Nettles, Rhaenyra, Laena, Mysaria, and the Prize that is DAEMON TARGARYEN
Tumblr media
Now, I'm not going to sit here and police shipping. I'm also not going to act as though better writers and thinkers long before me haven't talked about the same phenomenon of centring men in women's narratives as a way to value the women. However, as a person in this fandom, I do want to apply this thought to the shipping discourse of Daemon Targaryen because it has become exhausted.
We treat this man as though he's the prize to gain when these women are in relationships with him. In the sense that when Daemon picks these women to have a relationship with they gain a value and devalue the women he leaves behind. We see this with him going:
from Rhea and Mysaria to Laena.
He finally has a Valyrian bride who matches his spirit and can give him Valyrian children. They get along and are of equal standing.
From Laena to Rhaenyra.
He moves on, finds real happiness, finds his true family, becomes the Targaryen he was destined to be with his Targaryen bride at his side, and their Targaryen children with his real family
From Rhaenyra to Mysaria .
Rhaenyra became mournful and wasn't as she once was. Him and Mysaria just have this connection, and Rhaenyra approves.
From Rhaenyra and Mysaria to Nettles.
Daemon finally found someone he could look past himself for. The singers say they end up together. He does all of this and leaves the Rhaenyra to her death because Nettles left. He's finally ready to settle down and grow old. She saved him.
All of this is an overgeneralised hyperbole of conversations I've seen, but they always centre Daemon choosing these women to be in a relationship with as their biggest accomplishment in the narrative. Him at their side is the biggest deal, and when he leaves them, they are discarded and replaced by his new love interest.
The issue with this
Prioritising a man, this man, as the main factor in these relationships, discredit the women who exist outside of him and make it seem as though he's the only thing that adds value to them. The language being used, in short, dismisses their personhood and equates them to something he can own, discard and replace at whim, and he alone adds value to them. It's icky language especially with his game card.
Lady Rhea: wasn't even her choice. She hated him and refused to give him an heir to inherit Runestone. In the show, she makes sure he returns and kills her by insulting his sexual prowess.
Mysaria: is complicit and involved in his worst action but always ensures she pulls herself up with it. Being his courtesan made her wealthy, almost made her his wife. Then she's complicit in blood and cheese and gets herself promoted to the Lady of Whispers to the Queen, eventually putting an end to him.
Laena: CLAIMED THE LARGEST DRAGON IN THE WORLD AS A TEEN. Is quite literally the mother of the girls that survived the Dance. Her blood inherits her house's seat.
Rhaenyra: Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Had men avenge her death, and her son sat on the iron throne after her.
Nettles: created the religion that forged the most dangerous tribe in the Vale of Arryn. Claimed a wild dragon and committed alleged treason and escaped.
I'm not saying Daemon isn't important. I'm not saying he doesn't play a part. I'm saying that when we have these conversations about him and these women and the progression of his relationships with them, I hope we can reach a place where the idea that he leaves them isn't a jab or joke against one woman for the sake of the one he chooses. It's getting strange.
Women don't lose value because of a man. Ever.
This also applies to Baela and her adaptation in the show. She isn't uninteresting because she isn't a tomboy or like Daemon. They make her a political girl in the show and like Laena. That's not a loss. She's modelled after Rhaenys as well. She's just reflective of the women in her life. I'm sure she'll have a relationship to Daemon as well, but she's the Ward of Driftmark. That's quite interesting. We also have tomboys like Alysanne and Sabitha, so we aren't in a deficit by any means.

When I see people say that it was obvious that Daemon would end up being violent with Rhaenyra, because we saw he being violent with a random messenger he didn't know, and that he killed his first wife he never really frequent and he hated.

You don't know how a fictional character works huh ? Admit it.

I had a response to an anonymous message readied in my drafts but Tumblr has decided to fucking obliterate it so here goes nothing;
Basically I expressed my disappointment with the way they handled Rhea. Then I received a reply that stated that they made Daemon kill her, as opposed to her death in the book, because HBO dislikes the Targaryens (since they're an incestuous dynasty) and is scared that if they made them look more sympathetic, "people would come for them". Anon also mentioned something about Daemon being supposed to be portrayed as morally gray. And I uhhhh disagree. So here is, more or less, my response to all that.
