Street got her start in the radio business in San Francisco in the late 1960s, working at KMPX, KTIM and KSAN as one of the country’s first female FM DJs. She found her way into the Los Angeles market in 1978 after landing a job at KROQ, one of L.A.’s premier rock stations. She briefly left KROQ in 1980 and spent time at local rock stations KLOS and KWST, before returning to anchor KROQ’s evening programming from 1981 to 1989.

Dusty Street, a DJ familiar to Southern Californians as one of the pioneering female voices in rock radio.

She began her career in San Francisco, DJ-ing at freeform KMPX beginning in 1967 before moving on to KSAN in 1969, where she held court for a decade. She moved on to KROQ in 1979, as the new wave movement was cresting and making that station feel like a clubhouse for a new generation. Her other stints in L.A. radio included stops at KWST and KLOS. Street eventually moved to Las Vegas and then Cleveland, from which she did her SiriusXM show on the Deep Tracks channel.

Dusty Street, (Died October 21, 2023) one of the first female disc jockeys on the West Coast, died Saturday in Eugene, Ore. She was 77.

She was most recently the host of SiriusXM Deep Tracks, but is best known for her time working at KROQ-FM, known as K-Rock. The station became a force in punk and new wave music in the late ’70s into the 1980s.

“We have lost one of our own. Dusty Street has passed away after 77 joyous trips around the sun. And yes, Dusty Street was her real name,” SiriusXM Deep Tracks, Street’s most recent employer, shared Sunday in a Facebook post.

After some time at smaller stations, Street joined KROQ in 1978. She briefly left KROQ in 1980 and spent time at local rock stations KLOS and KWST, before returning to anchor KROQ’s evening programming from 1981 to 1989.

Street departed KROQ in 1989, claiming that she was a “renegade” to the increasingly tightened programming demanded. She also was a vehement opponent of the Parents Music Resoure Center, which was then attempting to impose a ratings system on music recordings.

She landed on her feet in Cleveland at the Rock Hall of Fame, joining upstart SIriusXM on its fifth floor studios.

