oh my god?? thank you for posting about this because the way idols deal with/talk about dieting has been so frustrating to me. i only got into kpop last year but it has been bothering me ever since how this literally became a normal thing for them, and everyone is just so okay with it?? when it's in fact not okay? my sister tried to tell me it's a normal thing because every idol does it (the same with airport/stalker pics, it's "normal" because they are famous and famous ppl have gotten stalker pics for decades now) but it's just not?? kpop just really brainwashed people into thinking that it has to be a normal thing and we as fans just accepted it and rolled with it?? and it's so fucked up how they are debuting literal 13-14 year old kids who will grown up in this industry and spend the majority of their teenage years and early 20s in it. also let me add the constant need for male idols to be half-naked all the time. it really ties into the dieting part when they have to be fit all the time in case a concept is sexy and they need to flash their abs or something. yes i am talking about 19 year old JM at MAMA. and i know it happens with a lot of idols and it's really sickening, but his "case" really stayed with me since he struggled with eating problems for a long time. he still does. i fully blame the kpop industry and whoever was the first person who came up with the concept of idols must be mere skin and bone to debut.

ah, yes, the old "if everyone does it then it's perfectly fine!" argument 💀 i know, and it's such an insidious thing too because you do get desensitized, little by little, just because there's so much of it everywhere. don't even get me started on this phenomenon of debuting literal children (i really. can't just comfortably sit down to talk about this, it makes me too mad for words), but yeah to everything else! the thing about the dieting issue is that it is constantly, relentlessly, reinforced by fans as well - like what meg shared with me, kihyun's comment that “you tell me to eat but you won’t deny you like the results of me dieting” and what i initially said in my tags today. your jimin example is perfectly spot on, but another example from the opposite end of the spectrum that really hit me is what happened to kyla massie while she was a member of pristin. the fan mass bullying over her weight was absolutely insane to me when i first heard about it. but these almost-aggressive fan expectations and pressure to look a certain way speak a lot about just how deeply ingrained these toxic standards are in the industry that some people think bullying a literal teenage girl out of a girl group for not being as skinny as the rest of the group (i can't, for the life of me, call her overweight. she was perfectly normal-weight.) is okay. i'm rambling but i just wanted to emphasize how much weight (ha) an idol-fanbase relationship carries and how each of their actions and attitudes influence one another in very insidious and sometimes very harmful ways.
