February 2nd, 2019: The first day of the annual Setsubun (節分) dedication dances took place today at Yasaka Shrine. I’ll list out the participants later, but for now I just really wanted to focus on this absolutely stunning image of Ichisato (市沙登) of Masunoya (桝之矢) in Pontocho. The colors of her outfit just seem to mesh together so well as the light blue and gold of the kimono contrast with the striking black of the obi and collar. Her hair is done in the Yuiwata (結綿) style that is worn by senior maiko during these celebrations. Ichisato may not be the most senior maiko in her district, but she’s actually the oldest in terms of age! She was 19 when she debuted in March 2017 and is now 21 years old. Pontocho allows for older girls to debut as maiko as long as they will be able to catch up to their peers by the time that they’re 21, which is when a maiko must either turn her collar and become a geiko or retire. Just by looking at this image we can see how much she’s grown in only two years and can hope that her erikae will be coming soon ^^ Image courtesy of KWC Photo.

What Does Condensation on Windows Do to Your Home?
26 May 2022
Foggy windows can be a common sight during colder months. A slim layer of water appears on the glass surface because it is cooler than the air outside and denser, resulting in condensation. Sometimes instead of appearing as “fog” on your windows, it’s drops of water that will run down them if not adequately treated or handled.
Removing these droplets is essential because they continue to drip and cause other unnecessary water piles, leading to messes like mould or mildew that are particularly harmful during winter. If the water freezes, window panes can crack. To your knowledge, condensation can happen on a window’s inside, outside, or in-between surfaces, leading to inevitable consequences.
In-between the windowpane
This situation occurs when the air-tight seal loses its strength and fails to contain insulating gas. As a result, leakage leads to the formation of water vapour between the windowpanes. It is a serious concern, and window replacement can be the only resolution in this case. It’s not great for your window’s health and home’s energy efficiency. It would be best to search for new options in windows Ottawa. Ensure that you invest in products that come with lifetime warranties as they can be highly energy efficient.
On the inside windowpane
Condensation on the internal surface of the windows may be an indication of excess humidity or perhaps poor ventilation issues in your house. It can compromise your home’s structure and even affect the wall’s insulation system.
Excess moisture can also create problems for your family’s health as the accumulated water vapour can promote the growth of mould and mildew, giving a tough time to people facing allergy or asthma issues. Hence, if you notice foggy windows, this may be a sign that there is an issue with the filtration system. If not checked, it would lead to mould and mildew building up, or possibly rust forming on different surfaces inside and around the house.
On the outside of the windowpane
If you notice condensation on the outer surface of windows, it indicates that your fixture is properly working as it should. When humid and warm air hits the colder glass surface of your windows, exterior condensation is likely to occur. Your windows are doing their job by keeping heat transfer and other factors at bay. Still, examine window frames and windowsills from time to time. Gaps in the windows can cause condensation, threatening the wall’s safety.
Condensation-resistant windows make a good choice for these reasons. So, if you are building a new home or facing water vapour issues in your old house, opt for windows that offer adequate protection against this. It’s critical for your mental peace and house’s health. With this, you can also do a few more things for prevention.
For example, switch on the fans, install dehumidifiers, and keep your rooms adequately heated. These will kill moisture, and the risk of condensation will also reduce considerably. However, when browsing through windows, don’t forget to choose the latest styles and suitable materials. After all, aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand.

if i wanted to learn more about kowloon walled city what websites/articles are the best to read through?
hey anon!! Sorry this took a few days!
Honestly, a lot of articles about kwc tend to just rehash the same information in varying levels of detail, so it’s kind of hit or miss! Here are some of my favorite learning materials though!
the special on hak nam that WSJ did a couple of years ago has to be one of my all time favorites! It’s interactive and has articles and video (in case you’re like me and find it hard to read big walls of text sometimes!). It also leads off to the documentary they published about it too!  Another good documentary (also my favorite!) is this one!
If you’re looking solely for text articles, The Life and Death of an Impossible City, by NIna Poleri, is great, contains an interview with Greg Girard (A photographer who took most photos that you see of the walled city), and it ties into information you can find in City of Darkness: Revisited, if you’re ever able to find a copy of that wonderful bastion of knowledge from your local (or non-local!) library.
The podcast 99% Invisible did a special on the walled city as well as published an article! I honestly love listening to the audio, Roman Mars has a really soothing voice! The article on the page is also really well written, but as I said earlier, articles on KWC all tend to say the same stuff!
Everything here can also be found on the resource masterlist I’ve compiled here! If there’s any specific part of the walled city’s history that you want to know more about as well please don’t hesitate to message me! I love talking about and educating about kwc, i haven’t been studying it since 2012 just to not talk about it with people!