I was not a part of the GOT fandom during Dany's character assassination but I dare assume HBO does not give a crap about the values of House Targaryen and whether the content of their shows is moral or not. If they minded giving incestuous relationships a platform, I doubt GOT would have seen a light of day at all. Streaming platforms don't tend to care about whether viewers will come for their heads or not. And if the audience finds certain characters likeable, they'll stick around to see more of them on the screen = more money for HBO.
That being said, I don't see the way they decided to handle the scene as some part of anti-Targaryen agenda. No, the answer is apparently far simpler: the man responsible for writing for this week's episode seems to be downright fucking goofy in his inability to comprehend the reading material he's being presented with.
I dreaded the way they were going to solve this [scene] not because I refused to believe he'd be willing to kill his wife but because this solution seems just. unnecessary and unnecessarily stupid. Did they add that in to make us believe he all of the sudden took a turn and decided to end Rhea to be able to marry Rhaenyra? For someone who marries her against many odds later on anyway... that seems like a weak argument. Idk, the scene just seemes disjointed and like a waste of time (and Rhea's character) to me.
And let's be clear, I do not care for Daemon being shown as likeable! He is anything but, most of the time! And when he does have his likeable moments, most can't help but wonder if they're without underlying intentions. So this is not to whine about Daemon being villainised, I wouldn't even readily agree on him being morally gray! No, it's just that we did not need to see him in his ratty lil cloak, spitefully bashing Rhea's head in with a rock to realise that the man is vile. We have already seen him doing vile things and there are many more to come. The scene simply felt childishly edgy to me. And on one hand I'm glad we even got to see Lady Royce and witness her taking absolutely none of Targaryen's nonsense, throwing facts left, right and centre, but ehhhhh at what cost.
*And before anyone mentions it, I know their marriage was fucking miserable and a political flop pretty much since the very beginning. And that for some reason they have been refused an annulment many times. Not the point I'm making here. We just did not need that scene from a narrative and technical perspective.

I'll Be With You
Summary: Did Daemon wish to abandon his wife never to give a sh*t about her ever again? Did Rhea think she would have to endure this treatment from her absentee Lord husband all her life? Would they ever find a way to live without having to deal with one another?
Or would fate change in the blink of an eye and somehow bring them closer together despite their painful past?
Pairing: Daemon Targaryen & Rhea Royce
Tumblr media
Set after the stepstones battle, this is the first part of an AU series that explores what could have been between Daemon and Rhea. This is also loosely based on an ongoing AU roleplay with my friend angree_baratheon over on AO3 and I've written it with slight variations here and there.
Chapter 1: Duty and Honour
Rhea had made an effort to avoid being around while he was indecent. Especially whenever the maester insisted that the prince should take a bath. Which was something he had considered necessary for two reasons. First, it was a means to shed his fever body sweat. And second, it gave Maester Purell a chance to inspect the wounds that the prince had gained from his battle at the Stepstones. Purell had informed the lady of the Runestones that her lord husband's wound had finally been able to close properly after days of it not doing so and that the effects of infection had also significantly reduced as well. Now it seemed that whatever fevers would happen would not be as bad nor as life-threatening as the days they had just passed.
This was a relief to Rhea. Because even if she did not have much fondness for her lord husband, she did not wish him dead either. It also meant that she would not have to be a widow. She was going to ignore the fact that their marriage was as good as dead for now and simply rejoice that her husband was going to live. The maester then added that the fatigue of having to fight off his infection for the past weeks and the bouts of fever he had suffered these nights was unlikely to leave any time soon. He also proceeded to advise her that the prince should remain strictly on bed rest. At least until his appetite was to return or the wound to his flank -- which had been the source of his concern -- was too close.