Im gesamten europäschen Raum ächzen die Verbraucher. Am schlimmsten trifft es Haushalte in Deutschland. Was tun die Regierungen dagegen? Und könnten sie mehr tun? Ein durchschnittlicher europäischer Haushalt muss sich in diesem Jahr auf eine Rechnung von rund 1850 Euro für Strom und Gas einstellen. Ein ziemlicher Batzen im Vergleich zu den 1200 Euro aus dem Jahr 2020, wie die Bank of America Research (BofA) errechnet hat. Beim Strompreis ist Deutschland dabei einsame Spitze: In keinem Land müssen Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher mehr bezahlen. Laut dem Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft zahlten deutsche Haushalte im Januar 2022 im Schnitt 36,19 Cent pro Kilowattstunde - so viel wie noch nie. Für andere Europäer sind es derzeit weniger als 25 Cent. Im Fahrwasser des Preisanstiegs von Erdgas - laut BofA ein Plus von 330 Prozent am niederländischen Leitmarkt 2021 und von mehr als 100 Prozent auf Deutschlands und Frankreichs Umschlagplätzen -, bedingt durch eine hohe globale Nachfrage und ein sparsames Angebot auf dem Weltmarkt, ist auch Strom sehr viel teurer geworden. Das Ende der Heizperiode mag Gaskunden ein wenig Entspannung bringen. Aber die Energiepreishausse ist damit nicht vorbei, da sich der Anstieg der Großhandelspreise zeitversetzt bei den Endkunden niederschlägt. Gerade die Stromrechnung verheißt also weiterhin nichts Gutes. Bei Strom wäre es für die Politik vergleichsweise einfach, übermäßige Mehrkosten abzufedern: Hierzulande besteht der Preis nur zu rund 20 Prozent aus den Erzeugungskosten, der Rest sind Steuern und Abgaben wie Netzentgelte sowie die Umlage zur Förderung erneuerbarer Energien (EEG). Letztere hat die Bundesregierung zu Jahresbeginn fast um die Hälfte gesenkt (von 6,5 Cent/KWSt auf 3,7 Cent). Eine Komplettabschaffung noch in diesem Jahr wird diskutiert. Ähnlich verhält es sich in anderen EU-Ländern, die Verbraucher seit vergangenem Jahr mit Dutzenden Milliarden Euro entlastet haben. Zwar warnen Energie- und Umweltexperten wie Andreas Löschel von der Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, die Reaktionen anderer EU-Länder einfach auf den heimischen Markt zu übertragen. Denn grundsätzlich laufen indirekte Subventionen der fossilen Energieträger den europäischen Klimaschutzzielen zuwider. Doch kurzfristig geht es darum, den Unmut der Bürgerinnen und Bürger über die hohen Belastungen zu dämpfen. Und die meisten Nachbarn entlasten ihre Verbraucher dabei mehr als es die Ampel-Koalition tut: allen voran Spanien, das schon im Herbst die Stromsteuer auf das in der EU erlaubte Minimum von 0,5 Prozent senkte – zusätzlich zur Mehrwertsteuer wohlgemerkt. Elf Länder drehten an der Steuerschraube Nach einer Zusammenstellung der Denkfabrik Bruegel in Brüssel haben Spanien, Belgien, Frankreich und Rumänien am umfassendsten reagiert, damit Bürgerinnen und Bürger nicht wie die französischen Gelbwesten 2018 auf die Barrikaden gehen. Jeweils mehr als vier Gegenmaßnahmen haben die Länder ergriffen, teilweise sind weitere Schritte geplant. Ganze elf der 24 untersuchten Regierungen drehten an der Preisschraube, indem sie Energie- oder Mehrwertsteuern strichen oder drastisch senkten. Südliche Länder schreckten auch weniger davor zurück, die Mehreinnahmen von Energieunternehmen stärker zu besteuern - sechs Regierungen erheben solche "windfall profit taxes", darunter auch Großbritannien. 13 Länder griffen zum ultimativen Preisdiktat und deckelten Großhandelspreise oder Endkundentarife, darunter Frankreich. Dort verordnete die Regierung bereits im September, dass die Gas- und Stromtarife nicht weiter steigen dürfen - im Jahr 2022 wird ein Plus von vier Prozent toleriert. Um dies zu ermöglichen, senkte Paris die Stromsteuern. So wie Frankreich haben es Zypern, Griechenland und Portugal dabei noch mit staatlichen Energieunternehmen zu tun. Der französische Energieversorger EDF befürchtet eine Lücke von etwa 8 Mrd. Euro im Ergebnis. Die Last für die Staatskasse erreicht bislang geschätzt weitere 8 Mrd. Euro - einschließlich 3,8 Mrd. Euro für Energiegutscheine an 38 Millionen Franzosen. Frankreich wählt bald einen neuen Präsidenten. Zügig handelte auch Belgien, wo einige Energiesteuern und eine grüne Umlage durch eine fixe Abgabe ersetzt und ein Sozialtarif für Niedrigverdiener bis Juni auf 500.000 Haushalte ausgedehnt wurden. Zuletzt nahm die Regierung die