Brief About: Cocky, arrogant, annoying, Hugo is a bit of a thorn in the side of MI6, he likes to think he's the hero everytime and has a real hatred of Bond, seeing him as the favourite. In love with and a bit obsessed with Maria Bloomsco, Hugo generally does things for one of two reasons, will it benefit him or will it impress Maria. Brief About: Born with a freaky gene that heightened her pain threshold and made her freakishly strong Indy is a force to be reckoned with in the field. Though her parents dreamed she'd be an archaeologist and bring them riches galore, Indy instead became a Kingsman Agent. Arty is well known for getting himself into scrapes and only just getting himself out of them. His mouth often also moves faster than his feet can. Brief About: Grumpy but with a heart of gold, Huck has heard every pun about being a pirate because of his codename and his beard. - James Davenport - Agent Cador - 50-60 -

Brief About: Once upon a time James Davenport was 007 and known as James Bond. He got so used to James as a first name that he ended up legally changing his own. After retirement from the 00 program James tried to slowdown and enjoy a quiet life but he itched to be back in the field, albeit without the constraints of the government. A contact put him in touch with Kingsman and James became agent Cador - though not as spritely as he once was James still gets involved in information gathering but mostly mentors new agents and talks them through missions whilst Merlin is busy. Precursor apology for the rambling, I just have Thoughts and I’d love to hear your own about them cause I love the way you think and interpret and handle characters. Feel free to ignore this if it doesn’t actually spark any particular thought/discussion (even disagreement) 😅

I’ve had the thought— do you think Merlin ever gets tired of everyone’s well intentions? Someone pushing him to trust people, to reveal or not reveal magic, to focus on his magic to focus on Arthur, to sleep more or eat better, to confide in people, to learn to defend himself? Not just a weary tiredness of “they mean well, but no” but pushed to the point where he starts to feel like everyone acts like they know him, know everything better (and sometimes, yeah, they do, it’s just a matter of perspective/being nagged one too many times), that turns to serious irritation if not resentment of his friends acting like he’s not “perfectly capable and been dealing with this by himself for years damnit.” In reality we know all of this is from genuine concerns but I can’t imagine that being constantly questioned about his capacity to take care of himself wouldn’t cause some sort of conflict (cause in his head being able to deal with the threats and mess and prophecy and moral quandaries is the same thing, though no Merlin, it really isn’t)

And yes, I'm in total agreement with you.

First, WITH his magic:

He's got Gaius being condescending and spineless in one ear, demanding he use his magic to help Arthur and Uther and Camelot as a whole, telling him not to trust Kilgharrah or Morgana or Mordred or the Druids, whilst simultaneously telling him that Arthur can never know about his magic. The prophecy specifically says they're equals, two sides of the same coin; I understand not telling him at first, but I honestly think a lot of Merlin's fear comes from Gaius. That's got to be annoying, to constantly be underestimated and demanded of by a man who refused to face his King, and withered under his Genocidal insanity. Then he's got the likes of Lancelot and the Druids in his other ear, telling him that everything will work out ok, whilst... not really giving all that much support. I love Lance, I really do, but he really has no concept of the struggles Merlin faces, and is sort of too wrapped up in his infatuation with Gwen and his loyalty to Arthur to worry about anything else. He might be a good shoulder to cry on, but I also think he probably babies Merlin a LOT, which is understandably frustrating. He tries to force him to take time for himself to sleep or eat or just hang out/relax/rest, when Merlin KNOWS that he can't!! He's essentially got three jobs!! And no, Arthur won't lay off if I just ask him nicely (and no, I DON'T need you asking for me), and no, Gaius won't give me no chores for a week, and no, I can't just leave the Druids to deal with big beasty on their own and have a nap, and no, I can't just warn the guards about the assassin and leave them to it. That's not how any of this works. Yes, Lance means well, but his babying and nagging is, though sweet and loving at first, misinformed and condescending and insufferable after a few months/years of it.

And Kilgharrah is a whole other can of worms, what a dick. Demanding Merlin do this and that, not giving him straight answers, pretending to sympathise with Merlin and be his "kin" whilst also betraying him at basically every opportunity. Between him and Gaius, they make sure Merlin is almost completely and utterly alone.

Gaius' "good intentions" definitely come directly from fear, Lancelot's good intentions come from a lack of understanding, and Kilgharrah's "good intentions" come from a need to control Merlin at every turn. And whether Merlin sees any of this clearly or not, it definitely frustrates him. To the point that he stops going to any of them for help, and decides everything is just easier to deal with and manage if he does it solo.