She was glad to know that at least he was not at risk of having his guts fall out of him. Or even worse, have them turn black and in threat of decaying away while the rest of him was still alive leaving him in a state of agonising life until he well, eventually did die. His guts were fine. His muscles were intact. And sure, he had several scars from gashes and burns but none of them had been as life-threatening as this wound that had given the maester much trouble in healing. She had heard of the manner in which her husband had conducted himself. As though he were a one-man army sent to rain hell on Craghas Drahar of Myr and his men. And how he had ultimately marched into the cave himself and slew the Crabfeeder with his mighty sword Dark Sister.
If one thing was certain about Daemon Targaryen, it was that he could be a fearsome force to be reckoned with when he so chose. She was well acquainted with that side of him. Well, at least the watered-down version of it anyway. Since they had been at each other's throats from the time they had been wed, he was ten and six while she was a year younger.
Much to Rhea's scruple, she had opted not to correct the maester in his thinking that she had absolutely any authority over her husband's state when she really didn't. If he were awake right then she knew he wouldn't want her here much less giving her opinions about what was right for him and what wasn't. She was simply here because she needed to be. Out of her sense of duty of being his wife. That was all it was. Or at least it was what she had told herself since she had been raised in this manner. To honour her duties no matter how unfavourable they might have seemed.
Rhea sighed as she sat down by the table full of reports and missives she had been working on since her arrival. She couldn't help but think about their past and how they had ended up in this current situation. It wasn't just the fact that they had been forced into this marriage, but also how Daemon had treated her over the years. She had tried to make it work, in the beginning at least. But as the months and years went on and his negligence became apparent. It seemed that no matter what she did, he would always find something to criticize or belittle her for. Rhea remembered the countless times he had insulted her looks, her intelligence, and even her family. It was as if he enjoyed making her feel small and insignificant.
But as she looked at him now, lying in his bed, weak and vulnerable, Rhea couldn't help but feel a twinge of pity. Maybe he wasn't as invincible as he had always made himself out to be. Maybe, just maybe, he needed her help now. Rhea shook her head, pushing the thought away. She couldn't afford to be naïve. She had seen how he had treated her before, and there was no guarantee that he would change. No, she had to stay strong, for her own sake.
As she got up from her seat, Rhea made a mental note to speak to Maester Purell about any further developments in Daemon's condition. She needed to stay informed, especially if she was going to take care of him. It wasn't something she wanted to do, but it was the right thing to do. For now however, she needed to take care of herself. She didn't wish to grow ill while looking after him since it wouldn't do either of them any good.
With a heavy heart, Rhea left the prince's tent, closing the flap softly behind her.
When she had returned several hours later, it had not been her intention to go in so soon since she was aware her husband had completed his daily bath and examination. But to her surprise, he was standing there. He was actually standing instead of lying in bed as he'd been these past days.
But he was standing and in only his breeches. his white wet hair cascading in droplets over the width of his exposed chest. She was taken aback by his appearance and did not instantly pull her gaze away or excuse herself from the chamber. Instead, her attention was drawn to the partially healed scars on his shoulder and chest, as well as the infected wound.
Rhea swallowed, recognising once more that her husband was a magnificent warrior: such strength, power, and tenacity to survive - like weeds, she thought blandly to herself. She grew more and more bitter as he came closer, invading her space as she found him suddenly drawing closer and then... he kisses her. Suddenly, and out of nowhere with no room to deny it was happening. And without any space where either of them could've played pretend.
To say that she was surprised would have been quite the understatement. Particularly given how her expression appeared to be so very telling of the feelings she currently had whirling inside her. Her mouth having fallen agape as her eyes stared at him in utter disbelief. Was this truly happening? She was more than aware that she hadn't been the one suffering a fever all these past weeks but right then she did feel extremely hot and feverish. What was this? How was this even happening? Was he in his right mind? So many questions raced through her mind while she stood frozen in her spot simply staring blankly at him. Knowing that she hadn't kissed him back. The last time she had was a brief peck on their wedding day that could hardly be constituted as a kiss and certainly wasn't anything like what was just happening But then gingerly, hesitatingly, and quite demurely not in the least all at once.
