February 29th, 2024: As one chapter comes to a close, another shall soon start. Fujichiyo (ふじ千代) of Fuji (ふじ) in Kamishichiken is wearing her sakkō ensemble ahead of her quickly approaching erikae. She will be the first erikae for the newly opened Fuji okiya and the first for Kamishichiken in nearly two years. Per Kamishichiken's tradition, she is wearing a lovely powder blue iromontsuki with a kai awase (shell matching game) pattern and pine with a black interlocking tortoiseshell pattern obi. Since this is a formal outfit she does not wear an obijime and a pocchiri. Her kanzashi features a simple motif of silver and gold pine, which will be passed down to other maiko in her okiya in the future. Her erikae will take place on March 4th ^^ Image is courtesy of Atelier Hanae.

Was hijikata married? Or he had lover before?
Hijikata was never married, but he had many lovers.
Even in his earlier years in Edo, he frequented Yoshiwara and had a woman there (source). He wrote the poem:
The way of love If you know it, you are lost If you know it not, you will not get lost
(And then crossed it out, probably out of embarrassment) 😅
When he was 17, he got into a relationship with a maid at the kimono shop where he worked. She became pregnant, but he broke up with her after giving her money. (source)
He did have a fiancee named Koto who was the daughter of a shamisen shop owner, but he left for Kyoto before they could marry. He sent her a present and visited her whenever he was in Hino. She waited for him to return home, but he broke up with her when he went back for a visit in 1867 (He kept her waiting for 4 years...) (source)
Here's more info about it: (source)
Tamejiro, Toshizo’s eldest brother, enjoyed playing the shamisen, so he went to a shamisen shop owned by a distant relative of Sato Hikogoro. Okoto was a beauty with a good reputation in the neighborhood, and Toshizo liked her so much that he and his relatives discussed the possibility of marriage. However, Toshizo said, “I want to become a samurai and make a name for myself. Therefore, I cannot have a family here and now. I want you to let me be free for a little while longer”. Perhaps still harboring lingering feelings for the beautiful Okoto, Toshizo left for Kyoto with the meaningful poem, "The way of love, if you know it, you are lost; if you know it not, you will not be lost”. It’s said that Okoto could not give up on Toshizo and remained unmarried for the rest of her life. As an aside, it’s said that Hijikata went to see Okoto when he returned to his hometown in Keio 4 (1867). It’s not known what they talked about.
While in Kyoto, he was very popular with women and he had a colorful life with the oiran and geiko. I remember reading that he had 6 mistresses at the same time, but I can't find the source. Another source says that he didn't take any of them as mistresses.
He once sent home a pile love letters that he had received, along with a letter where he lists many women from the red light districts, probably attempting to attract more recruits. He wrote:
By the way, although we strive to serve our country faithfully and patriotically, I am attracted to women in ways I cannot describe with a brush. For example: in Kyoto, in Shimabara, there’s Hanagimi-tayu and Ichino-tenjin; in Gion, there are about three so-called geiko; in Kitano, there are the maiko Kimigiku and Koraku; in Osaka, in the Shinmachi district, there’s Wakazuru-tayu and two or three others; and in Kitano, in the Shinchi district, the number is so large that I’ll run out of ink if I listed them all. Imagine that! Women make me forget to do my best for the country. Toshizo has gone astray!
Here's more info about it: (source):
During his time in the Kyoto Shinsengumi, Toshizo was a good-looking man, so he also had many love affairs and proudly sent home love letters he received from many prostitutes to Kojima Shikanosuke. First, he wrote about Hanagimi-tayu (花君) and Ichino-tenjin (一元) in Shimabara, three geiko in Gion, Kimigiku (君菊) and Koraku (小楽) in Kitano, and Wakazuru-tayu (若鶴) and three others in Osaka Shinmachi. He is said to have had affairs with 12 women during his time in Kyoto. However, he did not take them as his mistresses like Kondo and the other executives, but rather parted with them cleanly. However, Sato Toshinobu, Toshizo’s nephew, visited Kyoto in 1887 and found out that Kimigiku, who lived in the Kamishichiken district outside the east gate of Kitano Tenjin, gave birth to Toshizo’s baby girl, but the baby died prematurely, and Kimigiku married someone else but eventually died.
Kondo once wrote in a letter that the Vice-commander was bragging about his numerous women. In addition, many of the higher ranking members had more than one home in Kyoto where they kept their lovers. Hijikata was said to have been the worst offender in this regard. (source)
After returning to Edo, he was still very popular with women:
The Shinsengumi spent in Goheishinden just after Kofu. Hijikata spent some of his time fishing in the river there, while still using the name “Naito Hayato”. No one in the area knew that he was actually Hijikata Toshizo of the Shinsengumi, so his reputation was not an influence on what happened next. Before long every girl in the village had gathered on the riverbank to watch the “handsome samurai”. It was agreed by all of them that he was “a nice man”. (source)
It seems that some time after that, he stopped having relationships with women:
By the time Hijikata went to Ezo, he was avoiding women altogether. As far as anyone knows, he had no children. (source)
If you want to read more about the Shinsengumi's love lives, you might be interested in the posts translated from Shinsengumi Koiuta. There are many interesting stories.

