prompting any hostility in turn is like, nobody blinks at the other stuff, wherein if anything everyone keeps trying to fix dollar bill's feelings for him and talk about how who he's being awful to needs to appease him asap, and rian simply Wanting to use winston as a chew toy is just taken in stride while separately people have already been motivated by theoretically looking out for her / supporting her in various ways as well. whereas if winston Acts like he regards her as a hostile party, which she is, rather than seeming to operate in good faith that they can have regular constructive basic respect interactions, which he does while those decent interactions seem to come through rarely and unreliably, then i'm sure he'd be seen as mean / starting shit / out of line / etc, especially when it seems him Disrespecting the Rules & Social Hierarchy that should disallow him from like, speaking unless it's to self-flagellate, means people see him as aggressive or whatever. basically the classic scenario like, kid's bullied at school, they're supposed to just ignore it or it's otherwise "not that bad" / stuff gotten away with, even if supposedly it's like well just tell an authority figure here, that won't/doesn't work, any resulting obvious tension/dislike between the kid and whoever is like "uh oh, a Both Sides problem" at best, same if there's a physical fight or something or else it's like well That was unacceptable and if it was initiated by Your reaction to all other kinds of terrible treatment for however long, you're the problem. not that i expect winston to throw a punch about it, but, figuratively / parallel to this scenario

d) winston is sick of his deluxe hostile environment, doesn't actually like whatever coheading changes, sick of rian and/or dollar bill specifically, and/or doesn't appreciate some other goings-on, like one that results in him even being threatened with firing, and gets to just quit as has regularly seemed like something he might want to do anyways since 4x11 and intermittently on

e) not really another Way to imagine they kick him out but was thinking how like, Is a reason we're shown that taylor and rian hugging in the middle of an office was seen by i guess winston alone gonna be further relevant at all and about him making anything of it, which, he really couldn't possibly be wrong about any inferences. but going :/ at the taylor and rian dynamic just as a spontaneous, contained event would be self-explanatory too. but had the thought of like, maybe it's all "well taylor's been here 5 seasons and is in a more prominent position than last season, throw a PR problem at them for the first time for real, just as a shakeup / something that throws them off" wherein like winston wouldn't even have to be there to be cited in something like yeah i was fired or quit or whatever else and my former boss is dating an employee i think. or seems to have a real personal preference for them if not personal somethingship. which is true lmfao like? even if winston ""wrongly"" assumes they're dating like "oh sorry these claims are ridiculous, i only proposed as much to this employee who i already was informally mentoring and do favor such that she was promoted offscreen after like half a season to be able to make trades and this only came up when her using that capacity to do some shit she could've been fired for had me like 'but i'll take the heat for it' b/c any feeling that i'd wanna fire you is worth working through as a personal problem, and that employee turned me down not only just b/c apparently dating through work is too much (but not hooking up through work) but because she's afraid of how much she could love me, and now we're further personal somethings or who even knows what's ever been going on and so who can say if we were supposed to have fully closed the door on dating or not, even." wherein like....someone then doing further research consulting with every named tmc employee, in this hypothetical (and ignoring any hypothetical new, named/dialogued hires) scenario all now Former employees except rian who clearly won't have been firedor quit at the start of season 7, b/c yknow god forbid lmao....like, oh i'm taylor's best friend so no comment except that when i'm mad at them i'll apparently say that i always thought they inhumanly don't have feelings and all, very helpful. then there's like, oh yeah i was taylor's employee and dated them until business misalignments lead to a less than ideal breakup, and then kind of an aftershock of that for fun i guess. and then yeah i was also taylor's employee and knew they were dating another employee and i disapproved if only b/c i told them it could look bad but then also one of the reasons leading up to my quitting was having difficulty getting in touch with them while the other employee lived with them at least part of the time and i didn't seem to be a fan of that bonus access re: discussing business getting in the way of the formal structure / chain of command or whatever at work as well which is part of what i was already there to file a complaint over, so....even just the "it does look bad / people do think you leverage status for access to sex through employees" like no but that's My boss though. but also just that yeah taylor has at least tried to date employees twice, and their personal preference does affect professional matters, though that's also just like, pick any place of work and any slice of it, may not be a meritocracy after all versus how much it matters that some people are popular and/or liked by the right people while others can be recognized as Good Employees on paper but be left where they are or antagonized by peers or higher ups b/c of "failing" at the popularity contest aspect. and this could just be some new Kind of problem for taylor, and/or their just having to question themself more. or else go "ugh leave it to winston" and shrug it off once whatever's smoothed over.