She found herself moving herself closer to him and actually reciprocating. Not eagerly nor boldly, no. But tentative in nature. Enough that she was sure he would've felt the pressure of her returning the kiss. She was being rather careful with her hands however and where she placed them. Trying not have them anywhere near his wounds. There was certainly no need to have a repeat of the last few days. She settled for settling them near his hips instead, but even then, her touch was featherlike, and barely there. Feeling too hesitant, that she couldn't touch him. She will always feel like she was not welcomed when it came to him. He had taught her that, after all.
When they finally part, a small, demure sigh is released from lips of the lady of Runestone. It had escaped her before Rhea could hold it back between her teeth, her tongue darting at the suspicious taste of him. She resisted the temptation to touch her lips like a young, inexperienced maiden who had just been kissed for the very first time. And as her brown eyes are slow to open, slow to take in the flickers from her lord husband's mouth to his own piercing eyes. She squints, watching him like with great scrutiny, before finally deciding to speak and in a whisper, she let her question be heard.
' You must have mistaken me for someone else, my lord husband. I'm afraid I am not your whore. '
----------------------------------------------------------
A nice, long soak was exactly what he had needed after days of being stuck in bed with a high fever that had made him far too ill for far too long. But now that he was on his own two feet once again, he certainly did not want to return to being an invalid. At least not by choice anyway. A bath had been the first course of action to rid himself of the misery of the past few several days although he wasn't certain exactly for how long he had been unconscious. He simply assumed it was a few short days.
However, if there was one not-too-bad thing that had come from all this, it was how devotedly his wife had sat by his bedside for most of his nights. At times, he wasn't even sure if it was really her or just an apparition. Because there was no way she would be tending to, was there? In the times he found himself waking in a delirious dream like state, he had often found her there. Sitting beside him. Or at the table. But she had been there. Never leaving him. It wasn't until he had finally risen that those visions returned to him like a flood of unbidden memories. Leaving him bewildered, in awe and quite curious even.
Yet, it wasn't until when he saw her come into his chambers right then. That his mind immediately realized that all of those vision were not a fever dream after all. She was actually here. And curiously enough, she was caring for him as well. Despite the way he had treated her all these years. Which he was more than aware had been the most unfavourable of manners. Except to say that he was not moved, in that very moment would have been quite the understatement.
And it was exactly why without much warning or thought, he had moved closer to her, pulled her chin up towards him and just kissed her. Not because he had seen her walk in on him in a state of undress and still wet from his bath. And not because he had caught the way her eyes roamed over the span of his naked chest and he could see the lack of shyness and even admiration. It was mostly because he had actually and truly wanted to kiss her. Even if he knew he would be surprising her, but he didn't really mind nor care for that in that moment. Nor did he think she would push him away either.
And she hadn't.
Curiously enough, she had even returned his kiss in the most softest of manners that made him wonder why he hadn't done this before. Except he knew exactly why he hadn't, and he was in no mood to go down that path tonight. No, absolutely not tonight. He wished to stay in this moment, to take in that subtle yet pleasing gasp he had stolen from those soft lips and that hesitant, barely-there manner with which she touched him, as though she were trying not to get burned by him. Burned by his cruelty and his dismissive ways all these years. Along with all the things that made him who he was to her - the husband who had abandoned her for the years of their marriage.
In that very moment, as he kissed her, nothing else mattered. And all that he allowed his thoughts to roam over were how she was responding to him right then. Soft, she was soft. Softer than he remembered. But then again, when had been the last time? When they were much younger, much more ill at ease, and he had been much less willing to accept this forced-upon-him union. And yet, here they were. And here he was now, gingerly cupping her cheek as his lips were warm against hers. The movement was soft, slow, and gentle, as if he had all the time in the world. And they could pretend that they did, if only for this moment. Perhaps even for tonight. If he could be selfish enough to wish it so.
He would have wanted it go on for a while longer. Until she pulled away and brought them both back to their uncomfortable reality with her words of hurt that were more than obvious to him. It was expected from her. He had hurt her for far too long. It would have been foolish of him to think she would forget all that with simply one kiss. But strangely enough he found himself wishing that he could try to change things, and he was actually going to. Change how things were between them. He found himself suddenly filled with a newfound determination.