Indonesia and Cambodia were among the 17 countries represented at “ONE: Call to Greatness.” It was the first ONE Championship event in 2019 to be held in Singapore.
Featuring six mixed martial arts matches, four kickboxing contests and one Muay Thai bout, “ONE: Call to Greatness” took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on February 22, 2019. In the first bout of the evening, Rudy “The Golden Boy” Agustian, 33, of Indonesia faced Khon Sichan, 21, of Cambodia.
Blue Corner
Hailing from Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia, Sichan started his Kun Khmer training when he was 6 years old and started competing when he was 13. He made his professional MMA debut in 2013 and joined ONE Championship in 2015.
Sichan is a KWC Flyweight Champion and is training out of PROKOUT Top Team and Team Phnom Penh MMA. “ONE: Call to Greatness” marked his fourth ONE Championship bout.
Red Corner
A former Indonesian Flyweight Champion and a Muay Thai specialist, Agustian is fighting out of Golden Camp and Pitbull Academy. He made his professional MMA debut in 2016 and joined ONE Championship in 2018.
When Agustian made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE: Pursuit of Greatness” at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar on October 26, 2018, he submitted Kaji “Alpha” Ebin, 26, of the Philippines. “ONE: Call to Greatness” marked the Indonesian fighter’s third bout in the promotion.
Fight Result
Setting the tone for an action-packed evening at “ONE: Call to Greatness,” Agustian and Sichan competed in an MMA bout in the flyweight division with Olivier Coste as the referee. The Indonesian contender made a quick work of his Cambodian opponent.
Agustian was driven to claim his third consecutive victory in ONE Championship. He caught Sichan with a rear-naked choke midway through the first frame.
With Sichan in no position to escape, Agustian applied pressure on the submission and forced the tap. Coste put a stop to the contest after 3 minutes and 14 seconds in the first round.
Winning at “ONE: Call to Greatness” improved Agustian’s professional MMA record to 7 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Sichan now has 3 wins and 4 losses.
“ONE” Call to Greatness” Main Event
In the main event of the evening, Stamp Fairtex, 21, of Thailand and Janet Todd, 33 of the U.S. competed for the inaugural ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Championship title. The Thai contender won via unanimous decision.
Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey and the United States were also represented at “ONE: Call to Greatness.” Check the complete results here.

What’s That Thing? Part 21
It’s been a while since we did this feature as I was waiting on some good questions to come in, and they have! I’ve since been hoarding them so that I have a nice stack, so like the knowledge dragon that I am I’ll be sharing my wealth with all of you again ^^! 29goingon90 asked: “Hello! I have a few questions about Umeno’s green shibori hiki. A) The color shows quite a bit of variation in places across the garment, and I wondered if this is a regular characteristic of shibori? I’ve seen others with the color “running” like on Umeno’s, indeed, I have a shibori furisode in orange and green that displays it, but I had always thought it was a result of dye migration, discoloration or fading defect. It must be wrong for an okiya to showcase the piece so frequently? B) Why do we see so much of this hiki? Maybe since I know this one, I spot it right away? Or does it just get used that much relative to other hiki that that makes it recognizable to me?”    Since it’s a two parter let’s tackle this in two parts! First, here’s the kimono in question:
Tumblr media
Image courtesy of KWC Photo. Shibori like this is a bit complicated to make due to multiple colors involved. Most shibori relies on one main color that produces a gradation to look like multiple colors, but is simple(ish) in its execution. In the majority of cases when there are multiple colors involved they tend to be “spot” colors that are applied in small patches; this is most commonly seen with pieces like shibori yukata. When it comes to this piece, it requires a bit of a different approach in that color here has been applied in layers. The overall piece was first dyed in a light yellow color, which is why we see yellow seemingly coming out of everywhere. From there, the overall green sections were done with a simple geometric design of three/four lines that look a bit like folding fans. If this were a single color shibori piece then the light green areas would be white underneath, but since this was done in two stages they’re actually that sunny yellow. From there, the bold yellow sections were done to finish off the piece. Because there’s so much dye and so much physical exertion on the silk when shibori is made it can often look “roughed up,” so this is why we see a bit of a blotchy effect on the overall piece. This tends to become more obvious over time as the piece ages and is worn as dye can indeed migrate. Since yellow and green are close colors whose dyes can even be derived from each other it won’t seem as pronounced as if you had almost opposite colors like the OP has. However, we do know that many of Umeno’s better kimono, like this piece in particular, are upwards of 30 years old, so they’ve seen a great deal of wear! 30 years may seem like a long time, but shibori kimono are among the most expensive type of kimono that an okiya can own, so they are treated with respect and preserved for use for as long as possible.  As for the second question, let’s look at some more visual aids to help us answer this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Images are courtesy of Katsufumi. So, as an experiment, I want you to look at both images above and tell me which kimono stands out the most to you. For the first image, your eyes are going to go to Fumiyuki in the middle as the contrast between purple and white is very strong. Then, you’ll look at Katsuki on the right as your eyes continue to look around for something to attract you, and the marumon on black is very striking. However, your eyes don’t want to focus on striking for very long, so they’ll immediately then go to Umetae on the left. You may not notice it until a few seconds later, but your eyes have actually focused on Umetae’s kimono longer than the others. Not only is it easier for your eyes to focus on for longer since the colors are similar, but the pattern in the shibori almost tricks your eyes into wanting to follow it around. In the second, a very similar thing happens. You’ll first be drawn to Fumiyuki’s green obi, but then almost immediately switch over to Umetae’s kimono. Shibori is very pleasing on the eyes, so whoever wears it is bound to stand out.  But, beyond all of that fun science-y stuff, we tend to see shibori kimono only from December through February as those are the only months when wearing shibori is considered appropriate. For nine months this kimono isn’t seen at all, so you aren’t really seeing it often overall, but are highly likely to see more images of it year round because it stands out so much. So, the overall answer is: The color is natural of the shibori process and nothing to be alarmed about. We see this kimono so often because it’s among the best that the okiya owns and it immediately draws attention to the wearer. Photographers really like images with shibori kimono, so they tend to be uploaded more than regular kimono ^^