Secondly, regardless of his magic:

Arthur is almost certainly the worst, when it comes to this sort of thing. He displays, every once in a while, an understanding that Merlin is braver and smarter than he gives him credit for, but he never actually treats him like it. It's like he genuinely thinks Merlin is an idiot, and interacts with him as such. He asks Merlin his opinion, and then ignores it most of the time, he never apologises to Merlin when he's hurt or trouble comes BECAUSE he ignored him, and just generally treats him like more of a nuisance. Merlin can deal with that, in fact it's actually kind of helpful for the whole persona, but when Arthur starts actually paying attention and tries to look after Merlin, he finds it both endearing, and incredibly annoying. Firstly, in the way that "you've never done this before, why are you acting like you care now?" and secondly in the way that "you're in the way, it's better when you're oblivious to me because I can get on with things." . Mostly, with Arthur, he just grits his teeth and gets through it, because he doesn't have much of a choice, but I can definitely imagine him snapping, in a small way, eventually "Arthur, I'm not a child, fuck off." or "I'm perfectly capable." or "I've been doing this for ten years, Arthur, I do not need your supervision." whilst normally things like that would be laughed off, he says it with such a tone that everyone in the vicinity is like... immediately taken aback.

With the others, it's mainly the protection. He's a servant, they're knights, it's kind of expected, but it does sort of annoy Merlin when they act like if he gets a papercut he'll die. He gets smacked around a bit by their captors once and they all FREAK out, demanding they take the punishment instead, and he just has to roll his eyes and sneakily free them with magic. He gets picked on by a Noble and they all get bristly and annoyed and it's just... frustrating, because they don't have the first clue how court works, and if they try to protect him, it'll get worse. They try to teach him how to throw a punch, or they start escorting him around town, or they put themselves in danger to rescue him, and he just can't... understand, that it's not JUST because they're underestimating him (which is annoying, but not the main reason), but also because... they love him?? They want him to be ok?? He has complicated thoughts about that because, first off, these people have no right to love him when they don't know him, and second off, everything was so much easier when people didn't notice him.

and AFTER the magic reveal?

Depending on the nature of the reveal, it arguably gets worse once they find out about his magic. They all automatically think he's weak and not that great at magic, and are always trying to get him to save his energy or train more or whatever. When someone against the repeal starts with him, they all jump in with weak, emotional arguments, which are all mostly factually incorrect, and just kind of condescending and infantilising. Then it's all "I don't need you to fight for me, not when I've been dealing with this my whole life." and "Actually, Sir Leon, you'd be wrong about that..." with a scowl and a stiff back. Even when he tells them he's powerful it's all "I'm sure you are, Merlin. Not like you've not used it for ten years." with rolled eyes and a smirk, until he goes fuck it, and shows off in a BIG way. Only then would they back off a bit, and even then... Merlin still has to glare at them or interrupt them or grit his teeth through it when they needlessly jump to his defence sometimes.

I guess it doesn’t help that he’s one of the babies of the group. I always see Mordred as the youngest, then Merlin, Elyan, and Arthur, then Gwen (I see Gwen as like... maybe two or three years older than Merlin?), then a fairly sizable gap (maybe 5-10 years?) followed by Percival and Lancelot, then Leon and Gwaine (who are, I’d say, up to five years older than Percy and Lance). But also this is all up to interpretation.

Okay listen, I’ve fallen headfirst back into Merlin (I never left, I’ve just gotten better at maintaining my sideblogs) so have all the fic’s I’m planning and ones that are half written

1) Merlin/Arthur; Reincarnation AU but ‘destiny free’ and angsty

2) Arthur/Happiness; Arthur is de-aged; and Leon becomes number one dad; which means Lancelot will not be outdone

3) Merlin/Happiness; Merlin is de-aged and everyone has to cover for him, under the impression no one else knows anything

4) Morgana/Happiness; Morgana has nightmares; and Merlin recognises the affliction, and confesses

5)Merlin/Arthur and Hunnith/Plot; Merlin finds out magic runs in both sides of his family and panics when his mother shows up in Camelot; aka Hunnith helps Morgana not fall down her dark path, scolds Kilgharrah for being a dick, and tries to meddle in her son's love life

5) Morgana/Mordred; Morgana attempts to de-age arthur to try to reclaim the throne, instead she curses herself, aka Season 1 Morgana during season 4/5