‘ But I wasn't mistaken at all, wife. I know who you are, and I still kissed you. And you kissed me back. Would you let us continue, or are you going to walk away from me? ‘

What was the point of daemon mareying rhea and then killing her narrative wise. It didnt really impact the vale alliance all that much. I thought they would have been more pissed that rhaenyra married the man who murdered one of the oldest houses on Westeros and helped jeyne arryn. Instead they protected his daughter.
i have no idea. why does he need to have so many wives. why does he have so many children. why does he always keep getting away with it. 😭
marriage to rhea was not a bad idea for daemon & house targaryen. she's an heiress in her own right and he is a second son with nothing to inherit. apart from that, rhea's relative, yorbert royce, was a regent for lady jeyne. this could have been a way for house targaryen to insinuate themselves in the arryn succession. aemma was a relation of lady jeyne's, we don't know how exactly, but keeping the vale close is not a bad thing. the arryns were one of the few westerosi noble houses that received a targaryen princess in marriage, i.e. daella. it makes sense to nurture that connection to the vale.
the truth is, lady jeyne has reason to both spurn rhaenyra and to support her. supporting rhaenyra in the context of her husband murdering rhea makes no sense. but lady jeyne also had issues with her own inheritance and was contested by her male cousins. perhaps she was hoping rhaenyra being confirmed as queen could act as a legal enforcement of her own claim.
sucks that rhaenyra proved repeatedly that she doesn't care about the inheritance of other women apart from her. george was smoking something whack when he had so many houses support her 😭

Okay, I like the “change” from the book when it came to Laenor’s death. They took the rumor that Daemon convinced Qarl to kill Laenor…but then added a second twist where Daemon’s plan was to have Qarl fake Laenor’s death so they can run away in peace.
It’s actually not a bad change, considering that the book is full of rumors and untrustworthy accounts of certain events. Also, you can argue that the reason why the fake death wasn’t in the books is because none of the in-story authors witnessed Laenor and Qarl rowing away. It’s an event that was lost in history.
On a more shallow note, I like the change because it helps add more greyness to Daemon. The show had Daemon kill Lady Rhea, which was not in the books either and pushed Daemon into the more morally-evil territory. So, it’s nice that another change from the books showed that he’s not just plotting murders all the time.

Daemon kills Lady Rhea Royce 1X05.
So... I might get some haters, but I don't think Daemon planned to kill his wife here.
 In particular because :
 - Daemon had no way of foreseeing that Rhea would hunt alone.
 - He's unarmed.
 - He tries to catch up with the horse when he runs away. (check, it does not move away, but tries to stabilize it)
The only things that can attest to an assassination attempt are the fact that he comes hooded, as if he wanted to avoid being seen or recognized, and that he doesn't speak. And I don't think that's enough to fully incriminate him with a premeditated assassination attempt.
Especially with trying to catch the horse. If he wanted Rhea dead, this would be the perfect opportunity. Step aside, and let nature take its course. But no. He stretches out his hands as if to catch / stabilize the animal.
For someone planning to murder his wife, recognize that there are more effective ways. Like, I don't know, directly sent someone in his place to avoid being blamed in some way? Daemon has certainly always been shown as impulsive, but showing up like that to kill his wife without weapons and especially without knowing if she will be alone to corner him, it's a bit insulting all the same. I like to think he'd be smarter than that if he was planning an assassination.
Also, she is the one who deduces that he wants to kill her and she runs away, visibly causing her horse to panic, which causes him to fall and become paralyzed.
Yes, Daemon is getting closer to the horse. But the horse isn't backing away because Daemon is scaring it, but because Rhea is holding the reins and backing it off.
The horse only panics when she tries to bring her bow. Not to mention that Daemon's gestures don't seem particularly threatening, and if his goal was still to scare the animal, I don't see the point of trying to catch up with him a few seconds later.
