Jahangir Khan Squash (C64/ZX Spectrum/Amstrad CPC/Amiga, Krisalis, 1990/1991)
Features the athlete with the longest winning streak in any top-level competitive sport. The C64 version has particularly good music. You can play it in your browser here.
Tips: Amiga controls include mouse, arrows, right Shift and Esc. C64 controls: space at cracktro screens, 1 or 2 to select game, then numpad 84620 for joystick.

John Barnes European Football, a Krisalis video game launched in 1992 for the Amiga and Atari ST platforms, draws its title from the celebrated English footballer John Barnes. Renowned for his wing play, Barnes's illustrious career included significant stints at Liverpool FC and contributions to the England national team.
The game immerses players in the European football landscape, offering a selection of teams and the opportunity to compete in the 1992 Eurocup. Developed amidst the rising popularity of sports games for home computers, it aimed to provide fans with an interactive football experience.
However, the Krisalis release falls significantly short of expectations, verging on unplayable due to its steep learning curve and unwieldy mechanics. Gameplay is notably constrained, with both short and long passes—essential tactics for constructing offensive plays—reduced to mere ball-clearing strategies. Scoring becomes a daunting task, often reliant on an optimistic mid-field lob and a goalkeeper's momentary lapse.
Player control exacerbates these issues, lacking responsive movement and making it difficult to strategically position players for defense or attack interception. The AI's reluctance to score offers scant consolation.
Moreover, the game's attempt at a tackling system is rudimentary at best. Dispossessing opponents is unrealistically simplified to either running into them or approaching from behind, which inexplicably results in gaining possession, thus facilitating counterattacks. This system, equally applicable to player and CPU, not only detracts from the realism but also amplifies the game's overall frustration.
The aggravation peaks when, after a challenging advance towards the goal, a mere touch from an opponent's player leads to a tackle, culminating in a disheartening loss of opportunity.
Given these glaring shortcomings, John Barnes European Football might just be the most disappointing soccer simulation released for the Amiga; honestly, I can't think of a worse title.

Basketball Kid - did it even exist?
Finishing off the week, we take a brief look at a sequel to Krisalis Software's Soccer Kid, imaginatively called Basketball Kid - mentioned in the pages of CU Amiga. However, did it ever progress past the concept stage and does anything still exist today?

This video goes live at 5pm GMT time and Riven, will be there when it goes live to answer your questions.
A look at Bullfrog's classic theme park business simulator first released in 1994, this is the 1995 PS1 version. Which included an extra 3D view mode, that allowed you to walk around your built part in 3D. Randomised Gaming's own editor Riven gives his thoughts on the game and explains how it works.
A hugely impressive title on release, Theme Park's games design has been borrowed by all the major titles in the genre. While titles like RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, may have now surpassed Theme Park in the design department, there's no doubting which game RollerCoaster Tycoon was based on.
Bullfrog had a great sense of humour too when developing the game which can be seen in the cartoon look and feel of all the rides and characters. The aim is to build up a successful Theme Park, then sell it off and repeat it all over again by starting another one up in a different part of the world. You do this by building up your park, investing in rides and staff and making your park as nice as possible. Keeping the park clean, the rides working and having security boot out any trouble makers, such as the biker thugs when they turn up.