6) Merlin/Angst; Merlin can’t let go of those he’s lost, and neither are they will to leave him

7) Merlin/Arthur; The dragons return with a prophecy for the new land of Albion, telling of a more dangerous threat than the once and future kings death, now everyone races to decipher it

8) Merlin/The Knights; after a playful competition to teach the knights how to accept favors during meele’s Merlin starts receiving them even once it’s finished

9) Merlin/Arthur; Saturnalia festival, Merlin finds the bean and the knights declare him king for a day, it's only fair he and Arthur swap positions, which leads to a very awkward love confession

10) Aithusa /Family; Kilgharrah lies, Arthur meets Aithusa and Merlin learns there are things worse than keeping Aithusa a secret

11) Merlin/Arthur; Soulmate AU; everyone has a soulmark, an image that moves and grows/changes with them; Arthur’s never moves and never changes

12) Balinor/Hunnith, Uther/Ygraine Merlin/Arthur; Merlin tries an aging spell, and learns about his father through an unlikely source; aka he's Balinor's age and Uther mistakes him for Balinor come to haunt him

13) Merlin/Arthur/The Knights; a 5+1 concept; Arthur is both touch starved and unable to understand personal boundries; basically all the times the knights realized he was in love with them in a way, and the one time Arthur realized it himself

14) Merlin/Freya; Freya lives AU, Merlin sends her to Elador, which means Will and Hunnith show up to scold him about sending her alone

Imagine Dragons Worldbuilding

Inspired by @/salparadiselost's Dragon Batfam AU on ao3.

Feel free to take my ideas and use them with credit, whether it's simply for dragon lore or more specific dragon batfam!

So, the differences between @/salparadiselost ’s and my AUs: I was inspired by Sal but then I thought, “…but elemental/ATLA…” and my AU was born.

I kept Dick as an ice dragon and Jason as a fire/Phoenix but I changed the others.

In this AU, not everyone is a dragon (shifter). Most people are human, some are wyvern shifters (dragon cousins), and a few are dragon shifters. The most common are:

Wyverns (~1/1000)

Earth Dragons (~1/100,000)

Ice Dragons (~1/250,000)

Water Dragons (~1/500,000)

Air Dragons (vulnerable, ~1/1,000,000)

Fire Dragons (endangered, ~1/10,000,000)

The Batfam all have specific hoards pertaining to their interests.

Bruce: children, bat stuff, Grey Ghost merch

Babs is human, but hoards tech and info

Dick: gym/aerial/circus stuff, hero merch

Jason: books (specifically 1st editions) & weapons, specifically guns

Cass: hoodies, ballet memoirs, shoes (but specifically shoes…comfy ones, like converse and fuzzy slippers)

Steph: purple, funny tees

Tim: tech, info, coffee

Duke: puzzle books, rubix cubes, poetry books/his notebooks of poetry

Damian: animals, art, family members’ stuff

How I Picture the Dragons in my AU:

Ice: eastern dragon style, serpentine, has a headplate, spines along his back, fangs and claws, textured scales, smaller wingspan but can be extended with ice if needed (pls don’t question physics)

Colouring: typically light/icy/minty blues, whites (some greys [rarely darker than smoke grey], some crystalline)

Abilities: Flight, cryobreath, immunity to cold, ice/snow, etc

Fire: looks like your typical western dragon (think Kilgharrah from Merlin). Smooth scales, fangs & claws, some have horns; feathered wings–also largest wingspan

Colouring: reds, oranges, and yellows (a few whites & blues)

Abilities: Flight, pyrobreath, (some use heat to help them fly/catch an updraft), immune to heat/burns, (some are fireproof, even their feathers)

Water: eastern, serpentine, smooth scales for hydrodynamics, longest fangs and claws, a few spines, flowy wings (better as fins for swimming…fings??)

Colouring: darker/ocean blues, (some greens and blacks) often have sparkly accent scales

Abilities: excellent swimmers, able to fly but not long or far (they’re the literal chickens of the dragon world), hydrobreath, a type of sonar

Earth: think triceratops x wyvern/western dragon. Bumpy scales, leathery wings, short fangs and claws for digging, the thickest skin/armour.