How many dance styles do Geisha dance/exist all across japan? I know Kyoto has five different styles (inoue, onoe, etc.) How many exist in total?
Greetings, there are hundreds of dance styles/schools "ryu" in all Japan. Those I know of (including Hanamachi that no longer exist, also some Hanamachi use multiple styles) are: ■ Bando 坂東 (Osaka Nanchi, Kamidayamada Togura) ■ Fujima 藤間 (Fukui, Hamamatsu, Isao, Kanazawa Kazuemachi, Kyoto Gion Higashi, Matsuyama, Osaka Nanchi, Otaru, Shizuoka, Takamatsu, Tamatsukuri, Tokyo Akasaka+Asakusa+Hachioji+Shinbashi+Yoshicho, Ureshino, Yamagata, Yugawara) ■ Fukuwara 福原 (Hamamatsu) ■ Hanayagi 花柳 (Atami, Gifu, Isawa, Kofu, Kumamoto, Kusatsu, Kyoto Kamishichiken, Nagasaki, Nara, Osaka Kitashinchi+Nanchi, Takasaki, Tokyo Asakusa+Kagurazaka+Oi+Omori+Shinbashi, Yoshicho, Yoshiwara, Ureshino) ■ Ichiyama 市山 (Niigata) ■ Inoue 井上 (Kyoto Gion+Gion Kobu) ■ Kamizaki 神崎 (Kanazawa Higashi) ■ Nishikawa 西川 (Aizuwakamatsu, Inuyama, Kanazawa Nishi, Kyoto Pontocho, Nagoya, Osaka Horie+Kitashinchi+Shinmachi, Tokyo Akasaka+Mukojima+Shinbashi) ■ Okamoto 岡本 (Yuzawa) ■ Onishi 小西 (Mito, Okayama) ■ Onoe 尾上 (Kinosaki, Kyoto Pontocho, Obama, Osaka Nanchi, Tokyo Shinbashi) ■ Rokugo 六鄕 (Kyoto Miyagawacho) ■ Saruwaka 猿若 (Tokyo Mukojima) ■ Shinozuka 篠塚 (Kyoto Gion, Pontocho) ■ Taguchiko 田口湖 (Tokyo Shintomicho) ■ Tanaka 田中 (Hakodate, Yugawara) ■ Umemoto 楳茂都 (Kyoto Miyagawacho) ■ Wakayagi 若柳 (Hanamaki, Kinosaki, Kyoto Miyagawacho+Pontocho, Morioka, Sapporo, Tosa) ■ Yamamura 山村 (Osaka Shinmachi) ■ Yoshito 芳膛 (Tokushima) Annotations: As for Osaka - it's possible that both Hanayagi and Nishikawa are still used in Kitashinchi, but I doubt that more than one school of dance is taught to Nanchi Geiko. As for Kyoto - Rokugo and Umemoto are only used in the Kyo Odori, they might have been "everyday" styles once. Shinozuka was used in Pontocho up until the 1920s, and in Gion until the 1870s. As far as I know, Nishikawa and Wakayagi are no longer taught in Pontocho - they only use Onoe ryu now. This blog, owned by 386princess is dedicated to Geisha everywhere. My current goal is to simply provide some cool hisotrical information, current information or answer your questions to the best of my abilities and research. For now, I will pin this, but as time moves forward. I'll see. My current plans for this year: - Introduce more people to Tokyo geisha and their practices, since that's where my heart is leading me, - Use factual information for everything I post, - Continue this blog as long as I can! Don't be afraid to start asking or just following what I post. (My profile picture is Umeha from Kamishichiken). Thank you! ^_^

As tumblr is getting more and more quiet...
How many of you are still there?
This blog meant a lot to me but with all the things that happened I feel more and more distanced from what I loved. I still enjoy seeing all the Maiko of Kamishichiken evolve but I just can't find the energy to follow all of them. After covid even less. So much changed.
And so did I. But I learned a lot that helps me to do the things I always loved. It helps me evolving and changing my life.
For now I try to put all my energy in my small business, in sewing and creating. Through this blog I also learned a lot about kimono. I will also use that knowledge. I have many plans and ideas and I would be grateful to show that to you some day, if you are interested.
If you want to support me and learn more about what I'm doing, please follow my instagram.
Thank you all for following this blog. It really means lots to me. But I don't think a lot is going to happen here anymore.

Gomen yasu! I completely forgot about my tumblr account! I haven’t posted updates in a year!! I’m so embarrassed. . .ヽ(〃v〃)ノ Quick recap? - I am online in a virtual world called Second Life.  - I am training to become a Second Life Geiko.  - I am a Second Year Maiko as of February. My geimei is Umechō.  - My okiya is a homage to the real life Umeno okiya, because it is Umecha Okaahan’s favorite okiya, and she wants to make the Second Life experience as real as possible. She’s working hard with partners to create our Kamishichiken world for you to enjoy.  - You could say we are a group of super fans of this culture and lifestyle: something we could not do in reality.  - We currently house 2 Geiko, 1 Maiko, 1 Minarai, and 2 Shikomi.  - I believe the okiya does have open enrollment, currently, for those who may be interested in joining. But do be patient with responses. Our first lives have been very active.  - I am planning to open a business on sim. o(〃’▽’〃)o /end recap.
If you are a user of Second Life, please feel free to join our group for notices of events! secondlife:///app/group/31ac39a5-b4f9-8129-cedc-db10ccf2a96d/about

The dancing fans of Geiko and Maiko of Kamishichiken are made with a similar design, with 2 colored bands made of 3 lines each, over a gold background. However, where the Maiko’s dancing fans have red lines, the Geiko’s dancing fans have green lines.

I wanted to do a post featuring some kitsuke over the past few months! A dear friend of mine has started designing and she has created some STUNNING custom pieces for me this year. My personal favorite is her creation featuring woodblock prints, called “Abuna” or risky. The pairing with the peach on the obi here lends a particularly intriguingly sensual air to things, which I personally LOVE! There are more pieces to come but I have not officially worn those yet. Please check out Imouto by Hanami of Little Yoshiwara in Second Life! Enjoy this sneak peak and see you soon at Ozashiki!