f) winston isn't fully written off but rather it's something zany like, the twist is dollar bill coming back (god forbid he didn't either) while mafee, who evidently sees taylor outside work despite it all, is like eh we'll get dinners sometimes too, and does not likewise return despite saying he's the one who'd consider it. winston, being fired, or having quit, or just being unhappy w/things enough to consider it, is like well you're kind of regular at me sometimes and can't yell at me abt loyalty to taylor if neither of us work for them and you have weird confusing ideas about how they should be loyal to you if anything, and i can do the work of 50 phds, and i know you don't know shit abt the math and quanting but if you just leave it up to me entirely, that's pretty much been my work experience thus far anyways. then he'd be filming on different sets, possibly more rarely, and also dan soder has been likewise elusive but is also on site on the two even vaguely or implicitly [s7 production] related pics will's turned up in.

g) idk billions feel free to prank us where once again between seasons we worry winston could be written off but then he isn't, but elusivity paired with suddenly now castmates w/no mention of him for [march 5th] and [we are doing any bday acknowledgments] overlaps that otherwise get posts, especially. weird even if he Was written out in ep one but okay then

#winston billions #maybe he'd feel petty after being disposed of; maybe someone's doing really specific investigative journalism lol....#although also the idea that lauren's known one ep return last season was like. will This be an unfriendly ex gf/employee using insider info #and if winston were to be fired or quit; no matter the specific reason behind that it's like. how would he have only the fondest memories #he's been here for taylor & i imagine it can be inferred he hopes his Skills being valued are a shot at also being valued as a person #but if it seems like he was only ever begrudgingly kept around & given that [useful tool] status while other employees got more personal &#preferential treatment; which like everyone save sara kinda but she at least got to have substantial & frequent enough exchanges w/taylor #while here's a quant peer he even likes & does keep trying to be amicable with but she also regards & treats him as usable & disposable #while taylor at least ignores & allows this while v much preferring & Would Be dating this employee like. probably could be pissed abt that #and just to go off the shits lol like oh Petty Ex Employee behavior But....add in tayston fwb history lmaooo Like. oof #with some end of s3 into s4 timeline especially like where maybe winston wants a personal somethingship w/them as well but instead the #whole fwbship (& any undiscussed / not directly acknowledged somethingship along with it) was dropped when taylor dated lauren #like yes add in nonzero petty ex something as well lol. or Wish i could be a petty ex but got burned by the implication that like #no taylor doesn't not date employees as a rule nor even seem to worry abt it much personally; On Paper especially re propositioning rian #but also combining [dated lauren] and [dated oscar] stats it's like yeah they Ought to consider winston a romantic candidate as well lol #he Does get [autistic character] different negative / diminishing treatment all round from all elements so like. grievances lol #and of course taylor could choose to be petty ex employer/something as well like great so we're fighting now #and if winston's sharing the other trivia he's not sharing His personal history w/them. and taylor could threaten to but isn't gonna share #that b/c it'd make them look worse too (i am aware of the gfy proximity at this point yes lmfao girl help) but Can throw it in his face #can go after knowing he had that personal somethingship with them; the closest gfy esque thing here would be if taylor was also a bit too #clueless like well that is just hypocritical of you to take issue w/it Or take advantage of it when it suits you....w/o realizing that #element of like yeah i'm jealous actually?? remember when you dumped me to date someone else when [why didn't you date Me]....#or be Aware like well you're jealous actually. and winston can be like Yeah?