Colouring: browns, red-browns, golds, greys/silvers

Abilities: flight, depending on the force/power can create tremors up to earthquakes, good sense of direction

Air: think archaeopteryx. Eastern, serpentine, 50/50 feathers & scales (the exposed scales are smooth for aerodynamics), claws & fangs, small wings

Colouring: VeRy light blues, whites, mauves, pastels (dark, black, etc [do you love the colour of the sky])

Abilities: excellent flyers, create large gusts of wind up to tiny tornadoes, vErY good senses to know what’s happening on the earth

Wyverns: smaller than most dragons, thus are better in smaller spaces, etc.

Colouring: typically duller colors, such as browns, greys, some greens and purples)

Subspecies:

Light and Shadow dragons are dragons that have the extra abilities of photo- and umbrakinesis, or manipulating light and shadows. (~1/275,000 either | ~1/1,000,000 both)

Light and Shadow dragons are actually a misnomer from the ancient ages, when they were thought to be a separate species. Light/Shadow dragons are subspecies of dragons, which means that any species of dragon (air, water, fire, earth, ice, or wyvern) could also have photo and/or umbrakinesis.

Phoenixes are a subspecies of Fire dragons (~1/100,000,000). They typically have unlimited lives/resurrections and will only stay dead when they truly desire to. Each time they are reborn (to the age they wish to be), another white feather grows in somewhere on their body.

Phoenixes can hypothetically also be a light/shadow dragon but there are no known records of one.

Other Random Funfacts:

In my AU, Bruce killed the Joker for Jason. Why did Jason not come home then? His dormant Phoenix gene was only triggered when he died so he accepted Talia’s offer to find other fire dragons and a Phoenix teacher, plus other human teachers to hone his skills while he was at it. (Don’t look too closely at my plotholes pockets, okay?)

Fire Dragons are the rarest because they were hunted almost to extinction in the Dark/Middle Ages. They were blamed for tragedies, as they were the most obvious with their abilities, as opposed to the blizzard-causing Ice Dragons’ fighting or the angry Earth Dragons’ quakes.

*I’ll probably never continue this fic, but if you have ideas, send them to me or write them yourself, as long as you tag me so I can see them too!*

Anyways, it’s never said, but Bruce is a Shadow-Earth Dragon and Cass is a Shadow-Air dragon. (While Jason was training he was taught some tricks to appear more shadow-like as well, making some theorists believe Red Hood may also be a Shadow-Fire Dragon.)

Steph is a brown wyvern and always wished she was purple, hence some of her obsession with the colour.

Duke is a LightShadow Wyvern, with both abilities. He is a reddish-brown in wyvern form.

As humans, ___ dragons are likely to:

Air: Take up a type of dancing or sport such as aerial silks or trapeze (less likely to be a pilot as they prefer to fly on their own terms & power)

Earth: Have heightened sensitivity to vibrations through the ground (better at distinguishing people’s strides/footsteps)

They’re also more likely to be business-savvy (possibly a side effect from sniffing out metals and rare earth elements as they dug tunnels in dragon form?)

Fire: Be immune to heat/burns (e.g. could pick up a skillet off the stove without a mark)

Have a higher body temperature (average is 3 degrees warmer than a human or other dragon species) (that strange person jogging in shorts and a tee in snowy January? Could be a Fire dragon shifter)*

Ice: Be immune to cold/snow/ice (e.g. Would Not Feeeze in a blizzard) (Winter is probably their favorite season) They’re the people who can hold a frozen lemonade r pint of ice cream without constantly switching hands because the other is freezing:/

Have a lower body temp than the average human/dragon shifter. (Usually between 3 and 5 degrees lower) As they are cooler, in human form they are likely to be more sluggish in the morning or after a long rest, much like a reptile.

Water: Take up swimming or another water-related sport/job

Be that person chugging 8 cups of water a day, minimum. It’s not more necessary than for other shifters/humans, they just like being around water. They also tend to live by bodies of water.

I love Merlin but if I hadn’t already seen it several times my anxiety would not let me watch it now. It’s only because I know what’s going to happen that I can keep watching. So many times the conflict is: he fucked up and you know he fucked up. Or, he’s a stubborn dick and won’t listen to anyone. Oh look at that manipulative dragon. I think this might be the 4th or 5th time we’ve rewatched Merlin. And I don’t know if it’s familiarity with the story or that age is just distilling my rage, but each time we watch it I get that much angrier

And like, everything is unquestionably uther’s fault. 100% everything all the time forever because he’s an overgrown toddler who has no other coping mechanism than pointing fingers and doubling down

But also I fucking hate kilgharrah so much

If he’d just fucking kept his mouth shut after the first episode, so many things would have gone so much better