One can greatly speculate on Daemon's silence in this scene. After all, he doesn't love his wife and hasn't seen her for a long time. Logical to have trouble talking to her with the feelings she inspires in him, especially if he comes with the aim of asking her for something, such as a divorce. Also, he may just want to annoy her at the time, because he hates her, or even scares her to some extent. Which if that was his goal, is fully successful... Or maybe he just let her empty her bag and finish her avalanche of insult. See even, all these elements at once? Daemon is monstrous chaos, who knows what's going through his mind.
And then, it's not the first time that Daemon is silent, (episode 3 remember ?) his character finally speaks very little when you think about it. So imagine with someone he hates?
As for the fact that he is hooded, I would say that is what makes him the most suspicious, supporting for me the fact that Daemon did not have pure intentions in mind when he came to find her there.
But one person on tumblr pointed out that from the conversation between Daemon and Rhea, it seems possible to infer that he was planning to have the marriage called off (and other than a divorce, I don't see what he could ask him in this scene) in view of the non consumption of the latter. And that's the reason (besides the fact that they hate each other) that Daemon never consummated their union. Because he was still planning on getting divorced at some point. Which is consistent with the fact that in the book, it is stated that Daemon filed for divorce several times, and I refuse to believe that he ever did in the universe of the series, especially in view of how he openly despises his wife. The person went on to argue that Daemon has been avoiding Rhea like the plague since their union (which is true) to possibly prove that they never consumed her, and this precisely in the optics of obtaining a divorce one day. He would have to have formal proof that they never did the deed together, and in case Rhea lost her virginity to someone else, she (or others) couldn't tell that it was. It was Daemon's doing, the latter having never been seen in the Vale with her. Which, then, could be why he would meet her in such secrecy. He wouldn't want to be seen with her, even if he wasn't determined to kill her.
It's a very good explanation. Much more plausible in my opinion than the "Daemon scared the horse because he managed to smell the dragon" shot. Are you telling me the guy plans to kill his wife and ride a dragon back to the Vale ? Or that he hasn't washed for several days to smell the dragon ? Or that he kept something having been in contact with Caraxes to smear on his hands ? Seriously ?
The way Rhea's death unfolded, in the person's words, "didn't exactly seem well-planned - more of an unfortunate coincidence. I don't believe Daemon trained to knock people off horses at bare hands. There are better ways to frame someone's murder, like making it look like a bandit attack or mountain clans in Vale." And I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with those statements about planning someone's death, especially with a view to making it look like an accident.
I personally think that Daemon was not resolved to kill his wife, (which explains the flagrant lack of preparation) but that in the eventuality or the confrontation with her would turn sour, (= maybe resolve to kill her somehow from not being able to get a divorce) being present incognito would make him feel secure. As for not having weapons, I would say that it would ultimately not be a problem for Daemon, given the warrior that he is. (in case I hear he hadn't planned to kill her in the first place, he can always tell himself that he will get by with his warrior experience if he changes his mind)
Also, it's interesting to note that even though we see Daemon take the stone to finish off Rhea, we don't see him deliver the killing blow. As if to leave some doubt as to whether he really completed it or not. Especially since in the context of the scene, it is clear that Daemon would have simply left her to die there (which she inevitably would have done), and that it was following Rhea's provocation that he picked up the stone. (although I'm sure he finished it)
So. Did Daemon kill his wife ? Yes. (more or less accidentally if you don't think he struck the fatal blow with the stone) Was it premeditated ? No. Considered ? Most likely.
Afterwards it's entirely possible that he just planned to kill her (him trying to catch up with the horse being an obscure reflex in this case), but did it all out of the blue like the chaotic guy he is.
Daemon is a chaotic and complex character. It is difficult to pinpoint it, and we must keep in mind that this scene was deliberately made in an ambiguous way.
Even if I don't understand the point of making him guilty of the only crime that we are sure he didn't commit in the book... I mean, he wasn't even on the same continent as her when she died. In the series, it will probably (I'm pretty sure) of the death of Harwin, but as for Laenor I think he will be involved.