Mehrwertsteuer von 21 auf 6 Prozent zurück - zunächst bis Juli. Zusammen mit Direktzahlungen an einkommensschwache Haushalte - ein Instrument, auf das 14 Länder in Europa zurückgreifen – wie eine Heizprämie von 100 Euro pro Haushalt, wird die belgische Staatskasse mit mehr als 1 Mrd. Euro belastet. Landesweit profitieren rund eine Million Haushalte von vergünstigten Strom-, Gas- und Erdölpreisen. Allerdings spült der Energiepreisanstieg dem Staat auch zusätzliche Steuereinnahmen in die Kasse. Italien am teuersten In Italien, wo der Anstieg ohne Gegenmaßnahmen laut BofA fast 80 Prozent im Vergleich zu 2020 erreichen würde, startete Ministerpräsident Mario Draghi mit Sofortmaßnahmen im Wert von 3 Mrd. Euro: Der Staat übernahm Gebühren und Abgaben am Strommarkt und senkte Steuern auf Gas. Weitere Boni folgten für Haushalte, die von Energiearmut bedroht waren. Im Januar verlängerte und ergänzte Rom Kostendämpfer noch einmal. Den Staatshaushalt wird das bis März mit geschätzt 8,5 Mrd. Euro belasten, schreibt Bruegel. Ende Januar kamen Steuernachlässe (20 Prozent) für energieintensive Betriebe mit mehr als 30-prozentigen Mehrkosen zu 2019 hinzu. Dafür werden Erzeuger von Solar-, Wind-, Wasser- und Geothermie-Energie von Februar bis Ende 2022 stärker zur Kasse gebeten. Das alles lässt die Analysten der von Reuters verbreiteten BofA-Studie vom Januar aber skeptisch zurück. „Die bislang in Europa verkündeten Maßnahmen werden im Schnitt nur etwa ein Viertel der Preisanstiege auffangen“, wird der Energiemarktexperte Harry Wyburd zitiert. Auf der Grundlage der gegenwärtigen Großhandelspreise werde der Preisanstieg 2022 rund 54 Prozent zu 2020 erreichen. „Was sie heute bezahlen, wenn Sie Wasser kochen, spiegelt den Preis von vor etwa sechs bis neun Monaten wieder. Das ist wie Zeitlupe.” Inflationsungleichheit nimmt zu In Italien, Griechenland und anderen südlichen Ländern der EU überwiegt die Sorge, die Energiepreiskrise könnte die wirtschaftliche Erholung von der Covid-19-Pandemie ersticken. Ärmere Länder haben stärker an der Preiskrise zu knabbern. So müssen in Tschechien die ärmsten Familien etwa 20 Prozent ihrer Einkommen für Autofahren, Strom und Heizen aufwenden, wie der Europäische Rechnungshof anführt. Prag strich Ende 2021 die Mehrwertsteuer auf Strom und Gas und hilft kleinen Unternehmen mit Bürgschaften, deren Energierechnung sich verdoppelt hat. Obendrein ist die Preisspirale bei Energie ein wichtiger Inflationstreiber, wie auch die Experten des Bruegel-Thinktanks anmerken: aber in einigen Ländern stärker als in anderen. Der EU-weite Inflationsanstieg 2021 berge einen Sprung der Strom-, Gas- und Treibstoffpreise von 23 Prozent. "Aber Inflation und Energiekosten von Endkunden haben sich quer durch die Eurozone sehr unterschiedlich entwickelt." So sei der Anstieg der Energiekosten in Belgien mit 60 Prozent ausgeprägter als mit 33 Prozent in Italien und mit "nur" 19 Prozent in Frankreich. Geringverdiener unter den Haushalten hätten dabei jedoch die größten Probleme, die Belastung anderweitig auszugleichen. Zugleich fräßen die Energiekosten einen größeren Teil ihrer Ausgaben auf, so Bruegel. Damit steige die Inflationsungleichheit, in der arme Haushalte die Hauptlast steigender Preise tragen. Reformen unumgehbar Eine wenig überraschende Erkenntnis, die die Politik jedoch berücksichtigen muss, wenn sie mittelfristig nach Strategien sucht, wie mit einer permanenten – und potenziell explosiven – Verteuerung fossiler Brennstoffe umzugehen ist. Kurzfristig werden auch von der Ampel-Koalition in Berlin weitere Schritte zur Entlastung von Endkunden erwartet, die über die bisherigen – Hilfen für Einkommensschwache und teils gestrichenen EEG-Umlagen - hinausgehen. Auch eine niedrigere Mehrwertsteuer oder der Wegfall der Stromsteuer wird diskutiert. Zunehmend lauter rufen zudem Industriekunden nach Entlastung. "Die Länder müssen anfangen, über effizientere Maßnahmen nachzudenken, um die künftigen, möglicherweise sehr viel nachhaltigeren Auswirkungen steigender Energiepreise auf die Inflationsungleichheit abzumildern", mahnen die Bruegel-Experten in ihrem Blog. Deutschlands Rechnungsprüfer schlagen vor, das System der staatlichen Umlagen und Entgelte "grundlegend zu reformieren". Und auch der Europäische Rechnungshof hält das gegenwärtige EU-System der Besteuerung von Energie für veraltet - und nicht an die Klimaziele angepasst.