Anyway, the moral of Merlin is that you shouldn’t listen to boomers because they’re self-serving, self-righteous dicks who never take responsibility for their own actions

Kilgharrah + Dumbledore rant

In my humble opinion, Dumbledore (or as my friend adequately nicknamed him, dumble-dick), and Kilgharrah, are very similar characters, in that they are both ancient lizards with oversized egos and a god complex. They are portrayed as good characters overall, their actions somehow always justifiable or not even being held responsible in any capacity in the first place. When in actual fact, they both manipulate the protagonist toward their own agendas, seemingly for the greater good, when in reality the benefits are pretty selfish. Merlin was young and naïve when he first came to Camelot, and Kilgharrah took advantage of his honest nature, forcing him to set him free in exchange for his help. Kilgharrah often states that he wishes for the golden age of Albion to be brought about, but his earlier actions (Before Merin was able to command him) completely contradict this. He promises Merlin a future that never happens, yet he was still able to be set free, and left relatively out of the way in peace for the rest of his life. Now Dumbledore, despite being the only wizard that Voldemort was afraid of, did very little to stop him, both during Harry’s time at Hogwarts and when he first rose to power. Instead, he left a child and his friends with the job of killing him, traumatizing them year after year, and if that’s not enough, send Harry back to an abusive family every summer (In a very similar situation to Tom Riddle being sent to an abusive orphanage). He raised him like “a pig for slaughter”. Draco Malfoy also suffered at his hands, Dumbledore knew for an entire year what the boy was tasked to do, knowing it would emotionally traumatize him even more than he already was, but did nothing to stop it, becoming a martyr instead, basically getting out before the real war begun. Both Kilgharrah and Dumbledick had tunnel vision when it came to their causes, and as long as Merlin and Harry respectively were able to fulfil their destinies, it didn’t matter what trauma they had to go through, what tough decisions they had to make, or what friends and family they had to lose along the way

Summary: After taking a shortcut back to Camelot, Gwaine, Lancelot and Merlin are captured by some familiar faces from Gwaine’s past. Caught between nightmares and memories that bloom in the place he grew up in, Gwaine struggles to convince himself that they'll all be able to get out alive.

Gwaine's past catches up with him and he's determined to put himself in harm's way in order to protect Merlin and Lancelot. They are not having any of it.

Opening:

In hindsight, it had not been a good idea to travel through the Valley of the Fallen Kings. But, seeing as Merlin had elected to not mention to either Gwaine or Lancelot that he'd broken several of his ribs until two days after leaving Gawant, both knights had wanted to get Merlin back to Camelot as quickly as possible. And Gwaine knew the Valley of the Fallen Kings like the back of his hand.

In hindsight, Gwaine should have also known that there would always be bandits lurking in the valley. But, being so focused on Merlin and so frustrated with himself for not noticing the pain Merlin had been in after falling off his horse when racing Elena, he hadn't spared a thought about potential attacks. Which, lying on the ground with an arrow protruding from his side, he realised he should have done.

So, I’m doing a rewatch of Merlin with my family and we have a tradition of commenting every little thing we see because where’s the fun if we don’t, and during the scene when Kilgharrah burnish Excalibur my mum went like:

“Merlin you cannot touch the hot sword, it will burn you!”

To which my sister eye-rolled and responded:

“Mum, I think Merlin is used to handle an hot sword”

My little 12 years old sister, smirking, just did a merthur dick joke in front of the whole family, and I’ve never been more proud.

i'm back with my bs. this is for my bestie @lady-ofmagic-andstars. basically, all of my dumb thoughts while i watched 'darkest hour pt 2', 04.02 of merlin. in case you weren't aware.. ✨spoilers✨

right off the bat i'm sad

ok when i first watched this i was really confused. i mean, you see others when they interact with the dorocha have that perpetual frost on their face right? all of them, every single one. so imagine my surprise when merlin has no frost on his face, and he's miserable yea- but he's not dead??

like tbh, watching this again, ik why but when i first watched this, i was SO confused.

but i mean, merlin is already raising himself up so he can sit more comfortably on the horse. ik that doesn't mean that he's in the clear yet, but he's doing a LOT better than the other people who ran into the dorocha. idk where i'm going with this

to quote the destiny and chicken podcast (who i love btw, if you want an awesome merlin podcast, check them out), they stay on arthur's face for SO long after merlin and lancelot leave.

i feel EVERYTHING that arthur is feeling in this moment. he's so pretty
